I just realized a neat little thing about Elias and when it comes to how he speaks to people.

Specifically in regards to how he speaks to Melanie vs. How he speaks to Jon.

Elias talks down to melanie in a way that makes her afraid of him further bc he knows she's terrified of him. He specifically even says, "I'm not omnipotent, do you know how exhausting that'd be" as a means of saying "I could be if I wanted to" to keep her guessing. He specifically leaves the idea that he COULD be to reinforce Melanie's paranoia.

His entire conversation with melanie is DRIPPING with smugness. She is terrified of him and he knows it. And he is enjoying her terror.

But his conversation with Jon? That is anger. That is annoyance, that is the frustration that comes with being called out when you've done something wrong but feel victimized because of it.

in his conversation with Jon post-stranger kidnapping, he talks down to Jon in a way that belittles him.

Just pay attention to specifically his word choice in that scene.

"Sarcasm isn't going to help." "I am sorry, Jon, that my powers have not yet reached omnipotence. And I am sorry that I have to spend so much time explaining things to you like you are a child"

"But you have a job to do and I cannot waste my time fighting your battles for you"

He specifically uses the word child against Jon as a way to take him down a peg simply because Jon isn't afraid of him. Not in the same way Melanie is at least. Jon hasnt experienced what she has so he has no reason to be afraid of Elias in the same way. And because Jon isnt afraid of him, Elias needs to find a new way to keep him in check.

He talks down to Jon like he's an annoying child rather than a fully fledged person. He flaunts his power over Melanie but forcefully puts down Jon because Jon isn't truly afraid of him

He has to force that power over Jon as a means of keeping him from knowing too much.

everyone posting about how theyd be immune to elias' trauma beam does not understand how it works

it is, by nature, something you don't already know. you can't know if you're immune to it or not because you cannot predict what it would or wouldn't be.

it taps into the unwanted / fearful knowledge aspect of the eye. if elias had just hit melanie with her dad's deterioration from dementia, sure that'd hurt, but it wouldn't be as effective as what he actually did, because she didn't actually know how he died. she knew how bad he was getting, and that was painful for her, but she's probably grieved plenty!

it's specifically the intersection of the painful nature of the knowledge, and the sudden, forceful recognition that she's been wrong this entire time. she probably hinged a lot on the idea that her dad died peacefully in his sleep. it's unfortunate she didn't get to say goodbye, but at least he didn't suffer.

except he really suffered, and she had no idea.

and martin, too - the nature of what elias told him is such that martin never could've known. his mum got rid of pictures of his dad, didn't talk about him. martin, too, probably hinged a lot on his dad! maybe his dad would come back to help, maybe if his dad came back his mum would get better, his dad probably cares about him, etc. and his mum is sick - he can make as many excuses for her behaviour as he like. he never has to face the truth.

anyway tldr you wouldn't be immune to the trauma beam because you dont even know what youd get trauma beamed with

I'm listening to the episode where Michael!Distortion becomes Helen!Distortion and I keep forgetting how absolutely tragic Michael's life is. He was literally this kind, gentle librarian type who worried about other people over himself and then Gertrude's betrayal was so deep and cutting that his hatred continued past his death through the distortion and pass Gertrude's life into the next archivist.

ok i know elias putting the information of her dad's death into melanie's head is supposed to be like. a scary and intimidating scene. but the way it's placed directly after the interaction where basira jokes about melanie making elias cry makes me think like. what if she was right and elias got weirdly insecure about it and decided the only course of action to take was to mentally torture melanie about it.
