October 9: 1x18 Arena

Today’s ep is Arena, which isn’t my favorite type of narrative generally--I don’t tend to like very sparse man-versus-nature type stories, and this is pretty close, except there’s a singular opponent--but this one is good. I mean...Gorn??

What the heck kinda conversation is this lol? Kirk and Bones all excited for some good food. Spock being suspicious.

This is a tough ep for a Kirk stan such as myself but Spock sure does come across well.

“Doctor, you are a sensualist,” Spock says as if he weren’t ALSO a sensualist lol. I’ve seen those big red curtains you have in your room bitch, don’t tell me you’re not a sensualist.

DeForest Kelley was so good... that smile. It’s so beautiful.

Kirk’s smile is pretty good too, especially that very specific “my two favorite people are interacting” soft smile. Same, Kirk, I love it too!

Well, so much for that good non reconstituted meal.

Kirk, Spock, Bones, and a redshirt beam down to a planet...what will happen?

“There are living creatures here... not human... cold-blooded.” Like Spock!

Sulu is really running the whole show here. Definite Captain material. He is an experienced combat officer. But it’s not the military right lmao.

Honestly kind of love that all of this is being done by big lizards. Like the mystery of the unknown alien is great for a first watch but it’s just as satisfying to know they’re big reptiles.

Also speaking of Sulu his eye shadow is great today.

“Protect my ship!” aka today in “Kirk loves his ship more than anything.”

And their goes their ride.

Spock: “I’ve got to get to the captain!” Sure do bb. He’s so much ganglier and more awkward than Kirk when he runs and rolls around.

The lizards are very smart, locking onto Spock’s tricorder and turning it into a bomb, apparently.

I legit through azimuth was a sci fi word they made up rip me. It’s a real thing but in my defense it has to do with math.

Spock came SO close to patting Kirk’s ass there.

So I guess their grenade launcher worked or whatever? Kind of missed something there but they’re back on the ship.

In some ways this is a hard ep for me because Kirk does not come off great at this point, and a part of me is like “well he does respect alien life though!” but realistically....he respects life unless his own people are threatened: when it’s ship, crew, or the Federation, he’s ready to throw down. And this was a pretty big attack, and apparently merciless. Spock is right that it isn’t necessarily true that the Gorns are invaders--that’s the best part of the ep for me, they both interpreted actions on the other’s part as invasions and neither was right, so it was a perfectly parallel misunderstanding, two Captains that are both opposites and identical--but it’s understandable for Kirk to think so. He believes so strongly in the Federation and its peaceful, good faith missions to make alien friends, that aliens showing up and just decimating everything, even killing civilians, would of course anger him and make him kind of lose his mind a little.

And Spock knows he’s wrong but he also trusts the Captain and believes in the chain of command.

Also I’m a Kirk apologist so!!

Strange signals...unrecorded... space legends--there’s a whole other story right in those lines tbh!! Spooky space hauntings!

Even this angry, he still sounds soft when he says “Thank you Spock.” Shatner is a more nuanced actor than people give him credit for.

“The destruction of the alien vessel will not help that colony, Jim.”

I love how they keep saying “alien.” I mean what else are they going to say--but it’s a great word.

It’s just so obvious that Kirk needs to Learn a Very Important Lesson today...

Oops, ran into a space wall!

Scotty’s real accent is so much more subtle than Simon Pegg’s insane Scottish accent lol.

The Metrons. “You are bad, violent aliens. We hate violence ourselves, so we shall now have you fight to the death.”

Spock’s like “Uhura, get out of the way. This is fascinating.”

Yes CAPTAIN GORN what an entrance!

Kirk’s not even surprised, he’s like, well...he’s a lizard, I guess!

“This is an intelligent, highly advanced individual, a captain of a starship, like myself.”

Kirk needs a bigger stick, I guess.

This fight sequence is so odd. It’s so obvious that the Gorn’s skin is not his skin, and there’s a weird kinda delicacy/awkwardness to his movements. This isn’t even a criticism of the costume or actors, I think it’s impressive--and frankly more fun than any alien consume in more recent sci fi. Just very odd. And actually in a way I LIKE it being odd because it seems more alien.

Scotty’s like, “Mr. Spock, I have obviously already tried everything you’ve thought of. It’s ME we’re talking about here.”

Spock and Uhura so obviously in love lol. The chemistry. Wow.

I guess Starfleet exists now. And the Federation.

“If I could help him, I would.” Spock’s so sad.

So I wasn’t really clear here if the Gorn was listening to Kirk with a translator or not but apparently he was. Kind of confused why Kirk didn’t bother listening in on the Gorn. Or more specifically why his hisses weren’t automatically translated at the beginning.

Sneaky, sneaky Gorn planning something.

“Diamonds....beautifully crystallized and pointed...Spock would love them.”

Kirk definitely spends his retirement writing a memoir. “Captain’s Log: Adventures on the Final Frontier.”

Gorn’s building something still....

I love when they pretend to push styrofoam as if it were really heavy.

Ah, no, he fell right into the Gorn’s trap! Being dramatic as always.

Lol, Kirk, the Metron said there were MATERIALS for weapons, not whole-ass weapons. Put it together. Literally.

Spock in the Captain’s chair again oh yeah.

Rolling his eyes at McCoy again lol.

Spock: “Feelings for the Captain? Me? What?” *sweats nervously*

Uhura is the only one with a realistic reaction to the Gorn.

Kirk following that very human instinct to figure out what something is by licking it.

Just to drive the point home, the Gorn specifically refers to the Federation as invaders, just like Kirk referred to the Gorns as invaders. “You established an outpost in our space... We destroyed invaders.”

And Bones having a crisis over here. Could we have been.... wrong? The whole time?

This situation needs diplomats, not soldiers. Perhaps... Sarek?

Spock’s so proud of Jim. And so excited by the narrative. “Everyone out of my way, gotta sit in my fancy chair to better enjoy this quality entertainment.”

And so Kirk learns his lesson.

I find the Metron kind of hilarious.

There’s a moment with Kirk on the bridge, in profile, where the physical similarities between Shatner and CPine are very strong.

“Where we are! I mean, were! I mean!” Sulu lol.

Quality final talk between Kirk and Spock. Bones is so obviously tired of all this lol--he just gives Kirk a quick cuddle, then off for a post-adventure drink. While Kirk and Spock do their post-adventure flirting.

I kinda want to see what’s happening on the Gorn ship tbh. Like Kirk learned his lesson but he never really established any kind of dialogue with the Gorns. We don’t know what the Gorn reaction to his mercy was.

Also I want to see Sarek interact with the Gorns.

Another very tightly plotted episode, focused on its main theme/lesson. Very satisfying.

Next up: Tomorrow Is Yesterday, a CLASSIC D.C. Fontana ep.

Open Heart Book 1 Finale Rant:

Let me start by saying that this will probably be one of my last analytical posts for a while. That makes me a little sad but I'm also very grateful to all of you who read my posts and motivated me to keep on writing. Truly, I had the time of my life writing the analyses. Now, this post was getting too long so I chopped it off I two parts- this one which is a general recap and my comment on the chapter and another one which I will be posting later today which will be purely about Ethan and MC's relationship. So y'all are looking at a LOT of content to read, I'm apologizing before hand! Okay no more sad talk except the evident fact that today was Open Heart Book 1 finale. Which means we'll have to live without Ethan Ramsey and the squad for quite some time. But focusing on the better things today:

The finale was everything! I felt a wave of emotions as I played it. I felt joy, triumph, anger, passion and hope all at the same time. Let's talk about what happened. (My MC is female, pronouns: she/her) So, Declan (or should I say Dick-lan) Nash had quite a few tricks up his sleeve huh, getting Dr. Cyrus and Dr. Wen to wager for him, lol, he really underestimated MC and the team of people backing her up.

I think it was a group effort when it comes to saving MC's career where MC of course deserves maximum of the credit because of all the patients who testified (Willow, Remy, Jake and Annie for me) on her behalf- if she hadn't gone above and beyond for her patients they wouldn't have given such honest and positive statements on her behalf. So props to MC, first! Then, props to the amazing friends MC has.. Sienna, Elijah, Rafael, Jackie, Bryce.. I mean those guys are basically her support system. Without them hyping her up and motivating her, her case would've fallen flat. Also, we can't forget Ines and Zaid, they're polar opposites and have weird ways of showing their love for MC but they've always been there for her. (even Zaid lmao ikr he's a total softie at heart) And most importantly, her friends always stood up for her. So here's to MC's friends!

Next up, to Ethan Ramsey (the light of MC's/my life) who really did not disappoint when he said he wasn't out of tricks. This man really went above and beyond to get hold of Mrs. Martinez's son and show him how happy his mother was before she passed away. Even if Ethan wasn't your LI and was just your mentor, he kind of singlehandedly saved MC from the potential lawsuit. It shows how much he cares about her, romantically or otherwise. He thinks MC is one of the best doctors he has ever seen and he did everything in his power to make sure, MC could be the doctor she has always wanted to be. That man cares for MC and even though he won't say it explicitly, his actions do much more than his words ever could. Therefore, Ethan Jonah Ramsey, the light of my life, here's to you. The man who cares for MC beyond all words. Even when MC herself has accepted that Ethan won't be able to help her out, Ethan kept pushing himself to find some loophole so that he could help her. And he did exactly that. That's why, I stan one (1) man.😌🥂

Next up, of course, is my moody baby yet smol bean Aurora Emery. She had her own way of standing up for MC. Like she said, "That wasn't for you, MC. That was for me." Maybe her intentions were to stand up for herself but doing so, in the process, she stood up for MC and finally knocked some sense into Harper Emery. I think her whole rant to Harper is one of the major reasons why Harper voted for MC to stay. So thanks, Aurora. Here's looking forward to actually being friends with her... or more. *wink*

Last but not the least, we have *drumrolls please* Dr. Naveen Banerji, who is now miraculously cured by MC's brilliant epiphany and Ethan's genius mind. I kinda expected Naveen to enter at the last moment but when he actually did, I swear I squealed like a five year old as if I hadn't been reading all the theories all week round about him walking in at the last moment. Anyways, I love that old man with my whole damn heart. He's literally like a father to MC like he's to Ethan. A grandmentor, if you will. And just like MC saved his life, he in turn saved MC's life=career. We've reached a full circle, my friends. So here's to you Naveen, nay the force be with you. (Y'all see what I did there? No? Okay, why do I try to be funny...)

So, basically Landry is gone. FOR GOOD. I'm glad PB didn't force a redemption arc on us. While I'm happy that Landry brought Naveen down, I don't think that one action forgives all the terrible things he has done. So bye bye dirty Laundry, here's hoping I never see you again. Also YAY! AURORA IS OUR NEW ROOMMATE. Not confirmed yet, but y'all know she'll say yes. Sienna has a crush on Danny- YAS OTP. But I do realise that we'll probably have to pay diamonds to set them up next book. Elijah and Phoebe going strong- YAS ANOTHER OTP. Jackie finally admitting defeat that MC would probably win the competition - HELL YAS, now that was a good redemption arc. Overall, I'm very happy how the things turned out for MC's friends.

Now, like I said at the starting of the post, I'll talk about Ethan and MC in detail in my next post but to sum it up, Ethan and MC had mind-blowing sex one last time before they had to face the reality of their situation. Now, I don't necessarily think they're back to square one because let's be real, you clearly care about the other person, you've had sex with them and you kiss them like there's no tomorrow, you can't really expect for nothing to happen even in a professional setting. Like, I do respect MC and Ethan's commitment to their job but then I think they can find some time for themselves.. you know.. for talking.. and dating.. and doing other things. Also, MC's friends finding out about her and Ethan- THAT SCENE WAS EVERYTHING I EVER HOPED FOR. Also, Naveen choosing MC for the position in the diagnostics team was already foreshadowed but I swear that man is the biggest Ethan×MC shipper. He's here for the angst, the mutual pining and he's sure as hell gonna enjoy how long these two struggle before finally giving in. Anyways, I won't lie but even though I'm a little sad that MC and Ethan aren't (officially) a couple, (we all know they've been married for over a year now) I think it will be nice to see the angst and this new phase of their relationship where MC directly works under Ethan and he gets to mentor her even more closely. It will be fun to see their mutual pining now that they've finally pulled the plug and had sex and kind of fallen in love with each other. The angst will be great and like I said earlier, along with Naveen it will be fun for us to see how long these two struggle before they finally give in and say,"Fuck work ethics. Adrian Raines knew better."

So, that's the end of this rant. The Ethan×MC post will be up soon. I want it to be special, like Ethan once said. And here's hoping they release book two soon although rationally speaking I don't see the book coming this summer. It'll probably release in fall. Guess we gotta wait, but some things are simply worth the wait. And I guess, we're all fighting the inevitable. *wink*

so something (refer to the song he said suits myday) happened with jae recently and ive seen fans trying to defend him by @ing him and saying that they love him which is fine - great even! but what i dont approve is how everyone’s basically forgotten about the whole matter because they had concerts so instead of @-ing him and asking him to explain himself, they tell him what a great concert it was which is also great bc their concerts are honestly amazing. basically my pet peeve is when ppl dismiss the problematic action of some people just bc they like them.

another thing is that there were some fans who started guilting others for wanting to drop day6 completely because of what jae did and in my opinion i think it is totally cool to want to drop a group if they did smth bad like??? its ur life???? u can choose who you want to like. what is not cool is pulling out all the good things the person has ever done in their entire life and try to remind others about the positive sides of the person. yes. they’re an encouraging person, etc. but that does not cancel out the bad things they’ve done until they explain/apologise. what is infuriating is just the manner some people took it?? they literally went ahead and tweeted shit like “would your parents drop you if you did smth wrong?” and “you’re seriously gonna drop someone whos been nothing been nice because of one incident?” yes. people will and you dont have any fucking right to stop them? so dont go pulling out receipts.

another thing. its also okay to want to stan the whole group even if someone has done smth problematic. like? to me youre cool if youre able to see and acknowledge the bad shit someone has done and still stand by their side while educating them at the same time its nice to have faith in your idols. however, i wont say much when your idols dont respond and/or respond in a way that shows absolutely no remorse. its cool if you want to support them too, despite that.

tldr; dont fucking excuse someone’s behaviour/action just because youre so far up their fucking ass. dont pull out shit from before either, be it good or bad. and lastly, its okay to want to drop/continue supporting them, its your life.

3.) A trait of an idol that you wish you could have.

Their motivation and hard work! I know it says a trait but I think the two really go hand in hand. I have motivation, it’s just it’s not always... available? I work hard at most things too, it’s just I’d love their undying passion towards their work.

4.) How has stanning your bias groups changed your life, if in any way?

Oh lordy. Well, for one thing I’m more expressive when I play music. Before, when I practiced piano, I’d be kinda emotionless while playing, but now I find it much easier to express myself! I don’t know why, maybe it’s because I’m now better at expressing my fangirling emotions, but hey it helps, whatever it is.

Stanning groups has also inspired me to work harder (see the last question my dudes) at school and music and to try a few new things (like fanfiction!). Without K-pop, I probably wouldn’t’ve made a hobby of writing and idk if I’d even be writing stories with @tanzderwhat. Oh god. That’d be a nightmare.

5.) Describe your country and what you love about it!

Well... I live in America. I guess I really like the diversity, especially where I live, because I can get to know more cultures and also pick up a few words of various languages (especially Spanish lmao). Uh... what else... there’s lots of good universities here too? I can’t think of much right now fml with that orange cheeto in the White House.

6.) Your favourite food that you would love to share with any tumblr blog/ idol

ANYTHING WITH POTATOES. I love potatoes to the moon and back (unless they’re rotten/raw ofc) and as long as it isn’t too spicy or has too much stuff I dislike I’ll eat like. Any potato dish in front of me.

7.) 5 qualities that you think are very important to have in this world.

Well, let’s see...

Motivation/Hard Work- You can’t get anywhere without these qualities. These are what make you stand out in the crowd. If you work hard, you can do almost anything you set your mind to (unless you like wanna turn yourself into a bug. though idk why you’d wanna do that)

Realism- I don’t know if this is like a trait but you’ve gotta be real. I’m not saying be pessimistic about everything but you can’t always live off of blind optimism. Sometimes you need to know when to take a break or when to just stop for a while. You aren’t a robot. You can’t do everything right then and there.

Curiosity- You’ve gotta be curious! You have to always want to learn more about things you encounter. It’s okay to not be as interested in some things as others but! In the things you like, especially, always do your best to learn more! Fill up that brain of yours with knowledge!

Responsibility- Right, so I joke about procrastination a lot but I really rarely do so. Make a plan and stick to that plan and you’ll find that you’re getting a lot of stuff done! Even if it’s just a relative plan like okay, spend a couple hours on world history homework and then practice piano for an hour, then eat dinner and read for some time, that’s better than nothing.

Creativity- We’ve gotten this far because some individuals thought of better, more creative solutions to problems at hand. Be creative in solving problems, in writing, in your homework, in any aspect of your life. You can be creative in solving math problems or doing chemistry homework- creativity isn’t limited to the arts. And creativity isn’t bad- your method/solution/etc might seem crazy at first, but you never know- it might work!

8.) Your dream job and why

Well, I really don’t know what job I want right now... just something in the STEM field. I’m thinking maybe a chemical engineer or software engineer, mainly because I think coding is really interesting (I’m taking a coding class this year!) and I absolutely LOVE chemistry. Those jobs are tentative though, I don’t have a fixed path yet.
