Dawn of Humans - 2010 s/t EP (intense, frightening, deeply weird, and somehow oddly uplifting hardcore) The Love Triangle - Clever Clever (cheery yet cynical 77-79-sounding punk - brilliant lyrics and melodies) Ceremony - Rohnert Park (art school surf-hardcore - their trend-hopping means people are less likely to admit how brilliant this record is) Good Throb - Fuck Off (took a while to fully appreciate; sounds like Gang of Four but funnier and also 300 times angrier) Hank Wood and the Hammerheads - Go Home (60s garage rock played at a hardcore pace with lyrics about fighting and wanting to die) Creem - Discography LP (the thinking man's stompy tough guy hardcore) RAD - Loud and Fast (the most fun record on this list; thrashcore gone silly-style; so funny, so fast, so loud, so rad) Criaturas - Espiritu de Libertad ('burning spirits' hardcore aka d-beat with insane guitar leads) Ajax - 2014 s/t EP (the ultimate d-beat meets stompy hybrid; with smart lyrics to boot) Triage - Power Beat EP (raw metallic d-beat with great songwriting and riffs. this and Ajax are my go-to EPs if I need a quick shot of rage and riffs) Sonic Avenues - Mistakes (poppy garage punk, but with real ambition and experimentation, and deep emotion) Radioactivity - Silent Kill (driving, laser-focused, mechanically precise garage punk, from veterans of the style) Kriegshog - s/t LP (nightmarishly noisy Japanese d-beat; a genuinely scary record; 'Burn' is possibly the best hardcore punk song ever written.) Sheer Mag - first three EPs (the power! the passion! yes, they sound very like Thin Lizzy and the like, but is that such a crime? I'm a stickler for this shit, but this band are punk) Uranium Club - first two releases (sneering garage rock-y post-punk, with absolutely twisted and often jawdroppingly brilliant lyrics) Suburbanite - Suburbanite EP (seriously feral, blindingly fast and disturbingly vitriolic and violent hardcore - right near the top of the pile) Rats Blood - Punks is Mutants (more d-beat with high quality songwriting - the title track is an anthem, and 'Heroin' and 'No More Fukushima' are chilling) Primetime - s/t EP (joyfully amateurish and snarky punk-pop about lady sex (!) among other things) This Routine is Hell - Howl (interdisciplinary hardcore with a passionate beatnik heart) G.L.O.S.S. - both releases (This band had lesser songs, but damn, they really knew how to do an opening track...) Dead Hero - demo (many oi! bands now appreciate the genius of Blitz's 'New Age', perhaps none more so than this Colombian crew)

Palm Sunday: A Summary

New priest gave our parish its first ever (in my memory) Palm Sunday processional. I'm 95% sure he didn't tell the choir beforehand. Their panic was mildly hilarious.

My Passion narrative thoughts for this year centered on Peter. Like Judas, he betrayed Jesus. Unlike Judas, he didn't despair. But he still ran off consumed by his own grief and left Jesus to die alone. Shades of Adam in the garden.

At Sunday family dinner, tiny niece decided for no discernible reason that I had to be the one to feed her corn to her. She tracked me down to recruit me. It was adorable.

Mary Berry's hot cross buns (with some variations for available ingredients) were much more satisfying than my previous attempt. It helped that she told me they're not supposed to be eaten as a dessert like a cinnamon roll, but slathered with butter like bread.

I (re)learned how to make palm crosses and roses.

Practicing to sing the Divine Mercy chaplet for Divine Mercy Sunday went well. I remain irrationally terrified of the choir loft. I was doing great until I thought, "Wow, I've been up here for a long time without being afraid. I haven't even thought about... falling to my death, or...accidentally tipping my sister over the side." And then I got to spend the rest of the time battling anxiety between verses.

Lewis's Reflections on the Psalms is a nice-enough read so far. Nothing ground-breaking--most of the time, when he's like, "Wow, this seems weird to modern readers," I'm like, "I never read it that way," and then the way he explains it is the way I do read it. But there were some fresh insights that I'll be mulling over.

I wasn't going to read the intro material before diving into the Gospel of John, but I'm so glad I did. So much of it takes on a whole new dimension when you know the author is arguing against people who are trying to elevate John the Baptist over Jesus.

I'd never thought about it before, but the controversy kind of makes sense. From the POV of contemporary people, John could seem like the more respectable choice. He came first, and his death came at the whim of a monarch, not for any real crime. Jesus was painted as a blasphemer and a revolutionary and died a criminal's death. You'd need to do some apologetics to explain the nuances of the truth.

The list of mild and medium inconveniences of today is inconveniently long and while I'm dead aware that it's all just tiny, not life altering stuff, it's still an amount that makes me very grumpy. So I'll throw it all here and look for solutions for one or the other and then let the rest be.

Last nights sleep was CRAP. Why? ONE FUCKING MOSQUITO. I'll have 12 and more bites, still didn't catch the bitch. Bitch is still alive. Had to get up at 4am and spray myself in anti mosquito spray I ever only use outdoors, and then go back to bed with that spray on my, just to be able to catch a little more sleep.

Couldn't get up and hunt the bitch down because I'm staying in a shared flat this week that's incredibly poorly soundproof so people wouldn't have been too amused by me running around in the cranky wooden floor middle of the night.

Which adds: I'm so not used to share place anymore. I don't notice the others much unless one walks around on the loud as fuck old floor, but I know they're next for and above floor and I don't like it.

I'm hungry.

I've spent 10h at the archive reading hand writings from 1790 when normally my brain is fried after 6h of archive work. So brain is extra extra fried.

And I feel like I didn't go through enough files, while I read through hundreds of pages and cases.

All while we have 30C outside. That's 10C more than I can bear.

And so much sun outside.

And tomorrow big meeting with boss with some annoying things to agree on.

And I can't even watch the daily Simpsons to unwind at 6pm because the TV only works with dvd here in this room.

And I still gotta go grab dinner somewhere which means more heat and sun and people.

Oh and the curtains here aren't really darkening anything while at home I got it more or less dark at night.

I could add more but this is kinda enough to feel cranky.

Gonna go grab food somewhere now, then boost up the work laptop again and watch some Simpsons on Disney. And try to sleep as soon as it's dark tonight, and spray myself before I go to bed so that undead bitch can kiss my ass.

Seriously though, about Emma (2020): I really liked the short little scene where Emma was crying on the windowsill after having been mean and forced to self-reflect, and her father came to just kinda worriedly/awkwardly hang out with her.

I mean, the father was mostly portrayed as a pretty silly character, but I liked that moment because to me, it showed that despite his silliness, he really loves and cares about his little girl and doesn't want her to be sad. It was a very short moment, but I think it gave their father-daughter relationship a lot of depth.

A very sweet little moment that stuck with me, that is all.
