Re-introducing Palette Peachy, Wally's playful pet Persian cat!
Tumblr media
Yeah, now that I have a more firm grasp on her character, I decided to give lil Pal-Pal here a bit of a makeover, introduction wise. I tried to mimic as much as the Website's style as possible so she'd fit in better.
The first one was kinda rushed/created on impulse so I didn't really think too deeply on the execution of it
In her original take, she was just standing there while on the website, everyone was displaying their "talents". I wanted to get a full body piece for this, so the best I could do was use a playful paw swat pose for now. You know. Palette the Playful Persian kitty?
I also shortened her bio a bit to tidy it up a tad more and changed up a few words, but overall nothing much has changed to her.
I plan on making a full reference sheet for her later on, but for now, I hope this revamp is more befitting!~

How Not to Paint Miniatures Lesson of the Day: Bad things happen when you get down to the last bit of spray varnish in the can. Throw it away. Don’t be cheap. I had to spend some time touching up this little guy.
He will go up for sale along with some other new minis I just finished up on Monday, May 8. Check them out! Even if not to buy it makes me feel good to have people view them.

My grandmother Tordis loved animals. In the few photos I have seen of her, she will often pose with her farm animals. On the back of the photo it would say her name and the name of the animal she was photographed with. I never got to meet her, but I like to think (and hope) that within me I carry all the love that she had for others. My mom asked me to scan and retouch these beautiful portraits of her so all her siblings can have their own copy. I love her different moods in these, like she was mirroring the animals she was posing with. The playfulness of the goats makes Tordis smile with a happy energy. While the horse Kari is stern in her expression, my grandmother Tordis is looking seriously down into the lense of whomever is capturing the photo. She looks posed, but I suspect it was just a passing moment and expression. I never knew her, but I am imagine that she was just a natural person like that.

Touched up both Carpophagous Corner and Riverside Grove
I think I'll spread the renovations over time, inside and outside, because retconning everything would just kill the immersion I feel

Paintbrush, PlasGlue, and Holy Clippers: Sparse Marns Part V: Touchup and Shading
Of all the phase of minipainting, Touchup is perhaps the most Mysterious u_u It eats time like a blackhole, but describing it takes hardly anytime at all. Tl;dr: This will mostly be pictures
Ok so, when last we left our Intrepid Heroes:
Tumblr media
Touchup is exactly what it says on the tin: it's going around the models, cleaning up any errant-painting you may have done. At first I tried doing this directly and by-model, but it quickly became an endless repetition of self-corrections so I turned to my most Loyal and Powerful Ally: The Notebook >:3 >:3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I looked over the models, noting down the misstrokes on each one, then transferred those to a list by color. Then I methodically went down the lists, checking off each fix until they were all done. This worked very well. Obvsl you want to use as precise a brush as you can get for this step, and really want to be as careful and controlled with said brush as you can to avoid making more work for yourself. I didn't feel like the craft store brushes I'd already bought would be able to handle this part of the process so I went out and got some finer detailed ones from the gamestore. I started with Army Painter's The Psycho
Tumblr media
Which... had problems. It was fine enough, but I REALLY didn't like the triangular handle, I found it VERY difficult to manipulate, and it didn't hold up very well to use at all. I haven't painted in A LONG TIME so that could be my mishandling rather than shoddiness, but either way It started to fray, then one of the hairs pulled loose leading the rest of the brush and painting where I didn't want it, then it bent making that worse, so I tried trimming it down, and then the tip split, and it just wasn't a fun time. So I turned to Army Painter's Super Detail instead
Tumblr media
This worked really well, I much prefer the round design and found it better balanced, and I finished the job with it, tho by the end it was having some of the same problems so yeah, I'm probably mishandling in someway(I suspect by not keeping them wet enough). During this step I also decided I'd like to paint the little round bit beneath the rifle handles silver so I got out some
Tumblr media
This looked good, but in hindsight I probably should have used my Lead or Steel instead as this was the brightest silver I had and so I couldn't really highlight it later. I also decided to paint the little clip-looking things on their ankle circles gold, cuz Why Not :> :> :> Oh! And during this step I accidentally knocked off Surprise's knife counter-balancing from it while painting some details, so I just left it off til I was done with this step, then glued it back on before shading. Anyway: after HUGE amounts of time over numerous days(kind of a busy week unfortunately so I didnt have much paint time >-< >-<), this is what the Lads looked like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, for a closer look, here's detailed shots of Sarge

and cHeavy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With touchup done(next time I WILL endeavor to note my times -_-) I moved onto Shading and my Shade Paints
Tumblr media
Shades do what they say on the tin: they add shadows and make your recesses nice and dark, which allows you to make some really nice and authentic-looking contrasts across the mini. This step also takes LOTS of time but not because application is complex. These are glazes and super easy to apply, you just get a medium-size brush( a shade or glaze brush; about a size 1 or 0) and put it where you want it, but you have to wait 45 minutes btwn each application to let the shades dry fully, lest your model-handling slosh them about the model, Glooping bizarrely and ruining the illusion of "natural" shadows.
So, if you were doing a simple all-model, one-tone shade, this could only take you ~an hour; 15mins for application and then the 45 for drying. BUT I am ME, so I wanted to do different complimentary tone-shades for each color, and that took MUCH more time; I spent about a day and an hour on this step(I believe this was wednesday and thursday of this week). I could have saved some time on application by doing a "spotshade", shading only at the recesses, but I wanted to create nice gradients across the open planes of the models during the next two steps, so I shaded the whole model.
My original plan was thus: the Grey for the whites, the Yellow for the yellows, the Red(fleshshade) for the oranges and browns, the Sepia for the gold, parchment, and light-brown handgrips, and the Black(nuln oil) for the silver and bronze. That didn't work out tho. The Yellow didn't create very good shadows and, since I wanted a warmer and brighter look anyway, I decided to go with the Fleshshade for the yellows, oranges, golds, browns, and bronze(it's alread such a dark, rich color that I felt like the amount of darkening nuln oil would do wouldnt really fit the color scheme). BUT the fleshshade didn't really stand out with the oranges so I ended up using a purple, Beserker Bloodshade, instead
Tumblr media
This worked Quite Nicely, and was the reason it ended up taking me an extra hour the next day(me forgetting to do it the day before had Nothing to Do With It u_u u_u). Here's what they looked like shaded, with the exception of the magazines cuz this was RIGHT before I did that
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here's more detail shots on Sarge is less natural lighting in case the shading isn't terribly visible here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's my image limit XD XD XD
The next post will cover me going in to re-brighten the panels to set creating those gradients when I do the the highlighting, then doing that and, if I still have enough image space after that, basing!
Seeya then OvO OvO
