I have decided to re-read the entire series of The Queen's Thief and I was not emotionally ready.

In the last 3 days while at work I have read The Thief, Destruction, and just finished The Queen of Attolia.

I thought I remembered the joy and heartbreak and wonder and fear and awe and countless nameless feelings that these books inspire but nope. It feels like I'm half my age again, curled up on a library window ledge meeting these characters in this world for the first time.

Oh my gosh, so many. Just scrolling through the ideas in my fic idea document:

"Black Tie" by Grace Petrie as a trans Check Please fic featuring nonbinary!Lardo, nonbinary!Shitty, trans man!Jack, and trans man!Bitty (I almost wrote this one, and I believe I've mentioned it here before)

"Afterglow" by Taylor Swift as Gen and Irene from the Queen's Thief (I wrote a parody of this song for that pairing, but a fic would also be good)

"Timshel" by Mumford and Sons as Sophos and Helen from the Queen's Thief, or honestly Helen and Gen (I also did a parody of this one and sort of referenced it in a drabble based on another song, but MORE)

"Enchanted" by Taylor Swift for pre-relationship Gen and Irene

"Prayer" by Morten Lauridsen for Irene and Gen post-miscarriage (I've touched on that topic in drabbles from Irene’s perspective, and Irene's perspective again, and also from Sophos's perspective, oddly enough, but always briefly, and I don't think I know enough about pregnancy loss to do the topic justice in a longer-form piece)

As much as I might sympathize with being in a niche fandom and not having any fic to read, I can’t help but find it a little silly when people are like “I hate going on AO3 looking for fanworks for [story in a relatively niche medium like books, comics, or video games] and then there’s less when I filter out [the movie or TV adaptation]!”

Because like. That’s how that works. That’s just how adaptations into mediums with broader appeal are. Unless the niche thing was a total outlier juggernaut and the adaptation was bad, like bad bad, that’s just the way it’s going to be. It’s not automatically a reflection on people not properly appreciating the source material.

And again, I totally understand wanting more to read of the thing you love, I get that. I even get that it can feel bad if fic of the source material pulls in adaptation elements and “taints” the beloved original thing. But I think it’s crucial to remember that adaptation fandom didn’t take anything from source fandom. 99% of the time, fans of the adaptation never would have touched the original thing. They weren’t pulled away from trying to read that book to watch the evil show version, they were just watching a show based on a book they probably had never heard of and had no plan to read. That person writing “tainted” fic of the original only read the original because they liked the adaptation.

And, most importantly, That wealth of fanworks for [adaptation] wouldn’t be a wealth of fanworks for [original] if the adaptation hadn’t been made, they just never would’ve been written at all.

#this is separate from being upset with an adaptation for being a bad adaptation BTW #being upset at a big budget adaptation for not delivering on the thing you love is different from being bitter at other fans about it #like I’ve been on all the possible sides of this #but resenting or being frustrated with the other side #doesn’t get you anywhere #if and when the Murderbot show and the TQT movie happen #it’s going to see a big explosion of adaptation fandom #and I’m going to not be upset about it because again #the adaptation isn’t *taking* fans or fanworks from the original #as much as we might wish for the original to have as many fans as the adaptation #it just was never going to happen #and while bitterness can feel cathartic in the moment #it’s either going to just make us unhappy #or worse drive new fans away

Do you have a favorite scene in the queen’s thief books?

Hey! Hm, the books have so many great scenes! I don't believe I can pick just one! However, I will limit myself to a select few.

At the end of QoA when Gen finds out it was Moira who told Attolia where to find him and goes to the conservatory to complain pray. That, to me, was a very personal and intimate scene. Someone else has pointed out before that the Queen's Thief series serves as a great example of what it means to have real faith in God. Of course it doesn't center around Christianity, but I um... I felt represented in Eugenides' struggle of knowing his God/the Gods, knowing that He/they will answer your prayer if you seek Him because you are favored by Him... yet experiencing real, painful setbacks in life and discovering that they're all supposed to be part of some greater, all-foreseeing "plan" or whatever. It doesn't matter in the moment when it hurts. There's real loss. There's real hurt. And I feel relief in the depiction of Eugenides who doesn't hesitate to take his very real pain, his confusion, his legitimate anger in front of an altar and bring an offering and lay down and be stubborn enough not to leave until he receives an answer that he can live with. That, my friend, is raw faith. The despair is real, the grief is real, but the God is also real. As real as Eugenides' right hand. As clear as day. And God's answers are as real as the glass that shattered in Attolia's winter garden. That's what faith is, and that's what it looks like. It's as real and as honest as it gets.

2. When Sophos decides to leave the slave barracks, and no one stops him. That was quite a power move back there.

3. When Gen is finally forced to face off against Costis...Costis gets his satisfaction... and Gen steps into being the King!!

4. Costis mending that one Lady's tin pot and then him & Kamet crossing over the Taymets. That was so wonderfully refreshing.

5. The game of catch that the whole court played with Eugenides in ROTT.

6. The entire battle against the Medes, pretty much, from the time Gen rode into battle until they danced out their victory on the roof.

OMG YOU LOVE THE QUEENS THIEF!!???? Just when I thought you couldn’t get any cooler, you prove me wrong. I f**king love that series, Gen and Attolia are *chef’s kiss* and my god the way everything is slowly revealed and you learn why you felt so stupid reading it—ITS CAUSE YOU FEEL THE WAY THE REST OF THE CHARACTERS FEEL WHEN GEN IS just DOING HIS THING, and he’s a bamboozler—just like, not on purpose sometimes which makes me love him more

i'm so honored that you think i'm cool haha but yes to all of this!!! i don't post about TQT much since it's a smallish/oldish fandom and i rarely see it crop up on my dash or think to go looking in tags for it, but it has a very special place in my heart as one of my top book series of all time. this was MY Early Teens Formative Fantasy Series the way many of my wheel of time crew talk about WOT being for them! i have a vivid memory of trying and failing to convey how mindblowing the end of the thief was to my friend while leaving my high school auditorium jfkjgh i wish more people had read it, but i feel like everyone who HAS read it agrees that it's top tier. today i saw it described as "one of the fantasy genre's best-kept secrets" and that is so accurate!

gen is SUCH a fantastic character, he's so layered and it's always so satisfying to encounter a character who IS so genuinely clever and constantly proves it in his behavior, rather than us just being repeatedly told that he's Super Smart, Trust Me, You Guys (sideeyes tuon). he is playing 4d chess with not only the other characters, but with the reader too at all times and it's a wonder to behold. yet at the same time he is just a silly little guy! <3 and gen and attolia are THE gold standard for enemies to lovers & arranged marriage to real love (two of my all-time favorite romance tropes.......probably because of my having read this series at a formative age lmao!) and that's that! god attolia's arc of opening herself up to the love and affection she's shut out yet craved for years is so important to me. it's been several years since i last read the series and yet i was browsing tags today and found a passage relating to that arc which i 100% echoed in a fic i wrote within the past 6 months, THAT is how deeply this series is ingrained into my subconscious!

Y’all, I am offering THREE things in Fandom Trumps Hate this year, and bidding is now open, which means I encourage you to check them out! Here’s what I’m offering:

New Tag Game: Rec Your Own Fics

ok so I'm starting a new one of those tag games. Because they have to start somewhere and I want to.

Rules: If you’re tagged, make a rec list of your own fics that you’re most proud of. The ones you personally want people to read because you know they’re good. The ones you get extra excited when you get comments on them because people are responding to what you know is your best work. As part of the list, say why you’re proud of them! Participant’s choice on how many that is and where you draw the line on pride, but the more the better. Bonus points for fics that you like to reread yourself or fics that have low engagement because they’re in a small fandom or an unpopular ship/trope. Then tag however many people you feel like to continue the game. (If you want a guide number, try for seven or however many fics you listed)

Secondary rule: If you get tagged and you’re not a fic writer, consider doing the same for art you’ve done or meta you’ve written that you’re proud of.

Leaves and Shells Fandom: Avatar The Last Airbender

This one is about grief—it focuses on adult Zuko dealing with Iroh’s death. It’s not a light fic, but it is a soft one. I’m proud of it in part because it’s 3 years old and I still like it as much as I did when I wrote it, and also because I think I captured the core emotions well.

Numb Fandom: Batfam

This one is a Cass and Damian bonding fic, where they try to come to terms with having hurt and killed people. I’m proud of this one because it’s not super common to get these two paired together, and letting them interact dug up some thoughts I didn't even know I had until I started writing, and the epiphanies show.

With Friends Like These Fandom: Young Justice

On the intersection between the friendships of Artemis and Robin, and Artemis Crock and Dick Grayson. I’m proud of this because it fills in a missing bit of canon very neatly, and the selection of moments shown give a good impression of their dynamic. (It’s also the oldest fic of mine on this list)

And The Gods are Silent (when you ask them why) Fandom: The Queen’s Thief

Eugenides and the loneliness of immortality (AU)—in which Gen is dosed with the water of life at the end of Queen of Attolia, and we follow the AU from there. I’m proud of it because it shows the whole spectrum of emotion, from grief and tragedy and major character death to reunions and joy in the happy ending.

Tangled TQT fusion. Eugene Fitzherbert is a descendant of the thieves of Eddis, and it’s 100% canon compliant (to the movie, if not the show). This is the most recent work of mine on this list. I’m proud of this one because there was so much I was able to weave together in very few words when it comes to continuity nods and even a tiny smidge of action.

Logs, Letters, and Other Lost Things Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries

Grief again. This time ART’s grief after losing Murderbot to the machine equivalent of old age. I’m proud of this one for similar reasons to the last; I captured a lot of emotion—and a very bittersweet vibe—in a very compact little story. I’m also proud of it because when I posted it it caused complete carnage in the discord and that was really fun to witness.

Okay tqt fandom I have questions about Moira's Pen stories because I am confused.

Do you think the women at the Costis/Kamet household are all costis's relatives before Laela shows up?? There's three of them, all the kids call them aunty, that makes sense, right?

Costis has kids who are half siblings. IS THE IMPLICATION THEY'RE HALF SIBLINGS THROUGH LAELA??

IS THE REALIZATION IN GITTA'S STORY THAT SHE IS SACRED TO EUGENIDES?? because Eugenides means "wellborn," but Gita's name ALSO means wellborn.

Like Costis and Kamet are together but Laela can marry one of them and they all get something out of it, Kamet loves Laela (but is in love with Costis) and Laela gets taken care of and a family and freedom and peace, and Costis gets an heir. Am I reading that right? Help I just want to understand. Costis and Kamet are definitely still together. I love them. ;-;

Bc it's Phaedo who has STEP-siblings, but Timris has a Half-brother named Philo. So Thalia(?) married Dumonius who had been married before and already had kids(?) There's cousins also, so these could very well be Dumonius's sisters.

I think the thing throwing me off is that Timris is named as Costis's son. I can't remember if Laela is too old to have kids (?) But my theory works better if Timris was called Kamet's son, and Phaedo is his half-brother. I guess they both could've married women "all the papas," but then why not just explain. Kamet counts as a Papa, right??

Okay so it goes Eugenides & Attolia -> Eugenia [who becomes Queen of somewhere that isn't Attolia? They do call her queen! She obviously didn't become queen if Pheris is the Princess Thief] -> [someone] -> [someone & Brael Royalty] -> princesses Gitta & Hennis. Gitta will be marrying the prince of Ephestalia, who is most likely the descendent of Eddis's grandson (the Union King). Right?

...my takeaway here is that Gitta is going to be a Queen Thief, yes? She shares a translation of the Eugenides name, and is betrothed to the heir to Ephestalia, and Eugenia saw her and Knew she was sacred to Eugenides. Tykus knew and that's why he had her read Gen's books. Eugenia only concedes to the name Gitta because the meaning is the same(?)

How did Eugenia simply die by the fire? Was it because she didn't take an oath?

....IS FALLING ASLEEP COUNTING AS A DEATH BY A FALL, MWT?????

Is the rest of fandom also convinced the Goddess addressing Eugenides in QOA Alyta because she calls him "Little Thief," says he made an offering at her altar, and he doesn't remember her?

Relius and Teleus continue to be the ultimate. No questions. No notes.

I'm seeing other people talk about queerbaiting but tbh that was never my feeling? Even now? It feels very much like MWT just looked at how relationships worked in ancient Greece, and that's what she models it after. That Costis might have had a wife and children wouldn't have changed the fact that he's in love with and partnered to Kamet? Likewise we already knew Relius sleeps with everyone, but that Teleus is only ever with Relius, so it makes sense that Relius has a wife. I also think it makes sense for the captain of the guard to remain unmarried (like...you cannot hold a vow higher than your service to the monarch, style. If you want to be married, you leave the position.) Also we know having multiple lovers isn't unheard of (one of Gen's attendants and Baron Artadorus both have lovers.)

Maybe I'm just being too forgiving idk.
