I'm almost done with season one of Ranking of Kings and it keeps blowing me away with its characters and the oodles of nuances and layers they're carrying.

It's ridiculously clever how the fairy tale aesthetic (which is gorgeous - like looking at an animated picture book) uses well-worn archetypes, narratives, and character appearances to throw you for a loop. I'm thoroughly impressed particularly by the seemingly "evil" characters who quickly reveal they're anything but.

Like Prince Daida, the younger, brutish half-brother to the main character, Bojji, had all the introduction to mark his path as another Joffery-like Kid Sociopath. But nah, man, he's actually horrified of any untoward acts and is capable of sympathy and loneliness.

Or Bojji's best friend, Kage, a shadowy thief who's led a shitty life that's left him cynical, except right after episode 2, when he sees Bojji's suffering, he decided to be his best friend right then and there, and has stuck by his side since. This shadow blob, who could have been a roguishly selfish asshole, is instead Bojji's biggest supporter!

I love that Bebin, the sneaky snake guy, who seemingly has a rivalry with the Good, Blond Knightly Knight Domas, does not have some grand plan to quietly betray his King and take over. Hell, I'm not sure what his goal really is (as befitting his nature), but he's far from some treacherous backstabber, just a really damn good information gatherer/spy.

He and his snake buddies are also friends! I love that the big, fucking two-headed snake, Mitsumata, is actually super kind and loyal, largely because Bebin actually treats his reptilian friends with love for their well-being. Can I say how much I appreciate all the snakes being good creatures instead of reducing them to yet another Evil Reptile thing? They're all nice and helpful.

It's actually the Handsome, Fair-Haired Domas, who actually betrays Bojji (under orders, but still) via attempted assassination instead of the usual suspect. Which he acknowledges and works to fix. Like holy shit, it's NOT the Snake Charmer, it's Mr. Good Knight. Because Domas has a complex about loyalty to his kingdom versus what he feels is right. And it eats at him. Oh my GOD, these characters are a lot and it's great.

I also love Despa, who's foppish and physically weak, hardly what you'd expect to be Bojji's trainer to be a better fighter. But he's incredibly quick-witted and can strategize like a motherfucker. He literally learned fighting by observation and passes that knowledge to others. Like he looks like a french coward, but nah man, he's a good, smart egg.

But for my money, the best is Bojji's stepmother, Queen Hiling, who starts off as the supposed "evil stepmother", but really at worst, can be blunt. There is never a single doubt she doesn't love both her sons and will go to hell and back from them (symbiotically, it is appropriate she has healing powers.) Even her demanding and unmovable personality is shown in a good light, because she gets shit down and refuses to rest when her kingdom is in danger (and people around her are often in shock and awe in response.)

I love her. She's great. I hope she kicks Bosse in the nuts because what the FUCK is that dude doing? What is his plan? What are you doing, my dude?

I just love that these characters and their specific archetype were deconstructed with a myriad of contrasting personality traits from what we initially expected of them, and never in a Dark and Edgy Way. Not every character is "Good", what they are are richly defined with a lot of admirable traits.

Man, I'm gonna be sad once I catch up because lord knows when season two's gonna arrive.

This is why I think Kishimoto didn’t really think about his word building. He just went “You know what would be cool?” And then came up with something completely stupid/

Me: no no no you don’t understand THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT HE DID. THIS IS LITERALLY IT. I HAVE SEEN IT WAY TOO MANY TIMES FOR IT NOT TO BE. Examples off the top of my head being *especially* in the 4th war.

-There is- literally an entire *episode* of Naruto’s training with Killer B dedicated to Naruto learning he can’t make shadow clones in Kyuubi mode because that will *actually kill him* because of how the chakra drain works in that mode. It is literally hand waved the moment Naruto leaves the island because Kishi refuses to let *any* character other than Naruto be useful and so he needs to go to like five different places at once to fight zetsu in kyuubi mode. in universe it’s something about Kurama not trying to kill Naruto with chakra drain anymore but like- that isn’t explained until multiple episodes of Naruto casually using shadow clones and *not thinking about the consequences* and his *trainer Killer B* not stopping him or reminding him about the danger so clearly that excuse was thrown in last second to appease the plot hole.

-In the same episodes as the above, Naruto learns he can’t use RASENGAN in kyuubi mode because, in a potentially neat twist, it turns out the Rasengan works on the same principles as a biju bomb and when he tries to rasengan the kyuubi chakra converts it into a biju bomb instead. You can look at *almost any 4th war fight with naruto in it* and see him spamming rasengan. in kyuubi chakra cloak mode.

-Sasuke fighting Deidara pre 4th war. He’s literally out of chakra but somehow not only summons a boss summon, but forces it to shield him from a fatal blast. Because Cool Points™.

-The entire. fricken. 4th war. Is building up to Madara being the final boss. I am not joking. Like- I know I’m not a published author or whatever but I’ve been writing multi chapter fic for somewhere around 7-8 years and I’ve been reading gobs of stories since I had the brain power to process words. The narrative build up is there. The entire point to nerfing the 5 kage so they can’t beat Madara, to *all of the Biju* not being able to beat Madara and getting retaken into the jyuubi/making him the jyuubi jinchuuriki is one long, poorly executed difficulty spike for the final boss. There is an *entire scene* that goes for 5 plus minutes of Obito using what he thinks is his dying will to pull out a fragment of chakra from the Ichibi and Gyuuki respectively because that directly ties into the tug of war that happened however many eps back when Obito was the kyuubi Jinchuuriki. Naruto had received chakra from every biju except the Ichibi and Gyuuki and was able to use those as a connection to *pull the biju out* of the seal and free them/rescue them and thus de-power Obito, but he couldn’t do it with Ichibi and Gyuuki because he’d never gotten that piece of their chakra and couldn’t resonate with them/pull them free. And Obito, when he does his heel face turn and becomes good again, risks using what could literally be his last moments to get those two bits of chakra and give them to Naruto. That is SCREAMING final boss setup. Madara was supposed to be the big bad, Sasuke and Naruto were gonna get their act together, fight him in a big messy final fight while everyone else is stuck in Infinite Tsukuyomi, then Obito’s gift of those last two chakra resonances would let Naruto pull the biju out of Madara and depower/defeat him. It is SO OBVIOUS.

And then instead we get Kaguya at the literal last second, no fight with Madara, this guy who basically stomped all over the world goes out like a *chump* because Kishi didn’t want the money train to end and thought a literal moon goddess coming out of nowhere would be “cool”.

Those are just off the top of my head but there are literally hundreds of more incidents where if you actually *look* at what is narratively happening, the tropes being used, the build up, the prior “world-building” you can see that Kishi genuinely does not think about his timeline, his world building, any of that. He just goes with the Rule of Cool and what he thinks will be the most shocking “plot twist” at the time. It is. *So bad*.

Basic Headcannons for pokemon Y/N

. They flinch when they see people while traveling, hand going to their pokeballs. They relax when they've passed them.

. Pokemon Y/N picks fights more than Sasuke and Naruto combined.

. They also win more.

. Pokemon Y/N has gotten in trouble on multiple occasions for bringing out Lugia and attempting to start fights whenever a villiager insults their friends/teammates.

. They take a while to understand norm animals and summons. Summons were a bit easier to understand for them, but regular animals? What do you mean they don't have abilities? What do you mean they cant be my friend? What do you mean they can't understand me????

. Eventually pokemon Y/N learns how to leave the local wildlife alone.

. Pokemon Y/N cuddles woth their pokemon all the time, often times accidentally scaring someone who went to go get them and didn't expect to see Zoroark or Mimikyu

. No one understands how pokemon work and Y/N is constantly trying to explain it.

. Y/N takes one look at pein and brings out Arceus and MewTwo.

. Y/N is suddenly able to break the '6 pokemon at a time' rule and is super excited about it, no one really gets why.

. Y/N is constantly mistaking people for gym leaders or other people they knew back in their world.

. It also took a while for Y/N to understand that the big bad guys didn't just want to steal all pokemon or summons and did in fact murder people.

. Murder also took a bit to get used to.

. Y/N doesn't need running shoes to run anymore. Another thing people didn't understand.

. Magic healing hands work on pokemon??? Y/N proceeds to learn how to heal just so they can heal their pokemon.

. They absolutely love to confuse people and flex. "Yeah, you've collected a few of the tailed beasts, but do you have God? How about the creators of time and space? Or the controller of antimatter? Huh? Huh?"

. Pokemon scare most people until Y/N brings out the cute ones like Eevee and Vulpix.

. The pokemon Nintales and the narutoverse Nintales cause some confusion, surprisingly they do end up getting along after a while. Y/Ns pokemon ninetales likes naruto a lot.

•No one understood why they're so strict about perfect counters for chakra natures, yeah some jutsus are good for certain strategies, but you don't have to only use fire types when fighting Yamato. Please he can only take so much

•The first time they see Sasuke or Kakashi use chidori against an earth wall and break through it, they have an aneurysm

•When Y/N finds out about how many ninja die during missions, they started walking around the graveyard with a pokedoll and some ghost types

•Pokemon Y/N and Ghost Y/N would like each other, P!Y/N gets to comfort ghosts and G!Y/N gets to interact with ghosts that aren't obnoxious

•They give people nicknames based off of what type of trainer they look like or if they resemble people from their universe, and they 100% hatched some new Pokemon just to name after their new friends. IE a luxray named Sasuke and a buizel named Naruto

•Someone has definitely tried to kill them, only to be stopped by a pokemon jumping in front of the attack. They better hope that pokemon knew protect or had the sturdy ability, cause the second their pokemon goes back into their ball to rest, they're bringing out the big guys

•I hc that unless you attack Y/N out of a pokemon battle, like when they're just walking with the pokemon or they aren't out at all, they are impervious to physical attacks. If you strike them in-between switches or when one faints you could hurt them then, but you'd have to deal with a hoard of angry pokemon jumping out of their balls to protect their trainer

•The first time Y/N and Pein met, they stood there for a couple minutes pulling out ever god, legendary, and pseudo legendary they have

They need to dismiss the ANBU outside his door. They need to cast a seal of silence on the room. And they need to tell him to get on his knees so they can use his dirty little slut mouth.

Peel off that clingy black mask and fuck his throat till he chokes.

Wrap a hand around it, feel it bulge, tighten their grip just enough to cut off his air.

But the telltale blush sneaks down his throat. His legs tremble as he lets his partner pull him to his feet and back him up until his ass hits the edge of his desk.

His desk. Shit, Shizune’s gonna kill him if he gets anything worse than coffee splashed on his filing. At least with Tsunade, she only had sake to worry about...

Kakashi grumbles words to this effect. Rolls his eyes as fingers unlatch the buckles on his armoured tunic (god, fucking insatiable, honestly...). He snaps at those same fingers when they grasp his face instead, turning it to the side, squeezing hard enough to hurt.

(Hard enough that under the mask, there’ll be bruises.)

But he never says no. And he certainly never says the word that both of them agreed on, the one that will make all of this stop.

He tilts his head back, sighs like this is all beneath him, and lets himself break.

Look, this role involves a lot of stress, okay? He never wanted it. He’s never had ambition, or a desire to lead. He wears the damn hat because somebody has to. He does the job because it needs doing, just like so many others (lightning arcs through a young girl’s body; a knife draws a red line across a man’s throat).

Still, there are some perks. So he lets himself admit, as his partner’s white, inhuman thumb slides down to cradle the apple of his throat, and his scarred lips graze the pulse under his ear. Sometimes, they almost make all of this worth it.

Obito agrees. This is a duty too - a vital part of keeping Konoha running. A country is only as strong as its kage, after all.

The difference is, unlike Bakashi, he’s more than happy with his job.

Born and raised in Ecruteak City, Kage had a difficult childhood. He dropped out of high school to take care of his mom at 16 cause his dad was a dead beat. His father would came back when he was 19 but left shortly after Kage’s Mom became pregnant again. His mother sadly passed away during childbirth, which left raising Chiyo, his little sister, up to Kage.

From there, Kage joined Team Rocket because stealing money gave a more sustainable food source for him and his little sister. He decided to quit though when Giovanni disbanded the group, also when Chiyo was getting more interested in what Kage did for work. He could never bear being a bad example for his little sister.

Kage worked at a few pokemarts, but because of his lack of education he didn’t get much money. At 26 he met Calhoun when Cal was on a research trip to Johto and Kage helped him out. Cal then asked if he wanted to be an assistant which Kage accepted pretty much right away.

Now at 28 he mostly stays at the Webb Bug-Type Sanctuary and Research Center in Unova, located right next to Pinwheel Forest, where he takes care of all the rescued bugs from around the world. Cal has a very open door policy for employees' children (due to understanding being a sole caretaker himself) so when Chiyo isn’t at school, she’s able to be with Kage at work.

Extra bits:

Mochi, Kage's Umbreon, and Momo, Chiyo's Eevee, are siblings. Kage's mother used to breed an Espeon and Umbreon to sell Eevees to trainers just starting out. Sadly the pair died shortly after their mother did, being old and heartbroken by their trainer's passing.

So I’ve been thinking, Pokémon but like Naruto: 

Clans specialize with certain types of Pokémon because instead of kekkei genkai they do that.  The Uchiha mainly capture and train Fire types, the Nara deal with Dark type Pokémon though they do still care for the Stantler pack that lives in the woods that surround the village, while the Yamanaka train Psychic type Pokémon and so on. 

Which means the Inuzuka are the odd men out because while yeah there are dog Pokémon, for the most part their ninkin are dog-like Pokémon. I like to think that Akamaru is a Furfrou. 

The Hokage is the very best. Top Trainer. Each Hidden Village has a gym and to be a Kage you have to defeat every gym.

The Akatsuki is like Team Rocket, only instead of wanting the Pokémon to sell or eat— whatever the Italian dude that runs Team Rocket wants them for —The Akatsuki wants all Pokémon to be free. Think Eco-terrorism.

Now on to the fun part, the Konoha 12:

Like I said before, I think it would be funny if Akamaru was a Furfour.

Yeah okay Naruto gets a Vulpex that keeps nearly setting him on fire until they have an Ash-Pikachu style understanding, but he also has a Croagunk that likes to eat ramen with him and constantly gets itself (and himself) into trouble. Naruto and the Croagunk meet in the woods while Naruto is on his two year journey with Jiraiya., 

Sakura starts off with a Roselia because they’re pretty and she’s twelve and girly and more into pageants only to then discover her love for fighting and capture a Hitmonchan and Snubbull.

Sasuke’s family— clan —dies before he gets Growlithe, the usual starter Pokémon for Uchiha’s. His first Pokémon is a Salazzel, a fire and poison type. It’s through Salazzel Sasuke finds he likes working with poison types more then fire and is what causes him to capture an Ekans when he’s with Orochimaru.

Shikamaru (my love) I’m stuck on. Like I see his first Pokémon being wither a Nuzleaf or a Larviatar, both of those Pokémon would fall asleep with him, on his chest as they don’t train.

Ino’s starter is a Ralts she dresses up. Pokémon!Ino knits sweaters and hats for her Pokémon so they can keep stylish. 

Choji’s first Pokémon is a Pancham and here’s why, Panchams can use Iron Fist which  “Strengthens punch-based moves to 1.2× their power” which just makes me think of the Sasuke retrieval arc and Choji’s fight against Jirobo.

Shino starts with a Weedle but like, he also has a pocket full of Wurmple and a Spinarak on his shoulder.

Hinata! Has! An Eevee! So everyone expected Hinata to choose a strong Psychic type Pokémon like other Hyuga’s only for her to chose and Eevee and Hinata can’t explain why she chose that Eevee just that when their eyes met they understood one another. And for the longest time Hinata refuses to evolve her Eevee. Only one day she just walks out into the village holding an Espeon and refuses to explain shit. 

Neji has a Meditite. 

Lee has Tyrouge that only has one arm. I feel like since he can’t use jutsu’s in the show his Pokémon should be handicapped as well only to then be one of the strangest fighting type Pokémon to make an appearance in the Hidden Leaf village.

Tenten has metal style Pokémon, like that’s her thing and her first Pokémon was a Mawile.
