Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapters #00-01

I'm annotating every chapter of trigun, both the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read). Literally just writing down everything I notice about details, version differences, translation notes, etc. and also being gay about the characters. happy pride month

I had other stuff to do today yesterday so I only got through a little bit but pace will pick up tomorrow today (1 volume/week is faster than i thought...)

First thing I noticed was the difference in the number of volumes, or the number of chapters in each volume. In my JP copy, volume 1 ends at Chapter #07: Rem, while Overhaul (and I assume every version after the first JP print) ends at #12: River of Life.

We see his serious expression already! I don't remember '98 doing so this early on so it's pretty notable to me...

Just thinking about how Vash counted each individual gunshot being fired during all that chaos... dear god.... During my first read/watch I thought it was just silly Rule of Cool protagonist moment but not really. This guy actually has Insane perception, either from being a plant or sheer practice. Or both.

Also immediately after all that, I really love the way the aftermath is shown here. The only things you can hear are the creaks of the light and the crying boy. It really brings out the tension in the atmosphere.

Finally, something other than unneccesary bits! If you look at the flooring under the toy gun, the perspective lines are pointing SW-NE. This corresponds to the flooring on Vash's right, whose right arm is also suspiciously out-of-frame... This is definitely the moment he took the toy gun. I can't express the amount of Holy Shit I felt when I realized this. The detail!!!!! man!!!!!!!!!

There's a little translation error here - it should be something like "Even if he were still alive, he wouldn't be able to move an inch!"

One of my favorite Vash moves with one of my favorite Tumblr heritage posts.

This is not really based on any drawn details, but I think this is the moment that Vash readies the toy gun, puts it in his pocket, and picks up the ketchup. Do Not trust this man when his arm is not visible. Also finger still in gun <3 doing his part blocking one bullet at a time

And here we have Vash's first COOL cool moment!!!!!! cue my homo screaming. goddddddddd im so mentally unwell about him. agh I also absolutely love when Nightow does that thing where he screen-tones a character's skin just because. It pops!! It's unique!! I love it!! I eat it up every time!!!

Here's where I realize that Vash's hair antennae are pointing straight up. I should be on the lookout for when he makes the transition to the M-shaped antennae we know and love.

Also, a little untranslatable joke from the Japanese version. In Japanese, this guy calls out at Vash like "And you, don't provoke him!" except it's written with the kanji for "Hunter" (狩人 karyūdo), with a ruby pronunciation note saying "you" (おまえも omaemo). These kanji/ruby mismatch jokes are never not funny and it's so sad that there's no way to keep them in without doing...this lol

The "I counted!" reveal never fails to get me. holy shit. I love the little boy's expression when he gets his gun back :) You helped!!! and you don't have to have the real deal to be cool as balls!!!

Just lumping this with the previous two because it's a tall image, but another small translation error. Rather than being about doing harm, he's talking about recieving it (～～はゴメンだ is a hard-to-catch phrasing/idiom; it's already been discussed with the translator on a different instance). It should be more like "[...But] nobody likes getting hurt, right?"

hi anon! i'm sorry you're struggling a bit and feeling bad, just wanna give you a hug! i don't know if i'm the best person to ask this, but i'm gonna give this a little go.

as a concept, i try to remind myself not to get bogged down with numbers, because they're a fickle thing. they change with the wind, sun and the rain. because your worth isn't equated to your notes/followers/popularity.

it's important to remember that there are times fics will do really well because of the tropes, the pairing, the timing - and not the quality of your work. you can sometimes just write one thing and it gains traction, and another time write something in the same style, and it doesn't. the other thing is, some fics grow. they take time to bloom and find their audience, and that's okay too.

fandoms are also different sizes. so you can never compare numbers on numbers, because in one fandom the people reading/engaging may be different to another.

i think i did a post on this a while ago - but my tags are all wonky so i can't find it (watch me find it when this posts) so i can't link it.

but, i know it's super easy for me to say "don't get bogged with numbers", and "try to focus on how you felt writing it" but somedays, even i look at things and wonder to myself what i've done wrong. it's normal, natural - i'm sharing something, and i'm critical and i want to deliver good things to lovely people like you. however, i think you'd tell me that my worth is also not attached to my followers, my notes or my popularity. but it's easy to tell someone else that, than yourself.

and, more importantly, me delivering good things doesn't equate to notes. sometimes, what someone else loves and thinks is a 10/10 is going to be different to another.

because what makes fandom so cool and good, is that it's varied.

people want different things. people write different things. and i preach this far too much, but you just need to find your people - or if you have, give them time. some people are snowed under with tbr's and others are trying to bury their issues in writing (talking about myself here), and others are just trying to juggle too much that their tumblr is less active.

the main thing i hope you takeaway, other than your worth not being a number, is that you have to find and remember why you love what you do. and if you don't know or can't remember, remind yourself.

go back through your work and read it - preferably in a different browser or something (so it looks different to you) and enjoy your own writing. pick out quotes, bask in what you've created. you are your first fan, the person you should write for first. so, be a fan. celebrate yourself. give yourself a pat on the back or a high five, because look, it's fucking hard creating, and it's even harder sharing it. and on top of that, fighting imposter syndrome is hard, fighting dark clouds and rainy days is hard. it is. i can't pretend it isn't.

i can't pretend it doesn't hurt when you stare at your published piece and your brain begins to wonder what you went wrong (for whatever reason that is, whether it's numbers or just something else). because it's normal to look for validation that you did a great thing and it hurts when you don't get it. but, you have to curate your experience - you have to do the things above:

remind yourself you're worth is more than a number

love what you do first. i recommended to someone/people recently to copy some of their fave lines into a document when they're editing so they can be like "fuck yeah, i did that"

also @trulybetty pointed this out to me (and it's been a god send) but on mobile (and on desktop but it's messier) you can filter out your activity. on the top left there's "all activity" but if you click it, you can filter out likes, mentions etc. and for me, i've filtered out likes, which means i can see more of the comments, reblogs (with the hashtags) and mentions - so not only do i not miss anything, but also i'm seeing more of the things that make me smile. it's not a slight on likes, but sometimes it hides all the good things that get buried.

i hope in some small way some of this is nice, and it helps. but if not, just remember you're not alone, we're all human, and you deserve to be here, and pls, pls continue writing and don't quit.

Ok in regards to actual Discord, I freakin love him. Again, I was playing this game with a friend, and she said his trans experience was so relatable to her. Then I spoke with another friend and he said the same thing. We all agree he's very gender looking, even tho two of us are femme XD

When we finished the Good Ending my friend said that Discord's feminine persona looked a lot more fake than initially thought now that we knew the truth, and that's honestly great character building. The maze was such an interesting way to get to know Discord better too, even if all the mythology reference were askew lol

I think both versions of Discord are incredibly cute and adorable but Masc Discord is my favorite cause he just looks so much more comfortable in his own skin if you know what I mean? Or maybe I'm just projecting idk

Sorry one more ask: My heart and mind are opening again to the Word of the Lord and I want to learn more about God's beliefs on Homosexuality. My heart and mind want me to believe that God is okay with it, but I feel a pull to learn more about what many Christians say that God thinks. I can't make a full decision on my own thoughts until I thoroughly educate myself on both sides. I've been on Tumblr for 10 years so I know the pro LGBT side of things. What are some resources I could look into to learn more about why homosexuality is wrong according to many Christians?

I just ran (not walked) to my room after reading this, [i type better on desktop] I GOT YOU FAM.

Firstly, I can give you the verses by which the evidence is there that homosexuality is indeed a sin. Chiefly, it doesn't matter what the Bible says if you don't believe in its authority. So I'd like to start there.

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,"

[This means that every word in the Bible is directly from God. Did men write the Bible? Yes, but think of it this way. When you write a story on paper, is it the pen writing the story, or is it you? Same thing with the Bible. It's God who wrote the Bible, [otherwise known as His Word] and men are only instruments of God. His writing utensils in this case]

Everything in the Bible is without error, additionally, every prophecy that has been written in the Bible HAS come to be true and fulfilled or WILL be fulfilled, there was never even one prophecy that hasn't come to be true or WILL come to be true in time.

If you ever have questions or find "contradictions" I'd love to walk you through it. 10/10 times this is "found" because there's something the reader didn't understand about the context of the Bible.

We as Christians are meant to be conformed to the Bible and to submit to it as our authority, this is what it means to be Christian when we love God so much [because He first loved us in redeeming us from death] that we obey His Word. If you don't submit to God then you will never grow in your life.

Now that we got the "The Bible is inerrant" speech done, I can show you the verses.

Leviticus 18:22 

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

Some objections to using the Old Testament verse:

There are laws against wearing two different fabrics and no eating of shellfish, but you're a hypocrite cause you do that too, so what's the deal?

There were three types of laws that were implemented, the moral, the ceremonial and the civil. These laws were in place because the Israelites were meant to be an example to the world and show them how to serve God, [they failed miserably, that's why Jesus had to come, but Jesus was always a part of the plan before God even created the world] Anways, Jesus, since He perfectly obeyed all the laws, [ He never sinned ] He fulfilled the civil and the ceremonial law. "“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." [Matt 5:17] to Even more so He declared all foods clean to eat [Mark 7:18-19] but the MORAL law [could also be referred to as the Ten Commandments] remains, which Leviticus 18:22 is a part of.

I'll move onto the New Testament verses about homosexuality now, which are a bit more black and white.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 1:26-27 

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with lust for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

But why? God, as our Creator is the one who our designer, He is also the designer for marriage.

Genesis 2:24 

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Anything apart from this, is sin.

(I'm not going to sit here and excuse all heterosexual relationships though, if there is sexual relations of any kind outside of marriage, that is sin too. So those heterosexuals who are giving into sexual temptations outside of marriage are in sin too.)

but God is clear in saying that marriage is only between male and female. Even more, Jesus Himself reiterated this.

Matthew 19:3-9

Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Okay, I'm sure you might know of my testimony in being exgay. I DONT believe in the typical "pray the gay away", I think that belief is moreso bull if anything. You can't always pray away temptation because it can always come back to resurface. Temptation isn't a sin anyways [Jesus was tempted in Matt 4:1-11]

To reiterate, I'm saying that same-sex attraction isn't a sin because we can't always control who we are attracted to, but we CAN control our thoughts and impulses, and we can deny any fantasies that we are tempted to play in our heads. I don't think I need to say this, but our thoughts lead to actions and of course, those actions of entering into a same-sex relationship is wrong too.

It's like if I started dating a male, if I am sexually tempted by him then as a Christian I am going to obey God and throw away those thoughts of sexual fantasies instead of letting it get so far in my heart that it becomes an action. If you don't deny those thoughts and you entertain them, that is a sin too because you are entertaining the thought of sin [God can see our thoughts too if you didn't know, there is nothing hidden from Him]

You wanna know the second half of that 1 Corinthians 6 verse I shared up above?

Vs.11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Here's the Good News: you and I broke the law of God with our sinful lives, but Jesus paid the fine. That means if we repent of our sins [to forsake, to turn against, to cease] and we submit ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus, then we will be saved. It means that when we die,[we who are in Christ Jesus] then God will not see our wicked lives, but He will see Jesus who died on the cross, who atoned for our sins.

There is no sin too great for God to forgive. And you won't be alone in your walk with Christ if you surrender to Him. He will help you to love Him, He will never leave you or forsake you, He will make you into a beautiful new creation that will live and love good instead of evil.

So I’m having another… let’s call it an internet crisis. A thing that typically happens when I have Big Problems I can’t do fuck all about which means now it’s time to get Really Upset about problems that are comparatively small but do affect my daily routine (sorry again for no cut, I still can’t remember how to do it on mobile and I fucking hate hate hate the desktop post editor as much as someone can hate a piece of code)

It’s… getting harder to use tumblr. This isn’t about the sidebar, I don’t actually hate the sidebar cause we used to have a sidebar on the other side and I’ve missed it every since it left, but it’s about other things. A lot of things, but I won’t get into them all right now. For me, the new post editor is just. Really fucking difficult to use. If you’re just doing an unformatted, unplanned ramble (like this) or a little shitpost, it’s fine, especially if you’re on mobile (somehow the shitty mobile editor is now less shitty than the desktop editor, how tf did that happen), but if you’ve got multiple paragraphs and literally any formatting is needed? Well, you’re fucked, quite frankly, it is the most dense and convoluted post editor I’ve seen in like roughly 2 decades spent online. I’ve never seen anything more counterintuitive and difficult to use

And I’m sitting here with all these twitter posts I want to move. Some are little and would be easy. Others are a lot longer and more complicated and would shove me into that formatting hell I despise so much (and given how much feedback and unanswered asks to wip I’ve sent with no improvements, I’ve given up hope of it ever being made better). Like god I really, really want to save those posts but is it even worth it to do it here? But where else would I do it?

And the secondary layer too is… there’s no fucking posts here. No engagement on posts either most of the time. 90% of my posts come from my archive cause the kylux and Kylo (plus a few others I check less regularly) tags have very few daily posts and there’s hardly anything on my dash anymore. My original posts maybe get 10 notes on average, and these posts are ones that sometimes got near triple digit rts alone on twitter. Just seems there’s exceptionally few people here to enjoy them

And I’m still on twitter. It’s slowly dwindling but it’s still slightly more active than here. I’m on pillowfort and bsky too and they are truly dead (unless you’re a furry, good on the furries for populating every site in existence). There’s just. Nothing anymore. Maybe my fandoms are just dead but it feels like the meme about passing around the same $20 among friends cause capitalism is destroying us except with posts and likes

Idk. I feel like I don’t have an online home anymore. 90% of my socializing is online and 100% of my creativity is expressed through fandom and. I don’t know where to do that anymore. I have friends I chat with on discord and I love them but it’s… it’s not the same as a whole community, you know? And now that our homes are falling apart with every sign pointing towards imminent foreclosure like. What do I do. I know I’ve been through site losses before but. It feels different. Something new and shiny always came along before the end. I fear that’s not coming and we’ll all just be lost

Welcome to tumblr! Allow me to give you a little introductory guide, it can be a bit difficult to understand the site if you're used to ones like instagram, twitter and tiktok, its very different here!

Your dashboard (feed) is Not algorithm based like it is on other sites, you will only see the reblogs from the people you follow. On tumblr, you and the people you follow Are the algorithm, you control what you see on your dash! There are some algorithm based functions on here, though none of them are self-learning-AI based. The for you tab, unlike on tiktok, is not your main feed, the Following tab is. The for you tab is mostly posts from the blogs the people you follow reblog most from, as well as stuff from your explore page. So, the for you page isn't like tiktoks fyp. They're all based purely on what the people you follow are following, reblogging and liking, it's just allowing you some insight into their dashboards more or less!

The explore page, and all the other pages, won't infinitely update with new posts each time you refresh the page. If you look at your explore page now, and check back tomorrow, most of the same posts will still be there. Basically, tumblr isn't as fast paced as other apps, and won't cater to short attention spans like other apps will, which is great! It's good to slow down! If you want more action on your dash, follow more blogs!

You can find more blogs about topics you like using the search function of course, as with any social media site. The search function isnt the best, it's more or less impossible to find specific posts, but if its keyword or tag based searches you're good to go!

Liking posts does nothing for the creator of the post, likes dont equate anything, they have no "worth". Reblogging is what makes a difference on here, and it's the only thing that will let your followers see that post, though it seems you've understood this already, good job! Likes only serve a purpose in the "based on your likes" tab, which I haven't seen in a while, maybe its not a thing anymore, who knows! Other than that, likes are typically used by users for the sake of saving posts so you can find them later!

We generally dont add our own thoughts on posts as an addition on the post, we do that in the tags, so the person reblogging from you won't have to reblog your addition to the post as well. Sometimes we do add regular text to posts, but generally it's a bit frowned upon, you'll learn when and what to comment on, and when to use the tags! Don't think of the tags only as hashtags, the tags is your personal thought space, say whatever shit you want in there! all your completely irrelevant thoughts!

You can customise your desktop blog with different themes, if you go to raiaue.tumblr.com on desktop you'll get to the customisable desktop blog, have fun!

the queue! You can queue posts instead of reblogging them instantly, it's by no means necessary, but some people like to do it to keep their blogs active 24/7, but it really doesn't serve a purpose, it won't gain you more followers, but it will allow all your followers from different time zones to see you on their dash more consistently, but again, won't serve a purpose with follower count, which is something we really dont care about on tumblr, since we can't see other peoples follower counts! we're all equals on here, no verification checkmarks, no follower counts, lovely!

38. Which one of your OCs would be the best dancer?

Oh, Orpheus by far! He's spent 10 years as a professional dancer in his canon setting, and he always still dances in any au I put him in. And that was always the plan for him, right back to his earliest design concept—

^I almost never post my art so most of you have never seen this but here's my first ever drawing of one of my favourite boys! excuse how lq it is, this is just a screenshot, the original is on my old laptop, it was that long ago. He's evolved somewhat from this original concept, but he's very much still a dancer!

Orpheus is my water genasi bard OC from @literalpotatx's dnd campaign. Ash very graciously let me make him a dancer instead of a more traditional type of bard.

Orpheus joined a dance troupe when he was around 17 or 18, and within the next year or two they were invited to perform for the royalty of his home kingdom. He spent the next 10 years, basically the entirety of his 20s, as a dancer for the royal court of Pythos, so he's pretty good. I do have some unfinished art of him when he was first invited to the palace with the other dancers:

I flip flop on what styles of dance he'd like in a modern setting, I think he'd like the control that ballet requires you to have, but i could easily see him liking other styles as well. I keep coming back to these two videos (one, two) as possible dance inspiration for him in his canon setting! i think he'd strive to master a few different styles over time. sorry this got so long— my dancer oc is one of my favourites!

42. Which one of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek gods?

okay i really love this question, i can answer it in a few different ways,

1) if taken completely literally then, it's him again, my beloved Orpheus:

so. funny coincidence. my Orpheus is not the Orpheus of greek myth, I just personally love the myth of orpheus and eurydice and thought it would make a good name for a bard, even though my bard is a dancer. I named him that, and had him ready to go as a character the next chance I got to play someone new— so when I got invited to play in a new campaign, I decided to use Orpheus, and later found out this campaign would be incorporating Greek gods.

really funny to me how that happened. and the funniest part is that it happened AGAIN, another player in the same campaign decided to recycle her oc from years ago, named atlas, the next chance she got, and had decided to play as them before finding out this was a Greek gods campaign [doofenshmirtz "two nickels but weird that it happened twice" meme]

so, if i take "which oc would be most interested in greek gods" completely literally for their canon settings, the answer is Orpheus because those are the gods in charge of the world he lives in. funnily, if you'd asked this a few weeks ago i don't know if i could have said as much dkhgbdfkhb. yes, the Greek gods are real in the world he lives in, but. Orph didn't really care about them in more than a vague sense until Thanatos did him a favour last session dkghbdk. Thanatos isn't even the first god he's met, he's met Hermes and been in the vicinity of Artemis, he just wasn't that impressed before now i guess kdhfgbdk. to be fair, idk if he fully realised hermes was a god, and he didn't properly meet artemis. He's also met some? demi-gods I guess? it's complicated to explain, but I think one of them kind of did also put the fear of the gods into him a little bit so. he does care more now because of all that's happened. and i think that counts as being "most interested" out of all my ocs in their canon settings.

2) if taken in a. kind of literal but kind of meta way? it's complicated hold on.

if I had a nickel for every time a friend told me about their idea for a modern greek gods au, and let me come up with a concept for how my personal favourite god would fit into that setting, i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

but anyway, my favourite of the Greek gods is Thanatos, the god of death. i just really like psychopomps, and although he's nearly always present in some way or another, he's rarely actually mentioned, which basically makes him free real estate for this kind of thing.

(was I smug that orph had a really positive interaction with my favourite god so i could let my favouritism bleed into him? yes, thank you for asking!)

and i always say the same thing for him in a modern setting as a human, he'd be the hard working employee of a funeral home that Hades owns. his twin Hypnos works there too, mostly on reception but he helps his brother out when he's not sleeping on the job instead. back in like, 2018, a friend asked what i'd do with him and this is what i came up with, and i've stuck with it. (also a good excuse to bring up any knowledge i've retained from watching askamortician over the years).

also the part of my brain that wants me to go "i liked it before it was cool" is forcing me to say: i've never played that hades game. this is just from my own interpretation

i've been thinking about it recently because a different friend asked a few weeks ago, which prompted me to actually do designs for Thanatos (left) and Hypnos (right) in this setting.

so in a weird way i think this version of Thanatos who's basically an oc would count as "most interested in the greek gods" because basically every other character we worked into this setting that he'd be interacting with is another greek god, lmao.

3) but, if i take this the way i think the question actually intended, as in, in a modern setting, which of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek Mythology, then the answer changes again!

In that case the answer is probably my mc for the exile, Dimitra "Mimi" Vamirel, she really loves reading and I think she'd take a real interest in mythology in general in a modern setting! i'll add a picrew of her here too:

failed my web design course in college

BARELY passed it when i took it a second time

and it isn't so much that my design sense is bad (although i pretend it is with my maximalist and eclectic choices) as much as i couldn't figure out how get my code to WORK. it was very frustrating, because i'd design these elaborate pages and then when i'd go to code them, something always went wrong.

so i've maintained that i will NEVER work in web design. any sort of web design is something i do on my own time, for my own enjoyment. because the stress of getting something to work for a client? even if it was thru a builder like squarespace? horrifying.

anyway my most recent tumblr theme editing walls:

-how do i replace my sidebar with a sidebar that is unique to the desktop version only? which would allow me to format the text differently from my mobile theme.

-how do i hide my pinned post on my desktop theme because GOOD GOD is the formatting fucked up

-how do i move my pagination so it's in a more visible spot? (below my sidebar)

-how to i enable infinite scroll AND also keep the pagination so a person can choose whether they go page-by-page or do manual scroll?

when we create a gif we take a small part of the original video, put effects (emphasizing colors, putting more colors, tweaking lighting, brightness, and other settings), and then sharpening it, enhancing the strokes. this gives the gif a certain look. this look, however, doesn't hold depending on where you see the gif :(

i use photoshop. my gifs in photoshop are beautiful, shiny, my god what a beautiful thing… but then i put it in the tumblr desktop and it changes, the sharpness, the effect i put in photoshop look different on the desktop. even worse is on mobile, it looks like a completely different thing. people who work with editing don't know how others are seeing the gif, it looks different depending on where you're viewing it.

but in all seriousness, I did get a small slight panic attack because I was just overloaded with so much options.

It's way to cluster and uninviting. I now understand why new users don't like this overlay (I mean I don't like how it looks either but now I fully understand why new users don't like this). There is just way too much happening.

It's like Tumblr is trying to help by not actually helping.

Twitter is way to cluster with all their options. Many Twitter users pointed out how Twitter could lose their cluster option by either going down the Instagram desktop layout or Tumblr desktop layout.
