Just when I thought it was over, they pulled me back in! Some weeks back I was contacted by editors at @paolalanemag regarding my #Hanxtypewriter . They were pooling stories from recipients and were asking permission to add mine to their list for their next issue. I sent them some photos and some copy thinking I'd just be a face on the crowd and happy to be included (as I've been throughout this whole experience). Then I received a copy of the issue and I was absolutely shocked at just how much of my submission they used. Full disclosure: I had only heard faint rumblings of this publication prior to being contacted and had done some satisfactory research before agreeing to participate, however I was not fully prepared for what I received in the mail...
I am a 41 year old man and can remember the last "big stand" in the production of high quality magazines, and the subsequent fall from grace as the content became more accessible by being published online as the Internet took root in households worldwide. You saw thick, glossy magazines with great artwork and interesting articles backslide into Sunday circular advertising inserts printed on matte newsprint and containing more ads than actual content (I'm firing shots at you Rolling Stone).
So imagine my surprise when I opened the mailer to see a magazine who's overall quality seemed delived directly from the golden age of quality publication. The cover was thick and glossy like photos you just picked up from the 1 hour kiosk in the parking lot of your local shopping center. The inside was brimming with content written by and about makers tending the flames of their passion through their small businesses. I am thoroughly impressed by small production magazines like Paola Lane and @soupcanmagazine and urge everyone to dig deep and support these publications so that they can continue to raise the bar for what the arts can be!
Discovered a brilliant art creation site @nightcafestudio I was not expecting one of my first creations to be in Instagram colours, so I had to share!! #nightcafestudio #typewriter #typewriterart #insta2023 #instagram #typewritercollectors #art #AI #artistictypewriter #inspiration #typewriterrevolution #AIart #redbubble #artcommunity #art4sale #artist #aiartist #newart #likeplease #art4therapy #therapyart #therapyarts #recoveryart #recoveryartistnetwork (at England, UK) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoSzxwirpUU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Cleaning - Part 1: Carriage Rack & Ribbon Vibrator Assembly
Now that this assembly has been removed, I can work on cleaning it. Inspecting the underside of the carriage racks, there's a manufacturer's stamp/mark: "3. L. 16."
Could this be a date stamp? Using the Typewriter Database and the machine's factory number (589062), we can assume this machine was produced in 1916. Could the "16" reference the year? I'm wondering if all machines have the same or similar marking?
Before I began cleaning, there's two pieces I want to detach to clean separately. The Oliver 9 manual calls these "Swinging Links" and they support the rail frame on either end.
Similar to the Brackets, these pieces are specific to either the right or left. Note the "R" marked on the right link.
Now to clean the assembly...
Using PB B'laster Penetrant to remove the rust and corrosion.
After a good soak, I used a rag to wipe off about 90% of the rust and residue. There were a few rough surfaces that required a bit more work to remove.
Cleaning - Part 2: Parts & Fasteners
Now that the machine parts have been removed (see previous post), it's time to give them a good bath.
My workflow:
Add parts into a plastic bin with rust remover and mark the time on a sticky note with the part name. Sometimes only a two-hour soak would be enough while other parts required an overnight soak.
After rust remover soak, part is wiped down with a rag to wipe off any loose rust from all surfaces.
Quick rinse in water.
A dunk in 91% Isopropyl Alcohol for flash drying.
Dried parts are added back to their labeled bags or sleeves (see last post). It might be a while before I assemble this again so organization at every phase is important.
Here's a batch of parts in a container with a de-rust product. I used apple cider vinegar to start. I found that it worked well at cleaning after a good soak of at least 12 hours.
I switched to a different product that ended up working better and faster: Evapo-Rust. It's non-toxic, pH neutral, and reusable. A quart of this was able to clean everything.
Here's the first batch. Note how clean the liquid looks. After reuse, it will become a cloudy rusty liquid, but still works just the same.
I tried to keep tiny parts bathing in equally small containers as they can easily be lost, especially as the EvapoRust becomes cloudy. I also made sure to have a sieve in the sink for the cleaning process. Wouldn't want one of these to disappear down a pipe forever.
I used plastic trays, but in hindsight, I'd keep parts in even smaller containers of organized groups. Despite notes and photos, it took me much longer than anticipated to identify the small fasteners/screws at the end of the cleaning cycle.
The fasteners cleaned up so well, it was difficult to compare them to the photos I took at extraction, when they were covered in 105 years of rust and gunk.
Ok, that's it for now. Next post... Carriage Dismantle!
Believe it or not, this is progress. 2 days ago I could barely see the top of the work table. I hope to have the space 100% accessible by the end of the day. I have a lot of typewriters to work on for the Etsy shop. #typewriter #typewriterrevolution #typewriterlifechoseme #hermittime (at Middleton, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfl89xwrYn7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I wanted to share with you all some more clips from the Atop An Underwood reading I hosted at @phillytypewriter last Sunday. The reading far outpaced any expectations I held, with a full crowd, full of life and excitement for spoken word. In the first clip, I read excerpts from our own “original scroll”, a community poem that the audience was encouraged to add to on the typewriters. The next three clips are our featured readers @bkind_oguyo, @quinnxrodriguez, and @julian.ortman. They delivered such a positive expression of what the voices of our generation are all about. - Give them a follow to connect with more of their work - The remaining photos are from the open mic. Because a poetry reading can’t happen without the community there to give it voice. With the @typewriterrevolution manifesto as a backdrop, performers delivered poems about jazz, transformations, being bad, and good vibrations. It was a really special gathering of old souls and creative minds. I’m so grateful for everyone who braved the cold and joined us around the warmth of shared imagination. The event was built around a celebration of 100 years of Jack Kerouac, but it reflected so much more. Thanks so much again to Philly Typewriter for being such welcoming hosts and to all our readers who shared so much heart. We’ll have another reading coming up for ya with new features in the new year, so stay tuned! (at Philly Typewriter) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmiV1M9D6tG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
