well... it was overall a well-realized, visually stunning episode... but i was kinda bored the whole time :/ ... i think the reasons were that: a) the world of the town and clare didnt feel as "live in" or imainative as other ones we've seen in flux. and b) the lack of doctor o/ companion interactions set it down my stimations too. and c) it didnt really feel like a flux story? besides the little vignette with in space venice, it could have been inserted any other season. all that said, the last 3 minutes almosssst made up for all of that sdkljf

Both referred to as whores by their husbands

Both sexualized

Both used in men’s games (Emilia - trying to get the handkerchief for her husband, Desdemona - trying to get her husband to forgive Cassio)

Conclusion:

Desdemona - more privileged, subtle, submissive, innocent, respected; less vulgar, independent

Emilia - much less privileged, rarely taken into consideration, not really cared about, less subtle and sumbmissive, more vulgar, independent and with no boundries

These two women are so different, however, a friendship forms between them; they trust each other, they touch upon important life topics; Emilia gives her life for Desdemona

Their actions, their language and the way people treat them and refer to them is different due to their social status, as it is really important in the 16th century society; however, deep down, they have similar dilemmas, struggles, problems; they both struggle with how belittled they are in comparison to men

Social Class in Othello

Social structure pyramid:

Ruling elite: Duke, Brabantio, Gratiano

Wealthy and privileged: Montano, Ludovico, Desdemona

Higher middle class: Othello, Cassio, Roderigo

Working class/ lower middle class: Emillia, Iago

Least socially secure: Bianca, Clown, Musicians

Background information on social class:

In 16th century Venice, the army was very significant due to the many wars Venice was engaged in. The army was hired, and the generals and commanders automatically had high social status

A substantial share of Shakespeare’s audience was from the middle class, so Iago represented their fears, desires (rebelling against authority)

The Elizabethan society required for a woman to be married in order for society to ascribe her power.

Selected characters in the context of social class:

Othello- a christian Moor, general of the army, socially respected, has high authority, the Duke thinks of him highly, his status owes itself to his profession, people are aware of his bravery and power,(Othello:“Let him do his spite; My services which I have done the signiory Shall out-tongue his complaints.’Tis yet to know- Which, when I know that boasting is an honor, I shall [provulagte]- I fetch my life and being From men of royal siege, and my demerits May speak, unbonneted, to as proud a fortune As this that I have reach’d” Act I, scene 2, line 18)

Iago- from a low class,an ensign to Othello, however his role reverses when he dictates Roderigo around, desperately wants to climb the social ladder and replace Cassio as lieutenant (Iago:“Three great ones of the city, In personal suit to make me his lieutenant, Off-capp’d to him; and, by the faith of man, I know my price, I am worth no worse a place” Act I, scene 1, line 8)

Desdemona- daughter of a Venitian senator, is born and brought up in a wealthy and privileged household, her marriage to Othello is regarded as marrying below her class,is respected by people due to her social status and family lineage (Cassio: “O, behold, The riches of the ship is come on shore! You men of Cyprus, let her have your knees. Hail to thee lady! And the grace of heaven, Before, behind thee, and on every hand, Enwheel thee round!” Act II, scene 1, line 83)

Cassio- a lieutenant to Othello, holds a high position in the army, devoted to his work, profession is his identity in society, knows the importance of his reputation (Cassio: “Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation!” Act II, scene 3, line 262)

Emilia- a maid to Desdemona, her life devoted to service, is often blunt and unrefined, thus revealing her social class (Emilia: “A halter pardon him! And hell gnaw his bones! Why should he call her whore? (...) The Moor’s abus’d by some most villainous knave, Some base notorious knave, some scurvy fellow. O [heaven], that such companions thou’dst unfold, And to put in every honest hand whip To lash the rascals naked through the world Even from the east to th’ west!” Act IV, scene 2, line 136)

Bianca- a prostitute, very low social class, is not respected, frequently insulted, easily a target for accusations, has no social support and is not socially secure (Iago: “[to Bianca] O notable strumpet! Act V, scene 1, line 78) (Emilia: “O fie upon thee, strumpet!” Act V, scene 1, line 122)

Duke- has the highest authority in Venice, highly respected,a royal elite, has control over state’s matters, acts as a judge (Duke: “[to Othello What, in your part, can you say to this?” Act I, scene 3, line 74)

Gratiano, Brabantio, Montano, Lodovico- noblemen, high status in society, affluent and reputed

The 3 classes of women:

Desdemona => Othello’s brutality towards her instills a sense of shock and resentment in the other characters, most likely due to her wealthy background, which is generally associated with nobility and politeness, not physical violence.

Emilia => Iago’s obvious disrespect and mockery directed at her is met with no outrage, as though using insulting and degrading language is expected of people belonging to the lower class of Elizabethan society.

Bianca => Bianca’s job as prostitute (which does not match the conventional behaviour of women in the play) results in her ostracization. Women were only ascribed power by society if they were married, thus throughout the play Bianca is treated in disrespectful and disregarding, especially by Cassio, her lover, who speaks to her with contempt and disdain, which is the polar opposite to the way he addressed Desdemona. Bianca is blinded by her affection towards him and so for the most part, is submissive. Cassio’s clear disdain for Bianca can be seen in Act IV, Scene 1, when he says ‘How now, my sweet Bianca! How now! How now!’. Due to her low status, she is an easy victim of accusation with no one to defend her or stand by her side.

Language as a reflection of social class:

This can be clearly seen in Act IV seen one - the dialogue between Emilia and Desdemona.

Desdemona - wealthy and privileged

-She is represented as being almost overwhelmingly innocent and naive, seemingly unaware of society’s corruptness.

‘Heaven pardon him!’

-She is afraid to us rough language that might undermine her reputation.

‘I cannot say whore: it does abhor me now I speak the word.’

-She has a vision of sacred marriage, prioritizing love and loyalty over material possessions.

‘And his unkindness may defeat my life, but never taint my love.’

Emilia - working class/lower middle class

She is represented as very down-to-earth and pragmatic, and one who has experienced the highs and lows of life.

‘I will be hanged if some eternal villain, some busy and insinuating rogue, some cogging, cozening slave, to get some office, have not devised this slander, I’ll be hanged else!’

She isn’t afraid of using, what is regarded, as rough or vulgar language.

‘To be called whore? would it not make one weep?’

She is sexually liberated, unafraid of voicing her opinions on the behaviour of the opposite sex.

‘A halter pardon him, and hell gnaw his bones!’

The idea of achieved vs ascribed power:

Prosperity in Elizabethan society was largely based on the notion of ascribed power, i.e. blood and birth with very limited opportunities for advancement, especially for people belonging to the working class. One could deduce that the characters who were ascribed power from birth are: Brabantio, Gratiano, Desdemona and Ludovico, among others.

However, power could also, in some cases, be self-obtained through personal ‘achievements’, as seen by the example of Othello who grew up in a poor family and climbed up the social ladder, as a result of his military excellence. Another example a character with achieved power is Iago, who’s manipulative skills allow him to lure characters of higher social status into his trap, such as Roderigo, Cassio (whom he replaces), and the admired general, Othello whom he has wrapped around his little finger. Social class is not an obstacle for Iago.
