The choice to put Una Chin-Reily on a Starfleet recruitment poster in the late 2370s seems a nod to the extraordinary person she is and her exemplary service, but Boimler’s enthusiasm for her as a personal hero cannot mask the fact of what Starfleet execs are really doing here: while it is Starfleet tradition to honour esteemed personnel from its centuries of history, we have to look at the poster as a product of its time: it seems clear that, shortly after the devastating death toll and the rapid militarisation of the Dominion War, putting a prominent figure of the Great Exploration Age - and notedly someone who had not served in the Klingon War - as the poster person for Starfleet is an indictment that contemporary young people of the Federation are not drawn to the service as it is in their time anymore.
Critically, Starfleet has to use somebody from a 120 years ago, a timeframe that would lap generations of even especially long lived member species like Vulcans or Denobulans, to attract new recruits.
Boimler says himself that seeing Una as a representative and her motto - “Ad astra per aspera” was: “Uh, it was a really big reason why I joined.” Clearly there is a wealth of recognisable Starfleet officers from 2370 and onwards, but their entanglement in the Dominion War, or at least in the Borg threat makes them unsuitable as role models for people like Boimler who cannot help but associate these contemporaries with the horrors of war and intergalactic conflict.
Thus, the retreat to a “safe” historical narrative, with Starfleet still being about peaceful exploration reflects the growing divide between the realities of a colonised galaxy, the ongoing need of new bodies to fill the posts on all those ships and space stations and the aspirations and values of young people today. In this essay I will question whether Starfleet can keep its promise of scientific integrity in the face of growing political unrest in the UFP and ask what “Number One” herself would have thought about-
Haters fail to grasp that Taylor’s massive success isn’t due to any trends , it’s largely based on her relationship with US. If you don’t understand the lore of pen genres she’s not for you
to the f1 community i can reach out to, we all can collectively agree williams has screwed over logan (intentionally or unintentionally). so can we all, by the power of unity, vote for logan as driver of the day for the gp? because he's had it rough for so long, I'd kill to see him happy.
The Florida Republican legislator who praised Javier Milei and then praised Argentina with the straight up nazi thinking of "one race, one culture, one religion", which is not only Nazi propaganda but a complete and absolute lie, really puts into perspective the whole "ARGENTINA IS WHITE XDXDXDXDDX" memes anglos have been spreading uncritically like it's just a funny joke. It's not an insult, it's an ASPIRATION for them. They WANT to be the Nazi Argentina which only exists in their heads and memes.
They had so much fun calling us nazis and there you have it, straight up white supremacists in their politics praising and supporting our far right, which has also been funded by US "think-tanks" such as the Atlas Network. THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE, YANQUI. YOUR COUNTRY IS THE ONE FULL OF NAZIS, YOU HAVE THEM IN YOUR GOVERMENT, IN YOUR POLICE, IN YOUR MILITARY.
I've been seeing so much zolu/zosan hate between the shipping communities lately and I think we just all need to agree that each of those men would happily drink the sweat from each others balls and that's it
it's wild to see people say stuff like "sansa is a politician, arya is a warrior" while not being able to point out a single political act sansa has achieved, and not being able point out any of arya's "warrior skills" that isn't the handful of fencing lessons with syrio she received for like five months max lol
Politician!Sansa and Warrior!Arya are two fascinating ends of a fanon ouroboros; Neither concept exists outside of the other and neither concepts are based on the books. This fandom is just so attached to the idea of Sansa being this incredible politician, with intelligence above every other character, that her having nothing in her own chapters to support that idea doesn't stop them. That's why Arya's intelligence, skills, and entire character arc get reduced to her being nothing but a walking, talking weapon. Like you said, her "warrior" capabilities are essentially the handful of lessons she had with Syrio where her most important + relevant lesson was how to observe her surroundings. Her only "combat" training with the FM was her defending herself with a staff when she lost her eyesight. There's nothing to suggest that she's going to be a warrior, in fact we get the exact opposite. We get constant reminders of Arya's small stature and lack of strength that prevent her from fighting/defending herself in certain situations. All her kills rely on sneak attacks/stealth and she's never been in an outright swordfight with anyone. George even refrains from calling her a warrior like Robb and Jon. Brienne and Asha are examples of female characters who are actual fighters and if you compare their chapters, you can see the difference.
But then Arya's entire existence is antithetical to fanon!Sansa's. Her Harrenhal arc is what people pretend Sansa was doing in KL, her relevance to the North gets transferred to Sansa, and her intelligence and political activeness are erased so that Sansa can shine. They'll write essays on how Sansa is the most intelligent, politically savvy character and how Dany/Jon/Tyrion's arcs only exist to highlight her own ruling arc but the second someone asks them for evidence from the books, it's crickets. I don't understand why their enjoyment of her character hinges on her being the most important/intelligent one. No Arya stan is under the illusion that she's going to be the political character or outclass Dany, Jon, or Tyrion. It's just part of her story so we acknowledge it. Arya is going to have her political arc in Braavos and Sansa is going to have her political arc in the Vale, they aren't mutually exclusive. The only issue is that some people want Sansa to be the only one with a political arc and that's not the story that George is telling.
people really need to stop asking stupid questions to logan and making stupid comments about him. because if i hear another 'heyyy, what's your fav food???' or 'do you know what kilometer is??? 🤨🤨🤨' type of questions, i will commit a crime.
also, i just wanted to say that you really did god's work... thank you for letting him know that he's loved and supported no matter what happens. i was really happy to see that someone was actually asking real questions and telling him nice stuff 🥹🫶🏼
To be honest, when I was in the room the atmosphere was really awkward. The host kept momentarily struggling to even find someone to ask a question, plus Logan kept downing himself and comparing his failure to Oscar’s success, it was breaking my heart. He honestly looked really sad, and I’m glad I got brave enough to speak up! He seemed very anxious and a bit shy, and with the way the season is going for him + the way he’s mostly just seen as a meme, he deserved to be reminded that he is a person and deserves to be where he is as much as anyone else.
He seemed really happy after I spoke to him. I even noticed that he gave the bracelets I made him to Benny, and Benny is wearing ALL of them this weekend. How sweet 🥹 I really wish the best for Logan. He seems very intelligent and sweet, and I know he’ll find his way whether it’s in F1 or somewhere else.
But yes, you’re right! He needs more people to voice their support. Just look at how happy and energetic he was today after the little bit of love I sent him from all of us!!! I’ve never seen him so full of life and act so silly before!!!
Little bits of kindness go a long way!! Don’t forget that (for Logan and for every aspect of life)! 💙
"When [Aleida] opens the door [to Margo's office after the JSC bombing], I think the immediate fear is, "Margo died, and I never got to tell her that I love her." There's shock there, so she isn't thinking straight, but I think that's what it is — that she's been arguing and fighting with this person, and at the end of the day, she just wants to tell her that she loves her."
