TTEOTM Creative Team: What else did they work on?

For those who are a bit underwhelmed by the summer drama options or still dreaming about TTEOTM! 😎

Kuk Kok Leung (Lead Director)

Kuk Kok Leung is a veteran director who started his career in Hong Kong's TVB. He's been nominated for the prestigious Magnolia Award and is known for wuxia and serious, warm-blooded historical dramas (he's adapted 7 out of 8 Jinyong novels). His works include...

He's also a frequent collaborator and producer on Johnny To films, including Election, Election 2, Mad Detective.

So you get the picture. He makes TV for men who are ready to bleed for their country. This all makes him a really interesting choice for TTEOTM (and tells you a bit about the ambition and creative vision of the producers), especially since all his more recent idol dramas were widely panned.

Wang Haiqi, Director & Action Director

We don't know too much about Wang Haiqi because TTEOTM is actually his directorial debut. He started his career in stunts and has worked as the action coordinator on Ashes of Love (2018) and Immortality (unreleased) alongside Luo Yunxi. He was also a stunts man/double in a bunch of Hollywood films, including Mulan (2020) and the Foreigner (2017) through the Jacky Chan stunts team.

He's responsible for most of the action/battle scenes in TTEOTM, and his experience working on films probably explains why the fight sequences are unusually cinematic for TV.

Luan Hexin, Art Director

Luan Hexin is a Magnolia Award nominated art director best known for Huanyu productions, including Story of Yanxi Palace, Winter Begonia, and Royal Feast. He's a serious art guy, as you can tell from this interview.

(Note: Huanyu is Bai Lu's management company. There is a rumor that Luan Hexin is part of Bai Lu's "dowry", but the parties have since clarified that Luan was brought in after she was cast.)

He's also an interesting choice, having never worked on costume fantasies before and better known for his authentic representation of the look and feel of bygone eras.

Huang Wei, Costume Designer

Huang Wei is one of the most sought-after costume designers working today, especially for xianxias. She started her career as a Vogue China editor and was in fact the person responsible for TTEOTM's Dunhuang-inspired aesthetics.

Her better known works include A Dream of Splendor (2022), One and Only (2020), Love O2O (2015), Back from the Brink (2023) as well as a bunch of highly anticipated dramas like Immortality and The Last Immortal. (The joke on Chinese internet is that there is an "expensive" vs. "cheap" version of Huang Wei costumes - her design can be much simpler on lower-budget productions.)

I'd like to think that after designing 40 mostly white costumes for Luo Yunxi in Immortality, she decided to go nuts on color with Tantai Jin.

Tsang Ming Fai, Makeup Designer

Tsang Ming Fai is a big name in the xianxia circuit. He and his team of “students" have worked on a large number of costume dramas, including Ashes of Love (2018), Love & Redemption (2020), Under the Power (2019), Noble Aspirations (2016), Sword of Legends (2014), as well as the... wait for it... unreleased Immortality and Luo Yunxi's currently filming drama Follow Your Heart.

He's sadly been receiving a lot of hate in fan circles over the heavy makeup in TTEOTM (which may or may not have been his call). What I do appreciate is his ability to help actors craft distinct characters with varied hair and makeup choices. For example you can distinguish between different Luo Yunxi characters and their personalities with Runyu's clean cut tie-back half ponytail (ethereal & straight laced), Tantai Jin's slightly brown hair, messy bangs and heavy eye shadow (dark & sickly), Chu Wanning's angular eyebrows and geometric hair puff (strict & proud).

He also excels at creating unusual, iconic looks even for side characters, e.g. Chen Yao's dark lipstick paired with gothic jewelry in Immortality and Chen Duling's retro updo in TTEOTM.

Anyways I saw this new merch art at like 5am and my brain exploded and I wrote the start of a half sleepy one shot so here

...extremely indulgent hybrid bunny witches wangxian childhood friends AU

EDIT: Now a one-shot

All witches are born with a hybrid form that they must learn to control by ten. At that time, they will be given their witch's name and join the coven officially as a fully fledged witch.

But Lan Zhan is nine and a half, and he still can't control his ears and his hybrid form...

They're big and unseemingly, embarrassing the way his Ge cam pull and tug on them. And every time he coos and calls him cuts, Lan Zhan puffs up with anger.

Rabbits aren't common hybrids, and he's the only one in the family. Ge learned to control his form at 7, why is he late?

He resolves to spend much of his time practicing on his own in the field behind thier home. He goes through all the meditation and steps, including envisioning the way his human ears might look.

He casts the spell, following the instructions perfectly...but nothing happens. Water wells up in his eyes and it takes all of him to hold them back from falling

Not with sadness, but with frustration. Lan Zhan is at the top of everything! The best in his class, an accomplished musician, and can performing spells his older peers can't even dream of.

But this spell... why is it that this spell is so impossible for him?

His ears droop down and Lan Zhan uses then to block the rest of the world, focusing on the ground he's sitting on. He starts ripping up the grass at his feet.

A voice calls from just a few feet away, "Hey! Don't do that, you're hurting it!"

Lan Zhan's head shoots up in surprise. No one is allowed on the back hills. Who is this intruder?

And there standing before him is another boy around his age, with fluffy black bunny ears and a smile brighter than the sun overhead lending him a halo effect, so dazzling Lan Zhan has to squint his eyes just to see him properly.

Lan Zhan has never met another rabbit before. He's not sure what to do, what's the proper etiquette?

It doesn't help that this other boy is very distracting as he runs right to him and plops down in front of him and starts patting the ground gently, consoling the grass.

"Poor little grasslings, is this mean gege hurting you?" The boy pouts but there's a teasing glint in his eyes when he glances at Lan Zhan.

Is he making fun of him?

Lan Zhan feels the blood rush to his own bunny ears and knows they're looking terribly pink, but he can't help it.

How dare this boy make a fool of him! He's just here trying to get his ears under control so he can't make his family proud, and the boy comes over to mock him!

Lan Zhan feels his lip quiver, and to his horror a tear falls from his eyes into his lap, followed by another.

He's crying in earnest now. It's been years since he cried in front of someone else and he's so shocked by it he can't get the tears to stop falling!

The boy looks at him wide-eyed with the same surprise, clearly agreeing that Lan Zhan is just a loser who is just a failure.

Until the boy finally speaks, "Whoa, whoa, it's okay." His voice is soft and gentle. "This Wei Ying only meant it as a joke. The grasslings don't mind, really, they'll grow back. You don't need to cry."

Lan Zhan huffs, unsure of how to say it's not the grass he's crying for.

Lan Zhan watches his hands as he twists them. His bunny ears droop, brushing against the side of his head as he sniffles.

But although this Wei Ying couldn't understand, he still leans forward so he can peer up at him. His dark eyes shine like the magical sparkles his mama used to cast before bedtime. Her own little stars, she'd call them.

One of Lan Zhan's tears catch in the boy's ears, clinging tight to the fur. But Wei Yung doesn't seem to mind.

Instead he hums contemplatively, before he bounces up to his feet and declares, "I know! I'll show you a spell! But you gotta keep it a secret, okay? No one knows it."

Lan Zhan can't stop himself from scoffing. Is this boy saying he invented a spell? This young?

Impossible. Shameless.

Wei Ying takes his skepticism in stride and grins down at Lan Zhan. "Just you wait, you're gonna love this."

Then he steps back, clasping his hands together and shutting his eyes tight, a furrow deepening between his brows.

He starts humming, quietly like he's trying not to disturb anything. It's not a tune Lan Zhan is familiar with, but lots of spells have songs. The problem is that when they backfire they can often create quite the mess.

Lan Zhan leans back slightly, his tears forgotten. He's somewhat wary this is all going to turn very bad, but he can't look away. He finds he has no desire to look away from this boy at all.

Then, to Lan Zhan's shock, a glowing circle appears around the boy. They're not scheduled to learn how to make arrays until they turn 13, but Wei Ying can make one already?

Wei Ying’s hair lifts by some unseen force as his ears stand straight up. His humming grows louder as Lan Zhan’s eyes grow wider.

Then, all at once Wei Ying stops humming and the circle disappears.

Wei Ying beams. "So! What do you think? Neat, huh!"

Lan Zhan blinks up at him. Nothing has changed, is this another trick?

Wei Ying gives him a confident crooked grin. "Look down, you'll see."

Lan Zhan looks at the ground in front of him and gasps.

Where before laid the remains of grass tearing is a patch of brand new bright green grass, growing proud and strong.

This...is creating life. This isn't something a regular witch can do. Most accomplished ones can't! Let alone a boy.

Ep 4 and Lan Zhan just got kneewalking drunk off of one cup, has a nightmare about Wei Yung dying, jolts him awake to panic search for his honey bc he is not by his side

Finds Wei Ying with Wen Ning and FRIKKIN SHOVES zombie guy away from WY like some jealous possessive boyfriend

THEN proceeds to decide naw that ain't enough. Zombie guy was out here trying to steal his man IMMA BITCHSLAP A CORPSE BITCH

Wei Ying has to physically hold LZ back and yell at Wen Ning to run away. THEN DRUNK LZ tries showering Wei Ying with courting gifts (that he pulls out from his sleeves) bc "Baby, baby, you like me better than him, right, baby?"

Calamity of Snakes will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 11 via Unearthed Films. The 1982 Taiwanese/Hong Kong exploitation film is also known as The Serpent Warriors.

Chi Chang directs from a script he co-wrote with Kang-Nien Li and Kuo Jung Tsai (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Yun-Peng Hsiang, Yuen Kao, and Ping-Ou Wei star.

Warrior Season One Highlights

Jonathan Tropper’s TV show Warrior, which premiered on Cinemax in 2019, brings to life a failed pitch Bruce Lee made for a series dramatizing San Francisco’s Tong Wars. Executive-produced by Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, among others, the action-packed serial centers around the exploits of Ah Sahm (Japanese-British Andrew Koji), a Chinese immigrant who becomes a hatchet man for the Tong known as “Hop Wei”. Warrior seems to have earned a modest cult following, especially after HBO Max posted the first two seasons. After I finish each one, I’ll review my favorite episode from each Asian-American director. Among this season’s five directors, two possess Asian heritage, who in total directed three of the 10 episodes.

The Blood and the Sh*t

Airdate: May 3, 2019 (#5)

"Transporting precious cargo via stagecoach through the Sierra Nevada, Ah Sahm and Young Jun (Jason Tobin) are forced to spend the night with three strangers at a frontier saloon in the middle of nowhere. The detour turns perilous when Harlan French (Christiaan Schoombie), a notorious outlaw, shows up with his henchmen, looking for a lucrative payday."

Sending Ah Sahm and Young Jun out of San Francisco for this episode serves the dual purpose of refreshingly changing Season One's pace halfway through, and fleshing out their friendship. Despite the shift to a less urban setting, the episode maintains thematic consistency with the rest of Warrior, through its cynical depiction of anti-Chinese discrimination. With a cast of Asian, Caucasian, and indigenous actors depicting a time of high racial disparity, the template of intimidating strangers winning over skeptics under their protection gains a poignant new layer; although I haven't seen the script's inspiration, The Hateful Eight. Considering the influence of Japanese cinema on Western movies, it almost feels poetic to find an Old West tale boasting a Japanese lead actor. Even though not all of this show's Caucasian characters hate Chinese people, the line between "good white person" and "bad white person" blurs when Harlan quickly shifts from saving Young Jun from castration by Mason (Craig Urbani), to attempting to rob Ah Sahm's and Young Jun's party.

Impulsive Young Jun, long-time Hop Wei member, provides a fascinating contrast to solemn newcomer Ah Sahm, with whom he does share an engaging camaraderie. Young Jun's status as a second-generation immigrant justifies his cynicism, when he laments that his disconnect from his the culture of his father - Hop Wei leader Father Jun (Perry Yung) - makes him feel as out of place among other Chinese people as among Caucasians. Ah Sahm's and Young Jun's varying degrees of familiarity with America even come through during the "anything goes"-style fight scenes, which prove as brutal and engaging as I can expect from Thai-American Kevin Tancharoen. Young Jun mostly fights with weapons, as do other characters assimilated into or born in America. In juxtaposition, Ah Sahm relies on his former home's hand-to-hand combat techniques, yielding additional gruesome results.

Bartender Lu (CS Lee) contributes a distinct Chinese-American perspective on the late 19th century. As a manual laborer who eventually opened up his own business, he makes money through more honest means than Tong members do. However, his backstory teaches that the majority of Caucasians would only respect people of other ethnicities for their own benefit - and even then, not to the extent of paying Lu fairly for his labor. Judging by his statement of rarely receiving Chinese patrons, his current entrepreneurial position still amounts to serving white people for money. Lu does prove that systemic discrimination hasn't rendered him submissive, such as when he and his wife Billie (Erica Wessels) both help protect the bar from the bandits.

Lu's blissful marriage to Billie delivers a necessary depiction of a functional interracial romance. The episode before this one sees Penelope "Penny" Blake (Joanna Vanderham) begin to cheat on Samuel Blake (Christian McKay), the mayor of San Francisco, with Ah Sahm, as reward for saving her life in the second episode. With Lu and Billie, Warrior gains a relatively less sinful example of love transcending racial boundaries.

Young Jun's own love interest in this episode, Native American prostitute Wankeia (Rachel Colwell), likely wouldn't present the most empowering depiction of an indigenous woman; her silence and profession reflecting the Old West's limited education and career opportunities for women of color. On the positive side, Jason Tobin sells the plainly stated notion of Young Jun finding a kindred spirit in another societal outcast, as opposed to simply adoring Wankeia for her physical beauty. During the climax, she also defies the impression that Native Americans in Westerns need non-indigenous people to protect them from selfish Caucasians.

The closest thing I could find to a flaw with this story concerns Harlan's motivations for the second attack on Lu's bar. It doesn't seem like the episode ever explains how he knows exactly what type of "precious cargo" Ah Sahm and Young Jun must transport back to Father Jun. The Western tone and aesthetic convinced me to overlook this, and just enjoy the adventure as an old-fashioned thrill dashed with social commentary. Given the high quality of the performances and set pieces, I can excuse the contrived writing of a one-off baddie. "The Blood and the Sh*t" adds an exciting buffer to Warrior Season One's midpoint, while reinforcing the importance of companionship in a ruthless society.

They Don't Pay Us Enough To Think

Airdate: May 24, 2019 (#8)

Writers: Evan Endicott & Josh Stoddard

"After a bloodbath on the streets of Chinatown, the Hop Wei and Long Zii consider a novel way to end hostilities. Ah Toy (Olivia Cheng) and her real-estate business partner, Leonard Patterson (Frank Rautenbach), hit a fork in the road in their effort to buy a valuable piece of land. After promising jobs to Dylan Leary (Dean Jagger)'s Irish workers, Byron Mercer (Graham Hopkins) toasts senator Robert Crestwood (Patrick Baladi) at a fundraiser, while Penny struggles to hold her tongue. Mai Ling (Vietnamese/Chinese-Canadian Dianne Doan) warns her brother, Ah Sahm, against waging a battle he may not win."

The more plot-relevant of the two Warrior episodes discussed here demonstrates the series' captivating exploration of San Francisco's 1870s pecking order. The various ongoing plot lines divide our attention between Chinatown's Tongs and prostitutes, working-class white denizens/citizens, and politically-powerful white citizens. Each of San Francisco's social classes contains people who survive through unscrupulous business, but the Tongs and prostitutes earn the viewers' sympathy as people making the most of desperate situations. When considering the period's patriarchal atmosphere, it feels even more intriguing to see the ruthless lengths that vigilant brothel owner Ah Toy and Long Zii's ladder-climbing Mai Ling will take to accumulate and exert power.

Throughout Season One, most of the Asian actors emphasize their characters' isolation by speaking fluent English among each other, but switching to broken English when addressing Caucasians. When the latter group hears Chinese characters' personal conversations in Chinese, the spoken translations for the audience become reminders of the importance of understanding marginalized perspectives on society. Due to Ah Sahm inheriting some American lineage from his grandfather, Andrew Koji and his writers emphasize Ah Sahm's isolation without resorting to broken English. While he does demonstrate the ability to converse intelligibly with Caucasians, he usually prefers to say nothing at all to them.

Despite Ah Sahm's tendency to disappear for long stretches of this episode, he remains an engaging protagonist. His devotion to the Hop Wei requires him to unquestionably follow orders from Father Jun, yet he still seems in control of his direction in San Francisco. His agreement to duel Long Zii lieutenant Li Yong (Chinese-Indonesian Joe Taslim) comes off at this point as an attempt to ensure himself that despite Mai Ling's rejection in the first episode of his offer to bring her back to China, and Penny's termination in this episode of their affair, he still has purpose in America. He goes so far as to disregard advice to drop out of the life-risking duel, knowing that a loss could both weaken the Hop Wei's hold on the drug trade, and embarrass himself. Through Ah Sahm, Koji and the creatives tackle the task of presenting a protagonist as both dutiful, and proactive.

This episode draws its title from a quote by Bill O'Hara (Kieran Bew), an Irish-American cop assigned with lessening crime in Chinatown. Warrior's attempts to endear him to viewers usually prove ineffective to me; in this particular story, any admiration I would've given him for refusing to support political supporters of the Chinese Exclusion Act feels canceled out by his own act of brutality later on. I have noticed the irony of the oppressed becoming the oppressors, but his plotlines more often than not leave me anxious to resume focus on characters enduring a larger degree of discrimination.

A mixed martial artist and stuntman, Lin Oeding helped provide this episode with thrilling and visually stimulating fight scenes. The opening battle between the Hop Wei and the Long Zii begins this episode in chaotic fashion, as a countless number of gangsters engage in fascinatingly choreographed killings. A later brawl between Ah Sahm and some masked opponents impresses on a more intimate level; between the focus on Ah Sahm's need to survive the unexpected obstacle, and the long takes showing off everyone's skills. Across all of the fight scenes, the total amount of onscreen blood seems to reach a tolerable level: Neither unnaturally low, nor nauseatingly high. The goriest sights of both of these episodes go by very quickly.

Caucasians who engage in systemic racism boast understandable motivations, such as maintaining peace and creating jobs. However, the show doesn't ask the viewers to forgive their bigotry. In this episode, it becomes especially explicit when Penny objects the Chinese Exclusion Act, by attempting to point out hypocrisy of white men banning immigrants from a country that didn't originally belong to them. While this opinion doesn't gain much traction in her patriarchal social circle, her lingering empathy for Ah Sahm helps her to nonviolently demonstrate resilience and a headstrong attitude. Overall, "They Don't Pay Us Enough to Think" successfully provides several compelling perspectives of San Francisco on the brink of the Tong Wars.

5. If you could make only one of your OCs popular/known, who would it be?

Nuo, I think. I really tried to get into the whole Autistic as a Woman thing with her which I think is criminally underrepresented pretty much everywhere. Also, Nuo is a boss bitch. And I love her.

22. Is there any OC of yours people tend to mischaracterize? If yes, how?

Huh. I don’t know? I don’t think so. I mean don’t get me wrong, readers are going to put their own spin on characters depending on their own life experiences and that’s something I both expect and appreciate, so. Hmmm. I guess the closest maybe would be Yumi, who I think some readers think is this very strict, humorless disciplinarian. Certainly she takes her work seriously and she keeps a short leash on Naoki because she understands, like Mako, what Naoki really is. But she’s actually a pretty chill person.

23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like?

Sitiak, who was just supposed to show up for one scene, look hot and give massages. And then what happened? YOU HAPPENED WITH YOUR BOO HOO NO ONE TO SHIP WEI WITH and here we are.

30. Which one of your OCs would most likely have a secret stuffed animal collection?

Sozui. For sure. He’s very tender and loyal and extremely sentimental underneath all those Fire Nation robes.

49. Which one of your OCs would most likely enjoy memes.

Bora would think memes were a fucking scream. And she would share them. The only other people, however, who would think they were a fucking scream would be Yung and Huan. Everyone else would be like, MAKE HER STOP.
