what made you choose a deer for your fursona?

It's a long story that I am all too happy to tell!

I first attended Midwest Furfest in 2018, after years of being curious about it. My boyfriend at the time was a member of the Neo-Futurists Theater, and the Neo's had a longstanding relationship with the MFF community. They perform their flagship show (Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, later rebranded as The Infinite Whale) there every year, and when the theater company's former founder attempted to steal their show name/copyright following his ousting due to sexual assault allegations, MFF really came through to offer considerable moral support.

There was lots of goodhearted joking about the furry community within that theater space, and I'd always been curious about furries and a supporter of them in heart if not in fact, and so I finally decided one year to tag along, see my boyfriend performing there, and walk around the convention floor and visit the dealer's den during my down time.

I absolutely LOVED IT. I was completely blown away by the artistry of the suits and the playful spirit of the suiters. I ran into a few friends there, outing them as furries to me, and we grew closer. I also took notice of some teal, sparkly resin antlers while I was in the Dealer's Den:

I snapped those things up and put them on immediately. Some stranger started to pet me right away (which is technically a convention consent violation, and should *not* be done, but I personally was the opposite of troubled by being treated in this way) and I was hooked.

I had always had a "thing" for antlers and horns since playing the PS2 game Ico back in the early 2000's. The young male protagonists horns representing an unwanted appendage and a visible "curse" was very appealing to me... as a boy who had been saddled with two very unwanted appendages of my own. (trangsender). I also have had many very magical encounters with deer in Ohio and Pennsylvania where I grew up. As a skiddish bottomy freak whose caused a lot of car accidents, a prey animal that also has the power to kill people in vehicles seemed plenty apt. So when I found some antlers to wear, it seemed like a natural enough fit for a potential fursona.

Then my friend @jettvector designed my fursona, using the teal antlers as a jumping off point. (this art has his old watermark on it, but he goes by jettvector now. commission him!):

Now that I had a friend-assigned fursona and was officially a furry, I ran with it, and began commissioning some art that further refined my image of the character:

A few things that I love about my sona's design: I love that his ears are big and really stick out, as my ears do the same, I love that he has a spot reflecting my monroe piercing, I love that deers are spotted in general, which can allow me to recast my own bacne scars in a more positive light, and i love that his greenish teal skin reflects my own olive complection (which I used to get a lot of weird comments about as a kid and felt self conscious about).

I also accumulated some gear in the meantime that allowed me to better embody my deersona, who I now call DD (which stands for Deer Devon, Docile Deer, Devon Dawn, my former DD tits, or any numer of potential things haha)

Hard to kill

Uh-- name's Fennec. Probably. I mean, it's the one I'm using right now, you know? Sorry, sorry, it's just-- it's weird, okay? You know how it is. There's the deadname, the name I tried out for a while but it didn't click, the name for friends only, the online name, the fursona--

Fennec Mortimer is fine. Well. Anyways. Today's....friday, I think? Yeah. Statement begins?

So, I guess I've always been kind of an adrenaline junkie. As a kid, I was always that weird little girl who hung out with the boys and climbed trees, but I went faster and higher than any of them. Hated skirts, not 'cause they were girly but because they were impractical, same with hair long enough to grab.

When Plasma was active, I was almost old enough to go on a journey, in my mind, but I wasn't allowed to, because, you know. Moms have this gossip grapevine, and she'd heard that a friend of hers had a daughter whose pokemon had been stolen by Plasma. They got it back, in the end, and the girl ended up settling down as a lab assistant, but the point is...well. My ten year old brain was convinced that if I just harassed enough grunts with flaming pinecone molotovs, they would all explode into sparkles and I'd suddenly be allowed to go on my journey.

I think mom was hoping that me coming out as a boy would make me calm down. She walked me through all the legal and medical stuff, got me a haircut and dye, even called Dad back from his work in Kanto so we could have some proper father-son bonding. And it was great, don't get me wrong! It just... I dunno. Didn't satisfy that urge.

Neither did my journey, really. I just... gods, how do I even explain it? It felt like there was something missing. I couldn't explain this gaping hole in my life, for something I didn't know the words for. I needed more, and I needed it constantly, and I was always vibrating with this...need.

Anyways. I got into urban exploration after a lot of wandering places I shouldn't have been, and I think mom was relieved. She got into it too-- got me a proper dust mask to filter out stuff, a sturdy pair of boots, and a first aid kit. When my friend Sol suggested we start a poketube and record ourselves, I'm pretty sure my mom slipped some money to them out of sheer relief. It meant we'd be going safe places, taking video, and she'd have some semblance of an idea where I'd been.

Well. Our first video was the old Plasma castle, see. I'd fucked around in the Unova underground enough to find an entrance, and it seemed stable enough, so we were getting to a part that was off limits to the public. Dist, it might not have been a place that anyone had seen for ages! So yeah, we were excited to go down there. Maybe mom didn't know about the whole secret base we'd set up underground, but she'd be happy that I was getting out and doing something marginally less stupid than usual.

I didn't wear the mask. I know, I know, stupid, but listen-- gender euphoria is a hell of a drug, and I'd somehow gotten it into my head that if I wasn't wearing the dust mask, maybe I'd start growing hair on my face instead of my-- you know what, that's not going in the official log. I wanted facial hair, is the point.

We pushed our way in and started recording-- introduced ourselves, had a silly little moment or two, then started walking. We were in one of the lower hallways, where the grunts had lived, and it was lined wall to wall with old tapestries and hanging fabric to insulate it.

They just... lived underground like drilbur. Kind of fucked up, seeing so many of them in the aftermath, pasty pale and blinking like they'd never seen so much daylight. Also kind of fucked up that they were just allowed to walk free after the shit they pulled, but I guess my beef's not with the grunts. Not really.

I knew, vaguely, that they were some kind of cult who'd been taught a revisionist history, that Reshiram was some great hero and Zekrom was the lesser jealous villain, but this... cemented it. Suddenly it was like we were walking with the memories of real people, in that hallway full of tapestries.

And most of them were burned. Not completely, just... bits and pieces. Precise. As we went on, we started to notice the patterns. A lot of the tapestries were just...everyday stuff, people going about their lives, woman posing with her skitty stuffed in a silly dress, bunch of guys eating dinner together.

The burn marks were just... I mean, I thought they were chemical burns at first. They bleached the surrounding threads a pure white, but they smelled no different than actual burned fabric. And I would, unfortunately, know what burned fabric smelled like. I didn't process what was being burned out at first until I saw a tapestry of a classroom-- one room schoolhouse kind of thing. And every single child was bleached white and burned through, leaving a swiss cheese mess of empty desks and scenery.

I wish I knew what happened next. But in all honesty, there wasn't even panic or darkness or any warning, I was just staring at the ceiling, like I'd spaced out. And I started to realize that someone was yelling my name.

I....should have panicked. I mean. It looked like some kind of torture dungeon, exactly the kind of thing you'd see in a cult. Sol was...locked in some kind of cage. I dunno, I was strapped down to a table and couldn't really turn my head. But it felt right, somehow. I mean, it's going to sound stupid. You're going to laugh. But my heart was pounding like crazy, and for once I wasn't vibrating out of my skin. Like this was the adventure I'd always craved.

tips for naming a plushie friend? i recently modded a dog plush to make them more sparkle dog like by adding patches and piercings n stuff and have just been calling them patch puppy but want to give them an official name because they’re going to become my fursona.

This turned into a long answer so I've put it under a cut for you:

My main advice for naming plushies is the same as my main advice for life in general, which is "never do what everyone else is doing". No 'Patch' or 'Buttons' here (unless you want to, obviously). Let's come up with something a bit more unique.

I like to look at name meanings, and find a name that has a relevant meaning or a meaning that is personally significant to me. BehindTheName is my favourite site for name meanings, but there are plenty of others you can use to find something significant.

If you want something totally unique, you could even pick a few names you like the meanings of, and mash them up to create something totally new, which would fit your plushie's sewn-together aesthetic!

Another nice option is to look at names from mythologies that speak to you (I've always enjoyed Arthurian legend myself, and of course Irish mythology, and some Welsh tellings of the King Arthur stories… my grandmother used to say we were part Welsh, but she made up a lot of things so who knows about that) Anyway, side rant aside, you can pick names from mythology, but if the stories are very old you could always look at more archaic names for the figures, such as 'Gwenhwyfar' instead of 'Guinevere'. In a similar vein, literary names are always a good choice. You could scope out some old novels with the kind of vibes you want and see if any names of characters or authors stick out. The older the books, the more delightfully old-timey the names tend to be.

where does and doesn't he have fur??

(nothing explicit, just putting it under a readmore bc long)

somehow, despite the Hiruzen x Enma porn drawings* that have been floating around half-formed inside my skull for years now, it is only NOW that i realize: i have no idea what Enma looks like underneath that iconic fit

so analyzing the images:

on his head we see both furred (hair + beard + sideburns -zones) and seemingly non-furred (middle part of face) areas

(tail is furry, obviously)

his hands + feet are mostly non-furred, but there is fur on at least the back of his wrists + ankles visible below the edge of his sleeves(/l...leg sleeves? is that what they're called?? sleeves, but for legs instead of arms)

regarding his neck, without going through the episodes he's in, the only shot i've been able to find with the right angle seems to be this MTG/YGO-style card of him:

(the origins of which i do not know. fanmade? official merch? is the image a still from the anime, or was it originally drawn for this card? and by whom? i haven't bothered to try to find out, will update if i do. but anyway)

it looks like there isn't any fur on his neck (except maybe down the back underneath where his long hair hangs down and obscures the area)

we also do not see any chest fur extending up past his neckline

...and beyond this, we know nothing.

i'm already exercising some creative license in how tall to make him (i've got a working number BUT i'm not saying yet in case i decide it's completely wrong whilst trying to actually draw him lol), since a) manga evidence is limited + anime evidence inconsistent, and b) i habitually will just directly contradict canon if i have an idea i'm attached to anyway... so i've got no issue on principle with just filling in the blanks according to my whim...

but i'm kind of just not getting any clear impression of what to picture re: fur pattern

considering looking at photos of actual monkeys to see if i that gives me any ideas... but in that case, what kind of monkey??

it's also complicated bc in a lot of shots he looks to me more anthropomorphic than the avg monkey? (but this is harder to tell w/ primates than w/ other creatures anyway...) (and not to mention the limited pool of Enma reference imgs AGAIN, but damn... a tiny handful of manga panels, and then his brief anime appearance was in the middle of the arc that brought us some of THE most iconic moments in wonky-lookin Naruto animation. if that fight in the anime was my sole reference for Hiruzen and Orochimaru, i wouldn't be very sure how anthropomorphic they were supposed to look either lmao)

What is The Loft?

I’ve been meaning to collate some of the Lore™ surrounding my fursona Lavender, and their pocket dimension called The Loft. And since I just went through a whole lot of my blog and gave the insp pictures for the loft their very own tag (#the loft, and #loft lore), I figured I should do a lore dump post for it as well. It’s a long one, so I’ll put the details behind a read more. So, to start off!

The Loft is a “pocket” dimension roughly 10km in radius, located somewhere in between the countless realities of the multiverse. While large for a pocket dimension, it technically constitutes as its own plane of existence, and in that respect it’s very much on the smaller side. The Loft’s boundaries aren’t defined by walls, but rather distance from the distinct mountain that marks the center of the realm. Past the 10km point, distance starts to compress rapidly in one direction, meaning you could walk for hours off into the distance and then make the journey back in less than a minute. The boundaries of the loft are occupied by a sky, sun, and stars, and the celestial bodies do “orbit” in a way, slipping out of view underneath the loft’s landmass far past the distance boundary. The weather is unpredictable and often extreme, with frequent storms, changes in lighting, and odd celestial events.

As for how Lavender’s connected to the loft, it’s more accurate to say that Lavender *is* the Loft, the dragon existing as both a person and a place. While their physical body anchors the loft to somewhere in the multiverse, they have a constant background awareness of being the rocks that make up the mountain, the wood that makes up the trees, the clouds that make up the sky, etc. This also means they have a very high degree of control over how the landscape and space within the loft operates, with the Loft’s current look and function being a reflection of Lavender’s tastes and preferences. Within the Loft, Lavender can bend space, conjure matter out of nothing, and rearrange the landscape with fairly little effort. This dual person-place nature also means sometimes Lavender has a slightly odd perception of places, “talking” to them in a way that doesn’t always make sense to onlookers.

The Loft is anchored to somewhere in the multiverse by Lavender, and as such they can’t use it to jaunt through different dimensions. In addition, the Loft’s influence can only manifest in a very short range around Lavender, roughly 1 meter in radius. Mostly, this just means Lavender can make portals into the loft for others to hop inside. Notably though, this distance limitation applies to everything about the loft, meaning if Lavender creates an item from matter conjured in the loft, it will literally fade from existence if moved more than a few feet outside one of the portals. Lavender also has authority over “what” can enter the Loft, meaning the can effectively use their portals as forcefields as well, creating a portal but denying entry. All this considered, Lavender’s physical body is very closely connected to the Loft, and you can often see through the membranes of their wings into the Loft itself. Finally, a major restriction of the Loft is that Lavender can only exit the loft within 3 meters of where they entered, meaning they can’t use it to teleport or jump through different dimensions.

The geography inside the Loft is chaotic compared to most landscapes, with nearly a dozen biomes crammed together into the 10km radius (not unlike those elementary school diagrams that show what different landscape features are called). Still, while the geography tends to shift around, I’ll list a few important/consistent locations because I want to :3

-The Mountain- The center of the Loft, and the “anchor” to which distance is measured from. It’s a very jagged, vertical peak, stretching high up into the sky and visible from practically anywhere inside the Loft. Also has a few floating crags around the peak, held in place by gravitational anomalies.

-The Cabin- Lavender’s house, a structure resembling a log cabin that’s spread out across the entirety of the Loft, at least from the outside. Inside, the rooms are connected as you’d expect, with the kitchen just through the doorway from the lounge, the bedrooms upstairs, and so on. Despite this, the cabin is distinctly non-euclidian, as entering the lounge through the front door halfway up the mountain and then walking over to the kitchen will let you look out the window into the boreal forest. A convenient way to get around for guests, as it beats walking several kilometres and it connects all of the notable locations and biomes of the Loft.

-The Great Tree/Lavender’s Loft Cafe/Dragon’s Hoard- Lavender’s main form of income, a small cafe located in the loft and connected through a tiny hole-in-the-wall property in the real world. The Cafe is located in the branches of one of the biggest trees in the Loft, stretching up above the canopy of the southern forest. Lavender’s the only employee and they’re open 3 days a week, with the cafe known for having incredible ambience and views of the loft, as well as an owner who will kick out rude customers without a second thought. Also, Lavender’s draconic hoard sits on the second floor of the cafe, a collection of trinkets, collectibles, mtg cards, gems, and various knick-knacks they’ve collected over the years. It’s technically open for business and you can buy things from the hoard, but you’ll have to offer up something that Lavender wants for their hoard in return.

-Notable Biomes-

while the above 3 locations are most noteworthy, I also wanna do a quick overview of the rest of the places that the Loft encompasses :3

-Southern forest: A wide, sprawling tropical forest, with the massive Lilac River winding through it. The rainiest location in the loft, tied with the coast and the wetlands.

-Coast: The biggest body of water in the loft, stretching out into the southeast distance barrier. Fed by the Lilac river, and subject to occasional flash storms and tidal waves.wetlands.

-Wetlands: A large, mangrove-populated swamp on the east side of the loft. Winding and mazelike, hard to navigate, but strikingly beautiful. Has a series of docks and walkways to make boat travel feasible.

-Terraces: A set of terraced, stepped hills on the northeast side of the mountain. Lavender’s imported quite a lot of dirt from the real world here, in order to grow plants that won’t disappear when taken outside the Loft.

-Plains: The flat grasslands at the bottom of the Terraces. Great place for picnics or watching the sky. Also gently sloped for most of its length, with a few paved paths starting at the terrace making for great downhill races on skateboards or bikes.

-Boreal Forest: A much more temperate forest to the north, populated by pines and with a few lakes dotted about. The smaller Indigo River runs through here, before flowing into the Molten Straight and then the Craglands. Also home to another massive tree similar to the Southern Forest, this one houses Lavender’s library in the Cabin.

-Boreal Reaches: The coldest area in the Loft by far, the northern section of the boreal forest that sees trees grow more sparsely and give way to fields of deep snow. Lit eerily at night by the stars and aurora, and home to a hot spring on its east side. Lavender can often be seen with the reaches in their wings on hot days, keeping themself cool with the arctic air from the loft.

-Molten Straight: A barren straight of molten rock and volcanic activity, broken up by large crystal formations. Located northwest of the mountain. The Indigo River runs through, snaking around any volcanic formations and flowing in an unpredictable path to the Craglands. Tied with the desert for the hottest location in the Loft.

-Craglands: A massive vertical chasm that cuts into the western landscape, stretching a little over a kilometre deep, and stretching straight to the distance barrier. The Indigo river pours in through the Molten Straight, creating a massive waterfall in the center of the chasm. There are a few Cabin rooms built into the walls of the ravine here, each offering a spectacular view. The small, pooling creek at the bottom is frigid cold.

-Desert: An expanse of dunes and sand in the western-south area of the loft, not quite as empty as you’d think. The dunes shift rapidly, sometimes uncovering old stone formations, and an oasis sits on the far western side. The sand here seems oddly attracted back to its home, any sand tracked into the cabin or another biome will slowly crawl back towards the dunes.

Rosy's story, part one: Monahven

Alright, so I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I keep putting it off. Because I'm lazy. But NO MORE. Here is an official summary/rundown of my character Rosy's past lore and backstory! (You'll be able to find all the parts of it as they're released on the tag #rosylore!)

Rosy is, for those who don't know, a moth who I played on the lore-based origins server the ratsSMP! I played them there for several months before leaving, but I fully intend to continue their story from where I left off on my own server-- just in a new, separate world. (And how that works will be explained once we get the lore rolling on the new SMP!)

This is just a quick, condensed version of the story; it's meant to be a catch-up for anyone curious about my past Minecraft RP activities, and what Rosy got up to before the new SMP's premier! I would simply share my old VODs, but, unfortunately, almost all of them have been lost due to me not realizing just how briefly twitch holds onto VODs when you aren't an affiliate/partner. So, instead of sharing those, I'm simply going to tell the story like this!

Also, I will be posting this story in parts, as it's... pretty long if I go into any amount of detail. This will cover part one-- the first few major lore streams, Rosy's arrival up through the first major conflict they experienced.

Due to my never having done minecraft RP before, I wanted to start off with a character who is a clean slate, so that they learned about the world and adjusted to things as I did. Rosy is a combination of my fursona's design, and the basic parts of the personality of another OC of mine, Regina-- specifically, her innocence and gentle nature were "borrowed" for Rosy.

All that to say, Rosy's backstory is pretty simple-- they hatched out in a flower field biome, and then grew up there as a caterpillar, hanging out with the other baby bugs and eating leaves. Once they reached maturity, emerged from their cocoon with their shiny new wings, they took off to explore the world and meet new people. They wanted to find where they belonged in the world!

They landed in a country called Monahven. There, they immediately befriended a phantom who went by the name Butter, and then the king of Monahven himself, a starborne man named Joey.

Little did Rosy know, befriending both of them would be a pretty bad mistake, given the two men were actually in the middle of a conflict Rosy didn't begin to understand.

See, Butter was the leader of a cult that worshipped a trio of gods; which would have been fine, except that he opposed Joey's reign and was conspiring with Lewis, a man who had been exiled before Rosy's arrival, to take over Monahven and remove Joey from power. Joey, of course, was not a fan of that idea, and had no idea that Rosy was involved with the cult... until one day, he decided to down a potion of invisibility and follow Rosy as they made their way out of their home, intending to prank them.

... what ended up happening instead is that he followed Rosy to the cult's temple, where he overheard a meeting between them and Butter. As it turned out, on that day, Rosy passed a verbal test, and was promoted to the cult's second in command; which meant that they would be given secret information that no one else in the cult knew. The information he revealed was that they were intending to take Joey out of power by force. Rosy-- gentle, skittish, and loyal as they were-- didn't want that to happen to her friend, but... they thought maybe, if they agreed to participate, they could do something to protect their dear friends from hurting each other, or anyone else. So they agreed to help, fully planning to do anything they could to stop it from actually happening, or at least from being quite so violent.

Rosy returned home only for their friend and fellow, younger moth, Wyn, to catch them on the way into their peony-shaped house, giving them a note that Joey had sent; it simply read to meet Joey in his tower, and that it was urgent.

Rosy went to Joey's tower, deeply afraid of what he would say and not understanding what was going on; when they arrived, Joey sat in his throne, and he stood to face them, pacing as he spoke. He told them that this was his least favorite part of the job; that he didn't want to have to confront them, or see them in his tower under these kinds of circumstances, but...

Wordlessly, he tossed a potion of invisibility onto the floor in front of Rosy.

"I was there," he said, and Rosy was shocked into a stammering near-silence.

Joey informed them that he'd heard it all-- the plan to overthrow him, Rosy agreeing to participate, and he was hurt and disappointed. But, he said, he wouldn't punish them, as he knew that they were innocent-- they were naive and nervous and easily-lead, and didn't understand the conflict they'd walked in on. The only things he asked of Rosy in return for his mercy were that, if they were ever called on to fight him, they wouldn't respond; and that, if they became privy to important information about the cult's activities, they would report the information to him.

And so, in exchange for the king's mercy, Rosy became a double agent on his behalf. And it made them absolutely miserable.

They felt guilt-- immense amounts of guilt, hating to betray their dear friend, their very first friend since they'd left home, Butter. Yet if they refused, or withheld information, they would be betraying their other dearest friend, Joey... and not only that, but they would be betraying the king of the nation in which they lived, a man easily powerful enough to make them good and afraid of him despite their friendship.

However, Joey had done one thing that still kept Rosy's trust in him, despite their fear of his power; when Rosy voiced their fears of what the cult would do if they learned they'd been betrayed, Joey promised them the full protection of both himself and Monhaven as a whole. He would personally protect them from anyone who would do them harm, and use his power as the king to protect them even when he couldn't personally be present to do so.

Guilty and conflicted, Rosy left the tower, fretting to themselves about their new role and just how scary everything was suddenly becoming, but determined to do whatever they could to help their friends.

This is our Dobby-Bear!

Yeah, if you can’t guess, around now is the time I am going to put down the kids gloves and will really dig into why SYAC is garbage. And a huge factor into this, is in part Dobson’s self insert past 2012.

The existence of the blue bear as Dobson officially calls it (or Dobbear as most people call it) is in my opinion rather baffling already in terms of design choices.

I get e.g. that Dobson wanted to distance himself of his past humanoid self inserts as much as possible. But why of all things a bear?

The fact I am focused on that may sound weird, but hear me out for a bit. For starters, I know that Dobson likes western animation. And seeing how western animation has for the longest time been dominated by anthropomorphic animals, I can understand why he would redesign himself as a funny cartoon animal.

But there are at least three things that feel weird about it. First, Dobson had made it clear in the past that he hates furries. So him actually redesigning himself as an anthropomorphic animal is kinda weird

In fact, Dobson himself acknowledges that realization in one of his strips shortly after his fursona took over.

Second, of all the animals to choose from, why a bear? This question is in so far valid, as that bears are not necessarily one of the first to go animals, furries or western animators tend to go for when designing an anthro. And before any furries or anthro enthusiasts are calling me a hater, let me make one thing clear: I like anthropomorphic cartoon and comic characters too, and am okay with most furries. As long as you don’t have a diaper fetish, are a pedophile  or hurt actual animals, you can do and enjoy whatever you like.

But I am also aware enough of furry culture to know, that bear based anthros are most of the time hyper sexualized and muscular, connecting them to how the term “bear” is used in real life gay culture. Which is okay, I think it is just a funny coincidence that Dobson choose an animal, that most furries associate with a life style that Dobson is deeply afraid of, even if he claims to be an LGBT ally.

And as stated earlier, bears are not necessarily the go to animals for animators.

Don’t get me wrong, we all know some cartoon bears like Winnie the Pooh, Yogi Bear, Poh and the main cast of TaleSpin (btw, Kit Cloudkicker fan for life). But lets be honest here; ducks, mice, rabbits, canines, felines, equines and any other “easily to domesticate” animal in the real world tends to make better for easily recognizable cartoon characters than something that can reach a size of 3 meters tops and weigh over 500 pounds.

Truth be told, the pool of cartoon bears is so small, these are the first two things that came to my mind when thinking what may have inspired the Dobbear

And wouldn’t you know? According to Dobson, the Carebears were supposedly the main inspiration for his design.

 Unfortunately, this is also more or less the most I could find of Dobson addressing what went into the creation of the character.

Which kinda brings me also to the third issue as why I think the bear redesign is weird; It is too sudden.

One day Dobson draws himself as a shaved 20 something, the next day he is a fedora wearing Carebear clone, likely created and then rejected by Care Bear villain No Heart, as part of a plot to create a mole when conquering Care-A-Lot.

… and now I need to reevaluate my choices in life, that I was able to make such an elaborate Carebear joke.

It is just a change of design that in my opinion should have been addressed either outside of the comic or in context of it. Which it kinda is, but isn’t.

And then only 13 strips or so later in something called “Continuity” is Dobson more or less willing to address the change…

And he does so in a passive aggressive manner, with Persistent Pam as a stand in for those asking him what is going on, while Dobson just dismissively continues working.

On one hand, you can argue that this is just the joke. The change happened, don’t bother with it, just enjoy what is still to come. And you know, I don’t want to make a rope out of everything Dobson ever posted, including that comic.

But then you have also to account for the fact, that Dobson would eventually associate himself with the blue bear so much, he made him his avatar and icon for his comics and online accounts. In fact, that one comic I posted WAY BACK in the first Master post of Dobson reminiscing how he started SYAC?

For reasons that are a bit confusing to me, he redrew himself (badly I have to add) as the blue bear in one of his earliest strips ever. The one where he belittles the manga fangirl for drawing manga. So I have to ask, what is going on here? Has Dobson increasingly decided to reset his past? Does he want to destroy any traces of his “human” self in his work to create the illusion to any new readers, that he never was as controversial of a person as he was and that there never was a need for him to reimagine and reinvent himself? Is this 1984? And how many of you realize that this paragraph is just me going conspiracy nuts for the sake of entertainment?

But still, it is kinda weird that he went to the bother of redrawing his human self in that one background sketch as a bear. Plus, I honestly think Dobson never even attempting to “explain” the change in the pages of his comics is a wasted opportunity for some decent jokes. Like every time Dobson tries to explain why he is a bear now, something interrupts him or we only get fragments of a story that if we put them together would be as ridiculous as the entirety of “Trapped in the Closet”.

I mean, the dumbest joke idea I have in mind is that Dobson went to build a bear to get a present for a family member. Instead he was build into a bear and later on successfully sued the company, which explains why he can afford to live despite not really working on comics anymore but lecture people badly about the evils of nerd culture.

So yeah, three major things about the design choice that more or less confuse me.

But here is the thing: Confusion is nothing compared to feeling genuine disdain for the design at hand. And compared to Dobson’s earlier human designs, Dobbear is just utterly unlikable.

A lot of that boils down to the following three facts:

1. From a certain point in time on (which I will cover in more detail later on) Dobson uses his bearsona primarily as a soapboxing mouth piece to talk about “politics” in nerd culture. Or at least what Dobson perceives as politics, coming off like a condescending jackass who believes among other things that white people are inherently incapable to identify with black people…

 … or that comic book shops have radicalized nerd culture, essentially calling them terror cells.

Which btw are so inherently offensive to me, I promise I will cover these two separately. One even sooner than the other.

2. If Dobbear is not talking about politics, he will tend to be a smug asshole to other people (most of the time strawmen) or their interests in one way or another. Being e.g. used by Dobson to express his disdain for criticism…

 or to mock legit criticism he had gotten by exaggerating things.

 All while also tending to make his critics look like inherent assholes.

These two facts, combined with Dobson’s average erratic behavior online on platforms such as dA, twitter and tumblr over the years, pretty much assured such a close association between the two, that a separation between artist and creation was not possible anymore, condemning them.

And for the record; Dobson was always a bit of a whinner who liked to act as if he was a better nerd than the average comic book fan. Otherwise, we would have not e.g. gotten Danny and Spot out of it.

But as the years went by in the last decade, Dobson turned from someone in his mid 20s, desperate to be seen as a “quirky” and likable internet persona (like certain internet reviewers), into a virtue signaling, lesbian obsessed asshole who likely regrets his life choices.

… Like certain internet reviewers.

But seriously, Dobson turned into someone who would flip the lid at something as ridiculous as Cheeto flavored chicken fries…

 While also being just the worst type of condescending nerd….

All while losing his mind about politics. Especially after Donald Trump became president

And just as Dobson became a radicalized left winged jackass who saw politics in everything he consumed, so did by default Dobbear, because Dobbear was not a character with his own personality, but a mouth piece.

Something I am about to get into detail in the near future. But till then, I want to cover in the next post the following third and final fact about Dobbear that really makes him unlikable to me: The fact he can’t be happy.

The saying he’s talking about 「花より団子」has a meaning that’s kind of like “choosing substance over style”, or preferring practicality over aesthetics and/or style. Mind, it’s not used as a positive thing to describe someone haha. It’s kind of like criticizing someone for not appreciating or understanding the beauty of something

Brief Event Fluff

This event is in their relatively-new “Royal Garden” format. It’s just a revamp of collection events, but it’s cute bc you can take their pets out to war to bring back some extra points every three hours. This is probably the most official “rendition” of the BMP1 character’s “pets”. They’re not like the BMP2 charas (where most everyone has an actual pet) so lol with some of them:

wil’s is a terrifying prince rabbit doll bc… carrots or something. somebody retcon in a bootleg lassie for him please i hate looking at this thing

keith is his dumb lion fursona like kevin’s. it even stands upright and everything

roberto has a legit rabbit, which i think has been his motif for a long time and was then further solidified with the rabbit doll in his time travel bday story.

joshua’s is Kyuu. idr if kyuu made any named appearances in his English content, but kyuu is that same grey cat ↓

(there’s more but u get the message) sieg’s cat is “Kyuu the Third” where Sieg’s cat is related to this Kyuu lol

glenn has a hamster(?). kuon has a squirrel (and i think shion the chipmunk?) so it might be a bootleg mascot of that

ed has a pegasus-type-looking horse. I think Arionne exists only in the non-social continuity, and the one BMP fansite master I look to claims that the horse is named Raphael. idk I never really bothered to play much ed content so hmmm

yakov obv has Daifuku which still cracks me up bc it is among the smallest and least threatening of the animals. charas like ivan and ryuo have wolves and tigers which are still cool but cute but the guy with hunting and shooting as his listed hobbies has a very small owl that doesn’t do anything cool except be a klepto and bother him at work

zain has a panther-like cat, identical to jin. but if I really want to go wehhh zain master race zain had the black cat motif in his avatar items before they even bothered to make jin a major character iirc. the fansite master seems to think it’s supposed to be a call to Suzu (the cat in Zain’s time travel bday route) but hmmm idk

FLASHBack - Rapture / Higher / Delineation

It's Thursday and that means FLASHBack. This time we'll be looking at animations from Ray Avid Lebon, who in the mid 2000s was an animation student at the same Chicago-area art school as R. Wappin, an animator you may remember from one of my posts about Weird Al's official music videos. Ray is also listed on Albino Blacksheep as their "most active female animator and musician". She would later go on to be a producer on the award winning short animated film Play Date, but I'd like to talk about some of her more personal projects, a series of fiction and art that she called "Requiem of the Bandii", set on a world called Thae that was home to many fantastical races of creatures.   One of those races were the Verr, an anthropomorphic race with feline and equine traits. Ray would feature one particular Verr in three of her flash animations, and while I won't presume to call the character a self-insert or even a fursona, she is named "Avid Lebon". Take from that what you will. Ray's first animation of Avid was for AlbinoBlacksheep's Flash Developer Contest #8 and was posted to the site on 1 October 2005. The contest challenge was to make an animated music video of at least 30 seconds in length. Lebon's entry was Rapture, set to the song from iiO. Noted at the time for it's smooth lipsynching (prompting ABS to request her to put together a tutorial on the subject), the 2D animation also gives a look of having been rendered in 3D in places. And before the inevitable comparison to Princess Celestia from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, it's worth noting that Avid predates that series by a half decade.  

On 12 August 2006, Avid would again hop on her windsurfer, this time singing a song of Lebon's own creation, Higher. While it seems clear that there was some asset re-use from the previous Flash, the lipsynch has been redone to match the new song, and Ray showed off with some new, skilled water reflection animations in the background. The Verr diva would return to Albino Blacksheep a third time for the 2008 Tournament of Flash Artists with the animation Delineation. This one departs from the riding the windsurfer and singing routine, to instead give some insight how Lebon the Flash artist draws Lebon the character.   On a more recent, unrelated note, Krinkels has put out fresh Madness Combat content. (Caution: Body Horror, Torture, defiance of the laws of physics) When I ended the Mid-Month Madness series, I had mentioned that there was a Flash in the works, Ultimatefear.fla, that'd introduce a new character called Scrapeface. That animation has been renamed An Experiment and was posted publicly on 6 June 2020. In it we find the answer to the question that's been burning in everyone's mind: Where did Sanford and Deimos get that car they were driving in Madness Combat 9? *listens to offstage voice* That wasn't the question everyone was wondering about? *Gets handed note, reads it* What do you mean the question was "How do hands work?" -- We all know that Krinkels was just taking an animation shortcut by not drawing arms for these characters, you can see a similar shortcut with the hair of the girl from that "Play Date" animation that Ray Lebon produced and was linked to above. Just because it looks like it's floating near by, disconnected doesn't mean that's what they're actually doing. *Listens to offstage voice again* Oh. Turns out that is what the hands are doing in the Madness Combat universe after all, just floating near the body. And the titular experiment of the Animation, which Krinkels has verified to be part of the main Canon storyline (and fans presume occurs sometime between Madness Combat 6.5 and 7.5), is an investigation by the A.A.H.W. to find out what just what happens when those floating hands are forcibly separated by a sizable distance from the body controlling them. Turns out that the result is Reality itself gets broken, and the owner of the hands starts glitching out horribly. The result has been described by some as a cross between broken ragdolling in Gmod and the Russian Sleep Experiments Creepypasta.   Next time, we'll check in with that new middle-of-the-month staple, Brackenwood, and see what shenanigans Bitey's gotten up to.

doing this whole OC meme thing for me mostly, very likely not interesting to anyone else (because I’m not really explaining who any of these guys are and I don’t expect anyone to know all of them, also its formatted badly and i didn’t edit it well) so i’m putting it under a cut

The oldest OC I still bring back occasionally is Bluebell, who is an alien creature I invented in 6th grade. She used to be named Hana, because I was taking Japanese lessons and was in that phase of elementary school where you think that naming your characters after a word in another language is always the best and coolest idea

The newest OC I have that’s like, a main character is I guess Viarnne, but my newest OC that’s not a fan character is Slice the rainbow layer cake dragon

I can’t pick a favorite OC very easily- I love Pike and Tu personality-wise a whole lot out of my Dialien characters, and I think Viarnne is my favorite Neopet right now. OH also i love my old character Alkaline

picking a favorite OC design is even harder- of my neopets, Alxxa has the coolest design I think, both to draw and as far as general appearance goes. For all original characters, my favorite for a long time was the character I made whose design was... literally adapted from Alxxa but not a Neopet. I think I called it Tiramisu?? its been a while since I’ve actually drawn Tiramisu

My main reason for making OCs is sort of different for different types of characters- I think part of it is that I legitimately want to tell stories, but the biggest thing IS that I just find character design fun, in particular designing and drawing creatures.

Uhh it’s different for different characters but it usually involves finding something fun to draw and then drawing it a bunch, to see if it stays fun, or if I can keep it fun. If I don’t have fun drawing a character, they tend to sort of fall away- like, you don’t see me drawing Jukebawks often, even though I had fun coming up with a design, because she’s... hard to draw, and doesn’t have as much range of expression as a lot of my other characters. (plus I don’t have a personality for her- if I have a backstory I’m really invested in for a character, I can basically draw very similar pictures of them over and over again and have fun because I like their story so much, which is probably a bit of a flaw)

I don’t really ship my OCs with anyone else’s- I’ve never even really shipped my OCs with like, canon characters from anything? I’m not necessarily opposed to the idea of shipping my characters with someone else’s, but I’m not very good at communication or roleplaying, and a lot of my characters aren’t really what I would call ‘shippable’, so it tends to be easier to just work by myself on that kind of thing.

uhhh i have a couple ocs who I ship but i’m really self conscious about doing so, so i talk about most of them almost never. I ship Sam and Viarnne but I want to actually have a story where it makes sense for them to end up forming a relationship like that, so for now i’m mostly focusing on how their friendship will work (also, just like, assume none of my OCs are fucking I guess?? even the ones i ship together- that’s one of those things that’s just never really been interesting to me, and i mostly just don’t want to deal with jokes about it because like, please?? i like relationship stuff but i just don’t get anything out of sex stuff, jokes or otherwise, most of the time. also please don’t take this as a moral judgement if that’s something you do, i don’t care as long as its not like, something morally reprehensible, you do you). oh i also have Alxxa and Sensurround (neopets), Zotyre and Gyronaut (neopets), Alkaline and Skurl (original story), uhhh kind of not sure if Tu and Iris are gonna end up having a romantic relationship in my Dialien story, i need to do more thinking

weirdest... oc... uhhhhh i’m not sure what that would entail, exactly. my fursona might be the weirdest just from like, not having any sort of world or story or anything, she just floats in space and picks up space radio signals and stuff

I don’t really have enough villain ocs- I guess at this point, Chexerton is kind of a villain, he’s like a shitty space security guard for Virtupets. most of my completely original stories don’t have villains- Dialiens (it needs a better name- maybe just Dial) is more about mental health struggles and potentially capitalism or colonialism, and with LOSER (a story i think i have barely ever talked about on here, its the one with Skurl and Alkaline) i straight up can’t decide whether its a fun road trip where character flaws are explored and then like, amends are made, or if it ultimately ends with the characters not overcoming their flaws and destroying each other. its kind of been both in my mind for a long time which is why i can’t write it- can’t decide whether the relationship should be ultimately healthy or toxic

This is a tough question- I don’t think of my OCs as real people, exactly, that I could be mean to or ‘torture, muahaha i love seeing my babies suffer’- but they’re deeply personal to me, and I don’t think its always useful to see them as constructs unworthy of being treated with kindness. I guess what I would consider being ‘nice’ to my OCs is trying to realize them better and have them make sense and function properly in whatever stories I’m trying to tell using them. In that regard, I guess there’s some I theoretically ‘neglect’ by not really focusing on them very often, or by getting tired of their stories but never officially ‘getting rid’ of them?? Plus I don’t have time to develop literally every character I’ve ever had. I have all kinds of old OCs that i’m not planning to do anything with anymore, but they meant something to me at some point, and its not like they’re going to pile up and take up space in my house if I don’t, like, sell them. I like knowing that if I ever need to look back at my old stuff for ideas, there’s a bunch of stuff I might be able to use or repurpose again someday.

Again, I don’t really think about it as ‘killed’. I guess I don’t have the main character from Skurl’s original story anymore, who was like a mammalian Invader Zim-esque fantasy evil fortress knight?? and Skurl was the funny animal curmudgeon sidekick. I made that protagonist up because the story needed a protagonist, and he never even really had a personality to speak of- his rival was better defined, the mad scientist from the idea had a more interesting character design- basically every other character from that story I might bring back, but that protagonist is probably gone for good. Maybe I’ll bring back his weird ear decorations that smushed his fabric-y rabbit ears down, those were kind of the most interesting thing he had going on. OH if you mean literally killed off in a story, in the nightmare angst version of LOSER Skurl ends up like, not DEAD exactly, but severely fucked up to the point where he’d be better off dead. And Viarnne is technically dead

Oh man years ago I had an OC named O-BR who was a robotic panda bear toy who was possessed by the soul of some dude who died who was a father, and now is kind of the robotic parental figure of the child who owns the bear toy. i don’t think that actually works well as a story- i never even figured out what that dude’s name was, just the name of the bear. it’s name was O-BR because its ears were like, floating purple plastic cheerio shapes that hovered next to his head. this was another ‘i’m obsessed with invader zim’ era character

80% of my Neopet OCs at any given time- also 80% of my non fandom based OCs at any given time. I don’t have time to come up with stories for all of them, and I tend to just focus on whatever is interesting enough that I remember it

I hate drawing Jukebawks... i’m sorry jukebawks........ maybe i should like, offer her up for trade, but i’m not sure anyone else would want her?? i like the idea of her!! i should actually probably design her to be easier for me to draw, in all honesty. When it comes to writing though, Moe has given me so much grief because I honest to god don’t know how he fits into the story and group dynamic in Dialiens. He’s like, kind of an asshole loner who keeps to himself and doesn’t want people to bother him?? i’m not even confident he uses ‘he’ pronouns. i don’t know

this feels like its more designed for people who have more humanoid ocs where they’re heights are more, like, similar, so being short or tall is a thing?? like, for Neopets, Alxxa’s the tallest because he’s really long, and Viarnne is the shortest because he’s an oval that’s like a foot tall. as far as the only character heights that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about, the Dialiens, tallest to shortest, are: Pike, Moe (not counting the ears), Iris, Chives, Tu

I guess my oldest ocs are Zotyre, Gyronaut, and that mutant Moehog lady- youngest would be Chilston, i guess. and as far as OCs, i have no idea, i don’t think enough about age. approaching characters from the angle that they’re Cartoons!!!! and then deciding to try and give them nuance later means that everyone’s just sort of nebulously adult-ish

Do I dislike any of my OCs, like, as characters, or as people? I think Pike, despite being one of my favorite OCs, would irritate me quite a bit in real life, because his personality is heavily influenced by traits that annoyed me about other people I’ve met, but like, trying to see them more sympathetically?? but he’d get on my nerves. Iris fits this a lot too- I don’t think I’d like Moe much either?? i dunno its a weird question, i like them because they’re my characters and also because they’re not real. i don’t think most of them would be friends with me or anything if they were real, even if so many of them are based on parts of me

oh i’ve made self inserts- i definitely had a self insert Invader Zim character that i drew maybe a single time, and then pretended to be in daydreams in my head while bored during school. she had an angsty backstory. then after that i pretended to be Trigger in my daydream stories all the time in school for like, 3 years (like, during points in time where i was zoning out during class, or walking between classes)

uhhhhh I regret not doing more with these characters, and i regret that i can’t answer a lot of important questions about characters I’ve had for years Now. i’ve had them for years, so they feel really definitive and rock solid in my mind, so they’re hard to change, but also they’re really not as nuanced as i want them to be. its a bit tough

well someone in freshman year of college who i ended up cutting ties with because of some kind of wild friend group drama and like, important political and philosophical differences, actually knew me from deviantart and remembered one of my OCs. that was pretty wild. that’s one person though... uhhh, are any of my OCs popular?? I’m just excited when anyone finds a character i’ve come up with interesting. I’m glad other people seem to like Viarnne!!! it fills me with terror that i’ll like, ruin him by writing a bad story, but its also exciting and validating to come up with a character story and for other people to also enjoy it

uhhh its Viarnne again. i drew him to try and demonstrate how a robot Kiko could be an appealing character design and it backfired on me. i love drawing Orb with a Face and Arms and i am happy when i see him as my active pet on neopets. I guess Pike also qualifies- when I initially drew the Dialiens, I had very vague personality ideas for them, and I felt like he would be the bully. he has since become very much NOT the bully (like, he seems more like a person who would get bullied) and I’ve grown really fond of him. also i created Trigger to be a Chuck E Cheese style mascot back before fucking Five Nights At Freddy’s existed and destroyed that that as an original idea (fuck you FNAF i have two characters now who are basically... that and you can’t ruin that for me. i was here FIRST (this is a joke its not even that great of a premise, my shit isn’t horror, and i’ll deal)). he was also based on a glow in the dark grey alien and a skeleton and lived in an abandoned pizza entertainment building and was basically an evil villain, and then high school me decided that instead of being that he was gonna be a mutated teenager and it was going to be really angsty. I don’t really have as much interest in that backstory anymore??? but I sure had a lot of fun with it for like 4 years so i think that counts

Tinsel: 32. Do they have any “props” that are a significant part of their life, identity, activities, or self-presentation somehow? What are they, how are they used, and why are they so significant? How would these props’ absence impact them, how would they compensate, and why?- Unfortunately for Tin, he doesn’t really have anything of that variety -- there’s really nothing he carries or uses quite yet that’s become an active part of his personality. though, he’s still a young character, technically only on day 3 of his story, so he’ll probably have something in the future :V 

39. What sort of questions or thoughts recur in their lives, either specifically or as a theme? Why are these never answered, or answered permanently to their satisfaction? - Tin, being basically my rehashed fursona to start out with, obtained my crummy personality trait of indecisiveness! so that being said, he has a lot of...issues with being asked what his plan b in life is. after all, according to Tin, he’s going to be world’s coolest pilot some day and he doesn’t need a backup plan. he could never really find words for what else he wants to do besides that on the basis his options are like, ‘pilot’ or ‘trophy husband’ and only one of these things are acceptable to say out loud. a combination of his fear of not being able to follow his one(1) dream, the fear of rejection, indecisiveness, and his parents stepping in to try and answer any question for him make any relative, next plan questions borderline impossible. 

tldr: if you ask him where to go out to eat he will, in fact, cry all over you

Twine!! the CR boy!!: 23. How do they respond to difficult social moments? What makes them consider a social situation difficult? - see. Twine has gone through a lot. he’s been shot before. he’s participated in riots before. he was a government official before. he survived a previous abusive marriage before. there is legitimately nothing the world could toss at him that he’d even vaguely consider difficult, on the basis he’s dealt with it four times over and could probably come up with 12 solutions within ten minutes of the problem arising. he’s calm in collected in anything that could be difficult, he can diffuse the stress in a room fairly easily, he knows how to ask for help. he’ll be okay. 

26. How do they view and feel about relationships, and how might this manifest in how they handle them, if it does? - Twine’s view of a lot of things is shockingly jaded, considering he’s a happy dad guy, and relationships are definitely up there in like, top 5 things he could not care less about. according to him, relationships are on the same tier as toys -- you either have it forever, just staring at it on a shelf from afar, and the toys you dare play with inevitably end up broken and replaced the next day. to him, there’s no difference between a 50 year marriage and just picking someone up at a bar. they’re both relationships, technically, two people are just much happier in that “cage.” 

he’s like, obviously married now, and in a loving relationship, and the dad of an adopted teenager, but he still tries to keep his distance and makes sure his views on the whole thing are clearly understood. 

his past job list really doesn’t help tbh, as he was basically forcefed ‘have no connections to people’ since he was 12 and it was only when he turned 29 did he finally break away from that. yikes, dude. 

clair! clair! clair! clair!! gonna be CR clair this time!! 14. What do they care deeply about? What kind of loyalties, commitments, moral codes, life philosophies, passions, callings, or spirituality and faith do they have? How do these tend to be expressed?- Clair loves two(2) things. 1. his job as a pediatrician. 2. his brother Twine. if anyone ever pointed out that these were the only things he actually cared about, he’d probably fight them on the streets. the only thing that really motivates him and gets him out of bed is love, though he usually misinterprets it was needing to protect something. he doesn’t have any loyalties to any specific group, his only commitment is work, religion isn’t his style. hes just a kid who wants to protect people as best he can and makes sure they’ll be alright. 

21. What kind of relationships do they tend to intentionally seek out versus actually cultivate? What kind of social contact do they prefer, and why? Clair’s never really like... had many friends of his own or god forbid, boyfriends or anything. he has a few colleagues in his fellowship, which he firmly addresses as colleagues and rarely talks to them outside of the hospital, and he prefers to keep people not so much at an arm’s length, per se, but rather a full body length. he doesn’t like ‘em and he won’t pretend he does. if he did have to find someone, platonically or romantically,, it’d definitely be someone he deems needs some of his protective hand. someone who’s definitely not as smart as he is, has somewhat similar interests, is his position hierarchy wise or lower, has money, and is shorter than him. he’s,,,, creepy and has a checklist of what his ‘ideal sidekick’ looks like.
