killing myself im killing myself im killing
Killing myself im killing myself im killing
I'm with some ball girls lookin' back at it
And a good girl in my goal bracket (Uh)
Got a yellow card that'll let Saudis have it
These Chanel shorts is a bad habit
I-I do balls, Dal Mavericks
My football sneakers, black matted (Uh)
Bitch, never left but I'm back at it
And I'm killin' myself, go messi
Killin' myself, back off
Cause I'm killin' myself, jack off (Uh)
He'll be thinking about me when he misses a goal
Wax on? (Wax off)
National anthem, hats off
Then a bad toss (Uh)
Lemme get a number two, with some chimichurri sauce
Screaming at some bar with my mask off
I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' my
Killin' myself, I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' my, killin' my
Changed the game with that digital goal
Know where you were when that digital popped
I stopped the world
Male or female, it make no difference, I stop the world
World stop... (💚🔪)
Carry on
I'm whippin' that goal
He diggin' that goal
I got it, 11 of that team. Packer full of that ball, baby
Come get you some of that goal, baby
I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' my
Killin' myself, I'm killin' myself, I'm killin' my, killin' my
Cookin' up that field (Field), lookin' like a messi (Mess)
He just wants a tie (Tie), biggin' up my ego (Ego)
(Ridin' through Qatar...) Ridin'-ridin' through Qatar
Smoke it all off, talkin' bout that high-grade
Baby, hold up, I can be your migraine...
Bitches ain't got defense or flow
They have both and an empire also
Keep gettin' gifts from VAR codes at the match
Today I'm icy, but I'm prayin' for some more snow
Let that goal go, let that goal count
(He's in love...) He's in love with that world cup
Why are these bitches never scoring?
You bitches will never get what we've been yearning (Uh)
I'm still gettin' plaques, from my neck damage
Ain't gotta rely on top 11, I am a argie legend
Just go ask the Kings of Qatar, who is the maradona and things of that
Goaling? Look at my finger
Qatar is a glacier, hits like a laser...
Drippin' on that field, trippin' off that goal zone
Flippin' up my shorts and I'll be whippin' all that work
Takin' trips with all saudis, car keys got cars key'd (Uh)
Stingin' with the Qatar Beach and we'll be whippin' all of that D
'Cause argie team are not flawless
We're the poster girls for all this (Uh)
We run around with them ballers
I'm the big worldcupper, go let them whores know (Uh)
Just on this song alone, bitch is on their thirteenth failed goal

Happy STS!!
Everyone has a breaking point, so....
What would make your heroes turn into villians?
Alternatively, what would make your villians turn into heroes? >:]
@bloodlessheirbyjacques
Hello Bees!!! 🐝
That's a great ask from wonderful @bloodlessheirbyjacques!
I will answer for this ask using both "Lost & Found" and my new WIP "Quinque Lupi"
As I don't have certain villains at that point, I will answer "heroes to villains"
~~~
Lost & Found
1. Lily Maradona - if something happened to Lilith/promise to help Lilith
Lily would do anything to give her twin better life than they had before slow manifestation. If anything would happen to them on the way of discovering their powers, somebody would not protect them during fight or they would get killed, Lily's world would fall apart, as over the time she develops strong spiritual bond, also the fact that they are conjoined on this matter would leave a massive hole in Lily's life. Other thing would be if somebody promised Lilith a peaceful life on their own. Lilith is a soul chained to Lily's soul and if there was a way to help Lilith live freely, Lily would do anything to give them that.
2. Lilith Maradona - Lily's death
It's pretty much the same as from Lily's side, though in case of Lilith, they would absolutely snap. The sadness and grief would lead them to shatter and cut the world with their pieces. Basically "my world got destroyed, so I will not destroy yours". They are very impulsive and aggressively protect their closest ones, so there is high probability of them feeling guilt and anger and fallback into their darker, Lost side.
3. Im Jeong Hun - death of his mother
TW: Sexual Assaults, Assault of a minor
Little backstory here: Hun's mom got beaten up when she was coming back home from her nightshift in the convenience store. They had little money, so Hun, 16 at that time, couldn't afford her full treatment and stay at hospital, while she was in the coma. He started working at saunas, where underaged boys and girl were hired as mistresses for the clients. He was earning nice money for over a year, which barely payed off his mother's therapy. One night Hun, 17 years old, was sexually harassed by one of the male clients of the saunas. He fortunately ran away, but was left traumatised and scared even more than before. Still, he lasted there for a year, being treated inhumane, because his whole world was his mother. She was the only person he had left in this world, he sacrificed his education (he dropped out of high school), his mental and physical health to safe her and keep her alive. I think that if she died, he would be left all alone, scarred, scared, used and traumatised. Eventually he would snap and revengeful. He might seek justice for him and his mother, killing and causing suffering to people who hurt them.
4. Oscar Sapienti - not being valued as a person
In Oscar's situation, lack of validation for his hard work would be one reason to turn sides. In the organisation, he has hard time evaluating because if his personality, being stubborn and being not that open minded like others. His narcissistic personality would lead him to getting discouraged to even trying to be better, so if somebody would offer him validation, starting praising him and not noticing a lot of his flaws, he would definitely follow. At least at the beginning. Later on he will get his character progress after meeting Hun, Lily and Lilith.
5. Eva Popova - protecting her friends
Eva would definitely had the arc of going on the dark side to save her friends. There is a really low chance though, because as tactician and detective she would seek the solution until she dies. If there would be no other way, out of pure desperation, she would change sides to safe her friends. Basically "for the greater good" scenario.
6. Jehoel - I challenge @circa-specturgia to answer that question!!! 😈
Quinque Lupi
1. Vieno Mustonen - manipulation and threat of their friends getting hurt
Vieno has similar situation to Eva. It very unlikely to turn them into villain, at least they would be either:
- strongly manipulated, having mental breakdown and moral battle between good and evil, taking advantage of her good heart
Or
- joining the bad forces for the sake of their friends' safety
2. Devina Mishra - lost of her family
Devina lost her mother when she was 12 due to the lethal illness. She barely got out of the grief and depression that hit her after such loss. She really values her family and friends, who are her second family. Any member of this circle is so precious singularly and as whole. The loss of anybody would break her, she would accuse herself of not protecting them enough. From very tough women she would become very vulnerable to dark forces dragging her sideways.
3. Dakarai Pretorius - loss of his siblings
TW: mental and physical abuse of parents
Dakarai is the oldest out of three kids of Regent Family of Pretorius. Their parents strictly planned the future of every single child. They hold their children close to the ground, never giving them choice, voice or freedom. Every rebellion or mistake equals punishment, either psychological or physical. Dakarai is the biggest rebel not only because he wants to, but he also wants to focus all parents viciousness on himself, living his siblings in better light. But he can't protect them forever, especially when he is out in the boarding school. That's why if anything happened to his sibling during his absence, he would definitely turn sides and avenge his siblings, which wouldn't be done in the reasonable or human way.
4. Lech Sokol - manipulation/gaslight or threat
Similar to Vieno, Lech isn't the person that would be easy to turn evil. He would definitely have to be pushed to the wall or manipulated to ever become a villain of the story. Definitely not because he is evil, he would go on evil side to safe his friends.
5. Nurah Sultan - influence of one side of her family
Royal family of Furidium, of which Nurah is a member, is really powerful. Some close members of her family crave even more power and need to rule further than only Furidium. If she had fallen into their circles at the young age, she would definitely be badly influenced and evil during the actual plot.
~~~~
Those are all my characters and what would turn them into villains!
Thank you once again @bloodlessheirbyjacques for wonderful ask!
So excited to be back!! ✨✨

Maybe smaller fields were the reason because??? Or maybe they didn't know how to defend back then (some defenders still aren't sure what their role is 👿) it's so funny with Borussia sjsvahahsjshsjsjs
Weirder shit happened so Ancelotti couching Brazil wouldn't surprise me. If Zidane wanted to stay in France then I'd have to respect it, you're right him leading PSG would be hilarious, but I want him back </3
It was serious for Ronaldo lmao, they should've just fought outside the stadium tbh
Arsenal vs Man Utd was jshsushsjwjsusjs Arsenal shooting 25 times and MU only 6?! Winning 3:2, only losing one game so far and only 2 draws? I'm really living in a different reality rn. Heeeeey why do you want me to suffer? Maybe I'll see Arsenal achieve something in CL too 😭😭😭 Chelsea and Liverpool stand up wtf, it's a bit funny ngl
Yeah the vibes definitely off... good riddance then, this is so fucked. Busquets go away challenge
Also William and Harry are very different so that's important to consider, maybe Charles and Harry just aren't compatible as people, both Charles and Will are more robotic to me skshsjhsjshsavavsnja
NCT's concerts are big strip clubs tbh 😭😅 A BIT overpriced if you ask me... SM needs to stop being a monster of capitalism for one second. Literally what I thought about when the Lisa contract thing came out, they're going the football route.
Right what were they thinking making GOT perform their song weeks before the release??? Most people watch that performance since the MV is just boring. Maybe Girls on Top need more appearances, have variety shows like SuperM, idk DO SOMETHING or end this shitshow
Welcome to the Go Eunhyuk simp nation! 🤌🏻❤
Idc about HP anymore, but yeah the first two movies were magical to me! Lmao that's the Wimpy kid? I haven't seen the movies I only read a few books. Right miss Blake is busy making kids 😭 btw I recently re-watched some of Gossip Girl, godddd what a mess, but I lived for the drama. I totally forgot Sebastian Stan was in it
I still have snakes wrapped around my leg permanently, Slytherin through and through lol
I can believe the Pique thing is true, because these people aren't even slick and when you go places you see and hear a lot of shit. I saw so many questionable things in London, lots of open secrets as well 🔫
Ailee changed her photo caption and CB got mad, but yeah girl.... should've just deleted the photo
At least Birmingham has Peaky Blinders, but what does Brampton have?
Baek.... I'll look away from that aunt comment. Hwa's niece biasing the demon line omg. The "Sehun" webtoon is still on-going and I'm reading it, but at what cost 😭
Seonghwa hasn't posted a selfie in ages, word on the street is blonde Hwa is gone I'M COMMITTING IF TRUE 🤧🤧🤧🤧 Mingi's hair is dark too... But as long as no scissors were involved... unless he cut his hair then I'm killing everyone eh, anyways like I said if I can't see blonde Hwa live then no euro Atinys can. Though there are so many ot8 black hair enthusiasts (couldn't be me)
But god, look at this hair here!!!
Kpop stans actually fighting irl is even more hilarious and pathetic 😭
HIM and yeah we can SEE your love for tank tops💀 - DV 💖

I don’t want to hear not even ONE single time that this world cup was rigged. Not even once. I will kill anyone saying that. Argentina champions of the temple, champions of resisting the stress, champions of suffering to the last second, it’s not even an exageration to say not one single country in the entire world has suffered matches so unfair like this one so many times, this is not the first time something like this happens to us, we always see brazil win 3-0 or germany  win 4-0 or france or spain win 7-1. That simply doesn’t happen with argentina,we could be winning 4-0 and still lose 4-5 in the last 5 minutes. it’s always suffering to the last seconds, it was the same in 2014 it was the same all the 3 world cup finals that we lost, losing in the last second with the most unfair stupid bullshit after dominating the entire gasme.- Today justice was made for once and I don’t want to hear one single person say we are dirty players when france were the once inventing penalties. I don’t want to hear one single person saying Messi is not the greatest of all times. This was for him, this was for Di Maria, this was for Maradona and Sabella who both dies and took Argentina to the finals in 2014 and neither of them could see argentina being champions of the world again and died after losing the most stupid ifnal ever in 2014. I don’t want a single european say South America football is garbage when we beat the champion of europe one year ago, and now we beat the 2018 champions of the world, South America is beautiful. South America football is the greatest ever. South America football is 2000 times more passionate than european football. Europe will never know what is like to play in so many diverse climate in such huge continent that one single country of ours is bigger tha neurope itself, Europe will never know what is like to play in stadium that don’t have the money that europe has. I don’t want to see a single european say that our players suck when you all buy our players like moths to the flame every single year leaving us with nothing. This  world cup is not only for Messi, is not only for the great argentinian people who have suffered a lot injustices and we still suffer crisis that no european could imagine how hard they are, this world cup is not only for Argentina, it was for South America to make a stand to say we STILL are here, we STILL are strong, and we STILL beat europe. Vamos Argentina te amo. Te Amo Argentina thank you for this passion thank you for all this suffering and crying and sobbing, I always loved you I still love you and I will love you for all eternity with all my heart, my life for this broken country that has a million flaws but that it is still the most beautiful in the entire world and I wouldn’t choose any other country to live and die for than my home. Thank for gifting me this moment, I will cherish tenderly to my last day until my heart stops fighting.

I have updated my "Animorphs in Italy" AU, because I hadn't considered some logistical issues around location. It's so interesting to think how much the series would change if it was set in a rather different culture, as continental Europe.
Italy, and Europe in general, is much more densely populated than either the US, Australia or Canada. Hence, to make sure that Ax and Tobia (by the way Tobia is a very unusual name in Italy, but it really suits him!) have a hideout place, we are limited to areas reasonably close to a national park. I think Amalfi would be a great choice, because of its mild weather that resembles California's, as well as its proximity to the seaside, to a regional park and to Naples, which is a major city.
Tobia will have to get stuck as a Common Buzzard (which is native to the area, phew!) and to put up with Rachele (Rachel) being a Golden Eagle. To fly around, it might be smart to be seagulls, but they're never smart about it.
Battle morphs will definitely have to come from a zoo, because there are no big wild animals in Italy. Ax (who gets to keep his Andalites name) will definitely not be able to morph shark if his dome crashes in the Mediterranean Sea. However, if he's lucky, he'll get a dolphin. On the bright side, Animorphs won't have to endure freezing water during their sea missions.
I have also realised that skunks don't exist in Europe, hence Visser 3 won't get sprayed. :(
Giacomo (Jake) and Tommaso (Tom) would definitely be playing football (as in soccer). Tommaso used to be star of the junior division of SSC Napoli, but he obviously gave it up as a controller. Similarly, Giacomo's hero is obviously Diego Maradona (instead of Michael Jordan).
The sharing should probably be a Catholic institution. Using a Catholic Church as a shady place has already be done on Midnight Mass, so apparently it's OK.
Yeerks definitely wouldn't be able to dig an underground pool, because of too many archaeological findings, so it would have to be an actual swimming facility, (somehow) linked to the Church.
Unfortunately, Don Enrico  (Hedrick Chapman) will have to be a priest, meaning that Melissa wouldn't exist :'(
The Davide (David) trilogy will be abozut preventing yeerks from infiltrating the Vatican.
There will have to be some occasions to visit Rome and Ax will be impressed by the Ancient Roman ruins, yet horrified hearing about the purpose of the Colosseum.
The Chee will definitely brag about having survived the eruption Mount Vesuvio in 79 AD. However, they'll also have to admit that they stood there while letting everyone in Pompeii and Herculaneum be killed. This non-interference policy will be a major plot line in one of the books.
Because it's the 90s, I'm afraid they're all likely to be ethnically white. However, Marco (not only does he get to keep his Italian name, but he's also one of the several Marcos in his class) will look very South Italian (olive skin, black hair and eyes), which pretty much as close as it gets to Canon.
Giacomo and Rachele can still be fair skin and blond. Not sure what to do about Camilla though (Cassie - Cassandra would be too weird).
Tobia has recently moved from his aunt's house near Venice. Because he speaks with a North-East accent, the others kids make fun of him.
Since classic anime were already an important part of pop culture in Italy, Rachele's nickname will be "Lady Oscar" (from The Rose of Versailles), instead of Xena.
Since in Italian schools students don't rotate classrooms, they're all classmates. Marco would be the one who always wants to sit in the back. However, since he's the class clown, teachers will make him sit in a first row desk.
The Animorphs will have less time for weekend battles, because they will have to go to school on Saturdays. However, they'll be more free in the afternoons . Instead of hanging out at the mall, they'll probably meet in a square in town or by the beach (in Summer). Also, they won't be eating hamburgers or food court junk food, yet they'll have street food and pizza.
Ax will have a great time in Italy because of food. He'll finally get to try pizza, pasta and gelato, which would make this AU better for him. Period. He would have difficulties eating spaghetti in a civilised manner, and will complain about forks being inefficient for the purpose. He might even dare to suggest that using a spoon makes it more convenient.
Ax would also piss off the locals by ordering cappuccino after 11am. To put a remedy on it,  Giacomo will have to introduce him as his British cousin.
Ax' favourite food will be tiramisù, and he'll get salmonella at least once for buying it from cheap places.
There will be no school dances, only informal house parties. Hence, Giacomo Rachele and Camilla will likely be the only ones invited. Once they reach liceo (high school), things will change and they'll all crush the parties, as adults won't be supervising. Parties on the beach can also be featured. At that point, parties might probably involve alcohol, so we'll get to see drunk Ax (yay!). There will also be some drama about drunk Ax being unable to Demorph.
In MM3, Visser 4 will try to change the Gallic Wars by murdering Julius Caesar (as his host was obsessed with the last canto of Dante's Inferno), a battle with Garibaldi during Italian Risorgimento, and he'll go to the the University of Pisa to kill Galileo Gailiei (though another option is the Medici court to kill Leonardo Da Vinci). Instead of D day, the final battle would have to be the battle of Anzio,  the town where the Allies landed in 1944. However, since the previous events were changed, Italy as a country wouldn't probably exist at all by that point.
Bless.

What do you think of italy nt decision of not kneeling before the next match?
Nice question, I won't be brief (summary in the tags).
I answer you on the basis of the declarations before the final press conference before the match.
I'd tell you I'm disappointed, but I won't because I'm Italian and I know how a basic Italian thinks and acts.
The point is: if you're not racist, even if you don't believe that a little gesture or a sign can't help to fight for the cause, you can by the way showing your support to black people by doing that gesture. It costs you nothing.
It's simple. I'm not racist, so if they say look there's this thing of kneeling to show support, I honestly WANT to do it, and I want it not because other teams are doing it nor my club and mates are imposing it to me. I want to do it because I FEEL that. If you don't feel that, if you don't want to instinctively join, if you feel it like a wrong act, if you're annoyed by it, or simply if you don't understand the meaning, you should consider being racist.
Now, Italy decided this way today, precisely the footballers of the national team decided that. Fine, I had no expectations. Here football is a sort of religion, so the NT represents exactly the average Italian person (racist, homophobic, sexist).
However, they say this decision was made to avoid criticism (because in the last match only a few players knelt, so there was a bit of confusion). The fact is that there are people who are notablely racist in Italian national team, like Bonucci (I don't want to remind you when he said Moise Kean deserved racist chants because "it was 50% his fault"), and so you can imagine that, if this is the real reason, they unanimously chose not to kneel simply to "cover" footballers like him, who are against this kind of initiatives not because they are useless, but because they are essentially pro equal rights. And this is shameful not just for the real racist ones in this team, but also for the others. So I won't justify NO ONE, if the final decision will be this one.
They are all men, they can decide and speak for themselves. If anyone of them has expressed the desire to kneel, they shouldn't have adapted to the majority.
Excluding the fact that supporting BLM does not mean having a defined political orientation (yes, you're just a good person), football is one of the most effective means to convey such a message. Football is the most followed sport. Ronaldo can cause around 4 billion in damages to Coca-Cola through a simple gesture...
Everyone likes football, even people who don't like it become fans when it's time to support the NT, and people can and should also be educated through kicking a ball. A sport can absolutely teach and influence.
Maradona "avenged" Argentines killed during the Falklands War by scoring a hand goal against England. Bruno Neri opposed fascism by going against the imposition of the Roman salute (picture below).
Tumblr media
Football, or better, Sports, are absolutely bonded to politics. Bonded to social/political/cultural initiatives.
Finally, correct me if I'm wrong but I think it is the first gesture in favor of this topic wanted by the "people" and not by associations or the sponsors or the uefa or whoever rules the european football. So, it's almost funny to me to see all this controversy over a kneel when during club matches, football players have given their consent to fighting racism and violence against women by some gestures (at this point, I have to guess they were forced to do so).

Maybe they're right: kneeling won't end racism; Neuer wearing the rainbow armband didn't destroy homophobia. But I'm pretty sure an armband or a lipstick on a face can't destroy racism and violence on women too, but it means a LOT anyways. So what's the difference between this and kneeling? I would like to know it from the players themselves. All.

A Finnish hunter, an Italian monk, an English chemist and a Scottish Inventor, walk into a bar. And that essentially sums up the beginning of "The Book of Blood." A JoJo DND campaign created by Roxiepro & KochokachowArt, set in 1890. It takes elements from Phantom Blood and Steel Ball Run, combines them, and flips everything on its head. And the characters played through are "Grandiosa" (P0M) A hunter from Finland who's hired by a Ghost like figure named Dremantis, to find and kill a rogue vampire named "Ozzy Osbourne." Grandiosa will not come out of this job the same man, emotionally or physically. "Lunasar" (Nove) A hamon monk with a stand "Shine on you." They have been discharged by the hamon order, and now go around scamming people with their stand's abilities. They do not remember their life before the monks, and are trying to find purpose. Though their true history, runs thicker then plasma, as they will find. "Jack" (Me) is a Scottish drunkard inventor, who's also a "cyborg", with the ability to extend his legs 10 feet into the air, and turn his hands into weapons. He cannot recall his life prior to 10 years ago. And spends his time creating things in a bar. Jack is also incredibly prone to mood swings. He is either oblivious, joyful, or out to kill. He's never one emotion for very long. What Jack's past reveals, will have you doubting he's a man at all, you could say he's a monster in some ways. "Robin Tanks" (ZB4) A gentle giant who's taken after his father "Chris Rhodes", and became a Chemist. He is out to find his fathers killer and bring them to justice, for him, Chris, and his family. Robin is the voice of reason in the group, and when it comes to a fight, he will never take an enemies life. He later develops a stand named "Cat's in the cradle." Which allows him to fuse things together, a very useful ability for many reasons. "Maradona" I.E "Homsie" (P0M) is Grandiosa's horse, and also has a stand named "Samsara". Which allows them to manipulate water. They are incredibly sassy. And lastly Althea (Kochow) A spin user who uses arrows. She never knew her father growing up. And joins the group late into their journey, so they can help to save her mother. These 6 strangers will battle vampires of insane proportions, and abilities. And befriend some along the way. As well as discover, they each are connected to each other, in more ways then any of them could ever realize. This is Campaign 1, the Book of Blood! Please reblog if you can!

I’m so fucking pissed right now and I need to vent cause I’m gonna implode if I don’t. (I will be considerate and do it under the so y’all can ignore ;) )
I’m so fucking angry! Listen, I’m not a football fan, I never was, I don’t understand sports but I get it, Maradona was an icon or whatever, there’s many people who admired him and loved him and what not. But that’s fucking enough! The dude was a football player, I don’t give a fuck how good he was, he played a sport. One of the billion sports that are out there, and it wasn’t even the only one who played, football is a team sport.
I can be angry (and I am) about the amount of money football players earn for doing nothing for a few years, while there are doctors, teachers, cientists, you know, people who actually do something for the world, who have to fight for every fucking cent they get paid.
And I can be angry (and I am) about how Maradon’s death is in every news program on tv since this morning (cause they interrupted the entire schedule just to put news programs today). Cause suddenly today there’s no more corruption, or deaths, or roberies, nobody got killed, kidnapped or anything, suddenly the world is at peace... Nothing but this dead due matters today...
But what makes me the absolute angriest, is the amount of people that are getting together to “honour his death” and nobody, or maybe 3 people, are wearing masks, nobody is keeping their distance, people who haven’t seen eachother in months are hugging, and sharing food and drinks like there isn’t a fucking pandemic still happening!! The entire year we’ve been seeing people dying of covid who couldn’t say goodbye to their families. There were people who couldn’t come back to the country cause when this whole thing started they were abroad. We had people who couldn’t get to their own fucking house cause the police was keeping them outside the province they were from. For weeks, there was on the news a case of a family with a 6 year old child who were sleeping outside, in the fucking highway cause the police didn’t let them go into their province cause they had to “wait for tests”, and they were, in the middle of fucking winter, they were sleeping on the grass, until a farmer who had some land there let them stay in his barn or shed, or whatever it was. They were there for months!
There was another case of a girl, who was living in another province from her father, who begged for weeks (if not months) to the authorities, to let her visit her father cause he was dying of covid. And when they finally let her, she was like 4 days late. Her father died completely alone because some assholes couldn’t get the tests and paperwork or whatever the fuck they needed to let the poor girl see her father one last time.
Without going too far back, yesterday, they were talking about a poor little girl, who came home with her family from chemiotherapy, hurting all over, crying, just wanting rest in her own bed, and the poplice didn’t let them go through. The father had to carry her on his arms to go to, pretty much beg, the police to let them get to their house.
But now one famous dude dies and the entire nation has forgotten about everything that happened this year, all the people they denied one last goodbye to their loved ones. And thousands of people are given free passes to get together for a guy they didn’t even know!
It breaks my heart and it makes me so so angry.

like your point about football was already lacking integrity (but to be clear like you i also hate the idea of a super league). it is kind of ironic that everyone is now finally complaining about how "greed has killed football." brazil is arguably the footballing capitol of the world. ask people about the footballing greats the answer: pele, maradona, messi. and yet the "greatest" leagues in the world happen to be in europe. greed colonized the sport a long time ago
yes 100%. it’s just that now, the greed and hunger for money has like broken the camels back cos whats happening to football now would make it unrecognisable

Patriarchy and Pop Punk
Written by Theresa Cambe. Graphic by James N Grey
Tumblr media
Yes, misogyny exists in almost every genre of music. Rap and country are usually at the forefront of this conversation, however, today we’re going to dive into the misogyny in pop punk. Lets face it, the misogyny is just covered up with layers of nice-guy, sad boy introspection but deserves the criticism just like everyone else. Just because a man holding a guitar gets vulnerable for a second, it doesn’t mean he is exempt from possessing misogynistic tendencies.
Despite the sexism built into this genre, I am more than guilty of partaking in my fair share of pop punk music. I would try to be at every State Champs, Neck Deep, Real Friends, The Story So Far, and every band of the sorts in between, concerts in Southern California between the ages of 14-16. I finger pointed and yelled those angsty lyrics right back at the bands while crowd surfing towards the stage in whatever sweaty venue in LA they happened to be playing at the time. I bought the merch, I hung their posters up in my room, I reblogged their concert pictures on Tumblr, I was about it. And trust me, “No Good” by Knuckle Puck could come on shuffle again and have me passionately screaming the lyrics while driving alone in my car around my god forsaken hometown (but I love my hometown, contrary to the popular sentiment). However now, I am more conscious of its problems.
I think this is the case for many other non-male enjoyers of this music when they also recognize its misogyny. Of course, there is nothing wrong with enjoying pop punk nor do I think enjoying this music makes you a bad person or inherently anti-feminist. A good portion of the demographic for these bands are women. With this large and important part of the fan base, we should start considering the safety of the environments and attitudes they create.
The attitude of misogyny and objectification is built into the foundation of pop punk. It is apparent in whichever “wave” of pop punk you want to point to. Early Blink 182 and All Time Low music videos had women in them to be silent sexual objects parading around the rock star band. There’s Weezer’s infamous sexist, nerd-rock anthems. “Thank God for Girls” sings “Called upon to employ your testosterone / In a battle for supremacy and access to females glued to the TV”. In a Genius lyric annotation of the song, lead singer of the band, Rivers Cuomo himself wrote “I’m so jealous of the hooker-uppers. Seems like it’s so easy to get laid now. All these good looking athletic guys are getting so much free sex. It kills me. Such a bummer. Such a bummer. To be evaluated by women. To be graded. To be rated. Where do I stand? How big? How strong? How enduring? How energetic? How inventive? So sad that it comes to this. So sad. It IS a competition and I AM being compared”. It is really quite ironic that Cuomo writes this but in the same breath has lyrics “The thing I finally found with these other girls in town / She got hot, and they did not” from the song “The Girl Got Hot” and also “You come like a dog when I ring your bell / I got the money and I got the fame / You got the hots to ride on my plane” from the song “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”. Then there’s also every song on the album Pinkerton that we don’t have time to get into. Even if this self-deprecating behavior is no surprise from Cuomo, it’s concerning and rooted in some serious hate. If you want to argue that it's all satire, they’re still weird thoughts to have.
I can go on about these recurring lyrical themes. For example, there is The Story So Far’s song “Roam” with the lyrics “I know where you’ve been, you’re ruining men, never again will I let someone in”. And the classic from “Mt Diablo” that sings “Do you look at yourself straight in the eyes and think about who you let between your thighs?”. Then there’s FIDLAR’s song “Whore” which as we can expect from the title, says “Why did you go betray me? / You’re such a whore”. Then there’s the mess of “Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis'' by the band Brand New, which writes “I got desperate desires and unadmirable plans / My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent / Bring you back to the bar / Get you out of the cold / My sober straight face gets you out of your clothes.” Look into any corner of pop punk and you’ll find these questionable attitudes, but I digress.
These men play the nice guys and aim at making you believe he is the protagonist in every situation. The commonality between all these artists is that they obsess and fantasize over a girl then turn completely sour once rejects them or leaves a relationship. They want a “cool girl” to listen to underground music and really comfort their sad, misunderstood selves but won’t allow them to make a decision outside of his own benefit. Because god forbid these women have their own thoughts and exercise their own actions! Their fantasy is essentially a manic pixie dream girl that doesn’t speak or act out against anything. These men beg to be at the center, and get aggressive when they aren’t.
This is not to be confused with writing a sad song after you got broken up with or hurt by someone in a relationship. This is also not to say that all women are exempt from having toxic behaviors or from being written about. The guise of the patriarchy also harms those it seeks to benefit and therefore enforces rules of masculinity that restricts men from expressing their frustrations and emotions. I believe that writing music about unrequited love or difficult feelings is a healthy way to combat these roles. However, there is a major difference between processing rejection and hating women for rejecting you, which is an area many of these men seem to blur together.
I still have love for these bands and this genre. I can still go to their shows and have the time of my life, easily. But it wasn’t until I got a little older and more realized with my femininity did I revisit these songs and wake up to the fact that it might have not always been in my favor . I was probably too young to notice or care and was distracted by the catchy, yelly tone and how fun it was to jump around to that I never really sat with what some of the lyrics really meant. It was a major factor in my own internalized misogyny back when I was in the throes of it all. I didn’t want to be like those awful girls that these pop punk dudes kept singing about. They were always described in such a terrible way, that all they do is betray and backstab people. They wanted a “cool girl” to understand them and not be like them. So I rejected femininity and disliked other girls as if I’m in this sort of competition for the sad band dude’s attention. I was idolizing these men whose music mainly centered around their disdain for the women they had experiences with so much that it stuck in my brain that I shouldn’t be like them, that I should be appeasing these people I look up to. But I’ve grown to realize that I was only hearing one side of the story. It was a straight white man’s voice constantly, no one else. This one sided narrative created a false perception of reality, one rooted in a sad boy victim complex, that women are the enemy that shouldn’t be trusted because they couldn’t fit the weird male fantasy these dudes possess. Rarely are women represented in this music except through the lens of a man, which as we saw is almost always disdainful or as a character rather than a fully realized and autonomous person. Women are portrayed as commodities to obtain. It alters our perception of reality.
But with most things you love, you want to see them get better. This music has a fond place in my heart and signifies a really fun time in my life where I found my love for music and concerts. But the genre and the spaces it creates has its own set of problems that I want to see improve.
We have to realize that music has a greater impact on culture. The attitudes that create the genre of pop punk affects the audience that consumes it. The one-sided narrative they build implants harmful ideas about relationships and dynamics into their young fans, as it did to me. Regardless if you want to say lyrics are just lyrics and are meant not to be taken so seriously, artists have so much influence on their fans. They are perpetuating the nice guy narrative that men are owed something from women. And sometimes we unfortunately see this point of view reflected in these band member’s actions. The accusations against them for sexual assault, grooming, and manipulation of young girls runs rampant in these spaces and remains to do so. They abuse their positions of power and influence. Using self-pity in songs does not excuse the shitty things you do.

Election/Transition news:
The Trump administration gave in and started the transition process, and Trump himself said he would concede if the Electoral College chooses Biden. Although the race has been called by all news organizations, it hasn't formally declared Biden the winner (the electors vote on December 14th and the official count is January 6th). (NYT, CNN, AP)
Biden announced more names for his team: Former Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken for Secretary of State, Former Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen for Secretary of Secretary, former Deputy Secretary of HS Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of HS, former Deputy National Security Advisor Avril Haines for Director of National Intelligence, Jake Sullivan for National Security Advisor, and longtime diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield for UN ambassador. A lot of these people are from the Obama administration. (NYT)
There's a lot going on on the state level about election results, so I'll give some highlights: Milwaukee County completed its recount at the Trump campaign's behest, and Biden's win increased. Pennsylvania certified its results, a state judge told them to stop, and then a state appeals overturned that and said to certify it. I tried to keep on top of what's going on in Michigan, but it's very confusing since some counties certified and then reneged and then re-certified, but I think the state as a whole has certified for Biden. (Washington Times, NPR, CBS)
Republicans flipped four more seats for the House, making a net gain of nine. We're still waiting on the results of seven more seats, but with the current count the Democrats are still in control. Eyes are still on Georgia for their Senate runoff on January 5th because the winners decide who controls the Senate. (NYT, WSJ)
Corona news:
Current cases are ~62M, current deaths are ~1.4M. (Worldometer)
AstraZeneca says its vaccine is 63-90% effective (depending on how it's administered), however it's not admitting there were mistakes during the testing process and more time would be needed. (NYT)
Russia announced that its Sputnik V vaccine will be produced in Brazil, China, South Korea, and mostly in India. They say it's 95% effective, but the clinical trial was never completed. (Die Welle, NYT)
The FDA authorized the experimental antibody treatment given to Trump when he was hospitalized for COVID. (Washington Post)
The US Supreme Court struck down NYS' restriction on attendance at places of worship, partly because it allowed businesses to stay open in the same areas and it did not take into account the size of the facility. (SCOTUS Blog)
Unemployment claims rose to 778K last week. (WSJ)
Australia's largest airline, Qantas, says it will require passengers traveling internationally to prove they have been vaccinated. It's uncertain whether the industry as a whole will embrace this. (CBS)
Other news:
There are reports that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Secretary of State Pompeo met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, although Saudi Arabia is denying it and Israel is making no comment, possibly because King Salman wasn't informed of it. No normalization or anything came of it naturally, but it's still a major diplomatic feat. (Middle East Eye)
A top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated near Tehran, and a few of his ambushers were also killed. Iran believes Israel was involved. (Al Jazeera)
Believe it or not, the G20 summit meeting happened during all of this, but little was accomplished. (NYT)
Fighting continues in Ethiopia with government forces readying to attack the Tigrayan capital, Mekelle. Meanwhile refugee camps across the border in the Sudan have swelled. (Al Jazeera)
Trump pardoned Michael Flynn. (NPR)
Famous soccer player Diego Maradona died at age 60 from a heart attack, and former NYC mayor David Dinkins died at age 93. (NYT)

tell us those thrid world country scary stories
This isn’t even the worst third-world country shit, this is like easy third-world country mode: Whenever you leave your house you never know for sure if you’ll come back, especially if you’re a woman ‘cause you could get kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Criminals here really don’t give a fuck and they’ll shoot you even if you give them all the money and stuff you carry with you. Even at home, you can’t feel 100% sure because at any time a random group of robbers could enter your home even if you have a guard dog or a security system. These people fear nothing, they’ll kill you and your dog without even thinking it twice because it doesn’t really matter to them, even if they get caught they’ll get a slap on the wrist, maybe be detained for 24hrs at max, and then they’re free and these criminals reproduce quicker than covid spread because they see how easy it is to commit crimes here so why wouldn’t they have a go at it? People without jobs have lots of kids and then send them to beg for money in the streets, they have even more children because the government is meant to aid them and pay them bonuses for each kid which you know, is meant to be used for the kid and to send them to school but that’s not what they used it for, the government could surely offer them jobs as well so they could generate their own money but politicians won’t do that because they have their own kids or family members who don’t want to look for a job for themselves so they send their lazy family and friends to do these state labor jobs that don’t really require any particular school background or anything and would be great for all of those who couldn’t afford school when they were younger but no, let’s give these jobs to parasites and give measly bonuses to the other people so they are content.
At the beginning of covid, there was this case of a prison that started a riot, because the poor murderers and rapists were sad they couldn’t see their families and didn’t want to be trapped together and catch the virus. Meanwhile, there were lots of people with families in other provinces who couldn’t go visit their sick relatives at hospitals or even make the proper funeral arrangements for those who passed and couldn’t say their goodbyes to, because they weren’t allowed to leave their own houses/provinces. So, naturally, you would say fuck you to the criminals because if an innocent person cannot bury their own parents or kids because of quarantine why the fuck would you set free people who damaged others? Well, the government didn’t think so and they said “okay, you all murdered and raped but you deserve to go home until the pandemic ends, I trust you’ll all stay at your houses and don’t commit any more crimes” and let them out of the prison.
Another fun thing was the death of Maradona, a famous football player, and terrible person. He died in the middle of the pandemic and everyone including the president was so sad their favorite misogynist piece of shit died that our president said “Hey, let’s have his funeral at the government house, placed reserved for definitely not this kind of events and let's allow abso-fucking-lutely anyone to come to mourn their favorite dipshit :)” and they fucking did. They had the gall to tell everyone to stay home a month ago, to prohibit families to get together when they had to mourn the deaths of their sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, but then this fucker dies and everyone from every province of the country is allowed to gather without masks or any kind of security protocol. They really did that. And then they tell normal people and not stupid motherfuckers who think it’s normal to gather to mourn a stupid football player (who said he’d spit in the face of (one of his many) illegitimate child if he ever saw him) to keep social distance and wear masks as if they didn’t just throw the most massive covid party of the year? They literally blame us all for the covid cases not decreasing when they did.fucking.that.
Oh, did I mention politicians thought the pandemic was a great moment to increase their own salaries for no fucking reason instead of, I don’t know, increasing sanity funds? The salaries of health professionals or essential works? Nah, politicians need it more.
And like I tell you, this is the easy third-world country mode, I don’t even wanna go into femicides or political corruption because I get mad.

Super fun list/idea I look forward to. I love end-of-year lists and even end of decade lists and checking to see what I missed or completely forgot about.
Some stuff I didn’t like, am lukewarm about. But most is right on and worth checking out.
Glad they added: the Bodega Boys soundboard (Desus and Mero). Some segments on Desus and Mero this year were the funniest things I watched...Ryen Russillo’s ‘Worst Year ever’ segment. Forgot about that one. Relatable.
Things I’d add to the list... Limited series that are really good (in order): When They See Us (particularly Jharrell Jerome’); Unbelievable; Chernobyl; the Loudest Voice; Mrs Fletcher
Late add: ‘Don’t Fuck with Cats: the Hunt for the Internet Cat Killer’ Still need to check out: ‘Fosse/Verdon’; ‘Looking for Alaska’; ‘Good Omens’
Late Night: ‘Desus and Mero’-kind of mentioned with the Bodega Boys soundboard. Some segments were the hardest I’ve laughed this year. Maybe the ad for the South Carolina sheriff was the best moment? And the hilarious game show moment with Jimmy Fallon/Charlize Theron and the Taylor Swift ‘long back’ moment that got them death threats from Swift fans.
Without fail, I introduce anybody to Desus and Mero or even just Mero’s laugh-and they will enjoy it. They are so naturally funny/likable and got great chemistry/riffing.
TV Series: ‘Sex Education’. Some ‘Derry Girls’. Moments: Sydney Sweeney’s boobies on ‘Euphoria’. That show is pretty ridiculous/dumb at times and basically feels like a hysterically paranoid made-up nightmare of what high school is like. But it has good female performances you can’t look away from. The dudes? not so much. Documentaries (no order): ‘the Ted Bundy Tapes’, ‘Finding Neverland’ (Michael Jackson sexual abuse of kids); ‘I Love You Now Die’ (local in Massachusetts with inducing someone to commit suicide case), ‘‘‘the Inventor’ (Theranos) ‘American Factory’; ‘Knocking Down the House’ (AOC)
Enjoyed a lot of these to varying degrees. Heard the Maradona doc was good.
Comedy Specials:  -Bill Burr-’Paper Tiger’-favorite stand-up comic. Particularly his bit 54 minutes in. I still think he’s left out his best bits 3 specials in a row now (the anti respecting the troops makes sense as to why he left it out/didn’t land in London and why) -Gary Gulman-’the Great Depresh’-doc didn’t totally work for me, but there’s some great moments from a comic I’ve always liked/didn’t know what he was going through. -Dave Chappelle -got a lot of flack, but it was still funny. -Mike Birbiglia-’the New One’-comic from my town (Shrewsbury MA). He does ready-made Broadway/Off-Broadway one-man acts (not so much comedy specials). He’s not a favorite comic in that I don’t think he’s as naturally or consistently funny as a lot of the guys I like on podcasts; that’s not his forte. But if he has an act, he’ll deliver and usually get better with it. -Anthony Jeselnik-’Fire in the Maternity Ward’ Comedy album -Joe DeRosa-’I Go To Atlanta All the Time’ -may not pop into my head as a favorite comic, but he reliably releases some of my favorite comedy albums.
Podcasts -’the Dollop’: ‘Ronald Reagan part 1 & 2′ with Patton Oswalt. Lot of episodes are hit-or-miss, but when it’s on? It’s damn good/funny/unbelievable. I wish they had a comedy production studios for Dollop movies/TV/shorts.
I listen to an ungodly amount of podcasts, but I can’t think of standout moments/episodes beyond the above one. I think Frotcast will release a Best of the year oepisode soon and it might deliver.
Internet moments -the short/angry Bagel Boss guy losing his shit (and other videos of the guy being a douche) -Megan McCain being dunked on. Probably ‘You were at my wedding denise’ was the highlight but it was never-ending from an all-time dumb person/faildaughter of a shitty politician. You could probably also add other shitty Republicans/conservative thinkers. Getting shit on online and losing the culture wars forever and always is the least/best we can do in these shit times. They will never have that and it irks them no matter how much they say it doesn’t. That’s history and being on the wrong side. SNL -Adam Sandler’s SNL comeback/tribute to Chris Farley. He did it on his really good Netflix comedy special but was more touching here and a genuine moment.
SNL mostly sucks and I hate-watch it. Has a collection of funny people but they fail to do anything with it.
Need to check out: Uncut Gems; Little Women; Star Wars; end of ‘Legion’ (4 episodes behind/wasn't enjoying the last season and a half. The final ‘Mr Robot’. episode on Sunday. 1 episode into ‘the Witcher’ and so far it’s pretty stupid and Henry Cavill’s voice is unintentionally funny. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MY PERSONAL FAVES.... TV: Succession/Fleabag/Watchmen DISAPPOINTING ALL-TIME GREAT END: Game of Thrones GREAT: When They See Us; Unbelievable; Chernobyl VERY GOOD/HIGH HIGHS: Barry; Brockmire; Derry Girls; Euphoria; Pen15; Sex Education FAVORITE SHOWS I LOVE BUT NOT TOTALLY STANDOUT SEASONS: Big Mouth; Rick and Morty; Veep OKAY: Dark; Russian Doll HALF-WATCH/MEH: All-American; Emergence; Jack Ryan; Living With Yourself; the Mandalorian; Stumptown; True Detective; Warrior NOT GOOD BUT I WATCH: Shameless ONCE GREAT NOW MIGHT NEED TO END: GLOW; Killing Eve; Luther; Stranger Things NOT VERY GOOD/ENDED: Big Little Lies; Silicon Valley GAVE UP ON: Riverdale
STILL NEED TO CHECK OUT/CATCH UP BUT ARE GOOD/QUALITY: Bosch; Broad City; Brooklyn 99; Catastrophe; Expanse; Good Place; It’s Always Sunny; Letterkenny; Other Two; Ramy; Schitt’s Creek MOVIE:  TOP TIER FAVORITES: 1) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2) Uncut Gems SECOND TIER FAVES: 3) Little Women 4) Knives Out 5) Midsommer 6) Parasite 7) Marriage Story THIRD TIER: 8) John Wick III 9) the Irishman 10) Us 11) Shazam! UNDERRATED: 12) Ready or Not

Queen's first trip to South America, told by Freddie Mercury
Tumblr media
There is no doubt that this image is the one that has turned the world over and over again, the classic photo of Freddie Mercury with Diego Armando Maradona and Queen, in what is one of the great milestones in the history of rock, because in plenary sessions In the eighties it was not at all easy for a band of its caliber to land in South American lands, something that set an important precedent and opened the doors for more large groups to arrive, unfortunately and because of the dictatorship that was lived in Chile, primarily Brazil and Argentina, as Queen did.
In that concert, Diego Maradona took the stage and dedicated a few words to Freddie Mercury. “Thanks to Freddie and the Queen for making me so happy. And now, another bites the dust, ” said the ‘10’ Argentine, in a fact that brought some problems, because shortly after the Falklands War between Argentina and England broke out.
For Freddie and the band it was vital to arrive in South America, it was something they wanted and that thanks to their interest was given. “We wanted to play where rock music had never been played before,” says Freddie. “I knew a lot about Argentina, but I never imagined that we were so popular there. I was amazed by the country’s reaction to our visit, we were all very nervous, because we had no right to automatically wait for a big welcome in unfamiliar territory. I do not think they would have seen such an ambitious show before, with all the lights and effects we use”.
“A lot of journalists came from all over the world to see us play in Argentina and Brazil. In Sao Paulo, we played for 120,000 people one night and for 130,000 the following night. Nobody had ever done it before, and it was something completely new to the.The Argentinian government was worried that, with such a vast audience, the issue would take on a political aspect, and they begged me not to sing "Do not Cry For Me Argentina”. They had the Death Squad there to protect us, the harsh police force that actually kills people at the slightest chance, in case the crowd goes wild”.
“In fact they took us from one place to another in armored vehicles that were normally used in the riots. Dear ones, it was the most exciting part of all. There were six police motorbikes roaring in front of us, sorting and zigzagging through the crowd and traffic like in an exhibition. The van had holes in the side to put their weapons; there we were, leaving the stadium ostentatiously and spectacularly. It was fantastic”.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND September 20, 2019  - VILLAINS, BLOODLINE, DOWNTON ABBEY, AD ASTRA, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD
It’s hard to believe that September is almost over, and we’re just sailing through the September festival season with the New York Film Festival starting (for real) next week.  There are three wide releases, but I will only have seen one of them before writing this, so instead, I’ll talk about a couple genre movies opening Friday, both of which played at Lincoln Center’s “Scary Movies XII” last month.
Tumblr media
I remember writing quite extensively about VILLAINS (Alter/Gunpowder and Sky) when I was over at the Tracking Board, mainly about the casting of Bill Skarsgard from It, Maika Monroe from It Follows, as well as Jeffrey Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick. It’s the new movie from Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who directed the horror sequel The Stakelander and have written a pretty amazing comedy-thriller twist on the home invasion movie. Skarsgard and Monroe play a young couple who hide out in a seemingly abandoned house after robbing a store. They soon learn that not only is it not abandoned, but there is a young girl chained in the basement. The owners of the home, played by Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan, then return and things go sideways for the young couple as they find that maybe their petty crimes make them the good guys in this scenario.  Villains is getting a fairly hearty release into roughly 100 theaters across the country, so check your listings to see if/where it will be playing near you. (It mainly seems to be playing in Regal theaters across the country.)
Tumblr media
Another interesting genre film opening Friday is Henry Jacobson’s psychological thriller BLOODLINE (Momentum Pictures), starring Seann William Scott as Evan, a high school social worker with a secret – he’s also a serial killer who tries to help his patients by ridding them of their issues. Evan is also experiencing a new baby with his wife, which might keep him from his killing habits, except that his mother (Dale Dickey) has shown up to help them, and she was the one who taught him his ways. This is a really dark and gory film that I quite enjoyed in a similar way as some of my favorite serial killer thrillers, from Hitchcock’s Psychoto Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and others. It honestly can’t be a better time for this with all the true crime television we’re getting, and I was pretty blown away by Scott’s performance in this. Bloodlineisplaying at the IFC Center for Friday and Saturday late night screenings and probably will be available On Demand as well.
You can read my interview with Seann William Scott and the directors of VILLAINS over at The Beat, the latter posting Friday.
Tumblr media
The one wide release I have seen this weekend is Focus Features’ DOWNTOWN ABBEY, a continuation of the PBS series with an absolutely amazing British cast that includes Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton and so many more that I won’t name all of them. I feel that I’m not the best person to properly review the movie since I haven’t seen a second of the series, but I generally liked what I saw and might give it a look if I can find a good streaming source on which to binge it. I actually liked the movie enough to recommend it without having any previous knowledge of the series.
Probably my biggest disappointment of this week is that I didn’t have a chance to see James Gray’s AD ASTRA (20thCentury Fox), starring Brad Pitt, before Thursday night, because I wasn’t able to get to the press screening. It’s been one of my more anticipated movies of the year, mainly because I generally love outer space movies, but I also have been interested in seeing what Gray and Pitt do with the material, especially with such a great supporting cast.
Another movie that I only got to see just before this column posts is Sylvester Stallone’s RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (Lionsgate), which I reviewed over at The Beat. I had very few expectations for the movie, as I’ve never been a huge Rambo fan. I’m not sure why, but I guess I just never got into the Rah! Rah! USA! Stuff that permeated the United States in the ‘80s, and I was more into music than movies at the time. Reading my review, it’s obvious that Stallone’s latest attempt to revive a franchise didn’t do much for me.
You can read what I think of the above’s box office prospects over at The Beat, as well.
LIMITED RELEASES
I’m not quite sure why there are so many limited releases this weekend –I count almost 30 (!!!!) over on Rotten Tomatoes– but I’ll see what I can get to this week since I’m already a little behind. If you missed, Rob Zombie’s 3 FROM HELL on Monday and Tuesday night and more importantly, missed my scathing review of it over at The Beat, well, then you’ve missed it since this column is posting after it played its last night before its blu-ray release next month. Sorry!
Tumblr media
A fantastic documentary opening at the Metrograph this week is Jacqueline Olive’s directorial debut ALWAYS IN SEASON (Multitude Films), a stirring film about the history of lynching, circling around the death of 17-year-old Lennon Lacy from Bladenboro, North Carolina, which is ruled as a suicide but his mother Claudia is convince that her son was lynched. Olive’s powerful film provides a background for how lynching became so prevalent in the early part of the 20thCentury, including an eerie annual reenactment by the town of Monroe, Georgia that wants to make sure that the county’s atrocities aren’t forgiven or forgotten.  Narrated by Danny Glover, Olive’s directorial debut is powerful and moving and a film that must not be missed – maybe it’s no surprise that it won a Special Jury prize at Sundance Film Festival for “Moral Urgency” earlier this year. I was pretty shaken up when I saw it at this year’s Oxford Film Festival.
The Metrograph is also screening two National Geographic shorts, Alexander A. Mora’s The Night Crawlers and Orlando von Einsiedel’sLost and Found, over the next week. The Night Crawlers looks at a group of Filipino journalists known as the “Manila Nightcrawlers” who seek to expose the truth about President Duterte’s war on drugs and the number of people who lost their lives over it. Lost and Foundi s a new doc short from the director of the Netflix doc The White Helmets which looks at the Myanmar’s ethnic violence against the Rohingya people through the eyes of a man in a refugee camp seeking to reunite children with parents.
Japanese animation house Studio TRIGGER’s first feature film PROMARE (GKIDS) will get a limited release on Friday, following Fathom Events showings on Tuesday (already passed) and Thursday (tonight). It will then be opening in New York at the Metrograph and AMC Empire on Friday for a one-week run. It’s an apocalyptic sci-fi thriller set in a world thirty years after a race of flame-wielding mutant beings called the Burnish set half the world on fire an the battle between the anti-Burnish Burning Rescue and Lio Fotia, leader of the aggressive new “Mad Burnish” mutants.
Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and its follow-up Youth, returns with LORO (Sundance Selects), about a young hustler named Sergio (Riccardo Scamarcio) managing an escort service who sets his sights on the egotistical billionaire Italian ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (Tony Servillo) who is trying to bribe his way back into power. It will open at the IFC Center Friday.
A couple other docs opening this weekend, the first two opening at New York’s Film Forum…
Now playing is Hassan Fazili’s Midnight Traveler (Oscilloscope) about how the filmmaker received death threats from the Taliban in 2015 for running Kabul, Afghanistan’s Art Café, a progressive meeting place, so he, his wife and two young daughters must travel 3,500 miles over 3 years across four countries to get to Hungary, a journey documented via mobile phone cameras. It will open in L.A. on October 4.
Then on Friday, there’s Matt Tyrnauer’s new film WHERE’S MY ROY COHN? (Sony Pictures Classics) looks at the lawyer and power broker who was part of Joe McCarthy’s anti-Communist activities and who was pivotal in molding a young Queens developer named Donald Trump. I wanted to like this movie more because Roy Cohn is such an interesting human being in such a despicable way, but this doc really didn’t do much for me.
Opening in New York (Cinema Village) and L.A. (Laemmle Glendale) is DIEGO MARADONA (HBO Sports), the new doc from Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), which will show on HBO on October 1. If you don’t know international football (or soccer), the Argentine Maradona is one of the most famous footballers of all time, a bit of a legend since signing to Naples in 1984 for a record-setting fee. I haven’t watched this yet but hope to soon.
Opening at New York’s IFC Center Friday is Max Powers’ Don’t Be Nice (Juno Films), focusing on the Bowery Slam Poetry Team as they head to the national championships, and there will be QnAs almost every night in its week-long run, and then it will open in L.A. on September 27.
Completely unrelated but also at the IFC Center is a full-week run of National Theatre Live: Fleabag, screening a pre-recorded performance of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show that inspired her hit Emmy-nominated show from the Soho Playhousein London’s West End. Heck, I might try to get to one of these since it won’t be on television or any other format for at least a year.
After opening for “one night only” on Tuesday, Louie (The Cove) Psihoyos’ new movie The Game Changers will get a release on New York this Friday and L.A. the 27th. Exec. produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, it explores the rise of plant-based eating in professional sports along with Special Forces trainer James Wilks and features segments on Schwarzenegger, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, tennis player Novak Djokovic and NBA star Chris Paul.
Demi Moore, Ed Helms, Karan Soni (from the “Deadpool” movies) and Jessica Williams star in the horror-comedy Corporate Animals (Screen Media), the new comedy from Patrick Brice (Creep, The Overnight) about a corporate team-building adventure that turns to cannibalism when an office group find themselves trapped in a cave system. The movie has a great cast but the strange concept and weak screenplay really keeps the movie from delivering.
Other movies out this weekend include James Franco’s Zeroville (MyCinema), co-starring Megan Fox and Seth Rogen; Nicolas Cage’s new movie Running with the Devil (Quiver DIstribution), a drug thriller co-starring Laurence Fishburne, Barry Pepper, Leslie Bibb and more; and the award-winning Chinese drama Send Me to the Clouds (Cheng Cheng Films), opening in L.A., NY, Toronto and Vancouver.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Maybe the movie I’m most excited for this week is Zak Galifianakis’ BETWEEN TWO FERNS: THE MOVIE (Netflix), which I’m sure is going to be silly, maybe even stupid, but I’m still amused by his style of humor. I also haven’t seen the new Netflix doc Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates, and I also no absolutely nothing about the movie other than what’s in the title.
REPERTORY

The New Bev continues its “time out” at the bottom of this section as long as Tarantino uses his repertory theater to show Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, and currently it’s booked through the end of September. 40 is the new 35 when it comes to NFL quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Drew Brees
Back in the day, it was less common for quarterbacks to excel past their mid 30’s. Sure, there was Warren Moon, Vinny Testaverde, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, and John Elway. But that short list is dwarfed by a painfully longer one filled with Hall of Fame quarterbacks who seemed to crap out well short the 40 year marker.
Even these all time greats experienced precipitous drop offs in their mid to late 30’s. For Roger Staubach, Steve Young and Fran Tarkenton, it came at 37. For Bart Starr, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Dan Fouts, 36. For Johnny Unitas, George Blanda, Bob Griese, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, 35. For Otto Graham, Joe Namath, and Troy Aikman, 34.
This makes it all the more amazing that so many older quarterbacks are still playing at an elite level in today’s NFL. There might very well be five to seven future Hall of Famers starting in the league right now. Tom Brady and Drew Brees are officially in their 40’s. Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger are both 36. Aaron Rodgers is 34 and Matt Ryan is 33; and both signed extensions in the past couple years at times in their careers when former quarterbacks usually retired.
It’s true, quarterbacks are more protected by the rules of the NFL than ever before, and this certainly has played a part in their new found longevity. In 1978, the league restricted contact between defensive backs and receivers to within five yards of the line of scrimmage. This resulted in a dramatic increase in passing attempts per game, which in turn suddenly made the quarterback position more valuable.
Since 1993, quarterbacks could simply escape the pocket and throw a pass out of bounds without incurring an intentional grounding penalty. This made it harder for pass rushers to get to them before they got rid of the ball, therefore avoiding a sack or quarterback hit.
Roughing the passer penalties have become more and more common as the definition has broadened to include late hits, forcible hits below the knee, hitting the helmet, and landing on the quarterback with one’s own body weight.
Last year, former Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was flagged twice for roughing the passer while making what seemed to be perfectly executed sacks. Ironically, it was probably a hit on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers the previous season that may have led to the rule change that cost the Packers two victories a season later.
One would think that with these modern day quarterbacks dropping back more times throughout a game than ever before, their careers would be shorter, not longer. That’s why I think there’s more to it than the implementation of more rules that inherently protect the quarterback.
Because they played before GMO’s and modern day fast food chains, many old school players of the past had access to better food. But that doesn’t mean they took full advantage of their timely access to healthier lives. Joe Namath smoked cigarettes on the sidelines for god’s sake.
I doubt they were paying attention to the pH of their foods like Tom Brady or paying upwards of $200K a year like James Harrison did on therapy treatments like massage and acupuncture. The modern day athlete has to be almost obsessive in their quest for success. Talent alone won’t cut it anymore if you want to stick around in today’s NFL.
Extremely strict diets, fitness, and recovery programs have taken the place of binge eating like Babe Ruth, snorting cocaine like Diego Maradona, and binge drinking like Lawrence Taylor. The two oldest current quarterbacks in the NFL also happen to keep two of the strictest diet and fitness regimens across all sports.
Drew Brees has been working with Todd Durkin in San Diego, CA since his days with the Chargers. Brees loves working with Durkin every offseason. “Whenever I come back for the summertime to get in the best shape of my life for training camp, he’s always got something new or a few new things that make me feel like we’re way ahead of everybody else.”
What’s interesting to me, however, is that even though Brees isn’t Durkin’s biggest, fastest, or most agile athlete, he may have benefited the most simply because he’s willing to work harder than everyone else. And that’s saying a lot considering Durkin’s vast client list also includes Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, Darren Sproles, LaDainian Tomlinson, Mark Sanchez, Alex Smith, Brandon Cooks, Reggie Bush, Charles Tillman, Zach Ertz, John Brown, Dontrelle Inman, Malcom Floyd, Ryan Griffin, Chase Daniel, Sean Canfield, Josh Freeman, and my fellow Saints Ignatius College Prep alumnus, Igor Olshansky.
”Drew Brees, first and foremost, is a special person. I will probably not have the opportunity to work with a guy like that in the next 20 years. His concentration and focus are amazing, and he works extremely hard. He’s not the biggest guy or the fastest guy, but he’s going to beat you with his athleticism, his smarts and because he’s such a competitor. I don’t care what it is, the dude wants to win at anything. He’s always restless and never satisfied,” said Durkin.
Brees is absolutely methodical in his training and game preparation. “I know where I’m going to be at a specific time,” he says. “I know what I’m going to be doing; I know what needs to be accomplished for me to feel confident and go out there and play at the highest level.”
His focus has shifted from the archaic meathead approach to training he learned in college at Purdue to a more functional and efficient approach. “I think maybe those [exercises] served the purpose at the time.” Drew says. “But now I’ve wised up to the things that I need to do in a position-specific and functional fitness kind of way to benefit me as a quarterback.”
If you have 30 minutes to kill, watch this video of Brees’ workouts with Durkin.
I’ve been a fitness trainer and instructor for 12 years and I’m telling you, Durkin is the real deal. I love his approach to fitness. I stopped lifting heavy weights years ago and have focused more on agility ladder work, TRX training, yoga, and generally maximizing my strength and endurance gains while also minimizing sheering forces on my joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Tom Brady takes his fitness protocol in an even more holistic, and dare I say, Eastern direction. He and his trainer/business partner Alex Guerrero founded the TB12 training facility next to Gillette Stadium in 2013. Guerrero, though highly controversial, isn’t a total quack in my opinion.
Of course claiming his supplements could curemultiple sclerosis, AIDS, concussions, and other diseases with no shred of testing or evidence based proof was incredibly disingenuous and downright dangerous. Settling with multiple investors out of court for defrauding them is no better either.
But I have to hand it to him: he has kept Tom Brady in phenomenal shape to survive and thrive in the NFL past the age of 40. Guerrero earned a Masters Degree in traditional Chinese medicine from a school in LA that closed after losing its’ accreditation. He is not a physical therapist and does not hold any Western degrees that would qualify him to do a lot of the work he does with his clients.
Yet, Guerrero is highly respected and retained by many professional athletes including Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, Willie McGinest, Jimmy Garoppolo, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Chris Hogan. Instead of focusing on lifting huge weights and tearing muscle fibers, Guerrero prescribes more body weight moves and exercises with resistance bands that are designed to increase the muscles’ “pliability.”
Brady often sees Guerrero twice daily and receives intensely specific massages in which he tenses the muscles while Guerrero massages them. The goal is to lengthen the muscles and increase their flexibility so that Brady can withstand the weekly car crash that is an NFL football game.
The other main focus is to reduce inflammation in the body by maintaining a strict diet. Brady does not eat white flour, white sugar, MSG, iodized salt, coffee, caffeine, alcohol, fungus, dairy, nightshade vegetables and most types of fruit. This diet may sound strange, but it’s most likely derived from the Ayurvedic tradition which is over 5,000 years old and trusted throughout Asia as much as we trust Western medicine.
The part where Brady and Guerrero lose me is by making sweeping statements like everyone should drink 25 glasses of water a day, or eat this exact diet, or that everyone needs to consume TB12 branded electrolytes or wear TB12 branded muscle recovery pajamas.
I’m not 6’4” and 230lbs; I’m 5’6” and 130lbs, so I don’t need more than 65 ounces of water a day, unless Tom wants me to get hyponatremia and die of brain damage. Don’t just replicate a professional athlete’s diet and fitness regimen. These have been specially tailored to them. If you work for Google and sit at a desk for eight hours a day, you probably shouldn’t eat and drink exactly what Tom Brady does.
It’s okay to be skeptical too. Brees isn’t much more trust-worthy with his shameful peddling of Advocare products. It’s important to rely on evidence-based research conducted by independent bodies without a financial stake in the products they test. Even more important, think for yourself and do your own research before listening to athletes that have a financial stake in the health philosophies they are sharing with the public.
If you aren’t hip to eating according to your Ayurvedic dosha (My dosha is roughly 70% Pitta, 20% Vata, 10% Kapha) like Brady seems to, you can go the Western route and still learn something about how to function at a higher level, no matter what your lifestyle is. Drew and Brittney Brees got food sensitivity blood tests done back in 2004. That’s when Brees found he had significant sensitivities to gluten, dairy, and certain nuts.
“As you can imagine, I was shocked because I was consuming most of these things every day. And just to think how long I’ve had these sensitivities and had continued to feed them. Guys coming in fresh out of college are used to going to the training table and eating and drinking whatever they’re given.”
“In many cases, I see myself as a veteran player – pulling those young guys aside and, as part of teaching young players how to be a pro, talking to them about their diet, their sleep habits and their recovery. They’ll start to ask questions like, ‘Hey Drew, what do you do?’ That’s when I explain to them that I use coconut milk and almond milk products.”
It’s not just Brees’ direct teammates like Reggie Bush, Sean Canfield, Chase Daniel, Brandin Cooks, and Ryan Griffin who have followed his lead when it comes to diet and fitness. “It took the fourth or fifth time hearing, ‘You need to do this,’ and then reading about Drew Brees and Tom Brady and others who are your peers doing it,” Kirk Cousins said. “I realized, ‘If I want to hang with these guys, then it’s time to stop playing around.’”
18 of the 32 quarterbacks starting in the NFL are over 30 years old, and by September that list will grow to 21 with the 30th birthdays of Cam Newton, Tyrod Taylor, and Andrew Luck. Even though five quarterbacks were drafted in the first round last year, there’s a good chance less than a third of the starting quarterbacks in the league will be younger than 30 years old.
40 might be the new 35, and it’s not just because of some changes in the rules. Players are spending highly on optimizing their health and performance through a multitude of practices both new and incredibly old. Cousins is right, it’s time to stop playing around.
