Kris Kristofferson vs. Toby Keith, 2003, as told by Ethan Hawke in Rolling Stone.
STANDING BACKSTAGE AT THE BEACON Theatre in New York, leaning against a crumbling brick wall in the dark, I could barely see Kris Kristofferson standing to my left. Willie Nelson was in the shadows to my right. Ray Charles was standing beside Willie, idly shifting his weight back and forth. A bit farther along the wall were Elvis Costello, Wyclef Jean, Norah Jones, Shelby Lynne, Paul Simon and respective managers, friends and family. Everybody was nervous and tight. We were there for Willie Nelson’s 70th birthday concert in 2003.
Up from the basement came one of country music’s brightest stars (who shall remain nameless). At that moment in time, the Star had a monster radio hit about bombing America’s enemies back into the Stone Age.
“Happy birthday,” the Star said to Willie, breezing by us. As he passed Kristofferson in one long, confident stride, out of the corner of his mouth came “None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris.”
“What the luck did you just say to me?” Kris growled, stepping forward.
“Oh, no,” groaned Willie under his breath. “Don’t get Kris all riled up.”
“You heard me,” the Star said, walking away in the darkness.
“Don’t turn your back to me, boy,” Kristofferson shouted, not giving a shit that basically the entire music industry seemed to be flanking him.
The Star turned around: “I don’t want any problems, Kris – I just want you to tone it down.”
“You ever worn your country’s uniform?” Kris asked rhetorically.
“What?”
“Don’t ‘What?’ me, boy! You heard the question. You just don’t like the answer.” He paused just long enough to get a full chest of air. “I asked, ‘Have you ever served your country?’ The answer is, no, you have not. Have you ever killed another man? Huh? Have you ever taken another man’s life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not. So shut the fuck up!” I could feel his body pulsing with anger next to me. “You don’t know what the hell you are talking about!”
“Whatever,” the young Star muttered.
Ray Charles stood motionless. Willie Nelson looked at me and shrugged mischievously like a kid in the back of the classroom.
Kristofferson took a deep inhale and leaned against the wall, still vibrating with adrenaline. He looked over at Willie as if to say, “Don’t say a word.” Then his eyes found me.
“You know what Waylon Jennings said about guys like him?” he whispered.
I shook my head.
“‘They’re doin’ to country music what pantyhose did to finger-fuckin’.”

Out in the Middle: Part 2
Tumblr media
Summary: The parents have absolutely no way of keeping an eye on the kids.....and then Teeter steps in
The four sets of parents should have known that the minute their kids set foot on the Dutton land that the kids would turn into a pack of wild animals.
Surprisingly enough, they were as well behaved as could be during breakfast and dinner, but the minute John, Royal and the rest of them had shooed the kids outside, they knew the kids would most likely be finding new and inventive ways to beat the ever living shit out of each other until dinner time.
“Kinda quiet for a Saturday morning, isn’t it John?” Thomas Rainwater remarked as he joined John and Royal on the front porch.
“Quiet with the kids around is never a good thing,” John chuckled, setting his coffee mug on the splintered wood table next to him.
“Oh c’mon,” Royal remarked. “You remember the stupid shit we were doing as kids?”
“You, me, Tom and Mo were the terrors of Bozeman Central High School,” John half laughed. “I still haven’t forgotten that time that we had that graduation party up at the lake.”
“Or the fact that the four of us lived on sub-sandwiches and a VHS copy of ‘Animal House’,” Thomas added.
The three men made the best of their morning, enjoying the hot coffee and looking out over the land that was worth everything to them.
*********************************
Teeter hated re-shoeing the horses more than anything, but at least it was better than shoveling buffalo shit.
Quietly under her breath, she sang along to Willie Nelson’s “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die”, a piece of hay hanging loose from her lip as she carefully re-shoed the horses.
The rustling and giggling that followed somewhere in the stables caught her off guard, stopping her dead in her tracks before she shrugged and went back to work.
But soon, there it was again.
“Ight where are ya?!” she called loudly. “C’mon down here ya lil ghouls!”
Four little girls, two Duttons, an Abbott and a Wheeler, poked their little heads out of the loft, grinning and giggling as though they had a secret only known amongst themselves.
“Ya’ll gettin into mischief up there?”
“No!” the girls answered, still giggling.
“Well at least ya’ll are pretty easy to handle,” she muttered. “Where in the fuck are yer brothers?”
Teeter jumped when she heard yelling outside the barn and saw Tatum, Tanner, Joey Wheeler and Jake Long all charging at each other with Amy and Tate close behind them.
“Oh my fuckin shit,” Teeter chuckled as she left the stables.
Outside was a whirlwind of indiscernible yells, shouts and yelps as Tanner and Joey began hitting each other on the behind with a stick. “Guys!” Amy shouted. “Guys cut it out!! GUYS!!”
Neither Tanner nor Joey listened. There was a strange tension in the air, a tension that held itself there for a few short seconds.....
“Everybody SHUT......THE FUCK......UP!!!!!!”
The kids immediately, at the sound of their aunt’s voice, dropped the sticks in their hands and lined up in a straight line, not wanting to incur her wrath or the wrath of their parents later.
“The fuck were ya’ll playin?” Teeter questioned.
“Um.......we called it ‘Spank’,” Tatum said meekly.
Teeter groaned, her eyes rolling a little bit to the back of her head. “Ight, I don’t have a problem with ya’ll runnin ‘round like a pack o wild rabbits,” she explained. “But the minute one o’ ya’ll puts an eye out, Imma have ta haul yer asses all the way bac ta yer mommas and yer daddies. And I know.....I KNOW.....none o’ ya’ll want that, so no nothin sharp goes near the faces. Git it?”
“Yes Aunt Teeter,” the kids all replied collectively.
“Good,” she said, adjusting the Houston Astros baseball cap on her head. “Now if ya’ll behave later, I’ll teach ya’ll how ta rope a buffalo.”
Their faces lit up, the kids cheering as they ran off towards the horse corral.
“And no lightin nothin on fire either ya lil monsters!!” she called after them. “Ya’ll light up that back field, I’ll know who did it just by the smell!!!!”
Teeter shook her head and snorted before she went back to work. She loved her nieces and nephews to death, but Lord help the parents when they became teenagers.

ROH Fake Rankings, 12/2/2023
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Eddie Kingston (ROH men's world champion, STRONG men's champion)
Dalton Castle
El Hijo del Vikingo (AAA mega champion)
Komander (AAA cruiserweight champion)
Ethan Page
Lee Johnson
Gravity
Trent Beretta
Metalik
Willie Mack
Men's singles division - heels
Wheeler Yuta (ROH pure champion)
Brian Cage (ROH trios champion)
Kyle Fletcher
Tony Nese
Josh Woods
Evil Uno
Nick Comoroto
Unranked: Fred Rosser, Gringo Loco, Jack Cartwheel, Slim J, SK Bishop
After Tony Khan launched AEW in 2019, ROH went through a bit of a dark age until Khan acquired the promotion in 2022. Few names from that era remain on the roster--Castle, Yuta, and Woods are the most prominent on the weekly TV series right now.
We're two weeks away from ROH's next pay-per-view, Final Battle, and the men's side only has one match announced--a six-way for the television title, which Samoa Joe abandoned. Joe is putting his focus on chasing the AEW men's world champion MJF, who has been one of the ROH tag team champions for three months and has yet to appear on an ROH show. As for the six-way, only Castle and Komander have been confirmed as participants thus far.
I assume there won't be a men's world title match on the PPV, since Kingston is busy with AEW's Continental Classic tournament. Similarly the pure title has seen more action in AEW than ROH. Brian Cage and the trios title are effectively on ice until his tag partners return from New Japan's World Tag League.
I have no doubt Final Battle will end up being a good show. But with ROH in the state it's in, the quality of the show will largely depend on how many big names from AEW (or perhaps New Japan) will come in for exactly one night, tear the house down, and then not stick around. That approach isn't going to convince people to pay $10/month for the weekly TV.
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
Darius Martin & Action Andretti
Dralistico & Preston Vance
Iron Savages - Boulder & Bronson
Shawn Dean & Carlie Bravo
Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal
The Outrunners - Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd
Colt Cabana & Brandon Cutler
The Boys - Brandon Tate & Brent Tate
The Bollywood Boyz - Gurv Shira & Harv Shira
Men's tag team division - heels
Gates of Agony - Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona (ROH trios champions)
The Righteous - Vincent Marseglia & Bobby Dutch
The Butcher & The Blade
Shane Taylor Promotions - Shane Taylor & Lee Moriarty
The Workhorsemen - Anthony Henry & JD Drake
Cole Karter & Griff Garrison
Spanish Announce Project - Serpentico & Angelico
The Wingmen - Ryan Nemeth & Peter Avalon
The West Coast Wrecking Crew - Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaacs
Unranked: Jacoby Watts & Sebastian Wolfe, Trevor Outlaw & GPA
On paper this looks like a stacked tag team division. However, most of the teams listed are booked like jobbers when they appear on AEW teleivison, and get booked 50/50 in ROH matches. I think the Iron Savages, the Infantry (Dean/Bravo and Trish Adora), and the Outrunners have a ton of potential, but I can't fool myself into thinking they're being pushed right now. Andretti/Martin and the Righteous are presented like big deals, but their win-loss records don't reflect that--hell, the Righteous couldn't even beat MJF two-on-one.
The main exception is Kaun and Liona, who are booked like monsters. But there's no sense of that leading to them challenging for the ROH tag title. The main idea is that they're part of a monster trio with Brian Cage. But after a year at the top of the trios division, they've destroyed every possible trio combination on this roster, and it feels like only an AEW superteam could topple them.
Women's division - babyfaces
Willow Nightingale
Billie Starkz
Leyla Hirsch
Rachael Ellering
Kiera Hogan
Trish Adora
Women's division - heels
Athena (ROH women's world champion)
Marina Shafir
Nyla Rose
Mercedes Martinez
Diamante
Emi Sakura
Robyn Renegade
Charlette Renegade
Unranked: Amira, Brooke Havok, Heather Reckless, Heidi Howitzer, Johnnie Robbie, Kel, Ronda Rousey, Zoey Lynn
The biggest storyline in ROH lately has been Athena training Starkz to be her "minion," and feuding with Shafir, until Starkz flipped out on both Shafir and Athena, and challenged Athena for the title at Final Battle. At this point I'm not sure which of the three are supposed to end up being babyfaces or heels, but the story's still in progress.
They're also doing a thing with Hirsch trying to decide whether Ellering or Maria Kanellis truly has her back. So good for ROH for actually having multiple women's storylines, although I wish the second one wasn't the same passive-agressive "are you really my friend?" stuff we see all the time in women's wrestling.
The Renegades have gotten involved with both of these storylines, in tag matches against Athena/Starkz and Ellering/Hirsch. That's a good idea to keep things interesting. Unfortunately the Renegades have the same problem the Bella Twins had in WWE--their whole deal is being a cohesive duo, but the promotion doesn't have a women's tag team title for them to dominate.
OK, this next part is where I list wrestlers who are on the roster but haven't had a match in over a month. Thing is, ROH doesn't really have an official roster. So this is just a selection of wrestlers who are either on AEW's official roster or free agents that seem to be ROH regulars.
No televised ROH matches in 30 days: Allysin Kay, Blake Christian (GCW world champion), Kip Sabian, Lady Frost, Marti Belle, QT Marshall, Rocky Romero (CMLL historic welterweight champion), Scorpio Sky, Skye Blue
No televised ROH matches in 60 days: Angelina Love, AR Fox, Claudio Castagnoli, Chuck Taylor, Jimmy Jacobs, Leila Grey, Nick Wayne, Silas Young
Last televised ROH match between June 1 and August 31: Alex Reynolds, Big Bill (AEW tag team champion), Cheeseburger, Daniel Garcia, Eli Isom, Jacked Jameson, John Silver, Leon Ruffin, Madison Rayne, Mark Briscoe, Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Miranda Alize, Penta El Zero Miedo, Rey Fenix, Rhett Titus, Samoa Joe, Stokely Hathaway, Stu Grayson, Tracy Williams
Looking at all these names, you can see talent that will probably be back before long, and others who have clearly moved on. I really doubt Castagnoli and Samoa Joe will be back. The Kingdom (Taven and Bennett) feel integral to 2020s ROH, but their AEW act with Roderick Strong is so hot right now that it'd be silly to move them back here. In other cases (for example, Isom, Cheeseburger, Williams, Titus) I never know if they're just on a hiatus or if Tony Khan has just decided to stop booking them altogether.
I would guess about half of these names will return to ROH now and then over the next six months. But "will return" could mean "will appear weekly leading to a PPV match" or just "will do one match and then nothing for another six months."
Inactive
Bandido (left wrist - triangular fibrocartilage complex tear)
Katsuyori Shibata (leave of absence)
There's no way to know if either of these guys will be ROH regulars when they return, but they were when we last saw them. By the same token, Dante Martin (who was injured on an ROH show months ago and has just made his return) could be headed back here or maybe he won't.
Conspicuous by their absence on this list are the ROH tag team champions, since Adam Cole hasn't wrestled under the ROH brand since 2017, and MJF never has. I thought it was possible they'd at least show up for Final Battle, but there's no timetable for Cole's return from an ankle injury. MJF could show up to defend the tag belts solo, or with a substitute partner. But considering he's working through a torn labrum, and trying to make it to the December 30 show, Final Battle is probably a low priority for his schedule.

What could be better than a celtic music hike with my beloved little dog, sunshine, blue skies, mountains, and wildlife...including bears?
Love the podcast. Keep up the great work! Many thanks,"

Shel O'Toole emailed: "Hi Marc,
I spent 5 months wandering around Ireland back in 1998.
I loved Glendalough in County Wicklow.  It’s so picturesque and there is some great walking in the area.
I also enjoyed walking around Tralee toward Dingle.  I didn’t get to Dingle but rambled across low hills through sheep filled paddocks.
I did get to Mayo and of course visited Matt Molloy’s pub in Westport where I was mistaken for Dolores Keane.   That was such a hoot and the look on the faces of the two men who were trying to determine if I was indeed “herself” when I said g’day in my broadest Aussie accent was priceless.
One of the guys I went to Irish World Music School with had a salmon farm near Westport.  That was 25 years ago so who knows if he’s still there.  He was a flautist so if you’re at a session you may run into him.
Malin Head was a gorgeous place to visit, especially Raised Beach where you can scoop up semi - precious stones that have been worn smooth by being tumbled in the waves for years.
The only place I visited in Ireland I did not fall in love with was Derry.
I look forward to your stories from your immersion in Mayo.
Sláinte"

Nelson. Pals.
Tumblr media
Initially Betty is reading an issue of Sabrina. Which, depending on when in Archie's history it is may be a little weird, but Sabrina right then has nothing to do with Riverdale and exists in a different universe. But a half decade later, someone snuck something in for their own amusement. It happens. Rex W Lindsey paid homage to George Herriman on a shirt Jughead wore once. And here's Fernando Ruiz with Robot Monster:
Tumblr media
I note that I caught a second Robot Monster from him elsewhere.
But. Okay. Nelson. Pals. A 'P' lettered baseball cap guy -- Pittsburgh Represent maybe? who happens to be the one taken from the vague outline to having details. A neck beard who is probably but perhaps not bald. The short haired woman with short dark hair remains the same. And toward what is this a sleight of hand plug directed? I honestly do not know. Is there a Willie Nelson fan on staff?

Roll Me Away
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Bob and his dad definitely need another round
Notes: I was listening to this gem of a song here and all I could think of was Bob and his dad singing it together
Warnings: More weed usage, minors do not interact
Bob was hurting......badly.
Anybody who touched him or even looked at him the wrong way was sure to get pushed off the deck later.
And that fucking cow was the first on his list.
A wave of nausea turned in his stomach as he rounded the corner of the shed where his dad kept the truck, leaning against the wall in case he tossed his dinner, waiting in anticipation for it to come up.......but lucky for him it never did.
I’m gonna turn that fuckin monster into hamburger when I’m done with it.......he mused darkly.
The quiet blast of a radio inside and the familiar skunky odor signaled to Bob that the one person he needed to see was waiting for him inside. He followed the herby, skunky miasma of burning cannabis into the shed and sure enough, sitting on the tailgate of the truck was Joe, smoking a bowl and singing along to his favorite Willie Nelson song.
“Ow......shit......fuck,” Bob cursed under his breath.
“The fuck happened to you?” Joe chuckled as he turned the small marijuana bowl over and dumped the ashes into the bucket near him.
“That asshole,” Bob hissed. “The one you call ‘Turd Ferguson’........let his hooves fly.”
“He kicked you?”
“He kicked me in the gut and I hit the support pole of the corral fence,” Bob explained with a wince. “Rooster went flying and ended up with whiplash.”
“Oh you poor fucker,” Joe laughed. “C’mere I know what you need.”
Bob seated himself on the tailgate, his ribs and abdomen screaming as he sat beside his father. Joe pulled a plastic bag from his back pocket and took out the roughly chopped buds, placing them in the bowl before lighting up. “Here,” he said.
Bob knew there was no getting around it. It was either smoke it or suffer for it later. “You sure?” he asked.
“My knee surgery isn’t for another month,” Joe told him. “Doc told me to smoke up while I can.”
Bob inhaled as best he could, trying to take a hit, the pain shooting in his ribs and triggering an involuntary coughing fit.
“Sheesh, he must’ve really knocked the breath outta you,” Joe remarked.
“You have no idea,” Bob said, trying to stifle another cough that squeezed his ribs.
They smoked away in the shed, the song on repeat as the two of them sang along, trying to forget the stress of the day and the pain that had come with it. Bob and his dad passed the bowl back and forth as the pain ebbed away, losing themselves in the moment as they laughed together in between the obnoxious singing.
And they wouldn’t have had it any other way.
