Aha, my first one for Valentine's Day Week! I'm excited about this one!
Tumblr media
Introducing Abner Holloway and Cordelia Clayton... also known, one day, as the Woodsman and the Woodsman's Wife.
See, back in October, I decided I wanted to draw the two of them when they were young. That of course meant I had to give them names...
Long story short, expect the first of a fic in the coming week. :P
So, them. The way I like to describe it is that Cordelia fell in like first, and Abner fell in love first. She stops by and talks to him while he's working every week, and he mainly listens. It takes her a long time to realize why he replies so little.
They are GOOD KIDS okay
There's so many little moments between them that I came up with, but here's one I drew:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cordelia cheerfully waves hi to a startled Abner. As soon as Cordelia turns her back, humming happily, he tugs his hat down over his face, blushing furiously.
I could say so much about them, but I think I'll wait on that until I start posting the fic. However, I'll add one more thing: this song is inextricably linked to their story in my mind.
(Also, general note, I'm not the first on here to have made a young/named version of the Woodsman and his wife (see here). But I definitely support more content for these two, so take a look!)

Monster Hunt: Nanny Knockthrice
A series of chilling disappearances has brought your party to the edge of the mist-haunted Greyspear Forest, as well as face to face with an enemy as ancient and enduring as the stones beneath your feet
Spoken of only in hushed voices, those who live on the edge of the wood tell of a terrible figure, cruel as the harshest winter, bent with age and the weight of the bulging sack she carries. They know no name for her besides the one handed down from elders, and that she appears at the door to each homestead once a year on the same moonless night to knock three times. Terrible fates are said to befall those who answer, so the locals keep to a tradition known as Opfernoct: laying out gifts for their unwelcome guest, keeping their homes dark and quiet until dawn.
Adventure Hooks:
The party venture into the village only to see one of the nearby houses with its roof partially torn off. Asking questions results in flimsy excuses and reproachful looks from strangers, until the truth comes out: A bookish boy named Verner was apparently snatched out of his home on the recent Opfernoct having snuck a candle to read in bed. His parents, who got the boy the book for his birthday have been shamed for not keeping a better leash on their child and kept from talking to the meddlesome party for fear their actions would bring even further reprocussions.
After impressing the local nobles with their adventurous antics, the party are invited to the marquess’s hunting lodge, an event sure to be filled with revelry and rife with opportunities to court both patronage and attractive strangers. Flouting local customs, the marquis has decided to keep her estate lit through ….  Ensuring the party will go on without interruption.  What a surprise then when a thunderous knock sounds at the door, only for a giant arm to shove through the entryway and snatch up a gaggle of guests (some the party despise, some they were quite getting on with) and drag them off into the night.
Recommended Reading: Check out my write up connecting giants & the feywild, which this draws heavily from.
Background: The legend of Nanny Knockthrice begins when the first woodsman sought to make a home within the boundaries of the primeval forest. The moment his axe had sunk into the trunk of a tree, an old woman stepped from the woods and demanded that a price be paid, for these were her lands and her trees, and the woodsman . The woodsman replied that he had nothing to pay the old woman with save the tools of his trade and the clothes on his back, and he would surely die without either. If she could defer payment for a year, until his labour had built his house and filled his larder, he'd gladly let her take her pick of rewards then. The old woman assented, vanishing into the forest just as soon as she'd appeared. Like any deal with the fey the weight of the bargain could not be understood until the woman returned a year later to take her pick of what the woodsman had filled his home with over the past year... snapping his new wife off the threshhold when she came to answer the door.
Challenges & Complications:
More than just her size, impossible strength, or her ability to fade in and out of the mist, the greatest threat Nanny Knockthrice presents is that she takes hostages and is not above using them as bargaining chips against meddling heroes. She will break the limbs of her victims in full view of the party to warn them against interfering, or lob them into freezing water to slow down her pursuers. When threats fail, it's time to open her bag of tricks, which can contain anything from a raging storm, captured feywild beasts, or even the animated bones of her previous tributes. She's liable to use these surprises in between uprooting entire pine trees to use as clubs, or throwing heroes like walnuts into the next valley over.
Stalking Knockthrice may prove the better option of rescuing her victims, but will require the party to venture into the feywild, passing through a veil of mist to a wilderness even more wild and foreboding than they left behind. Getting back might likewise prove an issue, and may require them to strike their own deal with a powerful fey to get home
Nanny's lair is a tumbledown stone cottage the size of a fortress known as the keening keep. Built into the top and side of a clearcut hillstead, it surveys the surrounding woodland like an owl looking for prey. The keep originally belonged to a tribe of batlike fey known as the gloamwing courterie, who now reluctantly act as the giant's servants after their forebearer swore an inverse deal to the woodsman: letting her store her tribute in their keep for a year save for the one night she must heap it on her back and wander the mortal world. While some gloamwings are loyal to Nanny, others resent being banished to the rafters of their ancesteral home, or having to share the darkened corners with all the morose mortals Knockthrice keeps like maltreated pets. The party may be able to strike a deal, keeping in mind the bats are all as sinister as any unseelie fae and might betray them at any point just to keep things interesting.
If the party pays attention when stories are shared around the fire, they might notice a loophole in the deal struck by the woodsman: namely that Knockthrice was not allowed to take either his tools, or his clothes. In the way of fairytales, tricking the giant into accepting either of these will break the cure, though the party might need to be clever about it. The woodsman's clothes are buried with him out back of the ruins of the cabin the party will keep stumbling across in their feywild wanderings. His axe was handed down to his extended family after he died of heartbreak, and could be anywhere by now... such as hanging over the mantle of a noble's hunting lodge, buried in an innocuous tree, or in the back of a creepy peddler's cart.

Paws (GhostSoap) Call of Duty
Rating: G-T
Summary:
Soap, Ghost, Gaz and Prince have been in the Heavy Metal band, Underground 141, for over 20 years. They know they're a successful band, their manager Laswell has them working as a tight unit, and their accountants would agree as well. Three out of the four of them have kids, two are married and Ghost likes being the odd man out.

___
Soap, Ghost, Gaz and Prince have been in the Heavy Metal band, Underground 141, for over 20 years. They know they're a successful band, their manager Laswell has them working as a tight unit, and their accountants would agree as well.
Three out of the four of them have kids, two are married and Ghost likes being the odd man out.
In his bones, he is a woodsman at heart. He likes wilderness activities, and collecting guns. His home is a fortress, yet it's also littered with teenagers' junk since Soap’s kids like being at his home as much as their Father does.
He never understood his friends' fascination with him, and his kids have caught it as well. He's had to yell at them a few times when Gaz and Price bring their kids over and they want time with him as well.
He knows more information about how the people think about their band than he's used to knowing, now that Emilio, Soap’s oldest, likes to record them for his TikToks.
Ghost is always in his mask when he's recording. The world has never seen his face. He performs with it, does photoshoots in it and interviews.
He was homeschooled as a kid, and the only person with photos of him as a kid is his brother.
Against his will, he's learned the internet likes to ship Soap and he. He finds it odd. Shouldn't they ship their lead singer with someone who's handsome, or his ex-wife. He doesn't understand the appeal that two middle aged men have to people.
Valeria, Soap’s ex, and PR manager, called him a Puta, when she told him to post more pictures of him and John on his insta instead of the fish he catches.
Later that day, a photo of him without his face showing, and shirtless, with his fish he caught, shows up on Johnny's Instagram. They spent the weekend at one of Ghost cabins, making a fire, and cooking soup the old fashion way. It was something they liked to do from time to time. He knew Soap took photos of him, always has since they met. The little freak likes to act like the paparazzi and take photos of him when he thinks Simon isn't paying attention.
The Internet instantly knows it's Ghost body. He may not show his face, but he shows his arms every now and again. It gets hot on stage playing the guitar for four hours, while Gaz will play the drums while they shower him with water during one of their theatrical sets.
Valeria high fived Soap the next time they had a management meeting.
He stood up and took a bow, everyone clapping for him.
Ghost didn't clap, he was just confused.
“Simon, ye just don't know the appeal ye have on people.” Johnny said when the meeting was over, as they walked down the hallway for their studio session. Johnny had his arm wrapped around Simon’s, leaning his head on the tall man’s shoulder.
“Your attention is enough to fill a stadium. I don't need more people gawking at me.” Simon said, behind his half mask.
“Ye just need me, big yin?”
“I got you, even if I don't want you, don't I?”
Soap laughs. “Damn, right.” He reaches over and rubs his hand on Simon's stomach over his signature black hoodie. “Ye gonnae cook fer me later?”
“If you can make whatever those lyrics Gaz was trying to explain to us in that meeting sound good, sure.”
They arrived, at the entrance of the studio, and Soap, wrapped a hand around Ghost wrist, “As long as ye, haz a right melody for me to holler to.”
“Oh, I'll give you something to holler to, Johnny.”
Ghost watched the blush flush up Soap's face, before opening the door, and pushing the Scottman inside.
_____
Ghost shouldn't be surprised that it took this long for it to happen.
Soaps have been hinting around for a while on the subject, and even the kids have been showing him videos and dropping horrible concealed hits on the topic, and now he's in this predicament.
“Guys, guys, look at the new puppy my Uncle Ghost got!” Emilio was recording him while the dalmatian puppy was trying to take his sock off as he sat on the floor in front of his couch in the living room.
The curly hair teen had his phone up, moving around in slow circles trying to get every angle, Ghost guessed. Soap was sitting on the couch next to him with Ghost's head resting on his knee.
He had his official Ghost mask on since he knew the boy was going to record at some point during their time together.
Soap’s daughter Tila, was in the kitchen eating out of a bag of grapes with the fridge door open.
“Get ye a bowl, wee an.” Soap yelled for about the third time, but the 12 year old continued eating on the floor.
“It's fine.” Ghost said he had one of his arms curled around Soap’s leg. He caressed his friend's ankle. “You MacTavish always eat me out of house and home. Don't know why you just don't move in at this point.”
Soap stuck a few fingers under the back of Ghost’s mask, fiddling with the hairs on the back. “Dinnae thinks a Britt like ye, could handle us Scotts 24/7.” He murmurs.
Simon huffs a laugh. He glances as Emilio picks up the puppy, and records themselves dancing together to some song. The boy had his ear buds in.
“Oh, and 23/6.5 is clearly my limit.”
Soap hums.
“Well, both of our names are on the wee dug's certificate.” He says with a tone of nonchalant.
Ghost firmly grasps Johnny's ankle. “Yeah, even though it's my dog.”
Soap hums again. He takes his hand out of Ghost mask, and slides down on the floor with him.
“Be careful Johnny. You can't get up and down like you used to.” Ghost teases.
“Name the time, Si, and I can show ye, how much I can still get up and down just fine. Treat yeez like a bonnie cuddy.” He takes Simon's hand into his, and grins a feral grin at his long time friend before licking his bottom lips and biting it.
Simon laughs at him. “I thought you needed a wedding before you'd give it up again.”
“Aye, I do.” He looks at Simon meaningfully.
Oh.
“Oh.”
Soap chuckles at him. “Let's talk more when the bairns are asleep, yeah? Maybe I'll show yeez a good winch.”
Ghost is speechless after that.

It was only a matter of time until I made fanart of Age of Empires 3. Decided to start by drawing the entire family tree of the game's protagonists.
Every named character - except for Phillip (he was only mentioned in the game's guide) - is playable in the game. You start with Morgan in mid-1500s and work your way generation after generation of the Black family until mid-1800s.
My favorite characters are definitely John and Chayton. John has one of the best lore and is in the Act with the best cast of characters, and Chayton is unhinged and a baddass.
Below the cut is my thought process for the drawing. Also, if anyone wants to see my Age of Empires posts, the tag on my blog is "aoeposting".
Starting with Morgan. According to the wiki and the game's guide, he had four children. Two we don't know the name of, John's father Phillip and John's uncle Stuart.
I assume, since Morgan is 200 years old by the time John is born, that neither Stuart nor Phillip were Elizabet's children. He probably had them way later, after getting married to a British woman. But since it's canon he and Lizzie had a situationship, I'm assuming those two unnamed kids are hers, and she took them and raised them as pirates.
I doubt Lizzie ever married Morgan. Though now I don't know what's funnier, them getting married or Morgan the Knight inventing friends with benefits in the 1500s and having children out of wedlock with a pirate.
Well, we don't have time to unpack all that.
So Morgan's British Wife is very posh, to explain why Stuart stands out so much when next to his woodsman nephew John. Both John's father and mother were inspired by the Settlers' design in-game.
Tumblr media
I made John's mother be half-Mohawk, because a friend of mine pointed out John and Ká:nien are implied to have grown up together, as well as John having some beadwork in his coat.
I drew Nonahkee's new design, just gave her her old design's braids.
I made Nathaniel's wife white, blonde, and very similar to Amelia, because despite Amelia being half-Mohawk, she looks white, looks nothing like her dad, and is even asked at some point in the game if it's true her family is mixed.
For her husband, I looked up pictures of Lakota men from that time period, as well as some of the in-game Lakota exclusive units. He was particularly inspired on the Club Warrior.
Tumblr media
And finally we get to Chayton, who is white, Mohawk and Lakota, with Brits and Scots in his family history. I did say this game was about a long string of biracial people.
He rides off into the sunset at the end of his story. We don't know if he had any children.

Headcanon time!!
I like to think mogens has a slight fear of reindeer-- for one thing it's simply funny whenever someone who lives at sea fears land creatures, but also bc the circumstances is even funnier--
I imagine it goes like this--
Mogens is going to the woodsmans cabin (idk the reason yet, maybe klaus's dead wife's spirit lures him over to try and get her hubby bubby some friends--)
And well.. he stumbles upon the reindeer! And it's during their velvet shedding season--
Now if you don't know, velvet is what covers a deers antlers while they're growing, supplies nutrients and blood for the antlers to grow, and when they're finished growing, they shed the velvet off-- and it's very very bloody-- (it isn't painful for them DW)
So you can imagine mogens' absolute HORROR seeing these giant beasts with blood soaking their antlers, staring him down-- looking like somethin' out of a horror movie lol--
And he turns tail screaming like a lil baby-- while the reindeer are just like "is bro good??".

Idk I just think that'd be funny af fjdbdjdn

It’s almost Christmas time so I figure it would be the right time to talk about one of my favorite animated Christmas movies.
It’s the story of one postal worker named Jesper and how he participated in (or practically invented) the origins of the Santa Claus myth. Taking place sometime before the 20th century, Jesper was a young man who would rather coast through life living off his family’s wealth rather then partake in the family business. His father the Post Master General decided enough was enough and gave his son an ultimatum. Fulfill a large quota in a certain amount of time or be permanently cut-off financially. A task which proved challenging for Jesper as the mail route he was assigned to had a long history of neighbors battling on a daily basis which meant no one was interested in reaching out to one another even by mail. Just when things are looking hopeless for the guy, Jesper comes across a stray child’s drawing and a widower woodsman. The woodsman who is named Klaus saw the sadness in the child’s drawing and tasks Jesper with giving said child a toy he had made back from when he and his late wife were planning for children they were never able to have. Realizing he could work this to his advantage, Jesper convinced Klaus to keep giving away his old toys to the children so he could fulfill his quota and go back to his wealthy lifestyle. Overtime they both indirectly transform a desolate town into a warm community. Jesper started out as wanting to get back to a life of luxury but that begs a question. If he found the right people, does he want anything more?
Tumblr media
There have been a lot of Christmas movies and specials over the years. Animated ones, live action ones, and romantic ones where the lead learns the true meaning of Christmas from small towns where most times their love interests turn out to be royalty. But this particular recent creation stood out to me. It’s not very commercial, the color schemes are more subtle and it’s not particularly overt with religious tones that usually come with the holiday. It wasn’t so much as about Saving Christmas as it is with Saving a community with Christmas.
It’s particularly a down-to-earth kind of Christmas movie where it’s not very clear about the magic occurrences that goes on in particular scenes. It also gives credit to the postal service. Portraying it as the serious function to society as it’s meant to be. It also serves a bit of a humorous tongue-in-cheek wink to the instance of Santa Claus taking credit for the deliveries made by the put-upon postal worker. We also get representation for the Sammi people, which rarely happens even in live action works. Not to mention how they serve the plot and the contribution to the reindeer element of Christmas.
Tumblr media
Overall this movie deserves love and praise for its themes of community and good deeds sparking a chain reaction of positive change. This deserves to be in the top ten list for Christmas movies to watch annually.

Would you ever write a fairytale AU? If so, which would you do (and for which fandom)? c:
I love, but am very picky about, fairytale aus. I tend to be more attracted to fairytales about responsibility and personal heroism than ones about marriages and seeing someone truly, etc.
I really love @rosella-writes "Green Knight AU" of Virelan Lavellan red is the colour of lust (but green is what lust leaves behind), for example.
One genuine fairy tale I have had knocking around are Mighty Mikko: The Story of a Poor Woodsman and a Grateful Fox. The story has a personal interpretation that means a lot to me, about giving until you have nothing left, for the sake of someone else's happiness, about "you can't pour from an empty cup." In my version, the fox gives its own pelt to Mikko's new wife, and Mikko never realized that that's where his dear friend the fox disappeared to. The fox would be the main character, of course. This one feels like it would be a Zelda fic--thinking of both OOT Link, and TP Link, and how they sacrifice everything for Zelda and get nothing in return in the end but grief.
And it's not a traditional fairy tale but it's written as one (in verse): The 13 Clocks by James Thurber would make a really fun one to adapt. The 13 Clocks is one of my favorite stories in the world, period. I don't know what fandom it would be for -- at the moment I don't have any damsels I want to lock away in a tower.

(Also on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/LUl6msuU1-c)
If anyone here is familiar with Kansas beyond the three famous ones, you may know the song "Lamplight Symphony". It tells the story of an old man, haunted one night by the ghost of his wife. It's a longish song, but it's very good. And also fits the story of this animatic exceedingly well.
The song association has jumped from one fictional couple to another over the years. But this time, it gave me inspiration. This time, it stuck. So, I drew a few pictures (complete with shading), edited them together, and created this animatic.
The story here, basically, is one of the Woodsman. One night, maybe while he's the lantern-bearer, he finds the memory of his wife keeping him awake. He's grieving, he's running out of hope, and he's alone. He misses his daughter, yes, but right now, he misses his wife terribly.
Then he hears a voice. He feels a presence - as supernatural as the Beast, but utterly different.
He was filled with fear, but, filled with joy, he arose And turned to face the image that he knew
The Woodsman's wife comes to him that night. Shining, comforting, giving him hope. And when her ghost fades, he watches the dawn. Though it's seen through tears, he watches it with a heart less heavy.
...yes, I know, I'm sorry, but I promise tomorrow will be something less painful. Less visual, too, but also less painful. Hopefully, this was still good despite the pain.
(The actual pictures that made up the animatic are below the cut, if anyone's interested!)
