This is by no means the master post, but I gotta put my work somewhere. I’ve been going off the rails with bestie @hard-times-paramore over the computer video game, Age of Empires III.
At first it was just character fanart, and now I’m neck-deep in historical fiction. I’ve researched more than I ever thought possible, and I am living the LIF
Let’s start at the beginning. First, OP dared me to draw pony versions of the characters after two play through streams. I had no idea of the plot, only a general vibe of the gameplay, and Hard Times’ opinions on the game.
These are still not the final designs, but I still love them.
MARCH 8, 2024
To start off, I’ve got sketches for the two Native siblings, Kánien and Nonahkee from Act II: Ice. Actually, my first round of fanart was for Act II, since it’s OP’s favorite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just a few minutes later, I slapped together Act II’s villain, Warwick. I wasn’t even aware the name of the game’s running antagonists was the Circle of Ossus, so the bone theme was entirely unintentional.
Tumblr media
Last, and most difficult, was the corresponding main character for the story arc John (Aloysius) Black (< this is not his actual middle name). I thoroughly enjoyed making this pony set, and am surprised at how well John’s design still holds up after looking it over multiple times.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty tired from my week, but when we return—AGE OF EMPIRES MEMEPOSTING

The saddest thing is, I knew Jennifer Hale was playing Bayo because I recognised her British accent as the same one she used for Elisabet Ramsey in AoE3.

What is it about RTS game writing that causes it to be so uniquely deranged?

Fun fact about me, I was born in 97, same year age of empires 1 came out, my dad put me on his knee at I believe 3 months old and would play age of empires 1 with me. I would help by mashing my hands on the keyboard. This continued to me playing my father's saved games where he had already built up the economy so I could just spam military units and win because yay pippa horse men and habbadackas! During primary school I was the only one who could accurately describe various European battles, features of castles and technologies of the Middle ages (even though nobody asked I was determined to tell them still) I got age of empires three the day it came out and I finished every campaign on every difficulty before steam was a thing. When I got into D&D I used to make the in campaign cities in age of empires 2. I do not say this as a brag nor as a point of shame but I have played age of empires my entire life, I could not tell you the exact hours I have spent on age of empires but I can tell you that it has never left my life.
So when I say this I want people to understand where it's coming from
I do not like age of empires 4, it just does not feel fun.

So, i have played most of the age of empires 3 campaing recently, i have many problems and a lot of questions(specially act 2 of the warchief: shadow) but i will start with the bonecloset.
Now dont miss understand, i love age of empires 3 and i consider it the best of the series since it has destinguishable civilizations with unique units and not only diferent pictures but also avoids being slow like the age of empires 2 granpa (you may like it i dont)
That said rant ahead
My first question is why in the DE they didnt change the fucking story!!! Like so many things are fucking wrong.
Like they are willing to change almost all the story in the second act of the expansion but not the original campaings that were a mess.
You start in malta defending against ottomans, so all good till just after the second mission we get introduced into "an ancient stone library" that talks about the fountain of youth in america. Ancient stone library. IN THE 1500S the end of that campaing is in 1566, ancient my ass. Who the hell carved that? Alain Magnain's mother?
So you get sent by Alain Magnain (leader of the maltese knights and probably ficticious) to the new world to persue the Ottomans and stop them from getting to the fountain. Okay i can get going after the ottomans since you are part of a cristian knight order and most likely recently kicked from rhodes so yeah i could turn a blind eye. But then...
Then you get to the bew world and gets interesnting... fight a spaniard called Francisco Delgado, who despite sounding historical he isnt. And the only one that comes close to the name (and time) is a spanish monk that never visited the new world. Then defend the aztecs, and some incas for some random reason that i dont understand since you never reach the andes in this campaing
Capture the Ottoman and well it turns out that the circle was in the new world. AND WAS LEAD BY ALAIN. So intead of you know, telling morgan that Alain was part both of the maltese order and the boneguard, they fight. Morgan a man of principle decides to betray his commander.
I dont know what is more out of caracter, Alain being dumb and not telling Morgan, or Morgan Black going against his order.
And yes i know they spin it into Alain betrayed the order but makes no sense.
So you have scotman, a (presumably) british pirate and one ottoman fight against the leader of the Forever knights.
If Alain wanted to betray the order he could, i dont know, give temporally the grand master powers to Morgan (or someone else) abd lead the circle to the new world. Clearly he was important since he did lead the circle to the new world
Dialogue is not bad though i like it.
My favorite part was "im an ottoman. i have more gunpowder you could ever use."
Tumblr media
You do also get interesting mision desing that keeps teaching stuff in small steps, the first is in creating units and some unit counters, the second is more rounded towards get economy going and more general siege, the third into the naval part of the game, etc. And also one that teaches you about the experience system that is completly new to every player. And secont to lat one where you dont get gold mines but instead need to capture the spanish fleet that makes only gold and makes you contest the map.
So tldr; dumb story, dumb caracters, decent dialogue great gameplay 9/10 just ignore the story.

Lately I've been feeling like revisiting Age of Empires 2 or 3. Not that I have anyone other than the AI to play with ( I don’t feel like competitive online multiplayer with strangers). But I do have fond memories of playing as Britain/China with my brother on Spain/Japan against the AI. Also of filling the map with houses and towers. Iirc 3 and mythology had limits on certain units and buildings which was a bit disappointing, and the civs in those also played very differently from each other and 1 and 2 were more samey.
Also games could go for two or more hours because I liked to sample every unit and research every tech and upgrade between aging up. Not sure I have that time these days.
If I do pick them up again I should probably try other options lol.

Oh my god. Okay, so one funny thing about Age of Empires is that units not affiliated with any team belong to Mother Nature - or Gaia - on the game files. The color to that team is brown. For exemple, these capybaras the settlers can kill for food.
Tumblr media
There's some wild animals that you can control, in-game, usually as result of treasure loot. These animals have little collars on them so you can tell what team they belong to.
Like this jaguar.
Tumblr media
But when they're guarding treasures or are otherwise just wild animals, they still have the collars on. So you see these wild wolves who were already born in nature with brown little collars on them.
Tumblr media
Better yet, sometimes treasures will be guarded by humans, who, to remain neutral units unafiliated with any in-game team, must also be color-coded brown. So yeah, these cowboys here belong to Mother Nature.
Tumblr media
Everything in this game must be color-coded as belonging to a team, and the best part of that was in this cutscene where Morgan, upon arriving at the Americas, tells his men to "beware of any predators that might lurk in these woods. Be them animal or human."
Tumblr media
Upon which the camera pans to a jaguar wearing a red collar to indicate that it is an Enemy.
Tumblr media
I love this game.

jaheira x lae'zel; for @spicyraeman, who inspired this, because i literally discovered this pairing on your blog like, three days ago and i stayed up all night drawing this.
take this how you will, but the most probable scenario i can think of to pair with this is lae'zel just being frantic and over-protective after a fight, that lead to jaheira getting a concussion and (briefly) broken nose.
please forgive the terrible hands. hopefully the bruises make up for it - i love getting to colour bruises, they're so pretty.

my current ( & probably forever ) Roman empire is that a girl slowly developing a weak spot for a man, a lot older than her, but knows what boundaries not to cross. But a forbidden fruit always seems delicious until tasted. He notices it but doesn't act on it. It takes a little while for the girl to figure out that he knows, that he is aware, and suddenly its fireworks and rocket bursts. The man tells her how this is wrong ( while being inside her ofc ) and then, they part ways, just like that:") he does not corrupt her, just gives her a taste of forbidden fruit, enough to let her realize that she shouldn't settle for less, that it is just an infatuation that happens to all the girls of her age, be with her for enough time to let her make the choice of moving on.
