Hear me out: Those "the sun was yellower when I was a kid" conspiracy theorists? Yes, they should probably see a therapist, even just once, just to be sure they can get the help they may need, but

BUT!

The lenses in your eyes yellow as you age. They start off more transparent, and by the time someone is 18, 25, 40, especially when someone doesn't wear sunglasses or UV-protective eyeglasses, they've literally been UV-damaged and gain a yellow tinge.

This is a problem enough that, when I worked in an eye doctor's office for a few years (ABO/NCLE for all of em, 'natch), we were taught about this phenomenon.

It was a problem enough when someone who was older would get a cataract lens replacement (which are usually done one at a time, to avoid simultaneous complications or infections that could lead to temporary blindness), they would notice the hue difference between their new lens versus their old foggy one. Even if they only had one cataract and the other was clear (in that case you still get both done, one after the other, but start with the clouded one), the tone difference was noticeable.

Here's my hypothesis: when some of these people were younger, there was more *contrast* between sunlight and known light sources, like a specific brand of fluorescent lighting fixture in their home or similar. As they age, their lenses yellow, leading to less contrast between "blue" and "yellow" (cool or warm) colors, similar to wearing Hunter S. Thompson yellow aviator shooter shades:

Person who’s interested and thinking about watching RGU here, is Utena/Anthy a toxic ship? How is it portrayed and what is your general opinion about it?

So short answer? No, it's not a toxic ship. Long answer? Utena is about a lot of things, and one of its biggest themes is unhealthy relationships. Friendships, family bonds, and romantic relationships. It is a large scale dissection and deconstruction of how these relationships can become unhealthy and what can be done to fix them, if they can be fixed at all.

So, without spoilers, for the majority of the story the relationship between Utena and Anthy is unhealthy and kinda toxic, but the point is to show how they overcome it. Again, no spoilers, but there's a scene in the 38th?? episode I think that is one big thesis statement about this theme.

RGU is fearless when it comes to confronting dark subject matter. It is compassionate in its portrayal of these subjects, but it doesn't pull any punches. As such, there will be moments throughout where you'll think "wtf wtf wtf" and moments that will heal your spirit. Utena and Anthy have their share of both, but far more of the latter.

ok sorry the OTHER thing about lucienne is like. as previously stated she is dream's handpicked emissary from the waking world to the dreaming she's the diplomat in chief she's the translator she's the bridge. because the dreaming is, in a very real way, dream's own psyche, this is tantamount to giving lucienne a tremendous degree of access to his interiority and by transitive property also tantamount to entering into a deeply emotionally intimate relationship with her (unimportant for the purposes of this post whether that relationship is platonic or romantic).

now, in general, looking at the pattern of dream's close emotional relationships—dream doesn't share himself with people as a rule (beyond the access that all things that live have to the dreaming; but i'm talking about his self here, the one he doesn't like to acknowledge he even has), but when he does share with people, it's with people who have some shadow on the soul, so to speak. just looking at attested relationships in show canon, his deepest emotional connection seems to be with death, who embodies the duality of light and dark even better than he does himself. calliope is the muse of epic poetry—heroism and tragedy—and also bears the sort of divine pride that led her to cut dream off for hundreds or thousands of years when he wronged her. the less said about that other guy, the better, but he's no sunshine-rainbows-unicorns type—he's a soldier of fortune, a bandit and a killer, a man who profits from the sale of human life. even best bird matthew, in comix canon, had a sordid past that will maybe be partially retconned for the show but has still been gestured at.

dream likes the complicated ones. he's drawn to them. they speak to something in him that he won't acknowledge in himself (he has to be Whole, fully integrated, without reservation, because he is the king and he is the dreaming and if the dreaming ain't whole then the universe is in trouble—but he feels that ache nonetheless).

all that is to say: when people try to portray lucienne as dream's Designated Well-Adjusted Neurotypical Friend, i begin to harm and maim.
