What fans say:
Despicable me:
Gru's arc about abandoning evil and being redeemed because of his care for the girls is very adorable and wholesome. And the minions are actually funny in this one!
I really like the story and characters and message. I love seeing a supervillain become a single dad.
Wreck-it-Ralph:
It's been my favorite movie for about 10 years now. I love how rewatchable it is. There's a lot of detail, and it makes for a good, "Oh hey, I just noticed that!" when you rewatch it. The plot is enjoyable even if you know the plot twists! It's fun when it needs to be, and emotional when the right time calls for it.
It's been my favourite movie since I was 6 years old, it's super funny, well written and emotional, the design of the environments and characters are all so creative and a joy to look at. The climax is so powerful emotionally, the relationship between Ralph and Penelope is so wholesome and sweet. I could honestly go on for hours about this movie.
The way they use 3D animation to give a videogamey feel is fantastic. I love the details like the lower frame rate for the nicelanders and just how many cameos are in it. The story always gets me and the character designs are fantastic. I love the arcade animations for all the characters as well, they look authentic and very cute.

If DC Villains Had a Wreck-It Ralph-Type Support Meeting
Lex: Greetings fellow recovering villains and villainesses. Brainiac: Greetings, Luthor. Pamela: Really, "villainesses"? Why not just call us all villains? And since when is villainy a drug? Harley: I dunno, maybe he's just try'na be suuuper formal n' polite. Joker: *cackles* Lex: Well, it's arguably like a drug, Green Eggs and Pam. Joker: *cackles even harder* Pamela: You scrawny little—*sighs*—I promised I wouldn't... Lex: *rolls eyes* Moving on— Harley: *patting Pamela's back* I gotta question too, Lex. Didja hav'ta bring him here? *points at the Joker* Joker: *grins* Heyyyy babe! Miss me yet? Harley + Pamela: *scowl at the same time* Harley: Not with a 39 n' a half-foot pole, J. Bane: I have question as well. What is purpose of this meeting? What is your scheme? Brainiac: I wonder the same. In actuality I already am fully recovered from my past villainous ways. Lex: My "scheme" is to have you all shut up and listen to me so we can begin today's activities! Mr. Freeze: Chill out, Lex. Captain Cold: I'm sure we can all be cool for you. Grodd: We can but why are there no other gorillas present? This reeks of hyooman-typical discrimination! Joker: My dear simian friend, it's because you're one of a kind! Other gorillas can't also read, write or speak the same languages as the boring human and human-ish villains here do. Grodd: Hmmm. I suppose you're right. I am indeed in my own gorilla league. Cheetah: *using her tongue to clean herself, coughing up hair/fur onto the floor* Lex: Ghrrrrmmmm!

"Super Mario Bros: The Movie", "Wreck-it-Ralph", and the crucial presence of a story's purpose
If you haven't watched "Wreck-it-Ralph", I urge you to do so before reading this, because I'm gonna spoil it and it deserves better.
I promise you won't regret it.
I'm also gonna spoil "Super Mario Bros: The Movie", but it's not a spoiler to state that it stays perfectly loyal to the games, and that is all you need to know.
Two things before diving into this:
First and most importantly, this is a credo of "Wreck-it-Ralph is better", but saying "it's not as good" is not the same as "it's bad".
Second, you'll forgive me for going all post-grad literature student on you, but this is gonna talk about theme.
What is Mario Bros' problem? Why is he fighting this fight, what has he got to prove?
In the year of our girlboss 2023, it just isn't acceptable to reduce the princess to the object fought over by the male hero and the male antagonist, and so we got the interesting but ultimately meaningless conflict where Bowser has Mario's brother and wrongly believes Mario has his princess. It's about the right to violence, saving your hometown and proving the meanies who laughed at you wrong.
Problem number one: Mario's conflict goes no-where. His saving Luigi is not a struggle, is not something he does by having grown from his experiences and the lessons he learned. Him reaching Bowser's stronghold is kinda, in the most banal sense of his mastering the game mechanics as an in-story avatar of the audience who have themselves fumbled through the first few levels with the gamepad in their hands, but his fetching Luigi specifically is pure right-place-at-the-right-time coincidence. As was always obvious, of course, since his wish to save Luigi was as important as him saying "so how'll this save my brother" a whole three times to remind us that there's a reason he's not just going home. What really preoccupies Mario throughout the whole film is exploring the new world into which he's been iskeai'ed, because of course: the audience never did pay to watch a heartwarming story about brotherly love, but to see the settings of the games on the big screen.
In contrast, let's explore: What has is Wreck-it-Ralph's problem? Why is he fighting this fight, what has he got to prove?
youtube
Ralph is an outcast, probably because he's fated to play the part of the bad guy of his game, certainly not helped by his lacking tact when faced with the people who won't see him beyond this kind of proving them right. Ralph wants to be accepted and appreciated, and starts his story in the belief that to be appreciated, he needs to stop being the bad guy and be the hero instead.
youtube
The plot of the film is about Ralph trying to fix the mess after his first and only attempt at heroing ends in disaster. As a part of that, Ralph comes to realise that being a hero to one fellow outcast who no-one else helped means more to him than nominally being a hero by winning a game. But Ralph also does get to be a hero for real: By the end, the only thing that can save the day is the abilities which put him into the Bad Guy box he so desperately wanted to escape. He is good at wrecking things, but now he found the place where wrecking is exactly what is needed.
But theme, people. Because Ralph isn't the only one who saves the day by learning to embrace that which he wants to no longer be.
youtube
(for the suckers who watched this without the context of having seen the rest of the film: Vanellope's has been shunned and bullied because of her glitching, which she spends the whole film trying not to do but here utilises to reach Ralph in time)
Ralph's journey into self-acceptance after seing that he is more than his destined role - and having his "bad" qualities not only accepted, but celebrated by the people who previously shunned him - is ecchoed exactly in Vanellope. It is, moreover, mirrored in the film's real bad guy - who like Ralph destroys his own game to try and be the hero of another which he also ruins. But Turbo was the hero who became a villain because he failed to accept what Ralph does at the end of their battle: that even if others might be "better" in the larger story told, you are enough as just who you are
youtube
Turbo doesn't just take over another game in order to win glory: he abandons himself in the process, because the only way to get the fame he so wants is to be a player in the newer, shinier game. In that role he even becomes its king, and abuses that power to cast out the true princess and brand her not only as unwanted, but as a danger to the existence of the game. The root of Turbo's bad deeds isn't merely "he is evil", it is specifically his failures at accepting the lesson which lets Ralph find peace with who he is.
That being content as who you are is a necessity to thrive is perhaps best illutrated in Felix, Ralph's nemesis in game mechanics and the unknowing object of his jealousy. Felix never has known what it's like to be rejected and treated like a criminal, and that privilege lets Felix go about life with the confidence that he can fix it. Sure, we laugh at his romantic pursuit of Calhoun because hes half her height and with a goofy cartoon design, but in story? No-one thinks this is ridiculous, not even the tough-as-nails soldier whose solution to any problem is to point her gun at it. Of course the tiny janitor from the eighties platformer can land the babe from the shiny new FPS (if only she didn't come programmed with the saddest backstory ever)
youtube
"Wreck-it-Ralph" isn't a story about winning the game by beating the bad guy and finding your princess brother in the final castle. It's a fable about seeing the worth in yourself and appreciating the people around you not by the merits of what we say needs to be celebrated, but by the good they contribute by being who they are.
youtube
This story didn't need to happen in a video game, even though the narrative mechanics of the games help illustrate the point.
But "Super Mario Bros The Movie"? The video game franchis is the only reason that story is told. This doesn't make it a bad movie, but let's not kid ourselves: if the hero wasn't Mario and the villain wasn't Bowser, this film would not have been something we talked about on tumblr. It's fine! It's fun! But except for a memetic moment of Bowser serenading Peach, there is absolutely nothing memorable about it.

One thing I appreciate about Wreck-it-Ralph is the message. Not “it’s okay to be bad”, but rather, “everyone is good at something, and what you’re good at will be useful at some point in your life, even if at the moment it seems like a burden. Focus your efforts on doing your best and being kind.”
Ralph is good at breaking stuff. He’s super big, super strong, and everyone hates him for it because of his role in the game. Vanellope is glitchy, and she has a hard time staying in one spot or going along a path; as a result, everyone treats her like she’s dangerous to be around. But in the end, what they both want is just to be appreciated for who they are, to feel special and wanted.
Felix is really good at fixing things; with his golden hammer, whatever he touches is repaired. And that makes him really popular, since most people always need something to be fixed, in or outside the scripted game. Similarly, Turbo is really good at racing, and doesn’t want to accept that his game is less popular.
And in the end? Ralph is the one to save the day, because he’s really good at breaking things. Vanellope helps to make things better because she’s glitchy. Felix can’t really do much other than moral support, because his power really doesn’t lend itself to fighting bad guys.
The main difference between Felix and Turbo is that Felix is willing to change. By the end, he’s willing to share the spotlight, to be kind to others, and most importantly, to change his behavior. And he convinces others to follow suit- by the end, Ralph and Vanellope are celebrated for their abilities.
Ralph thought he wanted a medal; what he needed was kindness.

(Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes)
I drew Candlehead for my "What if Vanellope wasn't the one turned into a glitch" series. I wanted to make her candle un-lit to add to the idea that her code is a bit messed up or not complete. I also figured I should make the candle smaller, like a hairclip instead of a hat, so it won't look too much like her original look.
I know it's not perfect, but I hope you like it.

Wreck-It-Ralph (2012):
“ A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. “

I adore this movie so much. It may not have the most original story ever, but it has such a great roster of characters, so many refferences to different games and beautiful visuals. I love it!!!

Tabby Mutton lives and breathes her job, and would happily do it for the rest of her life. That doesn't mean that it is always easy, or even that it is always enjoyable. In fact, most of the time she finds that she is struggling to have a good time. There is a lot of pressure, backers that want her to win, and she finds it all too easy to take out her troubles on other people.

What fans say:
Anastasia:
Beautiful story and good songs.
Anya/Dmitri are the best animated love story. Ever.
The colors, the architecture, the character design, the clothing!!! The Once Upon a December scene in the old palace where people come out if the paintings on the wall??? the transition for Anya's old dirty clothes to her beautiful golden ballroom gown??? The character expressions and dialogue feel so real. Rasputin's song with all the bugs and the green glowing lamp. iwhzjam it's just so magical. There's a reason people always mistake Anastasia for a Disney film, it's because it's so beautifully animated and the songs are amazing. The plot is great even if it is historically inaccurate. Also Dimitri is hot af.

So. "Super Mario Bros. The movie"
It's generally a solid piece of craftmanship (animation, music, voice acting)
Everything this film did, "Wreck-it-Ralph" did better
Watch this space as I come back to the crucial presence of "theme", because that was what made the difference
