Yuri recs! Yuri is My Job!: A series that makes you think it'll be a comedy and then hits you nonstop with the spiciest of drama with each chapter escalating things even further than the last. Also packs some really strong critiques of Class S stories and their tropes still living on in yuri. Warui ga Watashi wa Yuri ja Nai (aka: Sorry, But I'm Not Into Yuri): Basically the greentext "I'm straight but *Proceeds to type out the gayest scenario possible* " of comedy yuri. Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out, So I Teamed Up With a Mythical Sorceress!: It's one of those "banished from the hero's party" series but the reason the MC got kicked out of her party was blatant and in your face misogyny. So her teaming up with an all powerful witch to get revenge on them is already way more justified then pretty much every "banished from the hero's party" revenge story. It's not exactly a subtle critic like RGU but honestly having a "fuck yeah, beat up the shit out of some misogynists and literally fight the patriarchy" series is nice. Especially in a sub-genre that usually sucks for female characters. School Zone Girls: A Nichijou/Daily Lives of High-School Boys style slapstick comedy of dumbasses but it's also yuri. They're all so stupid(affectionate)... Murciélago: This one is extremely hard to recommend unless your down with lots of ultra-violence/gore/sex and protag who is veeeeery much a serial killer. It's pretty fun and does have some really great action but you absolutely have to get use to the MC going from "she so silly" to "she just cheated on her yakuza girlfriend with a police coroner, the entirety on a lesbian coven and several single mothers" to "she just straight up a murc-ed some kids."... And also that she's drawn like a xxxHolic era Clamp character.

Funny thing about you mentioning Ratchet not liking anything non-Cybertronian, both Autobots and Decepticons got off lucky with a mostly normal Earth. I know a lot of different fandoms where Earth is so much more chaotic.

There's Kaiju No.8 with kaiju attacks being a very normal occurrence. Unlike Pacific Rim, the true source can't be reached, come in various sizes from human to skyscraper, there a good chunk of species settled into the wilderness, and the technology developed to handle these giant monsters are human sized exosuits that pack similar power to the Jaegers. Bots on both sides definitely have trouble since any kaiju living nearby will go territorial mode on their afts.

We got Resident Evil where viral threats are a very constant hazard. Cybertronians shouldn't worry about getting infected by mold/parasites/viruses that often cause these outbreaks. The concern comes from the monsters it spouts as some animals and humans don't just turn into simple zombies. A few have become kaiju sized monstrosities while some develop powers such as near Magneto level magnetism. If Smokescreen was squeamish with normal organics then he will absolutely hate this.

Then there's One Piece with its very diverse species and far greater oceans. We got literal sea monsters big enough to eat a bot whole to places with giant beasts or vicious flora that will can destroy boulders. Humans here being the most unpredictable threat as there are a large chunk who can obliterate mountains with sheer physical strength. We also got giants, dwarves, beast men, mermaids/merman, and even tribal angels that are just as dangerous. Not even gonna touch the fact there's sea devil enchanted capable of going living creatures super powers but can potentially give sentience to inanimate objects. Imagine the Allspark turning into a deer that can obliterate someone all because it got near such a fruit.

Plain ass earth is more manageable than these other options.

It's also why I love thinking about an Earth where mythology, folklore, and urban tales were real at one point.

Mankind would have lived among gods and monsters and strange peoples, so thinking about all those implications, relationships, and roles Man would have shared with such beings is really fascinating, especially when humans are strange creatures themselves.

So that would also mean there are still places available to find them...

Imagine if they landed with the SCP Foundation? Or Nightvale? Supernatural? The universe of Old Gods of Appalachia or xxxHolic? American Gods? Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or the Ancient Magnus' Bride? The Marvel/DC universe? Danny Phantom, Generator Rex, A Certain Scientific Railgun, or My Hero Academia?

And then add the tidbit that Cybertron and Earth are long-lost cousins!? Oh, the absolute pandemonium that would happen with a cyberization in TFP or Bayverse!

I do not condone smoking and you should never take it up for a number of health related reasons buuuuut since we gave Garmadon an addiction to old school hard drugs like cocaine and heroin.

And I rewatched the anime xxxholic and fell down the rabbit hole of the character Yuuko smoking and just looking pretty in general.

Also went down a rabbit hole about smoking methods throughout history so

Garmadon absolutely using a kiseru which is a traditional Japanese smoking pipe at one point.

Samurai irl even used them as makeshift weapons.

Because fuck it the venom’s already ruined my life might as well look cool before I go out.

Garmadon only really quit smoking when Misako got pregnant and Lloyd was born.

He takes the habit back up when he gets banished to the underworld because the Skulkin have somehow managed to get Kizami (finely shredded tobbaco that looks like hair) to grow in the underworld

Even when he’s returned to the bounty and from his trek to the realm of madness he smokes.

Mainly as a crutch to deal with the stress

At least Garmadon takes his smoking outside and tries to mask the scent.

Speaking from my experience with smokers, Garmadon is rapid about no one else smoking.

After Rebooted Kai almost started, but Sensei Garmadon materialized next to him and ripped the pack from his hands.

Wu and Lloyd had both been grounded for touching Garmadon's tobacco while cleaning (yes, he did ground his adult brother)

Once, when him and Misako were dating, he ate a cigarette to keep her from asking for one.

are you a fan of any shojo/josei works?

Wish I were! Josei stories in particular seem to run the gamut of mature stories in interesting locations that don’t really fit to any one mold or trope, but I read manga on an irregular basis and rarely read something I haven’t already seen others talking about. There’s doubtless some really good stuff out there…but the few that I have tried (Fruits Basket, Ao Haru Ride) don’t fit my preference for either loud, dumb, and action-packed. In general I’m not a fan of m/f romances and the tropes associated with them in female-targeted manga (the overbearing/controlling older guy, the clumsy everygirl, the female friends who function mostly as cheerleaders) which makes it hard to get into some stuff.

Shoujo/josei that I have enjoyed are

BANANA FISH, a violent thriller/action subtextual BL that reads as a bizarre fusion of The Wire and That One Darkfic You Read At Age 15, a tight series with allowances for 80s + bl tropes that should absolutely be read with a list of CWs.

Shimanami Tasogare/Our Dreams At Dusk, a sort of pan-demographic slice of life with some melodramatic moments, you’ve doubtless heard of it but it is as good as they say. A quick and impactful read, I want to read the mangaka’s other works but I really need to emotionally prepare myself first lol.

GSNK, it’s funny!

Hakuouki. Purely a matter of timing. I watched it as my third anime ever and became obsessed with the way the side characters were built up in drama CDs and bonus content, many of which only exist as translated on the tokio-fujita LJ by a person who is now unfortunately deceased(?) but back in the day successfully pulled a minor scam or two within the fandom. Pretty mid, has all the same fatal flaws as any VN adaptation, interesting cast and ideas HAMSTRUNG by having to stick to the main m/f romance, women robbed of all relevance and agency, somehow the male protag’s love interest in the prequel is far better written than the female protag. This series is indivisible from my love of all animanga so I can’t tell how good or bad it is. I can only say that I spent a very very long time thinking about it. Classic shinsengumi story, Japan is torn by a civil war between traditionalist and modernizing factions, but also there are magically enhanced vampiresoldiers and a line of bloodsucking demons seeking to continue their race through eugenic matchups. It’s Anime as anything.

There are a few others that fall into josei/shoujo-adjacent but that aren’t officially in the category I think? After Hours (mature and sedate slice of life romance), No. 6 (slow biological sci fi), Shadows House (ontological mystery thriller) are all series I’ve enjoyed but never quite got to ‘fan’ except for Shadows House, which I really need to catch up on

Bonus rec: Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East is as far as I can tell just a cringe, tropey bl-inflected adventure with godawful pacing that I somehow watched in grade 10? Absolutely would not recommend for a quality watch but it’s obscure enough that it has a certain novelty.

I’ve rb’d a few josei/shoujo recs for future references as I keep searching for something to vibe with so all recommendations are welcome! Next one I am considering a read of is XXXHolic, haven’t yet started because while the pros are that it is CLAMP, the cons are that it is also CLAMP and my list of works to consume is too long to spend time trying to figure out whose legs are whose.

If you’re looking for manga to read, I have to recommend Screentone Club podcast! They do first-volume reviews of mostly new manga without anime adaptations that hit the sweet spot of brief, literate, and indicative without being spoilery. Doesn’t work well for series that get good in the 8th volume, but it’s my go-to for broadening my awareness of the current scene.

I'm in zoom class reading this. And I had to turn off the camera because my eyes water whenever I think about the ending. Shit was so unfair.

They were always together in my head, canon really tore my heart.

But anyways we already know that Doumeki is a picky eater and has a love for whatever Watanuki cooks. So expect Watanuki to pack him more lunch than usual and then proceed to bark at him for not saying thank you or tasting the food.

"You can at least try to enjoy the flavour you pig!"

"It's good. Like usual." Cue Watanuki being lowkey happy.

As for Watanuki he might still be uptight towards Doumeki, complaining about how his face is so emotionless but at the same time he'll pay attention to how Doumeki feels. He's one of the few that can decipher his facial reactions (if he has any).

Doumeki is more keen to pick up Watanuki from Yuko's place after work is over. I don't think they're the type to hold hands in public often but maybe pinky holding can happen after a particularly hard day at work.

Expect mini dates in the park, fast food restaurant, or perhaps just study sessions. Although it's really just Watanuki hounding Doumeki who is covering his ears again.

If Watanuki won't shut up Doumeki can kiss his fingers or cheeks and he'll be quiet for hours, face beet red. Watanuki is very shy about his kisses. Especially public ones. It's quick, he smashes his lips too roughly on Doumeki's face before walking away but sometimes just maybe, Doumeki's eyes soften.

A spoiler but when Doumeki gives half his eyesight to Watanuki, he appreciates him more. Watanuki struggles with self worth and time and time again Doumeki was always by his side. He isn't good with his words so he cooks up a huge meal.

They share a kiss and manga afterwords. Yuko gave him the day off.

They were already goals in canon.
