As an experienced (and talented) fanfic author: Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting to write? I'm really enjoying it but I'm also starting to struggle with self-doubt/anxiety/feelings of inferiority to other writers.

Oooft, it's weird to hear the word experienced attached to my fic writing career. It feels like yesterday I was hyperventilating at my computer while posting my first wilmon fic hahaha. And thank you for calling me talented, I appreciate that 🥺.

As far as advice goes, I'd honestly say the thing that helped me the most with the anxiety of posting, is to just not take yourself or writing too seriously. For me fanfic is a playground to try out different writing styles and techniques and stories that I might not feel super confident attaching my real name.

I also think by bringing less intensity in making sure everything I post is perfect, I've given myself permission to 'mess up' and feel okay about it. Which has ultimately made posting so much more enjoyable and less scary. I want to write books irl, so having fic writing as a (relatively) consequence free environment really helps take the anxiety away.

When it comes to feeling an inferiority to other writers, I'm afraid that's a battle I've yet to overcome. It's hard not compare yourself to other writers, especially when there are soooo many talented authors in this fandom. But a while back a friend of mine reminded me of this post (I tried to find the original post but I couldn't I'm sorry) and I always come back to it when I'm feeling a bit down.

Writing is hard and it's difficult not to take every critique to heart or to compare yourself to others. Just try to remember that everyone's writing journey is different, and the more you do it, the better you'll get. Hell, the other day I reread something I posted nearly 2 years ago and I have definitely improved (thank god lol). So I feel like as long as you can look back and appreciate the accomplishments you've made, even if it's posting your first fic, then you're succeeding no matter what anyone else is doing or writing. The hardest part is simply starting, and if you can do that, then you'll be taking the fandom by storm in no time 💜.

Wille’s Month 2024-

prompt 14- Mental Health

As mental health is kinda my thing, I thought I would gather some fanfiction recommendations where Wille’s mental health is integral to the story as well as beautifully represented. One of the thing I really enjoy about YR fans and writers (or the little bubble I have curated for myself) is the way everyone validates, supports and makes space for mental health.

Everyone’s mental health journey is personal and I feel that truth in our writers stories, in how they embody Wille and Simon, and sometimes, I think I can even hear their therapist’s voices whispering from in between the lines. Even knowing not everyone is writing from personal experience, I still can’t help but feel grateful for the way writers make us feel and understand their struggles with constant care and compassion.

Because its Wille’s Month, I have tried to give suggestions where Wille’s MH is at the forefront or equally present and some variation in presentation - depression, body dismorphia, trauma/ptsd, ocd, substance abuse, autism, suicide, self-harm, burn-out, disordered eating and grief. Please mind the tags in each story.

There are also so many stunning depictions where Simon’s struggle is the louder voice, and it absolutely pains me not to include some of those here, but if people are interested, I would be happy to share Simon’s list too.

Today at work someone broke down into tears, in a very visible way, while they were trying to say something important during an event. The emotions were raw and welcome, but the person was really struggling. And as someone with some institutional responsibility, but also as a human, i wanted to comfort her - and my first instinct was to reach out and hug her.

But then i remembered the countless fics i've read with descriptions of Wille, or Simon, or Sara, having a breakdown, and how it can be deeply unsettling and uncomfortable to be touched out of nowhere when you're feeling that way. So I caught myself and I asked for her consent before touching her shoulder. She said yes, and said afterwards the physical contact was really helpful and comforting.

Just putting this on here as a gentle reminder that your writing matters. Thank you!

A wild detail about cassian’s character is that he apparently managed to keep a baby alive without grown adults around from presumably the age of like. Six

#Mark this down as maybe the writers not thinking it through but the implication he (and the kids in kenari but #Look at how she chases him and relies on him) #Managed to feed and care for literally a baby is a wild detail about his characte #Kerri is about the littlest kiddo there and presumably the adults were killed when he was six #So he’s been taking care of her since then #Cassian andor #there’s something about the fact he looks after the droids..: maarva’a heating…. Ulaf…. B2…. #The logical extension of him being a 20 yr old with a like 15 year old minor charge he’s the guardian of. Not soemthinf I’ve seen explored #Terribly much in fics

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? I think it’s One, two, three, four, five, sex on my mind aka sex shop au. This was such a ridiculous idea and we executed it with a passion and fun level that just made it irresistibly fun.

What work of yours has the most hits?

As this was the year of the red white and royal blue movie astoundingly the one fic I wrote for the fandom, Midnight Icecream, won by nearly double the hits than my others.

What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? Sex shop au. Normally people comment less on E-rated fics.

Favourite work you wrote this year? I have to name two, I can’t chose. It’s either The Prince and the Popstar or Sex Shop AU.

Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

“Simon, we are an inclusive group. It’s an adult queer romance book club, I doubt that anything you are wearing could–” Wille trails off with a splutter and stares at him as Simon opens his coat and shrugs out of it. Simon doesn’t know if he should feel self-conscious or proud that he made an obvious man of words lose them with cutout tights and a glittery mesh top under his big, violet fleece scarf. It really does leave very little to the imagination, he thinks to himself as he unwraps the fleece. Wille clears his throat, squeezes out “I’ll get you a hoodie,” and turns on his heel to speed walk to the other direction of the shop. 

29. Biggest surprise while writing this year? How well all four coops with @pagegirlinwriting went and how much better of a writer it made me. It challenges you if you have to keep up to another excellent writer.

i realised the "antis" thing and the age-old joy of shipwars is one reason i don't comment on fic as much as i would otherwise - there's this fear that appears that the author will click through to my own Works and see that i have written The Bad Pairing (whichever one that is for that person, which i mostly have no way of knowing) or some trope that enrages them and they'll like. block me and/or reply angrily. as far as i know this has never actually happened to me and yet for some reason i still worry about it.

#the downside of multishipping is that you can end up writing EVERYONE'S NoTP at least once #btw one of the main reason i tag posts on tumblr with the relevant pairings is so people can filter it out if they want to #but like. if i comment on 10 yr old thorki fic will the author get offended by my sylki fics? #and will the sylki writer be angered when they see the thorki ones? #is this because 15 years ago someone on LiveJournal called me an “evil shipper troll” for a comment whose content i remember nothing of? #possibly! #gonna admit the “get followed by someone who has unfollowed me by the time i see the notification” MIGHT be getting to me a bit D: #anyway i'll try to comment more on things and to reblog things. at the risk of being blocked or flamed or whatever.

An update on me

Hi friends. I don't know who's going to see this, but I thought I'd get it out there in one way or another.

Basically, I'm not going write Young Royals fanfic anymore. I know I have a couple unfinished wips (which I do hope to one day finish), but right now writing is starting to feel like a chore and I need a break from it. I'm sorry if you're waiting on dwoht updates or are waiting for your missing moment request to be posted, but I'd rather put it on pause and come back with stories I'm proud of and that you guys will actually enjoy reading.

I'm still in love with yr and wilmon and really hope to get back into it one day, but I don't know when that day will be. I'll still be relatively active on tumblr, so if anyone ever wants to chat my ask is always open.
