“zero sum game” by roadtripwithlucifer
no words. like actually zero words (iykyk).
No but seriously this is one of the BEST BKDK fics I have read. it’s got the angst, the fluff, the emotions, the rizz, the drama, the smut, the action, the delicious character work, the shock…. like it’s everything you want in a fic. The writer is hilarious and has their own ongoing memes / crisis in the author notes which makes it even better. I will be forever reading this story over and over. If you’ve never read this monster of a fic then do it now….it’s taken me a few days to read it because you have to READ it and not skim it to really get the full flavor. It’s an amazing story and I love love love it.

A Proposal to Solve the Pronoun Culture Battle
I was thinking the other day that there are already gender-neutral second person singular pronouns in modern (if archaic) English: thee, thou, thy, thine, and singular ye. I propose we make a serious effort and bring them back.
Even though they are not used in everyday speech often, people still understand them almost intuitively.
Usage
Thee - means singular you, her, or him as the subject of a sentence: I give thee thy book.
Thou - informal singular you, she, or he as the object of a sentence: Thou have/has many of thine odds and ends strewn about!
Thy - singular possessive pronoun as your, her, or his when preceding a word stating with a consonant: Thy nose is warty and misshapen, ye varlet!
Thine - singular possessive pronoun for words starting with a vowel: I dream of thine eyes of tawny gold, so bright and beautiful are they.
Ye - singular or plural second person form of you - Fly thee away, ye scalawag, before thy buttocks be thoroughly kicked!
You - formal singular or plural pronoun as the subject of a sentence. You are the Mayor of Burgerville, Mayor McCheese. Thank you for your efforts to build this community library! This use as formal will probably be disregarded, but that’s the historical context.
Your - formal singular or plural possessive pronoun: get off my lawn, you cretinous urchins; your lawn darts are ruining my daffodils!
She, He - gendered second person singular pronouns. S/he has been dancing on the roof in the rain; I hope she doesn’t fall off!
Me - first person as object: Jennifer threw the football in a perfect spiral to me; thirty meters is an amazing distance!
My, Mine - first person possessive pronouns where the next word starts with a consonant or vowel respectively: my book was sitting upon mine octagonal coffee table. I know this an archaic usage, but it would bookend with thy and thine nicely.
Just as an aside, mine and my had also been used as thine and thy had been used: before vowel led or consonant led words.
In my opinion, the gendered pronouns would eventually be used less frequently eventually, because in most instances, the gender of the person is not relevant. That would probably take a generation or two to come to fruition.
So, we have: I, me, my, mine, she, her, hers, he him, his, thou, thee, thy, thine, ye, you, your, yours, they, them, theirs.
This also solves the problem of singular they referring to a known individual, although it will still be used to refer to singular and plural unknown persons and known and unknown things.
There, I’ve solved the pronoun problem!

Another gem by Wendy Cope, In honour of International Women’s Day:
Differences of Opinion
HE TELLS HER
He tells her that the earth is flat —
He knows the facts, and that is that.
In altercations fierce and long
She tries her best to prove him wrong.
But he has learned to argue well.
He calls her arguments unsound
And often asks her not to yell.
She cannot win. He stands his ground.
The planet goes on being round.

Jakarta.
After 4 long years.
I am now part of the esteemed division in my company, where the self-proclaimed “the smartest” people are. It doesn’t make sense at all if you ask me. I guess I have always been a social science kind of person, only didn’t know how what exactly that is before my master. My biggest takeaway from my master is the profound love of development econ that I found there, a whole world of wonder that quench my thirst.
I have always thought economics is too cold, too unfeeling. It talks about efficiency and market allocation as if it’s not affecting real human, who are suffering in the name of efficiency. The invisible hand who suspiciously favours those who could give more to it, well, to be fair, it is called the invisible hand, not the just hand. I’m so fed up with people glorifying models, as if it holds the answer to all social questions, which I can tell you 100000%, it doesn’t.
So being part of crème de la crème in this very distinguish institutions doesn’t bring joy to me, at all. I find it lacks the stimulating discussions, and a lot more backstabbing and office politic intricacy, which I detest to the core of my cell. The work I did here is not even half of what I had to do back in my previous dept or Bali, but the people, oh God, the people.
I keep telling everyone I don’t belong here, and they brought out the fact that I graduated from the top 3 econ school in the world, of course I belong here. But see, Hercules did all the tasks given to him, and he was granted the status of demigod. But eventually (at least in the Disney version), he realized he doesn’t belong in Olympus, his realm is down in the foot of the mountain. The same is true for me. Just because one is capable or deserving, doesn't mean one belongs.
I was also, absolutely horrified when the head of my division suggested months ago for us to do a charity as part of the social outreach. That’s when he said, let’s find the poorest, most broken down orphanage so that it would be good for us. Like, WTF?
Why does gratefulness have to be a zero-sum game, where in order for one to be grateful the other must suffer? Why can’t we feel grateful for the sake of gratefulness itself?
Don’t even let me start on the whatever blueprints I am working on. Blueprints for digitalisation in payment system: for an inclusive future. But nowhere in that blueprint talks about those at the bottom 40%, who couldn’t even afford to save, let alone purchasing a phone. Their cognitive ability is so overwhelmed by the various problems they need to solve, limiting them to see beyond today. When I raised this issue, the answer is that well, it would be inclusive for those already fit the basic assumption but still not benefiting from them. I laughed. How dare we say an “inclusive” future when our definition of inclusive itself is already exclusive?
If there in one thing that I could say I detest the most, it’s hypocrisy. And now I become part of the machine. What a world.

Incredible 20 minute ted talk but beloved conductor (and author) Itay Talgram on leadership.
One favorite quote: (On the conductor Richardo Muti’s imposing, “over-clear” and controling style, in which one story is told as opposed to the stories of everyone in the orchestra. And that story is of Richardo Muti’s interpretation of Mozart). “And you know what happened to Muti? Three years ago he got a letter signed by all 700 employees of La Scala, musical employees, I mean the musicians, saying, "You're a great conductor. We don't want to work with you. Please resign." (Laughter) "Why? Because you don't let us develop. You're using us as instruments, not as partners. And our joy of music, etc., etc. ..." So he had to resign. Isn't that nice? (Laughter) He's a nice guy. He's a really nice guy. Well, can you do it with less control, or with a different kind of control?”
An effective conductor has joy (especially in the beautiful work of his or her musicians), makes room for his musician’s stories (interpretations), and does have the ability to have authority when needed. He gives his musicians autonomy (which makes them happy) and creates a partnership between two different levels of control, so that “control is no longer a zero sum game.”

there’s this rush and this pressure, sometimes, for huge, mind-blowing numbers on ao3. thousands of kudos and comments and ppl obsessing over ratios, but like - there’s something so incredibly wonderful about, idk, even ten kudos. ten? you mean ten people, TEN total strangers, found something I wrote and clicked on it and read it and liked it? ten comments: you mean ten people took the time to tell me what they thought about my work, took the time and energy to write about MY WORK in their little comment bubble? ten people?? fifty?? one hundred???
but even just one - if one single person took the time out of their day to tell me how much they appreciate the little bit of my soul I just put out into the world - idk, it just means everything, doesn’t it?

He simply can’t get past the mental roadblock of ‘how many times does sacrificing his life equal to atonement?’
The best answer Katsuki has is ‘as many as it takes to save him.’ But it’s an insane answer, one that admits that not only has he tried to die for Izuku Midoriya twice now, but he’d do it again. He’s do it a hundred more times. He’d do it until he was successful. There’s no reality in which he’ll do anything smaller than give his everything to ensure Deku is safe.
Wow anyway everything I ever wrote in zsg is 100% true

idk why there's so much discussion around the ~*morality of traumadumping*~ when it's a VERY solvable social conundrum. all you need to do is ask something like "hey is it ok if i talk about this thing? it's kind of heavy" and respect the answer

Adrien is so tired of the new wave of fangirls every time he makes it to the Vogue's most eligible bachelors list. so Marinette jokingly suggests this year he should date someone while the results are being complied, thus avoiding making the list.
but Adrien thinks, dragging an unwitting girl into this and dropping her the next week would just be cruel. and Marinette thinks, as Adrien's very good friend and achingly platonic superhero partner, she should have really shut up instead of offering to help.

how does one cope with knowing that every moment of their happiness can only exist with the continued exploitation of colonized nations. like even if i kill myself it wont be enough and even if i devote my life to change it wont be enough because all forms of my happiness are predicated on theft and destruction.
