Continuing my Very Good Weekend. This morning I met my fae baes for Clit Lit (our spicy bookclub)! We had brunch and mimosas in Yellow Springs, then went book and 🍃 shopping, and saw a pretty church building.
And then later TJ and I went out for dinner since I had a gift card from my neighbor (she's elderly and I painted her porch for her. I told her she didn't need to pay me anything so she surprised me with a card instead. She's such a sweet old lady.)
My weekend continues with this beautiful biscuit pot pie I made for dinner. I was dubious at first but the recipe came out perfectly and it was so good!
I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.
Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.
Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!
Went to the Columbus Zoo yesterday to watch the Solar Eclipse since we were right in the line of totality.
I was absolutely moved to tears, it was such a beautiful and monumental event.
I'm going to have to paint this later, it was incredible. Afterwards, so many of our friends posted their pictures and experience in our group chat - it was so wonderful to see everyone experiencing this event - separate but together ❤️
We had our book club meet up today! Went to breakfast at Emmett's and then to the Book Loft in German Village. I left with a little stack of books - and then came come and cuddled up with the World's Cutest Dog (tm) for lazy Sunday afternoon.
Great time today at the Columbus Toy and Game show with my good friend R!
We had so much fun looking at all the vintage toys, and playing this weird Japanese FPS Rockband Hybrid? 😂
Yesterday we met J for lunch at the Rusty Bucket in Easton and then all went to Barnes and Noble together. I got several more new books to read lol. J is going to be joining our Pathfinder game - how exciting!
