I'm reading a paper that talks about how in sappho 31 she pays very little attention to the man whereas in catullus 51 he can't quite seem to let him go, and while I understand the point being made about male rivalry. I also can't help thinking this is exactly what you get when a bi guy translates a lesbian's poetry aldhjskdf

does anyone know a good online english-latin or english-ancient greek dictionary/translator ? i have websites to translate latin/greek words into english but not the other way around
i need to write a birthday card for friday in either latin or ancient greek and the thing is i’ve only been studying these languages for a few months. i can kinda write about soldiers going to war but somehow i can’t say ‘happy birthday, i’m glad i met you, you’re a nice person’

i’m tired of failing classes that i find interesting, just because the things we need to know are not things my brain can learn. i still haven’t found a method to learn history in a way that works for uni. and my executive dysfunction is not helping, end-of-term exams are killing me (current daily routine is 1) not sleeping 2) sobbing during every exam)
latin and greek are saving me though !! i’ll definitely pass my semester but probably not with grades as good as i need (16/20). i just can’t manage to do well in roman history and i feel so ashamed about it because it’s interesting ! i like it ! usually i only struggle that much with classes that i don’t like.
anyway i just submitted an essay (short, only 4500 words and that’s already more than what was asked of us) on the imperial cult from Augustus to Domitian and hopefully i’ll get ONE good grade thanks to this. because i worked quite effectively and it’s the kind of work i’m able to do, what i struggle with are in-class exams (which represent 85% of exams in this class)

there’s this girl in my year who talks about mark antony about 5 times a day at least (usually more) and it’s growing on me fr… recently i can’t stop thinking about the end of the republic… i had 5 hours a week of classes on it this semester but her obsession with mark antony and the second triumvirate isn’t helping
gods i love (= hate) the romans they were amazing (= terrible people) and the rumors on everyone are wonderful

having to reassure my mother about the fact that i want to medically transition is both funny and sad. i thought making her read stone butch blues would help but it didn’t (i think she still liked it tho). i still have to explain to her that i’m transitioning toward queer masculinities and not toward cishet manhood. it’s exhausting.
she has this weird idea that masculinity is inherently toxic and that i’m betraying women if i want to look like a guy. she keeps telling me about the changes and how male puberty is basically disgusting, just because she is “worried” for me/my body. at this point i find myself laughing about it sometimes.
like, come on. my scars due to past self harm will probably never fade away. i used to starve myself. i’m physically disabled. my body is bad enough already, testosterone doesn’t have anything left to “ruin” !
anyway, i try my best to explain to her how subverting masculinity is important, and how i can want to medically transition without wanting to be a cis man and while still identifying as a lesbian. and when the conversation is over i go sit by my altars and i pray to deities that are very transsexual themselves and very supportive of my queerness

🌙 Subtle Artemis Worship 🦌
Spend time out in nature (e.g. go on a hike, take a walk outside, visit a nature preserve, etc.)
Dancing, especially at night and to music that makes you feel wild and free
Playing an instrument (although this is more for Apollo, I believe it also works as a form of Artemis worship)
Wearing jewelry that reminds you of her
Having imagery of deer, horses, or dogs around
Having literally any sort of animal symbolism around (she is a Goddess of Animals)
Investing in nature/animal conservation efforts (can simply be spreading the word if you can't afford to donate or volunteer)
Creating art of your favorite flower, plant, or animal
Keeping a picture of her in your wallet
Taking a walk outside during the crescent or full moon (only if it is safe in your area to do so)
Learning about self-defense (I feel dedicating a pocket knife, if legal, to her is a great idea)
Learning archery
Befriending neighborhood animals, such as cats, birds, or dogs; leaving food out for them
Lighting a bonfire with friends and having a good time together; dancing around it is especially great (please be safe about doing so; I don't recommend drinking first)
Star-gazing and moon-gazing
Showing compassion to others, such as through volunteer work or holding doors
Taking a warm bath at night
Having a candle that reminds you of her (no altar needed)
Wearing animal-inspired outfits or doing animal-inspired makeup
Visiting a local zoo, aquarium, or butterfly pavilion; taking the time to learn about new creatures
Watching nature documentaries or movies about animals (it can be movies/shows starring anthropomorphic animals)
Being curious about local fauna and flora
Learning how to safely forage for food, such as picking berries or mushrooms
Meditating in the dark of the night, especially on a crescent or full moon
Making a list of your goals; focus on completing these one step at a time
Taking new risks, especially ones that give you a sense of thrill and excitement
Sending kind messages to loved ones, especially those having a difficult time
Learning to prioritize your own well-being; taking care of yourself first and foremost
-
May add to this later! For now, this is my list of discreet ways to worship Artemis. I hope someone finds it helpful. Take care, everyone! 💚

this semester is awful, i just want it to be over already. my mental health has been getting worse, i don’t even want to talk about my physical health, and i’ve generally been miserable. i’m behind everything in multiple classes. the thing is, my grades are definitely high enough to pass the semester (i just need a 10/20 for this), except i need way higher grades (≈16/20). the french school system is bullshit, so everyone knows the grades aren’t representative, and if i want to study abroad one day i basically need full scores in everything or i won’t be accepted. like, schools abroad consider a 12/20 to mean we’ve failed the class. my first semester’s grades were amazing but it’s all going downhill this semester and it’s so frustrating. i can’t even listen in class so ofc i can’t do these 10 pages essays for next week and i won’t be ready for the "you have 3 hours to tell me absolutely everything that happened in this time period and it needs to be at least 9 pages" final exams. also my disability accommodations are either useless or not respected ! i’m exhausted.

it was so good btw. I love it when academic books are easy to understand
and I’ve been rereading the Odyssey this past week, I’m at Book XX right now (I’ve been reading very slowly because of uni). I’m using tabs to keep track of every single time Odysseus lies or cries. there are a lot. the Odyssey is just him lying and crying. or his family crying and him lying to them.
currently reading The Tears of Achilles by Hélène Monsacré to prepare for my rereading of the homeric epics… it’s so interesting

i have not listened to anything in my roman history class this semester because my disabilities were having fun being disabling, so i’m extremely ignorant on roman/latin stuff. but classicists on tumblr make me want to study it intensely… it suddenly sounds much more interesting than in our lectures about provinces and economy and battles with too many dates and too many names. maybe this (the urge to understand online memes) will give me enough motivation to not fail my end of term exam in this class

I really wish I could make my cane into a devotional item for Hermes and/or Hephaistos. but I can’t, because it’s often on the floor, dirty, I get dust and mud on it. also I can’t figure out a way to make it pretty.
but I live through my OCs so one of them has the cane of my dreams lmao

Hey your response on the post about Artemis and healing, on how you too feel issues with cities and isolation-- I cried. I felt so seen and understood and I think I was meant to see that today. Thank you. I know that post was circulating a while ago, but I just wanted to say it touched me deeply and resonated with me.
I’m so glad it could resonate with others and make you feel seen 💙
