A Different Homecoming
It took effort not to grab Stephenâs handâto make sure he was still thereâas Tony stepped off of the plane. He didnât, didnât even look back as he strode forward to where Pepper and Happy stood beside the car, the sun too warm where it beat down on him.
He tried for a grin, even as he knew the expression was a swing and a miss as he took in Pepper in front of him, her eyes red, her hair just a little less put together than normal, her appearance just a little worn. âYour eyes are red. A few tears for your long lost boss?â
Pepper tried for her own smile, but it was just as weak as he suspected his own had been. âTears of joy. I hate job hunting.â
âYeah, well vacationâs over.â He looked back at Stephen. He looked tired, haggard. He looked how Tony felt. âCome on,â he said, voice going softer. âGet into the car.â
Stephen nodded, and Tony pushed him gently into the car, following after him and letting Pepper slide in and close the door behind them.
He could see the way Pepper watched Stephen; he wondered just what Rhodey had told her, what message heâd had about the man that Tony hadnât let out of his sight since theyâd escaped that cave.
Though at least that was mutual. Stephen was just as disinclined to let Tony out of his sight as Tony was to let Stephen out of his.
Trauma, Rhodey had called it.
Tony thought it was closer to a mix of trust and desperation. But then, maybe that was what trauma was, holding desperately to the only things left you could trust.
âWhere to, Boss?â Happy asked him, voice almost gentle in a way that felt strange from Happy.
âTo the hospital,â Pepper ordered.
âNo.â Just the thought of it made Tonyâs skin crawl. Of strangersâ hands touching him, of their eyes on the reactor in his chest.
âTony,â Stephenâs voice was quiet, but no less firm for it. âYou need a doctor.â
âYouâre a doctor,â Tony protested. He grabbed Stephenâs hand, bringing it up to rest on his chest right over the arc reactor. âAnd youâre the only one I trust with this.â Yinsen had died on them, Stephen was the only one he had left.
A complicated look crossed Stephenâs face. Reluctance, because Stephen, unlike him, did trust doctors. Understanding because Stephen knew perfectly just how vulnerable Tony was right now. âFine. For now.â
It was as much of a win as Tony was likely to get.
âTony.â This time it was Pepperâs turn to be remonstrating. âYou have toââ
âI donât have to do anything,â Tony snapped, flinching a little at his own tone. He clenched at Stephenâs hand where he was still holding it. âWeâve been held captive in a cave for three months. I donât have to do anything.â Pepper pursed her lips but nodded. âBut there are three things that I want to do. I want an American Cheeseburger.â
Stephen sighed. âTony.â
Tony ignored him. Because if anyone would convince him to change his mind, it was Stephen. Right now Tony didnât want to be convinced to be ârationalâ, he just⌠he needed this.
âI want someone to find out what happened to a doctor named Christine PalmerââÂ
Stephen stiffened at that It was his turn to tighten his grip around Tonyâs hand to the point where it almost hurt. Tony could only silently pray that Stephenâs best friend was still out there somewhere, safe and sound. The two of them had been together, a short stint with doctors without borders, when Stephen had been taken. The question of her fate had haunted Stephen almost as much as the captivity had.
ââAnd I want you to call for a press conference.â
âA press conference?â Confusion colored Pepperâs tone, but Tony didnât have the energy to try to explain everything to her.
âYes.â He doubted it would be hard to organize, the media would be frothing at the mouth to get ahold of him. They werenât going to like what he had to say, however.
But that sure as hell wasnât going to stop Tony from saying it.

Okay but like imagine if Peter and Stephen are our doing something and Peter gets hurt. Stephen rushes him to the nearest hospital which is his old one, and all his old coworkers see him freaking out like a dad. And theyâre like âwho is this kid??â And heâs like âmy fianceeâs sonâ and eventually they figure out his fiancĂŠe is Tony Stark and are like O.o
The only person who knows who Peter is is Christine, she is in the ER and when Stephen explains to her that Peter has a healing factor she brings him into some more private box where Stephen can tell her everything that happened.Â
Then, of course, she has to maintain the usual doctor/patient relationship so she canât let Stephen stay and this is how other people notice him. At first, is one of the nurses (I like to think that is Claire Temple because of my personal headcanon of she and Christine being close friends), but then also some other ER doctors see him and the news spreads fast.Â
Stephen didnât plan to reveal their engagement to the world like this, but apparently, Fate and Peter decided otherwise. The angrier one is Christine because he didnât tell her immediately after he proposed to Tony, but Stephen knows sheâs happy for him.Â

Prompt #574
Tony stealing Stephenâs shirts. Except Stephen only owns the one and Tony has actually been taking Wongâs shirts. Which of course results in Tony stopping by to find Stephen pleading with the washer and dryer to give up Wongâs clothes because Stephen doesnât have any other idea of where they could have gone.

unsure if the PV!stephen stuff is still a thing, but here's an idea: he was brainwashed into being a villain, and when freed and taken into custody by the avengers, he has no clue what happened.
PV!Stephen will always be a thing because I love this disaster of a sorcerer with all my heart. Thank you so much! â¤ď¸
Oh, thatâs such a great idea! *jumps up and down in excitement* I mean you just put one of my favorite tropes into my inbox, after all.
The big bad wizard gets taken into custody and tossed into a cell. The next day, when the Avengers are rested and can actually think again (because the battle was exhausting as hell) the expect some grand posturing, speeches, maybe an escape attempt or ten.
Instead they find a miserable, confused man whoâs somehow seems so much smaller than yesterday. Heâs shaking all over, but his hands are the worst. (They were stabilized by magic before but when the spell keeping Stephen under control went away in the magic-proof cell that went away too.) Nobody knew that their captive is disabled but when he flinches and instinctively raises them to hide his face the trembling and the scars are clear to see.
Heâs afraid, he knows deep down that he has done bad things but he canât remember. And not remembering is the purest form of hell for Doctor Stephen Strange with the perfect memory. There are scars he doesnât remember getting, the magic heâs just recently discovered is out of reach, and everything hurts so fucking much. Especially his head.
He flinches at sound, at light, at everything.
The Avengers look at each other and all but Tony and Bruce leave to watch the whole thing play out via video stream. Itâs clear their captive is no danger anymore and scared to death. Tony is very quiet, deep in thought and desperately trying to remember while Bruce tries to establish some form of communication.
âStephen!â Tony finally blurts out. âYouâre Stephen Strange, I knew Iâd seen your face before.
âDoctor,â their prisoner mumbles. âDoctor Strange.â
âStephen,â Tony repeats. âWe were on a first name basis a couple of years ago, remember? Some stupid charity thing? You drinking, me drinking, us both bemoaning the stupidity of the people around us?â The wizard - Stephen - looks up at that. âWhat happened, Stephen? This is so not you.â
âWhat is not me?â, Stephen asks and his confusion is clear to see and thereâs no way that itâs faked. âWhere am I and what happened?â Heâs staring at Tony and Bruce as if they can give him the answers to the universe.
Tony, to his horror, realizes that they had the whole thing backwards and that the real bad guys are still out there. So now he has to get Stephen to talk and find the ones who hurt his old one-night acquaintance from years ago. He settles down in front of the cell while Bruce fades to the background to be as unobtrusive as possible.
âWhatâs the last thing you remember?â Tony asks as gently as possible.
Stephen looks at him for a long time, trying to fit the few pieces of the puzzle he as together into something that might make sense. âWhat did I do?â he asks, still staring at his hands which look so much worse than he remembers them being. âPlease, tell me. I need to know.â
Tonyâs heart breaks at the despair in his voice and he has no clue on how to go on. They just stare at each other, neither saying a word, but both picking up so much from the silence anyway.

Spooning
Peter, holding up a spoon: "You ever wonder why it's called spooning? Like, did someone look at two spoons lying together and say: Yep, that's what two lovers hugging look like."
Stephen, not taking his eyes off the magical book he is reading: "The term is derived from an old welsh tradition. The welsh have been famous for their wood carvings since medieval times. They also held a particular favor for wooden spoons. They were hand carved pieces of art. Young men would spend months carving them, the more intricate, the better. Tradition tells that if the woman of their desires accepted the spoon, the two were then acknowledged as a couple by society. Hence spooning originally meant the giving of an intricately carved spoon to the woman you loved and wanted to marry. Over time, spooning came to mean a type of hug where you lay facing the same way. Likely born out of the public affection the new couples displayed by standing close together and sharing an embrace."
Tony, who had been banished to the couch for the last two days, mildly confused: "... So you telling me you want me to make you a spoon? I make you a spoon and I'm allowed back into your pants, that what you telling me? Friday, get one of the suits to fetch my welding equipment, fuck wood, I'm going to make the most badass titanium gold alloy spoon and then we can pick back up where we left off on page 32 in the Kama Sutra!"
Peter, watching Tony leave with a completely red face: "No offense, but I'm gonna be at Ned's for the rest of the week."
Stephen, head in his hand, sighing deeply: "I get that."
