The Marvels star Iman Vellani is writing a new Ms. Marvel comic
Tumblr media
"This was way scarier than joining the MCU for me," the actor tells EW about her new project.
Iman Vellani, the actor who plays Kamala in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (starting with last year's Ms. Marvel series on Disney+, and continuing on the big screen with The Marvels later this year) will co-write the new comic alongside Ms. Marvel  TV writer Sabir Pirzada.
Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham will handle the art, and Sara Pichelli will provide the main covers.

When I was a kid I used to insert myself in literally every media I watch read consume. Like I created an oc in my mind and make them fit somewhere in there without breaking original story. Or myself like wish I was a superhero type. Normal things we all did I think.
But also as a kid I was extremely religious. Like the moment I knew myself I was religious and I was so sincere about it.
I believed in Allah and loved Allah with my whole heart and memorise every prophets story in Qur'an, and also memorize Suras as summertime hobbies and God I loved fasting and Being hijabi when I was a little more older was my own voluntary choice and I loved it so much too. It was never hard for me or it was never for my parents or society I genuinely believed voluntarily and I loved it.
And now when I was inserting myself to this stories there was like one rare thing that make me sad about me being religious. And it was that I don't fit in. I want to so much think myself as a mutant for example but cmon how I could fit in there. Like I need to pray but superheroing have no time praying or tight clothes are haram or how the other characters see me weird and hate me probably etc.
Theennnn I am seeing Faiza Hussain I think. She was the first Muslim character I saw I'm comics and I was like so so happy obsessed. I read her but I don't remember them now but I loved her. Like she was kinda modern type of Muslim but I thought she was still yeah good.
Theeeeen I saw Dust a niqabi girl (I was not niqabi but so many people in my family were so it's something familiar and close to me). And she was praying. And she was readin Qur'an. And she was giving attention to Islamic rules. And she was doing fine mostly. Surge was yeah bad at first but I also loved it too because it was realistic. Or Rockslide helping her to hide herself when she have her hair open etc. Like it was good things it was bad thing but close to real.
And I loved it I literally protected myself into her. If she can then I can too without giving what I believe can still live the life I want be part of things I want.
Anyways I don't know why I did write this actually I think it was about Muslim characters and me and also me wanting characters that written realistically instead of idilistic wonderful lives with full of acceptance. Like yeah write a trans hijabi girl I was one for a while but it's more complex you can't just make them like your average character but just wear hijab it's more more complex then that. It doesn't feel like something to care about as representation. But you know this is probably extremely personal preference.
And last thing I am not Muslim anymore like for years ago I left it. I don't believe even supernatural now. But still I am very culturally Muslim even when I am not realising it. And people I love is Muslim. I have trauma but I don't have problems with positive sides of religion or people finding happiness on it.
So yeah it makes me happy good Muslim representation and also because of this I want ex-muslim religious trauma suffering characters without being Islamaphobic. But also without being extremely woobified. Like not a perfect wonderful minority. Because Muslims not even minority in most of places and so so so flawed people but also not Devils with objectively bad religion. Your average Muslim is literally same as your average Christian. In fact same as your average Buddhist or Jewish too. I knew it because I met this people and we are literally same when it's not about our religions. Yeah flawed human characters.
I usually have no problems here oversharing and putting cringe nonsense etc. but this feels embarrassing I think because it is too personal?? I just wanted to write something about Muslim characters in comics. Anyways I want diverse and realistic many dimensional religious people not only Muslims but other religions too.

Antagonists
Black Hole - Main Antagonist of Book 1. Alien from Pluto, trying to take over earth as a last ditch extra credit project for his AP Government class. Can absorb any attack and reflect it back
Miss Recluse - Recruited by Black Hole. Has the human sized body of a Brown Recluse spider and the head of a human and poisonous fangs. Can do everything a spider does, and is a bit of a drama queen. Besties with The Magician
The Magician - A sorcerer from the dark ages who accidentally transported himself to the future with no way back. Uses a lot of dark magic that includes illusions- favorite spell to use is blue fire that is immune to water and can burn through metal and stone. Dr. Strange meets Dr. Faciler.
Mr. Cyanide - Recruited by Black Hole, eventually becomes a solo high level threat villain, main antagonist of book 2. Mad scientist with a deadly knack for chemistry. Only cares whether his experiments work, couldn't care less if they hurt or kill people.
Boss Lady - a Mafia boss who is colossally tall and wide, and incredibly strong. Big stronk woman who is working with/for the Snow Queen (her loyalties or questionable). Does have standards but also tortures people for the fun of it so....?
Blood Debt - Loner (mainly) vigilante who rides around on a motorcycle and kills anyone who he sees fit is deserving of dying, or whoever he gets paid to kill. Does jobs for the Snow Queen, and under the mask he is someone one of the heroes is very close with...
Nightmare - a small time, low threat villain that doesn't actually hurt anyone. Her powers put people to sleep and she takes their energy from them. A freshman/sophomore college student with an engineering major. More of an anti-hero vigilante if you squint.
The Snow Queen - The big bad for the last three books. Only an urban legend/rumor until the last two books. Has ice powers that can control tech and people. No one knows her identity and she is holed up in her lair most of the time, sending minions/Boss Lady or Blood Debt to do anything outside the lair. She is someone all of the heroes know very well :)
Plot
A bunch of rookie teenage superheroes and their journey to becoming the heroes and protectors of their city, and eventually the world, and most importantly- a family. With all of the chore rotations, late night grocery runs, fights for the shower, and everything else that happens along with the action. Full of full scale super powered fights, betrayals and confrontations, cool tech and superpowers, and everything we love about the superhero genre.
Book 1 - The Initiation
Book 2 - The Hunter or Hunted
Book 3 - The Shadows
Book 4 - The Snow Queen
Book 5 - The Forsaken
(all the titles are placeholder titles for now)
Extra Stuff
Chase is a caffeine addict and not only can, but has on multiple occasions mixed coffee and energy drinks
Kylee uses sign language or a text to speech app to communicate, or if she has neither goes old school and writes things down
the city is based on a combination of Chicago and Gotham City
Nickelle has two younger siblings, a brother and a sister who are inseparable, 8 and 5 years old
Nickelle also has a huge extended family that's more traditional and she has to tone down her punk look for family gatherings
Asher's boyfriend is Damian. Damian finds out about his partner's double superhero life when Asher saves him in the mask, and like a dumbass, Asher forgets to turn on his voice modifier and Damian recognizes his voice immediately
Damian is also a Chekhov's Civilian and becomes a vital part of the plot
Nightmare and V have a little enemies to lovers romance that's mostly in the background is is really just there for comedy
The Magician gets a redemption arc and becomes the Hero Team's weird morally gray uncle
Kylee has a brother who is in the US Navy. He is one of the few people that she is comfortable being fully unmaksed around at the beginning of the books, and he is deployed during the events of the books.
Bryson has a weird relationship with his dad, who raised him all by himself and is a full time EMT. Bryson really wants to tell his dad about his double superhero life because it's driving a wedge between him and his dad, but it's not safe and Bryson's not sure how his dad will react
And finally, some memes for your viewing pleasure:

Generation Why Not? The Kids Are Alright in "Ms. Marvel"
We're kicking off our Christmas Double Feature with Ms. Marvel!
Content Warning: Ms. Marvel contains references to Islamophobia and some violence. I won’t say viewer discretion is advised on this one because it’s pretty tame, so use your judgment. Spoilers for Ms. Marvel ahead! As the world is currently going through superhero fatigue, there is something to be said about the type of impact a local hero could have. In many ways similar to a “Neighborhood…

Cosmic!
Summary:  While getting ready for her first year at Hogwarts, Kamala Khan discovers her grandma's old wand in the attic, and unlocks her own Jinn heritage.
House: Gryffindor
Blood Status: Halfblood and “half-breed”
Species: Human/Jinn hybrid
Wand: Deodar Cedar, 6 inches, Djinn hair from her great-grandmother
Broom: Cleansweep; has since upgraded to crystal air-steps
Patronus: Marbled Cat
Specialties: Conjuring, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination
Sorting:
It was a tossup between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, due to her craftiness and imagination. But Kamala's true power is daring, and her true desire is to join the heroes she idolizes.
Jinn:
The Khans are an average half-blood wizarding family—muggle father, magical mother. While getting her trunk together for her first year at Hogwarts, Kamala finds an old chest in the attic that belonged to her estranged grandmother, containing some interesting items: a Gryffindor scarf, a bangle, and an elegant wand. Her controlling mother demands she forget all of this "junk" and use the boring wand they bought from Ollivander. But Kamala sneaks the effects onto the Hogwarts Express with her. She rides the train with her muggleborn friend Bruno, and her half-blood friend Nakia, a third year Gryffindor Prefect. At the Sorting Ceremony, Kamala and Bruno go into Gryffindor and Ravenclaw  respectively.
During her first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, Kamala discovers that her grandmother's wand can do things no other wand can. And her bangle is a Portkey. Bruno analyses the wand and discovers that its core is a Jinn's hair, from someone sharing DNA with Kamala. With Bruno's help, Kamala begins uncovering her buried family history. Kamala practices her new magic on the roofs of Hogwarts. At one Care of Magical Creatures class, she saves Fleur Delacour's irritating nice Zoe from a rabid niffler, and gains an ally. During a fight in Hogsmeade with some evil Jinn, Kamala discovers that the Portkey bangle is also functionally a time-turner, and completes a Stable Time Loop to save her half-Jinn grandmother as a child.  Also on Kamala's tail is a zealous Ministry of Magic agent named Dolly Stoher-Umbridge, Dolores's less interesting niece. The most incompetent agent in Ministry history, Umbridge 2.0 spends the entire school year failing to capture Kamala, then loses her job after nearly blowing up Hogwarts.
Mom finally comes around and supports Kamala joining the Order of the Avengers, even making her new robes. Kamala then does some missions for Mad-Eye Fury, with Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau.
Patronus:
Kamala leaps and bounds through the air in the constraining urban landscape very much like a small cat hunting in the rainforest, trailing her long scarf like the marbled cat’s exceptionally long tail. She has a cat's disdain for doing as she's told, but also a feline's stealth to break the rules under her opponent's nose. She is overall harmless, yet hunted simply for standing out.
AN: I've yet to see "the Marvels," but I'm looking forward to when I do. I enjoyed "Ms. Marvel," and meant to do this entry a while ago.

Thank you @repbeyondthedefaults for your Ask!
Yes absolutely agree the Tarazi siblings are really great characters on DC's Legends of Tomorrow. I wrote a post about them here:
Sad to hear about Legends being cancelled.
I hope with more shows like Ms Marvel on Disney Plus that we can now start to see more Muslim character rep for the good guys, and do away with bad tropes/stereotypes in the media.
So far, the Muslim good guys with beards rep has been great in Ms Marvel too. Love to see it!

Ms. Marvel Episode 4: Seeing Red
Laal Khanjeer! an exploration of cultural disconnection and insecurity and complex grandmother mother daughter relationships!! a SWANA country depicted WITHOUT THE GAUDY YELLOW FILTER??!!
this show…this brilliant show always knows the way to my heart.
and they DID end up heavily softening that Djinn thing I was worried about before by explaining that yes it’s just a lack of a better word term used to describe these inter-dimensional beings who are similar to Djinn of Islamic belief but aren’t actually those very things. another win!
