(inspired by that one background moment of the 03 series! 🐢🐀🐀🐀🐀)

there will be lots of similar plot points as the 03 series (like 'tales of leo' and 'good genes' etc etc) but there are also a lot of fundamental changes in the foundation of things too — like the guardians and ninja tribunal and the hamato family line etc etc. content wise tbh its probably mostly just gonna be snapshots of random moments throughout the boys lives, but i do kinda have some plot concepts? so we'll see 👀

Years ago, Oroku Saki defeated Hamato Tang Shen in battle, and finally brought an end to the family that would deny him his power. He ordered her homestead be razed to the ground, and all mystic artifacts to be delivered to him. Particularly, the Hamato’s prized pet tortoise, which was rumored to be itself a conduit for the family’s legendary mystic abilities. With the creature in his possession, along with the new rapid-enhancement chemical he commissioned from laboratory familiar with mystic properties in New York — at last, he would be granted his godhood, and guarantee the legacy of his fathers clan. The Hamatos could deny him no longer. He had won.

Or he would have, had the fools at the lab not ruined everything, the precious mutagen spilling all over the tortoises crate and the fool handlers who carried it. The contaminated men morphed into horrific, animalistic monsters, attacking the scientists and wrecking the laboratory itself. And, most crucially, in the ensuing madness, the crate which contained the tortoise, his last possible connection to the Hamato’s power, lay shattered, and empty…

Meanwhile, Hamato “Splinter” Yoshi, who until this point had quite enjoyed his extended existence as a simple tortoise and family pet, found himself fleeing the eyes and hands of the man who killed his human family, and the lab that granted him this new shift in consciousness, to instead face the terrifying chaos of the streets and alleys of NYC. His transformation into something more bipedal had hurt considerably and left him aching and disoriented, but still he could not pause. He could not falter. Not until he found somewhere safe to hide himself and the four squirming, impossibly small rat-pups in his arms. He hoped the chemical that washed over them had not warped and hurt their young bones as it had his own. He hoped he could find somewhere safe to care for them. He hoped they could survive the night without their mother. He hoped, he prayed he could protect these precious, squeaking, peach-fuzzed ruminants of his family. He did not think he could survive any more loss.

For now, he would do what he could, and slip into the shadows of this city. Having lived so long among ninjas had its benefits there, at least.

Meiolaniidae

So honestly I'm relatively new to digital painting. I sketched a little here and there, made skeletals, but actual painting I've done very little. But I ended up putting this together for my work on the Wikipedia page for meiolaniid turtles. (Yes the Ninjemys colours are a reference to it being named after the TMNT)

I've rambled a bit about them before, but basically, meiolaniids are weird stem-turtles thought to be outside the two main modern groups we have. They were decently large animals, their shells alone range from 1 meter to 2 meters in length (3 to 6ft I believe?), they were land animals, had some crazy horns and tails that were encased in spiky armored rings and tipped with a tail club. Here some photos with paleontologist Victoria Arbour, a Ninjemys tail club photographed by Serjoscha Evers and a Meiolania tail club illustrated by W.H. Wesley.

They were found throughout almost the whole Cenozoic, with the oldest form dating to the Eocene of South America and the most recent ones living from the Pleistocene to Holocene in Australia and on various South Pacific Islands. They are honestly pretty cool animals and super underrated, which is why I decided to give their wikipedia pages upgrades in the first place. Which also meant doing a bunch of other illustrations (that I was more in tune with) and pulling a bunch of public domain photos and putting them on wikimedia. Here some skeletals and charts I made, open the last pic, it shows multiple different Meiolania species atop each other.

The results were pretty mixed tbh. Some of the most recent forms, Gaffneylania, Warkalania and even Ninjemys had relatively little to write about. But things were more exciting with Niolamia (if you remember my rant about its messed up history). Meiolaniidae itself was just a big summary of all the other stuff, but easily the most extensive was Meiolania itself, which took AGES to research and put togehter. Tho I'm pretty happy with the result. Here's a little side by side, old and new.

Peter nods and explores the rest of the tank.  “I get that.  I made my first web fluid in chemistry class.”

“You made it?” Donnie asks.  “That’s interesting.  What compound do you use?  I scanned it after you left and it’s incredibly durable-.”

A hand swings through the air and lands hard against the soft shells face.  Donnie yelps, but Leo sinks into a chair before the turtle can retaliate.  “Are you guys done nerding out?  I thought you needed our help so Stark doesn’t kick you off the team?”

“He’s not going to kick me off the team,” Peter frowns.  “Wait, do you think he will?”  Peter was thinking probation at most.  Is this kickout worthy?  He just became an honorary member!

“No,” Leo waves.  “I mean, maybe.  Probably.  Yes.”

“Well, which is it?!”

“Guys!” Raph shouts, “lets focus on the box please?  Is that them, Donnie?”

“Yep,” the turtle answers.  He zooms in on the blinking dot and an address pops up.  “They’re at the docks.  Typical.”

“Buckle up fellas,” Raph says.  The snapper falls into the massive chair in the center and the rest follow suit.  “Let’s save Spidey’s job.”

Peter locks into a stable position just as the tank lets out a thunderous roar and peals out of the alleyway.  Muffled shouts and agitated honks fill the ring around them and Peter adjusts his grip against the floor.  “You’re uh, really flooring it,” he says, “how long have you guys been driving?”

They take a hard right without slowing, the opposite wheels lifting so much that Peter prepares for the thing to tip, but the tank crashes back against the asphalt.  “A few years now,” Mikey answers, “but don’t worry, we’re unlicensed.”

Issue 2 for the fake miniseries “The Tortoise and the Hare!!” This time around the boys get involved in more shenanigans, and they have to make their quick escape. I feel like this one already looks so different from my first cover, and it makes me feel so happy. Literally so excited to keep creating this year aaaa!!!

The Tortoise and the Arachnid thought and final sneek

I’m literally so close to finishing this!  At this point I’m like “take it away from me!” 😭😭😂. 

SNEAK PEAK

There are about a dozen people moving below, each covered in neon colors and different shades of purple.  “They really take this purple thing seriously, huh?”

Donnie raises an eyebrow, “What’s wrong with purple?”

“Nothing’s wrong with it,” Peter says.  “It’s just….a lot of one color.”

“Says the guy in bright reds and blues,” Donnie snorts.  “It’s a played out color combination, Spidey.  Fashion is a playground, especially for super hero suits.”

Peter furrows his brow.   “You’re wearing purple and black.  How creative is that?”

Mikey hides a laugh behind glowing hands and Leo cracks a grin.  Peter feels his own mouth quirk under the mask when a hand squeezes his shoulder.  Raph gives him a small shake, “you ready?”  Peter sets his shoulders and nods.  He’s ready.  He can do this.  The turtle moves then and, despite his bulk, disappears into the darkness of the roof.  Leo fades behind the larger turtle with a wave, and Mikey mouths a ‘good luck’ before melting into the shadows after them.

Donnie taps a finger against his wrist and a small screen comes to life.  “We’re about two stores above it,” He says.  Donnie looks around the roof before pointing, “there.”  Peter zeros in on the cracked skylight and rolls his eyes.  Why do villains pick places with these things?  They’re really easy to break into.  The softshell cross the roof on silent feet.  Peter sticks close to his heels and drops to a crawl the closer they get to the glass paneling.  Peter peers through the window, lets the suit scan the small room below and lets out a breath when it’s empty.  “It’s clear,” he whispers.  Donnie slips the lock with a quick twist of his fingers and pulls it open without a sound.  “Lower us down spider boy, and by the way, I’ve been lobbying for a new look for years.”

Peter snorts and shoots a quick series of webs on the concrete.  He shifts, swinging to lean in the open mouth of the window and waits for Donnie.  The turtle moves around him until Peter feels strong arms wrap around his neck and a heavy weight against his back.  “You’re heavier than you look.”

“Well,” Donnie says and Peter starts lowering them into the room below.  “Military grade titanium isn’t exactly light.”

“What grade?”

“Five.”

Peter lets out a low whistle as his feet hit the floor.  “Where’d you get that?”
