No, you don't. We really don't. If we truly wrote for ourselves, we have a thing here on Tumblr called "Post Privately". AO3 writers shouldn't even dare to say that shit. Y'all kids desperately need the social media validation (or ANY validation), otherwise you'd write in a private blog, for yourself.

What you're really doing (here in fandom, at least) is writing what you like/what you need to* for like minds and those who can appreciate the stories that you write. Writers write to share their stories. If it wasn't meant to be talked about both positively and/or negatively and you really cannot handle any criticism whatsoever, you would keep it to your private diary.

It's fandom for a reason. Things are meant to be shared in fandoms. Don't latch on to the excuse that you're "writing for yourself". We all fucking write for ourselves, whether it's the shittiest fan fiction writer or J.K. Rowling (🤢).

To all my writers who have a tough time with smut terms and not knowing which ones to use, I have found the holy grail for us.

This reddit user, who I've recently found out is @kjscottwrites here on tumblr, took a poll of 3,500 people and went really in depth with asking their favorite terminology, along with actual pie charts on what the readers preferred to see in their smut.

Dialogue tips that actually work:

You are not writing a movie (ignore this if you are). The reader doesn't need to know every word the characters say for the duration of the story. Less is more.

Dialogue can happen within the prose. "And they awkwardky discussed the weather for five minutes" is way better than actually writing five pages of dialogue about the weather.

Balance your dialogues. Surprise yourself with a monosyllabic answe to a dialogue that's ten sentences long. Don't be afraid of letting your character use half a page for a reply or nothing at all!

Don't write accents phonetically, use slang and colloquialisms if needed.

Comma before "said" and no caps after "!?" unless it's an action tag. Study dialogue punctuation.

Learn the difference between action tags and dialogue tags. Then, use them interchangeably (or none at all).

Don't be afraid to use said. Use said if characters are just saying things, use another word if not. Simple. There's no need to use fancy synonyms unless absolutely necessary.

Not everyone talks the same way so it makes sense for your characters to use certain words more often than others. Think of someone who says "like" to start every sentence or someone who talks really slow. Be creative.
