hello all! i have written quite a few research papers during my time in university, and these are some of the tips and tricks i’ve used while writing! (disclaimer: these are from the perspective of a history and spanish major so the process may be different for other majors and of course everyone is different! this is just what helps me)
1. spend time at the library
this is the most important tip in this post, hence its spot as number 1. not only is it great to spend time writing in the library to help you focus, but there are countless resources at your university’s library that will help you write the paper. depending on your university, you may have archives, an extensive array of books on the subject, and staff members specifically hired to help students do research. take advantage of these resources!
2. write an outline
having an outline is immensely helpful while writing a research paper. it helps you organize your thoughts and write more cohesively, especially when the paper is 8+ pages long. another important part of outlines is coming up with a clear thesis before you start writing so research is guided by a main point.
3. go to your professor’s office hours
going to office hours can be helpful in multiple ways. your prof can help you identify a topic, can read over a rough draft, and give you research tips. as professors, they have done research themselves and can help point you in the right direction. plus, professors love when students visit their office hours because a majority of their students don’t, so your professor will appreciate it!
4. give yourself time to revise a rough draft
including myself, we have all procrastinated. the last couple years of school have been really hard, so don’t blame yourself if you find yourself behind on your work. but, if you can, writing a rough draft ahead of time and working on the paper throughout the semester can make the final product so much better! try to find a friend (or your professor!^) to read the rough draft to get multiple eyes on the paper. some professors will even require that you submit a rough draft for the class.
5. do research at an archive
obviously this is not possible for every paper you’re assigned in college. but, if it’s for an important class for your major, doing research in person at an archive can make your paper unique and make you stand out. find a local institution or your university’s archives and see if they have any sources relevant to your topic. then, make an appointment or just show up (depending on their policy) and gain access to archival materials!

I'm in my first semester at grad school for a master's in history and political studies. I'm currently taking 2 courses; while one makes enough sense, the other is not. It's set on World War 2 Eastern Front and we're set to read through some books, answer the discussion post, and move on to the next week. Normally, I do fine with these, but the books are rather dense so it's hard to process through chapters that are 40 pages long without having any idea what I'm looking for. There's no instruction; there's just the open post with open parameters to post whatever we like. The first two posts I've done were okay, but since she doesn't grade them and just responds I have no idea if I'm doing okay. Do you have any tips?
hi anon! thanks so much for taking the time to send over this ask :) first of let me acknowledge your hard work here--grad school is hard and you're doing it! that's something to be proud of itself. i have a similar class to this this semester, but luckily we get some discussion questions. my advice to you would be to first do some googling of discussion questions on the book that other people have come up with, then that can help guide your reading and give you some things to look for. if there aren't any discussion questions online, i would then try maybe coming up with one question you have about each chapter based on the titles, collaborate with your classmates to see if they have any ideas about the book, or set up an office hours with your professor! i am sure they would be happy to help you out. i hope this helps and please feel free to send more asks, reply here, or send me a dm! best of luck!!

hello all! as the first day of the fall 2021 semester approaches (or it has maybe already begun for some of you!) i wanted to make a post with some back to school advice!
before the first day
1. take a good look at your schedule and make sure everything works for you! make sure you are signed up for all the classes that you need and that your classes are applying to a requirement!
2. as soon as they are available, read your syllabi! look at what the assignments and exams will be like for the semester. and try not to get too overwhelmed! (i know that's easier said than done) you can do this!
3. look at where your classes will be! if you've never been on campus before, look up a map and try to plan your route to each of your classes!
4. the night before, get a good night's sleep! there is almost nothing as important as sleep, especially before the first day of classes. pack up your backpack and make sure you have everything you need!
5. if you're a returning student, try not to be too intimidated by past semesters if you've had any bad experiences. make this semester the best one yet!
throughout the year
6. during the first week of classes, try to do your best to be present and listen to all of the introductory things about the class. these can be the best indicators on whether not this class is right for you!
7. make sure to get enough rest. returning students and new students alike will be sure to be pretty exhausted with all of the orientations and new classes and meetings. take naps! get a good night's sleep!
8. take care of yourself. while doing your best work during the first week is important, it is also important to do things for fun! watch a movie, light some candles, take a bath! do whatever makes you feel the most relaxed
9. try to stay on top of deadlines. although it is stressful, there are a lot of deadlines (such as the drop/add deadlines for classes) and you don't want to miss them! while nothing is the end of the world, try to stay on top of things so you don't get overwhelmed later
10. familiarize yourself with campus outside of class. walk around and find the library and any places to eat and hang out
11. plan plan plan! get a bujo or even a pre-filled planner. keep it simple (like mine!) or make it as detailed and extravagant as you want! make it your own :)
12. remember that you are doing your best! even if it feels like you aren't, you are a capable student and you can do anything you set your mind to
