Zuko finds out Katara was parentified from the age of eight and was a single mom friend of three until he stumbled into the position of gaang dad friend. So when she visits the Fire Nation Zuko dotes on her, making sure her every need is anticipated and catered to. He even goes as far as - to the horror of his council - kneeling to remove her shoes.
Because of this she earns the nickname Lady Katara among the palace staff which she finds amusing but a little confusing. So one day over tea she asks Iroh why they call her that and he explains:
"They're just practicing."
"Why would you need to practice a nickname?"
"Well my dear, they expect that within a few years Fire will preceed it."
And that's about when Katara chokes on her tea.

Hei Bei University | 01 - Geography
Series: ATLA Modern, University, Non Bending AU
A/N: thought i should introduce the locations a little before i start posting other stuff. so i guess this is a filler episode?

— this is a non-bending au so I wanted to rename some of the element based locations and maybe even a little bit of the geography of this universe. Some of the minor characters’ (jet, haru) towns weren't named so I gave them names as well.
North & South Oceanilia
– aka the north & south pole
– except the geographical location looks a lot more like north & south america instead of being super far like the poles
– Hakoda (sokka & katara's dad) is the chief of the southern tribe
– Arnook (yue's dad) is the chief of the northern tribe
Blaze City
– fire nation capital city
– ozai is a descendant of the former royal family. the monarch system was dissolved a long time ago but the royal family remains pretty influential
– Blaze City is currently run by president roku
Republic City
– home to Hei Bei University, Jasmine Dragon Tea Shop & Gyatso's Vegan Bakery
Wind Chime Island
– this universe's version of the Northern Air Temple
– it's a secluded island instead of one that's in the air
– hometown of Teo
Kyoshi Island
– hometown of Suki
Makapu Village
– hometown of Meng (canon)
Ba Sing Se
– hometown of Jin
Mangrove Hills
– hometown of Jet
Copper Ground Village
– hometown of Haru

Series: ATLA Modern, University, Non Bending AU
A/N: hi! i thought about posting the headcanon series (that i'm still writing) and decided to post a little synopsis before I officially start posting~

Hei Bei University is a prestigious university located in the heart of Republic City. This series follows the ATLA characters on their journeys as HBU students. This story is a modern, non-bending AU of ATLA where ‘ATLA’ doesn’t happen. Some personalities of the characters may not be very accurate to their ATLA selves. This isn’t a fanfic but instead, a series of headcanons that exist in this universe.

ok so I had a few ideas for a modern au of atla and have a lot of headcanons for one of the ideas I have. the only problem is that I don't have the brain power or willpower to write a full fledged fanfic.
would anyone be interested in seeing a series of headcanons in relation to the one au idea? like things that would be canon in that universe and maybe it'll include a few blurbs too.

to add to this point, kuvira went ahead and did the very thing suyin was against. even after suyin explicitly told kuvira that she will no longer be welcomed in Zaofu if she goes ahead with the conquering. Opal leaving, however, was because she wouldn't have opportunities to hone her skills as an airbender if she stayed in Zaofu whereas Kuvira has/had plenty opportunities in Zaofu as an earth/metal bender. (also because Opal wasn't trying to replace the earth kingdom monarch)
You ever think about Opal having been the only Beifong to be able to seperate from her family on relatively peaceful terms and it required her to change the part of her identity that ties her closest to the rest of the Beifongs.
Like the Beifong family is Earth Kingdom nobility, Toph is a famed Earthbender, Lin is a metalbender cop, Suyin and the rest of the Beifongs are literally members of the metal clan. And the only way someone wasn't branded some manner of traitor was by losing that part of herself and swapping this legacy for another.
This new "path" in life she's taken, probably the only alternative to being confined in Zaofu forever she saw, requires her to let go of her attachments to her family. She's pressured to be neutral and to "uphold the oath of pacifism" while those she loves are being outwardly threatened. Because technically, she's not part of the group that's being threatened. She's meant to be an Air Nomad before she is a Beifong.
All this just because fate or something else beyond human comprehension gave her airbending and because she didn't want to be stuck in her mom's weird lil culty city.
The only option of freedom for her requires cutting ties. There are always strings attached.
I can't help but think of Toph's arc as well. She didn't care that much for the fight against the Firelord. No, she just wanted freedom. And she took the chance she had.
It's honestly interesting. The price these characters had to pay for their freedom. And the relationship the Beifongs have to freedom in general.

The Beifongs and the theme of running away or being forced out of their home. Like why does this keep happening to them. Toph running away from home Lao leaving Gaoling due to the decline of his relationship with Poppy, Suyin being forced to leave Republic City, Opal leaving for the Air Temples, Kuvira and Baatar Jr being banished, the Beifong family being captured and taken away from Zaofu by force.
Like it's a very obert theme but it's so fun because of the Beifongs association with Earth, which is meant to be 'stable'. And their association with metal which is often excavated from where it belongs and melted down/molded.
I keep thinking about these lyrics from Runs in the Family by Amanda Palmer:
But don't blame me because I can't help where I come from
And running is something that we've always done well
And mostly I can't even tell what I'm running from
Run from their pity, from responsibility

i loved the part where Su acknowledged that she has to let opal make the choice because she understood that both too much freedom & no freedom at all shaped Toph, Lin & Su in not so great ways. I think that alone helped opal be the one to separate on peaceful terms.

iroh a 100% would've known who the blue spirit was since day 1. he just chose to ignore it until he found a missing poster of appa and knew zuko would've gone searching.
1) the mask belonged to ursa. (she was an actress before getting forced into marrying ozai. see: The Search ATLA comic)
2) zuko was a theater kid growing up. (see: him being dramatic while playing with the knife iroh got & the fact that he went to watch plays every year with his mum)
he must've known zuko kept the mask & wore it out to be himself without being prince zuko.
