until a certain point in highschool, I literally just thought kids my age (mainly guys) who cared about that stuff were a bunch of horny little fuckers and I was completely normal

i didn't have "i'm broken" teenage asexual angst i had "i'm literally being the only reasonable one about this concept and the rest of you are behaving like fucking freaks" perception issues

parts of live action ATLA that I can think of right now and thought were particularly well done include:

- opening scene with the earthbender (he fought hard and died brutally, it sets the tone well for this world at war)

- the air nomad genocide (it feels so different when we have to see it for ourselves, jeez louise)

- Kyoshi fighting through Aang (metal as hell)

- the cave of two lovers (gay Oma and Shu!! red and blue Oma and Shu!! hell yeah!! I also just like how they had Sokka and Katara in there instead, and their familial love got them out)

- that earth kingdom soldier talking to Iroh (more nuanced than just "corrupt soldier punch old man", also "he was only 19" got to me, great acting bro)

- Zuko talking to Iroh at Lu Ten's funeral (Zuko saying what he's supposed to but then instead of leaving he shares a memory of his cousin and just sits with his devastated, unresponsive uncle so he isn't alone, oh my god I cried)

- Seeing Zuko's father tell him he's banished (he looks so young and scared and he echos what his mother must've taught him about the weak being capable of growing stronger)

- Zuko's crew being the 41st division (I love that it ties the crew directly to the action that upset Ozai and led to Zuko's banishment, plus it gives the crew a pretty damn good reason to respect him despite him being a bratty asshole sometimes)

#this crew doesn't look as old as they do in the animated series too #so it makes sense honestly #if the whole live action show was like these scenes I would've been so happy #these moments are mainly why I can't write off the series in it's entirety #natla #netflix atla #netflix avatar #atla #avatar the last airbender #zuko #iroh #lu ten #live action atla #atla live action #aang #ozai #katara #sokka

I DO NOT think Netflix's live action ATLA was created or changed with any distaste for the source material or INTENTIONAL sexism

YES there were a fair few poor decisions made and YES some female characters were diluted while some male characters were sanitized (to all the detriment of all of them)

I honestly think that the people who made this show, particularly the actors, love the original series but didn't just want to make an exact replica (which I can appreciate)

unfortunately, it appears that well meaning changes were not fully thought through, or if they were, clearly certain parts of the source material were underestimated in their significance or misunderstood in their meaning

Katara's character was mild and very disappointing, but Kiawentiio Tarbell is a good actress! don't let poor directing choices fool you

if any of the actors (especially the younger or newer actors) disagreed with any character changes, they couldn't do much or anything about it (and obviously they couldn't bad-mouth the show in interviews)

also, I can sympathize with wanting to make characters more likeable, especially when people have had 20 years to complain about stuff like Katara being self-righteous, Aang being flighty, S1 Zuko being bratty, and Sokka being less complex/interesting

but by not understanding that the inclusion of unattractive character flaws is thought out, intentional, and crucial to bringing these characters to life...

you fundamentally misunderstand the characters, and subsequently (in such a character-driven story) the whole gosh darn point of the show

#I also don't blame them for taking out some of the more silly and whimsical things like riding elephant koy #due to pacing and tone and that being really hard to adapt #not everything was going to translate well from animation #but they gotta find ways to make up for that #atla #netflix avatar #natla #avatar the last airbender #live action atla #atla live action #katara #aang #sokka #zuko #kiawentiio tarbell

the ATLA movie was abysmal, so the bar was buried under the floorboards when it came to the live action show

(I haven't finished ep8, it's hard to find the motivation to do so rn)

I will say, I have mostly enjoyed watching this show overall

I went into this show as open-minded as I could, trying to view it as something different, with low expectations

I started off cautiously but pleasantly surprised

I could initially overlook some pacing/plot/character changes, because I was willing and curious to see where they would take them

not every change made me actively upset, most just made me a little sad or varying levels of confused

and then there were a few scenes/additions that genuinely impressed me and made me feel things

unfortunately though, those moments with actual emotional weight, made every lackluster emotional moment stand out much more significantly

its like it raised the bar for itself midway through, then tripped over it :(

again though, I can't say I hate it even if I dont love it, and I find any intense hatred or blind praise for this show as a whole, silly/annoying (let's remember nuance guys)

I saw a post that pointed out something important so I feel the need to clarify

I think I would still like Netflix ATLA to somehow make Zutara canon

HOWEVER

I know it wouldn't actually be making "Zutara" canon

"Zutara" requires both Zuko and Katara

right now, my boy is hard to see and my girl is absent, nowhere to be seen

BUT

considering the fandom ignited once more over a short (but kinda fascinating) scarf scene, I would love to see what crumbs or moments they would give us (the fans) to work with

as a Zutara enjoyer who's only 2 episodes in, I completely agree

I'm not getting my hopes up at all, but I can't help but think they gotta commit to something crazy to really set it apart (and I'd honestly forgive SO MUCH about this show if they made them canon)

Listen I’m not a Zutara enjoyer, but I’m the biggest advocate for it becoming canon in the live action show. Like people are going to hate on the show no matter what they do so they might as well do something crazy and cause a little chaos before they crash and burn.

someone coloured one of my pages from the Contrast ZK colouring book!

dang, I've been neglecting tumblr and missing out on stuff like this

It’s only taken me literal months to finish (mostly cause I keep forgetting I have it in my notes app) but hey! I colored one of @dapperapple ‘s art from the @zutaracoloringbook !

As I was finishing I was thinking about when this could have happened (and daydreaming about a background I’ll never have the skills for) and I’m really in love with it being the new year and the gaang is all together visiting Zuko in the FN and Katara and Zuko end up sneaking off to dance, and somehow she ends up dipping him then, just to prove she can, picks him up.

Anyways this was fun to do! Stay tuned to see if I manage to do any more in 2024 (but you know I’ll still have the Zutara brainrot 💜)
