A short video documenting a part of the organisational, and improvised elements of my creative process. From this video it is evident that, as kelly’s description of the word glitch would suggest, “the digital tick”. It perfectly describes my relationship with the abstract concepts theme, I embody the human tick. I am literally exploring the use of malfunction and creating fragmentation as a way to explore my own experiences within an abstract setting. Through performing and improvising with my sampler I allowed myself to freely interject and disrupt the flow of my own composition whilst exploring a sense of control within the overall setting recreated in a safe space.

Sketches for my Abstract Concepts can be heard on the above link.
The track first is called ‘Time’. This track explores playing with literal timing and the DAW system parameters. I used this as part of my compositional process, with the aim to reflect how it can often be tricky to process time, as it is a non-tangable concept (abstract).
The second track is called ‘Social interactions’ which explores this very idea. This track documents the journey of an uncomfortable experience. I collected ‘in the moment’, found sounds, which I edited and improvised with. In order to do so I used my sampler as a way of re-organising, what felt like, an extremely disorganised and confusing situation.

The track explores the notion of how dealing with something so abstract can cause a great deal of problems to the concrete thinker. Time, relationships and social interaction can become intense to handle when experiencing a change of events. It would seem that most humans engage with these concepts as a way of just being, yet as soon as there is a change or ‘glitch’ to the system it begins to fragment the perspective, timing becomes meaningless and social interactions can become confusing and almost impossible to make and execute decisions as there is no concrete reason why one decision is right and the other is not? The inspiration for this track came about today from a personal experience. I wanted to reflect and respond to this situation in a quiet space in order to compose this track as a sonic representation from some ‘in the moment’ sounds mixed with some thoughtful reflections and manipulation in a DAW system. This track is intended for those who are abstract thinkers (Neurotypicals) and would like to understand how an everyday situation like this can feel so confusing and in fact and abstract to us concrete thinkers, people with aspergers or visual thinkers.

Time is an abstract concept and therefore lacks a sense of concrete sense, for example, we cannot see or feel it vicariously and therefore doesn't register as it may for a person who does think in a more abstract way. For people like myself (more concrete thinkers) I wanted to create my experience of Time as an abstract concept may feel through sonic expression. I intended for the Abstract thinker to turn around and say that my piece is abstract due to a huge processing difference.
My own reflection on the creative process and personal methodology:
While improvising with my found sounds, I wanted to explore, timing in various senses. As you can hear at various points the music slips in and out of time, contrasting with the timing of the pre-programmed and tempo fixed drum machine. I used myself and the drum machine as a way of portraying through music my connection from a literal perspective to show how alien time with conversation can feel as an abstract concept.
From the initial found sound to the final improvised demo this piece explores sonically; rhythm, repetition, development of sound over duration of time, cutting up over lapping audio snippets after recording the improvised /interactive stage. In other words playing with time and the occurence of events in an re-organised way, which are all analogies enemy mind for how jarring conversation and judging when to speak and when not to.
I would say that many of the sonic traits are very personal to me, vicariously. I have utilised a trigger of a short sample of my voice, which is a main ‘glitchy’ feature within the sound of the track. The intention or message behind the composition is the struggle know when to start saying what you want to say. This elements explore the abstract feeling which I encounter when trying to figure out (malfunction) when to begin my sentence, therefore resulting in an abstract sound to a non-concrete thinker. You can hear the heavy use of jittering, twitchy, glitching use of this very short vocal sample within the track. I am exploring natural rhythms of speech and conversation which most people would never have to think about or consider. In agreement to Grandin’s statement this is also an aspect of my communication which I have always found very confusing and so has lead me to apply glitch as a sonic style to this feeling.
People still accuse me of interrupting. Due to a faulty rhythm sense, it is difficult to determine when I should break into a conversation. Following the rhythmic ebb and rise of a conversation is difficult.
The Abstract thinker response to my track:
When I asked Phoebe Robinson, a Popular Music student currently studying at Goldsmiths University of London if she would say she was an abstract thinker or a concrete thinker, she said would describe herself as an abstract thinker.
I proceeded and asked another question this was; if I said books to you, in your mind do you have a specific book which comes to mind every time, or do you think about books in the broader sense first? The response was “Definitely books in the broader sense.” When Phoebe had listened to my composition she said “The guitar loop becomes so hypnotic towards the end, it’s like it doesn’t even sound like a guitar, it just becomes this abstract noise whirring around.”
This would prove that to the world of abstract thinkers time may seem mundane and something which makes total sense as a broader category. However, when an abstract thinker experiences from a non-abstract perspective time as a concept, in summary it would seem as though time maybe less mundane and easy too understand from a literal perspective and would seem more abstract and ‘noisy’ when through sonic expression.
Using music for research allowed me to communicate my experiences of the concept of time with that of an abstract thinkers experiences of time.

A literal ‘elevator pitch’ representing a few visual analogies for my themes and aesthetic choices.
It is common for people who are very visual thinkers or people who have autism or aspergers to think in extremely detailed pictures and images when in conversation, which is why they may seem as though they are ‘concrete thinker’ or unable to put themselves in someone else shoes. When I was asked to create a 60 second elevator pitch explaining my project I took this as an opportunity to undertake some primary research and the sketch above is what came to mind immediately.
As Temple Grandin says; "When I was a child and a teenager, I thought everybody thought in pictures. I had no idea that my thought processes were different. In fact, I did not realize the full extent of the differences until very recently." (Grandin, no date)
As the saying goes a picture tells a thousand words which is very true. When I began to analyse my research (the above sketch) it seemed rather apparent that I had subconsciously linked all of my aims and methodology together within one visual image. This includes: my personal feeling towards the task (myself as the elevator steeping onto a pitch uneasily , the tape reel as a thought for importance of processing my audio (as my mouth), the transparent perspective of the lift (using myself as research as primary research and being honest and open about allowing people to see how the ‘concrete thinker’ thinks. We then have the ‘pitch’ which has this upside down but then not upside down table in the middle (showing that I had subconsciously factored in ways that I would manipulate my sound ‘objects’.
I have just realised that because a table is what I attach visually in my head to the word ‘objects’ -I don't think of objects in the general sense as in, many objects which can be various items. I have therefore used the table as a visual symbol for the fact that I intend to incorporate sound ‘objects’ into my compositions literally via phone memos and found sound recording. Though having said this I have learnt that ‘Abstract thinkers’ (Neurotypicals) do this naturally therefore my drawing of a table in my sketch could understandably be confusing or maybe seen as totally random, yet so definite in my mind when discussing objects within my DAW system and possibly considering reversed or re-appropriated sound objects!?
From this sketch you can see how I think about words in a very literal way, which can sometimes be a problem when it comes to understanding another persons idea or perspective because generally by this point, I have already built a fully detailed image with all the processes, concepts, intentions methodology and parameters of an idea or task in hand in a way which already works.
In this image you can see how abstract the world can seem from a literal thinkers perspective. However, the style of the drawing is very angular and although sketched roughly you can see that the intention is focused on various perspectives, toying with the idea of 3D drawing and a very angular grid like cut up approach, this to me reflected the idea of using many samples in a cut up and process way. The little table which one moment looks upside down and the next minute is standing on all four legs could be understood in sonic terms as manipulating or re-appropriating a sound or literally reversing a sound or flipping it upside down in a mix.
The elevator is a reflection of my feelings of uncertainty towards trying something new and not being 100% certain on where I am going with it, hence the left hand corner (which looks like  looking an animate, animated elevator somewhat humanised stepping onto the pitch with its right foot) edging into a new set of ideas. The use of leaves with veins shows a reminder that I must continue to expand and develop ideas and this should not be a daunting feeling  and that it should remain natural and normal to expand over time like that of a tree producing leaves with.
The fact that the lift is see-through or transparent would suggest that I intend or thought about be explicit about myself here and using myself as my primary source of research for this project, which would also suggest why I take notes (see the Diary section) on myself throughout my journey as a form of self analysis/critical reflection on the thought process and on my findings as I am aware that like, Grandin quoted above, process the world in a very different way.

A current playlist of some of my influences from the Glitch, Noise and Found Sound based musics. Featuring Artists such as Oval. Autechre, Hildegard Westerkamp, Matmos, Gold Panda, Ryoji Ikeda, Pansonic and many more. Throughout my research process I have collected a set of tracks which feel to me as though a sonic mood board has begun to emerge naturally, over time. These tracks really stand out to me because of the interjection of human quality within a process which, could be seen as a very loop, DAW, electronic, sample based in its methodology, However my approach is slightly different to this in that I intend to improvise and play everything in real time in order to explore the area between human feeling and machine/technology.

Video
In this video I am experimenting with glitches, and noise using my found sounds. Using DAW systems to process live I time stretched and transposed my sounds. By using the computer track pad as an interactive instrument I was able to improvise experimenting with human feel within a highly computerised environment. During this process I thought about what I believed could make such an electronic and computerised sound appear to have a sense of life and humanised feel to it.
My reflection; the ‘slides’ on the track pad where a sense of release and the sudden ‘clicks’ on the keyboard were representative of the reaction to my own quick thought process during which is reminiscent of the sound of glitches within a process. The two physical responses would seem to be a contrast and literally gesticulatory of how humans may portray these feelings.

I have been reading into the concept of glitch and the analogy for what a glitch is in terms of aesthetic. It would seem similar to that of a personal trait, which I aim to put across in my compositions as a way of incorporating a human feel, personal to me. As Kelly suggests glitch is ‘the digital tick’. Glitches can apparently be caused by ‘lost or incorrect binary code or an overload on the CPU (central processing unit) of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). Again the causes of a glitch within digital mediums would seem to work as an analogy for how a human responses to working memory overload; expressed via nervous ticks (coping mechanisms) for when the human ‘CPU’ becomes overloaded.
Can glitch, noise and found sound be used as an analogy for human expression?
