like. okay. the entire point of nico’s arc in heroes of olympus is that his trauma caused him to isolate himself from other people, which caused a self-fulfilling spiral where people meeting him for the first time were like ‘woah what the fuck is up with that guy’. he is off-putting, intense, standoffish, even creepy/unsettling. he rejects people’s attempts at kindness for reasons they don’t understand (like how they offer him percy’s room and he refuses and sleeps in the rigging fucking drama queen i love him) which in turn pushes people away.

he is closeted, traumatised, socially inept, and those things in combination with his powers and, frankly, aesthetic, make other people uncomfortable around him. it’s clear why they feel that way, even if it’s not ‘right’. but we as the reader have the context of nico’s trauma and some insight into his own feelings, especially post ruins of salona, so we feel the injustice of their treatment of him and can understand the full situation. and even percy, who has a huge heart and cares about nico’s wellbeing, wasn’t sure that nico would ever fit in at camp half blood.

jason and reyna are both forced to spend time with him, and steadily grow to understand what happened to him and how it affected him. from there they can build relationships with him and start to knock down some of his walls by demonstrating that they care about him.

but the WHOLE point about will is that he never thought of nico like that at all. he saw nico probably at his best, while he was first at camp half blood, after the battle of manhattan etc. we have no idea the details, how well they knew each other, how they felt about each other, but we do know that will doesn’t see nico as scary, or an outsider, or anything of the sort. when nico speaks about himself like that, will either mocks the idea that he’s scary (’right now you couldn’t summon a wishbone’) or actually gets angry (in front of dozens of roman soldiers and a power hungry teenage dictator, because will solace famously knows how to pick his moments).

it’s not that will is objectively right, either. nico HAS been rejected and seen as scary. it’s just that that’s not how will sees him: will likes him as a person. end of story.

so the whole POINT of nico’s arc, his story, is that those powerful preconceptions he has about himself, that affected how other people saw him and treated him, that defined his whole life and were about to cause him to run away forever, were just a matter of perception. that’s why bianca mattered so much to him, and i think why he clung to and idealised her for so long after her death; she treated him like a person and knew him before people started seeing him as some scary outsider. once will comes in and shatters the idea that nico’s self-image is a concrete fact of the universe, that he is doomed to be a lonely outcast of whom everyone is terrified forever, nico can finally start to reverse the vicious cycle he’s found himself in and take back some agency over his own life.

think hazel’s line from trials of apollo that’s something along the lines of ‘it’s not that i need a man to solve my problems but being loved can help’. in the same way that she and frank escape their curses just by having each other to rely on, will’s insistence about the way he sees nico enables nico to escape his own ‘curse’ of feeling rejected and unloved.
