I've been working on a little series of blog posts that bring together what I know about folklore creatures in Scottish traditional lore; rather than sharing them individually I thought I'd keep them all together and add to this post as I go.

Disclaimer: these blogs are largely what I've heard about these creatures from older family members and what I've learned from folktales in books (both children's collections and less sugar coated adult books) - folklore is notoriously complex. While I did secondary research, these posts represent my understanding as someone who grew up in the central belt of Scotland, so you may have heard different versions of the same stories, or read different stories entirely.

I AM SCREECHING THIS IS SO AMAZING!!!Look at their expressions! The feelings are so strong and the angst and desperation is so well captured. I am completely in luv. The way how pale she is, leaving her to look almost ghostlike, is such a great detail. Especially guiding it to the source of her powers, showing where all her energy goes. Along with it having a rather dark twist with the purple and blood ;w; The background is just exactly as in the scene 🥺🥺🥺

This is such a masterpiece ♥️♥️♥️

For all those who would like to read the scene; @chaoschaoswriting did such a superb, perfect job in creating this angst. Read a short snippet under the cut!

"They stood in the mouth of the cave for a few moments, looking at the downpour that had started after they entered. The ground had turned to a quagmire already, and would soon be a swamp. Vasco tried to touch her arm, but she recoiled as if burned and stepped out into the rain. Three steps, that was all it took for her to realize that something was wrong, but by then it was too late: Kurt had been by her side after the first, Vasco and Síora followed shortly after. Two men stepped from the shadows to block the entrance as she turned to speak and a gunshot rang out in the sodden gloom that had gathered under roiling storm clouds and, predictably enough for Pheobe De Sardet, all hell broke loose in a matter of seconds.

The first man fell to a well-placed shot from Vasco’s pistol, the second seemed to burst as Kurt brought his sword down in an over-shoulder swing. Pheobe’s magic gathered like a storm and the rain around her fell in sharp, icy shards, crashing to the ground as she felled a gunner, ice puncturing his chest, holding him aloft for a few moments before it snapped and he fell to the ground. The thunderclap of a rifle sounded and Kurt fell to the ground but rose snarling; the metal pauldrons and chest piece she had helped him to craft were bent but not breached. Pheobe whirled to send a lance of ice towards a man behind Síora, enabling her to send roots to ensnare two men as they tried to crowd Kurt into a corner. They seemed to crumple even as a shot from Vasco took down a man in her peripheral vision and Kurt spilled the guts of the last man before him.

The battle had lasted less than three minutes, she would have guessed. No time at all. An eternity. Her body ached with exertion, her heart thudded fast and hard. Pheobe took a deep breath. She was alive. They were all alive.

A final shot rang out, breaking through the sound of the rain; Síora and Kurt whirled to face her, and pressure hit her back, bearing her down to the ground. The rumble of roots bursting through the ground followed a warm spray of blood that quickly dissipated into the puddles forming in the sodden ground.

The weight on her back was too much; she pressed her hands to the ground and tried to push away but her arms shook and gave in. Kurts boots thudded into view and the weight suddenly lessened. Despite this, Pheobe felt heavier than she ever had in her life. She knew even before she turned that it would be Vasco. It had to be. If it was not, the shot would have hit her. Despite the logical train of thought, there was a sudden and brutal wave of agony that tore through her. Vasco was already going grey; the shot was horrifyingly precise. Lodged just under his heart. The blood was pouring from his body - had it been her she would have died on impact, but he was taller. Such a small thing as an inch, Pheobe realized, could make the difference between a chance at life and instant death. She scrambled to his side,

“Vasco, don’t you dare,” she sobbed, “don’t you dare rob me of the chance to be angry with you.” She said it with a bleak laugh and he grinned,

“I wouldn’t dream of it, Tempest,” he said, “I’ve got a lot of groveling… to…” his eyes were already starting to glaze,

“No, no, Vasco,”

“I love you,” he whispered, “you know that, yes?”

“Of course, I love you too - I never stopped,” Pheobe gripped his face and kissed his lips, “just hold on,” she said and turned her head, “Síora - Síora, please. Just hold - hold- Vasco?” His eyes were half-closed, his broad shoulders were soft, his body seemed to be losing all its power and her world was closing in. Where was Síora? She gripped his shirt, body cold and humming with electric panic, “no. Vasco, please.” There was a smile on his lips, but it was fading.

Two, cold certainties washed over her. Firstly, Vasco would die if he kept bleeding like this. Secondly, she could stop the blood from flowing out of his body. The only questions were how long she could hold it, and whether Vasco’s battered body could stand it. She drew a breath and corralled the fizzing panic into a sharp, hard point in her stomach and rolled her sleeves up, pushing it all, the anger, the hurt, the blinding fear, into her hands and out to Vasco. She found the blood quickly; it was heavier than water, of course, but it also fought to go its own way. Fought so hard that Pheobe could actually feel her own energy draining from her body,

“Greenblood- Pheobe,” Kurts voice was so far away, so distant, but his hand tugged at her shoulder, “you’re going to-”

“Síora! I need you!” The first word was a scream, a plea; she was on fire, drowning. The rain stung her eyes, and the tendons on her neck blazed with the effort. Under that howl was a weaker, deeper cry; Vasco was gasping for air as if he was being choked. The gasping cries were barely audible above the rain and her own desperate scream, but the pain on his face was like a knife in her gut. Síora skidded into view and pressed her hands over his wounds as the world began to swim. How many seconds had it been? Three? Five? How long could his heart bear this? How long could hers? Pheobe, always silver and milk and sea breeze, was suddenly an inferno. Her heart reached a fever pitch, her eyes started to close, and a warm gush of blood went from her nose down to her chin and neck. Just as she was sure she would faint and leave him to die, a warm glow flared around Síora’s hands and the wound in Vascos chest started to knit together. The small iron shot worked its way out of the wound like a pustule and the wound closed behind it. Pheobe slumped across Vasco’s chest, body trembling violently, and felt the cold rain seep into her back and slide down to pool in the space between them. The thunder of the rain and the fuzzy hum of Síora and Kurt's voices just above her was somehow comforting, but the exhaustion was more than she could bear. The world dimmed and blackened, but Vasco’s heart was beating weakly beneath her and his breaths were regular, if somewhat quick and fevered. He would live."

🌙Illustration: A completely rendered artwork in my style, simple background and gradients have no charge, more complex ones start from 15$ and go up. The prices are here for one character! If you would like to add another it's +80% of the base price for one character. If you would like me to draw an additional animal (depending on complexity and size) it would be +20%-50% of the base price.

🌙Chibi: Please specify the type you would like (more like a simple scenery or sticker type!) You will get my classic styled bubble heads with simplified outfits and features! Backgrounds will be simple only as well, or if you would like some cute items, please ask me about it!

🌙Character Sheet: you will get a sheet of your chosen character with 3 clean headshots - completely rendered and 3 full body (one pose) outfits in a simple coloration! (Please provide a bunch of references for this commission type!)

🌙Photobooth Couple: 4 different sketch-y headshot pictures in black and white of the couple (or friends) you would like! You may request for +30$ a simple coloration on it as well instead of black and white!

🌙Sweet Kisses: a headshot artwork of your favorite kissing couple! Perfect for any OTP ♥️

🌙Sketch portrait: a headshot sketch-y artwork of your chosen character!
