Chapter 1., Chapter 2., Chapter 3.
One of the most commonly known sayings among mankind is that just because we're connected to someone by blood doesn't always mean we're family. And as painful as this may sound, it is often also true. But many times the universe decides to be so generous with us as to allow us to share some of the most profound bonds with those who we share the blood connection with. However, people often don't realize that they've been chosen as the lucky few until it is too late, whether the bond was divided by a heart-wrenching fight or death itself. And once the connection is taken away, all that's left behind is an empty space desperately longing to be filled. Even though Y/N has always treasured the fact that she belonged amongst the chosen ones, she has never expected her invitation to be taken away from her so soon.
From the very beginning of her life, her heart and soul were intertwined with those of her dear brother. The two of them bonded fairly quickly and soon shared every aspect of their lives with each other. One of the things they shared together has later been their job, or as they liked to call it, their purpose of life.
Ever since they were little, their childhood plays consisted of becoming superheroes and saving the lives of those in need, and they always hoped for their life to one day become it. Though again, what child doesn't wish for their dreams to come true?
So then one day, after their entire lives were dedicated to bettering themselves, whether it was in combat or knowledge, after several Ph.D.'s and way too many sleepless nights and wishes whispered into the dark, the universe got so fed up with their prayers that it decided to grant them their wishes. And so Y/N and her brother were soon recruited to become the agents of an organization called S.H.I.E.L.D.
It didn't take long for them to learn everything needed to get through the often torturous training and were soon cleared to participate in real missions. The very first ones tended to be simple, and usually only consisted of gaining information and then quickly slipping out, and then when there was nothing of such sort for them to do, they'd return to fill in their empty spots in laboratories. But once the harder missions came by, they often consisted of having to do one of the most unbearable things on earth. Robbing another human being of their privilege of life.
The very first kill was the hardest one, and no matter how trained Y/N was for it, the pull of the trigger still broke something inside her. And so she had to let her soul harden for her to be able to get through it, to be able to continue with ridding the world of villain and making the world a better place. And with the help of her brother, she often did. No matter how many lives the both of them have taken, they always knew that they still had each other, that they had someone to rely on, someone to pour the blood of their broken heart to, someone who would wash off the blood on their hands.
It didn't matter what kind of a mission they got assigned to, for they always had each other's backs, always protected each other from the harm of the world. Until one of the most dreadful days of Y/N's life came by. The day when she couldn't do anything to protect her brother, the day when she had to watch as every single drop of life left his body at the hand of a murderous monster. The monster she has seen take lives of others before. The monster that was hidden deep inside a man who now lay in front of her, buried in deep slumber, restrained like a wild animal. And yet the more she let her eyes wander along each detail of him, the more she took his appearance in, the more his looks resembled the ones of an angel. Though she knew that deep down, the monster was still hidden, waiting for a thread of words calling for him to kill again. And she felt more confused than ever, for how could she feel so drawn to someone who has destroyed her entire life?
„They're about to wake him“ a soft yet deep voice echoed beside her, making her jump slightly as it pulled her from her thoughts. Steve provided her with an apologetic glance once he realized what he had done before continuing.
„I don't think you want to see this. I myself probably wouldn' t be able to stomach the way they treat him if I saw it. Besides, our presence is required in the auditorium. It's gonna start soon, we should get going“ his eyebrows furrowed in concern as he pointed at the iron door only a few meters away from them.
„We should. Let's go then before they drag us in there by force“ she chuckled nervously as she proceeded to walk towards the door, sending one last glance towards the restrained man behind the glass.
„So... have you decided how you're gonna testify?“ Steve asked as they made their way down the hall, trying to avoid bumping into any of the agents rushing through the building. The building they got brought to in handcuffs after countless agents filled her house not long after she watched Bucky's body crumble to the ground. She felt relieved because it meant that he would get the care needed to save his life, but she also feared for her own life.
She sent a quick glance Steve's way once more before returning her gaze to the ground. She understood his concern, for this could change the life of his dearest friend forever. So she just shook her head as she diverted her gaze towards the ground, trying not to get lost in her thoughts again.
„I know this is hard for you. I know it's a hard decision. But please don't let the weight of the situation cloud your judgment“ he pleaded as he sent another concerned glance her way.
„Don't worry, Stevie. You don't need to give me the dad talk. I'm gonna try to do the right thing, even if I may not know what it is yet.“ she tried to reassure him with the most genuine smile she could conjure up at that moment, and she could clearly see as relief took residence in his eyes.
„Thank you,“ he whispered as he squeezed her shoulder, „For everything“ he quickly added before smiling at her warmly.
„Don't thank me yet. You and I both know this isn't really a trial. Their decision has already been made, they're just doing this because they have to, because they otherwise wouldn't be able to do what they have planned for him. Even if I try to do my best and they'll let us say what we hold in our hearts, they're still gonna try to twist our words, try to make of them what will only help their cause. Even if we only have the purest of intentions, this could still end horribly for Bucky“ she contemplated as she tried to search Steve's eyes, not sure what to make of what she saw in them
„I know“ Steve nodded his head, sadness lacing his voice. He smiled at her as he opened the door for her.
She took in a deep breath to try and steady herself before she entered the room, all eyes turning towards them. Her heartbeat resonated louder and louder in her years with each step she took, not calming down even after she claimed her seat next to Wanda. Steve was seated right opposite her, which she was greatly thankful for. Though she wasn't allowed to talk to anyone, she still let her eyes wander across the faces of her fellow teammates, the faces of people she loved dearly. She could feel tears starting to burn their way into her eyes, for only then did she realize how much she truly missed them. And after a while of stolen glances and an enormous amount of deep breaths, she felt a soft touch on her hand followed by a reassuring squeeze which sent a wave of calmness through her body, the tiny hand belonging to none other than Wanda.
Y/N knew it wasn't Wanda's magic that calmed her down, because as she turned her head towards her to thank her with a smile, she noticed a black collar like device attached to her neck which was seemingly sending tiny electric shocks into her body. Y/N furrowed her eyebrows as her eyes scanned the people around her once more, and she noticed that every single one of her fellow teammates had the same device attached on various parts of their bodies as well. The same device that was placed on her ankle as well.
A wave of anger ran through her veins as her lungs burned with the deep breath she took in, her teeth hurting from the pressure of her tightened jaw. The anger only seemed to amplify as the doors opened once more, revealing dozens of guards with guns in their hands surrounding Bucky's body which was tied with various shackles, which too seemed to be sending shocking impulses through his body every second.
He was soon dragged into the room, and seated in front of the table where everyone sat, his head hung low with his face hidden behind his hair, his chest rising with each rapid breath he took. The guards joined the ones already in the room that were positioned in each corner, two of them remaining closely behind where Bucky sat.
The room fell silent, the air got thicker with each passing second as tension spread throughout the room before nothing could be heard but the scratching of a chair dragged across the floor as one of the councilmen stood up, buttoning up his blazer as he made his way to the front of the room where everyone would be able to see him clearly.
„Ladies and gentlemen, you've been brought here today to testify against the crimes of James Buchanan Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier. All your testimonies will be taken into consideration, though they may not change our final decision.“ the councilman said in a stern, cold voice before stopping abruptly as a soft ´Of course not´ could be heard, said by none other than Y/N herself. She only tightened her jaw more as the councilman sent her a quick angry glance before continuing.
„We will begin with the testimony of Anthony Stark. Mr. Stark, if you may“ he indicated for Tony to start as he sat down.
„Ya know, I think this whole circus is pointless, as we all already know that you don't care about our opinion, you never do, though, so nothing new here. I will, however, say that even though Bucky has committed some horrible crimes, including killing both of my parents in cold blood, it wasn't really him who acted out those commands. I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished for them. I'm saying that he shouldn't be the only one. How about you punish all the Hydra members as well, hm? Like your precious Alexander Pierce and also-“ he spoke angrily before getting interrupted.
„Okay, I think that's enough, we've taken notice of your opinion“ the councilman tried to stop him from saying anything else, getting to stand up again.
„No honestly, though. I could name so many more. Why only melt one side of the coin? Ah-“ Tony's voice got cut off as a wave of electricity ran through his body, torturous pain making him unable to speak.
„This is illegal. You can't just cut him off because you don't like what he's saying“ Sam yelled out as he pointed his hand in Tony's direction while staring down the councilman angrily.
„Yes, we can. You've given us the permission by signing the Sokovia accords. We're allowed to eliminate any threat you bring with yourself. We will proceed with our next subject“ the councilman continued.
Y/N could feel her anger amplifying with each testimony she heard, each of them cut off once they didn't like the words their „subjects“ were sharing. The air tightened with every word, the situation not getting any better.
„Miss Y/L/N, it's your turn now“ the voice of the councilman pulled her out of her thoughts, and she could feel everyone's eyes on her. She breathed in as she looked around the room, trying to make sense of her thoughts, the ringing in her years and the resonation of her heartbeat against her chest making it almost impossible. All the messy thoughts suddenly stopped as her eyes met with the icy blue eyes of the man who's life felt to be in her hands, and suddenly she felt like she couldn't breathe. It seemed as if everything depended on her words, yet she herself wasn't sure what to think of the situation as each word she heard during the trial changed her opinion completely. And so she stood up and clenched her fists so tightly she could feel her nails piercing through her skin, and as she proceeded to talk, she deeply wished for her words to not ruin the life of a man she was falling in love with.

Since the beginning of time, the infinite pathways of our universe have been overflowing with countless ideas, dreams and sometimes even unexplainable mysteries, some of which were predestined to make the universe a better, brighter place, while others have been waiting in the dark shadows for their opportunity to thrust the world into its decadence. Many were created by the brightest of minds, and even if they might outnumber the drops of water on this planet, there still are things even the greatest of scientists can't seem to understand, therefore provide an explanation for.
One of these things is something people have been failing to understand throughout hundreds of centuries, and after deep consideration of what this thing might even mean, have come up with the simplest of names for such a revolutionary matter. A soulmate is what they decided to call it.
Though the existence of soulmates has been waving with the world for decades, an explanation still hasn't been provided, and so people grew so desperate to understand this concept that even the simplest stories seemed to satisfy their need. Then again, what even is a world without stories?
Some legends told the story of a time when the body of a person, or rather two people, consisted of two heads and two pairs of limbs. After some time, however, they have become too powerful, selfish and greedy, for there was nothing they were missing in their lives, as they were already connected to the person they were always meant to be with. So the mighty Zeus decided to divide them into two separate beings condemned to roam the planet utterly alone, with loneliness burning their souls until they found their one true love.
While some people believed these legends, others believed that the cause of this all was that the atoms that were the closest to each other when the world was created will forever find their way back together, thus explaining the existence of soulmates.
Though no one completely knew why or how this was possible, they were still certain it was true, for every person saw their soulmate in each and every one of their dreams. The sad thing about this though is that the longer it takes someone to find their soulmate the less they remember until they forget their soulmate completely.
Even though this all was a knowledge carved into the very point of the existence of mankind, Y/N desperately wanted not to believe it, because she didn't want her existence to depend on someone else. She wanted to be her own person, be in charge of her own life and fate. Or at least that was what she told herself. What the reality truly held, however, was fear.
Y/N has always been frightened of the idea because while there were people who could clearly see who their soulmate was, she has always only seen their outline. And the more she thought about it, the more time she spent on trying to figure out who they are and find them only to fail miserably, the deeper the knife in her heart sunk. She feared that she'd end up like one of those people who never find their soulmate, and in time forget them. And when the pain of it becomes too much to bear, they spend their life with someone who doesn't belong to them instead. And there's no greater pain than that.
She desperately wanted to be angry and yell her lungs out into the world. Angry at herself, because how could she not recognize the face of the one who was supposed to love her unconditionally until the end of time? Angry at the universe, because how could it be so cruel and deny her even one glimpse of the one her life was supposed to consist of?
The anger, however, didn't last long and was soon replaced by utter loneliness and confusion. She felt confused, for how could she miss and long for someone she has never met? Lonely because the desire of her heart and soul was never fulfilled, leaving her more empty each passing day.
She tried to talk about it in hope that someone out there might understand and maybe even help, but those words burned. The way they sounded petrified her, for they seemed to dissolve through the air like liquid poison. She tried to bleed her heart out and watch the paper consume her pain and rid her of it while making it its own, but all she ended up with was more pain burning her soul, and an empty paper staring right back at her in an almost mocking way. She tried anything she could think of in hope of clouding the dull ache rooted deep within her soul but nothing seemed to work. And when another day full of failed attempts and disappointment has passed, she found herself seated on a wooden stool of a perhaps too empty bar, trying to defeat one poison with another.
„The usual?“ the tall bartender, whose name she has learned was Steve, asked with a worried smile while drying a cup with his apron. She winced at the thought that she had been there so often, that she had sunk so low as to be associated with ´her usual´. She couldn't divert her gaze from her hands, so she only nodded, heat spreading through her cheeks.
„Still haven't figured out who they are?“ Steve attempted to start a conversation again.
There were days when Y/N wished he'd just leave her alone with the bitter taste of alcohol on her tongue distracting her from the troubles of the world, despite knowing he only meant well. But then there were days like this one when she'd do anything for even a small exchange of words, even though she knew they only came from pitty, but anything was better than the agonizing pain crushing her bones.
„No“ she let out a shaky breath „What am I doing wrong?“ she asked with her voice breaking mid-sentence as she let out a dry laugh while running her shaky fingers through her hair.
„I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Perhaps it's meant to be this way. Maybe this is the way the universe wants it to be“ he tried to reason after contemplating the matter, but failed at making her feel better.
„Then the universe is pretty sadistic“ she lamented as she sipped on her drink, the liquid burning its way down her throat. She couldn't decide whether the disgusting taste was more bitter than her feelings.
„Or empathetic. Maybe this is the best way for you. Maybe your soulmate is someone bad that would only ruin your life and the universe is just trying to protect you“ he sang out, optimism lighting up his eyes as he refilled her cup.
„It's a soulmate. Isn't their purpose to make you the best version of yourself? To make your life the best it can be?“ she asked, amusement being the clearest component of her voice while leaning back in her chair, her arms crossing across her chest.
„Ah, that's probably true“ Steve mumbled, his cheeks tinted in the softest shade of pink, as he mimicked her actions while leaning against the counter.
Y/N only smiled at this, her mind swirling with an endless spiral of thoughts
„Have you met your soulmate?“ she blurted out without thinking, instantly regretting it when she saw the sad smile that graced Steve's lips. She watched him breathe deeply, clearly contemplating his answer.
„I have,“ he decided to answer after a while, swallowing dryly before continuing. “Her name was Peggy. And she was the most beautiful being I've ever seen. Life with her was just worth it no matter how bad it got. She always believed in me and saw my potential. Way before I became the person I am today,“ Steve's smile never left his lips when he spoke, though Y/N wasn't sure whether he was still there with her, or whether he has left her to run around in his thoughts
„Was?“ another regretted question left her mouth, though she couldn't stop herself, the alcohol already clouding her judgment. Steve only smiled so sweetly it almost made her sick.
„I um… We weren't together for long before… before the world got in the way in dire need of help. And when I came back, it was too late. And the loss… the loss nearly tore me apart. And I can't help but think about how things could have been if I had never met her. That's why I think that not meeting your soulmate is often the better option. Because if you never meet them, you just forget them after some time, and then you just get to live your life as if nothing ever happened. But when you do meet them and the universe decides to take them away from you, you can't ever escape the pain that comes with that. And it just... tears you apart. And you have to find a way to live with that, to wake up, collect your shattered pieces from the floor and glue them back together only for them to fall apart once again when the sun sets at night. That pain is just unbearable.“ Steve mourned, tears glistening in his eyes as his breathing became more uneven with each sentence.
„I'm sorry“ Y/N knew these words weren't enough, but there wasn't anything else she could offer. Steve only shook his head and provided her with another sweet smile.
„Don't be. Once you learn how to live with it, the world becomes bearable again“ he tried to reassure her, before making his way to his next customer, who she hasn't even noticed before.
She took her time to think about what he said to her. And maybe Steve was right. Maybe it truly was possible to live without your soulmate. He himself was a living proof of that after all. And so after deep consideration, Y/N decided to leave this part of her life behind, and rather to chase after what the pressure of society was telling her to do, she'd try to live for what her heart was telling her instead.
She smiled to herself as she got off the stool and turned towards the door, ready to walk through them and start a new chapter of her life, only to be met by the icy blue eyes she knew way too well.
She froze in her spot, a high pitched ringing resonating in her ears as the room suddenly began spinning. The air seemed too thick for her to breathe, her heartbeat too rapid for her to bear.
It was him, the man of her dreams, the same dark brown hair laminating his jaw, the too familiar icy blue eyes sending chills down her spine. An unexplainable feeling suddenly overcame her, and it seemed as if all the poetry and declarations of love in the world finally made sense to her.
The saltiness of her hot tears stung her eyes, and she let out a shaky breath through her smile. But her heart shattered again when he only gave her a cold, determined stare before turning around and running out the door. She didn't know how to react, too shocked to even breathe. And before she could register what was happening, she was already running out the door after him, the cold night air brushing past her.
„Wait!“ she yelled after him, in a voice perhaps too desperate, and the world felt like a dream, like when no matter how fast you're trying to run, you're still glued to the same spot.
„Wait, please!“ she pleaded, and she wasn't sure what made him stop, but once he turned to face her again, his cold stare made her wish he never did.
„What? What do you want?“ he barked in a voice so rough she could feel it scratching at her skin.
„I.. it- it's you. You're the one. You belong to me“ she laughed out, a smile too bright gracing her lips, and when she got close enough to be able to take in every detail of him, she wasn't able to do anything else but let out a soft gasp. And for a split second, she thought she saw his features soften, something similar to relief reflecting in his eyes. But before she could even blink again,  his eyes changed back to their seemingly permanent frozen stare, his features as stern he seemed to be made of stone. And with another disgusted stare sent towards her, he took a step back from her.
„I'm not a thing to belong to someone. I'm not anyone's property“ he stated in a shallow voice as he turned away from her once more. „No that...that's not what I meant. What I meant is that you're my soulmate. We were destined to be together“ she whispered, her eyebrows furrowing as she silently followed him. She felt sick and she wanted to laugh at how pathetic she sounded, at how she surely must have looked like a lost puppy.
„Are you even hearing yourself? You sound ridiculous. Do you honestly believe these stories?“ he barked, abruptly turning around, which almost made her collide with his chest.
„What do you… Have you never seen me in your dreams?“ she shuddered, eyebrows furrowing once more as she shook her head in confusion.
„No“ he hissed, his voice so sharp it could cut through steel, as he turned around to walk away again.
„I don't believe you! That's not how it works“ she cried out as she clenched her fists, heat spreading through her cheeks, suddenly feeling infuriated with the situation.
„What the hell do you want me to say? I don't give a goddamn crap about this shit. Just stop yelling and leave me alone“ he seethed, quickly looking back at her over his shoulder.
„Leave you alone? You're honestly just going to walk away from me? I've been waiting my entire life for you! I deserve at least an explanation! Why are you acting like such an ass?“ she could feel her blood boiling in her veins, but the pain of that didn't even come close to the one of her whole world falling apart under his harsh stare.
„I don't owe you anything! I don't even know you, do you honestly think I care for you? I don't want anything to do with you“ he barked as he turned to face her once more, instant regret washing over him as his eyes met hers, and he saw something inside her break.
„Look, I'm sorry,“ he started, and Y/N let out a soft scoff as she bit her lip, looking everywhere else but him as she desperately tried to hold her tears in.
„I never stood a chance, did I?“ she said in a voice almost too quiet even for her to hear as she looked at the ground, hot tears leaving salty trails on her cheeks. She bit on the inside of her cheek as she sniffled, her lungs suddenly too tight for her to be able to breathe.
„That's the sad part. You did once“ he let out through shaky lips as he reached towards her to cup her cheek in his hand. Y/N closed her eyes at the sensation, breathing out a teary breath to try and steady herself so she could continue.
„What do you mean?“ she looked him in the eyes, and when she saw his tear stained cheeks, all the things she thought she understood suddenly made no sense at all.
„There… there used to be a time, a long time ago, when I would dream of you every night. And I'd wake up in the morning desperately wishing to find you. I longed to be with you, and the longer I was without you, the harder it was for me to live. But then some.. bad people got to me. And they did terrible things to me, things that made me do unimaginable things. And once I broke from their grasp, I couldn't live with myself, I couldn't live with the horrible person I've become. So I vowed to myself that I'd never try to find you again, that I'd keep myself as far away from you as possible. And it was working, until now. I don't know how I found you, but I honestly didn't mean for this to happen. And I wish I could take this moment back. As much as I long to be with you, I know I'm no good for you. I've done horrible things in my life. I don't deserve to be with you“ he tried to reason with her, his voice breaking as he spoke, the agonizing pain of the moment too much for him to handle.
„You're my soulmate. We're meant to be together. If you didn't deserve me, you'd be destined to be with someone else“ she desperately tried to explain, to make him see that she'd love him through everything, but he only shook his head as he stepped away from him once more, the newly created space between them so cold it made her shiver.
„Perhaps you're right. But I can't be with you. I don't want to. Not anymore, not when I know that you can live a better life without me. I’m sorry it had to happen like this, but you deserve better.“ he stated, taking a step back with each word, and when he saw how his words wounded her, it made him hate himself even more, for he hurt the one thing he'd love until the end of time. What made him able to continue though was the knowledge that he was only doing this for her own good. Y/N knew there wasn't anything in the world she could do or say that would make him stay, she saw it in his eyes, his soul. So she only nodded her head, and despite her whole world crumbling to dust around her, she knew she had to let him go.
„What even is your name?“ she whispered into the night, hoping her voice would reach him.
„Bucky“ he answered in a soft voice, and it was the last thing she ever heard from him.
Hot tears stained down her cheeks as she hugged herself tightly, hoping her arms would be enough to contain her breaking pieces. And as she watched him disappear into the night, she knew that without him, all the poetry within her was dead.

The fleeting seconds dividing the land of dreams and consciousness are often the most painful ones, for you can't yet tell the difference between what's made up by your desire and what the reality truly holds. Glimpses of the perfect world lighten the painful truth, while tiny aspects of reality tear apart the once too perfect dream with a fiery blade. What can ease the shattering pain of the moment is perhaps a loving touch to remind us that the reality might not be so bad after all, even if its greatest wish is often to prove us otherwise.
Rugged fingers danced their way across Y/N's cheek, all the way down to her lips where they barely lingered before she could feel their tickle on her neck. She tried to bury herself further into her pillow, her eyebrows furrowing slightly for she wasn't sure whether what she was feeling was true or not, though she felt like it must have been a dream she so desperately wanted to return to. She breathed in, completely sure that the desired return to the dreamland was now out of her reach, and when the too familiar scent of her loved one filled her lungs, her eyes opened rapidly.
The darkness was still too blinding for her to see, and she so desperately wished to be able to see his face, to be able to gaze into his eyes before it all fell apart.
Quickening heartbeat deafening her, the deep breath she took in was still poisoning her lungs, for she knew that the moment wouldn't last for much longer. She knew she had only until the first words left his mouth. After that, dark thoughts would fill his mind, and he'd no longer allow her anywhere near him. And so while the withering dawn was still hidden by the dark night, and while the man beside her whom she loved perhaps too deeply was still silent, she leaned in until her lips touched his, a kiss too slow for her liking, yet she poured all the love she held for him into it.
The sound of her shaky breath filled the room after the kiss was broken. The tears in her eyes burned with the unfulfilled desire of her dreams. She desired for him to mend, to finally find happiness in this cold world, and then perhaps one day share a life with him. She hated to be so selfish as to wish she could be his happiness, for her love to help mend him. Little did she know that she was all the happiness in Bucky's life.
He loved her dearly, perhaps far too much for his liking. And he hated that he couldn't give her what she truly deserved. A happy life full of love, a hand she could hold on to that would never let go. But he was too much of a coward to let her go, even if he knew that he wasn't able to give her any of that. So he selfishly held to all she offered to him, the fact that he couldn't offer just as much tearing him to bits. He so desperately wanted to, but all he had to offer were broken pieces.
Oddly enough, he didn't feel so broken in that moment. And so he leaned in until his lips were met by her cheek, and he made it his mission for her jaw, her neck and collarbones to be framed by his kisses. His loving caresses didn't stop until he was sure his mission was completed to its fullest until there was no inch of her skin left unkissed. And when the broken fragments of desire left her eyes in the form of salty tears, he made sure to kiss those as well.
Her shaking fingers reached for his cheek slowly, lovingly caressing it, too afraid to cross any boundaries, too afraid it would all end far too soon. She wasn't ready to let go yet. To return to the cold reality where his touch, his love felt like nothing but a mere memory. But at that moment, neither was he.
Leaning his forehead against her own, he wished he could bask in her love for a bit longer. He wished he didn't have to leave her. But he felt his broken pieces scratching at his insides, threatening to pierce through his skin. Too afraid she would cut herself on his sharp pieces, he slowly pulled away.
The newly created distance between them breaking him even more, a pained expression marking his features. The sheets suddenly felt too rough against his skin, the air too cold. He breathed in a breath that felt too heavy, too afraid to look into her eyes.
„What did you dream about?“ his raspy voice echoed through the dark in a broken whisper, and her soul bled, for she knew his words meant the end of this moment. The end of her invitation to be close to him. She swallowed dryly, a smile far too sweet compared to what she truly felt, gracing her lips.
„You“ she admitted, too afraid of his reaction. She drew in a quick breath to try and steady herself before she continued. „My dreams are only made of you“.
Her words wounded him, though he wasn't sure why. It should make him feel special, shouldn't it? That even in a place where she could be anything and with anyone, she still chose to be with him.
„I wish I could say the same,“ he mumbled, afraid his voice was too quiet for her to hear, though secretly wishing for it to be before admitting to his dark truth.
„But my dreams are only ever of you when I'm hurting you. And so I'd rather not dream at all.“ he smiled apologetically before frowning when he saw disappointment flash across her features.
„I'm sorry“ his voice weary, too afraid she'd run away. And she knew he wasn't referring just to his dreams.
„Don't be. Don't ever be sorry for anything, my love. I still have these moments, and I'm grateful you're willing to share them with me. It's much more than I could ever ask for.“ she tried to reassure him.
„I wish I could give you more“ he admitted, his eyebrows furrowing.
„You don't have to“ she shook her head.
„But I want to. I truly do. I just have nothing to offer you“ he closed his eyes for a second, too afraid to look into her eyes.
„You're the only thing I wish for. And as long as you allow me to be close to you, everything else doesn't matter.“ she drew the words from the bottom of her soul.
He wished he could show her how much she truly meant to him, and so he did something she never thought he would. He leaned in and kissed her one more time, even after his thoughts tried to cloud his mind. The kiss far more meaningful than any other, because she felt that he finally let her in a bit more.
He caressed her cheek even after they broke from the kiss, his touch soft and slow. She wished he wouldn't notice the surprise she felt, but of course, he saw it in her eyes. He couldn't blame her though, for he never touched her after he spoke. Until now.
She reached for his hand on her cheek and softly pulled it to her lips, leaving a loving kiss on his palm. She feared she crossed the line when she saw him furrowing his eyebrows. Bucky swallowed dryly, not understanding how she could do this.
„How can you love me, touch me as sweetly as you do? How can you hold my hands so lovingly? One hand made for holding weapons, the other one a weapon itself“ he stated, more to himself than to her, while shaking his head.
And his words broke her soul, for she wished he'd see himself as everyone else did. A hero, a survivor.
„That's not true at all, dear. You might think so now, I just wish there will one day come a moment when you'll realize that even if your hands hold weapons, they no longer take lives, but rather save them. But since your hand is now still without a tool, though it wasn't meant for it, let me show you what it was made for. It was meant for this“ she said as she placed his hand on her cheek, and he ran his thumb across it. He smiled through his tears as she then kissed his palm once more. And he couldn't hold back his tears any longer, so he brought her closer and buried his head into her neck, warm tears running down his cheeks.
„I'm so sorry. I love you very much. I wish I could be what you deserve“ he whispered in a voice far too broken for her liking. And she suddenly wasn't sure what to do, her chest tightening.
„Shh. It's okay. You're you and you're all I want. It's me who doesn't deserve you. But we have each other, and we'll get through this and then hopefully one day, you won't have to hide from the world, but will come to enjoy it. With me by your side, if you'll have me. Just promise me one thing“ she whispered into his hair and he drew back to look into her eyes.
„Anything“ he whispered, caressing her cheek.
„Return to me, my love“ the dread in her voice too audible, the dawn threatening to take him away from her.
He couldn't do anything but nod, for there was only one thing he was sure of in his life. That no matter what, he'll always come back to her.
„As sure as the rivers reach the seas, I'll always return to you, my love“

Chapter 1., Chapter 2.
The great paradox of this universe is that the closer we are to death, the most alive we wish to be. When we realize our life is about to end, our mind suddenly fills up with an endless spiral of unsaid words and things we wish we had done but never did. Things we were supposed to do in the near future, but now won’t have the chance to fulfill. The time slows down, the air gets thicker and it’s hard for us to even breathe, let alone move to somehow change the course of events that would ensure our survival. And suddenly, all we’re filled up with is regret. The regret of an unlived life. We don’t realize the value and potential of our existence until our existence is no longer our own. And when the regret becomes too heavy to bear, crushing us down, we try our best to hold on to even the slightest glimpse of us still being alive. And how else to know that we’re still alive than to breathe?
And so Y/N breathed in until there was no room left for oxygen in her lungs, thoughts swirling and calculating all possible outcomes of the situation she found herself in. It was, no doubt, either life or death. But would the person she once called her friend really take her life? Was her life even his to take?
It was hard for her to stand, cold sweat tickling down her back and her knees slightly trembling, for she knew that loyalty was the top priority of her former friend. Even if it meant killing the one you once loved dearly.
„Samuel, what are you doing?“ her voice came out surprisingly even, though barely audible. Her hands went up in surrender just as the lights turned back on. She closed her eyes for a split second and breathed out in relief, for it meant that at least Steve was okay. Now she just had to protect Bucky.
She diverted her sight from the head of the gun into her friend’s eyes, What she saw was a person torn between doing what is right and what he ought to.
„Y/N, you know I don’t want to do this. You were once one of my best friends for god’s sake. But now you’re a fugitive, a threat to the nation. And you’re hiding a killer behind your back. A killer capable of killing us all in a blink of an eye, no doubt wanting to“ he tilted his head to the side, his voice strong and firm.
„You know none of that is true. He’s not like that. He didn’t have a choice. They made him like that, they used and abused him. He’s a victim, and now he’s suffering even more because of it. You of all people should know what that’s like“ she tried to reason, to make him see that he has taken the wrong side, though she wasn’t sure what made him change his mind.
„Really? Then why is he reaching for your gun?“ he pointed the gun in his hand at her thing. Only then did she register Bucky’s hand on her thing, suddenly stopping all movement, her breath hitching in her throat.
„Because you’re trying to kill me,“ she said dryly, the words too heavy on her tongue. Something changed in Sam’s eyes once those words left her mouth, and she wasn’t sure whether it was good or bad.
„You’re both a threat that needs to be eliminated“ Sam stated, his teeth scraping as he clenched his jaw. He was just about to pull the trigger when a force suddenly knocked Y/N forward, sending her to the ground and tackling Sam’s body under her own, a loud gunshot resonating throughout the room.
Too shocked to be able to react in any way, she barely registered Sam reaching for his collar, ripping it apart and taking a tiny device out of it, then proceeding to throw it against the wall, it breaking into tiny pieces.
„I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry. Are you okay?“ he pleaded, his arms sneaking around her, bringing her close. He moved their bodies into a sitting position, trying to calm them both down.
„What the hell just happened? You wanted to shoot me you unsalted cracker?!“ she snapped, pushing Sam’s body away from her. She could feel heat spreading through her cheeks as she tried to understand why she suddenly felt so angry, loud ringing resonating in her ears.
„Y/N, for the love of god you know I’d never hurt you. I’m sorry, but I had to do something to avoid suspicion. They have ears everywhere. They’re watching our every step, listening to our every word to ensure our loyalty. I had to say all those things, even if they’re not true. I mean, I don’t really know what to think, man. You did run away, leaving nothing behind. And as far as I know you, you really are a threat to the nation with your clumsy ass and brilliant brain. But there’s no doubt they’ll be coming here shortly because I just threw their little eavesdropping device against the wall. Buckster, how ya doin’?“ Sam said, rubbing his forehead while pulling Y/N’s body up to stand.
Bucky’s only answer was a soft grunt. Y/N was glad to hear her friend's cheerful voice again, a gigantic weight lifting off her chest. A soft chuckle left her lips as she hugged him tightly.
„Yeah, you know why I left, but I’ll explain everything later. He’s not well, I need to tend to his wounds, we don’t have much time and you’re a distraction. Where is Steve?“ she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, turning back to Bucky just in time to stop him from falling forward off the bed.
„You’re okay, you’re alright,“ she said more to herself than to him, trying to steady him by his shoulders, Sam’s hands immediately helping her.
„There’s a steve? Didn’t hear of such thing. And what the hell is wrong with this dude, isn’t he supposed to be healing like, super fast?“ Sam said teasingly, pretending to rub his hands against his pants as if he had just touched the dirtiest thing in the world.
„He is. That’s the problem and I don’t know what’s wrong with him. We need to figure it out“ Y/N said, worry lacing her voice as she reached for a gel and began spreading it on white pieces that would later stick to Bucky’s chest and temples.
„Well Tony blew off his arm, pretty obvious, though, you can’t be that oblivious“ he stated whilst pointing at his missing arm, taking a step back.
„Tony did this? What the hell happened?“ her voice came out sharper than intended, Bucky wincing at the sudden noise so close to him.
„I’m sorry. I need to stick these on your chest and temples, is that okay? They’re neurotransmitters that will help me monitor your heartbeat and brain activity. I need to be able to see any change so I can make sure I don’t accidentally hurt you in any way.“ she informed him while moving closer to him. Bucky only nodded, keeping his eyes on the ground.
„We’ll explain everything later, please just help him. Hey, Sam. Everything alright?“ Steve’s voice came from behind them, his footsteps almost inaudible if it wasn’t for the glass on the ground he shattered more with every step.
„Yeah. If by alright you mean the government basically having us tied on leashes. Which just makes the situation a hundred times worse. Tony’s locked in his lab and he refuses to talk to anybody. Everyone’s on edge, man“ Sam said as he leaned against the table, crossing his arms over his chest.
Once Y/N made sure the white pieces were securely placed on Bucky’s warm chest, she scanned his face with her eyes, trying to determine the state of his mind. She then reached for his face slowly, until her fingers came in contact with his bloody cheek. The soft touch of her fingers made something in Bucky’s stomach twist, and he could feel his chest tightening, making it harder for him to breathe. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, suddenly feeling more alert than ever, and when his cold blue eyes met with hers, his lips slightly parted in realization, for her soft touch made him feel as if he hadn’t been touched for an eternity.
„Are you okay?“ her voice barely audible, yet ever so soft, her own eyebrows furrowing, though not in confusion, but rather in concern. She caressed his cheek in an almost loving way, or so he found himself wishing it to be. He was unable to speak, and so he just nodded slightly, the whole world vanishing from his mind.
Her finger’s moved along his face, barely touching him, for she feared she would somehow scare him away. Once she reached his hair, she tucked it behind his ears and placed the other two neurotransmitters on his temples.
„S.T.O.R.M-B., can you please do a scan of Bucky’s body. I need you to monitor his heartbeat, brain activity and how what’s left of his metal arm is attached to his body.“ Y/N commanded, moving away from Bucky, perhaps too fast for his liking, leaving a cold spot where her hand lay only moments ago, the coldness seemingly running through Bucky’s veins, making him shiver slightly. His world began spinning again as if she lifted off her spell once she stepped away.
„Yes, madam“ the A.I informed. Suddenly, the room filled with blue projections of screens proped by the air., all information about Bucky’s condition written there.
„How did you do this? I thought only Tony was capable of this with his fancy tech. And your house is a dump“ Sam exclaimed, his hands flying upwards in awe.
„Oh god“ Y/N whispered, her eyebrows furrowing in concern. She scanned the screens, trying to process the information as fast as she could, her teeth digging into her lip, quickening heartbeat hammering against her chest. She then ran to the refrigerator that was placed in the corner of the room, taking out a few bags of ice.
„What is it? What’s wrong?“ Steve demanded, worry and confusion lacing his voice, as he leaned forward slightly, his arms crossing on his chest.
„His heartbeat is rapid, and his body is basically on fire. See that?“ she stated, pointing at the scan of Bucky’s body, where his metal arm was attached to his body. Steve nodded his head, his eyebrows furrowing and breath hitching in his throat as he signaled for Y/N to continue.
„Well, what is left of his arm is pretty burnt, and if you heat metal, the heat spreads throughout its entire structure. If you look close enough you can see that the metal is basically welded to his bones and muscles. Which means that seething hot metal was literally in contact with his bones and skin. It must have felt like his entire arm was on fire, except he couldn’t do anything about it. And because the metal is connected even to his ribs, as you can see on the scan, not only were his bones on fire, but the organs near them were pretty much burning with the arm. And there’s no way he could have controlled his arm like he did if it didn't have any intervention and some sort of connection to his brain as well. So not only were his bones and organs on fire but so was his brain. When we sum all that up, he shouldn’t even be alive, which is probably why he isn’t healing as he should be. We need to ice him down“ she mumbled in distress, not sure if her words even made sense while placing the ice bags against Bucky’s skin trying to lower his body temperature.
„No!“ Bucky exclaimed loudly, pushing Y/N’s body harshly, sending her flying across the room. A sharp pain ran through her back as she hit the wall, making her cough.
„Bucky, calm down, it’s okay. We’re not going to hurt you!“ Steve exclaimed as he tried to hold Bucky’s body down in a tight grip, stopping him from punching Sam. Loud beeping filled the room, making them look at the screen in the air.
„Oh god calm him down. Calm him down!“ Y/N proclaimed as she pushed herself off the ground, sharp pain firing up her arm as a piece of glass stuck in her palm. She ran to them just as the loud beeping vanished, leaving the room in a grave silence as Bucky’s lifeless body fell to the ground.

Chapter 1.
It wasn’t an unusual thing for the dim lights in Y/N’s lab to flicker, mostly because the lab wasn’t even supposed to be there, hidden in the back room of her small house, in the first place. But it has been going on for too long this time. There were two possible explanations for this occurrence that went through her mind at that moment. She was either going to be murdered by a ghost in the following minutes, or there was someone interfering with the power line trying to break in.
She nervously scanned the room with her eyes as her mouth went dry at the thought, though she didn’t know which made her feel more anxious. If someone was indeed trying to break in, it would mean that they found her. Which would mean that she would probably have to return to her previous life, and she wasn’t ready for that yet, crippling guilt stopping her from it. Funny thing was that she was even less ready to return to it than she had been to leave it when she had decided to. What gave this fact its great value was that when she left her previous life, she had to leave all she had ever loved behind as well.
Her nostrils burned with the enormous amount of oxygen she breathed in as the lights flickered for the last time before a bright red light flooded the room. Breaking in it was then.
Her first instinct was to ask S.T.O.R.M-B. to inform her of the situation, as she had done countless times before, but she quickly stopped herself before any sound could escape her mouth after she realized that it would only give away her position. A nearly inaudible sound of the pen she was holding a bit too tightly filled the room as she placed it on the table softly. She slowly reached for the holster hugging her thigh which was carefully hidden under her lab coat and her fingers came into contact with two guns. Her head snapped in the direction of the door as the sound of clinking metal filled her ears. It almost sounded like someone was stumbling about, though she couldn’t hear any footsteps. She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion as she slowly made her way towards the glass door, careful not to make any sound. The quick breath she took in to try and steady herself came out in a soft huff as she burst through the door with her gun pointed out in front of her. The hall was nearly completely devoured by darkness, with only the now red light from her lab illuminating it a bit, which made her unable to see anything. Her eyes narrowed instinctively, trying to adjust to the dark as she finally spotted a seemingly tall figure that was bent over as if to support itself against the wall, a gun glistening in one of his hands, his other arm missing. Her quickening heartbeat resonated in her ears as she tried to steady her shaking hands, scrunching her nose as the smell of burnt metal filled her nostrils.
“Who are you?” her voice came out quieter than she intended. She hated it, for it made her sound weak. And weakness was something she couldn’t afford.
“Y/N?” a soft yet deep voice came from behind her, making her jump slightly as she quickly turned around and pointed her second gun at the other intruder, while still keeping her first gun on the man slumped against the wall.
“Easy there. It’s just me” the man said, his hands up in the air to show he meant no harm. She squinted her eyes slightly, the resonation of her heartbeat deafening her as she recognized the voice.
“Steve?” she whispered, her voice so quiet it nearly got lost on its way to him. One simple nod was what made her put down the guns as she ran to him, his chest being the only thing that stopped her. So many questions ran through her mind, almost clouding it completely, but the weight of her friend’s hands on her waist was the only thing she let herself focus on. His embrace never failed to work its magic in calming her down, this time being no different. Though it didn’t last as long as she would want it to.
“I missed you, too. But I need your help” he whispered into her hair, slowly moving away from her. She looked up, her eyes darting across his face. Blood and forming bruises lining his soft features. He seemed to not have changed a bit since she saw him last.
“What happened?” she asked, worry lacing her voice. Steve shook his head as if to tell her not to worry about him. Her fingers danced across his bloody cheek, his eyes darting behind her. Only then did she remember the person leaning against the wall. She swiftly turned around, her heart hammering against her ribcage once again as the realization of his identity hit her.
“Bucky” his name fell from her lips in a whisper. It was as if the time has stopped, leaving her gasping for air. She sneaked her arms around her torso, cold sweat tickling her back.
“Steve, what-”
“It’s okay. It’s Bucky, not the winter soldier.” he tried to reassure her as he spotted panic in her eyes, briefly recalling her last encounter with his friend.
“Please. He needs your help.” Steve stated with pleading eyes, hating to put her in this position, to drag her back into it all again.
“Can’t someone at the compound help him? I don’t think I’m qualified for this.” she blurted out with a choked voice as Steve quickly made his way to his struggling friend, sneaking his arm around his waist, holding him tightly enough to help him support his weight, yet softly enough not to hurt him. He carefully took the gun from his friend’s hand as his weary eyes met hers again.
“It’s complicated. You’re his best, and at the moment, only option”
She wanted to run to him and help him as much as she could, yet she stood frozen in her place. Racing thoughts and high-pitched ringing in her ears making it hard for her to concentrate. She hated that she felt like this, that she couldn’t overcome her fear for the greater good. She didn’t want to be scared of him, for she knew that none of what happened was really him, that it wasn’t his fault, but her subconscious seemed to disagree with her.
“Y/N!” Steve declared loudly, making her snap out of her thoughts. She had to pull it together, and so she dug her nails into her palms as she nodded her head in the direction of her lab. She quickly slipped in, drawing out what seemed to be a rusty patient’s bed from underneath the table.
“Sit him there, will you? ” she directed as Steve dragged Bucky into the room, him barely holding to consciousness. She quickly scattered across the lab, collecting all she could think of that would be needed and placing it on a metal tray.
She stopped mid-step in hesitation, quickly scanning the two people by the bed before making her way closer to where she was needed, taking in a quick breath. She wasn’t sure what to do, how to approach him in a way that wouldn’t frighten him, in a way that wouldn’t make things worse.
She thought of the time when she got the now barely visible scar on her left hand, and how she was scared of the doctor treating her wound back then. What made her feel calmer was the soft voice of the nurse. And so that was what she tried to do.
“Bucky?” she asked quietly, her voice soft and hesitant. His eyes somehow found their way to meet hers, making her breath stuck in her throat as her eyes scanned the icy blue colour of his. Quickening heartbeat hitting her ribcage in an almost painful way. She cleared her throat as she slowly put her hand up in the air, trying to let him know that she meant no harm.
“Bucky, dear, I need you to stay with me, okay?” she whispered as she reached for his hand, silently asking for approval as she kept searching his eyes. He winced, her soft tone confusing him because why on earth was she being so nice when she should hate him for what he did to her? He just nodded his head slightly, some of his hair that wasn’t sticky with blood falling into his eyes. She extended her hand further until her shaky fingers touched his bruised hand. There was something about the contact of their skin that made her heart skip a beat. Taking in another deep breath to try and erase the ringing in her ears, her fingers slowly made their way up his arm as she searched for a vain, leaving behind a trail of invisible sparkles.
“This-” she crooked out after finding a vein and cleared her throat once again, completely missing the slight shudder of his body caused by her soft touch.
“This will help you with your pain” she informed him as she gently stuck the needle into his skin.
“Stevie, as much as I love you being a drama queen and making a dramatic entrance, I need you to go fix the lights. I can’t work in this condition.” she turned her head towards Steve, who was standing beside his friend, ready to give a hand if needed to.
“It wasn’t us who turned them off” Steve informed, shaking his head, eyebrows furrowing as he took his gun in his hand again.
“I’ll go check it out” he stated, placing a reassuring hand on Y/N’s shoulder, for he knew that leaving her alone with his friend wasn’t the best thing. He watched as she swallowed dryly, but nodded her head regardless.
“Be careful,” she said over her shoulder and he nodded silently, sprinted out of the room without making any noise right after. She took in a quick breath to try and steady herself again while studying Bucky’s form with her eyes, searching for injuries. There was something about seeing him like this, all beaten and bruised, that made her feel calmer. And the fear she felt before turned into worry
„What-“ Bucky’s head snapped in her direction, her voice seemingly pulling him out of a deep thought, making her stop mid-sentence. She bit her lip, making his eyes dart across her face.
„What hurts the most? I’m not exactly sure where to start, and I doubt the morphine will last long enough for me to treat all your injuries painlessly. I’m sorry“ she scratched her temple while looking at her feet.
„I’m… I’m not sure.“ he croaked out in a husky voice, furrowing his eyebrows in confusion.
„What do you mean?“ she asked while turning on the EKG machine.
„It’s like the pain is everywhere, yet nowhere. Like when you’ve been feeling it for so long you grow immune to it“ he rasped out, not sure if his words even made sense, his head slightly spinning.
„That would be the morphine…I hope. I wasn’t sure it would work on you. I was kind of scared your body would just burn it without it actually helping you“ she said, more to herself than to him as she looked at him with hesitant eyes. There was something about his eyes that made it hard for her to look away. Like when you see a beautiful sunset after too many rainy days, making your head spin with the long-awaited beauty.
„I need to take your clothes off, is that okay?“ she scratched her forehead, heat spreading across her cheeks. He just nodded, too tired, or perhaps too confused and concussed to be able to react in any other way. She bit the inside of her cheek, her heartbeat quickening again as she moved closer.
After a bit of struggling, soft grunts of pain escaping Bucky’s lips and countless apologies leaving Y/N’s, they somehow managed to take his clothes off, leaving him topless. She was just about to touch his bleeding cheek when the sound of breaking glass filled her ears. She jumped slightly, the loud noise frightening her, as she spun around only to be greeted by a gun pointed at her head.

Hello. I’m not exactly sure how to do this or what to say. I guess only that this is my new writing blog. I haven’t written anything in a long time, so my writing is a little rusty. I apologize for that. But I’m trying to get back to it, so please bear with me. Welcome. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay. Lots of love to anyone who somehow manages to stumble here <3
