It doesn’t surprise James when he wakes up alone. He’s used to it by now. He’s three years divorced and his boyfriend has communication issues. He knows it’s nothing personal. 

Regulus will stay when he’s ready. 

Dragging himself downstairs in the morning is always a chore but he manages it, spurred on by Harry’s little hands pushing at the backs of his legs and Harry's squalling demands for ‘cheery-hoes’ (Remus had almost drowned in his tea the first time he'd called them that). James scoops Harry up before his bare feet can touch the cold tile of the kitchen floor, then plops him down in his seat at the table. It’s the one with all the glow in the dark stickers stuck to it. 

They’re shaped like stars. 

“Hungry?” James asks, just to wind Harry up.

It works and Harry crosses his arms across his chest and pouts until he gets his way.

James turns to the cupboard, utterly smitten, and pauses. A bright pink post-it note is stuck to the door and on it, in Regulus’ ridiculously fancy handwriting, are three heartstopping words.

‘I love you.’ The note says. Then, underneath, ‘Don’t make a big deal out of it.’

just thinking. if james had been with regulus and not lily during the first war... and they didn't have harry. they wouldn't have hide. peter wouldn't have betrayed them, they would be alive, sirius would be free. and everyone would be happy.

Okay but what if James felt Regulus’ death?

It was just a normal evening. Maybe he feels something in him collapse. Standing in the kitchen, making tea. Maybe he looses hold of the mug. It shatters but there’s something in him that doesn’t quite comprehend it. Because suddenly the whole world feels wrong. And he thinks it’s a panic attack. And he wants Regulus there.

Maybe Remus is visiting and rushes in, guides James to the floor. Making sure he doesn’t cut himself on the ceramic shards. Remus tries to ask him what’s wrong, tries to get him to calm down. Nothing helps. James struggles to explain what’s happening.

He can’t breathe. But that’s not quite it either. Really, he feels like he’s drowning.
