On My Playlist #34 “Run” - Snow Patrol (2003) How the video posted in my private account with only 30+ followers in April got 100 views by the end of July is the biggest mystery of the year. I still wonder, but this song popped up lately to remind me of something significant. I didn’t want my Creep cover, which I mentioned last week, to be the last time I sang for us. At least, it wasn’t meant for that. I wish we were still next to each other, but we were physically separate for long by then. We really had to go. I’ve been doing that for 16 weeks now. Rarely any plan is made till I start typing, but I’ve kept some ideas for December since the early days. On My Playlist #32 “Creep” - Radiohead (1992) Soon after I came back in early March, I spent the entire month getting used to my old guitars. A cover of Creep was recorded with my backup Jazzmaster along the way. It’s the only video on my personal YouTube channel that’s been getting constant views for over five months now. I don’t know how the statistics works, but I’ve noticed a majority of them occur during certain hours of the day, which corresponds to the typical working schedule here. It’s perhaps some sort of localization going on, yet I like the idea that some weirdo like me keeps watching it over and over for the pretty tone in the intro. After all... who knows. On My Playlist #31 “Lounge Act” - Nirvana (1991) On my way back to Seattle before my last quarter in Shoreline, ANA made me take the neck off my guitar at the airport to reduce the size. It was the most embarrassing flight I’ve ever been on, but there’s another one that I felt, and still feel, was weirder. The longest trip I’ve ever made to Seattle, which is somehow remembered as the quickest, was on this day five years ago. Departing my hometown at 2pm, I landed at SeaTac for the first time at 2pm on the same day. I’ve had quite a few people asking what made me chose Seattle over NY. A group of college students from my hometown were on the exchange program in Christchurch, New Zealand when the earthquake smashed the building they were in. Only a few survived. Obviously, the song has nothing to do with it. I didn’t even know the band was from there until I googled. I got an order of a Boss PS-3 Pitch Shifter from Christchurch on Monday, which reminded me of what was caught on camera ten years ago. It’s been stuck in my head for the whole week. On a beautiful day of February 2018, my friend and I drove his father to Downtown Seattle. We stopped by a Vietnamese restaurant on our way back to get his favorite sandwich for lunch. While waiting for the sandwich, we were discussing Gibson’s bankruptcy, then got back to his car and put his favorite Jazzmaster record on for the rest of the way. I was revisiting my memories of Central Park in search of connections between his music and my life. What came up first, instead, was the local band’s filmed street show in Central Park. I came across the video on YouTube the other day and went through all of their street performances available online. I felt so nostalgic as those were filmed at the locations that are most familiar to me in the city, and some things for me to remember were already there. About halfway through my commute on a sunny day, the app put on the music I had never heard before. It was stuck in my head for the rest of the day, and I didn’t hate it. That’s pretty much the only positive aspect of streaming, but my app had this weird tendency to play a certain song at a certain location for a few days in a row. It eventually led to NYC. Austin was the only city I travelled to by myself while I was there, and I flew back to JFK via Dallas. Around this time last year, I was at the all-Texas squad gig in Greenpoint. It’s the latest live music I’ve had to this day. I didn’t expect to hear the music before Ringo Deathstarr, but the Russian Big Muff comparison with the bass player was fun. I heard a song I had previously never heard, yet the singer sounded very familiar. It turned out to be a single off the band’s latest album.
