You know, I was really trying to cover every custom figure I made this year, but I suddenly grew… I dunno, self-conscious? I dunno. I love the figures, but some of my pics are straight garbage. This one though? This one was epic! I built my favorite Gundam pilot and shot him with my favorite Gundam in front of Tokyo Tower. How do you top that?!

Domon Kasshu and the Burning Gundam have been my favorites since high school, so making a Heroclix to go with my official Bandai figure from 2003 was a must.

Awakened Byleth, built for @allowmetodemonstrate Valentine’s Day 2023 present to match her Savior King Dimitri from Christmas 2021. If you’ve never played Fire Emblem: Three Houses you’re missing out on an incredible game. I honestly can’t rave enough about FE3H. Hell, if I had an entire year off from work, I would make the academy versions and then time skip versions of every character, that’s how much this game means to Sai and I.

Continuing with the Image Comics starting lineup, here comes Cyberforce’s Velocity! Carin Taylor was the newest member of the mutant team when the series began back in 1992, and she’s endowed with one of my favorite powers, super speed.

Carin was built using a Spider-Girl from the Superior Foes of Spider-Man Heroclix set with just some minor modifications. After sanding off the web-shooters, I added some new bangs and she was ready to go.

Marc Silvestri really had a knack for creating characters I would grow to love between the members of Cyberforce, Witchblade, and The Darkness. You can guarantee I’ll be revisiting his sketchbooks to make more customs.

Ah the 90’s, what a time to be a young comic book fan. And back in 1992, when Image Comics was founded, I was introduced to an entirely new pantheon of heroes and villains. One of my favorites, and one of the most brutal heroes of the time, was ShadowHawk, the spine breaker in an awesome suit of armor. Jim Valentino’s work was unique, even if his artwork was nowhere near as detailed as his constituents, but it didn’t matter. 6-year old Stormie couldn’t get enough of Paul Johnstone and his war on crime.

ShadowHawk was built using a Prowler from the Spider-Man & Venom Absolute Carnage Heroclix set. From there, the work began, sculpting the helmet, chest plate, glove straps, knee and elbow pads, shuriken, line launcher, and belt. Then I just had to find the right place to photograph the antihero, creating what is easily one of my favorite shots of the… jeez, 300 or so customs I’ve built? Even with the 2023 collection complete, the Image Comics set is far from done. This year I built the starting lineup, next year? Who knows what I’ll come up with.

Nearly 30 years ago I was introduced to the uniquely quirky and epic RPG that is EarthBound. As a kid, I wanted to be Ness, when I was teenager, I thought of him as a younger sibling, then when I became an adult, I started thinking of him as my son. Shut up, somewhere in my brain, somehow, it all makes sense.

In 2014, I built my first custom Ness Heroclix, but he was just too tall. This year I finally decided to update my design by taking a Captain America (2011) Phobos, remolding him, then sculpting on all the remaining bits. The hat, shirt, shorts, sneakers, backpack, and baseball bat were all hand sculpted using Greenstuff. And just in time too. Next year, I’ll be starting a 30th anniversary playthrough of my all-time favorite game!

The fourth piece in the 2023 collection is another iconic character and one that it took me 20 years to develop the necessary skill to sculpt. Goku, the legendary Super Saiyan, was a must make for my anime collection and now that he’s here, I’ve been searching for the perfect place to shoot him. Not sure if this knot is quite the perfect place, but I think it looks cool and the angle shows off more his hair and the detail on his gi.

The third piece in the 2023 collection and another major update on an older piece is Geno from Super Mario RPG. When this game first came out in 1996, Geno was an instant hit with 10-year old Stormie as was the overall combat and art style of the game.

Back in 2014 I tried my hand at making the Star Warrior, but I wasn’t quite confident in my sculpting ability yet. Here 9 years later, that’s no longer the case. Geno was entirely hand sculpted and came out beautifully! Now to see about making an updated Mario…
