The rotator cuff is made of 4 muscles which stabilize the glenohumeral joint and assist in maintaining proper glenohumeral joint mechanics with movements, especially overhead and rotating. The Supraspinatus and Infraspinatus muscles are innervated by the Suprascapular nerve (C5/C6), Teres Minor Innervated by the Axillary Nerve (C5/C6) while the Subscapularis is innervated by both the upper and lower Subscapular Nerves (C5/C6). Some references will not include the Interspinales, levatores costarum and intertransversariii muscles as part of the deep back muscles, but I like to include them as they are similar in function and layering. Osteoblasts are mesenchymal cells of bone that secrete osteoid (non-calcified ground substance of bone) which helps form bone tissues. Osteoblasts eventually become trapped in secreted osteoid and as the osteoid calcifies, Osteoblasts change into Osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are mature Osteoblast cells and are multinucleated. Osteoclast remodel bone tissue according to the stresses applied to the tissues (check out Wolf’s Law!). Osteoclasts eventually transition into Osteocytes, which are the cells of bone.
