anticipated releases: april
(note: i have not yet read any of these and cannot speak to their quality- i’m just intrigued by the synopsis or author!)
Indian Burial Ground by Nick Medina - I don't know anything about this book except I LOVED Medina's last book Sisters of the Lost Nation. I love Indigenous horror/mystery.
Magnolia Wu Unfolds it All by Chanel Miller - a middle grade novel about a ten year old sock detective determined to return lonely socks left behind at her parents' laundromat. Written by Chanel Miller, whose Know My Name is one of the best memoirs ever written. So excited to see her explore fiction.
Off With Their Heads by Zoe Hana Mikuta - a sapphic, monster-filled story of betrayal and magic set in Wonderland.
A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall - an epistolary novel set in a magical underwater world.
A Magical Girl Retires by Park Seolyeon, translated by Anton Hur - a depressed millennial woman turns into a magical girl and must fight climate change & credit card debt. TW for suicide mention in the synopsis.

10 books to read || I Could Still Let Myself Down — 10 Books for 2023
of course I’ve got a TBR for the year. I stuck with 10 books because, well, I didn’t even complete all 10 books last year 😵‍💫 here’s hoping I have better luck this year!
only a few of them are on my owned tbr, but I also have got a few anticipated releases that I want to read this year and a few remainders from my 5 star predictions list.

Ten 2023 Anticipated Books
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New year, new books. Here's a mix of ten Asian titles I'm looking forward to. (Of course, release dates/cover art can and do shift.)
JANUARY
Is Love the Answer? by Isaki Uta
Isaki is one of my favorite Japanese artists. Over the last few years more English language publishers have also been taking notice of her work. This is a standalone coming of age comic with an aromatic asexual protagonist. From Kodansha USA.
FEBRUARY
At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender: Life Lessons From a 50 year-old After Two Decades of Self-Discovery by Arai Shou
This is one autobiographical Japanese comic worth mention as there’s little out there in English to compare. Besides digital release first, it will also appear in print later in the year. Also to note the US arm of publisher Tokyopop came back into English language publishing a few years ago. Besides some other endeavors particularly carving itself a niche in LGBTQ+ comics. Which if great, unless you have the long memory like me that also makes it a bit frustrating because of the company's frankly bad history.
JUNE
River's Edge by Okazaki Kyoko
This may be a familiar title because of the live action adaptation. Or Okazaki’s name as a phenome of visceral comics in the 1980s and 90s before an unfortunate car accident sidelined her career. It’s been a bit of a drought too since previous English editions of her work like Helter Skelter or Pink nearly ten years ago. This comic from 1993 has a cast of high schoolers and their screwed up lives.
Until I Love Myself: The Journey of a Nonbinary Manga Artist by Pesuyama Poppy
Another special two volume autobiography in comic form from a Japanese nonbinary artist. From Viz Media.
The Surviving Sky by Krikita H. Rao
An epic lush eco SFF novel featuring solarpunk, yogic philosophy, and a stormy marriage for it’s two 30s-40s aged bi/pan protagonists where civilization is also on the line.
AUGUST
Guardian: Zhen Hun by Priest
Danmei novels appearing in English continue strong. This mysterious Chinese fantasy series around the head of special investigation unit tasked with unusual cases and an enigmatic university professor was the basis for a popular (and persevering under censorship challenges) live-action series in 2018. From Seven Seas.
They Were 11! by Hagio Moto
A classic sci-fi comic from the 1970s with some themes around gender and attraction influenced by the novel The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. I’ve reviewed the previous English edition from back in the 90s. Publisher Denpa is small operation so it’s taken some extra time but a new deluxe edition with the sequel is coming.
TBA
Kitchen of Witch Hat by Hiromi Sato and Shirahama Kamome
The Witch Hat Atelier series is beloved in many languages and garnered awards. This ongoing spin-off comic series is another treat, literally as Qifrey and Olruggio get up to cooking. From Kodansha USA.
Savage Alice by Hwang Jungeun
There’s been big trends for South Korean literature over the last few years. This 2013 novel with drag queen in a Hedwig vein between the big city of Seoul and a smaller hometown will be translated to English by Janet Hong.
Star Clock Liddell by Uchida Yoshimi
Did someone say older philosophical Japanese girls’ comics? Indie publisher Glacier Bay Books has licensed this 1980s haunting three volume comic series.

Anticipated books 2023: second half of the year!
Back in January I did an anticipated books post here – and almost all the ones that i mentioned have now been published. So I’m coming back around for the stuff that’s still to come this year! There is a new Alexis Hall coming in October, the cover is very Boyfriend Material-sque but it’s don’t let that fool you – Ten Things That Never Happened has a new couple and has a fake amnesia plot line……

I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"
Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.
............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

2024 anticipated reads: january
(note: i have not yet read any of these and cannot speak to their quality- i'm just intrigued by the synopsis or author!)
Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire (Jan 9): the ninth book in the Wayward Children series, one of my favorites.
Escaping Mr. Rochester by LL McKinney (Jan 16): a retelling of Jane Eyre, featuring Jane & Bertha attempting to escape Rochester and finding a possible romance in one another??
Voyage of the Damned by Francis White (Jan 18): a unique take on a locked room murder mystery- in a fantasy world, twelve heirs with magical abilities take a 12 day sea voyage to celebrate their kingdoms' peace when one of them is murdered.
Midnight on Beacon Street by Emily Ruth Verona (Jan 30): in October 1993, babysitter Mira is watching her two charges when the night takes a terrifying turn.

the aeneid as a post-apocalyptic poem, yes sure, the fall of troy is the end of a world, but what about the aeneid as a pre-apocalyptic poem???? vergil does all this ideological work setting up augustus as the telos toward which the entire arc of history bends and you can argue how he really feels about that but regardless, doesn't it mean that augustus is the end? that there is nothing beyond him, nothing after him? vergil poises himself as writing at the top of the world and there's nowhere else to go from there when that moment passes
