Sir Kaeya,

This latest event in Sumeru has been most thrilling. The fungal organisms which were once was thought to be a mere byproduct created by the disease plaguing Irminsul have largely been misunderstood. The latest competitions being hosted by the revitalized Akademiya allow me a chance to more closely interact with these organisms and study them in person. Not only will this largely contribute new information to my own studies, but it will also give me a chance to interact with other scholars who are doing similar research…

GOOD QUESTION. i used to think i'll join Haravatat because i think it's the closest to what i'm currently studying? but if Haravatat is really just all about linguistics and deicphering ancient runes (+ learning languages), i probaly might not survive. (i took basic chinese, never got an A for my essays or english, etc...)

i was thinking of Vahumana because of its social science aspect but i don't really like history or research (i only like reading articles) so... i guess i'll stick with Haravatat :_)

Hi Seanan! Absolutely loved both Sleep No More and The Innocent Sleep. I’m so glad we got to see things from both Toby and Tybalt’s perspectives, thank you for writing a whole second book. ❤️

I have a question about a small detail I noticed in TIS. Tybalt describes Toby’s jacket as black, but in ALH when she first gets the jacket it’s brown. Has it darkened over time, or was this a mistake that got past editing? Mostly I just want to know what color I should be picturing the jacket. Thank you in advance!

The jacket was described as brown originally, but has always been black on the covers, and so has gradually darkened in the text, because I can't picture the brown jacket anymore.

Marlin is best known for their star trek fancomic "Love Letter to Fandom". They go by their online handle, marlinspirkhall, or Marlin Halls. They have previously been published in This Simple Feeling Zine edition 6 (2021), and ran the 2021 “Uhura Bang” event, for fanworks focused on Nyota Uhura.

For the Terms Of Service Zine, Marlin has collaborated on a 10 page spirk comic titled “Nocturnal” with Alhe “Sweet-Bolillito”, and will also be writing a Spock/Kirk/Sulu hanahaki fic.

Translating Layla’s Manuscript Animation!

It’s been literal MONTHS since I last posted anything on this site but I’ve been playing Genshin more, got Layla, and once I figured out that there was a legitimate writing system for Sumeru, I wanted to translate what she wrote down in her idle! (NOTE: I don’t know how to speak or read any of these languages so if anyone who does know how would like to assist in translation errors, please help!)

According to the Genshin fandom wiki, the writing script of Sumeru (seen above) appears to take inspiration from Teyvat’s main writing system (mainly seen in Mondstadt) and the irl writing script of Devanagari! That style doesn’t contain any sort of punctuation so it made the transition a bit harder. As for Layla’s idle, her scroll/manuscript thing appears as

and after doing a rough translation, I received;

“Alh abakat alsamawiya wajawami ilmal nujum”

I used google translate to do translations as I don’t know any other space that does translate, but I got a variety of languages depending on what I wrote in the translation box: Sundanese, Arabic, Swahili, etc.

Now, to break down everything!

The most comprehensible language for translating “alh abakat” was Arabic to which it read:

morbid, but out of everything, this is the one that made the most sense.

Now for “alsamawiya!” Thought this one was supposed to say “Akademiya” at first bc yk Sumeru Akademiya, but once I put it in using Arabic once again it gave the response of

Considering how the last translation spoke of gods, this makes sense!

As for “wajawami,” that one was strange. This time the first result was in Swahili, meaning “the saviors.” Still following the god/heavenly theme at least

And now for “ilmal nujum!” The first word that appeared as I wrote it in was “astrology” and Google translate said that it was Sundanese. The fact that it was “astrology” makes perfect sense in this case for Layla, as that’s what she studies, but I did some digging of my own to confirm this.

I found this very useful site (https://jothishi.com/ilm-al-nujum-islamic-astrology/) explaining in large detail that astrology and astronomy had many roots and connections to Islam, and how “ilm-al-nujum” is roughly translated to mean “the science of the stars!” From other sites and translations, it‘s a term meaning “the study of both disciplines.” This site (https://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/students/97to98/exhibits/pg_astro.htm) states that;

“The Qu'ran suggests that there are signs in nature for man to read, and in the history of Islam the study of astronomy and astrology were at one time regarded as having a higher spiritual purpose in thinking about the universe.”

Astrological predictors and predictions (aka exactly what Layla studies and does) were held to such a high degree due to their connections with the celestial bodies and the heavens! All of this lines up perfectly with the past translations!

As for what it all says and how Layla wrote it practically asleep, it’s unclear. But it has to do with the heavenly gods and her line of study involving astrology and the heavens! This was all practically for fun on my part as Layla’s becoming a new favorite character for me, but I think it’s just really cool how they put all of this into just her idle animation! If this has any deeper meaning, help’s appreciated, and I haven’t seen any other people trying to translate this!

You know I want Leo x Jurand

Sorry for taking ages to reply to this one but I was saving it for a rainy day 😅

I'd die for them: It's a terrible hill to die on, but by Jove I will, in part because I just think they're neat but also because I want to defend this ship against the avid Leo haters, especially ones who treat his sexuality as an arbitrary part of his character.

Aesthetically, it's GREAT: I headcanon Jurand as Leo's black-haired, twinksome opposite. They are both canonically attractive - though depending on your opinion of the reliability of Leo & Savine's POV, perhaps Jurand isn't quite as delicate and beautiful as Leo thinks. Even so I also really love the thought that Leo's love for him makes Jurand appear physically more attractive to him as well. That's ridiculously cute.

The impact/their story is more interesting than the ship itself: I have two fairly big gripes with the ship: 1) no canon kiss, 2) jurand doesn't have enough of a character separate from Leo IMO. So in that regard, I think the ship itself is a secondary thing compared to Leo's themes as a whole. I love that a main POV in the First Law is queer, I love that it's a problematic ship but also a critique of heteronormativity, I love the drama of it all and how dangerous they are as a couple, I love the trope of brothers in arms but made explicitly gay.

i love them!: It's just what happens when your favourite author writes the kind of character/story you've been craving for years. I got into Hornblower in 2017/'18, which was when I really started falling in love with war stories featuring repressed gay men. But the fact is there are lamentably few war stories where the characters are canonically gay. ALH came out in 2019, so I was absolutely primed to enjoy Leo's story, and I especially love the way it kinda combines modern day queer romcom style scenes with Joe's usual grimdarkness and brutal characterisation. It's just the perfect combination.

*slaps roof* this ship can fit so much projection in it: Something I find myself coming back to is how seemingly unconditional Jurand's love for Leo is. Despite everything, no matter how battered and bruised Leo gets both mentally and physically, no matter how much Leo tries to push him away, no matter how dark things get, Jurand continues to love Leo regardless, despite himself. That's what I find so weirdly comforting about this ship, especially as Leo spirals into depression near the end, there's a sense that Jurand will always see the best in him even when Leo thinks he's friendless and deeply alone.

Would/do write fic about it: I wish there was more fic. I would die to read more of Leo finding himself in a queer romcom amidst all the political backstabbing and world domination. I want to see Jurand go into full seduction mode.

I'm sending them to superhell: I mean, no matter how much I love them I can't deny that they're bigoted fascist dictators who murdered some of the best characters in the series. Also them choosing to walk away from preventing sexual assault is one of the most harrowing scenes in the trilogy, I absolutely hate them for it and kinda wish Joe hadn't included it because I didn't think that scene added enough to justify itself. I'm still very conflicted about it.

They make me unwell (aka I'm gone for them): It's unreasonable how much I think about them. I'm sure I annoy other people with the way I constantly go on about them whenever I get the chance - I certainly annoy myself with how obsessed I am about them. But because there's very few people who share my view of Leo, I find it hard to vent my feelings.

I really need this to be canon: I'm really happy with everything we did get, and it definitely is canon, but I will remain forever bitter that we didn't get a canon gay kiss from Leo's POV. If we get one eventually from Jurand's, it might not be so bad, but considering how Leo is still coming to terms with his sexuality I really, really want to see his reaction. Even more bitter for the fact we got so much heterosexual sex, even for couples that weren't as interesting, while Joe squandered all the Leo/Jurand buildup only to leave it feeling lacklustre at the end IMO.

I'm conflicted about it: It's hard not to be conflicted when Leo is involved. I absolutely love the ship, I love what we got, but I think there could be so much more. I wish Jurand was given more agency, and I definitely want that kiss. I would have liked to see more fallout from Sipani. I want to know more about Jurand & Glaward's relationship. It is an incredible ship, I truly believe Leo is one of the best fantasy characters ever, but there is still so much that could've been explored.
