on Coil's ANS (2004)
from “Out of Time, Out of Place, Out of Spite”: Light and Music of Coil and Skryabin by me
The ANS is believed to be one of the first electronic synthesizers in history. It was created in 1957 by a Moscow State University engineer Yevgeny Murzin. The optic disc of the machine contained 144 sounds that came to simultaneous resonance, producing spectral sounds rather than sound waves.[1] Among the composers who worked with the instrument are Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Eduard Artemyev, a Russian composer famous for his extensive collaboration with Tarkovsky.[2] The son of Eduard Artemyev, Artemiy, describes the machine in a letter: “Please, try to imagine a score sounding by itself without a conductor, [without an] orchestra [and] even without musical instruments. This magic is possible by using [the] musical synthesizer ANS. The ANS is an instrument with which a composer cannot only create but even draw his music without notes and orchestra.”[3] The process of music creation here is described as writing with light in a miraculous process of drawing the music rather than playing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Coil’s box set ANS, which was first published in September 2004 by Threshold House, is made entirely on the ANS machine. They were accompanied with limited edition prints that allow us to glimpse into the way visual “scores” that were fed into the ANS looked like. The sounds we hear on the box set are not necessarily composed, as they do not follow any particular musical pattern — only a visual pattern of a graphic card that went into the synthesizer. In this way, music on ANS is spectral in how the music is generated, as it does not necessitate the presence of a composer — by itself, it can translate figments of images into musical phantoms.

Uncovered: 75 Dollar Bill - Power Failures
Tumblr media
The shortlisted album artworks have been announced for our annual art prize Best Art Vinyl 2023. We now begin to delve into the creative process behind some of the 50 nominees. First up is 75 Dollar Bill's re-release of Power Failures for the first time on vinyl. We were lucky enough to catch up with the band's guitarist and album cover designer Che Chen.
Che Chen founded 75 Dollar Bill in 2011 with percussionist Rick Brown. He tells us, "I wanted to be a painter before I wanted to be a musician, so the visual aesthetic of the band has always been really important to me. I've done the artwork for all of our physical and digital releases, and many of our posters and fliers too."
Tumblr media

Che Chen explains, "Power Failures first came out as a digital release on Bandcamp in July of 2020. It was our first pandemic summer, Trump was still president (hopefully for the last time!) and George Floyd had been murdered by Minneapolis Police Officers earlier that summer. There were protests everywhere, against police violence, institutional racism, wage inequality for essential workers, etc. The title of the record was very much a response to all of this, the way the pandemic exposed the failures of the state on all these different fronts."
The use of text-based artwork has in fact been a consistent theme for the artist, he told us, "Text has always been central to the visual language of the band, and many of our record covers feature text as the only "image" in the designs. This approach made sense to me for Power Failures, since the title was very evocative of everything that was going on, but also open-ended enough that I didn't want to add an image that might get in the way of whatever associations someone looking at those words might have. I wanted to push the idea of a text only image a bit by using the typography to create a pattern (of W's in this case) which is only broken by the album title. The digital album just had the single square image as its artwork, so when Karl Records in Berlin offered to make a vinyl edition of the album as a gatefold double album, we got to expand the art significantly. I repeated this process on the back cover with the band name and changed the background colour. The  LP centre labels refer back to the font and colour schemes of the front and back cover. I should also mention that the beautiful inside layout was done by Roland Küffner at Karl who did a fantastic job."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We asked Che Chen about the techniques he uses for his artworks, he explained, "The fonts I've used in most of my designs are actually from industrial moveable rubber stamp type. I've scanned physical prints of each set, several versions so that there are multiple versions of each character with slightly different imperfections, etc. I like the physical character of these fonts, how each impression is unique. For our first LP, Wooden Bag, Rick and I actually hand stamped the covers for the entire first edition using this rubber stamp type, but these days I mostly do the type setting on the computer."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chen Chen got into music as a teenager in the suburbs of Washington DC in the 1990s when the post-hardcore scene around Dischord Records was thriving. The DIY ethos of bands taking control of their own production, from running their own labels and booking their own tours, to playing protests and benefits for local causes and working the door at their own shows, was and is still a big inspiration to him.
He tells us, "I've tried to carry those ideals on in my own work as best I can. Doing the art and the design for music projects I am involved with (and occasionally for friends) feels like an obvious extension of this. I love bands and labels that have a strong visual aesthetic and also really respect when artists are resourceful and can make striking designs using sometimes limited means. Sun Ra's home made jackets covers for his Saturn Records LPs and Harry Partch's Gate 5 Records are both examples of this for me."

Che continues, "Lisa Alvarado’s screen printed album covers for the Natural Information Society records and her paintings that hang while they play (she plays harmonium in the group too) are another perfect fusion of visual and musical aesthetics to me."

First, the DSM lacks an implicit definition of mental health or emotional wellness. Psychoanalytic clinical experience, in contrast, assumes that beyond helping patients to change problematic behaviors and mental states, therapists try to help them to accept themselves with their limitations and to improve their overall resiliency, sense of agency, tolerance of a wide range of thoughts and affects, self-continuity, realistic self-esteem, capacity for intimacy, moral sensibilities, and awareness of others as having separate subjectivities. Because people who lack these capacities can not yet imagine them, such patients rarely complain about their absence; they just want to feel better. They may come for treatment complaining of a specific Axis 1 disorder, but their problems may go far beyond those symptoms.
Second, despite the fact that a sincere effort to increase validity and reliability inspired those: editions, the validity and reliability of the post-1980 DSMs have been disappointing (see Herzig & Licht, 2006). The attempt to redefine psychopathology in ways that facilitate some kinds of research has inadvertently produced descriptions of clinical syndromes that are artificially discrete and fail to capture patients' complex experiences. While the effort to expunge the psychoanalytic bias that pervaded DSM-II is understandable now that other powerful ways to conceptualize psychopathology exist, the deemphasis on the client's subjective experience of symptoms has produced a flat, experience-distant version of mental suffering that represents clinical phenomena about as well as the description of the key, tempo, and length of a musical composition represents the music itself. This critique applies especially to the personality disorders section of the DSM, but it also applies to its treatment of experiences such as anxiety and depression, the diagnosis of which involves externally observable phenomena such as racing heart beat or changes in eating and sleeping patterns rather than whether the anxiety is about separation or annihilation, or the depression is anaclitic or introjective (Blatt, 2004) aspects that are critical to clinical understanding and help.
Third, although the DSM system is often called a "medical model" of psychopathology, no physician would equate the remission of symptoms with the cure of disease. The reification of "disorder" categories, in defiance of much clinical experience, has had significant unintended negative consequences. The assumption that psychological problems are best viewed as discrete symptom syndromes has encouraged insurance firms and governments to specify the lowest common denominator of change and insist that this is all they will cover, even when it is clear that the presenting complaints are the tip of an emotional iceberg that will cause trouble in the future if ignored. The categorical approach has also benefited pharmaceutical companies, who have an interest in an ever-increasing list of discrete "disorders" for which they can market specific drugs.

Todd White: Unveiling the Human Spirit through Art
Enter the world of Todd White, an artist whose distinctive style and down-to-earth personality have earned him an international reputation that continues to flourish. Born in 1969 in Texas, Todd White's artistic journey began in humble roots and led him through a remarkable career in the animation industry before he emerged as a renowned artist with a unique perspective on the human experience. In this blog, we'll explore the extraordinary path of Todd White, an artist whose work captivates and delights, revealing the profound stories that lie beneath the surface.
From Humble Beginnings to Hollywood
Todd White's life story is one of resilience and creativity. Raised in modest circumstances, he embarked on a journey that took him from his Texan hometown to the bustling heart of Hollywood. In his twenties, he found himself working in the animation field, contributing to character development at some of the country's most renowned production studios. Notably, he was part of the lead team behind the international sensation, SpongeBob SquarePants.
Distinctive Style
During his time in Hollywood, Todd White began to carve out his unique artistic style. He delved into experimentation with both style and concept, a journey that ultimately led him to his current artistic method. His approach to each piece is methodical, beginning with the naming of the work. He then visualizes the faces and personalities, and as a storyteller, he develops each person's narrative. He doesn't start painting until he can fully conceptualize the story within his mind, and his work always conveys the essence of that story directly—no extraneous details make their way to the canvas.
The Power of Hands
Hands play a significant role in Todd White's work. He has a deep appreciation for the expressive power of even the smallest hand gestures, recognizing their ability to amplify an actor's performance. In his words, "Everyone's hands are full of personality," and they reflect a subject's state of mind almost as vividly as facial expressions. Todd's observant eye for detail extends to his people-watching habits, where he constantly observes figures, faces, and features. He even records ideas for his next work on napkins and tablecloths in various situations.
Revealing Inner Feelings
Todd White's paintings have an enchanting quality that often evokes laughter and invites viewers to return for repeated viewings. By uncovering his subjects' deepest feelings, he creates scenes that convey timeless attraction and intimacy. His characters, though adorned with exaggerated features and textured skin, reveal truths—both their own and ours. Todd's subjects may come from the everyday world, but his unique perspective transforms our perception of people and the roles we play in each other's lives. He delves into the nuances of body language to capture the subtleties of what individuals reveal and conceal.
International Recognition and Prestige
Todd White's artistic brilliance has not gone unnoticed. In 2007, he was chosen as the Official Artist of the GRAMMY® Awards, an event that stands as the world's most prestigious in the realm of music. In 2009, Todd was invited by Warner Bros. to contribute to a major design exhibition commemorating the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.
His collaboration with Coca-Cola in 2010 resulted in limited edition bottles and cans, featuring his unique box signature—an unprecedented acknowledgement of a fine artist by Coca-Cola. In 2011, Todd White was honored with the Diana Princess of Wales Gold Medal, one of the United Kingdom's most prestigious accolades. He received this award after generously donating his portrait of the Princess to the Diana Awards charity. With only 11 recipients to date, Todd stands as the only American to be honored with this prestigious accolade.
Following a series of record-breaking shows in the UK, Todd White returned to the United States to even greater acclaim. Today, he stands as one of the world's most collectible and successful living artists, a testament to his unwavering dedication to revealing the human spirit through his exceptional artistry. Their new album, and first for Frontiers, “Universe” was produced by Mike Plotnikoff (Halestorm, Three Days Grace) and mixed by Jacob Hansen (Amaranthe, Volbeat, Pretty Maids). “Universe” brings together a symphonic and classic metal approach with more contemporary sounds like industrial and electronic influences. "With this album, we set out to create something that would transport you to another world, music that transcends time and space and takes you on an epic ride through our 'Universe'! The songs are about shattering your fears, testing your limits, and going after your passions at the speed of light, holding on to our humanity and supporting one another as we enter our insane digital future together. Musically, the songs hit you with a cosmic wall of sound, supersonic energy with massive industrial and symphonic textures. Davinci resolve lite vs magic bullet de npoiser
Tumblr media
#DAVINCI RESOLVE LITE VS MAGIC BULLET DE NPOISER SOFTWARE#
#DAVINCI RESOLVE LITE VS MAGIC BULLET DE NPOISER PROFESSIONAL#
However, next time you’re browsing a plugin store, keep an eye out for the OFX symbol in the compatibility key, as that will suggest that it’s more than likely compatible with Resolve. Resolve is extremely powerful, and as I said in the introduction, it’s common to think it is an isolated application that doesn’t accommodate third-party plugins. Still, though - Resolve does have its limits. However, with the addition of the Fusion page (and with the inclusion of new and updated built-in effects like Resolve’s Face Refinement), Resolve now offers a variety of VFX avenues to explore without the addition of third-party plugins. Two years back, Sapphire would have been a no-brainer for those who wanted to work only in Resolve but also wanted VFX options. Like many of the other plugins on this list, many of Sapphire’s tools open in their own user interfaces, which you may find either beneficial or annoying. When you think about After Effects plugins like Optical Flares, and how powerful they are, Sapphire takes that intensity and crushes it. The suite (and other tools from its developer, BorisFX), see use in Hollywood feature films and your favorite artist’s music video. Sapphire is a $1,695 VFX suite, or a $495 annual subscription. It is a visual effects suite that you can use to create everything from photorealistic lighting to stylized looks. Let’s get the price point out of the way first. an Adobe product with fewer of these available presets. However, since Resolve is free, you can weigh the benefits of using Resolve and Red Giant Universe vs.
#DAVINCI RESOLVE LITE VS MAGIC BULLET DE NPOISER SOFTWARE#
I’m not a fan of subscription-based software neither am I a fan of subscription-based plugins. The only catch is that it’s subscription-based at $30 monthly - or $199 annually. The software costs $199, but it is a worthy investment for filmmakers of all levels. If you’ve yet to use FilmConvert with Resolve because you think it’s redundant, stay tuned for a tutorial on FilmConvert in Resolve in the coming weeks.įrom sci-fi text to camera shake transitions, the Red Giant Universe plugin has everything for the startup creator. It can look ok, but it is not a film stock emulation.įilmConvert continuously updates the available camera profiles to make sure that the curve it’s applying is specific to your camera’s base data. Film look plugins can’t tell which camera you shot your footage on, and so just apply a contrast curve and change the color. We can control how the color is decoded and make sure that each color is transformed to the correct film stock equivalent. Although, as co-founder Nigel Stanford states, there’s a little bit more to the plugin than other “film look” assets: The plugin, or standalone application, uses archival scans and algorithmic data to change the curve and color properties to make your footage appear like you shot it on one of many different types of film stock. So, let’s have a look at a few plugins that can take Resolve to the next level.įilmConvert, by Rubber Monkey, launched back in 2011 as a tool for emulating film stock. However, there may be a time where you need that extra bit of spice. However, one element that often gets missed is that Resolve can also accommodate plugins just like Premiere and After Effects. We often think of Resolve as a one-and-done application since it offers next to everything one might need to create a film. Color-grading software, editing software, audio mixing platform, or compositor? That’s for you to decide.
#DAVINCI RESOLVE LITE VS MAGIC BULLET DE NPOISER PROFESSIONAL#
Many know Resolve as a professional color grading platform some know Resolve as a free non-linear editor and (since the release of v.14 & 15), we’ve also seen the introduction of dedicated audio and VFX pages with Fairlight and Fusion. It would be fair to say that Resolve has something of an identity problem. These plugins may be just what you’re looking for. So you’re interested in working in Resolve, but you need a few more options.

iPod Commercials Defined an Era for Music in Marketing: The 10 Most Iconic Ads
An Overlooked Tracks News Finding: Here’s an article you might have overlooked. Having a partnership with NewsAPI, we try to catch music entertainment news for you to view, read and possibly enjoy. We will continue to find what’s available in the world of music entertainment, concert information and music releases. But obviously you – the listener and reader are the biggest source for news in your area, so if you can share with us. For right now, look at what we found for you:
“From The Billboard Music Website – iPod Commercials Defined an Era for Music in Marketing: The 10 Most Iconic Ads”
It’s difficult to overstate how deeply and completely the iPod revolutionized music listening. Introduced in 2001, the pocket-sized device escorted music consumers out of the CD era and into the gleaming digital age. (“I don’t know who your product’s designers are,” Moby said in a 2001 promotional video from Apple, “but boy, you’re not paying them enough.”)
Of course, iPod commercials quickly became as iconic as the products they sold. Launched in 2003, the classic iPod ad campaign featured silhouettes of people dancing like mad in front of brightly colored backgrounds, with the iPod and its headphones in stark white contrast. These clips are deeply embedded in the memories of most anyone who watched television in the 2000s.
With each commercial featuring a single song, the campaign was also a powerful tool for launching music by both indie and superstar artists. Songs used in iPod commercials during the device’s heyday got a massive boost in visibility and sales, with Steve Jobs himself often hand-picking and giving final approval on songs used in some of Apple’s best-known ads.
“In using a most discriminated and discerning ear and aligning great and significant music with rich imagery and simple messaging, Apple has taken what jingles had done in the past and created a new and masterful neojingle, which instead of literally singing about the product becomes inextricably connected to sound,” Josh Rabinowitz, senior vp/director of music for ad agency Grey Worldwide, told Billboard of iPod ad syncs in 2011. “It feels not as if they borrowed or even stole the music, but that the music belonged to the Apple brand.”
Indeed, for those of us who were there when these ads launched, the songs below are forever linked with those silhouettes shimmying and sashaying to music that spanned genres, but all had cutting edge appeal, even when the track being used was years old. After Apple’s announcement Tuesday (May 10) that it would be discontinuing the iPod Touch — the only remaining model of the portable MP3 players — after more than 20 years of the product that changed it all, these are the 10 iPod commercial music synchs that really stick with us.

Unos, dos, tres, catorce! In a splashy 2004 cross-promotion, U2 launched its new song “Vertigo” in an iPod ad to promote the band’s new album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. This sync marked one of the few iPod ads that featured silhouettes of the actual band playing the song. (A limited edition U2 iPod would also land in 2006.)

While the 2002 track “Jerk It Out” from Swedish rock act Caesars was also used in international ads for Coca Cola, Nivea and the Bulgarian phone company Mobitel, it was its placement in a 2005 commercial for the first iPod Shuffle that gave the song global recognition, a major boost in digital sales and placement in the 2000s pop culture canon.

Daft Punk was already a Very Big Deal in 2005. But the French duo’s iPod ad featuring “Technologic” (from their 2005 LP Human After All) thrust the robots further into mainstream consciousness via the commercial featuring silhouetted dancers doing, naturally, the robot.

While Gorillaz had already appeared on the Hot 100 with their 2001 hit “Clint Eastwood,” it was this iPod ad — featuring, in a stroke of genius, dancers on rollerskates! — that helped propel the UK act into the big time, with the song ultimately hitting No. 14 on the Hot 100 in August 2005.

How 9/11 Became Fan Fiction Canon
Every fictional character you can think of has experienced 9/11 in fanfiction.
A Clone Wars veteran with two lightsabers is on United Airlines Flight 93 and prevents it from crashing. Ron and Hermione get caught up in the chaos as the towers fall. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her friends watch the attacks unfold on TV from Sunnydale. We have spent 20 years trying to process what happened on 9/11 and its fallout, and that messy process can be tracked through the countless, sad, disturbing, and sometimes very funny fanfiction left across the internet.
Many of the fanfics written in the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks seemed to directly respond to the news as it happened, processing the tragedy in real-time through the eyes of characters they loved. In the absence of a canon episode where Daria Morgendorffer paid respects to those lost, writing fanfic about these characters also experiencing trauma helped fans cope.
One YuGiOh fanfic published on fanfiction.net in May 2002 could have been ripped exactly from what this writer experienced that Tuesday morning. “It started as a normal day,” user Gijinka Renamon wrote. Yugi and his friends were in school, where their teacher informed them of the attacks and sent everyone home from school.
“After reading people’s 9/11 fics, I decided to write my own, and put a certain character in it. And Yugi and his pals were my first choice,” the author's note reads, explaining the connection they felt to United flight 93 and the World Trade Center attacks. Given that they lived in Pennsylvania, and “it’s close to New York, I felt really sad about it.”
Stitch, a fandom journalist for Teen Vogue, told Motherboard that this reaction to 9/11 is not at all uncommon in fandom.
"Fandom has always been a place that positions nothing as 'off limits,'" she said. "Historical tragedies like the Titanic sinking and atrocities like… all of World War 2 show up regularly across the past 30 years of people creating stories and art about the characters they love. So, on some level, it makes sense that 9/11 and the following 20-year military installation in the Middle East has joined the ranks of things people in different fandoms turn into settings for their fan fiction."
Reactions depicted in a handful of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfics published in the weeks after the attacks ring a little truer to the characters. “Tuesday, 11th September 2001,” written by Anna K, almost echoes the lyrics from “I’ve Got a Theory,” one of the songs in the musical episode that aired in November 2001. “We have seen the apocalypse. We have prevented it. Actually, we’ve prevented quite a few. So we know what they look like,” they write, before taking a darker turn. “They look a lot like…New York today.”
Killing demons and vampires doesn’t phase the Scooby Gang, but when preventable human death is brought into the picture, it’s gut wrenching.
“What am I supposed to do…When I can’t do anything to save the world?” Buffy cries  into Spike’s chest, watching the attacks unfold on TV in a fanfic the author described as being “about feeling numb and helpless.”
In “Blood Drive,” Kirayoshi writes about Buffy and her friends saving a van full of donated blood meant for victims of the attacks from a group of thirsty vampires. One Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic even takes a blindly patriotic turn, where noted lesbian witch Tara McClay helps Xander hang an American flag from the window of the magic shop to make Anya feel better.
Experiencing 9/11 as a young teenager was overwhelming not just because of the loss of life. Almost immediately after the event itself, it was as if the entirety of American culture re-oriented itself towards an overtly jingoistic stance. As we get distance from the attacks, seeing the tone of television and movies from the early 2000s is jarring, and some have gone viral on Twitter. In the world of pop music, mainstream musicians like the Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, were blacklisted from the radio while Toby Keith sang about putting a boot up the ass of terrorists. On the Disney Channel, a young Shia Labeouf reading a poem he supposedly wrote about the events. The poem concludes with the line, "it's awesome to be an American citizen."
In a world so completely saturated with this messaging, it is not surprising that fanfic authors started including 9/11 in their work so soon after the event. Even The West Wing had a strange, out of continuity, fanfic-esque episode where the characters reacted to 9/11. In some cases, it made sense that the characters in the stories would be close to or a part of the events themselves.
"For characters like John Watson or Captain America, the idea works to an extent," Stitch told Motherboard. "In the original Sherlock Holmes works and the 2011 BBC series, Watson had just returned from Afghanistan. For Captain America and other Marvel heroes, 9/11 was something that was addressed in-universe in The Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 #36. Technically, 9/11 is 'canon' to the Marvel universe."
In “Early Warning: Terrorism,” a fanfiction for the TV show Early Edition in which a man who mysteriously receives tomorrow's newspaper, predicting the future, avoids jingoism, but tries to precent 9/11 from happening. This fanfic remains unfinished; it’s unclear if the characters successfully prevent 9/11 in this retelling.
Largely in fanfic from the era just after 9/11, when many young authors were trying to emotionally grapple with it, the characters don't re-write or undo the events themselves. It's this emphasis on the reaction to tragedy that colors the fanfiction that features 9/11 going forward.
Although fanfiction authors have been writing about 9/11 consistently since soon after the event, whenever that fanfiction reaches outside of its intended audience, it looks bizarre.
A screenshot of a Naruto 9/11 fanfic on the Tumblr subreddit comes without any context, or even more than two lines and an author's note. It’s impossible to suss out if this falls into the category of sincere fanfic without the rest of the piece or a publication date, but modern-day commenters on the Reddit thread see it as classic Tumblr trash.
Tumblr media
Screenshot from r/Tumblr
“Bin Laden/Dick Cheney, enemies to lovers, 10k words, slow burn,” one user joked in the replies, underscoring the weirdness of Naruto being in the Twin Towers by comparing it to a What If story about Cheney and Bin Laden slowly falling deeply in love.
It’s hard to tell how much of the 9/11 fanfic and fanart starting a few years after the attacks is sincere, and how much of it is ironic, and trying to make fun of the very concept of writing fanfiction about 9/11.
A 2007 anime music video (in which various clips, usually from anime, are cut together to music) that combines scenes from The Lion King with Linkin Park’s “Crawling” and clips from George Bush’s speeches immediately after the attacks feels like the perfect example of this. Even the commenters can’t seem to suss out if this person is a troll or not.
There’s no way that My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic 9/11 fanart could be serious, right? Especially if the description pays tribute to “some of the nation's most memorable buildings,” and features five of the main characters as child versions of themselves. The comments again are split between users thanking the artist for a thoughtful remembrance post, and people making their own headcanon for why Twilight Sparkle is surreptitiously absent from the scene.

There’s Phineas and Ferb fanfic that combines a 9/11 tribute concert with flashbacks to Ferb being rescued from the towers as a baby, written on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. It jumps from introspection to lines like, “‘Quiet Perry the Platypus. I’m trying to listen to these kids singing a 9/11 tribute.’”
The author's notes make it more likely that they meant for this to be a tribute piece, but it doesn’t quite make sense until watching a YouTube dramatic reading of it from 2020, fully embracing the absurdity of it all.
“For me, 9/11 is synonymous with war. It completely changed the course of my life," Dreadnought, the author of a Captain America fanfic Baghdad Waltz that sees Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes fall in love over the course of the war on terror, told Motherboard. "It’s the reason I joined the military, and I developed deep connections with people who would go on to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. These very much felt like my generation’s wars, perhaps because people I graduated high school with were the youngest folks eligible to serve at the time.”
Dreadnought told Motherboard that although they didn't deploy, their career has kept 9/11 and the trauma from it in their mind. After seeing that people who fantasize about Steve and Bucky getting together seemed particularly interested in reading fanfiction that related to 9/11, they decided to try their hand at it.
"I had to do something with all of that emotionally, and I’m admittedly a bit emotionally avoidant. So I learned through fic that it’s easier for me to process those feelings and the knowledge of all the awful stuff that can happen in war if I can turn it into something creative," Dreadnought said. "Give the feelings to fake people and then have those fake people give the feelings to readers!"
To Dreadnought, who is a queer man, the experience of researching and writing this was more cathartic than they first expected, especially as a way to navigate feelings about masculinity, military culture, and queer identity. But they said the research they did, which included watching footage of first responders at ground zero, was what helped them finally process the event itself.
"It was like a delayed horror, and it was more powerful than I expected it would be." Dreadnought said. "When I was eighteen, I was pretty emotionally divorced from 9/11; I just knew I wanted to do something about it. So coming back to it in my 30s while writing this fic, it was a very different experience. Even the research for this story ended up being an extraordinarily valuable exercise in cognitively and emotionally processing 9/11 and all of its second and third order effects."
Fanfiction that features 9/11 provides an outlet for people who still grapple with the trauma from that day. But Stitch warns that the dynamics of fandom and how it relates to politics can also create fiction that's less respectful and more grotesque.
"With years of distance between the stories written and the original events of 9/11, there seems to be some sort of cushion for fans who choose to use those events as a catalyst for relationships—and Iraq and Afghanistan for settings," Stitch said. "The cushion allows them room to fictionalize real world events that changed the shape of the world as we know it, but it also insulates them from having to think about what they may be putting into the world."
The tendency of turning these events into settings or backgrounds for mostly white, male characters to fall in love has the unintended effect of displacing the effects that the war on terror has had on the world over. Steve and Bucky might fall in love during the war on terror, but they would also be acting as a part of the American military in a war that has been criticized since it started. Fanfic writers in other fandoms have come under fire for using real world tragedy as settings for fic before. In the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake Supernatural fanfiction about the actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki going to the island to do aid became controversial within the fandom. There have also been fics where characters grapple with the death of George Floyd that is written in a way that displaces the event from the broader cultural context of race in America.
"A Captain America story where Steve Rogers is a 'regular' man who joins the US Army and 'fights for our freedom' post-9/11 is unlikely to deal with the war’s effect on locals who are subject to US military intervention," Stitch said. "It’s unlikely to sit with what Captain America has always meant and what a writer is doing by dropping Steve Rogers into a then-ongoing conflict in any capacity."
After enough time, “never forget” can even morph into “but what if it never happened?” A 19k+ word Star Wars alternate universe fanfic asks this question, wondering what would have unfolded if someone with two lightsabers was on United Flight 93. This fic, part of a larger fanfic series with its own Wikia, considers what would have happened if Earth was a military front in the Clone Wars.
In this version of events, a decorated general who served in the Clone Wars is able to take back control of Flight 93 before it crashes, landing safely and preventing even more tragedy from happening that day. In the end, all of the passengers who made harrowing last calls to their loved ones before perishing in a Pennsylvania field survive thanks to the power of the Force, and are awarded medals of honor by President Bush.
Twenty years after the attacks, it’s painful to think about what would have happened if people got to work 15 minutes later, or missed their trains that morning. There weren’t Jedi masters deployed to save people in real life, but for some of the fanfic writers working today, the world of Star Wars might feel just as removed as the world before September 11, 2001.
Fiction serves as a powerful playground for processing cultural events, especially generational trauma. The act isn't neutral though; a decade's worth of fanfiction that takes place on or around 9/11 shows how our own understanding of a traumatic event can shift with time.

So, considering you are a passionate fan of music released in 1971, I feel justifiably obligated to ask you what you think of Buffy Sainte-Marie's 'She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina' album. 😂 (Also, it would make me beyond happy if you could post more about Buffy, my friend! Thank you! ❣)
Buffy Sainte-Marie + Crazy Horse - what’s not to love? LOL I confess that it was the Crazy Horse connection that caught my attention first. I had a general idea who Buffy was, had seen her on TV a few times, but I was a big Crazy Horse fan. News that they were her backing band for this album was easily enough for me to scoop it up.
They weren’t doing anything much with Neil Young in 1971 (other than this album, on which Neil also appeared!), but they had released a tasty solo album in February 71, produced by Jack Nitzsche (who also produced this, and would later marry Buffy), and featuring Ry Cooder (also featured here, although did not marry Buffy).
(btw, the first place that Buffy, Ry, and Jack worked together was on the Nic Roeg film Performance, starring Mick Jagger. People obviously remember Mick in that, but musically, Buffy was the best part!)
She Used To Wanna... also features Jesse Ed Davis, a Native American guitarist and singer who was a frequent “usual suspect” at these sort of “sure, invite everyone!” jam albums of the era, and played a prominent role at 1971′s biggest concert (at least in the US), The Concert for Bangladesh on August 1.
(I know you know  RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked The World, the documentary about indigenous music’s influence on rock and roll, which has chapters on both Buffy and Jesse Ed. I just watched it again recently, and love it! A reminder of Buffy’s pivotal role in classic rock history. Not mentioned in the film: she relentlessly championed the work of her fellow Canadians Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, helping them get their first record deals.)

I haven’t listened to She Used To Wanna Be A Ballerina for a while, so I definitely need to do that, along with posting more pictures of Buffy.  (I can’t believe I’ve only posted two!)
But I’ll tell you what still stands out to me about that record years later. “Smack Water Jack” is an underrated track from Carole King’s Tapestry that got a ton of airplay at the time. Quincy Jones did an instrumental cover as the title track for his terrific 1971 album, too, but it has somehow faded to obscurity since then. Buffy takes a playful trifle, and turns it into a powerful fable of men of color who explode into violence in response to the violence visited upon them, and self-satisfaction of whites in authority who answer their demands for better living conditions by killing them on the spot.
No need for a trial when you can murder them in the streets, right? “You can't talk to a man when he don't wanna understand / And he don't wanna understand” hits different when Buffy sings it, and in 2020 for that matter.
It’s also just a terrific performance whose combination of soul and rock and roll and driving piano in a sort of Old West-sounding context would have made this sound right at home on a record like Elton John’s Tumbleweed Connection  or something by The Band. I’m limited to five video embeds per post so I can’t embed it here, so I'm linking instead: anyone who hasn’t heard this definitely needs to.
Her cover of Neil’s CSNY track “Helpless” has things I like even better than Neil’s original, including Merry Clayton standing in for CSN. Buffy’s version is more muscular (thanks again to Crazy Horse), and taps even more deeply into the isolation of the song that the star power of CSNY somewhat obscured.
Buffy’s version also made a brief but memorable appearance in the 2018 film Hotel Artemis, starring Jodie Foster. A weird little movie that I loved maybe more than it deserved LOL but I recommend nonetheless:

I know that this album gets attention because of the unusual number of covers, including one by Leonard Cohen, and a cover of a cover that Leonard had made famous on top of that, called "Song of the French Partisan” (hers is the far superior version imo, a song of French resistance to Nazi occupation from the perspective of a woman hiding a resister), but there are a couple of standout originals too.
I love the title of this record, and the title track is a delightful little stomper that playfully cautions against equating the intentions of grown women with the childhood fantasies they’ve grown out of. More Merry Clayton goodness here on backing vocals too.

“Soldier Blue” is a powerful song first written for the 1970 film of the same name, billed at the time as “The most savage film in history” -- and maybe it was. It used the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre as a metaphor for Vietnam, and it's still shockingly brutal. It was the third-highest grossing movie in the UK in 1971, though, and the single became a top-10 hit for Buffy there.
It didn’t do as well here, either the song or the movie. Perhaps not shockingly in retrospect, Soldier Blue was pulled from American theaters after a few days, the Vietnam metaphor not at all lost on the Nixon administration.
As horrifying as it was, this is about when I was reading Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (first published in 1970), and Soldier Blue resonated with me in a whole lot of ways. Here’s the song in the opening credits of the movie.
youtube
I was also really struck by “Moratorium”, which is the story of “Universal Soldier” (from her 1963 debut, but a bigger hit for Donovan in 1965), coming from the opposite direction. In the earlier song, she blamed war on the soldiers who think that fighting is honorable, but here, she has empathizes with the young men, boys really in many cases, who’ve been lied to by their countries, their parents, and even their friends. They’re not vainglorious. They’ve been duped by people they trusted.
(I don't think she takes enough into account how many men sign up to fight because they want to embrace and celebrate their worst, most violent impulses, which was of course an undercurrent of “Universal Soldier”, but I appreciate her empathy here. More than one thing is true at a time.)
Buffy goes even farther, though, calling on soldiers to support and validate demands for peace as explicitly supporting them, summed up in the unforgettable cry, "Fuck the war and bring our brothers home!"
1971 was the peak of antiwar demonstrations in the US, with the biggest crowds ever seen in this country until the 2017 Women’s March. The May 1971 demonstrations pretty much shut down Washington, culminating with Vietnam Veterans Against The War throwing back their medals on the steps of the US Capitol, incredibly powerful stuff to see on TV in my formative years, and Buffy was right there in it. Anti-war songs were a cottage industry for sure, but nobody was writing with the nuance and empathy that Buffy was.
Here’s a 1972 performance of “Moratorium”, Buffy and a piano, and more emotionally bare than that:
youtube
There’s obviously lots more to say about Buffy, far outside the realm of protest music that was actually just a small part of her musical palette -- her pioneering experiments with electronic music, her educational philanthropy starting in her 20s, Sesame Street, you name it. Her commercial peak was still in front of her, and while I can’t say that this is my favorite of her records, it does have some of my favorite songs of hers, and 1971 and She Used to Wanna Be A Ballerina is definitely where I went from knowing who Buffy Sainte-Marie was to being a fan.
I'll also note as I do now and again that while this blog started as an offshoot of a book on 1971 that I’d started but abandoned, I mostly listen to music released now. That’s always been my policy, including in 1971. When 1972 rolled up, I was mostly listening to music from 1972, music from ‘80 in ‘80, ‘91 in ‘91, 2018 in 2018, etc., to name just a few other favorites. (Plus The Beatles, okay? LOL I still listen to The Beatles every day. No apologies.) Honestly? It took me until 2011, in my fifties, when a whole bunch of 40th anniversary editions of 1971 albums got released all at once that made me think, “Wait a minute, this was maybe THE pivotal year in classic rock history!”
So yeah, the historian in me dug into 1971, but even though I happened to be alive and enthralled by music in that year, what I’m doing here has nothing to do with nostalgia, or any idea that that was the *best* year in music, even if for the narrow slice of music that is classic rock, yeah, it absolutely is. For soul/R&B too, and for the explosion of women artists outside the even narrower confines of pop as well. This is not subject to debate. No year like it, before or since. It's just that classic rock is a such a narrow slice, and I like my slices wide. LOL Which is also why my blog has less and less 1971 content as I go along.
While my general policy is that my favorite year for music is THIS year, this particular year hasn’t left me as much energy as usual for listening to music. Some of it is These Trying Times™, some of it is my bipolarity and schizophrenia getting the better of me in waves, as is the way with these, uhm, things. (Keep taking those meds, kids!) I listen to music and post about the people making it as a creative act, not a passive or reflexive one, and I just haven’t felt as creative as usual.
(This is also has everything to do with why so many Asks have been piling up unanswered. I apologize if you’re one of the many kind and indulgent souls who’s gotten in touch, but I swear I’m gonna get to ‘em all!)
To get an idea of what I’m ACTUALLY passionate about right now, my “to be edited later” running list of 2020 favorites randomly added to a playlist as I encounter them, to be properly curated later, is at Spotify, cleverly entitled “2020″ -- 94% women, which is about right. LOL
But since I do in fact listen to old stuff (by which I mean 2019 LOL), I made a list of mostly 2020 bangers from women rockers with some tasty treats from 2019 that I haven’t been able to let go of just yet, inspired by a post I saw at tumblr saying that punk music by women is just plain better (also beyond debate), called “Women Bangers: A Tumblr New Classics Jam”. I’ll be posting an essay with a YouTube playlist soon, because god forbid that I only talk briefly about anything LOL and most of these women need to be heard AND seen.
Like Buffy Sainte-Marie, whom you'll both see and hear more often on my blog soon. Thanks for the reminder! Always a pleasure to hear from you and be challenged by you. :-)
Peace, Tim

Moksha is attained by dis identification with the body and mind, which are temporary and subject to change, and realization of our true identity Moksh is positive concept in two important ways. First it stands for the realization of the ultimate Reality, a real enlightenment. The mukta is not just free from this or that, It is the master of sense and self, fearless and devoid of rancor, upright yet humble, treating all creatures as if they were he himself, wanting nothing, clinging to nothing. In Sikhism one rises from the life of do’s and don'ts to that of perfection — a state of "at-one-ment" with the All-self. Secondly, the mukta is not just a friend for all, he even strives for their freedom as well. Liked Forever, Elvisty and love the colors of the floral stems. • • PROFILE • Baljit Singh Chadha • • I grew up as a curious, investigative child helped by my parents’ encouragement to explore and to learn without fear and hesitation. The wonder and awe in God’s creation always held me spell bound. I ploughed my curiosity through love of creation and creativity. At a young age of nineteen years I sailed to a land called Japan that has for long centuries been spiritually bound with India. Like a sleepy rose the petals of my creativity opened as I drank like a honey-bee the nectar of ancient and highly evolved culture of Japan. Japanese art of painting is high meditation in feel and in expression. My Japanese godmother Ms Otha Miyoko a great Japanese artist was my first teacher. She affected my style and expression early on. My journey in art continued and I evolved a style of art that has minimal gap in feeling and expression. Rapidity and quickness of expression in my art comes from the well of inner spirituality. My art is not planned, thought-out and cerebral it is based on spontaneity. Abstract Expressionism is a wider term and my art follows it in variegated dimensions. In my art I experiment with different painting instruments and techniques. My dependence on brushwork is rather limited. I frequently and freely use spatulas, wooden sticks, masking, and sand-mix, push bottles and what comes handy in the moment. I use acrylic with mix media. I have developed acrylic based glazes that were possible earlier only with oil paints. The glazes impart a charm similar to enamel glazes. I created a new technique called ( FLOAT ON COLORS). My art journey finds depth and width in continuous experimentation, forays into the unknown and choosing challenging metaphors of expression. I did an installation (Wall of Divine flowers) with 12000 painting on 12-12-12-12hrs-12mnts-12sec at Zorba in New Delhi and donated entire collection to Smile Foundation New Delhi, for a girl child education. Chadha has a lasting honeymoon with flowers in his artistic expression. He paints sometimes with frugality of a Zen master. I can understand that as he had his early training in painting in Japan where he lived and studied as a teenager and had the benefit of the tutelage of great Japanese masters. But his present series on flowers nonplussed me with wonder and joy. He has in the present works a new dimension and a new personality of flowers that I have not seen before. This is because he has distilled the expression from his inner joy and happiness that is the essence of flowers per se and not from their forms. His flowers have a nearly expressionistic, abstract persona. He uses a watercolour like free flow of colour and tonalities to invest his work with a sensual poetry. His works are acrylic on paper and therefore amenable to idiosyncratic overflows that lends a fresh charm to his oeuvre. Another landmark quality of Baljit’s new works is that they are rendered in fiery shiny glazes. As we know glazes are traditionally done in oil paint medium. But Baljit has worked them with acrylic colour and without the use of pure impasto. The colours diluted with water float and embrace each other and still have lustrous intensity. Baljit Chadha has created a fresh stylistic edifice and his creative expression jumps from the visible-familiar to spiritually felt flowers in a divine Eden.
