One of my favorite yuri mangas is Dekisokonai no Himegimi-tachi (also known as Useless Princesses or something else Princesses Ican't remember but I like the useless one better). It's about the main couple building up an unlikely and dare I say uneven friendship while fundamentally not understanding each other. It's amusing to me, but the drama is good, if overt at times.

The main protagonist Kanade Kurokawa is an asocial, nerdy plain Jane who both admires and resents the type of beautiful, popular girls who have a shine to them and get picked to play the part of the princess in the school play. She's accidentally present when her schools queen bee, Nanaki Fujishiro, gets unceremoniously dumped by her cheating piece of shit of a boyfriend who never even saw her as a person. Desperate to say something after being discovered, Kanade ends up kind of accidentally comforting Nanaki. By which I mean she didn't mean it to be encouraging but Nanaki took it that way.

What Nanaki gets out of the interaction is "wow, I guess ugly people are still capable of compassion. And since beauty = morality -> I could probably make her bearable to look at!" What Kanade gets out of it is "what the shit and fuck."

So Nanaki makes Kanade her unwilling charity case. Kanade (believes she) has a weaker personality so she's unable to refuse. Kanade's nerd friends dump her because she's spending time with the intimidating gyaru who used to always call them shit like dog-poop-face, which is tbh kind of understandable but a bit of a rush decision. Then Nanaki gets into a fight with her guaru friends because she no longer wants to call other people dog-poop-faces and they see it as a betrayal, in the most 15-year-old popular girl move you could possibly think of. (I assume. I was always the dog-poop-face.)

So they end up hanging out even more, Nanaki thinking they're friends and Kanade thinking "what the shit and fuck." They are eventually joined by Kanade's fujoshi friend from the past and the least bitchy of Nanaki's gyaru friends, who is tall and has short hair and I am in love with.

Nanaki gets a crush on Kanade, the ex mean girl of my dreams likes Nanaki, the fandom-url-haver is trying to make sense of the real life yuri happening around her, and Kanade is still asking "what the shit and fuck". The author draws amazing overdramatic screaming and crying faces. The manga is like, way less stupid than my goofy ass makes it out to be. Highly recommended. They should mane an anime of it.

Her gift is her curse is her everything is the gaping maw in her chest: her life itself. Some days, perhaps even most days (but perhaps not most nights), it's something easy enough to ignore and take for granted.

And sometimes...

Sometimes every breath she takes rattles in her skull with its how-can-this-be's, every nerve and blood vessel in her body lit alight with an empty agony of the blood spilt and life and love lost for its to-be-able-to-be.

Her heart is so heavy and acheing it's past the point of tearing, of evisceration, just a black hole nothing that's consumed every inch of her with its should-not-be.

She's sitting. She doesn't remember sitting. She doesn't remember getting her Vision back, much like she doesn't remember losing it in the first place. The before was no different from the after was no different from the now, despite the impact on her memory.

Should she have it back? Was there even a point to it?

Would she be able to be happier, then? No, at least be able to hurt less, then? If she threw this 'blessing' into the sea, would it take all her gods-known suffering with it?

You are fucking alive.

"I..."

She wishes it were so simple. Can feel the knotted mess of pain and horrors in her chest swell up into her throat to try and choke her.

Do what you want.

Sasume recoils as if struck, wheezing, the knot of everything-nothing exploding tenfold, a hundredfold, into a black hole of all-consuming empty, burst out from ever pore and crevice as she sobs, full-bodied, curling into herself, feebly rocking even as she buries her hands into eyes, hapless and hopeless, weeping.

"I don't know what that means anymore...—"

no no guys guys listen to me they’re all the antithesis of what they’re meant to be and that’s why they’re such amazing and heartfelt characters

like, Caleb is a wizard who’s afraid of his own fire magic. his own power causes him to falter in battle. his strongest spells are his most dangerous to himself. wizards are supposed to be prideful of their magic, but Caleb’s is the reason he hates himself

Beau is a monk who never wanted to be. her job is one that people normally associate with being calm and collected and Beau was a wild rebellious kid who got dragged into this line of work against her will. she never wanted to be this!! but now she is and she’s gotta deal with it!!

Fjord is a warlock who never wanted power from his pact, which is why you’d think a warlock would make their pact at all. but no. Fjord made his pact because he wanted to live, not because he wanted power. he was a scared orphan who hated his tusks, not a buff, muscled, angry half-orc like people assumed

Nott is NOT, that’s the whole crux of her narrative! she wasn’t pretty, like a halfling girl was supposed to be. she wasn’t a goblin, she was just transformed into one. and not only that, but despite being a three-foot-tall alcoholic kleptomaniac, she’s the mom of the group!

Jester is a Cleric whose god isn’t actually a god and who would much rather bash bad guys over the head with her lollipop than have to stop and heal her friends!! she’s a bubbly, optimistic ray-of-sunshine, but you know when she says she’s gonna change the world with friendship she means it as a threat

Mollymauk is an amnesiac, but he doesn’t want to remember who he was. if you ask him, that wasn’t him! he might be a flirtatious hedonistic carnie, but he’s also single-mindedly devoted to making the world a better and more loved place than it was when he found it. he’s a liar, but he means well. he’s an arrogant fool, yes, but he’s right! he did it! he left it better!

Caduceus seems like he’d be creepy and grim from growing up in a graveyard, but he’s actually the most chill out of the entire Nein by far. he’s calm, he’s sweet, and he’s comforting, more than anything else. you’d think he’d be amazed by seeing the outside world for the first time, but he spends the whole time knowing that one day he’ll return home, that he wasn’t supposed to be the one to leave

Yasha is a barbarian with skeletal wings and a dramatic, monochromatic look, but she’s a complete sweetheart. she’s Molly’s best friend, she was a carnival bouncer, she’s a lesbian disaster who collects pressed flowers in a book out of love for the wife she lost. those black wings were actually hiding soft white feathers

Essek was born straight into the den of politics, he was a spymaster, he literally started a war for his own gain, and yet. he’s sounds irredeemable on paper, but. he’s not!! sure, the Nein kind of have to drag his alignment kicking and screaming into neutral, but they manage it. Essek learns and grows and he overcomes his nature. he becomes good, against all odds

guys guys guys don’t you see it!! look at them!!they’re such compelling characters!! they’re everything they’re not supposed to be!! dude y’all how didn’t I realize this earlier!! they subvert their narratives in the most interesting ways ever and I justhshsbhshshsjnsmshsnhsfn!!
