here’s another ask for you: talk abt whatever you want!!!
WAUGH thank u for a new one!!!!! ilysm!!!!!
rambling abt sonic and character foils and the IDW comics below the cut this is aimless enough for me to want it be an opt-in experience LOL
i was gonna talk abt this last night but it was 11 AnyWay. i saw a criticism of the IDW comics on reddit a long time ago and its got me thinking recently. someone said they didn't quite enjoy the way the comic was tackling sonic as a character not because of the inconsistencies in his pre-established beliefs (which are present) per se but because IDW keeps challenging them in ways that don't feel, from what i remember the comment saying, "good-spirited"? i hadnt heard that critique before so it was unique enough to catch my interest but not actually think much until now. but theres a reason for that hold on ok
so. to preface this whole thing. some of the most beloved stories in the series are ones that Do challenge sonic's beliefs. thats the reason why, when the series wants to tackle more mature content, they make foil characters. sa2 which reddit largely considers as having the best story has foil characters everywhere but specifically it spends a lot of energy on it's themes of identity and growth by making sonic and shadow clash not just physically but ideologically. that talk they have after final rush/chase basically spells it out and its framed as shadow hearing sonic out and then dismissing him ("what are you/i'm me/i see, well, i'm gonna beat your ass" <- basically). and then later on sonic's viewpoint is reinforced when shadow (airquotes) dies, but not before sonic himself is visibly impacted in the credits sequence. that whole story right there was, at least thematically, one about sonic having his beliefs challenged. SatBK does this as well, a game which is applauded within the general community as having the most accurate sonic characterization. stories that do adjacent things, like the OVA, s3&k, sa1, where character foils are a prominent part of the theming (though maybe not presented in a way where sonic himself necessarily feels ideologically Challenged), are often very popular as well
the time i saw the criticism was about when the surge saga was coming to an end, but i was new at that point so i really dismissed the whole discussion. sonics allowed to be challenged, thats what happens when you have a static character as a protagonist. but now that ive reread IDW a few times and have identified some of my own issues with the run so far i've been thinking about that reddit comment more often. why is the way IDW challenges sonic so different from the way stories like SatBK or sa2 challenge him? why is one intriguing and the other not "good-spirited?" nowadays i think the issue is less with tone or intent like the wording of the original comment implies, but the conclusion of those stories. all of those previous examples i gave culimate in sonic succeeding, yes bc hes the title character, but moreso bc hes the vehicle through which the themes of the series are delivered. SatBK wasn't going to have merlina win because the story was trying to tell the audience that life is only worth living when its finite. sa2 killed off shadow because it was about how being unable to move on eats someone from the inside out. these are broad overarching themes that are present in the whole series and its generally agreed that sonic at his best is representative of those themes, which is why hes static
but IDW kind of has a messy history with conclusions. or, at least, conclusions that feel like they are trying to Say something in the way i've been talking about. after everything is done and the threat of the week is defeated, it all kind of returns back to a status quo, which im very sure is not the fault of the writers. long-running series are supposed to have a status quo that keeps stuff the same so that new audiences wont be alienated by huge character histories and lore timelines and things to catch up on (The Most Intimidating thing abt like archie for example). its partially why u see almost no fleshed out arcs that span multiple games after 06 (man the word partially is doing some legwork there but if i talked abt why sonic games changed so drastically after the mid 2000's i would be here all fucking day). and there are conversations to be held about that status quo and its place in the games and whether its beneficial or not but imo when talking about IDW, a comic which is supposed to have continuity, it kind of obliterates the potential of having meaningful conclusions and the themes that come along with them. because IDW always approaches "sonic feels ideoloically challenged" and it never goes beyond it. it nudges and hints at criticism of IDW sonic's beliefs, actions, and philosophy, but it doesn't do anything with it. the status quo says sonic can't change that much, which is good when the conclusion of stories have themes that prove he's already got it figured out, and bad when there's a big gaping question mark where a lesson should be. the surge saga i think is the glaring example of this precisely because its so conclusionless (theres also how sonic himself engages with her but thats a convo for another day).
so when that redditor said they thought the surge saga lacked a "good-spiritedness" that stories with a similar concept like SatBK or sa2 had i think they were picking up the vibes of the story being kind of... pointless at least in terms of themes and actual impact on the characters, rather than a lack of earnestness, a tone blunder, or strange intent on the part of the writers
im really curious how the urban warfare saga is resolved now precisely bc this lack of meaningful conclusion problem is so prevalent . depending on how passionate i am i may make a more formal analysis post abt it or something, but probably not considering i read IDW very very casually . which feels like a contradiction after writing all this but . yanno

Fanfiction Etiquette 101
(Things You Didn't Know You Need To Know)
So, I have seen some discussions about these things on my dashboard, and I know some people are new to tumblr and new to fanfiction in general, so I decided to put this list together in case it might help people. And this stuff goes for all fandoms, no matter what type of fanfiction to write and post.
Also fyi, this post is mostly for people who write and post fanfiction.
1: Putting A Readmore/Cut On Fanfiction
So a 'readmore' (also known as a 'cut') is the ability to put the body of your fanfiction under a cut off link so that people's dashboards are not clogged up by long sprawling paragraphs of text. This is also helpful if your fic contains smut and people don't want to be subjected to smut - people have to click through to keep reading sensitive topics.
The button for it looks like this on desktop:
Tumblr media
And this bar of options comes up on desktop when you hit 'enter' on a blank line.
And it looks like this on mobile:
Tumblr media
Tumblr put it permanently into the hotbar of options so that it's easier for people to put a readmore on their posts on mobile.
Once you have inputted it, it comes up as a light grey jagged line, showing you where your text cuts off in the main post aka what text is visible before the cut and what's not.
And generally, I think it's a good idea to put the readmore after the first paragraph of your fic, or after the description/summary.
I have noticed that some people put it in after several paragraphs for a longer fic, but I think to make fics easier to reblog, you could put it closer to the top. And even if you're writing smut blurbs, you should put it close to the top to keep smut concealed in case people don't want to read or see smut.
If you don't use a readmore, people are less likely to reblog your fic because they don't want to put a long text wall on other people's dashboards.
2: Using (Stolen) Gifs As Fanfiction Covers
I have seen some discussion about using gifs from google, and people putting a gif that they have downloaded and simply writing under it 'this gif is not mine, please DM me if it's your and I will give you credit'.
It's generally established among gif makers that downloading random gifs and putting them on your fanfiction is bad etiquette. Those are considered stolen gifs.
Even if you say it's not yours and offer to give credit, any gif you repost that is not yours is considered a stolen gif.
Fanfiction writers and gif makers need to work together, not against each other. Reblog gif sets you like, and don't download random gifs, no matter what the source is.
The best way to use gifs as fanfiction covers is to make them yourself or to use the tumblr integrated gif search system.
The gif search system is in the same hot bar as the readmore, labelled under 'gif'.
When you pull it up and click on it, you type in the name of the character you are looking for, and then you can scroll through the results. You can click on a gif to add it to your post, and remove it if you don't like it. So you can try out different gifs to find the right fit of what you're looking for.
Tumblr media
And when you find what you're looking for and put it on your post, it automatically credits the gifmaker.
Tumblr media
And the credit appears like this. And the name of the gifmaker can be clicked and then it takes you to their blog, so you can see who made the gif. This is a much better way to use gifs, because if someone likes a gif they see on your fic post, they can click through to the original gifmaker and reblog it.
Alternatively, using stills from the show/piece of media you're fanfic is about is a great way to avoid using stolen gifs.
2.5: Using Flashing Gifs On Fanfiction
I have noticed that a lot of people use flashing dividers for their fics, and they don't tag it with a flashing warning (#flashing gif or something similar) and they don't see this as a problem.
Using a flashing gif in fanfiction without a warning can negatively affect disabled readers. Not just people with photosensitive seizures, but people with migraines and different types of eye issues.
3: Using Coloured Text For Fanfiction
Speaking of accessibility issues, I have noticed that many people (especially people new to tumblr/new to fanfiction) use Tumblr's coloured text option to differentiate characters in fanfiction - assigning one colour per character with dialogue.
Some people also just use coloured text for the whole body of their fics, just making it straight up unreadable for disabled people.
Using coloured text in fanfiction makes it inaccessible because certain types of colour blindness makes it unreliable to see on a white background, and bright colours can cause eye strain for different types of disabilities.
It is kinder to use the traditional black text for the body of your fic, and any important information (like the content warnings, DNI criteria, etc).
4: Putting Thorough Content Warnings On Fanfiction
Speaking of content warnings - I could (and probably should) make an entire post about this topic alone, because many writers (both new and old) are severely lacking in this department.
Content warnings are supposed to be more for just smut - and if you do have smut in your fic, you should put warnings for that, instead of just releasing for fic into the wild with no warnings at all. Content warnings are supposed to be for anything that could be potentially triggering for a reader - phobias and fears, sensitive topics, uncomfortable or fear-inducing situations, and kinks and nsfw topics.
Tbh I think not enough people put warnings for alcohol and alcohol consumption in their fics, because alcohol is far too normalized to most people, but again - I could probably make a whole post just about content warnings in fanfiction. Basically: if you think your post could be triggering to someone with an addiction or in addiction recovery (or triggering to a sober person who doesn't want to read about drugs or alcohol) - then include those things in the content warnings.
Fanfiction is about informed consent.
People need to be better informed about what the content of your fic is before they consent to reading it. Also, if you're worried about the warnings being too detailed and giving away 'spoilers' for your fic, then you're probably worried about the wrong thing. And you can just put a warning at the very top that says "the content warnings of this fic contain spoilers for the plot of the fic" and let people make their choice if they want to skip the content warnings or not.
Please, write about all the dark or sensitive topics that you want, but just put detailed warnings on your fic so people can be informed about it before reading your fic.
People always appreciate thorough warnings, and they are more likely to read your fic if they are fully informed before clicking into the body of it.
4.5: (Not) Censoring Content Warnings
Tumblr is not tiktok. (Same goes for posting fics on AO3, but this post is mostly about Tumblr fics.) On Tumblr you can say/spell out any word you want without your post being suppressed or taken down - suicide, kill, murder, fuck, abortion, hell, porn, tits, cumshot, etc.
So that means that when you're writing out the content warnings of a fic, you should write them out fully, rather than putting slang or alluding to the topics in a fic. (Again, informed consent.) Rather than saying 'this fic contains SA', say: 'this fic contains sexual assault' or 'this fic contains rape'.
I saw someone using the term 'unalive' in the content warnings of their fic, and tbh, that's what inspired me to make this whole post.
If you're not mature enough to spell out all the topics in the content warnings of the post, you're not mature enough to be writing and posting about those topics.
Also, try not to use terms that need to be looked up/implicit terms. Certain terms for kinks (like dacryphilia or somnophilia) might lead a person to google those terms and find things they don't want to see. So instead of using those terms, just say 'crying kink' or 'sleeping kink' instead, so that everything is spelled out plainly.
...
This is all I can think of for now. Basically, just be kind to others when posting fics. Be kind to gif makers, disabled readers, and anyone from your fandom who might have an interest in your fic! Be safe and have fun writing! <3

They bang. Finally.
Read on AO3 or you can find the sixteenth chapter below the readmore.
ch. 1 - 10 | ch. 11 - she underestimated just who she was stealing from | ch. 12 - no amount of freedom gets you clean | ch. 13 - stay stay stay | ch. 14 - call it what you want to | ch. 15 - even when you're sleeping, keep your eyes open | ch. 16 - you drew stars around my scars
Rhys's wings were redder than I'd originally thought. I hadn't noticed it until one morning a few days later, when sunlight streaming in from the window illuminated the membranes from the back, making them appear almost translucent. As I sipped my morning tea, my eyes kept drifting to the intricate network of veins, the outline of the delicate bones, and the gleaming, razor-sharp talons.
Cauldron, they were beautiful.
I hadn't had much time to admire them until then. The past few days had been full of training in the mornings and then reading lessons while Rhys caught up on the state of the Night Court and Prythian. For now, it was all we could handle. There was still so much we were both putting off, but neither one of us had slept through the night since our return.
But that morning, Cassian had insisted on a rest day, so I let myself stare over my mug of tea because we had the time for once. I wasn't quite ready to face a blank canvas just yet—and when I did, there were other things I needed to get out of my system first—but I'd paint this view one day.
Despite all the shameless flirting, I was still fairly certain Rhys didn't want to be ogled over breakfast, so I said, "How do you get a shirt over your wings?" I hadn't noticed telltale buttons on the back of the tunic he was wearing.
His eyes sparked as he cocked his head at me, his curiosity at my sudden question obvious. My cheeks heated. "I generally use magic to seal it shut," he said slowly.
"And how do you get them clean in the bath?"
"Sponges. Surely you're familiar with the concept?" Rhys said drily. I shot him an irritated look that just made him smirk. When he spoke again, I could have sworn his voice dropped a bit lower as he added, "So many questions this morning. Why?"
"I didn't have a chance to ask before." It wasn't really a lie—I hadn't shied away from asking the Inner Circle questions before I'd gone Under the Mountain, but once I'd realized exactly why Illyrian wings were so sensitive, I'd hesitated to ask much about them. Cassian and Azriel would have humored me, but there were some things that I didn't want to discuss with my mate's brothers.
"Come touch them if you're curious."
I stood up so quickly that I nearly knocked over my chair, then froze. "Are you sure?"
He certainly didn't look unsure, not with the way he was sitting with his legs spread, wings flared out wide behind him and one arm on the back of his chair. If anything, he looked arrogant. But it wasn't quite enough—I still wanted to hear him say it.
As I stepped around the table, I caught the slight movement of his throat bobbing. "Please touch my wings," he said.
I stopped just in front of him. To get my hands on his wings with him sitting down, I'd either need to put one hand on the back of the chair for balance as I leaned in…or I'd have to straddle his lap.
"You never had them out Under the Mountain."
His eyes didn't leave my face, even as I felt his fingers interlace with mine. "If something is precious to you, it's safest kept hidden."
Velaris. Our mating bond. And his wings, too. Away from prying eyes, there was security that came from being shrouded in darkness, and I'd felt that at the very core of the Night Court's magic. Stealth was key to hunting, and perhaps years of moving undetected through the woods had shaped me in the same way.
"No one else has ever…" I whispered, trailing off.
"I'd never let myself be vulnerable in that way. Not unless it's with you."
I didn't ask if it was because he loved me or because of the mating bond—I didn't care. Rhys trusted me, and that was the important part.
There was no point in hesitating or doing this by halves. I made myself comfortable on his lap, resting my thighs on either side of his hips. His hands settled on my waist.
I ran a finger down the membrane of his wing, careful to use the pad and not scrape it with my nail. It was smooth and surprisingly cool, almost like silk, but stretchier than I would have guessed. I kept dragging my finger down, moving it closer to where the wing met his back.
Rhys hissed and bucked his hips, jerking at the contact with a sensitive spot. I let out a squawk of surprise, and if he hadn't tightened his grip around my middle, he would have knocked me off his lap.
I started to ask if he was alright, but he just laughed and said, "I should have known you'd go straight for the most sensitive places."
Interesting. I skimmed my finger along his wing again, closer to the talon, where I guessed it wasn't quite as sensitive. If he'd let me, I'd map out every inch of his wings with my hands, learn everything until I knew them as intimately as I knew my own body.
Now that I was closer, I saw the scars. Or more accurately, I felt them—they were old and faint, but slightly stiff under the pressure from my finger. None of them were particularly large, but his wings were covered in them.
Rhys had the same healing magic as any other High Fae. Scars like this…they were the result of torture, intentional cruelty by someone with magic who knew what they were doing. And they'd already been there before he'd been trapped Under the Mountain.
"These are from the War, aren't they?" I said.
"Yes. They don't hurt as much as they used to."
I traced one with a finger, watching his face carefully for any sign of pain. He just shifted his hips under me. It gave me the confidence to splay my entire palm against his wing and slide it slowly down to that sensitive place from before. His answering groan heated my blood, and as I leaned down to kiss him, I ground against the rapidly-hardening length of him.
Rhys was still gripping my waist, as if now of all times he'd decided to be something of a gentleman, which was ridiculous when I was already straddling his lap. But maybe…I'd rushed him. It was still so soon after everything we'd just gone through.
I tipped my head back to look at him. "Do you want this?"
"Like I've never wanted anything else," he said, voice so rough it was nearly unrecognizable.
"Then move your hands down."
He slid both hands to my ass and squeezed, pressing me against him. I let my satisfaction at finding him harder than before cross the bond. As I leaned in again, I felt his growl reverberate in my chest just as strongly as I heard it.
I swept my hands across his wings in several directions, and no matter where I touched, Rhys couldn't keep still. Each caress made him shudder against me, the friction against my clit sweet and intoxicating, even through layers of fabric. His fingers dipped under my shirt, and I pulled my hands off his wings to shuck it off.
His face was between by breasts before my shirt hit the floor.
Rhys's tongue traced a line towards a nipple. I arched into him, and for a moment, I couldn't remember why his mouth had ever been anywhere but that very spot or how the endless well of need on both sides of the bond hadn't swallowed us both whole.
A plea floated into my head, through the bond so he didn't have to move his lips from my skin. If you never take your hands off me again, it will be too soon.
I skimmed my fingers down his wing, and territorial instinct had me wishing for paint or something to leave behind a mark on every bit of skin that I touched, to warn everyone else away from what was rightfully mine.
I hadn't meant for that thought to cross the bond, but it tore a keening, desperate noise from Rhys as his hips ground against mine again. I'm yours. Leave all the marks on me you wish.
"You're wearing too many clothes for that," I whispered.
Before I could scramble for buttons, I was on my back and on the floor, clothes gone and Rhys naked above me, cradling the back of my head in one broad hand. I thought we might have winnowed, but the world hadn't disappeared into smoke and shadow—no, he'd just pounced with that inhuman speed of his.
I could see the question in his face, the hesitation that this might have been too much and too fast for me, even with his eyes the darkest shade of violet I'd ever seen them. Despite how badly I could feel that he wanted to keep going, Rhys was giving me an opportunity to stop.
Not that I wanted to. Naked and under him was exactly where I wanted to be.
I pushed up onto an elbow and kissed him softly, cupping his face with my other hand. He leaned into the touch, then turned his head to kiss my palm. A shiver went through me at the memory of pomegranate seeds the last time his mouth had been there.
Rhys started to move down my body, and when I realized where exactly he was going, I locked my legs around his waist, keeping him in place. "Not now," I murmured. "Another time, but I want you inside me. Please."
His face darkened, and for a moment I thought I might have said something wrong—perhaps I'd pushed too hard or he merely did just want to bury his face between my thighs for now. He just said, "You don't beg. Not for anything, from anyone."
The words sounded like a vow. But before I could respond, his face broke into that cocky smile I'd come to love. With a teasing nudge at my entrance, he added, "But especially not for this—I'd never deny you."
True to his word, Rhys slid into me as I said, "I'm yours, too."
I let him set the pace as I kissed and nipped as his neck. Every mark I left drew another soft noise from him or a deeper thrust, and I wanted him covered in them.
He braced one hand against the tile floor to hold himself up, and the other seemed to be everywhere, squeezing my breasts, skimming down my stomach, circling my clit. The world narrowed to just the places our bodies touched and the golden thread connecting us. Before long, I was shattering around him as he spilled into me.
I'd hardly caught my breath when he winnowed us to his bed. And perhaps we should have ended up there sooner, instead of on the kitchen floor, but I was feeling too contented and comfortable to care. I lay back against the pillows as Rhys shifted, sprawling half on top of me with our legs tangling together. One wing draped over us both like a blanket, and he buried his face in the crook of my neck.
We were quiet for a long moment. His arm banded around my chest tightly, holding me to him as if he were afraid I'd disappear. With a stab of guilt, I wondered if he thought I might run off again. The bond was also quiet, but I suspected there might have been a reason he wasn't looking at me.
It was strange, I realized as I traced the swirl of a tattoo on his upper arm, to want to linger like this after sex. Everything before this had been in a barn or a cave—not somewhere I could just be held afterward. The lack of urgency driving me back to the woods to hunt or Rhys back Under the Mountain…I still couldn't bring myself to trust that it was real.
I double-checked that my shields were up; I didn't want that thought to interrupt any peace that Rhys had found.
"After the first decade Under the Mountain, I thought I'd never want another person to touch me again," he said eventually, so softly that I almost didn't hear it. The words were muffled against my skin, his breath warm. "I'd thought she'd stolen the ability to want like that, along with everything else. Calanmai was different, something that could only happen once. But then, after you told me you were trapping a Suriel, you said next time like it was inevitable, and I…started to believe it could happen. I wanted it to happen. I didn't know you well enough to love you yet. That's when I knew the mating bond had changed everything."
If I hadn't felt the way the bond in my chest had rearranged my the world for me, I wouldn't have understood. Love might not have been enough to fix what Amarantha had destroyed, but there was nothing more powerful than a mating bond. The cord didn't just tie us together—it held our shattered pieces in place to heal, like a cast around a broken bone. Nothing else could have done that.
"I love you," I said, because it still mattered. His hair was soft against my cheek as he turned his head to press a kiss to my collarbone. "And there's always going to be a next time, even if I have to tear the world apart to make it happen."
At that, Rhys finally looked at me; he smiled, eyes bright and without any sign of tears. "If it were anyone else, I would have thought those were just empty words," he said.
I shrugged. "I've been told I'm stubborn."
"'Perseverant' is a better word," he said, then leaned over to kiss me. "Or 'tenacious.'" He kissed me again. "Or 'undeterred.'" Another kiss. "And I love you for it."
"This sounds far too much like penmanship practice," I grumbled into his shoulder, though I suspected that ducking my head hadn't hid my smile.
"If you want more sentences about how handsome, delightful, and cunning I am, then I'm more than happy to oblige," he purred.
Cauldron boil and fry me—he knew the effect it had on me when he dropped his voice low like that. Heat pooled in my lower abdomen, and I didn't need the bond to sense the purely male smugness that oozed off of him.
With both of us naked atop his bed, perhaps it wasn't much of a surprise that we made sure next time happened a few minutes after that.
We would have stayed in bed all day if we'd been given the opportunity, but even a rest day wasn't completely free of obligations. Rhys had scheduled an appointment with a healer to discuss a regimen of exercises to regain strength in his wings and the utility of a sleeping draught, and that was too important to miss. I'd offered to go with, but there was no need.
For the first time in a while, I was alone. I didn't particularly want to be, and with the bond still on my mind from earlier, I realized I'd never asked Amren if her research on mating bonds had turned up anything promising. And if I was being honest with myself, I was also burning with curiosity about the lingering tension between Rhys and his Inner Circle. I dressed and headed for Amren's apartment.
The walk was short, but it was still enough to second-guess myself by the time I arrived. Amren and the others had their hands full, and she might not be home, let alone willing to entertain my questions. I took a breath and raised my hand to knock anyway.
Only for Amren to pull the door open before I made a sound.
"What brings you here, Feyre?" she said, slightly accusatory. By now, though, I knew that was as welcoming as she ever got.
"I came to speak to you," I said.
I didn't miss the way her nostrils flared and the grimace as she stepped aside to let me in. She must have scented what Rhys and I had been up to; I'd nearly forgotten that the fae could. I'd have to remember to bathe next time.
"Well?" she said, once I was inside.
"I wanted to thank you. For not trying to talk me out of going Under the Mountain."
It still took an effort not to squirm as she leveled her swirling silver eyes at me, even though I'd expected it. Coming here alone to say that, with the scent of Rhys and sex still lingering on me…she'd draw conclusions from it and probably share them with the Inner Circle. I'd thought about that and accepted it.
Jeweled bracelets on her wrists clinked together as Amren flicked a hand in a gesture that indicated it had been nothing. "Sending you was the only sound strategy we had," she said.
"What makes you say that?"
"There were no mated pairs with a fully accepted bond and one or both parties Under the Mountain. If there were, Amarantha would have been defeated well before you were even born."
I considered that. Mating bonds were rare, so perhaps it shouldn't have come as a surprise that Rhys and I were the only ones. And everyone trapped Under the Mountain had something or someone they loved—and after fifty years, that clearly hadn't been enough to save them.
It meant something. It didn't feel like a coincidence that Rhys and I were the only such pair, that I was human, that the Night Court's magic wanted something with me, that a hunter made of stars pointed to Velaris and I'd brought the High Lord of the Night Court back home.
I didn't understand everything, but I was supposed to be here in the Night Court.
Amren must have been able to tell I had more questions. She jerked her head towards the sitting area, then took a seat across from me. "Did you find anything on mating bonds between humans and faeries while I was gone?" I said. With Amren, it seemed best to get straight to the point.
"There might not be much to find. The most plausible theory is that the lifespans of a human and a faerie are too different for a mating bond to exist between them. Your being Made immortal supports that assertion," Amren said.
With everything that had happened lately, I'd nearly forgotten I was immortal. The lingering echo of magic still hadn't dimmed, but at some point, I'd grown used to it, like a background hum I could tune out. I'd have to face it eventually. One day, I wouldn't be able to ignore the fact that I'd stopped aging.
Before I could respond the sound of Mor's voice cut across the room. I nearly jumped out of my chair—I hadn't heard her winnow in. "If you were going to skip our meeting, the least you could have done was send a note," she was saying.
Her eyes landed on me as she stepped around a bookcase, and her scowl turned to a smile. "Or you could have said that Feyre was here," she added brightly.
Mor dropped into the seat between us and hugged me hello. It was still foreign to me, to be greeted this way, for someone to be pleased to see me and not just the game I was carrying out of the woods. I suspected I'd been hugged more often in my few weeks in the Night Court than all the rest of my life combined.
And it was definitely still strange to feel Mor's sharp inhale as she got closer to me and know what it meant.
"I was going to come speak to you later, but now works, too," Mor said. Her hair was pinned up into a bun, and her gown was a more subdued shade of red than what she typically favored—she must have been spending the morning attending to her duties as Rhys's Third. She'd been back to the Hewn City often lately.
"What about?" I said.
"How do you feel about a trip to the Day Court, emissary?"
"Now?"
Mor laughed and shook her head. "Gods, no. None of the courts are going to be up to hosting official visitors for a while yet, but if we're going to be first on the docket when the time comes, we need to start the conversation now."
Even with the glamour back in place, I hid my left hand instinctively at the memory of Helion approaching me Under the Mountain. "They're still our allies?" I said, though they must be if sending me there was under discussion at all.
"We have a shared border and need access to their libraries," Amren said.
"For what?" I asked. The library under the House of Wind was massive—it was difficult to imagine any information couldn't be found there.
"There are spells that don't require magic from the wielder," Amren said, watching me again as if she could see right through me. Not sizing me up, just interested in picking me apart and examining my component parts one by one. I tried not to shiver. "But that knowledge was destroyed during the War, by High Fae who were afraid it could fall into the hands of humans interested in using it against them. Day has the most extensive libraries in Prythian. If any scraps remain, they will be there."
I didn't need to ask why—I'd be safer with any magic at all at my disposal. And it would be best if we could manage it before my immortality became impossible to hide.
"It's a long shot," Mor said, "and it would have been, even before Amarantha burned most of Day's libraries. It's still worth a try."
When I'd learned a bit about the courts of Prythian before going Under the Mountain, there had been an offhand mention of a thousand libraries in Day. I sat in silence for a moment, just struggling to comprehend the scale of devastation.
It made the so-called blight on the Spring Court seem like nothing.
"Helion would share that information with us?" I said.
"The Day Court stands for widespread access to information, and their librarians keep information about who borrowed what confidential," Amren said. That seemed flimsy to me, and I started to ask about the possibility of spies when she grinned, showing her teeth. It didn't look friendly. "And I know how to make sure they stay quiet if it comes to that."
"With the shared border, there are plenty of reasons to send a Night delegation to Day that won't arouse any suspicion about what you are, Feyre. And sending just you, Amren, and me will help us get in front of any rumors that we're mistreating the Cursebreaker," Mor said.
It made perfect sense, but I still caught a slight hesitation. Perhaps because she thought I might not be ready or she anticipated an instinctive angry reaction to a plan that would separate me from my mate for a while. In truth, it was the potential of embarrassing myself as a poor reader that made me more nervous than anything. The Day Court could gawk at me if it kept the rest of Prythian off our backs.
If Feyre Cursebreaker was another role I'd have to play, then I'd do it.
"I'll go," I said. Mor and Amren shared a look as if they were communicating mind-to-mind—not daemati, just two people who knew each other well and had worked together for centuries. I shifted in my seat, uncomfortably aware they'd likely been discussing how to handle me again. After a moment, I added, "Have the rumors gotten worse?"
"Yes, but nothing we can't handle," Mor said, and I was struck again by the plain honesty, even though she knew it wasn't the answer I'd hoped for. "If you get out into Velaris more, that will help. You're well known, so word will spread if people see you, even if they can't say exactly where in the Night Court. I've been meaning to take you to dinner anyway. We could even find some blood for Amren and call it a girls' night."
Amren scowled. Mor tossed her head back and laughed.
I did want to see more of the city, though. So many other things had taken priority, but Velaris was the closest thing I had to a home anymore. Most of what I knew was the information Rhys had deposited in my head, and I wanted to find out more for myself.
"Just tell me when, and I'll be there," I said, and Mor beamed.
There wasn't much else to discuss, and Amren's irritation at two guests in her apartment was becoming palpable. Mor offered to winnow me back to the townhouse, but I was feeling restless from having spent so little time on my feet that day.
"And Feyre?" Mor said as we both stood to go. "I know my cousin knows how to treat a lady. If he doesn't get it together and take you on a proper date already, I'll kick his ass."
Amren made a disgusted noise behind me as Mor winked and then winnowed away. I took that as my cue to leave, saying a quick goodbye before hurrying down the stairs.
I felt lighter on the walk back to the townhouse. At first, I wasn't sure why, perhaps it was nothing more than just sunlight on my face and sea-scented air. But it ran deeper than that.
At some point, it clicked—I had plans to look forward to, for the first time in ages. Even in Spring, when I'd thought I'd found a bit of peace and a chance to rest and paint as much as I wished, I hadn't had that.
Happiness, the real, lasting kind, had never felt more tangible.

Reimbursing Rulilas Gontaut
• [x] returns the cost to Rulilas Gontaut
• [x] embodies an apology
• [x] acknowledges failure
• [x] provides a new opportunity for Rulilas Gontaut
• [x] relieves you of your guilt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes children grow up with a different perspective from the most and see the spirits of things. Sometimes only partially. This has given rise to stories of monsters under the bed or in the closet.  Some see the spirit of a particularly uncomfortable shirt, an unloved toy, a cat’s stealthy vomit, their resentment of something a classmate said or a spirit of their own fear of the dark.
Me? Aside from the mostly friendly spirits of the floorboards, I was tormented by the spirit of my guilt.  It was two months before she came. Ms. Gontaut. I had seen her walking the halls at school. The other kids said she must’ve been a teacher for one of the older grades, but none of us really knew. She came over one evening just before bedtime, apparently she had called ahead because my mom seemed to be expecting her.
“Do you know who I am?” she smiled gently while I stood in my pajamas and my confusion.
“Ms. Gontaut?”
“And do you know what I do?”
I shook my head.
“I check for monsters under beds.”
My mom smiled as if this was a joke, but I could see the now-usual sadness in her eyes.
“Mine’s behind the dresser.”
“I check there too.”
After studying her for a moment, “Adults can’t see it.” My friends couldn’t either, but I didn’t want to seem too crazy.
Ms. Gontaut’s eyes twinkled as she offered her hand, “You’ll have to take me to it then.”
After checking for my mom’s nodded assent, I led Ms. Gontaut to my room and gestured to the offending dresser. She paused in front of it before pulling something out of her pocket and cooing and calling as if to coax a dog.
:readmore:
It emerged with its sharp claws which it had used to dig into my heart the weeks previous and with its tentacles which it had used to choke me with sobs, but with its many eyes focused on this strange woman from school and, for the first time, without its fangs bared. As the monster ate the thing from her hand, she began to pet it and looked back to me.
“Have you given it a name?”
“What”
“A name. If you haven’t yet, that’s fine. I need to tell you something,” she gently took something that the monster had clutched in its claws, “You should probably sit.”
I sat on my bed and she handed me the thing she had retrieved. It was Iggles, an old gift from my father that I had lost years before from a time we visited an aquarium. I stroked the purple seahorse.
I’m sorry, I heard my father’s voice in my mind, Oh, Jimmy, I’m so sorry I had to leave you.
My eyes stung. But wasn’t it my fault? After all those angry things I had said that morning…
Ms. Gontaut’s hand was on mine, the other firm upon my monster. She shook her head.
“It isn’t your fault, Jimmy. It was never your fault.” She was studying the monster, interpreting its features.
“But I–” I broke into a sob.
“Maybe you said some words in anger that you regret, but you didn’t cause the storm and you didn’t loosen those rocks. You weren’t even there.”
“But what I said chased him! I saw it!”
She gazed at me with an apologetic understanding. I realized I had never quite seen eyes like hers before.
Ms. Gontaut gestured toward Iggles. I handed him over and she held him up in front of me.
I’m sorry… my father’s voice whispered in my mind.
“Focus carefully on this seahorse’s eyes. It is normal for words to stick with someone for a time; to chase, to torment, to remain, to comfort. But your words did not kill anyone. Followed, yes, but they caused no harm to him. Normally, people don’t even see them. Would you like me to make it so that you can’t see them?”
I considered the option for longer than I would have expected, my eyes supernaturally transfixed to Iggles’s button eyes. Concern about the monster next to us crossed my mind.
“You don’t have to fear this one. It’s coming with me. It will not be lurking around invisibly.”
“O-okay. Yes. As long as you promise they won’t hurt me.”
“Then continue staring at the eyes.”
I’m sorry, Jimmy. I’m sorry I frustrated you. I’m sorry I’m gone. I’m sorry I can’t be there for you. I love you. I love you…
My father’s voice ceased apologizing. The world around stilled a bit and the spell that seemed to keep my eyes locked finally broke. The monster was gone. The floorboards were merely floorboards.
“The weight of the guilt of your father’s death is not anyone’s to carry, especially not yours. If you feel the need to apologize for something you said, you can write it down, maybe. Or tell your seahorse?”
I love you. I love you. I love you…
“I’m sorry, Dad. I don’t hate you. I miss you.”
Ms. Gontaut held my hand for a while. I felt better. Still raw and anguished, but less guilt-wracked…not that I understood it in those terms at the time.
“It will still hurt,” she broke the silence at last, “The world can be like that. But it…the world…can offer happiness from time to time. I will not tell you to shed your grief. Only your guilt. If you need to talk to me at school, stop me any time.”
okay so i just steamrolled thru detective pikachu returns over the past 2 days because i was sick and had nothing else better to do and right after finishing it i went into the tags and WOWIE the negative reception is very large!! i do understand and even agree with some of it but i just felt the need to get my own thoughts down (again. sick with nothing better to do) so take a peek under readmore for very typical elongated halo ramblings about his fave video game series
for the record i never played the first game (only watched a few clips of it on youtube even) but i did go see the movie in theaters. just figured i'd mention this ahead of time so my favoritism is known and to prevent myself from coming off as a perfectly unbiased reviewer
BEWARE THE SPOILERS BTW
(post-editing note: it be long under here, you have been warned)
to start off YEAG this game is not worth 50 bucks! the story's pacing is all over the place and is very basic, the graphics are not particularly well refined, the characters' expressions do not fluctuate as much as they should (professor gordon in particular ;-; i felt so bad for him), and the voice acting outside of merloch and detective pikachu himself are kinda phoned in! it felt like an early 2000s 4kids dub for real. even the gameplay aspects themselves were rather meh in presentation; the button hitboxes were annoying to deal with and as cool as i thought the "main" mechanics were they were incredibly clunky and the tension they tried to build up in the "solving the case" climaxes was just Not It. there was absolutely no reason for the loading/pauses to take that long
(the pokemon gimmicks were okay tho. i would die for growlithe)
however, this isn't a problem specific to this game. while i enjoyed scarlet it was definitely not 60 bucks material (and when i went back to it for the teal mask i even went "good lord, did it always run this badly?"). i gotta give credit to detective pikachu, at least this game ran properly for the most part and never crashed on me lmao
while that doesn't negate the criticisms i previously mentioned i simply wanted to say that this is going to be a problem for as long as pokemon keeps making money. this isn't me finger-wagging at anyone in particular (i certainly have no room to talk, i did say i liked scarlet), i just wanted to say: yeah, pokemon has been A Mess
"but halo!" you cry. "you talked like the negative reception was overblown! what gives the giant negative paragraph??"
because much like scarlet, i still really enjoyed this game sdfjnsdk. how can i say that with confidence, though, when i largely agree that there were many, many issues to be had with its performance?
the word of the day: expectations
and perhaps this is where my bias comes into it. whenever i play a spinoff game (like snap or pokepark for instance), i don't really go into it for mindblowing gameplay and stories, i do it for the same reason this series has kept me enraptured for over a decade of my life:
the pokemon themselves!!
there are SO MANY little things that the regular games don't go into, and while i have my own headcanons and OCs i can play off of, it is so much fun to see actual canon material acknowledge certain things you've only ever theorized about!!
the whimsicott were so fun to watch float around, the article asking where a furret's tail began and ended made me laugh out loud, the fact that they went hard into the "slowpoke tails are eaten as food" thing, and the "let's not get into that right now" jokes about venonat hunting other pokemon and dusknoir eating souls LIKE. i LOVE when pokemon goes into its more "serious" aspects. i know main series games do it too occasionally but outside of offhanded mentions or pokedex entries, do they go this hard into them? if they do and i'm just stupid pls tell me about it i'll eat that shit up
being reminded of less-talked-about pokemon is always a plus and how can you not pop off when you see one of your faves included in the story? (INTELEON AND WOOPER I'LL KICK THEIR ASSES 4 U) it's simply fun immersing yourself into the world of pokemon and getting a glimpse of what it would be like to have pokemon walking down the street and how that affects everyday life! maybe the story is basic, but it served its purpose and i had fun going along with it!
perhaps it's just my mental illness talking, but walking around and seeing all the pokemon and THEN doing the quiz girl's quizzes was actually kinda nice! even if the puzzles weren't that hard, i can't lie and say i didn't pump my fist when i guessed where the mystery was going like with cramorant swallowing the jewel or how the passimian statues needed to hold different berries. overall, i just enjoyed being reminded of how much i know and what i love about this series
also, the ways they incorporated the movie were pretty baller. i liked how they didn't just do a repeat of the mewtwo plot from the movie and let me tell you, even tho i called it early on, i liked that my suspicions about the aurora drop being deoxys were confirmed!! (i suppose it's not that hard to guess bcs what other pokemon comes from space, but i just recently finished playing omega ruby again and i normally don't think about deoxys a lot so LET ME HAVE THIS)
plus "i heard they made a movie about the R case" MADE ME SCREAM. i thought they were just going to ignore the movie and do their own thing but then they DID THAT. incredible. you can call my expectations low (which is valid) but holy fuck
so the TLDR for those who want this: if you want a sweet but cliche game exploring the world of pokemon with a lot of funny moments + worldbuilding, then this game is perfect for you. if you want a game with a groundbreaking story with graphics to boot, then yeah, you're not gonna find it here. i've even seen people say their own nostalgia of the original spinoff wasn't enough to get them to enjoy this game, so take my words with a grain of salt
i would say just watch compilations of the game on youtube, but not every youtuber is gonna go fully exploring the game for all of its little details, so if you care about that kind of stuff, buying the game is your best bet. also if you don't care about that kind of stuff then you should just ignore the game altogether etc etc anYwAY
as for a TLDR for the TLDR: new pokemon snap is goated and i would say a more enjoyable experience than this game esp if you didn't like it so PLEASE buy it the game's only 30 bucks and you can throw treats at pokemon PLEASE it has so many sidequests and interactions you can partake in PLEASE i prommy i won't bite PLEASE stick your fingers in my enclosure PLEASE PLEASE PLE
accidentally made a new character for an april fools joke on discord. here's Rotcat! I'm not sure what they are or where they come from, but they are definitely more Rot than Cat. Putting gameplay thoughts under a readmore because it got longer than i wanted:
- can climb walls, can't drown, and can carry an item on it's back (equivalent of swallowing something, cannot dual-wield spears), Monk damage i think
If they seem overpowered, idk what to tell you. I guess it's kind of intentional considering how annoying the rot is in-game
- they don't have a mouth, and pull food into the growths on their back and tail in order to feed (gets fewer pips from plants than meat, like Hunter, has a high food requirement, probably like 7 | 3 or something)
- starts with very low reputation with all other creatures
- ignored by brother long legs and proto long legs, but DLLs and MLLs will still hunt them. they can't eat neuron flies or other rot creatures
- larger than a normal slugcat (about 1 head taller), but moves slower and has a slightly weaker jump
- similar point in the timeline to survivor and monk
TENTACLE MECHANICS yay ->
if they have at least one hand empty, pressing the throw button will launch a tentacle towards a creature or object (similar trajectory to rocks), the tentacle will begin to retract regardless of whether or not it hits something, pulling the grabbed item towards rotcat (items carried by creatures take priority over the creature itself in terms of what is grabbed first). You can let go of a trapped item or creature the same way you let go of other items.
Tentacles are not prehensile and cannot be controlled beyond choosing the direction they are launched in. You can have a maximum of two tentacles out at a time.
Smaller creatures cannot escape the grip of a tentacle by struggling and will be instantly killed once they are absorbed, but anything larger than rotcat must be stunned or near death before it can be absorbed. Creatures larger than a lizard have to be fully dead.
Creatures like scavengers or red spiders can still throw/spit at rotcat while in the grip of a tentacle and can escape if they hit/paralyze rotcat (unless they are stunned/dead, of course). Similarly, lizards can still bite or kill rotcat while they are in the grip of a tentacle and are not stunned or dead.
possible timeline for be mine/because, onlyoneof
Tumblr media
so at this point we’ve all noticed that the because mv is not in chronological order! and so i have taken it upon myself to try and make sense of the timeline!
someone probably did this before me and we will def get more clarification in the bts video when that comes out, but in the meantime this is me asking for peer review (feedback from lyonblr). since the characters aren’t named i’m just gonna use stage names.
[reasoning, screenshots, alternative theories, and caveats under the readmore!]
Tumblr media
my general hypothesis:
junji is hanging out at a cafe and rie walks in. they start hanging out a lot after junji asks rie out. one day they make paper cranes how cute and symbolic, they hang out at the pool, it’s a whole thing! very fun and exciting 4 them i love that
junji comes to rie’s place to hang out and they run around in the backyard with a garden hose to cool off, then make food. they go take a nap afterwards, rie plays photographer, and then there may be a vague fade-to-black.
the next time we see them they’re on the couch again having a conversation and rie says something that unexpectedly upsets junji, who spills the box of cranes. he doesn’t look so much angry as hurt and rushes out immediately after rie tries to comfort him.
one evening, junji runs into rie at the phone booth and interrupts his call with a knock on the glass. rie looks surprised at first, bashful next, but they are both glad to see each other.
another night, rie meets junji at the same pool where they previously shared that underwater kiss. this time rie doesn’t join junji in the pool. they go together to the cafe, junji holds rie’s hands and kisses him there instead, the end!
ALTERNATIVELY TO ALL OF THAT. perhaps junji’s solo simply progresses forward in time and rie’s moves backwards, ruminating on what led them to the breakup. but i don’t want love to lose this time!!! so, let’s start at the start. or is it?
junji and rie notice each other at the cafe.
Tumblr media
junji sees rie walking away after ordering coffee and runs after him to ask him out, rie says yeah, and junji is very excited about it! (side note i do NOT know korean so it is impossible for me to lip read what it actually is that they say to each other... we might find out in the bts video but if anyone knows now pls lmk! i think i saw someone suggest that junji asked ‘can i see you again’ but idr where)
Tumblr media
ANOTHER THEORY! **if that’s true, if he says ‘will i see you again,’ then it’s possible the pool kiss when rie was wearing (and took off lol) that green patterned shirt was their first meeting! no real evidence for this, and not a whisper of it in the be mine mv, so for my hypothesis i’m deferring to the lowest common denominator, but i think it’s veeeeery possible. could explain that ‘again’ and why rie was at the cafe in the first place when he clearly does laundry at home haha, maybe junji mentioned it and he wanted to see him again too who knows. changes the first sentence of my hypothesis to “junji spots a cutie alone at the pool and introduces himself. they hit it off very well, well enough to kiss underwater.”**
ok now the complicated part that ive hinged my theories on. i counted seven different outfits for each of them across the two music videos; that’s how i organized the scenes to start puzzling out the timeline in the 1st place. so there’s a shot that shows up in both vids, them eating ramen on the balcony with a clothesline above. i was able to identify where 2 out of the 4 shirts were worn in the music videos. the white shirts im unsure of. both characters wear white tees at some point but the print doesn’t match either as far as i can tell and i didnt see the striped white button-down either (it isn’t the one that junji wore during the argument, the stripes are too wide)... hjaelp
Tumblr media
i think maybe its just more of rie’s laundry and there’s no use thinking any harder.
regardless. while they are in the tank top outfits with their hair still damp from the backyard date, we can see these on the clothesline:
a) rie’s green button-down from the pool scene that ends in a kiss
Tumblr media
b) rie’s yellow button-down from them hanging out on the couch doing origami,  listening to music, n dancing on the balcony
Tumblr media
IF we take this to mean that these things have already happened (big if. maybe it’s just random set dressing there is no way to be sure), THEN (**let’s note that i think it’s possible the pool kiss was their first meeting, as i said above!**) before their backyard date/mini photoshoot, they have:
- met at the cafe when junji ran after rie (because it is necessary for them to start actually dating),
- kissed in the pool (shirt is on clothesline), and
- made the paper cranes (shirt also on clothesline).
unsure of what order those things happened in except i think the paper cranes must have come last because of their sheer numbers. there’s so many of them they must have been hanging out for a while to make all those lil guys.
that leaves three more outfits/scenes to be slotted in somewhere, and those are:
- rie’s fuzzy shirt that he wears during the argument and after junji leaves
Tumblr media
- junji’s red button-down that he wears when he interrupts rie’s phone call in the booth at sundown, and
Tumblr media
- rie’s checked blue sweater that he wears when he meets junji at the pool (separate time from the underwater kiss) and during the cafe kiss. this one’s important because it tells me that these two things happened on the same day, and i’ve thus inferred that the pool could be a special place precisely because it was where they first kissed/first met.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as i see it, junji happened to run into rie (or maybe he was looking for him there) at the phone booth, maybe as he was leaving a message for junji, trying to explain and apologize, and took the opportunity to reconnect. they agreed to meet later and properly sort things out.
rie meets junji at the pool (where they maybe first met), but this time, they don’t kiss underwater in an empty pool where nobody can see them. they go together to the cafe, both a little nervous, and junji kisses rie.
if, as i’ve seen people speculate (and as i think makes perfect sense! see etienne’s musings here and here, evidence here, and another similar interpretation here), the cafe kiss is a sort of make-up kiss where they re-commit to their relationship, it would make sense for it to be after the fight and the last chronological scene of their story, slightly wary but hopeful and very in love as their relationship evolves!
all that is to say that none of this could be correct in terms of ‘canon’ but it’s what i came up with from what they gave us! thanks for reading :-) what are your thoughts??
20 questions for fic writers
Thank you @ussjellyfish for the tag! I also think I've done this sometime before, but hey, some of these answers might have changed, who knows, so I'll do it again :)
Okay, let's do this:
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
78 now! :) Not as many as others, but hey, I'm proud of all of them, and proud of my accomplishments as a writer.
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
1,739,321 - I didn't know I was *that* much over a million! I remember crossing the one million threshold with And Now You, and being so amazed and happy!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Almost all Bering and Wells these days. I've also written for a couple of Star Trek shows (Voyager, TNG, DS9) and a sprinkling of Discworld. Oh, and a Doctor Who crossover!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
All of these are Bering and Wells/Warehouse 13!
In the Warmth of Friends - two artifacts work together to bring Christina back. How does that work out, for Helena, for Christina, for Myka?
What Goes Around Comes Around (That Halloween Story) - at Halloween, the veils between the worlds are thin - so thin that a person might stumble from Victorian London to modern day Brooklyn. AU with infant!Christina, and Helena trying not to be found out, and realizing being found out isn't so bad after all.
And Now You - my magnum opus; 264K words of a high school AU. It's not a slow burn; they kiss in ch4 - but then what? How do two teenaged girls navigate a relationship and their own two personal lives, with all that that entails? (plus a big plot twist that happens halfway through the story and changes everything yet again)
Mind Over Matter (Hearts Over Minds) - my foray into A/B/O dynamics for Bering and Wells! It was fun to think about how a society might work when you have alphas and omegas and people who are neither. In my story, Helena is an omega, and was bronzed partially for that; Myka is an alpha, and also a trans woman (which comes with its own complications!)
Iron Woman - an AU in which Helena is a genius inventor and CEO, and Myka applies to be her personal assistant - and then discovers that her boss has not just one big secret! Comes with a part 2!
I'll put the rest of the questions under a readmore; this is getting long! 😅
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! I love connecting over my story, be it a one-time reader with a username I've never before encountered, or someone who often or always comments on my stories, or a fandom friend. At the very least I want to show my appreciation for getting a comment! Also, this thing about "replying to comments artificially inflates your comment count" - I'm sorry, WHAT. Just, no. Thankfully I've never been in a fandom (or fandom corners) where that was something people told authors. If you take the time to leave me a comment, I will answer you.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
In part 1 of my Doctor Who crossover, they all die. Although there IS a part 2 which kinda subverts that, so it might not count 😅 I am a sucker for happy endings, and so mine are rarely angsty.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them? 😂 I mean, what defines a happy ending is the story stakes, right? I did write one, for example, in which the world learned that H.G. Wells was actually a woman. But that only made sense in THAT story, not in any other - but that doesn't make that ending happier than the endings of my other stories!
8. Do you get hate on fic?
I've gotten one (1) hateful comment, which was HILARIOUS in its "dude, just click the back button" entitledness. On the A/B/O fic, by the way, which I suppose is understandable since that is, in and of itself, a pretty contested trope and also one that's not frequent in the Bering and Wells fandom. I didn't recognize the commenter's name from other B&W fics, so I'm thinking they got to my fic via the A/B/O tag and not the B&W tag. Anyway, it was so clearly not about my story or myself and all about that person's takeaway that I could laugh it off.
9. Do you write smut?
Happily, and currently almost exclusively 😅 My muse has a very dirty mind these days, and I am happy to oblige.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Yes! From the very beginning, although that was "just" two Star Trek shows, so the characters already existed in the same universe. The other actual crossovers I've written were with characters from Doctor Who (one with the Doctor, and one with Jack Harkness). And sometimes I write little cameos, such as Sophie Deveraux appearing in one of my stories, near the end. Oh, and a Wonder Woman crossover!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Again, not to my knowledge. But I had one of my fics turned into a podfic!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
In a way, yes: Submerged Submission is a fic made from roleplay I'm doing with a friend. There is also another I'm working on, but that is nowhere near done yet!
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Hmmmm... *rubs chin* I don't know... What could it be... 😂 (Bering and Wells. It's Bering and Wells. They are my One True Pairing, in the strictest sense of the phrase. I don't ship anyone else the way I do them.)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I have put a few fics up on AO3 with a disclaimer that I don't have an idea of where they're going and thus will no longer write them. What was there was good and so I published them, but I'm certain my muse has turned away from them for good. I'd be happy if someone else took them up, honestly!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Emotions! Both thinking my way through emotional ramifications of plot events, and describing them. I feel emotions very deeply, myself, and I'm glad that writing gives me the opportunity to parse them and make sense of them and inflict them on my readers :D :D
I'm also good at What Ifs, I think. I love writing AUs that answer What If questions. What if A/B/O was actually a thing; how would society look? What if Helena did have Christina back; what would that mean for her? I love to really think my way through that.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Not a writer of case fics, usually. Any "action plot" is usually only there as scaffolding for the emotional developments 😅 Also, sticking with one WIP until it's done, but I'm learning to be okay with that. It's like snacks: sometimes you're in the mood for chips, sometimes chocolate chip cookies. Sometimes I'm in the mood to work on a smut fic, sometimes a pirate AU (yes, I haven't given up on that one!)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Na klar! :D I'm multilingual; fluent in English and German, and conversant in French. Plus smatterings of a few other languages too. I do provide translations when I do, but typically in the notes rather than the text itself - but I do try to write it in such a way that the reader can glean what happened even if they don't speak that language and haven't scrolled to the end notes yet. Writing Kathryn Janeway confronted with an old Italian Nonna without a universal translator was a HOOT!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Voyager!
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh, gosh. That is such a hard question. I'm super proud of And Now You, my high school AU. It's my longest continuous work (I have a series that is longer), it brought me over the million-words-mark, it's a really good story about two teenagers in love. I'm also still very happy with that series I just mentioned, which is the first thing I ever wrote - granted, I was in my early 30s, so no teenage attempt, but still. Hit the ground running! Fell in love with Kathryn Janeway, and wrote myself onto the good ship Voyager. Had a lot of fun with that, and like I said, still like the result.
All right, these are the questions, and my answers to them! Now I'm supposed to tag writer friends, to see if they want to answer them too. Here goes:
@anandabrat @madronash @kloperslegend @kla1991 @elsiebrayisgay @galactic-pirates @tryingthisfangirlthing @lilolilyr - no obligation, of course! And also if you wanna do this and I haven't tagged you, just go ahead!
vvv
The questions!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
3. What fandoms do you write for?
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
8. Do you get hate on fic?
9. Do you write smut?
10. Do you write crossovers?
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
16. What are your writing strengths?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
19. First fandom you wrote for?
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Can you please put a spoiler tag on your posts? Or put the images under a readmore? Not all of us want to see an image that isn't even out in the English app. I think cybird prohibits posting the full CG on social media. Thank you.
And there is always *that* person. Since I know how this wonderful fandom works and I can see my account being reported in mass again because of a picture because someone is not happy let me explain a few things.
I post what I think people would like. As you stated there is a difference in the JP and EN apps. I don’t play the EN app anymore because of the fandom at large and well people here. I only play the JP or Ta ones. (Still find it hilarious that people don’t realize the reality of their own actions) I spent the good part of three years dealing with people who were mean and callous and if you didn’t fall into their group think or dared to say their favorite wasn’t something you like oh freaking hell Canceled.
It is why I walked away and cut ties with people. I guess with age comes wisdom to realize none of this was worth it. The reality of doing this type of comment with the veiled threat(which btw they aren’t the FULL cg) Is entitled to the max and again not worth MY time. So I won’t post any extras. Im cool with that.
Also don’t try and deny it wasn’t a threat. It was and you know it. So either you are new to fandom or you don’t know me cause I don’t back down from them and I have had the crazy unleashed in me before and well I am still here and the other person is not. There is a block button block me. Please dear god block me. I would block you but yeah anon.
However nonnie you better have the same freaking energy with making comments to all the jp players who do translations, the people who have their shops making money off of their artwork off of these characters, and anyone who does any transactions with these characters. I posted a picture, not even the full ones, from one half of the game. I also don’t charge anything.
So yeah. Thanks again for showing me why I left in the first place and why I moved on. Have the week you deserve.
Everyone else….. sorry but Nonnie doesn’t want to see the pics from the JP game. I mean there is only a few months difference on most story games now but you know their feelings should always come first since the fandom is theirs and only theirs.
21. For Murderella for the Soft OTP Prompts!
21- Write about your ship showing each other physical affection.
this turned a lil nsfw so uhh readmore!!! tysm i loved writing this ehhehe.
They had come back early from the bar before everyone else – unable to stay off each other. Zorya leads him through the eerily quiet Mordhaus, but it’s taking too long, and he pushes her up against the stone wall. His bedroom door is practically miles away at the end of the hallway. His bowtie hangs from his neck - he’s lucky he still has it at all, after Zorya ripped his shirt open in the limo. But it means she can run her hands up through the curly hair on his chest. Her nails dig in just under his neck, as she can’t help herself. She loves touching him.
“The room’s just there, Will,” she giggles as his lips lead down from her neck to her chest. She tries to hold his head back by gripping his curly hair, but there’s so little effort behind it. “Someone might see.”
“You don’t care.”
He’s right, but she thought she might as well try. He falls to his knees before her, and she holds his head, looking down at him, cheeks flushed. He looks up, his large hands holding her hips – his thumbs can almost touch as his fingers spread, and they’re nearly putting pressure on her already throbbing clit. When their eyes meet, he feels his own face go red. “You’re, scho…”
“Hm?” she tilts her head, unable to hear him.
“Perfect.” His eyes trail down from her lips, down her long neck to her prominent collar bones. He stares at the curve of her breasts, barely contained by the tiny green corset top she has, and then her little belly button, and the creases on her hips acting as two neon arrows pointing down to her pussy. Where he can see the hint of her happy trail growing back (he doesn’t mention it, but he loves it) under her skirt, which leaves so little to the imagination with the two giant slits on either side, she might as well be wearing nothing (and he knows she actually is underneath, because she’s sat on his lap for a majority of the night, on his hand, and left a scent that drove him fucking nuts and was why they left in the first place).
His left hand drags down onto her thigh, and thumbs over the healed scars on her skin, appreciative and loving of them. Understanding on a level Zorya wishes he wasn’t – but it also makes her heart beat faster. Chapped lips grace them with a peck, before he leads his lips to her inner thigh, biting down as he shifts the skirt out of his way.
“Will,” he’s parting her legs with his head, wanting to hear her say his name again. To beg for it. Because so few women put in the effort of acting like he turns them on like Zorya – to the level he is comfortable saying that hey, maybe it’s all genuine. So until she decides to reveal that this has all been some big prank, he decides to lap it up – literally – for as long as he can. To show her what he can do, what he wants to do, and to devour the way she says his name, and the attention she gives him while she deigns to give it. She’s his patron saint of indulgence, and he will pray.
Before meeting Zorya, he’d never be able to say that he’s tasted divinity. Now he can boast that his large tongue has pressed against the wetness of Aphrodite’s waves themselves – he has touched and studied godliness so closely he could recognise it in a line up blindfolded.
His head is dragged away from her as she almost screams, her chest heaving as she catches her breath, and he looks at her with a gaping mouth, tongue licking the juices from his lips. “What,” he asks, chin on her hip, his hands going to her behind to wriggle her around in his grip, “Lemme keep goin’,”
Zorya takes his chin and brings him back up to his feet, “In-in your room,” she asks with a smile. She strokes his cheek, and her smile and her blushing makes him grin. “Worships me in private tonight.”
“Yesch ma’am.” he obeys, allowing her to finally move from the wall and lead him down to their temple.
GAME: 1888: Amenti by Mundos Infinitos
DESCRIPTION: “You have run too long from your past. But it is impossible to escape from the desert’s sun. It will test you, you will be judged. ”
ITEMS NEEDED: Dice; 1d4
THOUGHTS: This one took me a bit to get into because of how the page is formatted tbh! But with knowing it was designed to fit on a card, it makes more sense why it was organised partly the way it was. I played off of a PDF on my computer, so it wasn’t the intended form it be played off of.
After getting a little more familiar with the flow of when to roll for what — it was quite fun! I went more in a literal ‘come across the trial’ way, with the actual events of the bulk of the play actually happening inside the character (the beginning and the ending are outside of the character’s head). It was interesting to see how the different animal combinations could interact with the other desolations! Honestly it could benefit from a touch more choices, but it’s still incredibly enjoyable with the four possibilities in the categories. (:
I definitely recommend trying it out if you’re interested in some pocket ttrpgs, as well as a lot of creative freedom in interpreting the prompts/results.
unedited playthru is under the readmore (:
Tumblr media
The stiff cloth my uniform was made out of was ill-suited to the oppressive heat and dryness of the desert. The starch felt like it was seeping out of the fabric and into my skin. It wasn’t supposed to be this long to travel. The calling for sandstorms had the majority of my brothers in arms uneasy to even start.
But we had to go. The higher-ups said it was critical for our home’s victory that we continued this mission, though they weren’t able to go themselves. They said our home was depending on it.
And now most of my brothers are lost.
Not even dead — just… lost. Their bodies swallowed by the sands. I hope at least some of them were lucky enough to get out, but I am hesitant to even wish for that hope for longer than a second.
I don’t have much in the way of supplies. My canteen can’t have more than a half-day’s worth of water in it, and even that tastes gritty from the encroaching sand. A compass is useless if I don’t know where I’m supposed to be heading, especially with its accompanying map long lost to the storm. A torn blanket, a piece of short metal making a sorry knife, and this journal.
A sorry state of supplies. We should have been allowed better preparations if this was as important as the higher ups were making it out to be to us. I wonder if they knew this was a Hail Mary of a mission, since none of them volunteered their own feet to take it.
FIRST VISION: Rolled 3; 3; 1; 2 At the Eternal Twilight, you arrive at an Antelope’s Carcass, a Scorpion, tough but ruthless, watches you.
I’ve run out of water. The canteen got a lot more sand into its seal than I originally thought. I tried to drink from it and got a mouthful of sludgy wet sand. Cruel.
I wonder if this is punishment from the gods for fighting amongst ourselves… if this is some way that they want to force us to behave. A cruelty for a cruelty.
The night is so cold.
Twilight didn’t seem to leave this place. Cold and sparkling — deep aubergine and Prussian blue, sand and stars glinting like well polished silver buttons. I feel tension sitting underneath my skin. A taut feeling, like my emotions are simmering just under the lid of a pot.
My feet continue to walk. The sweat in my once-shined boots squelching against my feet like my nightmares of the trenches when I was a younger man. I didn’t think I would ever have to feel that place again. I can almost hear the slosh of the muck in that filled those hellish lines as my feet continue to move forward.
The smell of rot hit my nose, and it took me a moment to realise it was not a memory.
How could there be a rotting antelope’s carcass this far out in these cursed sands? Was it another poor victim of the sandstorms’ cruel games? My eyes slide over the carcass that looks far too wet to for how dead the animal is. Its wide, dead eyes stared into mine, its face split.
I saw my friend’s face in the trench — hit dead by the cheap materials we had been given to reinforce the trench wall bursting into shrapnel we couldn’t have anticipated from an artillery shell. He’d been laughing and joking only a few minutes earlier, and in an instant those bright brown eyes were dull and bloody and wide from the surprise of death. I was covered in my friend. I couldn’t patch him back together. What use was I? What use was my fucking training if I couldn’t even do that? We weren’t old enough to see death like that, no grown man should see death like that, but certainly no teenager.
A small, jewel-green scorpion crawled out from inside of the carcass. Filaments of gold threading through its carapace, looping in constellations. It shone so bright in contrast to my dead friend — cutting through what I saw to show just the carcass of the antelope.
I didn’t notice I was sobbing until that first heaving of air.
The scorpion stared at me. I felt its eyes watching, and its tail twitching and ready.
There was no care for the lost life it was standing on. Squared up to me in a display of terrible survivalism. It lived and my friends died.
Wars like this weren’t for the the betterment of citizens, they were for those that didn’t know the rot of trenchfoot, of the slick inside your jacket that you can’t tell if it’s rain or blood or a festering wound finally weeping. They only thought of how to move chess pieces, they didn’t care if their machinations caused young men to expel their own lungs. They wanted glory without sacrificing anything of their own.
ROLLED 3; passed the Trial. Found water.
My eyes didn’t leave the scorpion until I was well past being able to actually see it. A soldier’s truce on no man’s land.
I thought it was another cruel trick of my eyes when I saw the spritz of grasses and the water. Gods, I was so thirsty. Carefully, my raw throat managed to whisper out a ‘thank you’ to whoever had allowed me to come across this water. My canteen carefully washed and refilled, water cupped in my cracked hands and held to my lips. I drank and I thanked the gods again.
Though I wished I could stay, I knew I had to keep walking.
SECOND VISION: Rolled 1; 1, 1, 3 In the Cold Night, you find The Jackal, cunning but opportunistic, climbing a Dead Tree
The night changed the oppressive heat of the desert to a bone chilled cold. It scared me. I remember the cold and the wet, I could feel it still sticking to my skin even though it was only a memory now. I wrapped the torn blanket tighter around my shoulders.
The gnarled dead tree stood solitary in the mass of flat sand. Bleached white as washed bones. It didn’t seem a place to rest, at least not to me.
Glinting eyes of a fire orange and coal jackal peering down from one of the natural resting spaces in the juts didn’t startle me as much as I expected. It looked unnatural just like the scorpion. My heart is being weighed in their eyes.
It wasn’t forcing the deadwood into a shape of its fancy, it was taking the situation it was given and making it work for it.
The coal colour of its fur spitting out from where I could see it nestled in the tree forced the memory of the soot and screaming machinery. It turned everything dead and grey in its path. Before this war, when I was just a young boy, I thought metal was always cold. It didn’t make sense that metal could be hot and screaming if it wasn’t the molten glow from the blacksmith.
Men and metal don’t mix.
But, I guess, we can only work with the situation we have. Our brothers can’t be lost for nothing, we can end with fewer limbs lost if we can find the right way to do it.
ROLLED 4; passed the Trial. Stars show the way.
Rhythmic blinking of the constellations above me caught my tired eyes — they were dragging my mind to follow them. This must be the way I need to be going. I must follow them.
THIRD VISION: Rolled 2; 4, 4, 4 At the Bright Sunrise, you see two Gerbils, nimble but weak, fighting amidst the a Dry River.
The light hurt my eyes. It was so unrelentingly bright, my eyes felt scorched inside their sockets. The pain stuttered my focus. I tripped into the desiccated river before I ever saw it.
Two small, enraged rodents were fighting each other. Screaming at one another and trying to rend blood from the other.
I felt white-hot anger — hotter than the baking sun and the piercing spit of the sand. Violence seeped to the marrow of my bones. Don’t they know they’re on the same side? Shouldn’t they want to work together to survive in this forsaken place? Why don’t they understand they’ll both die killing each other and the vulture will eat them both the same?
My hand shot out and grabbed one of the screeching things. Enraged and disgusted, they both were going to be ending their fighting, and I’m making them have the same result.
And for that, I am ashamed.
ROLLED 2; failed the Trial; wounds started to fester.
My steps faltered when I was able to pick myself back up from where I’d collapsed. I felt the tear of my skin inside my boots and I knew without checking that my lower legs were festering. The telltale burn was all I needed as a reminder of the fear I’d felt when the murky water in the trench had managed to seep through cheap cardboard soles and cloth and the mix of death and living mess seeped into the bleeding punctures on my legs. Infection wasn’t a gamble of ‘if’, it was one of ‘when’.
I’m not ashamed to say that I wept.
Wet, keening sobs were forced out of my body when I came upon the Horizon’s Monolith and collapsed in front of the slick obsidian. Figures glinted inside of the monolith, and my bloodshot eyes could not look away from them. I couldn’t even force myself to blink as sand whipped into my pained eyes. I could feel the figures inside the obsidian talking but I couldn’t hear them.
I could feel my heart rend from my chest to be weighed, even though it stayed beating fast and heavy inside my ribs.
Was I enough, in the end?
PASSED 2/3 TRIALS: You wake up in your world, having been rescued with a renewed conviction. Describe what you seek to teach people
I startle awake, a guttural scream ripping out of me. In an instant my thrashing body is held down by my brothers, and their familiar voices help me to calm.
Seeing their mottled faces, young men with the weight of horrors they never should have had to shoulder etched into their skin, I scrambled my hands to touch them. They held my hands, they rested their hands on my body where they could reach, giving that reassuring pressure as I clung to them like they were going to disintegrate if I lessened my grip even an ounce.
The fear that grips my heart from those machines will not leave me. I can’t let more be fed to them. I hope my cowardice manages to stop another from being consumed.
I truly hope it will.
chapter 64 new scene
"post new SHJ scene" option won on the twitter poll! but so did "don't post SHJ we don't want him", so i'll put it under a readmore fsjklbsjdfb
CONTEXT: in chapter 61, Yoojin originally interrupts a meeting between Yoohyun and Sung Hyunjae to reveal his plans for a special Awakening Center powered by his Promising Sprout skill. this has been revised so that he instead seeks out Yoohyun and Seok Simyeong to reveal his plans. Yoohyun's just as unhappy about it as before, but with Seok Simyeong's happiness at finding a way to AVOID thousands of helpless low-ranks dying, he can't say anything to Yoojin. in the end, they send a message to the Association regarding the matter, presumably CC'ing the other guilds+their leaders
this new scene is then inserted in chapter 64, right after Yoojin finishes checking out the Forge with Myeongwoo, and right before he goes people-watching with Yerim. the Association requests a meeting with Yoojin to follow up on the matter, and a certain nosy someone makes up for being removed from the earlier scene
without further ado, here it is!
*
The Hunter Association sent a request for me to visit the Awakening Center. As expected, their response was positive.
After all, they had nothing to lose.
“Seseong, Breaker, and Hanshin’s guild leaders are also expected to visit. MKC has been excluded from this matter as well.”
Seok Simyeong said as he pressed the elevator button. When Peace, in my arms, noticed we weren’t heading to the training room, he tilted his head. He really was a genius. He’d learned the floor numbers too.
“In addition to Hunter Kim Sunghan, the other guilds will also send over A-rank or higher Hunters for your safety.”
Yerim-ie was raiding dungeons to level up. And I deliberately told Yoohyun-ie not to come because he was still unhappy. From what I’d heard, he was acting positively frosty.
If he came with me in that state and ruined the negotiations, it wouldn’t do. Anyway, he was overprotective.
“Team Head Seok-nim.”
We headed down to the parking lot, Kim Sunghan joining us on the way, where a Haeyeon Guild member called out to Seok Simyeong with a troubled expression. Almost at the same time, Seok Simyeong’s phone vibrated.
Seok Simyeong checked the text on his phone, and his brows furrowed.
“No, why…….”
Come to think of it, the atmosphere around us was strange. There were more than a few people coming down the stairs and peeking around as if watching for something.
“What should we do?”
The Haeyeon Guild member who’d called out to Seok Simyeong said.
“This isn’t a matter we can do anything about. Han Yoojin-ssi.”
“Yes?”
“The Seseong Guild Leader has come to act as your bodyguard.”
“…Excuse me?”
What was he saying? Why was the Seseong Guild Leader here?
“I mean, that’s… is it alright for an S-rank Hunter to act as such?”
Though as someone who went around with Yoohyun-ie and Yerim-ie, I wasn’t one to speak. Anyway.
“Of course, it’s extremely rare for an S-rank Hunter, especially one who is a guild leader himself, to visit another guild. Hunter guilds are a type of no-go area, so as a rule, meetings happen outside them.”
Having paused, Seok Simyeong started walking again and explained with a sigh.
“This is the first time the Seseong Guild Leader has visited Haeyeon Guild—no, the second time, including the previous visit. Of course, Guild Leader-nim has never visited Seseong Guild.”
In other words, it meant entering someone else’s territory. It might be different if their ranks were different, but since they were both S-rank, they’d probably be reluctant.
“The same goes for the other S-rank guilds as well, though he’s visited Soodam once.”
Seok Simyeong spoke in a low voice. Soodam? That was also a guild with an S-rank as their leader, so what happened to make him go? Were they friendly?
“…Thanks to that, he was arrested. It ended with a fine and a week of probation.”
So they weren’t friendly. What did you do, little brother? Seok Simyeong added that that was why it was all the more rare for S-rank guild leaders to personally visit other guilds.
After passing the checkpoint and entering the outsiders’ parking lot, a car caught my eye. It was a car that seemed specially made, but the man that stood before it, far from being overshadowed by the car, stood out more.
…What was with the bouquet he was holding?
“It’s troublesome for us if you visit without even contacting us.”
Seok Simyeong said after a polite greeting.
“Oh, my. There seems to be an issue with Haeyeon’s systems. I believe the request for a visit from Han Yoojin-gun’s bodyguard was sent in this morning.”
“Yes. But the call we received definitely said that an A-rank or higher Hunter was to visit.”
Seok Simyeong swallowed a sigh with effort. Sung Hyunjae smiled slightly with his eyes, as if saying ‘am I not higher than A-rank?’. Well, he certainly was.
“I’ll take responsibility for ensuring Han Yoojin-gun’s safety.”
Sung Hyunjae pulled a full, pastel-blue flower with layers of leaves from the bouquet. Snapping its long stem shorter, he inserted it into Seok Simyeong’s breast pocket.
“Do try not to worry.”
Seok Simyeong’s lips trembled. Uncaring, Sung Hyunjae turned his gaze to me.
No, wait a minute.
“Then shall we go?”
Sung Hyunjae handed me the bouquet of flowers, then bowed lightly. The sight was so uselessly picturesque that it made the onlookers behind us exclaim and I got goosebumps.
“My hands… aren’t empty, so.”
My lips trembled as much as Seok Simyeong’s were doing. This was an S-rank client, so I should be smiling, haha. I’m so glad I brought Peace out.
Pretending to be regretful, Sung Hyunjae opened the car door for me. Being a two-seater, this was the passenger seat.
“Ah, I…….”
Seok Simyeong hastily and briefly shook his head at me, who was about to say ‘I can go in one of Haeyeon’s cars’. His eyes shook complicatedly, as though containing many of his innermost feelings.
“…Thank you.”
Right, it might be different if it was Yoohyun-ie, but for me to take the protection of the A-rank Kim Sunghan might be considered an insult by Sung Hyunjae.
The Guild Leader-nim himself came! To visit me! And even opened the car door for me, so what could I, an F-rank, do? Well, at least my safety was definitely guaranteed.
When I got into the car, Seseong Guild Leader-nim placed the bouquet on my lap and closed the door. Peace batted at the flowers with a front paw.
“You seem a bit… idle.”
As soon as Sung Hyunjae got into the car and started the engine, I couldn’t restrain myself anymore and spoke. Then he held out a hand towards me. What, what?
“Your stats are F, Han Yoojin-gun, so you should wear the seatbelt.”
“In…deed. I forgot.”
High-rank Hunters didn’t need seatbelts. Only their cars would get smashed. I stroked Peace, who was growling quietly at Sung Hyunjae. The car started soon after.
I glanced in the side mirror and saw Haeyeon’s cars following right away. One came up beside us and the other located itself behind us.
Though I was in a position where I needed to be protected, these circumstances felt as unfamiliar as ever.
“Thank you for coming personally, but it won’t give us an advantage in the negotiations.”
“Consider it pure curiosity and compensation for not being of much help during the kidnapping case the other day.”
“MKC is to blame for that, isn’t it?”
“And it’s thanks to this that we learned it was corrupted enough that it needed to be cut off.”
Would MKC go under sooner than it had before the regression? Though it was the fastest of the giant guilds to collapse even originally.
“As you might already have heard, I’m going to use my skill for learning Awakening aptitudes to prevent the side effects from the Awakening Center. I’ll be busy just raising the kiseungsu. So you guilds and the Association can discuss this between yourselves without me.”
“I would’ve liked you to go abroad as well.”
“I can’t even leave Seoul right now.”
If Yoohyun-ie heard, he’d set fire to Seseong. And I didn’t have any plans on going abroad, either.
After a moment of silence, the light changed. The stopped car shifted forward. The Association wasn’t too far from Haeyeon Guild. We’d be there in a few minutes.
‘Should I use the Sprout skill once?’
I was curious about the Status Window of the Hunter ranked no. 1 in the world. Riette had noticed right away, but Sung Hyunjae was driving right now, so I thought it’d be okay.
I’d been continuously glancing at him, but he didn’t seem to care. When I used the skill and the Status Window opened, I could check it while pretending to read a sign outside the window.
I wouldn’t read it all, just a part, quickly. WIthout moving my eyes as much as possible.
The skill—
“Ah.”
My neck was grabbed. To be exact, a cool palm settled against the back of my neck.
- Kyaang!
Peace bared his teeth wildly, and as though nothing had happened, Sung Hyunjae spun the wheel with one hand and turned the corner. The bouquet fell at my feet.
I took a short breath. His thumb smoothed gently, repeatedly, over the back of my neck. The Fear Resistance message appeared before my eyes.
“…Peace-yah, it’s alright.”
- Grr.
Dammit, had he noticed? But how had he done it before I’d even used the skill?
“It was my understanding that you came here as a bodyguard. Don’t tell me you’re trying to follow in MKC’s footsteps.”
His light eyes narrowed in a smile. The hand touching my nape slowly dropped. As I reflexively moved away from the back of the seat, he patted my back as if to comfort me, then withdrew his hand.
“Neither of us did anything. Isn’t that right, Han Yoojin-gun?”
“…It is.”
Could it be he’d sensed I was going to do something? How disgustingly sharp.
As I thought, I should avoid using the Sprout skill on S-rank Hunters unless it was during a fight. Particularly that guy Sung Hyunjae—I’d never use it on him again. Disgusting didn’t begin to cover it.
Soon after, the car arrived at the Hunter Association. I quickly got out of the car and joined Seok Simyeong’s group without looking back.
I’d take Haeyeon’s car on the way back. For sure.
*
aaand that's a wrap. after this, the people-watching with Yerim is finally explained as Yoojin providing the Association with hard evidence of his skill as per their request. that's the last of the major changes to the chapter
as always this is subject to edits if i realize i fucked up something etc. etc.
(if there are further edits/translation progress updates i'm more likely to talk about them on my twitter than here. keep an eye on that for TL thoughts, or backread for my reactions to the above scene :P)
I had the idea a while ago "what if there was a PreCure series with the same basic plot as your average Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Stardew Valley type farming sim" and from there, Garden Variety PreCure was born!! I am slowly teaching myself Ren'Py so someday I might make this into a real thing, but for now it's just some character concepts and basic plot ideas, which I'll put under a readmore because this post is long enough already lol. But for now, here are the player character and her four love interests!
Juniper "Junie" MacDonald/Cure Orchard: a sweet, cheerful woman in her mid-twenties, Juniper inherits her grandfather's farm after he suddenly passes away and throws away her unhappy life in the city to start over again in the small town of Bellcrest. She's a bit naive and responds to stress by crying, but she has a big heart and is always thinking of others. Juniper is very social and loves to gossip, and she also loves fashion. By tapping into the power of the land, she can transform into Cure Orchard. She is the player character.
Raine Stellato/Cure Sunburst: a low-key, calm woman in her early twenties. Raine has lived in Bellcrest her whole life and is training to one day take over the local general store ("Stella's") from her great-uncle. She doesn't say much, content to just sit back and listen, but this often leads to people thinking she's not paying attention. Raine loves art and animals and spends most of her time away from the shop painting landscapes and taking care of strays. By tapping into the power of the sky, she can transform into Cure Sunburst. She is a potential love interest for Juniper.
River Park/Cure Seafoam: a boisterous, easygoing man in his mid-twenties. River moved to Bellcrest in his early teens and opened his fishery ("Fish Forward") when he was 19. He has a very relaxed attitude, sometimes to his own detriment since it can cause him to forget or avoid important things. River spends a lot of time working out, but he's fairly clumsy and often hurts himself while doing so. He also sews and knits a lot of his own clothes. By tapping into the power of the sea, he can transform into Cure Seafoam. He is a potential love interest for Juniper.
Cypher "Cy" Magnus: a surly, enigmatic person of indeterminate age. Originally from another world called the Field of Life, Cy has lived in Bellcrest for the last few years, running an antique shop/jack of all trades business ("The Broken Hourglass"). Secretly, they're also a wizard who has been trying to keep the nefarious Eclipse Corporation out of Bellcrest. They tend to be pretty grouchy and talk around what they mean, however when they get excited they start speaking quickly and over-explaining everything. Cy tends to do handiwork for fun and is constantly adding rooms to their shop/house/wizard tower. They are a potential love interest for Juniper.
Elizabeth "Libby" Pearl: a shy, passionate woman in her mid-twenties. Libby grew up in Bellcrest, went away to university, and came back demanding that the town build a proper library. She got her wish, and has since been installed as the only employee of the library/archives/museum/school ("Bellcrest Learning Center"). She's awkward around people she doesn't know, but tries to be friendly, and when she wants something badly enough she dives in headfirst. Libby is a hopeless romantic who loves romance novels, movies, and TV shows. She's a skilled writer as well, though none of her planned novels have lasted more than a few chapters. She is a potential love interest for Juniper.
Whatever happened to "don't like, don't read"? That's what the blog button's for. Curate your own internet experience and leave content creators alone? That sort of thing? Not to sound like a boomer but this americancentric puritanic anti stuff is a horrible thing to come out of GenZ.
I’ve blocked so many of them but unfortunately the people left don’t have the greatest tagging system so things slip through all the time.
Every time I make a post like “leave ciri alone and away from old men you weirdos”, people come into my inbox and go “is x problematic?” or say it’s puritan to not like a specific thing.
The thing is, I’m not here to write a 5 page breakdown of why I don’t like a thing based on the current online rubric of what is and isn’t acceptable. I don’t like the thing because I am having fun hating with my friends. It’s like I’ve picked up a shirt on the rack that was a nice colour except it says “I hate Mondays” and now I’m showing my friend two aisles over and going “now why the fuck”.
I fully encourage people to block me! I’m very open about the ships I don’t like/find distasteful. And when I do post about someone else it’s 1) under a readmore because thats not everyone’s cup of tea and 2) cropping the names out because the point is not to harass that person. The point is to have a little laugh that it’s ridiculous people are writing long posts about how they are fighting oppression because other people think their rareships suck, or saying they’re being censored.
caine the longshot: literally does nothing but shoot a couple of times and kill themselves
Me: oh....ur mine now bitch anyway some headcannons for a character that literally has NOTHING LORE WISE under readmore cause it got a lil long
They're selectively mute and mostly just communicate through sign language or just nods and vague gestures they only speak when needed and for the rare one liner they do have a throat injury so they sound "odd" to some/a voice they do not expect coming from them.
Most don't realize it but they do have cybernetics limps most of their right leg and arm. They store bullets in little compartments so even if you think they're out they're not KLHJKLJH. They designed and made their own cybernetics. Lost their arm in an accident and the leg was heavily damaged so they eventually just....replaced it anyway to not deal with the pain.
They are a master with animals and have utilized hounds/hound like creatures to draw out bounties/prey to shoot but due to the same incident that heavily damaged his body he lost his pack and just....can't bring himself to train another set of dogs so he's switched to birds.
He has specialized collars that are mostly hidden within their feathers that have a small camera attached to it. The eye that is covered is actually a cybernetic eye that can view between the different cameras they keep it covered because its nauseating as the eye tries to see normally as well as switch between the cameras its disorienting. He only removes it to use its secondary function which can be activated by pressing a button on the side of their head which allows them to zoom in and track things as well as enhance any tracks that may not be normally seen with the naked eye. The cybernetic eye can pick up the slightest disturbances in the sand.
He prefers to ride on animals as they're more reliable than vehicles in his eyes and well...desperate situations you can eat a thomas/other pack animal but you can’t eat a car. But he will use a vehicle if needed. Their gender is eeeeeh but most use they/he and they’ve never said not to but honestly they don’t really care they are caine. They also like never take their hood and mask off not even Legato truly knows whats under there (Midvalley has a 200k double dollar reward if any of the gung ho guns can catch caine without their mask and poncho like attire that covers their head and shoulders.)
Caine likes to live off the land and use everything so all their clothes are made from hand from animals he’s killed or pelts he’s bought from other hunters. Other than the jacket on his back that is was a “gift” which allows him to turn almost invisible if he doesn’t move for a certain amount of time those with very very keen eyesight can still see their hazy outline.
He has a great respect for nature and the food chain and says a little prayer for every animal he kills no matter how big or small. Even for humans, he says a simple prayer but it’s different from the ones for animals. He doesn’t hate humanity but they defiantly dislike the ones who abuse nature or do not appreciate what the land gives them. They won’t kill unless needed but if you poach animals and waste them he….well treats you the same way as you treat animals.
He is religious but it’s a very uncommon religion in No Man’s Land with pagan roots. They get very annoyed at anyone who tries to say their religion is the right one etc they rarely discuss it and most wouldn’t even know he’s religious unless they recognized the religious symbol he wears on a necklace and is carved into his guns and cybernetics. (i might actually go deeper into his religion at one point and develop it more)
Refuses to kill children of any species (unless its a mercy killing) they believe strongly in that fact and nothing even threats of death will make them kill a child or someone of pure innocence in their eyes. Thats it for now once I read the manga fully i’ll probably have more headcannons.
The Japanese pokémon website has put out a list of upcoming bug fixes in the 1.2 patch coming later this month, here's the translated list from serebii
(and the original announcement, in Japanese)
Long list, so readmore
Feature Adjustments
Additional functionality will be added for Pokémon Boxes:
From a Pokémon's summary, players will be able to change Pokémon's nicknames, markings, held items, and mark- or Ribbon-related titles, as well as being able to reorder moves, have Pokémon remember moves, have Pokémon forget moves, and use TMs.
Players will be able to swap out held items by pressing the Y Button when in the Held Items view.
Players will be able to select All Boxes while moving Pokémon or items in the Party and Boxes view and Held Items view.
When in the Battle Team view, Pokémon in your Boxes that are assigned to a Battle Team will now have their icons displayed in a darker hue if those Pokémon are members of the Battle Team that is currently being displayed.
Bug Fixes
Tera Raid Battles:
A bug that can prevent an opposing Tera Pokémon's HP gauge from properly reflecting damage done by certain moves (such as Play Rough) or certain status conditions may occur in Tera Raid Battles, resulting in the Tera Pokémon's HP gauge fluctuating in an unusual manner. This will be fixed.
A bug that causes all Pokémon on your side to faint at once despite their HP gauges indicating that they still have HP may occur in black crystal Tera Raid Battles against Pokémon with the Mightiest Mark. This will be fixed.
A bug that can temporarily prevent a player from entering any input into the game may occur if a Tera Pokémon takes certain actions while the player is choosing the target of their move. This will be fixed.
Errors may occur when someone connecting to a Tera Raid Battle sees a different Pokémon displayed on their screen than what the host sees. This will be fixed.
A bug may occur that causes players joining a Tera Raid Battle from the Tera Raid Battles search screen to be brought to a Tera Raid Battle against a Pokémon different from the one they saw displayed. This will be fixed.
A bug that causes Tera Raid Battle crystals to not appear for a set amount of time may occur under certain circumstances. This will be fixed.
Battles:
Type matchups against Pokémon that have fainted will no longer appear when selecting a move or target during Double Battles.
A Zoroark that has Terastallized and is disguised as another Pokémon via its Illusion Ability can be identified as a Zoroark by using the Check Target option. This is a bug and will be fixed.
When a Zoroark has Terastallized and is disguised as another Pokémon via its Illusion Ability, the type matchups of moves are displayed based on the type of the Pokémon that Zoroark is disguised as, rather than Zoroark's Tera Type. This is a bug and will be fixed.
The stats of a Dondozo with a Tatsugiri in its mouth will increase when Dondozo uses Order Up, even when the move should have been negated (for example, by an opponent using Protect). This is a bug and will be fixed.
If a Pokémon Terastallizes after using Destiny Bond and then faints, the effects of Destiny Bond will fail to activate. This is a bug and will be fixed.
Other:
We will address an issue that can cause the game to forcibly close at certain locations. As a result of this fix, there may be a reduction of Pokémon and people displayed in certain towns or in the wild.
When a Pokémon that is not a part of the Paldea Pokédex is obtained through a Link Trade, it is displayed as being registered to the Paldea Pokédex. This is a bug and will be fixed.
Certain actions can cause the main character's expressions to not change until the game is closed and reopened. This will be fixed .
A bug occurred for some players after Ranked Battles Season 1, wherein visiting the Ranked Battles screen immediately after the season's results had been calculated caused an error right after these players received their rewards. Following this error, players were unable to participate in any further Ranked Battles. This will be fixed.
If a player has created several Battle Teams but does not use the Battle Team in the first slot for their Ranked Battles, they may not receive the Master Rank Ribbon after winning Ranked Battles in the Master Ball Tier. This will be fixed .
When a Pokémon you caught comes back to you from another player through Link Trade, it may not listen to your commands in accordance with what is written in the profile app ("Pokémon caught at Lv. XX or below will listen to your commands"). This will be fixed .
A bug is preventing the Pokédex from displaying additional entries (such as entries for Shiny Pokémon or Pokémon that were received through Surprise Trade from players that play in a different language) for Pokémon species that were already registered in the Pokédex. This will be fixed.
Objects such as Poké Balls may be displayed in certain locations of the field unintentionally. This will be fixed.
Passersby will no longer be displayed during certain battles that take place in towns during the main story.
Other select bug fixes will be implemented.
