GQ México: Rafael Silva and diversity’s conquest of primetime TV
The Brazilian actor has stood out thanks to the series "911 Lone Star", where he plays a gay Latin character. We talked with him about diversity, how it is to work with Ryan Murphy and the need for LGBTQ+ representation.
"I wasn’t looking for it. My first day was with Liv Tyler, I got a little nervous," confesses Rafael Silva about his role in 911: Lone Star, the spinoff series of 911 that has led him to be a prime time standout for three seasons. In the Ryan Murphy series, the Brazilian plays Carlos Reyes, a gay cop of Latino origin who has made an impact in both communities.
The impact has been such that the role has earned him a fandom that in each installment follows the relationship that the character maintains with that of TK, and that has detonated the phenomenon of "Tarlos", one of those binomials that capture entertainment headlines and accumulate faithful followers in all corners of the planet. On TikTok alone, #tarlos has been used about 95 million times. But unlike "Brangelina" or "Bennifer", Silva has achieved it with a homosexual character who defies the normal limited representation of ethnicity or sexual orientation to present a character worthy of being in the best LGBTQ+ series.
"Most of my life I’ve lived as a Latino immigrant in the United States, I know this kind of life of a person who left his native country with his family," explains the actor who, like his character, is openly gay. "I chase characters with stories that do not perpetuate the stereotype of LGBT+ stories, which are always full of suffering and lack of love, and it is always a struggle to survive.”
This is why the actor credits the character’s connection with the audience: "It’s a type of relationship that you see every day," he says. "That kind of relationship is normal in the community, it means love, it’s not taboo, it’s not wrong. It’s necessary to see this."
Do you think that, as part of the industry has demanded, LGBTQ+ characters should be played by LGBTQ+ actors? Rafael Silva prefers to meditate on his response before launching into fluent Spanish. "The actor can shape the role more when he doesn’t have to use his imagination to know what the character is going through, when they know what it means because he or she went through it," he says. "There is a certain moment where that representation is necessary."
When we chatted, a fourth season of 911: Lone Star has been confirmed and could come with a wedding between Carlos and TK. At the same time, people in the United States face movements to pass laws that violate the rights of transgender people and even prohibit the mention of gender diversity issues in schools.
What does Rafael Silva say to people who are uncomfortable with Carlos? He lets out a laugh. "It’s life," he says. "What happens in front of them is reality. You can decide to see it or not, but this kind of love is real, it’s legitimate.” And he adds, "I think I’m here to help change." And with his incarnation of this character, he’s already done it.

Donovan's exhibition skate was one the most entertaining programs I've seen in a while, and that costume was definitely a very fun choice.
