“It’s cute that you tried to protect me and all, but you’re like a foot shorter than me, you know?” with jon and anyone??
https://archiveofourown.org/works/28062798
Sooo, here’s the thing. Along the way it became “It’s cute that you tried to attack me and all, but you’re like a foot shorter than me, you know?” The premise is the same but things sorta got out of hand. Either way...Happy Birthday Rye!! This is for you 💕😊
Tim was exhausted. He’d been up late the night before pouring through books on historic architecture, trying to find anything referencing Robert Smirke and his…unique building practices. While he wasn’t usually the one to take work home with him, this statement Jon had recorded, one about Leitner and Gerard Keay and the tunnels underneath the Pall Mall struck a chord with him. It felt just wrong enough to be related to Smirke. So he had been up at all hours, researching Smirke and any associations he may have had with Pall Mall. He had been successful, at the end of it, but had fallen asleep near five and gotten barely four hours of sleep before he was dragged to wretched consciousness again by the sun streaming through his window.
Normally, Tim would grab a coffee on the way to work, but honestly he was nearing a little too close to hand-to-mouth living as it was, especially with their paychecks not being due til next Friday. There was a coffee maker in the Archives breakroom, sputtering as it was. Coffee was coffee and coffee was what Tim needed. It was half eight, a little earlier than most of his crisp, just-late-enough-to-piss-Elias-off-but-not-enough-to-get-called-out-for-it 10:15 arrivals, but it didn’t matter. If he was lucky, no one else would be there.
-
Jon was in the Archives. When wasn’t Jon in the Archives? They were his Archives after all.
Jon blinked and peeled his cheek from the cool metal of his desk, wincing at the ghostly impression left from the heat and oils of his skin. His neck and spine protested in clicks and pops as he straightened himself up, wincing at the angle he had allowed himself to sleep in for so long. It was just after nine, according to the ever-ticking clock above the door to his office, the only door, the door he left propped open unless he was certain he was the only one there. (No one needed to come knocking for him.) He wasn’t sure when he had fallen asleep but it had definitely been past midnight, after even Elias had left his office and the hum of The Institute faded to a strangely comfortable silence, nothing but Jon and his files and statements. Just one more statement, he had thought to himself, wearily regarding the ever-growing stack of “To-Do” files in the box on his desk. One more and then I can go home and rest. One more now is one less Elias can ask after, the acknowledgement of Jon’s failure in his voice. Jon wasn’t sure if he had turned the tape recorder off or if he had just run out of tape-did they even run out of tape? They never seemed to. On investigation, the faint snuffling sounds he heard when he played the tape back proved he had forgotten to tur-
Wait. What was that?
Jon frowned and rewound the tape a few minutes, listening intently. There was the unmistakable sound of footsteps, faint but definitely there. Was someone in his archives? Jon pursed his lips and glanced again at the clock. Just after nine, even Sasha wouldn’t be here yet, the punctuality of her 9:25 arrival something you could set a clock to.
Jon glanced around, not really sure what it was he was looking for. Something to defend himself, maybe? He wasn’t sure when he’d decided to identify the source of the sound, but something in his gut had shifted. He settled on grabbing a crutch resting in the corner of his office, abandoned from his recovery after the Prentiss attack.
Armed, Jonathan Sims crept to the door of his office. The automatic lights in the hallway flickered on as he slowly peered down both sides of the hallway, curly hair a mess and swinging unhelpfully by his cheeks. No one. The hallway was empty, no shadows to be seen sweeping menacingly around the corner.
God. He was probably being stupid. It was probably the statements getting to him. But still, something urged the back of his mind. He couldn’t shake the notion he wasn’t alone in the cold, lonely basement.
Cautiously, Jon crept down the hall, holding the crutch first by the handle, then clumsily turning it over to hold it by the base towards the ground. He didn’t make a habit of watching American baseball, but he imagined he looked rather like the players at bat, the rest of the crutch resting on his shoulder, elbows cocked uncertainly.
“Sasha? Martin? Tim?” His voice was somewhere between a croak and a shout, halfway between cowardice and curiosity. No answer, not that he really expected one.
Jon listened intently as he reached the bullpen of the archives, where Tim, Sasha, and Martin’s desks were arranged. It took him a moment to register what was bothering him about the room before he realized it with a start: the lights were on. These were also automatic; Jon knew this from the number of times Tim, Sash, and Martin had burst into laughter and cacophonies of “no!” and “guess we’re done!” whenever they sat still too long, engrossed in their work. Jon had privately wondered if it had been set up to keep them from being productive.
But the lights were on. That meant someone had been through here. And recently. Jon was paralyzed for a moment, wondering what he should do. Call 999? Or Elias? If it was supern—strange, police wouldn’t be able to do much anyways. Furthermore, if he was imagining things, he would never here the end of it from Elias. What if he asked him to step down from the position? No, Jon could handle this. Of course he could. Whatever it was, he needed to see what was happening and could make a decision from there.
He heard a shuffle from the break room, a scuff of shoe on the worn lino. A thief who just decided to stop for a cuppa and sandwich? Well, the breakroom was next to the records room…what if it was a thing here to steal a statement? A thing like Jane Prentiss, or-or a vampire, or, god forbid, Michael?
Jon felt woozy with fear and nervous energy as he crept forward blindly, twisting the crutch in his hands as he approached the open doorway to the breakroom, the light to which was off. This bulb wasn’t auto, unfortunately. As Jon stood in the doorway, he let his eyes adjust the darkness of the small room, blinking nervously and sweeping the room with his eyes desperately, looking for a clue.
There.
A darker blackness in the black, making up a vaguely humanoid shape, standing motionless by the cupboards. Jon tried to speak, to address it, but his voice was barely a whisper, caught in his throat.
“W-Who are you?” No answer. Jon could’ve sworn it shifted towards him, the thing that looked like a head bobbing slightly.
It would take maybe six steps to get there. The light switch was by the fridge, at the other end of the room. Was it worth it? Jon could probably run and flip the switch but the creature would definitely know he was there. Maybe it was better to just run.
Jon was suddenly struck with a terrifying thought as the creature seemed to shift again, shuddering to itself. What if it was Jane Prentiss, lying in wait for Martin any one of them to come back?
He had to attack. Jon steeled himself, tightening his grip on the crutch.
Three.
Two.
One.
“Gahhhhhhhh!” Jon ran forward, swinging his makeshift weapon towards the creature. He watched the shape in the darkness shifted and seemed to compress and duck out of the way of his swinging, in slow motion but all at once. His crutch struck the countertop, and Jon vaguely registered a shattering as something hit the ground
“Jon!”
“…T-Tim?”
The shadow in the darkness shrunk and Jon blinked at the sudden brightness as the light came on, finally recognizing the creature as Tim, eyes wide as he surveyed his boss in front of him, hair mussed from sleep and wielding a crutch like a cricket bat.
“Jon, what the hell?” Tim’s voice was somewhere at the intersection of confusion, anger, and dazed humor, hard to pin down. “What are you doing here?”
“Me? What are you—It’s nine in the morning! How did you get in?” Jon felt all the adrenaline leave his body at once, and he dropped the crutch to the Formica counter he seemed to have chipped, shoulders sagging.
“I-coffee!” Tim gestured to the shattered ruins of a Derwent Water mug, an orange kayak in two distinct pieces as a coffee spread across the tiles slowly. Jon’s face must have shown the incredulity he was feeling, because Tim closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “I couldn’t sleep, figured I’d be more use here. Didn’t feel like making a Costa run. That’s second to the real question, though, which would be: Why are you trying to kill me?”
Jon scrubbed his hands over his face; of course it was just Tim. He had been so terrified and it was just Timothy fucking Stoker. “I-I’m sorry, Tim. I heard something on my tape, and I thought there was someone in here…a-and there was. But I mean, someone who wasn’t supposed to be here. I-I did call out, b-but no one answered.” Jon sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I thought maybe you were a vampire. Or Michael. Or Jane Prentiss,” he admitted after a moment, voice quieter.
Two beats of silence, three, before Tim’s raucous, barking laughter finally broke the silence.
“Were you going to kill a vampire with a walking crutch?” Tim managed between chuckles, doubling over. “Just-” he makes a sweeping motion with closed fists over each other, “with a bat, like-like a piñata?” He was taken over by giggles again and Jon was left staring blankly, trying valiantly to figure out what was so funny.
“I-I dunno, maybe? I didn’t want to just do nothing.”
“I’m sorry, I-I shouldn’t be laughing, it’s-” Tim straightens and gestures at Jon, composing himself. “It’s cute that you tried to attack me and all, but you’re like a foot shorter than me, you know? You’re not exactly physically menacing.”
Jon stared. “I wasn’t trying to be menacing, I was trying-shit.” He felt warm liquid seeping into his socks-how did he just realize he wasn’t wearing shoes- and stumbled back, grabbing for the paper towels on the table. “I was trying to save my own ass. And I’m not that short.” Another snort from Tim, acknowledging and rejecting his argument. “Sorry about your mug,” Jon continued, dropping to a squat to sweep up the milky coffee and ceramic in a bundle of sopping paper.
“Meh, worth it,” Tim shrugged, dropping next to him and spooling towel into his own hands. “Yep,” popped the p. “The image of you baring your teeth at me like a wild dog is totally worth it. Besides, now I have an excuse to ask Sash to buy me a coffee from the posh place near her flat.”
“Oh, no, please. I should buy you something from the Costa down the street. I-! need to get some anyways.” Jon glanced over his shoulder at the doorway to the now unlit bullpen, trying to pretend he didn’t obviously look like he slept here.
“Yeah, no, you look like shit. No offense,” Tim added absentmindedly, pretending not to acknowledge the fact that Jon did not, in fact, drink coffee. “Did you sleep here again?”
Silence as Jon gathered the coffee-soaked towels in his hands and rose, tossing them in the bin by the door.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
“I wasn’t trying to. I just nodded off. I was recording statements and lost track of time.”
“Ohh, so you heard me come in?”
“Kind of. Heard it on the tape—”
“Hello?” Martin’s voice called out as the bullpen lights flicked on. “Oh, hey Tim, Jon! You two alright?”
“Heya, Marto. Jon and I were just about to hit up the café. Want something?”
Tim got a caramel latte. Jon got a chai. Martin and Sasha got muffins, a very good story, and a lightly blushing (and smiling, though he would deny it) Archivist.
-
Tim was grateful to Jon for never asking why he had stood so long, in silence and dark, staring at his cup of coffee as if it wasn’t even there. He never asked why his shoulders had been heaving and why his eyes were as baggy as they had been. Jon did offer more often, though, to get coffee with him, in the odd mornings that they were both there absurdly early and battling their own demons. Tim always said yes.

Survey #343
“i slither like a viper and get you by the neck  /  i know a thousand ways to help you forget about her”
What's your favorite kind of bear? I don't really know. I just like bears. Have you ever sent a FWD because you were afraid? Ha, yup, as a little kid. Would you ever date more than one person at a time? Nooooo sir. Have you ever rebounded... or been someone's rebound? No. What’s the biggest argument you’ve ever had with a family member? Did things ever go back to how they were beforehand? My grandmother cursed me the fuuuuck out one night as a kid because I was in a mood and didn't tell my mother goodnight. I still remember being called an ungrateful bitch with her like an inch from my face, and admittedly, I was being rude because I wanted to go home, but it kinda scarred me for life. For the remainder of her life, I was always sort of on edge around her and was convinced she didn't like me. Have you ever experienced some kind of natural disaster? I've been through lots of hurricanes. None that massively affected my life, though. If you have pets, do you feed them human food or do they just get regular pet food? If they do get human food, what’s their favorite thing to have? Venus is a snake, so she obviously doesn't get food meant for humans. Roman is very well-trained to not beg or make a move for people's food; he tried once as a kitten, and giving him a pop taught him right away. Have you ever been in a physical fight? Who won? No. What’s the mode of transport that you take or use the most? The car. Mom's, specifically. Have you ever had a zoo keeper experience or anything where you’ve been able to go behind the scenes and look after/feed the animals? No, but I wish. :( Would you ever want the responsibility of being a politician or a similar position of power? NOOOOOOO. What’s something your parents do that really annoys you? Mom is *always* right, pretty much indisputably. And she WILL have the last word. Dad, meanwhile, can be pretty rude to people. I don't think he realizes it half the time, but still. It's not an excuse. What is your main source of anxiety? Social interactions. What’s your favorite 90s cartoon? Pokemon. Describe the moment you realized you were falling in love with someone. I'd rather not. What’s your favorite sparkling water brand/flavor? I've never tried sparkling water. What’s your favorite makeup brand/brands? I don't have a favorite, considering I don't wear it nearly enough and have never even bought my own. I just use whatever Mom buys. What are some female names you would name a baby? Alessandra is my favorite for sure. I also love Anneliese, Justine, Evelyn, Chloe, Evangeline, Quinn... There's a lot. What about male? Severin is my favorite, and I also like Damien, Vincent, Victor, and Luther. Do you have any subscription boxes? No. What fictional creature would you like as a pet? I want a dragon, goddammit. Idc if it can breathe fire ok I want a dragon. Ewoks are also the one and only thing I enjoy from Star Wars. What kind of dwelling do you live in? Just a one-story house. Is there anyone you work with that you don't get along with? Why? N/A Do you have an opinion on adopting/purchasing a pet? PLEASE adopt, especially with cats and dogs, given the number of strays. Purebreds tend to have so many underlying issues, and besides, it's just a LOT of money for an animal that probably wouldn't outlive a mutt. Don't feed the machine if you can. What's your favorite chain restaurant? The Cheesecake Factory or Olive Garden. Why were you last pulled over? I’ve never been pulled over before. What was the last thing you've done on the water? Just kinda swam around a bit in the ocean. It was so warm, totally like a bath. I do NOT miss that sun poisoning, though. Are you cool with swimming in a lake? I think I'd do it if someone invited me to, and the lake didn't look filthy, of course. Do you have a drone? No. What's your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant? We have this tiny, local Mexican place that's really good. I don't know the name of it, and I wouldn't share it for obvious reasons. What do you order from there? Chips and salsa of course, along with a shrimp and cheese quesadilla, and finally their cheesy rice. What's your favorite ice-cream flavor? Depending on my mood, it bounces between vanilla with chocolate syrup or just plain chocolate. Do you have any t-shirts from any local businesses? No. Do you listen to any talk shows or podcasts? I used to listen to Mark, Bob, and Wade's podcast, but I'm like... ten months behind, haha. What's something someone calls you that you find endearing? I like "love" a lot. What's your favorite children's book? I loved books like The Rainbow Fish, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Stellaluna, 10 Minutes 'til Midnight, What Makes a Rainbow?, Chrysanthemum, etc. Is there a new season for a series you're excited to come out? Meerkat Manor comes back this summer, and I am fucking HYPED. How old are you? I'm 25. What is something unique you enjoy about the one you like/love? I tease her about it all the time, but it's really cute that she keeps all of her snakes' good sheds in her room. Proud reptile mom. Are you more liberal or conservative? I'm close to the middle, but I lean towards being more liberal, and I seem to go more that way with time. Do you watch American Horror Story? I used to. I saw the entire first season and really liked it, and then I almost finished the second, but I lost interest. The story got a bit stupid imo. I'd be willing to watch other seasons, though. Does your hometown have any urban legends/scary stories? None that I’m aware of. The people there are scary enough. What's the scariest nightmare you remember having? Let's not talk about it. Are you medicated? Uh very. Are there any apps you're addicted to? Nah. Did you have a favorite stuffed animal as a child? It was initially a bunny holding a polka-dotted blanket, then it become a moose I got from Cabela's when in Ohio. Do you still collect stuffed animals? Only meerkat ones. Have you ever stolen/borrowed clothes from an ex? Haha I've worn Jason's pj pants before and they just kinda... became mine, lol. What's the last movie you watched at home? The Shining, I believe. What's the last movie you watched in theaters? The CGI remake of The Lion King. I still don't get why it was received so badly. Have you ever had eggs cooked over a campfire? I don't think so, no. If you do drink, what's your favorite alcoholic beverage? Margaritas, generally. However, Sara's dad made me this absofuckinglutely incredible chocolate drink before that tasted like a milkshake. It had like, no alcohol flavor, which worked out well for me considering I very much dislike that taste. Are there any songs you've been listening to repetitively lately? There's a new one every day lately, haha. Today it's Halocene's cover of "Love Bites (So Do I)." Cereal, granola, or oatmeal? Cereal. What TV shows did you grow up watching? You gotta gimme an age group... but I'd say the typical stuff for kids of that time. What does your phone case look like? It's just a boring purple that came with it. What were your favorite toys to play with as a child? I looooved playing with my "family" of a father crocodile, a mother deer, their two "children" (a fawn and smaller croc), and "friends" that were little Pokemon figurines. Then there was an evil t-rex with two stupid sidekicks, haha. I can't remember what dinosaurs they were. What's the most embarrassing thing you can ever remember doing? Hold on, lemme find my book. Do you remember what you dreamt about last night? I only very faintly recall dreaming about my cat Roman. Have you ever done anything embarrassing in a dream? Thank FUCK they're just dreams. Do you vape? Nah. What was a song you loved as a child? So uh. Apparently. I loved "Dookie" by Green Day. It's an undying story from Mom about how it came on once at a putt-putt place and I apparently started yelling "dookie!" and dancing. Do you enjoy the Arctic Monkeys? Yeah, I love some of their songs. Are you going to see Finding Dory? You bet your sweet ass I saw it. I've cried everytime I've watched it. Have you ever been horseback-riding? I have not, but I would love to. When was your last piercing? Whenever I got my tragus done, which I can't remember. What did your first crush look like? I don't remember my puppydog love first crush, but I can talk about my first REAL crush, Sebastian. He's a skinny dude with short, brown hair and a lip piercing... I can't remember which kind. He dressed in an emo style, and Facebook pictures at least suggest he still kind of does, I think. Is your body more curvy or flat? Well, I'm not at all skinny, so... What's your least favorite holiday? Probably Christopher Colombus Day, honestly. You didn't discover shit. Don't pretend to me it's worth celebrating in a clean conscience. if you’re having a boring day what do you usually do? If I'm rock-bottom bored, quite honestly, I normally nap, even though I know I shouldn't. Do you turn to food when you're upset? Ugh, I'm admittedly an emotional eater. I got way better about it, and then I started up again. Is your bf/gf good with your parents? I don't have an s/o. Do you think soda should be served at school? Vending machines are fine I suppose, as I don't believe they should be free seeing as they're nothing but sugar content, and I feel schools shouldn't just hand that out to kids at lunch or something. Do dogs have feelings? They sure do. Are you afraid of snakes? Oh no! I adore them. I respect snakes and am going to give wild ones their space for sure considering I don't recognize every native venomous one, but nevertheless, I'm not afraid of them. They are so vital to the ecosystem and are incredibly fascinating animals that deserve our protection. On that note, PLEASE do not kill any snake you come across in your shed or whatever. Call someone to relocate the terrified thing. Favorite snack? It depends on what I'm in the mood for, really. Ever seen The Notebook? Read the book, seen the movie plenty of times. Do you think cussing is trashy? No. Who is the most famous person you’ve met, if any? Nobody. Do you own any animals that aren’t domestic? No. Have you ever feared that you would lose a body part? No. Do you like gore? Yeah, generally. Do you like to drink water? Ugh, I really don't. I wish I did. Have you ever had a wax? I used to get my eyebrows waxed. Do you have any sets of matching bras and underwear? No. Are you any good at improv? Not at ALL.

The Dress
part 25 of So Happy Together
24: https://mysteryofren.tumblr.com/post/618488029209935872/reconciliation
note: Elaines dress is called Midnight Cake from a shop called Chotronette incase you wanna see what it really looks like! also HUX FLUFF AND GUEST APPEARANCE BY SOMEONE WE KNOW AND LOVE
May. possibly the most anxiety inducing month of the school year. Not only did you have exams, but there was also prom, graduation, senior night, awards day, and so much other shit that stressed you out. You never went to prom as it was only for seniors, but you helped out with setting up and planning. You did the same with graduation, and senior night. You were studying in your room when Elaine came in.
“I need you to help me look for my prom dress.” she said, looking frantic. Matt had asked her about 2 weeks ago, and she had shopped like crazy, but still couldn't find anything. She only had a week left to find something.
“Ok, well do you know what color you wanna wear?” you asked.
“Yes.” she said.
“What dress fit do you want? Mermaid? Fit and flare? Ball Gown?”
“I don't know what any of that means.” she said. She was always more of a tomboy. You were the fashionista. You closed your textbook, and stood up.
“Lets go to the mall, and see if we can find anything.” you said grabbing your bag. You both walked out, and came face to face with Hux.
“Hey Hux!” you said. He looked nervous, and he was holding something behind him. He looked at you both with wide eyes.
“You alright, red? You don't look so good.” Elaine asked.
“Well,” he started. “I was just coming to talk to Y/N.”
“Oh, what about?” you asked. He pulled a small bouquet of flowers out from behind him. He handed them over to you.
“I was wondering if you would accompany me to prom. Just as friends.” he said with a shaking voice.
“Why the flowers then?” you asked while looking through them to see what kinds were in it.
“Well I felt you still deserved some gesture.”
“Oh, that's sweet.” you said.
“So will you?”
“Armitage Hux, I would love to go to prom with you.” he looked visibly relieved. You hugged him, and he hugged you back.
“Alright i'll get our tickets tomorrow.”
“I can get mine if you want me to.”
“No, I insist. I'll handle your ticket.”  he turned to walk away and bumped into Rey. He looked at her with wide eyes as apologies spilled from his mouth. He ran off, and Rey looked at you with a questioning look.
“Who was that?” she asked you.
“Hux, he just asked me to prom.” you held up the flowers, and she smiled at them. You noticed Elaine's eyes widen as you two interacted.
“I guess i'll be seeing you there then! Ben and I are going. Wish I had gotten flowers though.”
“What’d you get?”
“Just a text that said ‘are you getting your own ticket?’ if that's how he asks someone to prom I would hate to see how he would propose to someone.”
“He's not that bright. What did you expect?” you both laughed as Elaine's expression only conveyed more confusion.
“Anyways I'll see you later we're dress shopping.”
“Sounds fun! I can't wait to see what you get!” she said in a sing-song voice.
You and Elaine left the dorm. The ride to the mall was completely silent. She wasn't sure how to respond to the scene she had just watched unfold before her. You had forgotten that everyone had no clue about your new friendship with Rey. The amount of fighting you two had done your whole lives had made it seem like you would never be civil towards each other. Now you both talk casually about the boy she took from you. You arrived at the mall, and both of you had gotten out, and headed for the first store.
“So what happened back there?” she finally asked as you walked into the store.
“What do you mean?” you asked.
“I mean you and Rey being all buddy buddy. What happened with you two?”
“Remember when we all helped with the set design for Phasmas play?”
“Yeah.” she said as you got to the dress section. You started going through the racks.
“Well I caught her stalking Ben. She thought he was lying about where he was.”
“How did that end in you two being friends?”
“We talked. I told her about Cal, and she told me about Ben. Then she had lunch with pop pop, and I. From there she started going to his house more. We talked more, and next thing you know we were hanging out casually. I even told her about the kiss.”
“Holy shit how did that go?”
“Not as bad as I thought it would.”
“Is she the reason you stopped talking to Ben.”
“How did you know I stopped talking to him?”
“Matt tells me he constantly whines about it.
“Rey is my friend now. No matter what she did to me in the past I wont do anything to betray her.”
“I know you won't.” she wrapped an arm around your shoulder, and you both got to work looking for her dress.
Neither of you were too worried about your dress matching the theme of the dance. The student council had settled on a starry night theme. All the decorations were stars and moon themed. You should know you helped plan and make them. Elaine knew nothing about the dress she was looking for. She just knew she wanted a blue dress. It was her favorite color in the entire world. It didn't even matter what color blue it was. She just knew she needed a blue dress. For hours you both searched. She couldn't find a single thing she liked. You were thinking of getting an old dress from a thrift store, and revamping it to your taste. You asked Elaine to join you, and she hesitantly agreed. You both went to the thrift store that Rey had shown you. You never would have guessed it, but she actually really loved thrift shopping.
You both looked in the dress section for sometime, before something buried in the racks had caught your eye. In your mind it was nothing. Just a piece of midnight blue tulle. Still you pulled at it, and saw some baby blue tulle with it. That's when it caught your attention. You moved the dresses around it, and pulled it out. It was a dress. Not just any dress. THE dress. The one Elaine was looking for and she didn't know it. The bodice was transparent, with embroidered flowers in variations of blue, along with some jewels accenting it. You inspected the skirt of the dress. It had a satin lining, with tulle overlay in blues to match the bodice. It was a bit big for her, but you could easily tailor it to her. You looked around for her, and when you found her you showed it to her.
“It's...perfect.” she said with the biggest smile on her face. She felt every part of the dress to see how it felt on her skin.
“It's a bit big, but I can fix it for you.”  you told her while you both looked at it.
After freaking out with her over finding it she decided to take it. You both went home. You didn't find your dress, but at least one of you did. Once you got back to the dorm you took her measurements down in order to get started on it for her. You took a few pictures of her in it for Phasma to see. You were sad she wasn't going, but she's made it clear that she's not a dance goer. Phasma did agree that Elaine's dress was perfect, and that Matt would love it.  You looked at some of the shops onlines stores to see if anything caught your eye, but nothing did.
Looking at all the work that you needed to do on the car you came to the conclusion that if you did it alone you might not finish in time. You thought to yourself, and tried thinking of ways to get it done quicker. You remembered a long time ago Hux had mentioned that he had learned how to sew from one of his nannies. You shot him a text begging for his help. Within 10 minutes of sending the text he was on his way. You had already cut where you needed to. You just needed help getting it all together. It was originally hand sewn so you wanted to keep with that. Hux had finally arrived, and you had given him the job of stitching the bodice while you worked on the skirt.
“Matts going to love this by the way.” he said while he got started on the dress.
“I know. I can't wait to see his reaction when he sees it!” she responded to him.
“And have you found your dress?” he asked you.
“No. Were going out again tomorrow to see if we can hopefully find something.”
“Well when you do find a dress I would appreciate it if you let me know what colors it had so I can find a proper corsage for it.”
“You're getting her a corsage?” Elaine teased.
“She may not be going as my date, but I would still like to do this right. We only get one prom, and I want it to be special for her, and I.”
“Hux I never took you for someone this sentimental.” you said as you began sewing the skirt.
“Usually I'm not, but it is you, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have a weak spot for you.”
“I see how it is Red.” Elaine teased not looking up from her phone.
“I have a weak spot for all my friends. I love you all equally.”
“You just love her more than us.”
“Precisely, but I still love you Elaine.”
“Prove it then.”  She said to him.
“It is 1 in the morning and instead of being asleep, like I should be, I'm here sewing your dress.”
She gave him a big goofy smile.
“Awww Red you do love me.” You laughed at them teasing each other. You could tell he did love her too. After all he lets her call him Red without hurting her. Once during a project you called him it jokingly, and he asked you to never do it again. One day it just slipped out of her mouth, and he just smiled. After that he was always Red to her. Nothing else. You stayed sewing til about 3 am. Hux passed out at about 2:30 bodice and needle still in hand. Once you stopped you didn't have the heart to wake him up, and send him home. You gently took the needle out of his hand, and slipped the dress out of the other. You placed it back on the form. Elaine had passed out talking to you guys. She was laying against the wall with a pillow in her laps, and her phone in her hand. Luckily she slept like a rock. Slowly you leaned her body over until she was laying perfectly in her bed. You covered her with a blanket, and moved her phone to the bedside table.
Hux somehow slept deeper than Elaine. No matter how much you moved him he stayed asleep. You managed to flip him to the other side of the bed so he could use the pillows. He didn't once wake up. It was amazing. You had to check his pulse just to make sure he was really asleep. Once he was in a better position you tucked him in too. You crawled into the bed next to him, and tried to fall asleep. For some reason you were wide awake. You decided to go through your phone to try, and sleep. You opened instagram, and started scrolling through. You saw a post with a familiar face. He was in what looked like a bathroom. In the first photo he was holding up a girl's braids while she had her face in a toilet. The second one he was holding a thumbs up while she was laying on the floor passed out. The third one was another guy smiling with him while he helped the girl up. The caption read ‘just best friend things.’ you smiled and liked the photo.
Almost immediately you got a notification. He had messaged you.
‘What are you doing up?’
‘Couldn't sleep. Thought I would go on here to kill time. What about you?’
‘Party, as you can see on my post my friend got completely smashed. Now we're taking her home.’
‘How kind of you’ you replied.
You both stayed talking for about an hour. You two hadn’t exactly done a lot of talking, but whenever you did it was always a fun interaction. Both of you got caught up in each other's lives. You even told him about prom with Hux.
‘Damn, and here I was thinking I could take you.’
‘It's not my fault i'm oh so desirable’ you joked
‘You're right I forgot of your many suitors ;)’
You smiled to yourself before yawning.
‘Alright it's pretty late, and I'm kind of tired, but I enjoyed talking to you.’
‘The pleasure is all mine, goodnight Y/N’
‘Night Cal.’
You smiled as you placed your phone down. You laid down facing Elaine's bed. You thought about Cal, and how you two slowly started drifting apart a few months ago. You felt arms wrap around you, and when you looked back you saw Hux clinging to you. You placed a hand on his, and fell asleep in his arms.

Quarantine, Day 105.5
June 25, early
I don't usually write interstitial journal entries, I just save things up and make super long entries at the end of each day. But it's ten after three in the morning and I'm just getting home and my brain is too full to let me sleep, so here I am, with Day 105.5.
I have been on the Red Cross's Disaster Action team for more than three years now. Not nearly as long as some people who have done it for literal decades, but I've got a little experience under my belt, been on a lot of fire calls. Disaster Action Team is the part of the American Red Cross that responds to disasters that are limited in scope, one home or one building or one neighborhood. If you've driven past the aftermath of a house fire and seen people in Red Cross vests, those are DATs. DATs go to the scene and collect information on the event and the victims, put them into the Red Cross system, and deliver initial, first aid level assistance to make sure everyone has a place to stay for the next couple nights, food to eat, clothes to wear, etc. A lot of money that gets donated to the American Red Cross goes out through our hands, one assistance card at a time. It's the reason that we go out at all hours of the night, so nobody ends up losing their house and then sleeping in their car or on the street til morning.
The call I went on tonight was different than any call I've ever been on. For one thing, it was unusually far away. Typically in Hampton Roads, one Red Cross office takes care of things north of the bridge-tunnels, while another, much bigger office takes care of the south. This call was in the south, but there ended up being three northern DATs called in on it because nobody on the southern team could do it or would answer their phone at midnight. It was also unusual because all our responses lately have been virtual, but this scene was going to be so big and complex that they called for on-scene DATs. It was a 45 minute drive just to get to the location, and only that little because there was no traffic so late at night. When I got there it was a big scene, lots of police along with the fire, several roads blocked off, an actual taped off area they were keeping people out of. It was a big fire. I was glad that the team coordinator, the person who called me in, was already on scene and working because it gave me a place to start. There were four households that all needed to be processed, so I sat down with a woman who headed one household and started asking her questions.
There's a pattern to DAT calls that you tend to fall into after you've done it awhile. I try to build a little rapport with the client, introduce myself, say I'm sorry, say we're here to help, etc, but not too much. Most of the time people are barely paying attention to me anyway and who can blame them? I'm just one more person asking questions on a terrible day. Then there's a whole list of questions about who lives in the house, who owns the house, does anybody have a place to stay, etc. I was just getting into the rhythm with this woman, who was upset but holding it together, when a guy from the police department came up. This is normal too, our interviews are often interrupted by emergency personnel doing their job at the same time. I took the opportunity to jot notes, and I almost missed it when he told the woman that he was sorry but that (woman's name, same surname) had passed away at the hospital. I didn't even process the words fully until she screamed. Then he just stood there as this woman and her adult son melted down. It was her mother. I knew that police officers have to do this, but I thought it would be softer somehow. I thought at least he would say something more to comfort her, but he didn't, just stood there as she rocked and wailed.
I have never been on a DAT call with a fatality. It's not my job. Regular DATs are not trained for that sort of situation because if there is a case with a fatality, someone with special training is sent in to handle them and their fresh grief. I was just sitting there with a clipboard in my hands and watching this woman fall apart. I got her a bottle of water and a new box of Kleenex from my car, even though technically those are fomites. I wasn't even thinking like that at that point. Other members of her family were coming up to her and crying. Some of them were angry. Some were confused and disoriented from the hour and the emotional trauma. I am not a person who knows the right things to say to people. In normal times, I have a partner who does almost all the talking and I put things into the computer and do the paperwork because it's what we are each good at, but he wasn't there and I had to do something. It was an incredibly helpless feeling. In the end, the only thing I could do was finish the interview so she could get her assistance card. I waited ten minutes or so, not nearly enough for her to be okay, but enough that the first overwhelming shock could pass. I took the most bare-bones interview that I could, waiting until last to ask for her mother's information so I could add her to the list as a household member who had died in the fire.
There is nothing you can possibly say in a situation like that. On top of everything else, their two dogs died in the fire as well, and it was two in the morning and they didn't know what they were going to be able to do with the bodies. I was able to at least call the 24 hour emergency vet for them and give them some information about that. The dogs had been horrible enough. Just before the police officer came up, the son had been agonizing over the fact that he had scolded his dog shortly before the fire had broken out, and then he had to hear the news about his grandmother. We were able to get them some money at least, enough to go to a hotel, enough to get clothes and toiletries to wear, maybe enough to cremate their pets. It was all we could do, and they thanked us, and we said we were sorry again, and we left.
This would have hit me hard on any day, but I think maybe it was even worse tonight because FIL died so recently. Losing a parent is such a wrench, much less a loss that is unanticipated, and it just upends your world even if you're an adult. And I thought about how hard it was to get everything in order for MIL, how much there was to do and arrange and pay for. And then I thought about how this woman has just lost her home and all her possessions too, and is very unlikely to have resources to cover any of it. How much harder to try and grieve in that situation? How much longer to recover, if you ever recover? But all we can do is what we can do, and at least we helped some and helped quickly. It would have been worse if we weren't there, so that's what I try and hold onto. When I drove down to the scene, I played the original cast recording of Come From Away, like I always do on late-night Red Cross calls because the energy from singing along keeps me awake and the subject matter is so fitting. On the way back, I just listened to Famous Blue Raincoat over and over or rode in silence. It wasn't four in the morning, but it was close enough. And now it really is four in the morning and I have a long day tomorrow, so I'm going to try and get some rest.

Give me a moment, since I’m trying to piece together everything that’s happened since we talked last. It might be easier if I list it.
Sometime in march, the 15th or 16th was my uneventful last day at work and I didn't realize it at the time because I was called off last minute before going in.
The next day as I waited for an updated schedule, i was sent an email stating they would be closing the hall until further notice. I sat on my kitchen floor peeling off the paint of a cabinet and disassociated for an hour.
Later in the week J was also let off work, after a 12hr shift to stretch his last paycheck.
The rest of March is a blur, as is mostly April. I know I left the house a few times to help the inlaws with a few events, celebrated my sisters birthday by making her maki and onigiri. I originally had planned to recreate a Lawson store in our living room and filling the makeshift shelves with Japanese corner-store snacks, but that’s for another time ._.
Last week of April J got to go back to work to fix up the kitchen before officially opening back up to the public to allow for the 25% capacity.
Holy fuck what did I do in May.
Mid May, a couple weeks til we have to move out, find out our application for a new apartment lease was rejected because J had a few past due debts on his credit report.
They’re not his.
Apartments we lived in back in ‘14 mishandled our paperwork and sent his social along with someone else’s name (that is literally half his first AND last name but good enough for the debt creditors I guess) along with any owed past-due accounts under the guys name.
These apartments also refused to fix our AC unit for THREE months, and come to find out they pinned us with a bill to get it replaced AFTER we moved that was flagged in his credit record. Boy did I fight like a bitch day in and day out to get it all off, which we did, but now we have to wait to re-do the lease application and thus have to risk getting another hit of a hard inquiry on his credit as well as extend our current lease by a month.
Fixed my Unemployment file so I finally get a check in and stop living off my savings which have been depleted and can not afford to start up my food stand business anymore. Not to mention I lost my investors.
Last week of May I went out to celebrate my youngest teen sister’s birthday by loading her up with baking supplies (she’s been into baking a lot) (we’ve ALL been into baking a lot)
Last day of May went back to celebrate her birthday again as well as the baby girl’s birthday (there’s seven of us, it’s the only way i can describe the order of my siblings) after having stopped by the in-laws to celebrate suegra’s birthday.
Find out the next day, Monday, June 1st, I was indirectly exposed to covid at my moms. Have to quarantine for two weeks. Had a mental breakdown inside an HEB in the meat department because I was just getting a taste of normalcy just to have it ripped out of my hands again.
What happened was, I have a cousin who’s been living between her moms and boyfriends on and off for months. Apparently his grandparents, who he lives with, had covid and were hiding it from EVERYONE until they got caught suffering peak symptoms and confessed.
She was at a limited baby shower for a pregnant cousin a few weeks ago, as well as my mom.
Not only did these people put my cousin and pregnant cousin at risk, but she’s a medical assistant. Her mom is a waitress at a diner that caters to elderly crowds. My mom and sister work in a nursing home. J has to stay home now because he works in a kitchen.
These people were so selfish they acted out recklessly and put so many lives in danger because of their actions, and I’m just so-
Oh, and I don’t think I told you about the stabbing.
Did I tell you about the stabbing?
I got stabbed.
But it’s okay! Because I stabbed myself ,_,
Mid December, was getting into my car after work when I swung in my bag and it bounced off the middle console. I was gonna lift the bag as I sat in but I moved my body too fast and my arm too slow, so I bumped it with my hip. Yelled out in pain. Turns out my knife was laying flat and the blade was pointing towards me, FORGET that it had a case on it I hit it with enough force in just the right angle that it popped open and broke through the plastic all at once.
The blur of panic thoughts that I had at the moment were I hit a pen REALLY hard, and then getoutgetoutgetout as I reached down to feel a slit in my pants and my finger went i n m y bo dy and I fucking blanked and jumped out of the car and that’s when I could feel it pouring out of me and down the back of my leg and I stood there trying to find SOMEone, ANYONE in the empty street (nearing midnight, just closed down the kitchen, my coworker had JUST walked around the street corner) and I see another chef coming by to his car parked in front of mine.
I call out to him to call an ambulance twice because the first time I started losing my voice. He comes around the door and sees my back and blanches and goes into a panic, throwing his phone up to his ear and calling by any other chefs walking out the back door.
I have a moment of cognitive dissonance as he runs down the street that maybe it isn’t that bad, maybe I can go back to work tomorrow (Ha fucking HA) and I calmly lead people to helping me out because of my limited medical knowledge, I’m even able to help the medics understand the severity of the laceration, depth, blah.
Maybe lying on the gurney for over an hour all alone in the E.R had me numb because I didn’t talk much after being wheeled in.
I remember everyone showing up at once, my sister holding my hand as they cleaned the wound, J holding me down when they pumped morphine into me because I started having a panic attack as a side effect. My youngest holding my hand when they stapled me.
Had to sleep sideways on the sofa for a few days, relearn how to walk with a cane. You should see the photos of my blood soaked shoes. Ironically they’re the same ones I wore climbing through a lava tube in Hawaii just two weeks prior.
Trump was being hauled into trial for impeachment the day I finally could stand on my own two feet again.
How have you been?

(Third Film. Jane’s birthday party)
Dizzy: I LOVE THIS FOOD! What is it?
Jane: Mal made them. Ben’s recipe. Uhhhh. Mac’n’Cheese cupcakes.
Dizzy: no matter what happens stop me when I’ve had 50.
Lonnie: and how many have you had already?
Dizzy: 25
Lonnie: ah.
(Dizzy runs off laughing like mad)
Lonnie: so when’s the string quartet coming
Jane: hopefully never
Lonnie: you’re not enjoying yourself are you?
Jane: I am. I am, it’s just. Mother made a schedule. No opening my presents until she gets here and she’s not here. And neither are the rest of our friends and I don’t want another geometry book or a rock polisher. I stopped collecting rocks when I was 10.
Lonnie: hey, hey. It’s alright. Party’ll pick up. Just wait til Mal gets here. We’ll finally see the famous routine
Jane (chuckling): infamous more like with all the cloak and dagger she’s put into it
Lonnie: I’d thought you’d seen it.
Jane: I have. Mal said there’s more to it though. Not for anyone over fifty. And mothers darn near a million
Lonnie: well. 99 thousand eight hundred and 37. And a half
(Both girls burst into a giggle fit. Half way up the embankment Chadeficent is arguing with a chaperone)
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): hey dickbrain. I’m on the list. Chad. Charming. My father pays your salary. So you can take this piece of scrap and shove it up your
Dizzy: what in Grimm’s name are you doing here?
Chadeficent (both voices): silence wretch
Jane: Chad. Are you ok?
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): perfectly well my dear little girl
(Their eyes glow black. Jane gulps and rushes back to the others)
Jane: something’s wrong with chad!
Lonnie and Dizzy: what’s right with him?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): none of you belong here. Not at court. Not as nobility. Not as anything else but housewives. And you “cousin” shouldn’t have left the poverty line. And I’m gonna make sure you bitches pay with your second class lives.
Lonnie: on with the misogyny full force then eh?
Dizzy and Jane: apparently.
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): it’s your bday isn’t it?
Jane (hesitantly): yes?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): has mom sent you something?
Jane: a handmade dress.
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): I have something better
(He pulls out the wand. Everyone else takes a step back in shock)
Jane: it was you
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): not just him
(They split apart and Maleficent stands before Jane. She’s grinning like the madwoman she is)
Maleficent: did you really think he had the brains to pull it off
Dizzy: where are my parents
Chad: who gives a flying fuck? Ones a whore and ones a half formed freak. They deserve what they’re gonna get.
Jane: run. EVERYBODY RUN. GET AWAY WHILE YOU CAN
Maleficent: thought you’d say that. Oh. Someone gave you a compact mirror. Lovely.
(She points at the present table and glass shards start shooting out sending everyone into a panic. Lonnie hoists dizzy up and the three girls run to the shore of the lake)
Dizzy: no wait stop. I can’t swim.
Lonnie: you’ve been. Here for a year!
Dizzy: they asked if I wanted lessons I said no.
Jane: that worked out well.
(Lonnie puts Dizzy down and turns to face her)
Lonnie: Dizzy I promise. I won’t let go. But you have got to trust. Do you?
Dizzy: yes
Jane: jump!
(They all dive into the lake, Dizzy clinging on to Lonnie for dear life. Jane’s eyes glow periwinkle blue and suddenly their standing on the lakes floor)
Dizzy: what happened?
Jane: magic. It’s a wonderful thing. In the right hand.
Lonnie: and right now one of the most powerful magical relics is in the hands of chad and Maleficent. We have to warn them. Ben at the very least needs to know.
(Back on the embankment chad hasn’t been paying attention to a single thing the girls have been doing. Instead he’s been scratching his skull with the wand)
Chad: ooh. I know what to do. Happy birthday Janey
(This is when “happy birthday happens. After the song he just stands there dumbly)
Chad: where’d everybody go?
Maleficent: never mind that. We must make haste to the palace. We must find the king if you ever want the throne
Chad: yay! (Maleficent’s takes control of his body) oof must ya do that every goddamn time? (Maleficent’s voice) it’s amusing to me.
(They disappear in a swirl of black smoke. Under the lake Jane’s been listening in on the conversation)
Jane: Ok they’ve gone. Dizzy. Lonnie. Be careful. When we break the surface you might get a head rush. It’ll pass. Fight it.
Lonnie: ok. Sure. Makes sense
Dizzy: can’t you just teleport us to land?
Jane: oh yeah. Didn’t think about it
(With a flash of periwinkle blue smoke the three are back on land. Dizzy immediately runs up to the food table and starts kissing it)
Dizzy: oh land I’ve missed you so
Lonnie: it was barely ten minutes
Dizzy: it was 10 minutes too long! Jane what are you doing
Jane: calling the king. Ben? Hi yes. Chad has the wand. He’s possessed-you know? Does anyone else know? Mal and the others. Ok. We’re in safe hands. Just stay in your office. No. No ones dead. Well. No one else. Well. Not yet. Rendezvous at your office? Perfect. Bye.
(She ends the call and starts going through the present table)
Dizzy: what are you doing?
Jane: looking for something (to herself) come on Abigail. You were my favourite babysitter. Come through for me. Do not leave me high and dry. AHA YES!
Lonnie and Dizzy: what?
Jane (turning around to show them): water bazooka
Dizzy: and what’s that going to do?
Jane (already wading back into the lake): help us. This lake is magic. You come into contact with it and any spell you were put under is removed.
Dizzy: so what? We’re gonna beat chad via a water gun fight?
Jane: bazooka. And sort of. If the others are put under, we shoot em with this and they’ll wake up. In theory.
Lonnie: ok that’s all well and good but it’s your mothers wand. The magic will only last until midnight.
Jane: my mother’s wand is being influenced by the mistress of all evil. Aka the first one to be revived from death 23 years ago
Lonnie (realising): oh crap. So our friends are our best shot basically.
Dizzy: as always.
(In Ben’s office, he’s enacting the protocols when Audrey skips in)
Audrey: it took forever but I finally found something for Jane. Carlos let me use the 3D printer and I made her a wand of her very own. It’s not magic but I think she might like it.
Ben: you need to get back to your room
Audrey: what? No
Ben: the party’s cancelled, go back to your room. I don’t want to use magic on you but I will if I have to. So please go back to your room!
Audrey: Florian you’re not making any sense
Ben (taken aback): you’ve never called me Florian before
Audrey: you’ve never not made any sense before. So what’s. Happening?
Ben: chad has the wand. And he’s possessed by Maleficent. We don’t know what he wants so the entire kingdom is going on lockdown until he’s stopped.
Audrey: oh no. Oh nononononononono. Oh it’s all my fault. I did this. I drove him to it
(She keeps rambling. Ben tries to get through to her but to no avail. Until he slaps her around the face)
Audrey: OW! That really hurt
Ben: I’m sorry you weren’t making any sense and I didn’t know best else to do and Carlos once did that to me and it worked and I’m so sorry
Audrey: s’ok. I probably would’ve done the same thing.
Ben: what do you mean it was your fault
Audrey: I dumped chad last night.
Ben: what?
Audrey: he was being a dick. Said I couldn’t hang out with Mal anymore. He tried to stop me from leaving. So I dumped him. And your eyes are glowing again.
(Ben blinks hard three times and the glowing stops)
Ben: sorry about that. And it’s not your fault. It’s his. Never apologise for knowing your own worth
Audrey: which is what you did when you broke up with
Ben: ah. Did I ever apologise for that?
Audrey: no. And you were right not to. I was a bitch. I still see murder in Evie’s eyes sometimes. And I deserve it. I sicced chad on Carlos. I’m surprised you didn’t have me executed
Ben: well Evie did suggest (laughing) ow
(Audrey just playfully slapped him on the arm)
Audrey: now we’re even
Ben: not yet. Ici tu vas madame
(He hands her a shot glass of wine)
Audrey: Pourquoi merci, gentil monsieur
(They down each glass in one. And promptly cough it back up)
Audrey: aw that’s. That’s bad.
Ben: haha yeah.
Audrey: why do we drink this again?
Ben: cause we’re french?
Audrey: possibly. (She looks at the bottle) and it’s out of date. Where’d you get it.
Ben: mom gave it to me. Said she was keeping it for her fiftieth wedding anniversary. That statement aged well.
Audrey: bin?
Ben: bin.
(He throws the bottle away
Ben: now you should really get back to your room. Activate the protocols Mal made. You should be safe
Audrey: ok.
(She leaves)
Ben: oh and hey. Don’t blame yourself for what Chad’s doung. He’s always been a dick. No one changes anyone. We change ourselves. He’s just done it wrong.
Audrey: sure. (To herself) then why do I feel like I’m still to blame?
(This is when “what if” happens)
(Elsewhere the six vks have just gone through the barrier into the island. And Mal is young again)
Mal: well that was surprisingly easy
Celia: it always is. Then the bullshittery happens.
Evie: explain.
Celia: your majesty. Chancellor. Follow me to your fathers lair.
Evie: this is gonna suck for me personally isn’t it?
Mal and Celia: probably
Carlos: hey mom. What do we do when you’re off on you feel good movie of the year thing?
Celia: my fathers arcade. I thought it’d be obvious
Carlos: yeah. You’d think.
Jay: there is a photobooth there you know?
Carlos: at your lead then
Gil: what about our bikes?
Celia: again. My fathers arcade. Oh so simple Legume
Gil: well not to me! I’m not Cj.
Evie: don’t mention that bitch Gil. Please. It’s like candy man. Say it enough it’ll show up.
Gil: I used to think that too. But brother said it’s an old legend and therefore not true
Mal: let him live, sis.
(Evie snarls)
Celia: c’mon end ladies we are burning daylight
(The wiz split up. The girls going to the lair. The boys going to the arcade. None of them see Harriet in the shadows drinking watching them and knocking back a hip flask. Back in Auradon a black cloud of smoke is descending across the land. And Doug is trying to comfort the twins)
Doug: it’s ok. Just stay here. I’ll get the blanket.
Squeaky: whas happening?
Doug: someone that doesn’t like us is trying to hurt us. But don’t worry. I won’t let them get to you.
The twins: ok.
(Around the the house is covered in blackness. The curse has reached them. The front door is blasted off its hinges)
Doug: I’ll protect you. I swear it. (To himself) ohh this is so “Harry Potterish” it’s disturbing
(He grabs a steak knife from the kitchen, deadbolts the door to the workshop, not noticing the smoke has already made contact with the twins, and runs to the front door. Chadeficent is standing there. He charges at them but they use magic to slam him into a wall and keep him there suspended two feet above the floor)
Doug: I always knew you were a dick! I just didn’t think you were this much of a dick
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): that’s pretty big talk coming from a dude with a ponytail. What should I do with him? Sleep is too good for a half breed (Maleficent’s voice) it is your choice my child. He is your enemy after (Chad’s voice, happy) ooh. You’re right ARGH
(Doug has just kicked them in the crotch. This makes them lose concentration and Doug drops to the ground)
Doug: yeah, not only are you a dick. But you have a dick. So. Byee
(He runs to the kitchen deadbolting the door as he goes. He turns around )
Chadeficent (both voices): boo
(They grab him by the neck and throw him through the wall. He lands on Evie’s worktop, smashing it in two)
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): I think I know what to do now
Doug (chuckling through bloodied teeth): what? What could you possibly do that you haven’t already done to me?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): I was ya roommate. I’ve read ya journal
Doug (terrified): no. No. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(The smoke knocks him out. And he wakes up in a bathroom at the shool. Chadeficent is staring at him through the full length bathroom mirror. Behind them is Doug’s unconscious body laid out almost peacefully on the floor)
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): see now this what you deserve.
Doug: HELP. HELP. HELP ME. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): oh c’mon dwarf you know that won’t work. They can’t hear you. You’re mute. Like you should be. Just like your idiot father.
(Doug looks like he’s going to throw up)
Doug: why. Why are you doing this
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): because Ben is wrong. Women and half breeds and and fairies and djins have no place at court. Not in this world. Not in my world. Ooh. Someone’s coming. Best hide. You know what we’re like. How we don’t take well to the different.
(The mirror clouds up and they vanish leaving Doug alone. Chad almost smashes the mirror but he stops)
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): that’s not how we do things. We gloat. And let them suffer. (Chad’s whiny voice) oh but whyuh? (Maleficent’s voice) because. Sooner or later they’ll come back. And he can see her heart break. (Chad’s voice) oooh. I like that. (Maleficent’s voice) come on now dear. Let’s face the king
(Back on the island the girls have just arrived at the lair. And Hadie is making his way to the door)
Hadie (opening the door to the lair): hello boys. Uh ha ha. You’re not Anthony and Grayson.
Mal (smugly): 🎶told ya🎶
Evie (slowly getting more high pitched): I was fourteen I was an idiot and no straight person has a gaydar!
Mal: then why did you say you did?
Evie: BECAUSE I WAS FOURTEEN AND AS I SAID I WAS AN IDIOT
Celia: now we’ve gotten that out of the way. Hadie. Meet your kid sisters. They’re here to see the big man
Hadie: Iris? Hestia?
Mal: I dunno who those people are but I’m Mal. She’s Evie. Where’s our father?
Hadie: dea uh dealing with, stuff. What did Maleficent do this time. I swear if she touched either of you
(He lets through the door)
Mal: ooh I like you
Hadie: right back atcha kid
Mal (chuckling sarcastically): ohhhh. I’m eighteen.
Hadie: so you can’t drink
Mal: ah I never said that
Hadie: beer or wine?
Mal: yes please
(They don’t notice that Evie’s sunk down behind a pillar)
Hadie: alrighty then. Dads asleep. Hangover
Mal: of course
Hadie: if you want my help just ask. Loving the highlights by the way.
Mal: I like having a big brother
(Mal goes to the couch where Hades is supposedly sleeping. She almost gets the ember from the coffee table. But hades grabs her hand)
Mal (chuckling nervously): aha. Hey dad?
Hades: Iris? IRIS!!!!
(He pulls her into a crushing bear hug)
Hades (maniacally): HAHAHAHAHAHA
Mal: AHAHAHAHAHAH
Hades: oh I’m so glad to see you. Oh my me I thought I’d killed all four of you. Tell me. Your sister. The boys. Are they ok?
Mal (strained because she’s being crushed by the hug): stop. Hugging me. (He lets her go). Evie’s fine. She’s got soot streaks, she’s hiding behind the pillar at the entrance, don’t think I didn’t see you chicken out E, and she’s insisting I’m wrong. Excuse me. Ahem. HA! I WAS RIGHT. YOU WERE WRONG. HAHA! Where was I? Oh yeah. Ben’s hair is fully purple and he’s growing wings. And jay’s ass, though apparently a tiny bit bruised, or so he says, I don’t really wanna know, is fine. Doug is also fine. We’re good. We’re all good.
Hades: and your brother?
Mal: right behind me. Daydrunk in the satin robe that doesn’t reach his knees
Hadie: I made it when I was 16. Growth spurts.
Mal: ahhh
Hades: your other brother. Probably know him. That doug boy stabbed him last year. Somewhere very tender and bruisable
(His voice drowns out as Mal realises in horror what he means)
Hades: ...I was gonna call him Icarus but his sister on his fathers side, paychotically vile little thing, named him after herself. Harry. I think. Harry Hook. Yeah?
Hadie: yeah. Yah. Yes. Harriet is such a bitch. First child born here. Thinks it gives her a tight to act like a Hera disciple. Oh dear
(Mal’s fainted. Her father and brother put her on the couch and Evie gets over herself and emerges from behind the pillar)
Evie: tell me she’s wrong. Tell me your lying. Tell me that thing, isn’t my brother.
Hades: I don’t lie Hest
Evie: MY NAME IS NOT HESTIA. MY NAME IS EVIE GRIMHILDE. MY MOTHER IS THE EVIL QUEEN. SHE PAID A MALE PROSTITUTE TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH HER EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO And KILLED HIM WHEN SHE FOUND OUT SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH ME. THAT IS IT. THAT IS MU HISTORY. I AM NOT THE BASTARD DAUGHTER OF A MORTALISED GOD.
Hades: your mother is a cheapskate (he changes from Sebastian Stan to John Barrowman) and as you can see my dear, I’m very much alive.
Hadie: she’s waking up. You ok kid?
Mal: what happened
Hades: you fainted when I told you Harry hook is your brother.
Mal: oh. Well. I would’ve guessed it eventually. Gods are whores. He’s a whore. It balances out
Hades: thank you for summarising our history so succinctly.
Mal: well it’s true. And why don’t you look like me
Hades: oh. Right. Um. (he changes from John Barrowman to Jesse L Martin) hello heh heh
(He smiles nervously)
Mal: Ahhh. Now that makes sense. And I didn’t faint because of the revelation. Though that is a nauseating concept. My fiancé’s in trouble. I have to get back home.
Hades: of course. Take the ember. It can help. Gods are a step above genie. So if you two Ben and Jay use it together you can burn him from the inside. Uh be careful though. You’re only half god. The boys aren’t even a millionth. It could backfire. Conflagrantly.
Mal: eh. That’s par the course for our plans. C’mon sis
(She start to leave with the other two in tow. But Evie throws out her arm to stop her)
Evie: nuh uh. We’re not going anywhere until we get answers. He owes us that much
(At the docks Facillier is taking a lunch break stroll. A huge plume of water shoots upwards and back down onto the pier drenching him. When the water dissipates Uma’s kneeling in front of him craddiling the barnacle covered Harry in a Pieta pose)
Uma: help me. Please dad. Help me
(In the forest back in Auradon the girls are slowly making progress)
Dizzy: I’m bored
Jane: well I’m sorry Dizz but he’s probably exkecting magic or a vehicle. So you’ll just have to be patient.
Dizzy: There’s not even any food.
Lonnie: time sensitive mission kiddo
Dizzy: I’m nearly fourteen.
Lonnie: meaning.
Dizzy: I want you to teach me how to fight.
Lonnie: really? Well. First things first. Movies. Books. Tv. Forget it. Improper practice. Not conducive to what we need to do. You gotta be gentle. But at the same time. You gotta be tough.
Dizzy: well that’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one
(This is when “lesson number one” happens. Back in Auradon Ben is practicing the violin. This is when “human” happens)

Oh fun! Things you said mini fic? 11 or 20?💕💕💕
MM OKAY SO! Ever since I first started writing kl fic I had this idea for a fake relationship AU. I never managed to complete the plot of it so it never got written, but I’ve always wanted to write one particular scene from it, and when I got this I jumped on the chance to write it!!!
Background on the fic: fake dating AU. Lance’s brother is getting married, and they’re out of town for a long weekend for the wedding. Hunk was invited, and with that Lance and him brought Keith and Pidge as their plus-ones.
When they get there, they find out that Keith and Lance’s exes were invited to the wedding too--what’s worse, they’re attending the wedding as a couple. Keith makes the executive decision that the both of them are going to fake date and be obnoxiously in love to make them jealous. Hijinks ensue, along with feelings, the latter of which are under the cut!
Send me a ship with one of these and I’ll write a mini fic
11. Things you said when you were drunk
Preview: Keith liked to think that the phrase had been better formed in his head, but what came out ended up being, “I thought vodka crans were a Sad Lance Drink.”
Lance huffed a humourless laugh. “Well, you’re lookin’ at a Sad Lance Lance, buddy.”
CW: drinking/drunkenness, (American) underage drinking, mentions of vomit
Keith had never imagined being a fake boyfriend to be more effort than being a real one had ever been. Then again, he’d been a bit foolish to assume that anything could be easy when it involved Lance McClain.
But because Lance’s family wasn’t privy to their little secret, it meant that when the wedding party lost the Nuisance of Honour, the immediate suggestion from Lance’s mother was that Keith, as Lance’s Real Boyfriend™, lead the charge on the search efforts. And come one A.M., it meant that Keith made the call to relieve the others of their duty, and to continue the search alone.
And yes, it might’ve been Keith’s decision to start this fake relationship in the first place. But it didn’t give Lance permission to go AWOL past midnight, on the night before the wedding, when the two of them had to wake up at fucking seven o’clock tomorrow. But the world didn’t trade in the currency of ‘should’s, and that’s why Keith was riding the elevator down to the front lobby at half-past one instead of sinking back into the plush sheets of the king-sized bed waiting for him 25, 26, now 27 floors above.
At this point, he was about ready to tell the concierge to phone the police about a missing person, then fuck off and go to bed. He indulged in the fantasy of shucking this mess off onto somebody else, as he stomped up towards the front desk—squinting his eyes to contend with the reflection of the chandelier against the counter’s polished brass. Turning his head askance as he passed the hotel bar—
Wait. He froze in his tracks. The bar.
It was so obvious he could’ve smacked himself—they’d checked the fucking pool in the first ten minutes of the search, and they didn’t think of the bar?!—but he focused what little energy he had left on diverting his path, moving close enough to peer past the glass into the darkened room, and locating the one patron perched alone on a barstool. He raised a glass in cheer towards the bartender, then knocked back a swig of the drink—far from his first, judging by how very nearly he toppled out of his seat.
“Fantastic,” Keith deadpanned under his breath as Lance managed to steady himself with a hand on the bartop, his laughter ringing out clear as a bell when Keith pushed through the glass door, shadows falling over him as he moved toward the counter. “Hey asshole,” he called out, holding his tongue past that to judge just how drunk Lance was, lest he waste a castigation on someone who’d not remember a word of it come morning.
Lance perked up at the appellation, spinning in the stool and hoisting his glass up once more. “Hey, babe! C’mere.” He set down the drink—thank god—and pat a hand on the stool next to him. “Join us—whatever y’order, ‘s on me.”
Keith bit down a groan—he’d been here all of five seconds, and already Lance’s behaviour was drawing looks from the other patrons, inscrutable in the dark, but undeniable all the same. He closed the distance between them, but refused the invitation, grabbing Lance’s elbow instead and giving a tug. “I’m not doing that—let’s go.”
“Wait, wait wait wait—” his other hand pumped a five-finger ‘stop’ that bumped against Keith’s chest. He laughed, then brought the hand up between them, curling his index finger to beckon Keith closer. When Keith didn’t oblige, he added a pull with the arm in Keith’s grip.
Keith sighed, leaning forward until their eyes matched, until the humidity of Lance’s vodka breath washed uncomfortably on his face. “What.”
“They didn’t card me,” he stage-whispered. He then failed to stifle a snort, and elbowed Keith away. “Guess that’s what ‘cha get with these bougie-ass places—don’t give a fuck as long as you’ve got the money to back it up!”
Keith folded his arms over his chest. “Please tell me you opened up a tab.”
Lance shrugged, reaching for his glass again. “Told ‘em to charge it to our room.”
He groaned—Sober Lance was definitely going to try and macgyver a way to pawn the bill off on Keith. But he supposed that was a problem for later, because in the moment Lance was tipping back the last of his current drink, slamming it down on the bartop with needless fervour, and waving the other hand to catch the bartender’s eye.
“Nope.” Keith reached out for his wrist and pulled the hand down. “You’ve had enough.” He looked up to the bartender, who cocked an eyebrow at him silently as Lance whined unintelligibly in his ear. “He’ll have a water.”
“Nooo…” Lance squirmed to get out of his grasp, only to reach back out for him as his ass slid off the stool. Keith caught him reflexively, arms wrapped around Lance’s waist, Lance with two hands fisted in the front of his shirt.
He brought his eyes up, nose brushing against Keith’s cheek with the act. Keith’s heart fluttered, a stammer building in his chest that ultimately turned into the word, “Okay.”
He hoisted Lance back up onto his perch. Once he was firmly seated, Keith crashed back onto the stool behind him—the one Lance had offered him initially—and eyed the bartender as they returned with a tall glass of water.
“And the vodka cran?” They asked.
“We’re good,” Keith dismissed immediately.
They moved on to the next customer with no further ado. It took Keith a split second to register what had been said, but when he did he turned to Lance, who now pointedly stared into the countertop, his smile fallen.
He liked to think that the phrase had been better formed in his head, but what came out ended up being, “I thought vodka crans were a Sad Lance Drink.”
Lance huffed a humourless laugh, reaching for the water. “Well, you’re lookin’ at a Sad Lance Lance, buddy.” His eyes slipped shut as he tipped back the glass, downing a third of it in one go.
Keith turned to rest an elbow on the table, his fingers drumming against the varnished wood. “So you came down here to drown your sorrows?”
Lance massaged his fingertips into his eyes. “What else ‘m I supposed to do?” He dropped the hand, looking straight ahead.
“Talk to someone? You usually love doing that.”
He made a sour face. “Don’t want to. I want to forget about it.”
Keith cocked an eyebrow. “And how’s that working out so far?”
“Honestly? Pretty good ‘til you showed up.”
Keith took it on the chin—it was no secret that their friendship wasn’t always on the best footing (that is, to anyone who wasn’t tricked into thinking they were in a relationship.) And while Lance usually wasn’t a belligerent drunk, he often got a little too truthful. Frankly, Keith had sort of suspected that Lance continued to harbour a little honest animosity towards him, despite the progress their relationship had undergone, and the unfortunate feelings Keith had developed in the process.
And he supposed he should accept responsibility for that, too. What kind of dumbass suggested to his crush that they pretend to date for the weekend of his brother’s wedding, just so they could make their respective exes jealous?
(The desperate kind, probably.)
“Well… then talk to me.” It was the best he could offer—because like hell he was leaving Lance drunk, depressed, and alone in a hotel bar. “I’m your boyfriend now, after all.”
“Fake boyfriend,” Lance amended pointedly.
Keith frowned—the whole weekend, they’d been calling each other their boyfriends tongue-in-cheek, even when they were alone. It was the first time Lance had expended the effort to correct him. “Is that what’s bothering you?”
“It’s—” He groaned, running his hands through his hair. “I’m way too drunk for this right now.”
“We’ve only got one more day,” he offered in consolation, “and we don’t have to do any couple shit if you don’t want to.”
“Mm-mm.” He dismissed it with a wave of his hand. “It’s not that.”
“Then what is it?” He asked. Lance shrugged, taking another long swig of water. Keith huffed. “Lance, let’s go up—”
“Y’know why we started this in the first place? Like—” He gestured between the two of them. “Us—”
“I know—”
“Dating.” His hand hung in the open air, forgotten as his eyes went unfocused, lost in thought. After a moment, Keith reached out for his wrist, lowering it back down to Lance’s lap.
“I got it. We did it ‘cause… well, to get back at our exes.”
Lance snapped his fingers, grinning. “Exactly! Look at you, smarty pants, ‘n here I thought Hunk and Pidge were supposed to be the geniuses.”
Keith rolled his eyes, nudging the water back towards him. “Focus up, Lance; what about it?”
Lance polished it off, pushing it away so he could rest his elbows on the tabletop. “Guess it leaves me as the only dumb one.”
“Not—” He groaned. “Don’t start with that shit. I mean—”
“I know what you mean,” he murmured, the brief smile slipping off his face. “I’m not that dumb, Keith. Look, we were trying to make Nyma ‘n Rolo jealous, but we failed. They’re still happy, and in love, and they think that we’re happy and in love.”
Keith nodded. “Okay..?”
“But I’m not happy.” His voice started to waver as his volume control went to the wayside. He pushed off the bar to face Keith, a desperate kind of sadness shimmering in the corners of his eyes. “We’re not in love.”
Keith took that on the chin too, though it was noticeably harder to bear. Lance is the drunk one right now, not you, he told himself. Don’t say anything that you’ll both regret. He swallowed whatever protest he’d had down, and nodded for Lance to continue.
“I want to be,” he spoke it softly, like a confession. “I want to be so bad.”
“It’s not enough to want it,” Keith admitted. He knew it all too well.
Lance sniffed, wiping at his eyes. “And it’s not enough to pretend. But it’s nice for a while, at least.” Keith offered a wry smile, and Lance’s gaze slipped to the floor again. “I don’t know, it’s hard. The two of them are, like… you can tell. It’s like they were made for each other. No one’s ever felt that way about me.”
Swallow it down. Keith reached out a hand, placing it on Lance’s knee and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“I knew all along Nyma didn’t love me, even though I did.” He covered the back of Keith’s hand under his palm, holding it there.
“I’m sorry, Lance.” He’d had no idea that Lance had been so serious about Nyma. For his part, he’d never once believed he was in love with Rolo. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have suggested—”
“It’s okay. It was stupid for me to pretend that it was real.” He sighed, threading their fingers together clumsily. “But it felt real, sometimes.”
“I know,” he lied. It felt like the right thing to say—and besides, what would Lance even care in his state?
“It felt real with you sometimes, too.”
Keith’s breath caught, his fingers twitching in Lance’s grasp. He’s drunk, he reminded himself. He’s drunk; he doesn’t know what he’s saying. He eased the tension in his body with a deep breath. “It’s not stupid, Lance. You… you care so much. You have so much love to give, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to share it—and you do; you share it with your family, and with your friends. And I guess sometimes, you share it with the people who don’t appreciate it.”
“And it sucks.”
Keith nodded. “I know.” And this time, it was the truth. “But one day, you’re going to find someone who’s stupid in love with you too—someone who’s never going to let you think otherwise.”
Lance scoffed. “Right.”
“I mean it. You’re worth a love worth fighting for, Lance, and you’re going to find it. And when you do, you’ll be the boyfriend of the luckiest person in the world.”
Lance smiled softly. “You’re only saying that ‘cause I’m drunk.”
“Well, I wouldn’t need to convince you to come to bed if you were sober,” he admitted. “But I still mean it.”
“Thanks,” he breathed. “Y’know, whatever guy manages to finally lands you’s going to be one lucky bastard, too.”
Keith sighed. “We’ll see about that.”
“You’re a pretty awesome fake boyfriend, ‘n I bet you’re an even better real one.”
He slid off the stool, wrapping an arm around Lance’s waist. “Well regardless, I’m about to be one hell of a great friend, and drag your sorry ass back to our hotel room.”
Lance hummed contentedly, wrapping his arms around Keith’s shoulders and leaning into him. “I want a piggyback.”
“No chance.” He tugged Lance to his feet, bracing himself when his weight inevitably slouched into him.
“Stop, stop—hanggon,” he slurred, his head slumping. “Guh, dizzy…”
Keith stilled, tapping his foot impatiently. “Have you hurled yet?”
“Mm-mm.” Lance took a step forward, and Keith took the charge onward once more.
Keith rolled his eyes—Lance was so lucky his fake boyfriend happened to be real in love with him. Keith, on the other hand, would have the misfortune of needing to watch his crush hopefully not choke on his own vomit for the next six hours. “How many drinks did you have?”
“No clue, ‘m too gay to count.” He giggled, then whispered, “Don’t tell my mommy, Keith.”
“What, that you’re gay, that you’re drunk, or that you can’t do math?”
“None. Be like… the KGB.”
“Okay, Lance.” He pushed through the glass door with a toe, marching them through before it swung back on them.
“The Keith Gay… Butts.” He dissolved into a fit of giggles.
Keith’s not proud of the laugh he had to stifle, too. “Oh, you’re so lucky I don’t have the hands to dial Pidge right now.”
“What can I say, I’m a lucky guy! Who needs a real boyfriend, anyway? I’ve already got a fake one with a cute butt who takes care of me.”
Keith typed up their floor number on the touchscreen by the elevator door. “God, you’re going to be so hungover tomorrow.”
“D’you got Advil?” Keith shook his head. “We’ll go to Marco’s room—his wife’s usually got some.”
The elevator bell rang, doors opening up for them, and he pulled Lance in. “You think you can act sober enough to face your brother?”
“Pshh, oh yeah, I got this.”
He pushed off of Keith, staggering a bit but ultimately gaining his footing. Then the elevator lurched into motion and he stumbled. Keith was ready to catch him the moment he did, Lance steadying himself with hands on his shoulders. Once stable, they brought their eyes up as one, and dissolved into a short fit of laughter.
When it eased, Lance wrapped his arms around Keith’s neck, squeezing him close. “Sorry for being sloppy.”
Keith shook his head, returning the embrace. “Don’t be; you’ve held my hair back enough times to earn it.”
“Then thanks,” he said. “For being a good boyfriend.”
He twisted his fingers in the hem of Lance’s shirt. “Anytime.”
The elevator dinged, and the doors opened up.

Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door | Mike Wheeler Imagine
Author’s Note: My first work about Mike Wheeler rings in 2018. I am extremely proud and am happy to note it has inspired many more works in my drafts. Feedback or mindless asks are welcomed. Thank you all for 900 followers, and send @staned hugs for being so nice and encouraging about my writing.
Summary: Tasked with retreiving the pizza during a DND campaign, the familiar worker is replaced by someone else. Someone new. | Reader insert, fluff, Non Gender-specific Reader
Word Count: 2429
“-darkness fell over the meadow; the once green landscape began to wilt around the party. The fog continued towards them as it bubbled over the roses, taking away their colour and leaving nothing but shrivelled leaflitter in its path.”
Anticipation is filling the atmosphere of the Wheeler residences basement. While Mike knew they’d started this campaign during daylight, he had lost track of how much time had passed since then. He was too invested in the feeling of control he had with his storytelling.
While none of the boy’s present had openly praised his skills in language, he could tell just from how invested they got in his words that they adored it.
That, or they just really liked playing DND. He was going to assume it was because of him.
“While it was still many metres away from them, the stench of rotting flesh met them in the breeze. It’s so strong your eyes start to sting and fog up despite you blinking repeatedly. You become disoriented due to your failing vision. Accuracy falls by 15%.”
Mike bit his lip in a failed attempt to hide his grin at their loud and seemingly exaggerated protests to the handicap. Most notably Will covering his face in his hands, Lucas complaining to him directly as though that would help and Dustin whispering curses under his breath like he was chanting a reversing spell.
“The fog is crawling closer and closer; the ground beneath your feet begins to rumble and the last of the wildlife around you scampers away from the monstrous shadow. Suddenly a voice calls out- “
“MIKE! Are you deaf? The doorbell has been ringing for the last five minutes!”
All four heads whip around to the stairs, where a very angry Nancy Wheeler stands in her pyjamas, clutching a pillow so tight in her hands he’s surprised it hasn’t burst.
“Sorry Nance, we were just busy since the fallen angel had been discovered at the bar, disguising herself as a peasant and she needed to help us defeat the living shadow. But since the king still thought she was human, he had sent knights looking for her safe return and even put a bounty over her head of one million gold that the boys decided wasn’t worth retrieving until the kingdom had been saved.” He explains messily as he jogs up the steps.
“In the middle of the night, your fantasy game doesn’t matter to me at all. What does matter is that if mum and dad wake up and catch either of us awake we’re dead.” She hisses the last word through her teeth.
Despite her angry tone Mike understands she isn’t angry at him, instead anxious of the possible consequences of being caught with the brown-haired boy peering around the corner past her shoulder.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got this. It’s just Jason with the pizza, if it makes up for it you can grab a few slices for you and St- “
“GO!” Nancy cut him off with a whisper shout.
Mouthing quick apologies Mike turned around and went to the front door while shoving his hand in the pocket of his sweatpants in search of enough coins. While he doubted he had enough, he could ask one of the boys for some of theirs if the time came.
Twisting the doorknob open with one hand, he looked down at his free hand to study the money he’d found.
“Sorry for not hearing you sooner, the movie was just really loud and couldn’t hear the bell.” He spoke without looking up. “But hopefully the foods still hot, right?”
He continued in a joking tone to attempt to lighten any awkwardness that was to come. While he prided himself on his wordplay between him and his friends, around strangers and general conversation he doubted himself so much he struggled to speak comprehensively.
Around his friends he didn’t mind sounding dorky or too enthusiastic, but he didn’t want strangers to think he was a weirdo or something because of his interests.
There was no way her could practice or write down what to say since people couldn’t be easily predicted. Or if he had cue cards he brought out when he spoke to people, he knew they’d already be taken and ripped up by Troy on the first day.
“Trust me it’s fine, it’s actually kinda burning my fingers through the cardboard.”
It was a new voice.
A stranger.
While he obviously didn’t classify the normal pizza delivery boy a friend, they were a familiar face that happened to be working late whenever they needed a midnight snack. Or as they called it, a late dinner.
The predictability of this conversation had been thrown out the window, his head felt heavy causing him to keep it stuck tilted down despite the fact he’d found all the money he needed.
Eye contact was also something he struggled with. Even with his friends and parents, it felt way to intimate to do with anyone. He would usually study his hands and pick at his nails, but when anyone mentioned it he’d just past them and hope they wouldn’t notice.
“Oh. cool…” The words fumble out messily, his lips feeling to move correctly. His tongue is flat, and his hands are started so sweat. He wants to hit himself for being so weak and struggling under such minor conditions. Mike blamed his inability to communicate normally with strangers as the reason for his lack of friends.
“I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite of cool, actually.” The voice jokes, their voice reminding him of their presence once more.
They spoke calmly, casually even. It relaxed his nerves a bit, knowing that they either hadn’t noticed his awkward state, or didn’t want to openly berate him for it.
Having his neck bent at the uncomfortable angle for so long is started to ache, and send a shiver of pain down his spine. Slowly, Mike tilted his head towards the person keeping his lips pressed tightly together.
The ache doesn’t fade, it just moves straight to his heart.
His throat slowly starts to back up with a million words he wants to say, only held back by his closed mouth. Regardless, his jaw tightens along with the rest of his muscles.
They were beautiful.
Not attractive like the people on magazines, or pretty like Nancy’s friends. Not even gorgeous like how he imagined the princess in the campaign he was working on.
They were something else. Something out of this world, because he couldn’t believe someone who looked like that would work at a pizza place. Let alone be interested in talking or looking at someone like him.
While he honestly couldn’t see their entire face clearly due to the cap that bore the company’s logo, but it was angelic regardless.
They had all the attributes of angels in fiction, unblemished skin, innocent eyes, pristine teeth and a sweet smile that spread joy. Although they were missing their wings, Mike was sure he’d pass out of they suddenly unfolded from behind them.
Unlike the ones in books and television, they were actually there.
“Hey, the pun wasn’t that bad; will pizza make it feel better?” They hold the boxes up slightly to draw attention to it. Despite the eye contact they held was for only a second or so, Mike is so overwhelmed he’s thankful for something else to hold his attention.
Since they didn’t mention it, he assume they either haven’t noticed his uncomfortable state or are just being polite and not mentioning it. He hopes it’s the first option.
“Yeah, pizza is good.” He swallows; taking a mental note to think before he says something so redundant to them. He doesn’t want this conversation to be in a shallow grave before he can get to know the individual he’s already so infatuated with.
“Surprisingly, when you’re around it from six ‘til two am, it loses its magic.” They laugh at themselves. “What flavoured you get anyway?”
Despite it being a question, he feels no urge to answer verbally as they open the box for themselves. He can’t see their facial expression behind the cardboard and becomes anxious they’re judging his choice of flavour due to the silence.
Looking for a distraction, Mike glances back over his shoulder and checks the time.
1:25 AM
A pit in his stomach forming once he reads its face. What impression does it send someone when you order two pizzas at one in the morning? They hadn’t seen his friends, they probably thought he was a loser who planned on eating them both by himself alone.
He was to quickly assure them he’s very popular and plans on enjoying it with his many friends, but he regrets it by the end of the statement as he realises it sounds like he’s over compensatin.
Unsure of how long he’s turned away, his head whips around at the sound of their voice.
“You got something for me in return for this not-terrible-but-still-worth-a-tip pizza?”
Mike just nods in response, deciding attempting to use his voice right now will probably end with him spilling his feelings on the ground between them. Continuing his habit of avoid their direct gaze, he catches them slipping something into their pocket.
He holds out his hand with the cash, holding it tightly as not to let any coins fall out due to the shakiness of his arm.
Repositioning the weight, he watches as they hold the two boxes with one arm and count the money by shuffling it around their open palm with their thumb. Despite the fact they’re hands are busy and unevenly balanced; the action doesn’t seem to cause them any strain as they complete it with the same level of elegance as before.
Since they aren’t looking at him directly, he feels much more comfortable looking up at them now. He notes how their lips part and twitch slightly as they mouth the mathematics their completing in their head. It’s one of those quirks that you wouldn’t know about yourself unless someone else caught it and told you.
He feels the urge to, but quickly discourages the idea due to his worry it’ll sound creepy from a someone they’d met minutes ago.
“Yep, seems all good on my end.” They grin, giving him a glance that causes their eyes to meet for a second more. Mike jerks his head down, quickly disguising the movement as a nod. They simply use their thumb and forefinger to fish their wallet from their pocket all while keeping the money pressed safely against their palm.
Now holding the wallet and cash in one hand, they held the boxes out with the other. Not only giving him the food, but offering him another one of their sweet smiles that heated up his cheeks further.
“Thanks.” Mike said simply, using two hands to hold the pizzas. He doesn’t take them straight away however, instead pausing due to the realisation that taking them will cut this interaction short and give them no excuse to stay any longer.
Biting his lip, he slowly slips it from their hand and brings it towards himself. He looks down at the logo of the stereotypical fat Italian man giving a thumbs up, pizza in hand and smile on his face.
Mike wants to punch him.
“I’ll see around, enjoy your meal.” They wave a goodbye and turn back towards their bike.
As the distance grows so does the ache in his chest. It’s balancing on a tightrope between sadness and joy, indistinguishably overwhelming. There’s a word for it, but he can’t find it.
Knowing this was the last time he’d see them for a while or possibly forever, he looks up and watches as they sit on their bike and kick out the stand before pedalling away.
They glance over their shoulder at him for a moment and wave as they ride around the corner and out of site.
But they’re not out of his mind as the word suddenly comes to mind.
Bittersweet; pleasure tinged with sadness or pain.
It’s a crushing feeling not unlike the one he felt when Morgan Smith read his love letter aloud to her friends and laughed loud enough he could hear it from across the lunch hall.
But she was a girl he’d never spoken too, just someone he’d found himself staring at during maths and decided he’d leave a letter in her locker to tell her how pretty he thought she was. Being the rookie romantic he was, he didn’t think signing his name could end up embarrassing him.
Backing into the house and closing the door he attempted to press his forehead against the wood in shame, but awkwardly fell short when he realised that the length of the pizza boxes didn’t allow himself close enough to do so.
Taking his time to walk back to the boys, he opened the lid of the first box in hopes the familiar and delicious scent would bring him back to reality.
While he was greeted by the smell of melting cheese and untrustworthy meat, a different sight met his vision as well.
are you always this shy,
or is it because the calming blue
has left the sky?
wide eyes, beating heart.
tell me, did you feel that spark?
569-4371 xo
Overwhelmed again, his mind is flooded with endless thoughts and emotions.
It takes a long moment before he’s regained his composition and can comprehend what’s right in front of him.
Drawn messily in pen across the inside of the pizza lid, is a poem and a phone number written by the person he’d felt the urge to confess similar feelings too. It’s adorably odd and he can tell its rushed due terrible handwriting.
Mike feels a smile growing on his lips, finally changing the tight position they’d been stuck in since he opened the door. He briefly feels guilty he didn’t smile at them, but if their writing is anything to speak of they didn’t mind at all.
The serene moment is broken by the sounds of Dustin shouting up at him, quickly followed by Will reminding him to be quiet because of how late it was.
Talking just loud enough to be heard, he apologizes as he tries to rip the cardboard cover off to keep the poem to himself. For the first time in a while, Mike wanted to cut the game short, so he could sleep the night off and contact his fellow writer tomorrow at a much more reasonable hour.

Note
25 and 26 for Ichigo and Sai. Because I'm in a fluffy fluff mood.
Prompts open ‘til midnight
25. “When you love someone, you don’t just stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or call you crazy… even then. Especially then!”26. “I think I’ve been holding myself from falling in love with you all over again.”
Ichigo
“What is going on with you, Y/N?” Ichigo demanded, his eyes angry, his shoulders slumped in defeat. You’d been hot and cold with your relationship for a few days, and he was sick of it. Yes, the two of you had argued, and yes, you’d both said hurtful things, but he loved you and for you to turn around in a momentary lapse of judgement and say that you didn’t love him anymore... That hurt him.
It hurt you.
You took a deep breath, looking off to the side as you gathered every ounce of courage you had and said, “I think I’ve been holding myself from falling in love with you all over again.”
It was the right thing to say.
Almost immediately, Ichigo was back to his usual self. “Is that what this is about?” He asked incredulously, his eyes regaining their usual glint.
“Y/N.” You finally met his eyes, and he felt a surge of happiness from that simple gesture. “Listen to me. When you love someone, you don’t just stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or call you crazy… even then. Especially then!”
It was like the fight had left your body. You nodded, and kept nodding, and Ichigo’s eyes softened and he came and hugged you tightly. You buried your face in his collarbone and let your fingers grip his shirt. You let yourself feel what you had been too afraid to.
And it felt good.
Sai
The two of you had been on and off for a few weeks - one minute you were on the same page, and then Sai was closing off emotionally, and you just couldn’t get through to him.
He was still learning to recognise and show his emotions, and that was more than okay, but he also couldn’t play hot and cold for too long. It was both not his fault and entirely his fault.
You needed to get through to him.
“Sai. I love you, so please hear me when I say that when you love someone, you don’t just stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or call you crazy… even then. Especially then! Okay?”
He nodded, and then ‘hmm’d’ thoughtfully.
You smiled fondly out of recognition for that sound.
“I think I’ve been holding myself from falling in love with you all over again.”
You nodded. “I think so. But, Sai?”
He looked at you then with that smile of his, and your breath caught in your throat.
You took his hands in yours, and looked him directly in the eyes. “You’re safe with me.”

""In california, what auto insurance options are must haves?""
hey i was just checking out the auto insurance rates (i am from california) i know that bodily injury liabilty, property damage liabitiy, and uninsured motorist are must haves in californa... what else?? i was reading the definition of the auto insurance optional coverages and got a little confused, for example: Property Damage Liability - Mandatory Coverage This coverage protects you against financial loss when your vehicle damages another person's property, such as their vehicle, if you are legally liable. vs. Collision - Optional Coverage This coverage provides protection for loss or damage to your vehicle caused by upset or collision with another vehicle or object. It pays the lesser amount of either the actual value of your vehicle or the amount of each loss, in excess of your selected deductible. i was always under the impression that once you have property damage liability and your car got into an accident, it's covered. can someone with some auto insurance experiece explain this for me please? do you think it's good thing to get both? any advices is appreciated thank you""

How likely is it that my car insurance will go up due to this?
Haven't had a claim in over ten years Haven't gotten a ticket in probably 5 years. But, the neighbor kid did $2K worth of damage to my car with his bike in three separate incidents. Basically, half of it will have to be repainted! I'd really, really rather not go to court. His insurance is NOT an option in this case. He doesn't have $2,000 laying around. I am looking to buy a new used car (new to me). Currently I am driving a POS 1990 honda civic that keeps breaking on me. I have had it for just over a year and put more $ into than I paid for it. I realise that I will have to get full coverage insurance (I have liability right now). I hear that is about $800 extra per year. Car insurance problems?!?! Need help!!?
Basically my hubby took out insurance about 10 months ago with a new insurance company. He had 4 years no claims with his old company so informed the new company of this. The new insurance company have been taking out the payments every month from our bank however we have never had his insurance documents off them. When he contacted them the other day to query this they informed him that because the old insurance company will not supply them with no claims info they can not cover him. However all this time and even today they have taken their monthly payment. Surely they should not be taking payments for something they are saying they can not cover?? They have sent him a 30 day temp cover note for now while we try to sort it but it isnt looking good at the mo. My question is should they have cancelled the agreement before now then and ceased taking money from our account?

""Obamacare supporters, question for you.?""
Actually a few questions. Which magic money fairy will appear to bestow money upon those who couldn't afford insurance before the mandate to allow them to afford it after the mandate? The Obama administration has already granted enough exemptions that the whole concept is pretty well doomed. Is there another magic money fairy that will appear and make up for all the exemptions they've already given? If your old enough to remember when your state made auto insurance mandatory how many fold did your auto insurance go up in the next five years. Mine went up %350 after insurance became mandatory. In light of this how would you not expect health insurance costs to do the same. Hasn't Obama essentially created a monopoly and forced American citizens to throw their money at health insurance. Given that half or more of the cost of seeing a doc IS insurance itself. Wouldn't LESS insurance be the answer not more insurance? You go to a clinic that accepts no form of insurance and you are paying only slightly more than folks pay in co-pay. Then your done. The insured usually gets a bill for at least part of the visit that's not covered and on top of that they have their premium deducted. For most people insurance is a losing proposition. Insurance companies being for profit institutions will go out of business if they don't make a profit. As such mandatory health insurance means you will certainly pay more for health care than if you pay out of pocket. The discounts given to insurance companies do not make up for the overhead costs that insurance companies force providers to go through. Nor do they make up for the no pays and slow pays so common from insurance companies. As such one sure way to raise the cost of health care in the US is to require insurance. If you got more out of it than you put in the insurance companies would go broke. Insurance companies regularly restrict activities and or penalize people for engaging in what they consider high risk activities. Athletes are especially restricted. Having a monopoly why would they not do the same for everyone? Snowboarders, Smokers, bungee jumping, riding a motorcycle all dangerous activities already prohibited by many insurance policies. How do you propose to prevent insurance companies from becoming lawmakers using collusion which they openly engage in already to prohibit activities? Before Obamacare if you didn't like it you just did without insurance. Insurance companies have had to be conservative with what they mandate and prohibit because of that choice. With that choice gone now what? Insurance companies have regularly engaged in activities to the detriment of a patients welfare in the past. HMOs especially forced Docs not only to give patients substandard but cheaper care they have gone as far as prohibiting doctors from letting you know that you cannot receive the normal standard of care because of restrictions by your insurance. The unprecedented power handed insurance execs by Obamacare will clearly change how medicine is practiced in the US and that doesn't worry you? If everybody has insurance then insurance companies will dictate to Docs what they can and cannot do as they do if Docs participate in HMO and even some PPO programs. The idea that we MUST purchase a product, doesn't that bother you? Today it's health insurance. Tomorrow maybe it's socks. How can the Gov FORCE you to buy anything? Don't hand me the auto insurance scam. Mandatory auto insurance hasn't significantly reduced accidents, hasn't reduced losses to uninsured drivers. It has made insurance far more expensive for all. It does violate a basic principle of individual sovereignty that is supposed to be a key component of any free society. What will they make us buy next? In 20 years will gov mandated expenses consume the entire budget of the average American? How do you stop such a beast once it starts rolling? Millions of Americans will lose everything they have because of Obamacare. They will make just a little too much to be exempted or the time/effort to get an exemption will be impossible given their work schedule or they will have a valid exemption or be rejected for invalid reasons and unfairly prosecuted. Sure they might eventually get it straitened out but not before it gets them tossed in jail. Literally millions will be left homeless by this law in the first 5 years. Doesn't that bother you?""
I dont understand my car insurance??!!?
My car is insured by progressive. There was a break in attempt about a month ago. Unfortunately, i was out of town and my husband didnt file a report. Upon attempting to break in, our window would not roll up or down anymore because they set it off track. Today, our whole lock came out of the door! (I dont know what its called, the place that you put your key in the door in order to lock your car, it came out of the door.) We are broke and cant fix it because BMW parts are SO expensive. Ive been extremely worried about my car being stolen and have been trying to understand my policy. But i dont! What happens if my car gets stolen? Which part of the policy talks about it being stolen? My car was financed to my husband by Navy Fed, depending on the insurance, do they pay off the bank?""

Good Health Insurance for individual?
I'd like to know if there are any affordable health insurances that can cover, at least in most part, doctor visits, low cost prescriptions and sometimes specialist visits. I don't go to the doctor very often, I can spend a year or more without a visit but I still need the insurance. I have a part-time job which doesn't offer me any benefits so I'm on a budget when it comes to health insurance. I am still considered dependent but a family health plan is not an option at the moment. Any good health insurance that is affordable with a part time job in Florida?""
Have a car but no insurance?
This is an answer I got about owning a car with no insurance and if my license would be suspended even if I turn in the tag and registration. It makes no sense as a lot of people have licenses for ID only and do not have a car (because they aren't allowed or can't drive): By law if you have a driver's license you are supposed to carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage. This answer makes no sense. I won't say who provided it/they don't allow me to answer them though.
Need help on car insurance for young driver?
Hi! I've been struggling to get a good quote for car insurance for a while now. I tried all the big name comparison sites and every one is quoting me 4k (monthly installments). I opted for third party and theft, i am 22 years of age and my postcode starts with sl1 (slough) and i got pass plus and had my licence (manual) since march 2011. I got my car already its a Peugeot 206 1.6l petrol manual 1999 3doors. If you have time you can try for yourself with the above details the quote is freaking too much. Is this just how it is or am i doing something wrong? If you can point me to the right direction that would be amazing!!""

Is the car insurance company right?
I was in my first EVER car accident and it was my fault. I was driving my fiancs car and I wasnt on his insurance, his insurance company said that they wouldnt cover his car because I wasnt on the insurance but they covered the other car and that was the last of it until 6 months later we buy a new car and cancel that insurance and get new insurance for both cars and we added me on it. A few weeks later we get a phone call from the old car insurance company saying we need to pay them back for the other car which was close to 8,000 bucks we asked them why we are just now hearing about this we were never not once told we would have to pay anything and 6 months later you call us and tell us to pay you 8 grand all they had to say was sorry you werent contacted sooner they said they mailed us stuff but we didnt get anything. They mailed us a letter saying what they policy was saying that the reason we have to pay them is because it was a MATERIAL MISS REPRESENTATION we thought something isnt right so we took it to a lawyer and he said it cant be a material mss representation because that mean they wouldnt have covered me if I were on the policy which isnt true because my driving record was PERFECT not one thing wrong with it. They lawyer want 3 grand up front to fight it but we dont know what to do. Is the insurance company right?""

Car wreck with no insurance in tennessee?
I was recently involved in a car wreck where I wasn't insured whatsoever. This wreck was considered road rage on both parts. I didn't initiate the road rage. I had a dip spit bottle thrown at my car. It went in and all over me. I followed the other vehicle til he bowed up and stop in front of me where I then rear ended him. He was driving a '99 cadillac escalade and it didn't damaged anything but his bumper. He had insurance thus he didn't get a ticket I don't believe but I did and it says I didn't have insurance the time of the accident and a court date that follows up. My questions are what will exactly happen in court?? I have never been in a wreck. I now have insurance. I'm young. What will the court cost be? How will I pay him? Is there anything that I should know other than to show up?
Car insurance: Progressive vs. State Farm?
I'm currently with Progressive and have been very pleased with their service: I was in an accident in August and the entire process was very smooth and took little effort on my part. I worked with one local agent, dropped my car off at the Progressive repair center where they had my rental waiting for me, and returned the rental there when I came to pick my car up. Plus I never have to wait long to talk to someone when I call. However, I'm newly married and have found we would save a considerable amount by moving my two cars to my husbands policy with State Farm as opposed to moving his car to my policy with Progressive. Please let me know what type of experiences you've had with State Farm and if you would consider their service as excellent as I have with Progressive. Even if State Farm is cheaper, it won't be worth the savings if their service is crummy. Thanks!""

How does car insurance really work for new drivers?
I passed my road test with flying colors last Friday, but my parents refuse to either get me a car, or allow me to drive theirs by myself. They quote insurance as the main problem - new drivers who are male and under 25 typically get insurance rates that are like 200% plus the normal rate. Now if that were the way it really worked for everyone, I wouldn't say anything, considering that I know it's not my car I'd be driving. However, I have plenty of friends who use their parents insurance, but don't pay a penny extra. I'm wondering how exactly that is done, because if my parents had their way, I'd be driving with them sitting in the side seat until the age of 25 - not happening.""

I did a little test to check quotes when it came to auto insurance through Progressive. I technically have not had insurance before. My last vehicle was on my brothers insurance policy and I was listed as an Additional driver. So should I choose that I haven't been insured? I obviously wouldn't drive without insurance, even though I do live in a state that does not require it - but I don't want to give the notion that I have been either. Hillary Care: 1) Need to get if you choose to live. 2) Government bureaucracy limits the choice of provider. 3) Coverage only protects you and not others from damages 4) Government mandates what is covered, not you. 5) Violates freedom of religion for those whose beliefs prevent them from getting hospital care. 6) Government steals taxpayer money to supplement those who cry poor. How Kenney the Tabletop Gamer Lost 120 Pounds and Found His Voice (Literally).
“There’s no way that’s the same person, right?”
Admittedly, that’s what I first thought when I saw Kenney’s before and after photos. There was just NO way that this Tony Stark looking dude on the right was the same person as the man in the other photo, right?
And then I saw his other photos. And then I heard his story.
And then I teared up.
Shut up I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Today, we’re going to be talking about Ironma—-Kenney Frazier, an IT systems administrator from Alabama, a gamer, and an opera singer who has had one of the most dramatic transformations I’ve ever seen. It’s no exaggeration to say that Kenney clearly saved his own life. Not just in terms of life expectancy, but also quality of his life.
Kenney is a proud member of the Nerd Fitness Academy who made some key changes in his life that helped him succeed. We’re going to dig deep into those major and minor changes Kenney made and how you can be like him!
After years of struggle, starting and stopping, a switch flipped and he has lost over 120 pounds in the past 15 months.
Here’s his origin story.

Meet Kenney
STEVE: Kenney! My man. When I first saw your post in the Academy Facebook group, and it had hundreds and hundreds of likes and comments, my jaw dropped. Let’s hear your background:
KENNEY: I’ve pretty much always been overweight. Even in Kindergarten I was pudgy! I attribute this to my love of Reese Cups (I’m a recovering addict; there should really be a Reese Cup Lovers Anonymous Group). I steadily put on the pounds, and by high school I easily tipped the scales at 250lbs+.
By the age of 25 I was over 300lbs and miserable.
I would go on a diet, have some success, then expand to new heights in short order. My addiction to Everquest and World of Warcraft definitely did not help. I lived an extremely sedentary life and I was depressed. I would use these virtual worlds as an escape from my self-imposed dungeon. I was finally able to break out of this addiction and decided to start living in the real world. I joined the workforce and did my best to become an adult.
STEVE: I hear ya brother – I too played Everquest (and Everquest 2) for over a decade and did it for the same reasons you did – to escape a crappy reality. What was a typical day like for you then?
KENNEY: I would wake up around 8:30am during the week and drag myself into work. On the way to work I’d stop by Chick-fil-a and grab 2 chicken biscuits and a large lemonade because breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right?
Ha. Of course being a southerner you can’t have breakfast without biscuits!
Lunch, would roll around and I’d run to Burger King and order 2 double cheeseburgers and a large fry and Coke to wash it down with.
I’d probably grab a candy bar or chips from the snack machine mid afternoon.
On the way home I’d stop by and grab more food for dinner: a large chicken finger plate from Zaxby’s because who don’t love fried chicken? I had to have another large Coke to wash it down.
After I finished my food I’d plop down in front of the TV or my computer or go take a nap for a few hours. I’d normally heading to bed around midnight or 1am after playing a few games of Dota2 with some friends.
STEVE: So let’s talk about what happened that brought about actual changes:
KENNEY: I was 35, tired all the time and unhappy with my life. Obesity, diabetes, thyroid issues, and high blood pressure are also all prevalent in my family history.
I finally had enough and made an appointment to get a physical. When I saw my lab results I knew I was in trouble. My blood pressure was high, my blood sugar was high and my A1C was in the diabetic range! My cholesterol was sky high and I weighed 334 lbs! Despite these sobering results it still wasn’t enough to wake me up.
As a card carrying super nerd – I’ve always enjoyed table top RPG – I was a member of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign with some friends from High School. One of the players started talking about Nerd Fitness and it piqued my interest.
I decided to check it out and joined the NF Academy in January of 2016. I read the starter quests, but keep putting off actually starting.
STEVE: That’s interesting – so you joined the program, but couldn’t get yourself to commit or take action beyond just reading the missions. Sounds like a classic case of not having a big enough reason WHY yet! Your doctor said you had bad health signals, but deep down you weren’t ready to change yet.
So what happened next?
KENNEY: Music has always been my main passion. I was a vocal major in college before switching to something more “practical.” I decided to restart my vocal studies at a local music school in my early 30’s.
As if being a typical DnD/MMORPG nerd wasn’t enough, my musical endeavors are in the Classical/Opera genre. The school where I study has spring and winter productions each year. I was cast in my first show and I was hooked. I was continually cast in smaller roles but I had larger ambitions. In September of 2016, I had just finished a production and felt I had performed well but I wanted more. I reached out to the teacher in charge of casting.
I told her that I was committed to landing a leading role, and her response? My weight was a showstopper.
STEVE: And there it is…your ACTUAL “Big Why” – the reason that deep down made you want to change. It must have been brutal to hear that you were too big to be considered for more important musical roles. But it appears to also have been a big turning point for you.
KENNEY: October 2016 I started my fitness journey first by cutting out sodas and cutting my portion sizes. I started logging everything in a Fitness App.
I knew from reading the articles on Nerd Fitness that making small changes at first worked best. I tried doing some of the free home workouts but I knew my motivation would suffer and I would stop unless I had some “skin” in the game. So I called up my local gym and set up a free training session on Columbus Day.
The first workout was so horrible and I was so out of shape that I almost tossed my cookies – it just reinforced how far I had to go…but I was inspired. I signed up and started working with a trainer 3 times a week.
Strength training with some occasional cardio has the name of the game since then.
At that first session, I weighed in at 320 lbs and by Nov 16th I was down to 297lbs. I couldn’t remember the last time I was under 300lbs and my motivation never faltered. I started incorporating cardio 3 or 4 times a week into strength-training routines.
STEVE: Hmmm, so what you’re saying is…this whole diet and exercise thing might actually work! Hahaha – so talk to me what other changes you made along the way.
KENNEY: I started doing intermittent fasting along with a low carb, high protein diet. As my weight went down I started feeling better and was continually amazed at what I could do. By January 4th, 2017 I was down to 281lbs.
STEVE: And that’s when you discovered the power of a supportive community, right?
KENNEY: Later that month I saw that there was a Facebook group for Academy members, which I had somehow missed when I signed up the year before. When I joined the group I was amazed at the community. The posts were uplifting and informative.
The progress posts served as motivation for me! By February, I had lost 50lbs and decided to make my first post on the Facebook group (which you can see below):
This was a huge step for me due to self-esteem issues but the support and uplifting comments were great. I used the Academy community to help keep me motivated.
Whenever I’d feel like quitting I’d log in and read the new posts and fortify my resolve. By May I was down 75 lbs and I was doing things I never thought I’d be able to do. I went from being winded by walking up stairs to doing Burpees, Squats, and bear crawls. I even started taking tennis lessons!
By the end of summer I was down 100lbs.
And just a few weeks ago, I weighed in at 198 lbs, meaning I’ve lost 120lbs! I can’t even remember the last time I was under 200! I recently went to the doctor again and had a fresh set of labs. My results were night and day! My A1C was normal, my blood sugar was normal, and my cholesterol was greatly reduced.
STEVE: AMAZING. So let’s hear about the New Kenney. What’s a typical day like now?
KENNEY: I wake up around 6:30 and 6:45am and try to get to work before 8:00am. I do intermittent fasting so I actually skip breakfast. My “feasting” window runs from 11am til 8pm.
My typical lunch is a salad minus croutons with chicken (I have a slight addiction to Caesar salads) If I need a snack I’ll eat some tuna or even some beef jerky (can’t have enough protein). Normally, I’ll head home and get ready to go to the gym! I work out 3 times a week with the trainer so I’ll do 40 minutes of cardio after those sessions or on a non-lifting day I’ll do an hour of cardio.
Lately, I’ve been on an elliptical kick as I can zone out and watch Netflix while I’m doing it. I also play Racquetball once a week with friends and I joined a basketball league (I’m really bad!).
After I work out, I’ll grab dinner with chicken or beef, with some brown rice, and broccoli (I love broccoli!) or a mixture of other veggies.
I also have a bit of a sweet tooth so I’ll treat myself with some halo ice cream (within reason) or some fruit or Siggi’s Icelandic style skyr. I’m a simple guy so I can eat the same things a few times a week and it doesn’t bother me. I guess I look at food differently now. It’s fuel for me to reach my goals before I used it to make me feel better.
STEVE: That mentality change is amazing, and I love hearing it. You changed physically. What else changed about you along the way?
KENNEY: Looking back over the journey so far I’ve learned so much more about myself. I’ve discovered that I can reach goals and that I am capable of doing anything if I put my mind to it. While I haven’t reached my goal weight, I am well on my way. I have the tools to complete my journey.
I was a soloist in a community Sing-a-long Messiah tonight and I got to rock a tux, so I thought it would make a good after!
When I went to try on my “rent-a-tux” I was fitted in a 46S jacket and when I got home I looked at my old suit jacket and it was a 56R! It’s just amazing to me! I really appreciate the community that you have built. I wouldn’t have come this far without it!
STEVE: Everybody assumes that they’ll be happy once they lose weight. And you clearly seem like a completely different, more content, and proud person. Is there anything you still struggle with?
KENNEY: Losing this weight has really forced me to face my self-esteem issues and the mental aspects are a struggle. I feel so much better physically but I still struggle mentally with being the “fat” guy.
STEVE: Thanks for sharing that honestly with us, man. We’re all works in progress, both inside and out! And these battles take time.
It’s a good reminder to know that even if you build the body you want, you still have to level up on the inside too and that can take time! Luckily you have an amazing community of weirdos cheering you on, and others who have struggled with those same self-esteem issues and can help you get through it!
How Kenney finally succeeded and lost 120 pounds
I wanted to highlight the key points to his transformation that allowed him to finally find success, and hopefully you can implement these types of changes into your life too.
KEY POINT #1: Kenney kept trying.
Kenney spent over a year reading Nerd Fitness articles before working up the courage to even get started. After that, he joined the NF Academy and read the content but couldn’t get himself to do much more past that.
And yet, something kept him around. He kept getting Nerd Fitness emails in his inbox, even if he wasn’t ready to take action yet. And EVENTUALLY, the right combinations of words on a page, life experiences, and things clicked for him to finally take action.
If you’re somebody that has started and stopped or lost 20 pounds only to put on 30, you’re not alone.
If you woke up this January and said “I said the same thing last year about getting healthy, but here I am still overweight,” you’re not alone.
If you beat yourself up when you fail and think you’re doomed to stay fat, you’re not alone.
Give yourself credit – you’re still here reading this, and that counts for something! Keep trying. Keep reading. Keep attempting different methods until you find one that works for you – though I’d consider these 10 changes before making another attempt).
The important thing is that you take action – more information is usually not the answer.
Here at Nerd Fitness we refer to the perpetual activity of collecting information as “collecting underpants!“
Don’t get stuck on Phase 1 – you’ll never get to “profit” (healthy) without taking action (that’s phase 2).
Now, there’s a powerful psychological element to Kenney’s journey that I wanted to highlight as well.
KEY POINT #2: Kenney finally found his “Big Why.”
Just saying “I want to get in shape” wasn’t enough for him. Being overweight wasn’t enough. Having his doctor tell him that he was at risk for a all kinds of preventable diseases wasn’t enough.
Sure, he “wanted to get in shape,” but it wasn’t enough to make him actually change. After all, Chick-Fil-A, Zaxby’s, Coca Cola, and Burger King is SOOOO damn good, it takes a really powerful reason to want to give up those things and delay gratification until the future.
And then he finally found his “Big Why.”
Kenney was told that his weight was holding him back from landing bigger roles while performing on stage (something he truly loved). And that’s when he decided to finally take this next attempt at getting fit seriously and actually took steps to change.
If you are somebody that thinks you “should get in shape,” you’re not digging deep enough for your reasons. However, if you are trying to get in shape because:
You’re tired of being unhappy with the person you see in the mirror.
If you want to build confidence to finally go on a date for the first time.
If you want your wife to look at you with love/admiration the way she used to.
Your dad died at a young age and you want to live to see your grandkids.
A reason like this, written somewhere that you can see daily, will help you stay on track when life gets busy.
Key Point #3: Kenney changed his relationship with food.
This quote from Kenney perfectly encapsulates why Kenney was successful in his transformation:
“I look at food differently now. It’s fuel for me to reach my goals, whereas before I used it to make me feel better.”
This is a guy who ate fast food 3-4 times per day, every day. Who grew up in the South, home of “comfort food.” A self-described Reese’s Cup and Ice cream aficionado.
THAT guy now views food as fuel for his fitness goals!
How did it happen? Slowly with small changes over a long period of time. Kenney knew that going on a crash diet wasn’t going to work (he had tried that in the past), so as we discuss here on Nerd Fitness he focused on small actionable changes he could make that didn’t scare him.
He kept things simple like cutting back on soda and tracking his food intake.
Only after he started to see some progress did he start playing this “healthy eating” game on a harder difficulty setting:
He moved his diet over to a more low carb, Paleo-ish nutritional strategy
He cut out breakfast and followed an Intermittent fasting plan
He consistently ate healthy options and go-to “default” meals.
Thanks to this dramatic change in his mentality, Kenney no longer needed food as an escape, but rather saw it as fuel, with occasional indulgences – like his favorite ice cream or candy – but in moderation without fear or guilt.

Key Point #4: Kenney STOPPED relying on himself.
Believe it or not, Kenney giving up on himself might be the most important mindset shift he could have made.
When most people decide to get in shape, they all do the same thing: “I am going to get in shape. I’m gonna get motivated and hit the gym consistently!” Two weeks later, they’ve already given up but now they ALSO have shame: “I am ashamed that I couldn’t stick with my goals, something must be wrong with me!”
Conversely, people that succeed know themselves better than that, so they plan for it. They stop expecting themselves to magically become a motivation powerhouse and instead start asking better questions. “Okay if Motivation ALWAYS leaves me, rather than beating myself up how can I stack the deck so that I no longer need motivation in the first place?”
Kenney stopped relying on himself in two key ways:
He invested in himself so that he had “skin in the game”
He had OTHER people keep him accountable other than just himself.
We’re going to dig into both of these specific issues in the next two points, but I want to return to the above:
If you rely on yourself to be motivated, and you think you need to be motivated to get in shape, you’ve already lost.
STOP relying on motivation. Instead, build systems, recruit allies, and structure your environment in ways that support your goals.
Try this: recruit a friend who will cheer you on. Give him $50 of your money and tell him you’ll check in with him every day. If you don’t check in to let him know that you went for a walk and ate a veggie, he will donate that money to a cause you HATE.
Speaking of recruiting allies…
Key Point #5: Kenney surrounded himself with the right people
I’m proud to say that Nerd FItness played a communal role in helping Kenney Reach his goals. Our Academy doesn’t a super secret proprietary workout plan – its fun compound strength training. Our nutritional strategy isn’t anything proprietary – its less junk and more vegetables. Sure, it digs deep on the mindset stuff, and it’s got a fun leveling system and nutritional strategy that gamifies getting in shape.
But that’s not what made it such a big help in Kenney’s journey: it was the community of people who are aligned with the same goal, struggling with the same problems, that were cheering him on.
Or in another Academy member’s words, when asked why he loves the community:
Human connection and supportive people can be the biggest help in transforming, and Kenney had both: a coach who pushed him, and a community that supported him.
Did you know that you are the average of the 5 people you associate most with?
Show me the weight, health, net worth, and happiness level of the 5 people you spend the most time with, and I bet I can guess a lot about you with startling accuracy – it’s because those people influence you every day without you realizing it with their words, decisions, and choices.
So then I ask you: Are your five people making you want to be better? Or are they people who make fun of you for skipping game night to exercise or goad you into skipping the salad and ordering a cheeseburger to “live a little.”
Kenney has been a major contributor to our community, sharing his struggles and his progress. Unsurprisingly, he’s also one of our BEST successes, and an inspiration to the men of the Academy group – and now the galaxy.
If you are serious about getting in shape, interact with people that make you want to be better:
Join a running club at work. Or start one!
Find an accountability buddy that you check in with daily.
Create a guild and introduce positive peer pressure!
Have somebody you can ask embarrassing questions to and share your struggles with.
I love that Kenney found the NF community to be super supportive while he also leveled up his life with in person connections too, and I want the same for you.
I don’t care where you find these people, I just want you to have these people in your life! Now, I might be slightly biased, but I believe our online crew is the best community on the planet!
Key Point #6: Kenney invested in himself
Kenney tried to follow along with free workouts at home. He read free articles on Nerd Fitness for over a year. And he couldn’t get himself to take his attempt at getting in shape seriously.
As he was still in search of his big WHY, he realized that he’d never stick with an attempt until he had some “skin in the game” (invested in himself). So he called up his local gym and set up a free training session.
And that lead to him realizing that hiring a trainer that knows him better than he knows himself was going to be a game changer:
“My trainer is perfect for me! He keeps me motivated and honest without being the cliched TV trainer who berates their clients! He’s never yelled or made me feel like a failure. Honestly, If had a trainer like that I would have quit after the first session. He’s a self described nerd so we often talk about the next big superhero movie or I crack jokes about his addiction to big Kit Kat bars!”
Whether it’s an online coach or a course, there’s so much psychology at stake beyond just the information you learn in these situations. We all know what we need to do (eat less, move more), but we can’t get ourselves to do those things.
Investing in a course or hiring a coach can be the biggest difference between success and failure for many people. When you spend money on a quality fitness product or service:
You spend time with other people who are investing in themselves.
You get to outsource your decision making and just focus on following directions.
You get the peace of mind that you are doing the right thing because its been prescribed by somebody farther along than you.
You get guaranteed accountability, because you’re paying somebody for something which means you’ll value it more!
Sure, there are MILLIONS of free resources out there about how to get healthy. There are millions of free fitness articles (you’re reading one of them!).
And yes, many people can get motivated and go build their own workout and go to the gym and figure things out and LOVE spending that time doing so.
For the rest of us though, we don’t have the time or ability to sort through the junk to find the best information, or we just want the peace of mind knowing we’re learning from somebody that gets us.
And lastly, maybe we know ourselves well enough that if we spend money on something, we’ll actually use it!
Personally, I pay money to go to a gym 2 blocks away instead of using the free gym in my apartment building, because I never go to the free one! I also pay hundreds every month to work with an online fitness coach, and it’s the best money I spend each month.
I’m not telling you to spend your money on fitness. Instead, I’m saying that what you spend your money (and your time) on says a lot about your priorities.
Kenney looked at his spending habits and despite what he was told himself he cared about, he was really prioritizing fast food, no sleep, and video games.
So he changed his priorities by eliminating unhealthy, expensive food and instead, spent that money on investing in himself (a coach, the NF Academy, healthy food).
Of COURSE you don’t need to spend money on your health and wellness – but it can be like powerleveling yourself in a video game! If you think you can’t afford a gym membership, or a trainer, or a course…track your spending and measure what you have been spending your money on instead (TV, Netflix, game subscriptions, etc).
If you reallllly want something, you can find a way to save elsewhere to invest on what’s important:
If you have chosen to prioritize your health and wellness, I’d suggest investing in:
A gym membership (or home gym) if you’re serious about changing your physique.
A comprehensive online course/community if you can’t learn in person. (like the Academy).
A personal trainer or an online coach (we have a 1-on-1 online coaching program too).
Notice I didn’t say anything about supplements or ab coasters or whatever – get your mentality in order, work with people who have succeeded in the way you want to succeed, and get started!

be Less like Old Kenney. Be more like new Kenney.
I’m so thankful Kenney let me share this story with you today! Here are the most important things he did to transform into Tony Stark:
Even though he wasn’t ready to transform, he kept reading about health and fitness for years until something clicked.
He finally had a big enough reason why to overcome his love of fast food. He dug deep and really addressed his motivations.
He stopped relying on himself, and instead outsourced his motivation and accountability to a community and a coach.
He invested in himself, which made him take the opportunity more clearly
He fixed his relationship with food – instead of comfort, it became fuel for his goals.
Regardless of how involved you want to be with Nerd Fitness, I’m just glad that you’re here and reading this. I hope you can see Kenney’s transformation above and decide “Hey, I want to do that! maybe I should do what he did.” And put his words into your practice!
And then go see Kenney perform!
Look for the guy center stage….

I started incorporating cardio 3 or 4 times a week into fitness routines.
The posts were uplifting and informative!
“Okay if Motivation ALWAYS leaves me, rather than beating myself up how can I..
