In Fodlan, are the crest and nobility power structures one and the same? It doesn’t really seem like one could exist without the other but you have characters like Hapi who just aren’t nobility despite having a crest. So it seems that crests make you a noble sometimes but it’s still bad news if you’re from a noble family and are crestless.
Fodlan lore is quite perplexing,
Well here is what I remember, but from my memories those are actually separated structure ?
The 10 Elites all had descendant from which come the nobility however because Fodlan is Fodlan we learn that not all nobles have a crest because Crest can skip a generation.
For example, in the Gautier house, Matthias posseses a Crest however Miklan doesn't, it's Sylvain who has the Crest. Same thing, Ingrid have a Crest but her brothers doesn't.
Normally being crestless often result in the child in question to not become the heir, that was the case for Miklan. However, we do learn of nobles that don't have a Crest without knowing more about their mansion, for example Hanneman's brother in law who married Hanneman's crestless's sister and still hoped that they could have a Crest baby since Crest can skip generations.
Likewise, House Bartel's leader, Baron Bartel did not have a Crest and had to marry Mercie's mother to be able to have Crest babies to pass on the Crest of Lamine
We also learn of nobles so desperate to have a child with a Crest because they don't have one to pass down to their heir that they had marriage with lower nobles or adopted Crested commoners.
So logically this would mean that nobility is independent from Crest. I say logically because the Lady in Red would disagree with me but again, there is 3 story instances that contradict her : Hubert, Miklan and Caspar.
Hubert is still a noble despite not having a Crest. Now granted, he killed his father and then inherited the title because of what his father did to Eddie but point still stand. In Miklan's case, the problem is that we are told that as the first heir, normally he should have inherited the title but he didn't because Sylvain have a Crest which means that should Sylvain not have a Crest, Miklan would have in normal times inherited according to the rule of first born. Likewise, in her support with Caspar Eddie gives him a speech about why people should be judge for their capacity... thing is Caspar is the second son of his household so the reason why he didn't became heir isn't because of Crest but because he is the second son since in a normal noble system he would not inherit anyway and Miklan's plotline implies that the noble system is in reality separated from the Crest system so this means that Caspar's only way to inherit would have been to have a Crest since as the second son he wouldn't.
Now this gets even more convoluted because even if none of them have Crest they can still give birth to a Crested heir... meaning that this system makes hardly any sense since even if a child is Crestless they can still give birth to someone who has a crest. In fact, my memory serves me right but each time we bring the parents of the student, only 1 parents is said to have a Crest, the other parent who is also usually a noble is not said to have one, in fact I think the only case of 2 crested parent's is... Byleth.... yeah.
Now that is from what I recall, I do think that 3H was trying to establish that the nobility is based on the Crest system but that was rather sloppylily done

ngl it really is almost impressive how easy it is to “not” be a villain in the eyes of edelstans.
“Edelgard says that she will sacrifice her own citizens for a “higher cause,” and then goes on to allow her own citizens to be harmed and killed for her own benefit, as well as innocent people in general (note: this is message is the result of failing to save Flayn... which Edelgard gave her strongest man to help do)”
edelstans: “okay but like, she knows that, and, like, acknowledges that - that makes it okay!”
“Edelgard explicitly says that she wants to get rid of the Children of the Goddess as a whole, who she finds to be creatures masquerading as humans, and she will celebrate their apparent elimination as the front liner of her S support.”
edelstans: “okay but like, Rhea is a meanie, so that makes it okay!”
“Edelgard will blatantly say that she wants to eliminate the Kingdom and Alliance along with the Church, and that she wants complete Imperial control over Fodlan.”
edelstans: “okay but like, Dimitri and Claude fight back against her though, and they don’t just stay exclusively on the defensive, so they’re just as bad! there’s no real good guy here, so that makes Edelgard okay!”
so all you have to do is
be aware that you’re committing atrocities against the innocent and undeserving
have a scapegoat to pass along all blame onto
have your victims strike back against your attempts at killing them
and viola! it’s just that easy! with this three step guide you may commit genocide and imperialism to your heart’s content, all while never being anything more than A Misunderstood Bad Boy Lonely Girl <3

Probably an idea someone else has already had, but I feel there's definitely potential for a story like this:
I've heard in Fe3h you can spare Flayn and Seteth on Crimson Flower. I think there's potential for a story here. I'm not good at writing dialogue or most other elements of a story, but let me give you the idea.
Let's say Byleth spares Seteth and Flayn and they go into hiding. That means they're not dead. And if Edelgard and Byleth still kill Rhea, I can maybe see potential for some sort of sequel.
I don't watch Star Wars, but let's use a metaphor from there. Years in the future, let's say there's a figure who leads a rebellion against the empire (a Skywalker type). They could then enlist the aid of Flayn and (if he's still alive) Seteth. They could be the Obi-Wan/Yoda figures of the story. I feel like there's something here. I don't know if I can do anything with it, but there's definitely something here.

I did not spend a ludicrous amount of time watching 3H character portraits be superimposed onto Vines and TikToks for people on Twitter to try and gaslight me into thinking the game is some sort of deep, serious political thinkpiece.

Really I think the biggest problem TDP has is that it wants to wallow in all your classic fantasy tropes. Good kings and evil advisors, dark magic and wise elves, dragons (can’t really blame them there). It wants to be a very simple good vs. evil narrative but realised people like Nuance(tm) in their stories nowadays and decided to shove it in, trying to make a more balanced story about the horrors of history… and then keeps overcorrecting when the scales are too obviously tipped in one way. As a result the whole thing is just an incoherent mess.
This really isn’t helped by having to make the protagonists flawless so we’ll root for them no matter what, leading to the antagonists being the only interesting characters. Even if their writing can be really messy they are at least allowed to make mistakes that have consequences.
Or the fact despite claiming to have Nuance(tm) it has progressively grown more into a show about how conflicts are always because of a few bad apples (and one rotten to the core in specific) rather than anything engaging.
To put it bluntly, the show wants to have its cake and eat it too. Has basically said as much at this point. But the cake is burned on the outside and batter in the middle, all the worse is that the recipe looked promising.

Perhaps this is out of line to say, but I've been thinking. It is quite frustrating that the primary factional conflict in Three Houses/Hopes has become a real and lasting divide within the community, particularly with regard to that of Edelgard VS Dimitri.
I am not saying that it is wrong for anyone to side with the lord and route of their choice, or that we should all simply be chummy best-of-friends, because that is entirely unrealistic an expectation. I am saying that there is no need to aggressively preach one faction over another as superior, especially when it comes to matters of opinion, personal interpretation and perspectives. Nor is there need to attack others to justify your perspective as the 'one correct indisputably factual view' that they should subscribe to.
If you like Edelgard, good for you. She's cute, and she's quite an orator. I will stay in my lane as a Faerghus fan and not interfere.
That said, if you so choose to actively target us for having less than stellar opinions of her or Crimson Flower, you are the aggressor. We do not take kindly to having our side of the community invaded, and most of us would rather simply co-exist with your side in peace left undisturbed.
If you choose to attack, and you raise your flag against us, you do not have grounds to be offended when we raise our own in defense to hold our established space in the community. We have not lost for simply safeguarding our own interests by closing off, and should you have to convince yourself it is your victory to celebrate, then I pray you find some hobbies to bring you joy beyond petty verbal skirmishes on the internet.

The more and more I dig into Three Houses the more I feel that Sothis was terribly underutilized, she never regains her memories and basically disappears from the story after she fuses with Byleth, not to mention that her backstory is so shrouded in mystery that I still barely understand it and that makes me so sad because she had sooo much potential as a character! Just imagine if during white clouds she regains certain memories depending on the route, makes he self known during the holy tomb scene, and having different interactions with Rhea depending on the route!
Sorry if that was a bit ranty.
No worries
and Yeah big agree, Sothis is victim of 3H's tendencies to shove the Nabateans and Agarthans aside even though it's literaly the reason why the game story happens in the first place

Also, a conquering force thats fully refusing to compromise versus people defending themselves and have showed to be open to peaceful communications and compromises is. lol. not a conflict of ideals. Ooooh if only they TALKED this all could have been - well yes except there is only one specific party here that is refusing to talk and I dont think everyone else should be blamed for her being a pig-head, actually.
Especially when Dimitri, once his mind settles, straight up says that it was her methods he had his primary issue with, not her ideals
Tumblr media
Note that he asks her what her ideals even are here, at the end of the war itself, meaning that they obviously weren't any motivating factor for him to fight her before because he didn't even know what they were. He just wants to know why she did this shit - that he didn't exactly take to her "I had to kill people, or they would have died!" mentality afterwards has shit all to do with everything before that moment.
And especially especially when Claude even straight up says in the beginning of VW that he agrees with her, but that it was literally specifically her bloody methods that made him stand against her
Tumblr media
Ideals are, at the beginning, what Claude and Edelgard literally have no conflict about. And he makes the revelation that Rhea was a positive influence after defeating Edelgard, so his change in opinion about her didn't have anything to do with his beef with Edelgard either. His problem with Edelgard, like Dimitri, was her proclivity to murder innocents. Which, uh, yeah, kind of a bit of a deal-breaker there.
And then you have Edelgard, who explicitly and directly states that she wants to destroy the Church, Kingdom, and Alliance to force Fodlan back under complete Imperial control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THERE AIN'T SHIT ABOUT IDEALS. BECAUSE EDELGARD DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT IDEALS. THAT IS NOT WHY SHE STARTS HER WAR AND SHE MAKES HERSELF SO, SO CLEAR ABOUT IT.
Like, to be clear, I can't stand the game either whenever it does to some degree try to sprinkle that shit in here to make Edelgard easier to take in, but holy shit do Dimitri and Claude make it hilariously obvious that Edelgard's ideals are not the damn issue here. The fandom clinging on to this idea just to make some limp-wristed "they were all bad in some way!!!!!" point is annoying

I think fire emblem three houses should get a sequel. At least for Crimson Flower. Let me give you my pitch:
Imagine Edelgard winning against Rhea. Her, Hubert and Byleth rejoice and celebrate as they're destroyed the "decadent church" and brought order back to society . (This is their POV, not necessarily the truth).
Now, fast forward some couple hundred years. The Empire that Edelgard successfully made is now beginning to crack. Her successors have not been nearly as charismatic as her, and the cracks are beginning to show. One day, a rebellion forms; a rebellion hoping to destroy the empire. The rebellions are all put down, but there's only so long that can keep happening. There's rumours that Seteth and Flayn are involved in these new rebellions, but no proof. (Byleth spared them years ago, and it's now coming back to bite them).
Our main character for this game/story would be a Skywalker type figure (I don't watch star wars really, but I know the characters well enough to say this). Someone the rebellions leaders choose to rally behind.
To quote a comment I saw on one of my previous posts about this (I asked permission, but I'm impatient and wrote this before their response): "So you know that line where Dimitri says the Blaiddyd bloodline will live on even if he dies? There’s your main character". Thank you, @bummedoutbutstillalive you took my idea and made it a lot better. Thank you!
So there's my pitch for why I think Crimson Flower is ripe with potential for a sequel! I don't know if I have the writing skills to do anything with my idea, but I needed to share it! Thank you for listening!

thinkin about percy and rhea, about "you took everything that i loved!" and "you did this to me and you'll pay!", about making choices to do good while also doing selfish and morally dubious things, about acting out of horrific trauma and grief but one represses it and the other wallows in it, about devotion to religion vs withdrawal from the gods, about surviving and finding hope through it all and choosing to do better with the second chance

Completely understandable to dislike or feel uncomfortable with Edelgard but I NEED people to accept that “fodlan reunification” is literally presented as your uncritical narrative reward regardless of route.
