So a new thing this season is that each team in our league has 11 skaters on the roster. The thinking is that it is rather common for teams to be missing at least one player and this way subs are only arranged when a team is missing at least two.

However, for our game this week, everyone was able to make it. This causes an issue as there are not two even lines of skaters. The result was a flurry of messages in the team text thread this afternoon about how best to handle the extra skater and line rotations. There were some rather lengthy looking discussions on the merits of particular plans. I told them I wasn't reading any of it and just went and played hockey.

The game, when it finally started, began with some pretty even skating and not many scoring chances either way for a while. Then the other team started to have a bit of an edge and it looked like it might turn into a long night. I was playing well though and making saves and it wasn't long until our guys started turning the momentum around and playing better.

Then I got impatient on one play and reached for the puck through some pretty heavy traffic and they managed to shoot it over me and in. But that actually seemed to do something and our team played better after going down. It wasn't long after that we tied it and then scored a couple more times on basic out hustling plays.

They did score a second on a two on one breakaway, poking in the rebound. So after two periods, it was 3-2, which I felt was actually a bit closer than the play.

The third period seemed to support my belief as we scored two more while they had some good chances late but I stopped them all for a final score of 5-2 and a comfortable win in a rather fun game.

I didn't notice exactly how they wound up dealing with the extra skater issue but it seemed like everyone was happy about whatever the final solution was and hopefully there won't be need for the lengthy text discussion if we ever have everyone able to make the game again.
