Good evening fandom! Welcome to my inaugural mini review post. Holy hell I can’t believe we’re finally here. These probably won’t be as detailed as normal like I mentioned. Mini review is the goal. It’ll be initial thoughts and feelings. Which will be fun cause all the other seasons other than S5 I had ton of time to reflect on moments. These thoughts for S6 could change when I rewatch the season for review purposes this summer. The exciting thing is having those first reactions. That's what these will be.
So you're getting hot off the presses thoughts haha I just watched it couple hours ago. These are thoughts I had while it was happening. With some editing to make it readable ha Want my reactions be as authentic as possible with these. Why I avoid spoilers tbh. Be interested in seeing what everyone else’s are as well. The gif library was an absolute turd so I didn't get to use all the gifs that were made yet. So I made some. Anyways this so friggin exciting to delve into so let’s get started.
6x01 Strike Back
Tumblr media
Tim got scruffier from the finale to now-and I’m here for it. Mm. Plus he's in Metro gear. Phew Lord. Something about scruffy Tim gets me going. Adore them riding together automatically after their battle. I truly love it. The little things I continually love with them. Also LOVING the Metro call sign. Yum If this going to be his call sign all season I am about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my lord why is her sitting at his desk so squee worthy to me? It’s getting me all in my feels. I love that Lucy can just use his office as her own. So cute using it to steal it for some study time. I love this so very much. Then her asking if they can ride together so he can quiz her? Tim doesn’t hesitate for a moment before saying yes.
Still amazes me we’re in the place with them. The Tim of old would’ve groaned and moaned about such a task. He jumps right on it for her. Ready to help her out. Even though he’s not sure how much it’s gonna do. Clearly very aware Primm is out to get her. That is common knowledge now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy is right when she says it sucks. That she has to battle this and face possible wild cards.. It isn’t fair when she's earned her spot more than most. Fought and clawed for everything she's done in this department. Definitely more than Nolan... Hey wouldn't be a review if I didn't pot shot Nolan would it? lol I love Tim finding a solution for them. Saying they can take out do the box calls all day. Widen her knowledge a bit on it. Sharpen her skills with odd calls.
I love her grateful smile when she says 'Thank you.' Loves this man. Damnit they’re so cute their banter coming out of his office is on point. Tim saying she learns best when she’s pissed off. I mean if that isn’t her rookie experience with him in a sentence. Lucy saying this feels like she is giving him permission to be an ass. Heh it kinda is no matter what Tim says.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know he kinda loves being able to make her his boot again in some form. He is going to enjoy himself with this. There is no doubt about it. That's why he's doing that smile of his. Lucy calling him out knowing this man so well. Pointing her finger and all. God I love these idiots so much. Tim trying to tell her just his smile. Uh huh sure it is Tim.... Lucy following after him with a smile of her own. These dopes I've missed them so damn much.
Tumblr media
I’m very much loving Tim has not really shaved in 6 weeks ha. The scruffy remains and I’m excited about it. Lucy is starting to question asking Tim to help her. We all know she learns best from that man sitting next to her though. I also always enjoy when she gets to drive. Another micro shift that has changed that I love so much. Her heart eyes when he says Angela’s cop brain is just booting up LOL Loves this goober of man.
Tumblr media
Lucy absolutely losing it and going on a rant of epic proportions had me rolling. LOL Massive emotional downward spiral happening here. I’m dying as I watch Tim take it in. God Eric the master of expressions crushing it again. This was a huge one for her holy crap. Nuclear really. Well done Melissa getting all that in with one breath basically. By the time she’s done I’m cackling at Tim’s expression. LMAO Oh my god these two. God I’ve missed them so much it pained me.
Tumblr media
Lucy knowing Tim's reply without even looking at him. Just epic married status at this point. Doesn’t even have to look at him or for Tim to say anything. It’s already there because of that crazy good connection they have. How deeply they know one another. It’s so good. Tim being the smart man he is says nothing. Lucy knowing he’s thinking it haha
Lucy coming to conclusion she will do crazy wild card during the day and the manual at night. She will sleep when it's over LOL Tim shaking his head. Knowing there is nothing he can say right now that'll make this better. Or to derail her crazy train of thought. This is like S1/S2 them with the added benefit of them being together now. It’s glorious.
Tumblr media
Getting serious Plain Clothes Day vibes from this episode as well. Except this time Lucy light years away from who she was then. Confidently reciting what she’s going to do Tim nodding along. Tim wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t rock her boat a little though. Lucy getting in her head about the crime scene now. Tim isn’t wrong she did tick all the obvious boxes. That the point of today is looking for wild cards. That’s what he wants her to engage that brilliant brain of her's in. It's why he's here.
To zero in on the 'Out of the box thinking'. Poor Lucy spirals out not being able to decide if she wants his help or not. I ADORE Tim telling her it’s ok to not know the answer. Not shaming her in the least just needing her to make a call. God how far we’ve come. Tim pushes her because he knows that is when she learns best. Trying to add a little urgency to her decision making. Unfortunately it backfires. I kinda loved them calling each other by their ranks in this heated exchange.
Lucy is so flustered it’s giving me PCD vibe once again in the best way. The sprinklers turn on and Lucy panics. There’s the wild card….We watch as a bullet leaves this man’s body and enters the storm drain never to be seen again. Lucy being so very disappointed in herself. It’s reminiscent of the disappointment she showed in s1 but only now she's far more experienced. So it hurts much more now….Oh Lucy my heart. You poor thing. Couldn’t have gone more wrong if she tried.
Tumblr media
I can’t believe they played clown music upon her entrance.... Beyond cruel but that's cops. Always taking shots when people mess up spectacularly. Tim trying not laugh.... Babe she is spiraling right now maybe don’t lol Poor thing I would be mortified too. I love how both Tim and Lucy smile when they see Wes and the wee one. My heart. She wants Wes's opinion and he just crushes her with logic. Ugh She needs a hug. Bad day for our girl.
Tumblr media
Lucy continues to break my heart as they sit in front of the crime scene. She is on the verge of tears. Verge of a breakdown it feels like as well. Killing me softly. Saying she should skip the detectives exam. My girl. Tim doesn't want her to give up. I will say this fight I feel like I would be Tim. Trying to be so supportive it’s come off as agreeing with her she can’t do it. When really he was just trying to be supportive of whatever she wants.
Can't win for losing right now Timothy. She is in a bad way right now. Lucy has some weight to her argument though. if I was her in this moment I would feel the same way. If I’m in a bad headspace I need reassurances. So I can relate to both of them in this fight. It’s not a fun time for either of them. Tim is still learning that emotional depth he needs to have with her in these moments.
Being supportive has worked before so he's not sure why it's backfiring right now. They’re solid but always room to grow beauty of them. Lucy spots someone pull up to crime scene crying. She has them peel out with Tim not really understanding why. Lucy catching her digging through her trash. She ends up getting a confession. Phew Well done Luce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oooh this final scene. Oh my damn lord. This is some PRIMO productive angst holy hell. Eric and Melissa came out swinging with it. I knew they were going to have one more scene about it. I just didn't think it would be this explosive. I adore Tim picking up on how short she is with him. Grabbing her by the arm and confronting her. Growth continuous growth for them both continues to show. Love it. Look at Tim being the one to come at this. I’m so proud of him.
Throwing her words from 5x21 somewhat back at her. Saying this isn’t going to work if she isn’t honest with him. Then Lucy really lays into him. Now do I think he purposely undermined her? No I don’t. Not ever. That’s not in his DNA to do that to someone he loves. I was deeply hurt for him when she suggested this. You can see how hurt he is when she says as such. He’s getting emotional and it makes me as well. I just wanna hug him.
Tim as we know is a DEEPLY loyal person. Also one of my main relations to him as a character. To purposely hurt someone they love isn’t fathomable to a loyal person. It's unthinkable. You have to hurt them first. To undermine Lucy would be to hurt her so he would never. To be accused of such by your favorite person? That cut's so insanely deep for him. I haven’t seen him this hurt since the 'Tim Test' line from her in 4x08. I’m legit wounded for him. He is so upset she could think that of him.
Tumblr media
Now Lucy might be onto something with the subconscious part. He could’ve done it not realizing what he was doing. Because love isn’t rational. Man is hardwired to protect her and want to keep her safe. So I could see this especially with her psych background. I think this is solid guess at what happened. Now was this the right time to lash out at him for Isabel stuff? I don’t know…
Felt like a low blow when he was already down for the count. She is throwing him daggers with her eyes most of this conversation. Feels like its more than just the UC right now but that's just my guess at this point. Let's not forget she was having UC doubts towards the end of last season.
Now do they need to have these fights and conversations? HELL YES. My god this subject needs to be discussed. Especially with how 5x20-5x21 were. Want to reiterate this is my first impression. I was literally writing this as I experienced their fight for first time. When I rewatch it this summer this could change. My POV could shift. But right now I see a man who only thought he had her back and was raked across the coals in this moment.
Tumblr media
So for me right now in this moment I feel like Lucy had pent up frustrations and took it out on Tim. The protective side of me for him isn’t pleased with that tbh. Doesn't mean I love Lucy any less. I adore her so much. You all know that. But my gut leaned towards Tim in this fight. That may be bias idk but it’s how I felt when it was said and done. Tim was very very defensive when she brought up Isabel. Which hasn't happened in awhile. But his emotions were heightened and he was on the defensive before they'd reach the topic of her.
Lucy basically kicked him while he was down and he felt it. I'm not discounting her feelings at all. She is allowed to feel overwhelmed. Has every right to be. She is STRESSED and it is coming out in all kinds of ways. Ways that aren't like her. I think she stewed on this thought the ENTIRE shift and it came out in the worst way. Which also isn't like her. What she did had him defaulting back to old school Tim. Cutting off the conversation before more emotions were to be had or he said something he would regret.
Basically cut the fight off at the knees and walked away. Lucy’s face says it all when he walks away. She wasn’t expecting that. Shocked he just left her like that. Oh Lucy, you wounded him more than once and he retreated HARD. Leaving her standing there wondering what the hell just happened? God this is so good though everyone. This is the type of angst I'm all for. What a way to start the season off hot damn. Hurts so good angst to get us going. I could not be more excited for where we go this season. Feel free to comment on this. Love to chat with you all about this. All uncharted territory for us all. We're in for quite the ride.
~~~
Side notes-non Chenford
Who are these friggin people? They’re insanely ruthless. Like Rosalind level ruthless in how they just dispose of people. Sending two their team out as a distraction to be blown up. Jesus. Then sniping their own guy. They’re smart but cold af. Then killing who I thought was the boss at the end. Shit. Consider me intrigued.
I liked the 6 weeks later. Makes sense need to do a time jump.
Celina being more afraid of Tim than Harper. LOL little does she know they’re basically the same person haha
Poor Aaron wants to be back in the game and can’t be. I agree with Grey he’s not ready even if he thinks he is.
God I love Nyla Harper. Took that mofo out like the complete bad ass she is. Came with repercussions which made me sad for her.
Angela being more excited to see burritos than her husband lmao I love this woman.
Feeling little potential flirty action for Aaron and his therapist.
I am not sure about you but I am scared for Chenford and their future 6x6 from both the next two episode descriptions and the interview that Melissa did when she said there was a scene that was very vulnerable and emotional. I am so worried they will break up. So much Ship Trauma. What do you think?
you and me both, bestie 😭😭😭 trying to piece together what s6 has in store for us has become my new roman empire lmao. i'm sooo curious! i have loved every episode in s6 so far and from the promoting and interviews they've done it sounds like we're in for an emotional ride for the latter half of the season.
i think what currently has me on the floor sobbing aside from tim and lucy at the hospital is the fact that by the end of tuesday's episode he's there, he's got our girl, she's safe with him but from the logline of the next episode, he's gone awol. i really do think that whatever it is that pulls him away and "leaves lucy in the dark" has to be a very strong reason like whoever is coming back is someone lucy doesn't know and is not the best time for her to meet.
i keep thinking of the look on his face when he walked into the hospital room, he was so distraught like you could feel his urgency to be by her side. plus, there's no way he would willingly disappear on lucy when she needs him the most. my guess is he disappears because he genuinely believes he's protecting her, whether he thinks telling her about it will be an added burden to what she's already dealing with or her safety could be compromised if he told her? tim loves to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders and i think this will be another example of that.
how they'll support each other while they're both going through individual hardships will be very interesting. i will say i'm super excited for both of their individual storylines, they both sound beautifully heartbreaking and i can't wait to see how it adds to their character development.
i personally struggle to see them breaking up at any point, the stakes are far too high to justify even a short 'break'. they've constantly reassured each other and others that no matter what life throws at them, they'll get through it. i could see something like 6x01 where one of them walks away and maybe they avoid each other for a few days because they're both equally stubborn and hurt?
i definitely want to validate that worry though like ship trauma is so real! hopefully this may help ease that a little ♡ — in this interview they discuss diving into tim's past this season and how lucy will help bring out the best in him to help him navigate it, so they'll definitely be there for one another ♡
all to say, i do think they still have more than one uphill battle to get through like they had just started to scratch the surface with the lucy being a uc conflict so they have that to continue to work through plus whatever is yet to come. i think it'll be angsty, probably a bit heartbreaking, but also really beautiful.
What kills me is that ever since Buck was asked to be a sperm donor, we see Buck in uncle capacity, in a friend of Denny's mom capacity, with kids on calls, but not with Christopher.
The last time we saw Christopher with Buck was at that domestic scene in 6x01. It was, to all intents and purposes, Christopher having dinner with his two dads. There was no other scene with Buck and Christopher since them.
Tumblr media
There was talk about him, but no actual time spent together. (For example, in 6x04 and 6x08)
Tumblr media
I think this is to make the distinction of Buck giving his own sperm to create a child, but that child is not his to raise.
He may be there as a fun uncle, or a friend of dad's, or just some stranger firefighter who was called to help in an emergency in the house that child will grow up in.
He/she may be Buck’s biologically, but they will not be his. Whereas Christopher may not be Buck's biologically, but he is his in a way.
Christopher has been his to help raise with Eddie. If we ever get to see them get together, he can be there as another father. Or he will legally become Buck’s if anything ever happens to Eddie.
Buck's already there as a second father figure. It's not by accident that we haven't gotten any more scenes between Buck and Christopher. They are showing us the distinction between what is and what can't ever be.
Eddie’s clear dissatisfaction with the situation isn't out of jealousy or anger. He is worried for Buck. He also knows the kind of father Buck can be, the kind that he already is.
In addition, the thought of having a baby Buckley out there that they can't see or protect - that extension of his best friend, (family, Tv-gods willing love of his life) it feels wrong to Eddie and we can see it all over his face.
There will also be Buck's mental health to consider, the breakdown is close, and Buck has a tendency to put himself in harm's way when things get too close to home. That may scare Eddie as well.
Eddie is also a father who once fathered a child and then left to go to war. When he came back his family wanted him to relinquish Christopher to them.
Eddie couldn't do it, didn't want to do it, not just because he thought Christopher would be better off with his father, but because Christopher is his and he loves him, even if they haven't spent too much time together yet. "You're not just any kid. You're my kid."
Tumblr media
Knowing Buck, Eddie knows that Buck will love that child for no other reason other than them being his. - He knows this is one decision that will come back to bite him in the ass, and I think that even though Eddie respects Buck's decision enough to not question him, he still voices his own thought, of not being sure if they should congratulate Buck - because he knows that one way or the other this is going to hurt.
Tumblr media
And Eddie is a lot of things. Being protective of his Buck is very much one of them.
I find Bobby’s talk with Buck in 6x01 and his talk with Eddie in 6x14 really fascinating because once again they sort of parallel and reinforce the paralleled arcs of Buck and Eddie this season, which I believe is heading in one direction. Which I discussed here.
In 6x01 Bobby tells Buck he needs more life experience to be ready to be interim captain and Buck immediately replies ‘is this because I don’t have a couch?’ Once again referencing his couch metaphor for relationships. Buck sees having a stable relationship as something that counts towards life experience, but as he tells Bobby he’s ‘afraid of making a mistake again’ because he’s had too many failed relationships and he doesn’t really know where to look for the right one (despite the fact it’s literally under his nose).
Bobby gives him advice about taking inventory on his life and that ‘one day you’ll be able to look at it with peace and ease’ which is what kick starts his ‘at ease’ and ‘secret to happiness’ questioning. This, however, was also abruptly ended when he died because as much Buck tries to gloss over it when people bring it up, his death is clearly affecting him and he needs to break down, accept what happened so that he can heal and move on. Then once this happens he can accept the support from others, and finally open his eyes to the person who has loved him and given him stability for so long and be at ease with him and with his life. Maybe even on a couch together. And just live. Then one day, he will be prepared to take on the position of Captain- just not yet and that’s okay because some things take time (like making a family and a love so powerful with your best friend).
Where as in 6x14, during Eddie’s performance review from Bobby, Eddie’s ego is badly hit by being rejected despite him not even wanting to go on the date. Bobby tells him his work performance is outstanding to revert his attention and that he performs well there, but suggests that he ‘find the right work life balance.’ Eddie says he thinks he has that already. He states that he and Christopher ‘are a good team’- which is interesting because the only time we’ve seen Chris in 6b Buck has also always been present in said scene. Bobby comes back and says he’s right he is ‘a good father’ but ‘there is more to life, and even Christopher would agree. The sooner you realise that, the sooner you can get back out there.’ Which kind of goes along with this idea that Pepa perpetuated that Eddie is ‘alone’ and that he needs to do something with his life with someone else. This juxtaposes us seeing the opposite the past few episodes with everything he and Buck have done together (poker, hanging out, hustling, implied family meals) and how last episode there was not an Eddie scene without Buck in. This to me suggests that Eddie’s eyes needed to be opened to the fact it’s not just him and Chris, and as he considers Bobby’s words and later agrees with Pepa about ‘not wanting to be alone’ he may slowly be realising the levity of Buck’s presence in his life. He never considered the issue with work-life balance or being alone because subconsciously he never was, Buck is there with him in every aspect of his life. Therefore now his eyes are open to it, he can start to understand what he truly feels towards his best friend. That this hole is already filled if he admits it.
I also think this talk with Bobby allows Eddie to do his own choosing, as opposed to the last one. And how even though Pepa pushed him at the start, Eddie himself can now choose what and who he wants. Whilst Buck can be chosen, he doesn’t need to pick out the right couch- the couch, family and heart already chose him. Because as is always said; Eddie needs to finally be able to choose and Buck needs to finally be chosen.
(I also think Bobby’s talk to Buck in 6x01 parallels his talks to Buck in 6x14, especially with how badly he wanted to please and impress Bobby- full of livelihood and going above and beyond. Compared to now where Bobby is taking it easy on him and it frustrates Buck but he also knows he’s not at his best. Showcasing how deeply affected Buck has been from the lightning strike and how he needs to reach out and open up to someone about it quickly so he can deal with his true feelings about it, because it’s breaking my heart to see him this way☹️).
Lucifer Ending: Tragedy and Contradiction
Okay, so I tried really hard to resist the urge to post anything about it, and I even held out for over a week trying to process/calm my feelings about the ending to Lucifer. I’ve tried, I really have, but the more I try, the more I CANNOT rationalize that ending. As you may have guessed, I absolutely hated the ending, and I just really, really, have to get my feelings out about it. If you liked the ending (I really wish I could be you!!), you may want to skip reading any further (I recommend you do, in fact).
Ultimately, regardless of the details, that ending for Chloe/Lucifer is just way too heartbreakingly tragic and sad, however, this is made all the more unbearable because none of it makes ANY damn sense.
I’m just going to start by pasting a bunch of quotes first:
2x05
Lucifer: I refuse to believe that. There is always another way.
Mum: If anyone can find it, it's you.
2x02 Chloe: “Doing what's best for your child, it doesn't always make them happy.”
3x16
Cain: But you're the Devil, you always keep your word.
Lucifer: I do. So I hope you understand how difficult a decision this was. And yet, oddly, the easiest I've ever made.
6x01
Lucifer: I love you, Chloe Decker. I'd do anything for you. Except give you up. Give us up.
6x09
Lucifer: I need you to know that if there is any choice to be had at all, I will always... choose us.
6x07
Rory: You make choices, Mom. If I told you what they are, you wouldn't really be making them any more.
Yeah. Not going to comment further on these right now.
Nor am I going to even get into the whole fate vs free will. Regardless of your views on that debate, why on earth a show about free will spends its final season spotlighting the widespread, controversial debate of fate vs free will by introducing a time loop plot, I’ll never understand.
But even if we forget the numerous issues/contradictions with that (and the ridiculous irony of Rory’s quote shown above), and accept that Lucifer and Chloe chose this, I honestly feel like screaming because WHY??? Why on earth would they EVER want to chose this?
I know the 2 reasons given, the reasons everyone is speaking up with, the reasons expanded on at length in fanfiction, and I’ve tried really, REALLY hard to rationalize them in my head, tried to enjoy the sweet moments fanfic writers are trying to make of it, but I cannot. Because it doesn’t make any damn sense whatsoever to me.
Reason # 1: Lucifer never would’ve realized his ‘calling’ to help tortured souls in Hell.
Right. First of all, if it really is his ‘calling’ he would figure it out eventually because that’s what a bloody calling is. I mean really. Not to mention there was plenty of evidence that he was figuring it out already, and him figuring it out after actually helping people in hell (Jimmy, Dan, Mr. Said out bitch), makes way more sense than stopping someone from making the mistake of killing someone else.
And second, even if we accept the argument that he wouldn’t find his calling, we are then saying that he chose his ‘calling’ over his own family, the people he loves most of all? That’s beyond awful to me. And pretty much destroys all of the growth and beauty and love and development across the series. A complete contradiction to even earlier in series 6. See above quotes. Lucifer tells Chloe he’d do anything for her, except give her up, give them up. He tells her if there’s ever any choice to be had he would chose them (his family). So, what the heck? Which leads me to reason 2, and beware with continuing because this is UNBEARABLY frustrating to me so I may get a bit heated. I just can’t. I can’t understand this.  Reason #2: They did it for their daughter, because she asked them to, because she didn’t want them to change her, because she’s happy with who she is, etc, etc..
This is the most widely accepted reason, the most referenced in fanfic, that it’s so beautiful because Lucifer and Chloe sacrificed everything for their daughter because they loved her so much.
I’m sorry, I really am, I tried so hard to make sense of this but it makes the least sense to me of all.
Why on EARTH is Rory growing up without her father better for her? Why on earth would Lucifer, of all people, knowing the pain it causes, ever chose that for his daughter?
This is not sacrificing for their daughter, this is sacrificing for NOTHING at all. This is doing the ABSOLUTE worst for their daughter, all because she asked them to?
And her asking them to in the first place makes no sense either. Why on earth would Rory ASK for it after all the pain it caused her? Earlier she told Lucifer and Chloe that him leaving ‘ruined her life’, and now all of a sudden she’s happy with it? After seeing and reading how much Lucifer and Chloe loved each other she wants to separate them? After saying she now loves Lucifer too she wants to do that to him? And you can’t tell me it’s her being selfless because she thinks he won’t find his ‘calling’ otherwise, because even if he doesn’t (which he would for reasons above), then again we are saying they are choosing a ‘calling’ over family, over those they love most. Or, even worse, Rory, is choosing FOR HIM and ROBBING him of his choice to chose his family over his ‘calling’.
No matter what way you spin it, it is just all kinds of wrong and messed up, and does not showcase the love the characters have for each other, nor the freedom of choice.
There’s nothing beautiful about any of this to me. It’s just plain awful and cruel for NO REASON.
Yes, I know I’m missing one popular theme with all of this, and I might just hate this one most of all: That even though Rory suffered it made her stronger, she’s proud of who she is, and they don’t want to change her, don’t want to ‘kill’ this version of Rory who grew up without her dad.
No. Just no. This pains me immensely. So we’re saying that she’s a better person having grown up without a Dad than she would’ve been growing up with a complete, loving family? That people who grow up with loving families can’t be as strong and proud of who they are? WTF?
Sure, we as people are only strong in life when we need to be but that doesn’t mean that someone who grew up more fortunate doesn’t still have the capacity for that strength (or that they don’t suffer in other ways).
Yeah, it’s beautiful when you grew up abandoned and were able to eventually overcome it, but in reality you’ll always be scarred to some degree, and you certainly would have been less messed up, happier if you hadn’t.
Changing the time loop so that Rory could grow up with her father in her life wouldn’t ‘kill’ her. Fundamentally she’d still be the same, still would have grown up with her ‘kickass’ mom. All the good parts would still be there. There would just be even more good and much less of the bad.
How on earth would Chloe and Lucifer not want to chose that?
There is no way anyone can ever convince me that you come out better growing up abandoned by your father than you would have if he hadn’t. Just no.
We are strong and proud to overcome something only when WE HAVE NO CHOICE. CHOOSING to suffer just to show how great you are afterward for overcoming it when you could have chosen NOT to suffer at all, is just the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
It reminds me of a quote from one of my childhood movies, the original “Lion King.’ Little Simba tells his dad he went looking for danger to show that he’s brave, and his dad answers, “I’m only brave when I have to be.”
So.  Circling back. Ignoring the debate on whether or not there was even a choice given (fate vs free will and ridiculous time loops). Ignoring that Lucifer likely (and should have) been able to find his ‘calling’ anyway.
Then, in summary, we are left with Lucifer (and Chloe) ‘choosing’ for Lucifer to leave them for Hell, abandoning them both (and Trixie) because either
1) Lucifer’s calling is more important than being with his family
2) Rory wants to suffer, to let her parents suffer an unimaginable amount of pain, just to show that she comes out better for it, even when she can choose not to suffer at all. And Chloe and Lucifer are both in agreement that this is best for them and their daughter.
What. The. Hell???!!
I’m sorry, but there’s no rationale for this. None. At. All.
I’ll be the first to admit that I would never be happy with such a devastatingly heartbreaking ending no matter what the reasons, but, HOLY HELL, can they at least have had it make even the smallest amount of SENSE?!
It’s just angst for the sake of angst, and I especially did not expect this from this show. It was always a show not to be taken too seriously, not to overthink and just have fun with, and that’s what made it work for me. But then they decide it’s a good idea to 1) throw in a time loop plot when time loops in fiction is pretty much the definition of serious complexity and making viewers overthink. And 2) have it end with such a tragic and sad ending that makes no sense. I am so sick and tired of the trend now days that shows can’t have happy endings.
(Edit: Now look what happened. I’ve gone and made another rant: https://thehiddenmemoryuniverse.tumblr.com/post/663357629901438976/lucifer-morningstars-broken-journey)
I just remembered a post I saw sometime ago about how john gets more hate from the fandom for things he supposedly did to dean (that have no real basis in canon) than for things he canonically did to sam and yeah, I agree 100%, but it also made me think about something else: the way the fandom views bobby
the majority of the fandom glorifies bobby as this Perfect Parental Figure, who's so much better than john and deserves the boys much more than john and would punch john for the way he treated the boys. even tho...
- in 4x20 and 4x21, he helps dean trick sam and force him into an awful torture-detox, acknowledges that they were killing him and yet does nothing to actively stop it and when sam was escaping, he even tries to take him back inside
- in 5x20, he tells sam that he's not strong enough to beat lucifer and that he can't control himself (where tf did that even come from. literally in that exact same episode, he stopped himself from killing his almost-fiancée's murderer, but sure, he can't control himself)
- in 5x21, he says to dean that sam is full of character defects and has a ~~darkness~~ in him or whatever (like WHERE is this darkness he’s supposed to have???)
- again in 5x21, he suddenly decides than sam can beat the devil and says that to dean. why on earth couldn't he say that to sam (preferably leaving out the character defects and darkness bullshit) who spent two seasons getting beaten down by everyone and their mom and probably needed a little appreciation and encouragement???
- in 6x06, he tells dean that he's his favourite
- in 7x02, sam tell him and dean that he's full-on hallucinating lucifer, that he can't tell what's real and what's not and that he thinks he's still in the cage and bobby basically goes "yikes! anyway I'm done with shit lol I'm going back to work" and then proceeds to ask dean how dean is dealing with sam's trauma like wtf
- in 8x19, sam rescues his ungrateful ass from hell and he thanks him by berating him for following his agreement with dean (an agreement he taught them) and not looking for him when he was in purgatory and settling down, even tho that's exactly what he wanted for dean in 6x01
- this isn't something he did to sam per se, but I think it says a lot about how he views him: in 5x21, he acts all ~~surprised~~ when he sees sam rushing in and out of the warehouse saving people, as if it's something new for sam and not something he does literally everyday. as if just one season ago, sam's primary motivation for drinking demon blood wasn't to SAVE PEOPLE by exorcising demons without harming the host AND by trying to stop the apocalypse
I'm sure there's more but these are the first things that come to mind (side note: I've seen people say that bobby's bias against sam is understandable because soulless!sam tried to kill him, but that doesn't really hold since only two of the things I've mentioned happened after 6x11)
in conclusion, bobby is fucking awful to sam and barely tolerates him and yet... since none of these actions are directed towards dean, then who care! he's the best dad the boys could've asked for!!!!!!!!! even tho I'm willing to bet that if he did to dean any of the shit he did to sam, he'd be hated by the entire fandom
my point is: john getting more hate for invented things he supposedly did to dean than for things he canonically did to sam and bobby being glorified despite being awful to sam and despite his blatant favouritism towards dean are two sides of the same coin
Sciles AU: the end of 6x01
ever get a plotbunny stuck in your head that you can’t get rid of?  this popped into my head last night and I have been thinking about it all day.  decided to finally write it out.  I have no idea how canonically accurate this is, but I’m not hung up on it: I watched a few of youtube videos of the actual scene and did what I could with that.  maybe I’ll write this out as a longer piece one day but not today.
“Do we even know him?”
Stiles stands alone at the end of the corridor.  Words ringing around his head, his heart pounding in his ears, he doesn’t even think he’s breathing anymore.
“Do you go to this school?”
His mind races.  His senior year photo, his lacrosse jersey, Lydia’s song…  All the clues were there, building up to only one conclusion.
“Why don’t you tell me your name?”
“It’s me,” he whispers. “I’m next.”
He feels cold.  Deep inside, tendrils of fear twist their way into his gut.  He fumbles for his phone, barely able to swipe through the screens to dial the number. The phone rings a few times, and Stiles thinks he’s going to be sick every second it’s not answered.
“Hello?”
“Scott?” he starts but his voice breaks on the word.  He clears his throat, clenching his free hand into a fist.  “Scott!”
“Stiles, is everything okay?”
Stiles thinks he might have a breakdown fuelled by his relief.  “You know who I am.  You remember me.”
“Of course I remember you,” Scott says like it’s obvious but he sounds a lot more concerned as he takes in Stiles’ voice.  “What’s going on?”
“Everyone’s forgetting me,” Stiles chokes out a barely-relieved laugh.  “Liam, Hayden, Lydia my… my Dad.  They don’t remember me anymore.  It’s me, Scott, I’m next.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The Wild Hunt,” he explains quickly, shakily, fearfully; willing Scott to understand.  “They’re coming for me.  They’re going to erase me, Scott, everyone’s going to forget me.”
“Stiles, get out of there,” Scott orders.  “I’m coming to you, but you need to get out of there!”
“No arguments here,” Stiles glances over his shoulder at the school corridor behind him then moves for the exit. He can hear the sound of horses galloping faintly in the distance and the sound crawls down his spine.
“Just hold on, okay?” Scott assures in his ear.  “I’m coming.”
Stiles bolts across the parking lot, only for a dark rider on a black horse to step into view.  He skids to a stop, nearly hitting the ground, and scrambles away in the opposite direction.
Another ghost rider appears from the shadows.
“Oh, God, they’re here, Scott, they’re here,” he panics, his heart pounding too fast in his ears.
“Just get out,” Scott shouts over the phone.  “I’m almost there.”
There’s too many, all of them surrounding him.  He keeps backing away, looking for an escape, begging to hold on long enough for Scott to get there.
He can’t escape them on foot, he needs… he needs Roscoe!  Oh, his beloved Jeep.  He lunges towards her, scrambling into the driver’s seat, barely managing to close the door behind him.  The riders slowly advance on the car.
“I don’t want to be forgotten,” he whispers.
“You won’t be,” Scott’s still on the phone, his voice strong and insistent in Stiles’ ear.  Stiles closes his eyes at the sound and rests his forehead on the steering wheel.  “No one’s going to forget you, okay?  I won’t let them, I promise.”
“Scott,” Stiles breathes, “can you… can you say my name?”
“Stiles,” Scott responds instantly; it’s almost like validating that Stiles still exists, that he hasn’t been taken yet.  “Your name is Stiles.  You’re my best friend.  I’m not going to forget you.”
But he is. The truth of it settles in Stiles’ stomach, a heavy weight that tastes of lead.  “Do you remember the night you became a werewolf?”
“Yeah, of course,” Scott says.  He sounds a little breathless, probably from talking to Stiles while running to the school. “We went out into the woods to look for a dead body, because you’d overheard it on your Dad’s radio.  You yelled at me for having a baseball bat.  And we got caught by the search party.  I hid behind a tree until I could sneak away and then I fell over the body and lost my inhaler in the dark.  We went looking for it the next day and you told me I was a werewolf.”
“Yeah, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world,” Stiles admits.  “My best friend, creature of the night.”
“I’m here, Stiles, I’m at the school.  Where are you?”
Stiles raises his head, looking out into the night.  There are four Ghost Riders, circling the Jeep.  It’s almost like they’re waiting for him to finish his conversation.
“Stay where you are, Scott,” he says finally.  “It’s too late.”
“No, Stiles” Scott snaps, desperately, “don’t you dare give up!  Not after everything we’ve been through.  Not now!”
“Scott,” Stiles starts, before breaking off.  Say it, say it, say it.  “I think I’m in love with you.”
“What?” he sounds stunned, barely louder than a whisper in response.
“I just needed you to know that.”
“Stiles, no!” Scott shouts.
Stiles is pulled from the car in a flash of lightning.  The keys slip from his fingers, landing somewhere by the seat.  His phone tumbles through the air and cracks onto the ground, the screen shattering on impact.
Scott pulls his phone from his ear, staring desperately at the blank screen.
The door of the empty blue Jeep swings closed, locking into place with a final click.
*
The next day, Scott walks into school alone.
He glances up the corridor and then back over his shoulder as the door swings shut.  There’s something… he can’t quite figure it out. Something on the tip of his tongue.
“Hey,” Lydia interrupts him as he stares blankly at the passing students.  “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” he replies distractedly, “I just feel like I’ve forgotten something.”
“Forgotten what?” Malia comes up to his other side, tilting her head questioningly.
Scott thinks for another moment, trying to unravel this oddness in his head.  Was it something to do with school or work?  Had he promised someone something?  Is the date important somehow?
After a minute, he slowly shakes his head.
“Must’ve been nothing.”
okay so i'm gonna try out writing smth short after each episode this season!! not beta’d, not going to be posted on ao3. here's 6x01 - an au where sara doesn't get kidnapped... or the one where ava gets tucked into bed
tw: alcohol, drugs, vomiting
They all got separated on their way back to the Waverider - Astra slipping into some shady casino and John and Zari not so subtly sidling off into a hotel for what they claimed was the ‘after-after party.’
Sara didn't really care; she could pick them up in the morning once they'd had their fun - and she was glad to be alone with Ava. Sara knew, knew with a certainty that scared her a little bit, that she wanted to marry Ava. Tonight was the night she was going to ask, and she was running high on alcohol and loud music and seeing David-freakin-Bowie of all people, but now the night air was sobering her up and her heart was beating weirdly fast.
If Sara didn't know better, she'd say she was nervous.
Ava clung onto her arm like her life depended on it, eyes glued to the stars, rattling off dozens of facts about each one as they made their way to the deserted multi-story car park where they'd hidden the Waverider.
"And that one - that's Andromeda 9, and that one tastes of jelly beans -"
"How many edibles did Behrad give you?" Sara snorted, and Ava looked at her, mouth slightly agape and pupils blown.
"Behrad? He's my best friend!"
"He's not going to be your best friend in the morning." Sara said, rolling her eyes and pulling Ava along.
"No no no no, Sara, look - the stars. There's a million." Ava gasped, waving the hand that wasn't holding Sara's at the sky rather wildly.
Sara stopped, and let herself fall into Ava's side. "Yeah, they're beautiful." She said quietly, looking up from the rain-soaked alley and above the rooftops to the stars above. She turned to see Ava looking back at her with tear filled eyes.
"You're a beautiful star. I'love you - so much. So so much. So so so so much." Ava mumbled, tears now on her cheeks, and Sara moved her hands to wipe them off, mascara and glitter coming away too.
"Hey, I love you too." Sara said softly, smiling gently. The ring burnt heavy in her pocket, but the opportunity had gone - Ava wouldn't remember anything in the morning, and Sara wasn't sure she was brave enough to ask twice. "Come on baby, we need to get you home."
"Can I get like - six bags of cheese balls." Ava said as they got to the Waverider. "I want them. I want them so bad."
"I think they're called wotsits in England." Sara said absent-mindedly as she pulled the Waverider key from where she'd stashed it safely in her inside pocket. "Besides, you hate cheese balls. You say the colour is ‘unnatural.’"
"I have never said that." Ava said, very confidently, despite her wobbling stance. "I also want a horse. And to facetime Mona. And maybe to throw up."
"Yep, I think the last one's your best bet." Sara snorted as the ramp descended and she helped Ava through the gangway.
After throwing up most of what was in her stomach, and a shot of what Gideon only described as "something that would help," Ava was laying on the end of their bed, eyes screwed tight shut.
"Nope, no sleeping yet, you'll kill me if you're still in those pants tomorrow morning." Sara said, trying to lever Ava up, who was decidedly not moving.
"I think you need to - leave me here. Leave me to die." Ava groaned.
"I'll kiss you if you sit up right now." Sara sighed, and Ava sat bolt upright, nearly slamming their foreheads together. Sara laughed, then pressed a kiss to Ava's cheek, who started to pout.
"Tha's not a kiss. A proper kiss."
"Nope, you are way to drunk and high and your breath probably smells like a beer mat." Sara said, turning to pull Ava's pyjamas from under her pillow. When she turned back, Ava was pouting harder. "Don't give me that look. Can you take your coat off for me?"
Ava's pout stayed, but she wiggled her way out of her coat, very ungraciously, and Sara helped pull her shirt over her head and carefully unfastened her jewelry, dropping it onto the little tray Ava kept on her bedside table. After a minute of fumbling herself, Ava fell back and let Sara unbutton her pants, tugging off her boots first, her pants following shortly afterwards.
"Pyjama bottoms or -" Sara asked, holding them up, but Ava just answered with a groan. "Well, this is close enough." Sara shrugged. She grabbed a make-up wipe from her dresser and dropped herself on Ava's lap, which saw Ava perk up immediately, arms coming up to hold her there. Sara worked gently, trying to get most of the lipstick and mascara off that had somehow ended up smeared across Ava's face, a task made more difficult by the fact that Ava's head kept lolling as she tried to press herself closer to Sara.
Once she'd done the best she could, Sara stood up, not missing the miserable whine Ava made at the loss of contact, and pressed a kiss to her now clean forehead. "Get under the covers. I'll be ten minutes, okay?"
After a quick shower to wash the smell of punk from her hair, Sara slipped into her pyjamas, picking the ring up from the sink, examining it in the mirror before sliding it into her pocket. Soon, she promised herself. She'd ask soon.
Back in their room, Sara turned the light up just bright enough to see her way to the bed - it was still too bright for Ava, who groaned.
"Missed you." She slurred, her eyes half shut as Sara slid in next to her, secreting the ring back into the box in her bedside table.
"I was ten minutes." Sara said quietly, trying to hide her grin. Ava sighed, far too dramatically.
"No, it was like - eight hours. Eight years. I was all alone -"
"Hey, I'm never gonna leave you all alone, okay?" Sara said softly, running her hands through Ava's hair. "Goodnight, sweetheart. Wake me up if you need to puke."
"Love you." Ava muttered, face pressing further into the pillow. "Love you like all th' stars."
"Yeah, I love you like all the stars too." Sara said softly, and moved forward to press her forehead to Ava's.
Tomorrow. She would ask tomorrow.
woo what did y'all think??
Rewatching Shameless and i just watched 6x1 jail scene. Can I request a meta if its not too much trouble? I feel like reading a really good meta about that scene and you're one of the best we've got so.....
It’s never any trouble at all! That’s so sweet to say—thank you so much! <3 Kind of coming to terms with the idea that anyone cares about my opinion over here. You guys are too much!
This scene is actually extremely important to me because it and the response to it were what made me start writing Shameless fanfiction, specifically when I saw that my views regarding Ian’s behavior and how Mickey received it were so vastly different from what I initially read. (Insert shameless plug for “That Milkovich Reputation” here.) Now, I know you’ve told me not to do this before, but based on the controversial position in which this scene resides, I feel the need to present a couple of disclaimers for our audience at large.
I first fell in love with Shameless last March, a couple weeks before quarantine began. I didn’t know what it was prior to that and therefore was not present when Noel left the show, so I didn’t experience the disappointment of a beloved character leaving in a potentially permanent way and didn’t engage in the fandom or see how deeply upset people were by that until after I finished the series. I also don’t subscribe to the theory that there was something going on behind the scenes or any animosity between Noel and the creators, as I have not seen any relevant evidence from reliable sources to support that what happened was anything other than decisions made in pursuit of career goals on both sides. As such, my analysis of this scene has only ever taken the content and context of the story and characters into account. I have no interest in speculating on the motives of people I do not know in writing it or portraying it this way, and even if I did, this scene made perfect sense to me as it was written and performed.
I understand and appreciate that this is not a popular position to take and urge everyone to pass this post by if my position on that matter is offensive or upsetting to you. I do not mean to tell anyone what to think or believe, only to explain how I view this scene and the context in which I do so.
That said, let’s begin.
When Last Seen: Mickey
As in all things, context is important. Prior to the prison scene, the last time we saw Mickey was when Ian broke up with him and Sammi interrupted their heartfelt moment, which basically sums up her character in a nutshell. That was a rough couple of days for Mickey. He saw how devastated Ian was to hear his family talk about him as though he were just like Monica; was distressed in his own right to return for him and discover that he’d left the base with Monica; buried his frustration and sadness by sleeping around with other people, which seemed to exacerbate those emotions because those people weren’t Ian, nor had he and Ian broken up when he did it; and came running when Ian called him, only for Ian to end their relationship.
Mickey is a very sharp man—we know this. He can read people like books and manipulate or intimidate them accordingly. He knew Ian had feelings for him in s1 when he showed up on his doorstep seeking comfort rather than going to any number of other people he trusted. He was well aware that Ian loved him in s3, and that made what he felt he had no choice in doing that much more painful. He heard what Ian said and knew what he was doing in 5x12. Of that, I have never had any doubt. It wasn’t like Ian tried to hide that he didn’t want to break up but thought that that was what would be best. In fact, the way he initially framed it always made me think that one of his highest priorities was not dragging Mickey down with him, especially in the aftermath of being called “destructive” and similar to someone who “put them through hell.” That’s why Mickey’s response wasn’t to call him an asshole or get angry or beg. It was to reassure Ian that he was there for the long haul, that he loved him and wanted to take care of him no matter what that meant—and that they could make that work. All the sentiments Ian had tried to communicate before he got married, Mickey was reciprocating in his own way. Had they not needed to temporarily write Mickey out of the story and Sammi hadn’t shown up right that second, I believe that he wouldn’t have given up so easily. We do have confirmation of that being the case in the prison scene, but we’ll get to that shortly.
When Last Seen: Ian
Ian isn’t a selfish character. We know this, too. However, Ian needed to be selfish by the end of s5. What he had to come to terms with wasn’t something that anyone could fully help him with, much as Mickey desperately wanted to. To Ian, the enemy was within. It was inside him, in his brain, telling him what to do even if that destroyed himself and everything he loved. It’s terrifying. I’m not bipolar, nor do I suffer from any other diagnosed mental illnesses, but I admire and respect everyone who wakes up every morning and tackles these things. They’re heroes every single day. But by the end of s5, Ian doesn’t feel much like a hero. Instead, he feels like the villain, and he’s lost touch with who he even is anymore.
That’s not a healthy mindset to have in a relationship. Relationships require a level of give and take, and that used to be something that Ian and Mickey already struggled with. Ian gave more in s1-3 because he was able to, while Mickey had a limit on what he could openly give because of the environment in which he lived and the manner in which he was raised. In s4-5, those roles were reversed: Mickey was able to give so much more, but Ian was gradually falling apart. Neither of them are at fault for any of those situations. It is what it is, and they have a stronger relationship for it. Ian is a giver, though. He’s always been a giver. To be in a position where he doesn’t feel like he can give anything to Mickey because he doesn’t even know who he is was truly heartbreaking for him, and objectively, he needed to take a step back so that he could focus on himself. He knew it. Based on Mickey’s understanding of Ian’s reasons after watching him deny that he had a problem for so long, I think Mickey knew it too. This hurt both of them—Ian to say it and Mickey to hear it—but they’re not fools and they’re not naïve. In some ways, they know each other better than anyone.
Jimmy said that when you’re on a plane, they tell you to put on your mask before you help anyone else with theirs. Ian needed to put on his mask. His heart can’t keep beating if his lungs don’t work.
Starting Season 6: Mickey
Unsurprisingly, Mickey has settled into prison life just fine. We’ll focus on his interactions with Ian in a bit as that’s the meat of the scene, but there are major implications inherent in his discussion with Svetlana beforehand.
1.      Mickey has accepted that this will be his reality for the foreseeable future. What else is he supposed to do? Besides, he’s known for a long time that the likelihood of ending up in prison was pretty high for him, as he alluded to in s2. He was a street thug. He stole from local stores, sold drugs, ran guns, operated a rub ‘n’ tug, created scam companies, and was a generally violent presence in the neighborhood for years. He was in juvie twice during the show, perhaps more beforehand. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that it would have been more surprising if Mickey didn’t get locked up at some point than that he did.
2.      Ian has visited Mickey before. We won’t get too deeply into this yet, but he thanks Ian for “coming back.” The other times, he wasn’t even paid to do it. So, as far as Mickey can tell, nothing has changed. Ian is focusing on himself right now, but his love for Mickey hasn’t dulled at all. That’s an encouraging thought, and it certainly puts a smile on Mickey’s face.
3.      Ever the opportunist and entrepreneur, Mickey really is doing just fine in prison. He runs a business, if you will, that appears to be quite lucrative already. This isn’t surprising either. Sadly, it’s a bad move. He’s already going to be in prison for somewhere around a decade, give or take a couple of years depending on his behavior. But his behavior isn’t good. He’s hurting people for money, and if he gets caught and brought up on more charges, not only will he serve the full fifteen years, but he could get more time added onto that.
4.      Ian is aware of this arrangement. He has to be if he’s been going there with Svetlana, and they weren’t exactly hiding what they were talking about. Ian has been very consistent throughout the series: he’s not as concerned with the moral implications of Mickey’s behavior, just how it could potentially impact their ability to be together. He still cares about Mickey at the start of s6, and Mickey can see it on his face when he won’t say it out loud. (More on that shortly.) Once he’s in a better spot mentally, maybe they would have gotten back together had Mickey been on the outside. I’m of the opinion that they would have based on the context of the situation. It isn’t an option, however. This is Mickey’s reality, and he’s not doing everything he can to get out earlier. If anything, he’s tempting fate on not being released at all. (This, in hindsight, sounds rather similar to the issues they’re dealing with right now in s11.)
So, this is where Mickey stands at the start of the season: a prison hitman who is quite pleased that the man he loves has come to see him again, even if the latter is visibly not in a very healthy mental state.
Starting Season 6: Ian
Ian isn’t in most of 6x01. What we do see of him is typically sad or colored by his frustration, outside Carl’s welcome home party at the end of the episode. Even then, there’s an aura of discomfort that accompanies the family’s knowledge that things have changed. Carl came out of juvie a different person—they’re all different people after s5, and they’re not sure how to handle walking on eggshells around each other.
From the very start of the episode, we see that Ian is still struggling even though he’s had enough time to at least partially adjust to his medication, especially if he’s been on and off of it. It’s so sweet how Fiona gently wakes him up—it’s also a bit different. What happened to banging on the bunk bed and yelling for them to come down for breakfast? After behaving pretty normally with Debbie at the bathroom door, she’s almost handling him with kid gloves, and the punches keep coming when she reminds him that he (1) has to get up for work at a place he despises and (2) needs to remember to take his meds.
The kitchen scene is extremely telling of where Ian is at this point, and it partially shows why he’s somewhat standoffish by the time we reach the prison scene. Most of the family is gone or different. Fiona is repeatedly on him about meds and getting to work on time—Ian, Mister Responsible himself who was out of the house before anybody woke up to get to work on time as a kid. Lip is at college. Debbie is absorbed in her unconfirmed but likely pregnancy. Carl is in juvie, and Liam is playing with the switchblade he found under Carl’s pillow before they take him to pre-K. His entire support system is either gone or treating him like he’s broken. All he has is Fiona “going Fiona” on everyone. It’s clear that this is impacting him because he actually derails the conversation to say that they should go visit Carl the following weekend, which was the position Debbie used to be in when Fiona was in jail. Just like Lip shut her down, Debbie shuts Ian down, and he doesn’t say another word as he drinks his coffee—which he can’t finish because Fiona is once again on him about work, so he trudges out the door to another day of being a busboy with no dreams instead of a soldier who has a future.
Work isn’t much better. Svetlana wants him to go see Mickey when he’s determined to stay away. (We don’t have confirmation, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that he wants to distance himself if Mickey is doing something that will potentially get him into even more trouble, especially given some of his reactions at the prison.) Sean is sending Fiona to nag him about not moving fast enough when the diner isn’t even busy. When Otis is chased down by the cops and slammed against the front window, Sean rather condescendingly tells him to, “take your rag and wipe the blood and snot off the window.” Ian—West Point-aspiring, ambitious, courageous, caring, intelligent, hardworking Ian has been reduced to wiping up someone’s snot by a boss who’s living in his house with a sister that’s treating him like he’s shattered glass and a family that is growing further and further apart these days.
That is the day Ian has had before he even arrives at the prison. Odds are that that is how most of his days have gone for quite some time, minus the blood and snot. …Maybe.
The Prison Scene
Now we come to it: what you actually asked about! It’s taken this long to get here because we can’t possibly interpret this scene effectively without incorporating all of what came before it. Mickey’s position is regrettable, but he knows that Ian still loves him and is at least handling his situation with all the grace and competence that we can expect from him. Ian is a bit of a mess who’s had a bad day and is now faced with the man he loves, who he is telling himself he can’t be with, sitting behind glass—where he’ll be for a good long while.
I’m going to divide this analysis into two sections. For a scene that many prefer to forget, to me, it’s a masterpiece of storytelling.
Physicality
The body language in this scene is remarkable—phenomenally blocked, phenomenally directed, and phenomenally portrayed.
When Mickey first appears, he’s visibly chomping at the bit to get to the visitation area. He’s peering out there while he’s still behind a locked door, and he only diverts his gaze to the guard because he’s waiting for him to unlock it. He’s cool about the whole thing—he’s very cool—but he’s obviously also here for one reason and one reason only. That reason is where his eyes go the moment he sits down at his stall and spots Ian’s coat where the latter is pacing behind Svetlana. Throughout their entire conversation, we see his eyes darting to Ian as he attempts to get the business out of the way so that he can indulge purely in the pleasure. It doesn’t matter to him that Ian is visibly tired and reluctant to be there or that he plays with Yevgeny instead of actively joining their conversation. It’s Ian, and all Mickey has to look at in here is a bunch of fellow thugs he hasn’t loved since he was too young to know what that meant. Damn right, he’s going to shamelessly watch him.
In Ian’s pacing, where we can’t see his face, I find it interesting that he keeps himself angled away from the glass. We see more of his back even though he’s moving side to side rather than away. He doesn’t want to see this. He doesn’t want to be there. In s7, he told Mickey how hard it was to see him behind glass—that wasn’t an excuse. He wasn’t falsely trying to make it sound like he was suffering at their separation just as much as Mickey was. We can see that that’s the case right here in 6x01. Ian has never had a problem sitting still through difficult moments, not even when a potential court martial that would further ruin his life was on the table. But this? He can’t sit down. He can’t face that.
The first time he turns directly towards Mickey’s location is so that Svetlana can hand Yevgeny off to him, and Mickey is visibly loving the view. His expression gets a bit softer, and he ducks his head a little so that he can catch a glimpse of Ian’s face. He follows Ian with his eyes even though Svetlana tries to get his attention. What a blast from the past, right? Ian there with his son, taking care of him while he and Svetlana figure out their business? And just like before, he offers Svetlana all of the attention and input that he deems her worth—next to nothing. Ian’s over there. Ian’s keeping the kid entertained, playing with him and rocking a bit in their seat and leaning over his little shoulder to make sure he’s doing okay—but forget that, Mickey’s eyes are examining him from red hair to beat-up shoes. He only glances back to Svetlana because he has to in order to get the information for their next paycheck. Even then, he’s still back and forth, up and down.
And Ian? He can’t keep pacing. He can’t stay turned away, but he won’t look. He occupies himself more than Yevgeny because now he’s low enough that he won’t just see an orange jumpsuit—he’ll see Mickey, and he’s had a bad enough day with his family making him feel more alone than ever without adding that pain on top of it. (This is the third time Mickey’s been locked up for something directly or indirectly related to Ian. I’m sure it’s not unreasonable to suspect that he also feels somewhat guilty about that, especially when it happened right after he broke it off.)
When Mickey asks if Ian is going to sit back there the whole time and not interact with him, Svetlana turns around and presumably says something to get his attention. Their eyes meet, and Mickey gives him a look that clearly says, “What the fuck, man?” This isn’t the behavior of a man who is heartbroken at their relationship ending or questioning Ian’s love for him. This is the behavior of a man who wants the love of his life to get his shit together enough to come say hi to him—or at least look at him—because he can’t pretend that he doesn’t want to see Mickey as much as Mickey wants to see him. It’s impossible to hide that when Ian has let Mickey see so much of his heart over the years.
Ian’s response is so fascinating because he does meet Mickey’s eyes, and he holds that connection for a moment. Then, reading what Mickey is trying to tell him, he actually turns further away again so that Mickey gets his shoulder. This sets the stage for the rest of Ian’s development from now through s9. He’s doing what Ian does: he’s compartmentalizing. He’s taking the emotions he can’t deal with right now, wrapping them in tissue paper, and neatly stacking them in a box that he’ll put up in the attic where he can pretend they don’t exist. But they do. They really do.
If they didn’t, he wouldn’t have spent their entire conversation trying so hard to focus on literally anything but Mickey, because as we saw in the Hall of Shame flashbacks and as has been obvious since their first fight-turned-fuck, once they look, the battle is lost.
Dialogue
I’m going to be real with you guys: I adore this scene. I’ve watched it more times than I can count even though I haven’t rewatched much of the season in its entirety. There was so much said with so few words, and while I was sad at the end, I was also hopeful. This was an impossible position to be put in on both sides, and I truly believe that this was the best resolution they could get at the time. And yes, it hurt. It was painful. But why was it painful?
Because they’re so visibly, obviously, irrevocably in love.
Mickey’s tone when he tells Svetlana to leave because he wants to talk to Ian isn’t as harsh as it’s been for the rest of their visit. There’s such a disconnect between his words and tone: roughly telling her to scram while actually sounding a bit younger at the idea of speaking directly with Ian. Svetlana could tell. It’s so clear, and her smirk is super knowing. In that moment, we’re seeing the woman who stood in the doorway of what was supposed to be her bedroom and watched him make eyes at this unconscious boy she didn’t really even remember. Not in the tears and realizing she was in big, big trouble if he left her, but in the understanding that his heart isn’t in the body on the other side of the glass—it’s sitting behind her. There are a lot of things I don’t like about Svetlana as a person (as a character, she’s amazing), but since they reached their agreement in s4, she’s never had a derogatory thing to say about the love those two share, and I respect that. It’s actually a bit cute how she takes her time and is almost teasing in giving him what he wants. A bit.
As I have this scene running on repeat so that I don’t miss anything in writing this, I paused to type and ended up on such a meaningful glance at Ian’s face. Svetlana just took Yevgeny from him, and he hasn’t gotten up yet. He’s staring straight at Mickey, and he looks hesitant. Scared, almost. Then he looks up at Svetlana, nods a bit, and reluctantly moves into her spot.
Is it overkill to take this one exchange at a time? Probably. Am I going to do it anyway? Hell to the yes.
1.      “Thanks for coming back.”/”Yeah… Svetlana paid me.” – I know that people hate this line and think this is painful. I know that it objectively is painful. I still laugh every time. Not because Ian agreed to come if he was paid. (He’s got medication to afford and no insurance. I can’t begrudge him wanting to make a few extra bucks any way he can.) Not because of the words, but because of what accompanies them. Ian will not look at Mickey—he’s lost so many battles lately, and he can’t lose this one too. Not when he started this one himself. He’s hemming and hawing, not looking up from the countertop and then twisting around to see if Svetlana is still there or anyone else is listening. It’s so stupid, because literally no one cares, but it gives you this sensation that Ian sees himself as being under a microscope the whole time. That’s his life anymore, at home and at work and now here. And Mickey? He doesn’t look terribly broken up about Ian accepting payment in exchange for coming. He gets this expression that I interpreted as, “Seriously? You’re playing it like that?” Then it settles into disappointment that Ian won’t open up or look at him like he normally would—that the glass interferes with the magnetic pull between them. But don’t worry, children. Uncle Mickey has just the thing to fix that: himself.
2.      “You look good.”/*awkward silence* – I mean…what do you say to that? I actually felt so bad for Ian there because what must he have looked like these last visits if Mickey is telling him that he looks good now? What kind of mess was he then when he’s still sort of a mess today? And he can’t even return the sentiment because how can he? Mickey is in prison. He’s in a jumpsuit looking at being here so long that he’ll probably have a few grey hairs starting to grow in when he gets out. I don’t know how to respond when people tell me I look good on an average day, so I can only imagine how that must have felt in his position. And still, he won’t do more than glance in Mickey’s direction. Well, if that didn’t work…
3.      Mickey chuckles and says he got a new tattoo. Ian’s eyes immediately shoot upwards, and Mickey slouches a little so that he’s in their direct line of sight—to hold them there, because once they look, the battle is lost. And Ian does lose. For a while there, he can’t look away again. First, because Mickey is courting some pretty nasty illnesses with his improper use of needles. Seriously, Mickey, a beautiful gesture but holy crap. Second, Mickey has his name (or a very close approximation to it) tattooed forever right over his heart. Ian had asked if Mickey was going to marry him, and Mickey told him to fuck off, but everything he’s doing points in the opposite direction. He promised sickness and health; now he’s made a permanent mark on his body for everyone to see. Mickey, who wouldn’t be seen in public with him once upon a time, has plastered Ian’s name onto his body. Ian tries so hard not to let that impact him, but it’s over. He’s lost the battle already, and he falls further and further. He’s smiling when he tells Mickey it looks infected, he teases him about the misspelling (which I think says more about how much that tattoo must have hurt than any inability to spell on Mickey’s part—I’d have a typo too), and he laughs at Mickey’s irritation that he messed it up. And it’s this sweet little laugh, not cruel or hurtful or mean. The wonderful thing about humor is that it can be used to cope with difficult emotions. We’ve seen a lot of people on the show start laughing when they’re in a bad place. Ian has been trying so hard to accept his life as it is even during the shitty day he was having. He tried so hard not to let himself fall into the trap of letting his love for Mickey rule his actions in the scene so far. That’s a lot. That’s denying himself to the point where I’m sure it hurts. And so he laughs, because Mickey did this crazy, absurd thing for him and yeah, it came out wrong, but he did it. This was all Ian wanted once upon a time (minus the felony), and now he has it—but he can’t have it. So he laughs. He immediately moves to hide it, but he laughs. He smiles more and has to bend away to pretend that he’s not—and Mickey lights up like a goddamn Christmas tree. This is the moment that keeps me from seeing this scene or Ian’s actions as being cruel. They’re both hurting, and this is an awful position to be in. But Ian loves him so much, and Mickey was doing everything he could to make him show it. Not exactly how he saw that going, I’m sure, but he’ll take it.
4.      “Been thinking about you.” – Knowing that he lost that one, Ian looks away again. While the end of this scene will hurt for both of them, especially Mickey, think about the pain he must be feeling in that moment simply because he’s not. He’s not hurting. For the first time that day, he feels good. This can’t last. Mickey isn’t coming home with him when time is up. This wonderful emotion that filled him up enough for him to laugh and smile after such a bad day will be gone the second he hangs up that phone. Then he’s going to go home and have Fiona breathing down his neck with nobody else for support. And Mickey will be here—behind glass. He can’t handle that, and he pulls that box out again and starts tearing off the tissue paper. He has to get rid of this feeling. He has to be the one to put it away before it kicks him to the curb. He’s stubborn, and Mickey can see him shutting down but also knows that he’s knocked enough bricks out of Ian’s walls to say something softer, something emotional and closer to the heart. Something he is willing to say where the other inmates can hear, which I don’t think is lost on Ian since he immediately looks up again. He doesn’t look away either, not even when Mickey asks if Ian thinks about him. He glances to the side and opens his mouth a bit, but nothing comes out. Mickey knows the answer.
5.      “Gonna wait for me?”/”You’re here for fifteen years.” – There’s this thing Mickey does after he first says that. He chuckles, because he knows that that’s pretty unreasonable to ask and has already predicted Ian’s response. His comment about being out in eight is lighthearted, a serious matter spoken as a joke because…this isn’t juvie anymore. They’re not going to see each other in a few months. This is Mickey’s version of what Ian was just doing, only where Ian tried to withdraw and escape within himself, Mickey is making it more humorous. He’s always done that, make light of pretty serious things to avoid looking at just how messed up it is. But I didn’t get the feeling he was really asking for Ian to wait that long. Instead, I got the feeling that he was testing the waters, seeing if Ian would shut him down—which he didn’t. He offered the bullshit excuse that Mickey tried to kill a member of his family, and Mickey saw through that immediately. I think he knows that he can’t ask Ian to seriously wait and never be with anyone else for fifteen years, or even for eight. I think he knows what he’s saying is a touch absurd. He also knows that Ian’s excuse is extremely absurd, and he doesn’t buy it for a second. It gives him a little courage to do something…well, a bit absurd.
6.      “Will you? Wait? Fucking lie if you have to, man. Eight years is a long time.” – I think the important part of this isn’t that Ian says he’ll wait when he doesn’t mean it, which is the popular take. For one thing, I don’t think we can ascribe that level of calculated behavior to Ian in this instance. There are a few things about this part of the scene that mean a lot to me: (1) Ian doesn’t get up and go. He doesn’t even move in that direction. He sits there with the phone after the buzzer sounds and before Mickey tells him to lie. His mouth opens and closes like he’s not sure what to say. Because what can he say? If Mickey serves the maximum, Ian will be in his mid-thirties by the time they can be together. At that point, he was either nearing eighteen or just turned. I still can’t fathom what I’ll be doing in my mid-thirties, and I’m a whole lot older than that. Ian looks just a little terrified here, and that’s because he knows he loves Mickey but has no clue what he’s supposed to do with that in the impossible circumstances they’re operating under. (2) Ian can’t even see himself moving on yet. He’s still trying to figure himself out, not think about a relationship. He has a job he hates, and his family is a different brand of chaos these days. He feels alone, yes, but not in a way that has him openly desperate for a relationship. Based on what he says to Mandy about Caleb, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that he doesn’t think he’ll ever be in a serious relationship at this point or even in a position for more than casual sex anytime in the near future. How can he say that he’ll wait when he doesn’t know where he’ll be whenever Mickey does get out? Maybe he’ll feel better. Maybe he’ll be out of his mind, roaming all over the place like Monica. Maybe he won’t just be standing on that bridge. It’s a huge question, one that has a lot of ramifications no matter what his answer is, and Ian clearly has none. He’s blindsided by that, which Mickey sees. That’s when he gets serious about those eight years, about how absurd their situation really is. That’s perhaps the first and only time in this scene where we can see that, for as successful as he is at navigating prison, his freedom means something to him. His freedom means he wouldn’t have to coax a glance out of Ian—he could kiss his dumb ass and make him stop being stubborn about how much he loves Mickey. But he can’t. He won’t be able to for a long time. And I think that is what really breaks his heart in this scene, not…
7.      “Yeah. Yeah, Mick, I’ll wait.” – Did anyone else notice how Ian swallowed hard before he answered? How his voice gets hoarse when he first speaks? I paused again to type, and the video is sitting on his face staring at the counter before the second part of what he says. He looks like he might cry. He looks like his heart is breaking just as much as Mickey’s is, because he can do what he’s asking this time—reassure him with a lie. Not because he doesn’t intend to wait, but because he is buried so far under what life has piled on top of him that he can’t see the light these days, and he doesn’t see waiting or moving on. He just sees the daily struggle of being this shell of a person. Of being without Mickey even if they’re not technically together. (Admittedly, I think he knew they would be if Mickey weren’t in prison at that moment. Ian has no real self-control where he’s concerned. Lip told him as much, and he’s self-aware enough to realize it, hence his behavior in this whole scene.)
When Ian hangs up the phone, he doesn’t get up immediately. He looks at Mickey—really looks at him—and each of them watches the other’s heart shatter. I don’t see it the way a lot of people do, though. On Mickey’s side, I don’t see it as being because Ian lied. I think it’s so much bigger than that.
Ian looks at him when they can’t hear each other anymore, and if he didn’t seem ready to cry before, he looks it now. Why? Because there’s nothing he can do for Mickey besides that. Ian, ever the giver, can’t give him anything. At that point, he couldn’t even help himself. He can’t be what Mickey needs in that moment, just like he couldn’t be what Mickey needed while he was sick, and it kills him. It kills him to know that by the time Mickey does get out, he’ll be older than he can fathom being and has no idea if he’ll even be around that long. It kills him to feel like even if he is, he’ll still have nothing to offer because, in his own words, this is where he lands. And it kills him to have to walk away and leave what he loves most behind glass.
Mickey is watching this. He knows Ian, and as painful as it was to get exactly what he asked for, it’s even more painful for him to see what him being here does to Ian. Where Ian is a giver, Mickey is a fixer. He makes things better. When stuff is broken, he puts it back together. When there’s a problem, he resolves it. Ian was going to leave because he couldn’t be an unacknowledged number three in Mickey’s life anymore? He jumped to solve the problem by coming out. Ian was acting strangely and wouldn’t get out of bed for so long that Mickey realized something was wrong? He immediately went to hunt down Lip, who he knows is closer to Ian than anyone else in his family. Fiona tells him that Ian is sick and needs to be cared for? He jumps in to do it, even to the point where it did more harm than good. Sammi caused a problem that Mickey couldn’t solve? He fixed the problem of her being there at all. But here he sits, behind glass, watching Ian that whole time and knowing that he was trying to maintain some emotional distance—and, because it’s Mickey, knowing why. There’s nothing he can do about this. He can’t fix it. For the first time since s3, Mickey is absolutely helpless to fix a problem. He takes a breath as Ian walks away as though he’s about to say something, but what can he say? What can he do? Nothing. He can do nothing but hang up the phone and weather the storm.
In the end, the heartbreak in this scene isn’t about them hurting each other, from my perspective. It’s not about Ian being callous and cruel or purposely trying to hurt Mickey. They know each other too well for that. They’ve been through too much. To me, this is about two people who love each other more than anything not being able to be what the other needed when they needed them—and that’s a whole lot more painful.
I don't get why people will go against reviewers, now that some have already seen the premier.
First of all, what happens in 6x01 will mostly contain film material that is a year old. The backlash the show got during the hiatus won't change that.
On top of that; nobody but the writers and showrunners themself are responsible for how the final season will turn out, be it respectable, horrible or Idk maybe even the best one yet.
Reviewers just do their job and give feedback. And for most if them it isn't objective at all. It can't be. That's why everyone tells us, that it's up to our own viewer expierence and our own interpretations.
I get that the show has history of letting us down and that we put on our clown masks every year, just to be disappointed again, when the first episode drops. But that's not a reason to complain to and about people, who don't even have a say when it comes to the show. And I'm not only talking about reviewers but actors too.
They are doing their jobs.
If you want to rant about the decision making, do it like everyone else on an independent post or scream about it to yourself but - and I can't stress this enough - Don't. Harass. People.
The gayness of 6x01 is reallll like omg whattttt
I feel like, while Lena definitely expresses her love for Kara in that ep, Kara is so much more expressive. Not that Kara loves Lena more then Lena loves Kara, just that Kara has come to terms with the whole self sacrificial thing. And so she's kind of going more all out. And I don't think Lena has really come to terms with losing Kara AGAIN.
So don't imagine Lena coming home into an empty mansion. Or Lena looking at Kara's contact on her phone. And knowing that now she can't call her, not because of the fight, but because she's gone, gone. Don't imagine Lena in her office late at night, staring into the dark sky, wishing she could just get a glimpse of that red cape. And don't imagine her sinking down on the cold bathroom floor as the realisation hits her that finally, finally, she's gotten her best friend back, only to lose her again.
-tokyo anon
(this almost made me cry, i hope i didn't break your heart, i'm feeling very angsty today and needed to let it our, hope you don't mind)
Why would you do this to me Tokyo anon.. I thought you liked me yet you hurt me
😭💔😭💔😭💔 my babies in pain
The pure yearning in 601 was just ridiculous and I want to cry just thinking about what the few next eps will be like for them (esp sad lonely baby lena)
Every Night (1/1) - schitt’s creek ff
Reaction fic to 6x07. Basically it’s the last scene from Patrick’s POV. Rated Teen, 1500 words. (AO3)
Other Season 6 reaction fics: 6x01, 6x02, 6x04, 6x06
___________________________
Mom: Dad is asking if you watched the game earlier.
Patrick adjusted his back against the uncomfortable headboard of David’s twin bed as he looked at the text notification on his phone. His dad hated texting, but he wasn’t above asking his wife questions for Patrick, which she then relayed to him through text. His thumbs moved over the screen as he answered.
Yeah. Amazing rally!
After a few seconds during which he listened to Alexis’ slightly manic magazine page flipping, he added.
Watched it with David’s dad.
Mom: Oh, that’s nice! Is he a Jays fan?
Patrick: I don’t think he follows it closely. He wanted to give me a talking to, and watching the game with me was a means to that end.
Adjusting his back against the headboard again, Patrick looked down at his pillow options. Leaving the bed pillow on David’s side (as if this tiny bed could have ‘sides’), Patrick picked up the decorative pillow and braced it behind his neck.
Mom: Uh oh.
David shuffled out of the bathroom, drinking from the water bottle that Patrick had forced into his hands on the way home from the winery. David hadn’t spent nearly as long on his nighttime skincare routine as he usually did, which was as big a sign as any that he was still feeling the affects of his fruit wine odyssey, even if he had sobered up enough not to press any more enthusiastic, sloppy kisses against Patrick’s mouth like he was an untrained puppy.
“How was your class, Alexis?” David asked. He sounded almost genuinely curious, which Patrick found interesting given David’s terrible acting earlier during Mrs. Rose’s mission to extract him from having to watch baseball. Maybe he was more accustomed to playing these games with his sister.
“Um, it was a big success; thank you for asking!” Alexis said, sounding way too chipper. “Everyone had a great time, and the clients were like, super impressed.”
“Oh, that’s good,” David said as he climbed into bed. Patrick felt David’s bare toes drag against his shin as he tried to focus on responding to his mother’s text.
No, it wasn’t a bad thing. We sort of bonded, I guess.
“I wonder if that means they’ll give you priority boarding when you enter the Gateway,” David continued, calling Alexis’ bluff.
Looking at the three dots on his phone as his mother texted him back, Patrick didn’t watch Alexis’ reaction, but he heard the flapping of her magazine. “Oh my god — Stevie did this, didn’t she?”
Stevie had, in fact, given them the entire run down that evening over dinner while Patrick worked to get some food into his drunk fiancé.
Mom: I’m so glad! I could tell when we were there on your birthday how much the Roses love you. All of them, not just David.
“Now, do the step machines actually lift off the ground, or are they just there to help you practice for when you walk onto the spaceship?” David said as he settled in, his hip bumping against Patrick’s under the covers.
“Come on, David, she didn’t know,” Patrick said, feeling some sympathy for Alexis.
“Thank you,” Alexis said.
But not that much sympathy for Alexis. “But now that you do, does it make the journey to the Gateway just that much more meaningful?” he said with his best guileless voice, leaning over to look at his future sister-in-law.
“Okay, you know what? Honestly? This whole situation is starting to gross me out,” Alexis sniped, gesturing at the two of them in bed. “It’s like I’m sharing a room with my twin brothers who kiss.”
Patrick wasn’t sure if he just wanted to troll Alexis more or if hearing the word ‘kiss’ triggered him like some kind of tender sleeper agent, but before he even registered the decision to do so, he’d leaned over and pressed a kiss against David’s forehead, humming with affection as he did so. David’s head was lower on the bed and when he turned, the only part of Patrick that his lips could reach was Patrick’s arm. David pressed a kiss there, and the warmth of David’s lips through the thin material of his t-shirt made Patrick swoon just a little bit.
Mr. Rose came in then, and if he found the tableau of David and Patrick snuggled up in bed to be awkward, he didn’t show it. He just seemed happy to have everyone under the same roof, and that everyone seemed to include Patrick. Mr. Rose grinned, and Patrick could only grin back. Then Mrs. Rose came into the room too, still visibly suffering from her day-drinking binge, and soon she was snuggling up with Alexis, mumbling something about a sleepover. Alexis made a lot of annoyed protestations, even more so when her own father made fun of her for almost joining a cult. It was weird and yet completely domestic at the same time. Patrick felt a bit like he was getting a look at the inner sanctum, at the way the Roses behaved when it was only the four of them. Warm feelings for the family bloomed in his chest.
“So does this happen every night?” Patrick whispered to David.
David turned to him. “Um, no. No it doesn’t,” David responded, but the look on his face told Patrick that wasn’t entirely true. They smiled at each other, and David pressed his face up against Patrick’s arm, and in that moment Patrick loved David so much that he thought his heart was going to explode.
Mr. Rose managed to coax his wife back to bed, closing the door between their rooms. With another annoyed huff, Alexis turned off the lamp and plunged the room into darkness, although a significant amount of light still filtered through the curtains. The Rosebud Motel did not have the kind of blackout curtains that most hotels possessed. Patrick sent a final text to his mother.
Going to sleep now. I’ll call you Sunday.
Mom: Goodnight, sweetheart. And tell David goodnight too. 😉
Patrick squinted at the winking emoji, trying to process the fact that his mother was teasing him about his sleeping arrangements with his fiancé. At least she didn’t use eggplant emojis to do so, like Stevie. Putting his phone on the floor, Patrick scooted down the bed, trying to get comfortable on David’s decorative pillow. “Here, we can share,” David said, adjusting his own bed pillow until it was under both of their heads as the small pillow fell off the edge of the bed.
“Thanks,” Patrick whispered, putting an arm over David’s waist and kissing him gently, a simple press of their lips together.
“I’m sorry I abandoned you today,” David said, his voice equally quiet.
“It was fine. Your dad and I had a good time.” He kissed David again. He knew that if they were back in the bed they usually shared in Patrick’s apartment, he’d be deepening the kiss, pressing David into the mattress until they were both panting and desperate to get their clothes off. As it was, he’d have to settle for a few kisses and for holding David close.
David huffed. “You don’t have to say that.”
“It was.”
“Still,” David said, kissing him back with a matching gentleness. “I don’t want to take you for granted. I love you.”
Patrick moved his hand up to the back of David’s head, fingers combing through the short hair at the nape of his neck. He pulled him closer, mouth opening, because surely a little bit of tongue would be okay. David seemed to think it was okay too from the way he kissed him back.
“Can you two stop, please?” Alexis whispered harshly. “I can hear the smacking noises!”
“Sorry,” Patrick called to Alexis, and then said to David, “I love you, too.”
“Turn over; you can be the little spoon,” David said.
David loved being the little spoon, so much so that there was a mole on David’s shoulder blade where Patrick’s face usually was pressed that Patrick had come to think of as his, he was so well acquainted with it. “You sure?”
David pushed on his arm. “Turn over before I change my mind.”
Patrick did, carefully not to pitch either of them off the edge of the narrow bed. He settled down, his spine pressed against David’s chest, David’s knees against the back of his knees. David wrapped an arm around him, sliding his hand up under Patrick’s shirt to touch bare skin. He felt David kiss the back of his head.
Lying awake for a long time, Patrick imagined all the nights like this they would get to have in the future that stretched out ahead of them. Nights when they held each other to soothe each other’s worries. Nights when one or both of them had had a little too much to drink. Nights when they held each other as an apology after a fight. Nights when they drifted off in post-coital bliss. Nights when the cuddling was a balm to their sadness. Nights when there was too much joy for sleep to come easily.
“I can’t wait for you to be my husband, David,” Patrick whispered, unsure if David was still awake.
An answer came in the press of David’s hand against his chest, right over his heart. “Me neither.”
Olicity Tropetastic Awards: Season Six
We got a wedding. And domestic!Olicity. And a crossover that could’ve easily been called “Oliver and Felicity are Soulmates.” And 6x18. There may have been moments that were frustrating in season 6, but at least we can all agree that Oliver and Felicity were the silver lining. They remained a united, solid force to be reckoned with throughout the season.
We also have these fics (and this badass gif!) to appreciate forever:
Tumblr media
@it-was-a-red-heeler’s recs:
Coming Home Again - @allimariexf
Felicity shimmied quickly out of her pajama bottoms, her eyes glued to the mesmerizing sight of Oliver’s hands unbuckling his belt, unbuttoning his fly, pulling down his zipper. As with everything, his movements were precise and graceful, and wow had she missed seeing him like this. She swallowed and wet her lips, finally looking up to see him watching her with dark eyes. “We’re really going to do this.”
He nodded slowly, watching her. “You okay with that?”
She stepped closer to him and slipped her hands under the waistband of his boxers, feeling the hard, smooth muscles underneath. “Very, very okay.”
~~~~~~~~ This is an immediate follow-up to the end of 6x03. AKA season 6 Olicity reunion smut (and fluff)!! ~~~~~~~~~~
**Award: Most Realistic Reunion Sex with Resolution and Sweet Moments (Loved it!)**
Dangling soons - @smkkbert
Three years ago, Oliver dangled maybes on Felicity. Now, they seem to be dangling soons on each other.
**Award: All the Clearing the Air and Making Plans for the Future Goodness**
Take Two - @yet-i-remain-quiet
A slight rewrite to the Olicity scene at the end of 6x19. When Felicity comes home after seeing the explosion and is looking for Oliver. What if the couple had had a real conversation.
**Award: Best Oliver Letting Felicity Vent and Really Listening Award**
@msbeccieboo’s recs:
Back to you (in your arms, I’m home) - drmrs
Oliver is done waiting. He asks Felicity out on their first date post-Lian Yu.
**Award: Cutest S6/3x01 Parallel**
Dessert - minachandler
Set at the end of 6x04. What if Slade called later that night, and Oliver and Felicity's sexytimes weren't interrupted?
**Award: Best Dessert, Followed by Dessert**
The Price We Pay - @wrldtravler
Months have passed. The hope for Oliver's imminent release dwindles into nothing. Felicity makes a deal with the Devil to have the moment with her husband that she never got.
**Award: Most Bittersweet, Better-Late-Than-Never Honeymoon**
Zip. - Vixx2PointOh
Her dress has a zip.
A zip that goes all....the....way....down.
Set just before 6x01.
That purple dress is stunning, gorgeous and Oliver has seen it before....
**Award: Hottest Bunker Reunion Sex**
@tangled23works’ recs:
Above All Else - shesimperfect_butshetries
A different take on episode 6x14: When Rene is pointing his gun at Felicity he shoots, but Oliver jumps in front of her.
This story is an alternate ending for season 6, beginning part way through 6x14 in which Diaz is a more intimidating villain and Oliver doesn't make that stupid deal.
**Award: Best Season Six Rewrite/ I Wish This Was Canon**
@smoaking-greenarrow’s recs:
Before They Turn the Lights Out - MachaSWicket
Some late night conversations.
SPOILERS for 6x01.
**Award: The Emotional Punches We Needed From Season Six**
Finally - who_seeks_shall_find
Finally, William and Felicity let it all out. They had bottled up their feelings for a long time so there are some accusations and yelling. In addition, every secret is brought up and Oliver finds out that he isn't the only one who has hidden things.
**Award: Sweetest Queen Family Mending**
(if you must leave) leave as though fire burns under your feet - @emilyszuko
When Oliver gets home from saying goodbye to Thea and Roy, his entire body feels drained, bones dreary and tired in a way that differs from any of the other times he’s slugged through the apartment to get to his and Felicity’s bedroom. The exhaustion isn't like it normally feels after nights out fighting assassins. It’s also different from a day spent bent over his desk as he struggles to come up with ways to save his city.
**Award: The ‘Oliver Gets His Well Deserved Snuggles’ Award**
Fade to Black - @felicityollies
Late night visits, confessions, and a bean bag chair? (Post-Ep fic 6x03 spoilers)
**Award: Best Use of Bonus-Scene-Smut (and Felicity’s Bean Bag Chair)**
Miles to Go Before I Sleep - @jesileighs
6.11 Missing Scene
Oliver returns from wiring the ten million dollars to Cayden James defeated, out of control and broken. Luckily, Felicity knows how to put him back together again.
**Award: Best Felicity Doing Everything She Can to Make Oliver Feel Better**
@memcjo’s recs:
words can hurt - @alexiablackbriar13
Post-6x12, Felicity has to help Oliver deal with the emotional fallout caused by Rene's insensitive line about PTSD.
**Award: Best Use of Felicity Being There for Oliver**
All the Little Things - @it-was-a-red-heeler
Just some drabbles, one-offs, and missing scenes from Season 6.
**Award: Most Amazing Snippets of Olicity and Team Arrow**
The Importance of Trust - @hope-for-olicity
This is my spec fic on the upcoming Olicity fight in Arrow 6x18.
**Award: Best Use of Beautiful Angst**
Felicity’s Chip - @smoaking-greenarrow
anonymous asked: HI!!!! Can you maybe write I fic where instead of Curtis hacking and attacking dig’s chip. He hacks Felicity’s. And Oliver just LOOSES HIS SHIT on the new team
A/N: I had too many angry feelings to write this right after 6x14. Oliver would have ended up murdering all three of them. I still wouldn’t read if NTA being awful in a story would offend you, because they’re little shits in this fic :)
**Award: Best Use of Oliver Facing Off Against NotTA**
@blondeeoneexox’s recs:
Post its and Promises - @yet-i-remain-quiet
Felicity is feeling as if there is never time for her and Oliver to get married. Oliver comes up with a compromise.
Inspired by the Grey's Anatomy season where Derek and Meredith get married via post it note.
**Award: Most Precious Wedding That Wasn’t Technically Legal But Still Counts For Everything**
A Spark from the Fire in Your Heart - @smoaking-greenarrow
6x18 speculation fic. Oliver hallucinates, lashing out at Felicity and William in his frustration. Diaz and Black Siren make moves against Oliver, and John and Lyla come in to help.
**Award: Most Heartbreakingly Beautiful Supportive Felicity**
And I can’t bear losing you, not again - inlovewithimpossibility
Set directly after the flashbacks of Oliver finding Thea and Samantha during 6x01, Oliver sets out to find out if the others members of his team are okay and he's particularly worried about one of them
**Award: Funniest/Sappiest Felicity in the Most Dangerous of Situations**
Accepting Promises - @allimariexf
Oliver's promise to Felicity that he would always come back (episode 6x19, "The Dragon") didn't sit quite right with Felicity. When she wakes up after a vivid dream/memory, she decides to continue the conversation.
**Award: Most Beautiful Additional Scene That Absolutely Should Have Been Scripted**
Heartbreak - @felicityollies
Felicity is sent to prison instead of Oliver. While she’s there she discovers she’s pregnant.
**Award: Most Cry Worthy Pregnancy Reveal**
@allimariexf’s recs:
Everything Will Be Ok - @stephswims
After 6x13 something was missing. Obviously, William leaving to follow Oliver needs to be addressed between the Queens.
**Award: Best Queen Family Domesticity (that remembers William is a person and not a prop!)**
(Something) Just Like This - @by-mintsea
A collection of season 6 canon ficlics and silences we won't or didn’t get to see on screen. Prompts welcome.
**Award: Best Soft and Domestic Olicity Moments that Should Have Been**
