I got to go in a sailing boat! I even got to steer! The weather was really nice – sunny and with hardly any breeze which suited me well.
It was so so so much fun. I saw a bird catch a fish and loads of cool bits of history including the remains of a huge mediaeval fish trap.
The set up was really great. There was a hoist to get in and out of boats and loads of people to help with the transfer (I think there were four people who helped me get into the boat and positioned correctly). The boats had adapted seats and they had lots of different cushions to help with positioning and pressure relief. I wish the boat had a bit more supportive seating – my head was propped up by a pillow and I was sliding around a little bit – but overall it was fine. The boat I was in had adapted steering which was still very hard for me to use when there was any hint of breeze but I did it!
The instructor I was with says they have the same kind of boat but with electric joystick controls to steer and pull the mainsheet (the rope that controls the big sail), which would let me have total control of the boat even when there’s more than a little breeze. I’m really excited to give that one a go!
I’m completely exhausted and probably going to be feeling this one for a while, but I think it was worth it which is what matters.

hi, you mentioned in a post accessible sports like rock climbing, i am wondering if rock climbing can be wheelchair accessible? asking because i have wondered for a long time if everything in the sims 4 could be made wheelchair accessible if they added wheelchairs and i could never figure out rock climbing.
Hello!! Yes most sports can be made accessible for wheelchair users. Honestly I haven't found one yet that can't! I work for a nonprofit that organizes events for children who use mobility equipment and we do all sorts of sports: sled hockey, waterskiing, downhill snow skiing, sailing, indoor skydiving, ziplining, kayaking, horseback riding, swimming, baseball, basketball, golf, self defense/karate, archery, even ballet!
This is the first time we're doing the ropes course and rock climbing. From what we've seen of the rock climbing, the wheelchair user is in a sling and they are repelled up the wall. They are able to decide how much work they want to personally do, or how much they are capable. This allows any person - no matter their upper body strength - to have the opportunity!
The ropes course is built so that one side has planks that the wheelchair user goes on with all the same obstacles to move out of their way and maneuver around as a typical ropes course.
So yea all it takes is some creativity and people saying HECK YES LET'S DO IT! And the world could be a MUCH more accessible and inclusive space. The kids I work with every day prove that all they need is someone giving them the opportunity.

Since it's def hidden in my previous reblog with how long it is, I want to say that I think adaptive sports makes a fantastic in-person community disabled space.
There are adaptive sports that allow both physically disabled and abled bodied players, including abled bodied ND/MI folk. My sled hockey team is one such space and it's been one of the best most positive things in my life.
I think its especially good for physically disabled people since when you join an adaptive sport it is near impossible to have abled bodied players speaking over physically disabled players without consequence. You can't just yell at another player whose talking about being prayed over because they're not talking about you at that specific moment. You're in a team and if if you don't let people take turns with talking about their experiences, you're not gonna be considered a team player and could be kicked off the team.
Adaptive sports are awesome. I can't recommend them enough.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affects an individual’s ability to move, maintain balance, and maintain posture. It is the most common motor disorder in childhood, but that does not mean children cannot live healthy and independent lives.

"He knew those wild, black curls and the obsidian star on a velvet ribbon. What he didn't know and had never seen before was the face. It was a face of rage and fury, the face of a goddess of vengeance, destruction and death."

I went sailing again this afternoon/ evening and it was the most wind I’ve ever been out in and it was so much fun. There was water splashing over the bow and when we went close to the wind the boat would lean right over until the water was right by my face!
My seating is pretty much sorted now as well and I wish I could describe it accurately here because it’s the height of crip ingenuity. It’s a whole system of parts made mostly out of plywood and foam and held together by thin bits of rope and elastic that attaches to the seating that’s already part of the boat. There’s not a lot of spare room so a system which enables me to remain upright even when the boat heels right over and is padded enough not to cause major pressure issues is really impressive.
You can really tell it was built and designed by a disabled person with lots of experience in finding ways to make things work in a world that isn’t designed for us.

Grusha with a knee brace and a cane when needed because disability representation is important to me and many others and it would have kicked ass to see a cool(pun intended) ass character with a mobile aid and it not being a big deal, its just there for us to see and feel seen.
