After watching Julian Schnabel's take on Vincent Van Gogh in At Eternity's Gate (2018), I thought it made sense to go back and see Hollywood's portrait of the artist, Vincente Minnelli's Lust for Life. Schnabel is himself an artist, of course, so it's not surprising to find his film focused on the aesthetics of madness (along with propounding a theory that Van Gogh didn't commit suicide but was the victim of an accidental gunshot). Minnelli and screenwriter Norman Corwin are less successful in finding a coherent image of Van Gogh than Schnabel and his co-screenwriters Jean-Claude Carrière and Louise Kugelberg were, partly because the latter were working with one of the most insightful actors of our time, Willem Dafoe, while Minnelli's Van Gogh is played by Kirk Douglas, who brings to the role a physical resemblance to the artist but is never quite strong enough to craft an integrated characterization. Lust for Life seems to suggest that Van Gogh's problems stemmed from a lack of reciprocated love -- from his father, the church he tries to serve, the several women in his life, the art-buying public, the citizens of Arles, and his fellow artists -- most notably Paul Gauguin, played (perhaps overplayed) by Anthony Quinn in an Oscar-winning performance. The film is visually stunning, although the transformation of the landscapes that Van Gogh sees into what he painted is handled more subtly and intelligently in Schnabel's film. Minnelli seems content merely to juxtapose place with painting. The sensational events in Van Gogh's life, especially the amputation of an ear, are treated sensationally in Minnelli's film, which only suggests that Van Gogh did it out of frustration with Gauguin, as if pleading for that artist's attention. We also get a sentimental deathbed scene, a kind of reconciliation with Vincent's brother, Theo (James Donald). Lust for Life is a watchable but flawed and inconsistent film -- even the name of the artist gets a variety of pronunciations, from "Van Gokh" to "Van Gog" to "Van Goh."

Dr. Timothy Joseph Temple, age 78 of Cleveland, passed away Friday, March 11, 2022.

Born in Abilene, Texas on November 12, 1943, Tim was the son of the late Arthur Joseph Temple and Christine Ray Temple.  He was a graduate of Abilene High School and earned a B.A. in Religion from Bob Jones University; M.A. in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary, and later completed his Doctoral Studies. Tim served as pastor of Grace Church in Wichita Falls, Texas 1968–1978 and Pastor of Abilene Bible Church from 1978 to 2009.  In 2010 Tim continued his ministry of service and loving care for others at Ted Dickey Funeral Homes in the Dallas metroplex area until moving to northeast Georgia in 2018.  In addition to his pastoral experience, Tim has spoken in Christian camps, youth retreats, and Bible conferences throughout the United States and Central America. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Bible Memory Association, Gospel Workshop for Children, and CAM (Central American Missions) International. He has been involved in the ministry of Walk to Emmaus since 1995 and the Kairos prison ministry since 2005.  Tim was a 30 year member and Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by sisters Joy Temple Ross, Hope Temple Dakel and Susanna Temple Peters, as well as niece Christine Ross.

Survivors include his wife Janice Riddle Temple of Cleveland, son Joe Temple (Darby) of LaGrange, daughters Nancy Temple Carr (Spencer) of Cornelia and Adrienne Temple Dagley of Farmersville, Texas, brother Philip Temple (Judy) of Greenville, South Carolina, sisters Faith Temple Scarborough (Walter) of Allen, Texas and Joanna Temple Hutchcraft of Athens, brothers in law Lynn Dakel of Richardson, Texas and Greg Peters (Susan) of Lakemont, grandchildren Cody Dagley, Valerie Dagley, Anna Dagley, Temple Carr, Ray Carr, Shands Temple and Sloan Temple, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, March 14, 2022 at Hillside Memorial Chapel.  Interment will follow the service in Hillside Gardens Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Habersham Rotary Scholarship Fund, c/o Spencer Carr, P.O. Box 999, Clarkesville, GA 30523.

The Death Kiss (1932) is about a murder on set. It’s a film studio mystery in which a writer, trying to protect the lead actress, investigates everyone involved in the cast, crew, and company to solve the case. It’s a lot of fun, and offers a glimpse into Hollywood studio filmmaking.

This film was made pre-Hayes Code, which just means it’s a lot funnier and more free than most films made between the mid-1930s to mid-1950s. I hate the idea of a moral code for media and entertainment, and it makes me happy to know that this film was made to characterize people as they are, not how they should be.

For a murder mystery, this film is surprisingly funny. It’s also a great overview of how movies are made and what it’s like on a set. I liked the writer/amateur detective Franklyn Drew, played by gay actor David Manners. I’m not sure the actual mystery of this film makes a whole lot of sense, because there’s at least one big red herring that isn’t accounted for. One of my favorite parts of this film, which is almost entirely in black and white, is when the lights turn off on set and sections of the film are colorized. The flashlight shines yellow and the guns flare orange when fired. It’s a really clever effect that I found unreasonably exciting.

@perfectmemory gets a half plotted starter

       okay, so, truth was, she hadn’t told her parents that was coming home during her break, when in reality, she told them, or rather hinted that she could go home as she was too busy prepping for the exams that were coming up after her break but she was actually coming home, just for a week but she was coming home to surprise both of her parents. when she was dropped off home, she let herself inside with her keys where she placed her suitcase down and got changed into some other clothes, needing to not smell like a hospital. once dressed, she grabbed the keys to her car and headed to the hospital, she had rang earlier and found out that her mom was in surgery but would be finishing up soon. making her way through the hospital, adrienne smiled at those she passed and knew as she headed for the gallery of the OR. excusing herself to the front, adrienne smiled as she leaned against the window and turned on the intercom “mom, your residents doing the wrong stitch.”

                           The night of December 31st, 2019 was just like any other New Years Eve. Parties raged on, people drank and celebrated the ending of a year and the beginning of a new one. The ball dropped when the clock struck twelve, and everyone cheered. Toasted, kissed, and headed home to go to bed. Everything was normal. The start of a new decade had arrived, just like it had every decade previous.                            Except the next morning was January 1st, 1920, and they didn’t even realize what was wrong. They got up, got dressed, and went about their days in New York, New York, as if nothing had changed. The residents of West Egg, East Egg, and Manhattanites alike went about their lives with nothing more than a little tickle at the back of their mind, telling them that something just wasn’t right.                            Of course, when the weekend arrived, they were all vying for the neverending party found in West Egg, thrown by a mysterious man of unending wealth who no one really knew. And then the next week came, and they went back to whatever lives they were living.                             Having the time of their life in the place people in the future would know as the Roaring Twenties.                                                        It’s just a shame they don’t realize that they don’t belong.
